You've Got So Far To Go - Hawks 4, Flames 1
Is everyone starting to ease themselves back from the ledge and/or putting away the gas can and matches? Granted, nothing seems to cure what ails the Hawks like a visit from the Calgary Flames, who have now been swept two straight regular seasons by the Men of Four Feathers. Additionally, prior to the game, Scum's loss to Philly officially ended their Reign of Terror over the Central Division, making the Chicago Blackhawks your 2010 Division Champions, even though the hats told us so earlier in the week.
While I listened to the vast majority of the first period on the radio driving out to my parents' house, the play seemed to be fairly even between the Hawks and Flames, who need absolutely every single point they can get in order to sneak into the playoffs. But once again, Calgary's early energy was quickly diffused by a suddenly hot Tomas Kopecky, who back handed a rebound of a Niklas Hjalmarsson shot that caromed off of the end boards. Calgary seemed to wilt after going down, and the Hawks never looked back. While the shot count was relatively close at 12-10 in favor of the Hawks after 20 minutes, after the TomoKop goal, they didn't seem to really generate more than one-and-done chances, which is a credit to the Hawks defensemen. Troy Brouwer put a rebound off of a Brent Seabrook shot with less than a minute to go in the period, giving #22 his 22nd of the year, and the Hawks a two-goal lead after the first period.
The second period saw continued territorial dominance by the Hawks, with several prolonged possessions in Calgary's end, particularly from the top line of Toews, Sharp, and Hossa. It was the second line, though, who provided the lone goal of the middle frame, when Patrick Kane ripped a wrist shot over Miikka Kiprusoff's blocker just inside the blue line facing two Calgary defenders. Calgary mustered a paltry five shots during minutes 21-40, but two of them were of a quality variety. Niklas Hagman was snuffed out on a partial breakaway by Niemi, smothering a weak shot that Hagman couldn't get to settle down, and Ian White ripped a perfect shot to the wide side past Niemi after he inside-outed Jordan Hendry at the Hawk line. The period would end at that score, the Hawks leading 3-1.
Once it finally occurred to them that their playoff hopes, as well as as many of their jobs were on the line between periods two and three, the Flames finally came out with something resembling the urgency they had to start the game. But, as is their lot, the Hawks had every answer, particularly Niemi in net, who made a couple of key saves, including a clutch shoulder save on a redirection from in the slot. Again, credit must be given to the defensemen, who are starting to round back into their form earlier in the year of limiting chances, and clearing rebounds from within the slot. Some neutral ice board work by Jonathan Toews led to a rush led by Marian Hossa, who found a trailing Dustin Byfuglien wide open to blaze another