2nd Round Playoff Preview: The Prologue And Bob

Over the next couple days will be doing our usual series preview extravaganza.  Anyway, a couple notes before we get started:

-We'll be doing our fifth episode of Live From The Five Hole tomorrow, with guest to be determined.  Look for it late tomorrow night or Friday morning.

-The schedule has finally been released:  Game 1 Saturday, Game 2 Monday, and going every other day after that.  Nothing official is booked yet, but if I were you in the Chicago area I would block off the Friday night Game 4, as we'll probably be hosting something somewhere.

-Before this series gets started, I am going to see if I can't head off some unpleasantries that will probably come up.  There will be Canucks fans coming here to participate, and I know some of you will head off to Nucks Misconduct as well.  We like the guys at NM, and they always help when asked.  I know passions run high and sometimes that spills over, and it's hard to resist being baited by the straight-up trolls who will likely invade our space.  But we're better than that, so all I ask is that when you get vitriolic you are first and foremost clever and funny.  I'm not asking you to be polite and turn the other cheek, but we demand a certain level of humor and wit here, and you're all capable.  So leave the "You suck" and "Burrows sucks cock" sentiments for the idiots around (though the latter is very true).  That's all I ask.

-A word on the Caps: When they visited the UC, the boys at Japers Rink participated in the Q&A I run in every Committed Indian.  The first question I asked them was about whether or not the Caps had run into goalies having career games against them because of the amount of shots and possession they usually have, like the Hawks have seen a few times this season.  Their reply was no, they hadn't, because the Caps had so much scoring talent that they always broke through.  Well, now you have, kids.  Enjoy.

Right, let's get to it.  We usually go by position, so that means there's only one place to start:

Roberto Luongo

#1 / Goalie / Vancouver Canucks

6-3

GP MIN W L EGA GA GAA SA SV SV% SO
2009 - Roberto Luongo 68 3899 40 22 167 2.57 1915 1748 .913 4

You can break down this series in any number of ways or look at any number of factors, it really is going to come down to is Roberto Luongo finally going to become the playoff killer he's advertised and paid as?  Or is he going to be the whining, whimpering, stone-handed bitch we saw last spring?  Evidence from the first round is ambiguous at best.  The numbers overall, .893% and a GAA of 2.92 are not going to make you pause for one second.  Bob was straight up bad in Games 3 and 4, even getting pulled in Game 3.  He didn't have much to do in Game 5, as the Canucks put up 7 on the other end.  But he was magnificent in Game 6, keeping a badly outplayed Canucks team in it long enough for Jonathan Quick to die of exhaustion in the 3rd period Vancouver to see it out.

You know this series means so much to Luongo.  Last spring may have been the nadir of his career, and like the rest of the team he's been eying redemption since that game ended.  But there's no question the Hawks are in his head, and no one knows if he can get them out.  When Luongo gets rattled, his glove hand has all the speed and softness of Hellboy's, but he can't use it as a weapon.  Remember Versteeg and Jordan Fucking Hendry beating him to that side easily during the blowout in March.  The Hawks are moving Buff back to forward for the sole purpose of getting Bob off his game.  Buff or others will probably get a goalie interference call or two during the series, if for no other reason than the officials will get tired of listening to Roberto and the rest of the Canucks bitch about it.  But will Bob be more concerned with drawing calls and complaining than stopping pucks?  Anyone who claims to know for sure is lying through his teeth, and even those are false.

Last spring, Luongo had two very good games in Games 3 and 4.  But that was when the defense in front of him did their best job of shielding him, and they still lost one of those.  He was ok the rest of the series, and obviously awful in Game 6.  I don't think anyone would disagree that Luongo will have two really good games in this series.  But the Canucks have to win both of those.  He hasn't proven that he's going to be a stud for a whole series yet, and I don't see why he would start now.  Though I used to be worried that this series would mean more to Vancouver, I'm starting to think it may mean too much to them.  Luongo is certainly teetering on that cliff.  He still scares me, because I can't shake the feeling that one day he's going to get it right.  But his play since the Olympics has been "meh"-tastic, and I wonder if someone can just turn it on when they want.  Especially if they never have before.  Make no mistake, if Luongo is anything less than really good for the whole series, Kesler and Burrows can go sample some of BC's legal weed together starting in two weeks.  And then the buttsex, of course.

Bobby Lu

Even in his excellent game 6, he had a few stone-handed stabs with the glove. The Hawks need to pepper the shit outta that glove side and then jump on the rebounds for some ugly goals (a la Parise on the tying goal in the Gold Medal Game).

Van’s glaring weakness is their D (and, as a result, their PK has been awful… not that we’d know what to do with that). Some ‘Nucks fans have been asserting that the likes of Andrew Alberts will be just fine moving Buff, Brouwer, et al out of the crease because "he’s a big guy"… Oh, you mean the same Andrew Alberts that got thrown around like a rag doll and bent over the boards by less-than-willing-to-fight Brent Seabrook?

I’m gonna chalk up that one under “not worried”

This is going to be one fun series

I also lean towards the “means too much to them” theory. They appear to have put an enormous amount of pressure on themselves – you know, the kind of pressure that they completely wilted under in the same series last year. I mean, Luongo cried.

Who knows, I guess. The Hawks just got done getting the fear of God put into them by Nashville, so it’s not like they can count on anything now. But one also gets the feeling that, to the Hawks, this is when things REALLY get started.

The Canucks have spent the last year making sure the Hawks have their attention. And now it’s on.

by Brian C on Apr 28, 2010 10:10 PM CDT reply actions

I also lean towards the "means too much to them" theory.

I agree here too. Always a chance that they get too fired up, and start playing against individual Hawks and lose sight of the big picture. Realistically, it’s probably a pretty small chance, but we can hope right? Personally, I don’t care how much more open ice they see in this series, I want to see the Hawks show up with the same blue-collar, lunch pail game that they had to bring against Nashville. That’s the playoff bread and butter boys, no reason to get cute now.

I hope they were watching the Habs

Maybe I’m just wrong here, but it looked to me like they epitomized the concept of a “simple game plan.” They were really solid fundamentally, and saw very few attempts at flashiness.

by VerStig on Apr 28, 2010 10:35 PM CDT up reply actions

'means too much to them' theory

I’m choosing to down play the significance of this theory. Why? If the Hawks get out of this series we may be reading the same type of “we wanna get revenge” quotes from the Hawks in a Hawks Detroit WCF.

I know the hawks and detroit still need to win, but the shoe will be on the other foot if there is a WCF rematch.

Ditto for CNS

I suppose this comment should wait for the defense preview

but there is no one, absolutely no one, on Vancouver’s blue line that I fear even remotely as much as Suter and Weber. In fact, they don’t have even ONE defenseman remotely as good as either one of those guys. I honestly feel we’re going to average 35+ shots per game on good ‘ol Lu, and should we put up 4 or 5 on him early in the series, he will fold under the pressure. I think he’s an overrated goaltender, if for no other reason than his fragile mindset and ability to get flustered easily (by guys like Dustin fucking Byfuglien…I thought you had more respect for yourself, Lu).

Get to him early, and we win this run and gun series in 6.

by illinikc33 on Apr 28, 2010 10:15 PM CDT reply actions

i was thinking something similar

NM asked Dirk Hoag (sp?) at OtF if he had any observations/advice about playing the Hawks, and one question they asked him was what they thought Nashville did well. When I read that I thought “well if they want to emulate what Nashville did well, good luck with that w/o the Preds D….”

Generally, while I think a portion of the Preds offense was generated by brain-farting on the part of the Hawks in some capacity (and being scared by the forecheck), their D is what really opened up chances for them. And I don’t see the Nucks D just bringing the same energy and skill to the table.

Niemi had a big test last series...

…after a painful, ill-timed goal that let the team down (the kind of thing that could melt, um, a fragile goalie’s psyche) he was nails- way better than I hoped. Two shutouts and big saves when the team needed them.

Also, his best game of the year was in Vancouver- a rare Hawk steal.

I think both goalies will get lit up at times this series- how will they respond?

I'm very concerned

about Vancouver, but I was still slightly more concerned with Nashville. The team has always struggled more with the type of game the Predators play so I was worried that they wouldn’t be patient enough or able to get through the not-trap without Campbell and Johnsson. Vancouver is dangerous, but they play a more open game which lets the Hawks play their game more easily. So I think I’m less worried they’ll be motivated for this series than I was with Nashville.

I'll worry

by aeroplane on Apr 29, 2010 12:56 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm with you

The Nucks are very evenly matched with the Hawks in terms of talent. While Nashville is less talented, they’re a great team that’s build to slow down the pace of the opposition.

With the Nucks, I see a pretty wild, fast-paced series with tons of momentum swings. Normally that would work in our favor, but they have the talent to match ours.

by Ban on Apr 28, 2010 11:23 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm not saying I'm not concerned

Not at all. They’re semi-playing with a chip on their shoulder (always dangerous), they have some great players, and I’m not sure yet which Hawks team will show up on Sat (b/c we saw a few versions last series). But I’m most worried about us being our own worst enemy.

Well said

I think we are the better team, but it’s not a terribly wide margin, and being the playoffs, anything can happen.

My worry is that we underestimate their D, but after underestimating the Preds as a whole, I hope that doesn’t happen.

Their D

is bad. That being said, I didn’t want to insinuate that I think this is going to be easy. I think Vancouver is a team that is pretty on par with us, with the exception being team defense, which I think we win by a wide margin. As I mentioned above, I think this is going to be a very, very high scoring series.

I feel like besides the Wings, the Canucks most know how to skate with the Hawks

And for all the talk of Byfuglien parking his ass in front of Luongo, I haven’t seen evidence of that during the regular season series at all. He tried, maybe during the first game, but he only got penalized. Missing Mitchell in the lineup doesn’t seem to faze the Canucks as much either.

Of course, the playoffs are always a different beast, and part of my concern is how the Hawks can definitely be their worst enemy.

Which is why Saturday cannot come soon enough. Even though I won’t be able to watch.

I'm concerned because they played us tough all year and were one of the few teams able to neutralize our puck possession

However, there’s a pretty big dropoff after you get past their top 2 lines and their D corps is pretty suspect. Not to mention Lu’s habit of shitting the bed in big games. I feel comfortable that as the series goes on the Hawks depth will wear them down and this is done in 6.

That said, the Sedins have a habit of playing very well against us and it’s possible that Lu can get hot. Either way, I think this is over in 6. I predict a split of both sets of home games, and whoever takes down game 5 finishes it in the 6th.

the kings underestimated our 3rd line to their cost. Bernier is a big body who throws hits like Jay Cutler throws picks which is often and in big situations. Demitra lead the Olympics in scoring and had a good series against LA plus Mason Raymond is a young speedster with good hands who scored 25 goals this year, plus his wife is hot. The third line isn’t as bad as you might think. And the only people who think our D is bad are people who haven’t seen what Salo, Edler and Ehrhoff did in the first round. We are very think on the back end for depth but the top 3 are very good.

what worries me the most about the Nucks are those creepy, annoying Sedin twins. But as a team they play more into the Hawks strengths.

by puppetmasterp on Apr 28, 2010 10:56 PM CDT up reply actions

I agree, I think the nucks play a more favorable style for the hawks

and I’m concerned, but not to the degree that is listed in this little thread. actually, I wouldn’t say that I’m more or less concerned than I would be against any other opponent, it’s just that the stakes are so much higher in each round.

I still have confidence in the Hawks, and I know we can do it! My guess is the nucks will come out with tons of agression and play physically. Maybe earn a few hawks PP’s. We might see some peroids like Game 6, period 1, but I think the Hawks learned a lot about their effort level from playing the Preds, and they’ll be ready to go.

by blackhawkeyes on Apr 29, 2010 12:32 PM CDT up reply actions

Its funny about our D’.

Everyone says they are weaker, andt hat is true to a point, with depth and all. But they lead the friggen league in points from the back end during the regular season, I think I remember hearing on the TSN panel of experts…or something like that. The thing about the defensive numbers…they are a little skewed by the fact that in the last couple weeks, when they were pretty well locked into 3rd, they strayed from the strong defensive posture in an effort to go all out. The players wanted to help Hank go for the Art Ross, and AV let them.

Lui..well…we think you will get his best this time around. I don’t know about this wanting it too much though. That is a bit of an invention of the media telling you so.

They all talked about wanting a second chance at the team that took them out. That’s natural. But from following this team, I can tell you that the mood and feeling I get from the interviews and whatnot is “we have an unfinished job to do, they are a great team, etc.” The Hawks have home ice this tome….so, it should be interesting.

Looking forward to this one a lot. 3 more sleeps huh?

Ohhh, and BTW, weed isn’t legal per se in BC. But in Vancouver, the courts were getting so overwhelmed with simple possession cases that the judges told them to basically stop bringing people in for it. So it is de facto legal.

Also our #1 agricultural crop in BC. Imagine if they just regulated it? 6 billion plus every year…all going to gangs and the underground economy.

i think it's hilarious

don’t me wrong. it was perfectly timed, and a moment of comedic genius. but, such a weird joke to make. he’s at the absolute top of his career, having been brought in to replace Marty Brodeur and shore up a sagging Canadian team, and then backstopping them to the Gold on Canadian soil, and in the handshake line, he makes a joke about the playoffs to the one guy on Team USA who has consistently given Lu fits in elimination games? seems strangely obsessive. then again, he had almost had his ass handed to him on a silver platter by that very same Kane, so maybe it was just fresh on the mind.

Did Kane hit the scoresheet in that game? I can't remember...maybe he assisted Kes's goal.

I think meeshak, that it was not anything obsessive though.

Rather, more in response to Kane’s comments before the game about having a “book” on Luongo…and his talk earlier in the tourney of that being “one goalie I’d like to face”.

And gamesmanship is fun and funny, you know? They were both looking for that little edge on the biggest stage, and the rivalry had been brought into it by Kane’s talking about him already anyhow. He just added to it.

Cannot wait until Sat to see the rivalry get added to on the ice….rather than just in the past…you know?

FTR…I would never argue that goaltenders are not a little “off” though. They all have their little superstitions and whatnot.

Patrick Roy had long and involved conversations with his posts, and was and is hailed as the best playoff goalie of recent memory.

Fat Bastard is a close second. Luongo is from the same province…hell, the same neighborhood as FB. I am pretty sure they have heard and said almost everything before.

That he put his personal vendetta ahead of enjoying one of the greatest triumphs in this country – maybe ever.

Canada has just won a gold medal on home soil – in OT no less – and Luongo decides to become Sean Avery and start making predictions and putting himself before the team. I’m sure Keith would have loved to say something like that to Kessler, or Crosby to Rafalski. But they didn’t.

A real captain, a real leader, a real teammate wouldn’t have said that at that time. There is a time and place for certain things to be said and that wasn’t one of them.

Just because people in Vancouver aren’t upset don’t think the rest of the country isn’t.

I am curious how it is that you know exactly what each player said to the others in the hand shake line up? How do you know Keith didn’t say something like that to Kesler? And why is it a big deal if Luongo was ribbing Kane a little? It’s not like in that moment after winning gold that Luongo wasn’t going to remember what Kane had said about him in the press and so he had some fun with him. I think you need to relax about it.

I live in Ottawa, so this should come as no suprise that there are people complaining about this incident or whatever you want to call it. There are a ton of ‘Hawks fans here but there seems to be more complaing coming from the Habs fan base – that in a nutsell should be self-explanitory. Personally, I don’t care other than the fact that he could’ve chosen a better time and place to have said that.

If Crosby would have said something I’m sure we would’ve heard something from either Rafalski or Draper. And if Keith said something I’m sure Kessler would’ve been more than happy to share it with the world. Just sayin’.

ell…its been like two days straight of that quote, you know? Yeah, we know what was said now. We know what happened in Game 6. We know the rivalry and its origins.

It’s like Lui was saying today in the interviews. It was a spur of the moment thing.

Both teams seem to be saying all the right things and showing the right respect. Maybe its just all the media struggling to find new things to talk about. ( reading the threads here and there, it doesn’t seem to be a prob’ here at SBN )

I get the sense its a little because both teams are confident, but nervous at the same time.

Should be fun. I’m looking forward to the banter and whatnot with the SCH clan and the NM visa versa…

It’s funny. Reading you guys, the rivalry is built on hockey.

But they pale in intensity to the Hawk/Nuck games of the past two years.

Shoot high and/or get traffic in front of the net. He’s far from unbeatable just Washington kept shooting low and getting rebounds but had nobody willing to go to the front of the net. It was like picking cherries for him.

It will be a ton different against Pittsburgh who love to shoot high. It’s a bad match-up for him and Montreal. Not to mention Montreal has been swept in the 2nd round twice and are 3-12 in the 2nd round since winning the Cup in 1993.

Sure, it’s fine in the reg. season, but you need your captain to step up in the playoffs and lead by example (a la Toews winning crucial draws in Game 6). Ovi played selfishly tonight.

Also, Semin might be first on my list of players I’d least like on my team. What a fucking choke artist, he was absolutely invisible tonight.

Coaching

Coaching is the single most overrated position(?) in all of sports. I read a study once that showed a “great” coach, a la Belichick, has something like a 5% advantage over the long term than an average coach. Players play and players win. Sometimes a coach can mask bad players with a certain system, e.g., Minnesota Wild the past bunch of years, but, bottom line, players win games, not coaches.

by illinikc33 on Apr 28, 2010 10:40 PM CDT up reply actions

In-game coaching maybe

But doesn’t a coach often bring a “system” to a team? I’d imagine that would have more than just a 5% effect.

I have to imagine it varies significantly from sport to sport, though. Probably the least important in baseball, or at least the AL.

by VerStig on Apr 28, 2010 10:44 PM CDT up reply actions

I believe the NHL

would have the most effect. NBA coaches are worthless. MLB coaches are mostly worthless. NFL coaches are a little less worthless.

by illinikc33 on Apr 28, 2010 10:45 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah, just line changes alone

That’s a pretty fast-paced tactical element you don’t see in other sports (in football at least you have all that time between plays to draw something up, plus you have a whole book you’ve devised). I feel the coaches are as much a part of the team in an NHL game as the guys on the ice.

I disagree

I’d say Ovi was trying to do too much and basically do everything himself, which isn’t necessarily selfish; it’s just how some players react when they’re desperate (see also: Mike Green).

I’d say the Caps are the new Sharks: built for the regular season, not a great fit for the gritty, hard style of the postseason. For that reason, I’d blame their GM (though credit to him for bringing in Knuble to try & fix it).

by Germware on Apr 28, 2010 10:41 PM CDT up reply actions

You have a point

With under 5 minutes left, he did get that look like “fuck it, looks like I gotta do this on my own.”

Mike Green and John Carlson (I think it was him) were both TERRIBLY out of position on Montreal’s second goal. I really hope Green doesn’t win the Norris, but I fear he might since voting is done before the postseason.

The cross-checking penalty he took that let to the Habs first goal was a prime specimen of numbskullery.

I also think Keith is having somewhat of a career year in scoring

so I don’t think his chances are as good as this year going forward. It was his unexpected scoring early in the season that put him on the radar.

I tend to prefer him in more of a shutdown role with secondary emphasis on scoring anyways. Therefore, I hope he wins it this year.

I’d blame whoever loaded that team up offensively at the expense of defense, rather than Boudreau. I loved how everyone thought of the ’Hawks as an offensively-focused team this year, before our D really came out into its own.

Also, I don’t think Semin choked only today — he’s been absent most of the series. I think he’s had a ridiculous number of shots, which have served to do nothing but hog the puck and pad Halak’s stats.

the Caps had a really good record, especially when he was between the pipes, against East coast playoff teams. even the games they lost, they still made a game of it into the third or overtime, and a lot of that came down to keeping their opponent’s score low.

Rule or not, the NHL isn’t going to suspend a top line defensemen during the playoffs for something insignificant like squirting an asshat with at water bottle through the glass. Suspending a relative star for puerile behavior isn’t just silly, it’s bad marketing, and that is likely as significant as the rule itself

I stopped on by to Jaspers rink… you know just to see how the Caps fans were taking it…. I just found that odd because every Cap fan I have ever known will argue till they are blue in the face that Mike Green is an EXCELLENT DEFENDER! Pause for laughter But then on their own blog they will flat out not call him one of their best defensive players…. Honestly if Mike Green was their best skater then they deserved to lose game 7 on that aweful “Defensive” play or lack thereof “defensive” play… I know that was a little out of left field, but I really can’t stand this big debate on Mike Green… If your sooo impressed with his offensive numbers for gods sake make him a fucking forward…. but until he starts playing shutdown D to go along with his O numbers he is going to continue to keep getting “Snubbed” for the Norris Trophy!

I feel bad for the caps fans

but the caps themselves got what they deserved. The man-child ovie was standing around for what seemed like half the game last night. At one point semin tried to shoot through 2 mont players, the shot was blocked, and a third mont player skated in front of him, with a fourth on his left. Four fucking players drawn to him, and all I could think was that he was going to pass to one of the four open players and score. Instead, he tries to shoot again. Shockingly, the shot was blocked. All game long, the caps were playing one on five, while the canadians were playing as a team. Fuck, even Gretzky could pass the puck once in a while.

Luongo is not the key here

He will be streaky like he always is. He will most likely give Van a chance to win in some games and will almost certainly shit the proverbial bed in others.

I know the preview of the centers are coming on a different thread. The key to this series is Toews, Sharp, Bolland, Madden, and Fraser (if he plays). They are the players with the toughest assignment. If they play solid defensive hockey and limit the cycling chances of thing 1 and 2, this could be a quick one.

Finally, Andrew Ladd. Do your thing.

Yep

That “show” is the worst. I’m now dumber a result of watching about 10 minutes of it

yea, not a fan of the show either...

…but was watching it after the Cap/Habs ended yesterday. They were all firmly in agreement that it was going to be the Nucks and Wings winning in the west.

I wish they would just be honest

And say “now it’s time for a gratuitous Jenny cleavage shot” then they just show the sweater puppies for a few seconds and she does not talk

And a great attempt to portray the faves as the underdog.

The truth is, even with all the truths listed…that the Hawks have home ice.

They won the last series. They are the faves.

But it should be a close series…only two more sleeps!

""I felt last year our guys were ready to take that next step," Vigneault said. "We weren't able to get through Chicago. I feel we're even more ready now. Having gone through that experience, having learned from it. . . we're going to be better prepared to face the challenge ahead of us."

by vancitydan on Apr 29, 2010 3:33 PM CDT up reply actions

they're obviously not the faves

if everyone is picking the Nucks. since “favorite” is a label chosen and applied by the media, if they’re choosing the Nucks, then the Nucks are the favorites

if it hadn’t been for detroit, Chicago would have been the higher seed last year, too. the Nucks were the faves going into that series. all i’m saying is, the media chooses the Nucks over the Hawks, regardless of regular season performance.

Last year, most of ESPN picked Calgary over Chicago in round 1

but I went back to look around round 2, and all the previous predictions had turned to “Hawks” instead of “Flames”.

But when it was suggested to him that Toews v. Kane seems likely to become a sidebar to every future international hockey tournament, he smiled and said: "I'd like us to win something together, too."

According to Michelle Beadle's twitter page

The sportsnation crew is jumping on the Blackhawks bandwagon. They are a big 0-fer in picks.

But you guys are the fave, regardless of what Lebrun says…

To your signature – We’ll see how prepared Vancouver is.

The Canucks quotes are reminding me of the quotes launched by Capitals before their series with Montreal with “we’re better prepared this year” – Boudreau, “we know what it takes” – Semin, “who’s Plekanec? I thought you were talking about Jagr.” – Theodore. We all know how that series ended.

Talk is cheap.

2010 PLAYOFFS: ROUND ONE MVP
Patrick Kane: 4 goals and the master of the 13.6 second left escape.
Without that who knows how things would've turned out.

by hawks61 on Apr 29, 2010 6:55 PM CDT up reply actions

Sure is.

But we have two more days of it before puck drop.

No doubt the bigwigs at SBN are enjoying the traffic and all.

But what’s left to talk about?

Oh, and AV’s quote sounded pretty common sense and level headed to me. “We hope to learn from our mistakes…and do better” is all I got out of it.

The Caps ran their mouths pretty hard…but you would be hard pressed to find any bulletin board material coming from either team in our series.

Like Q said…all that hatred and anger is there already.

Between them only I hope.

""I felt last year our guys were ready to take that next step," Vigneault said. "We weren't able to get through Chicago. I feel we're even more ready now. Having gone through that experience, having learned from it. . . we're going to be better prepared to face the challenge ahead of us."

I think it's a good quote

It’s what I’d want to hear from a Hawks’ coach if the situation were reversed.
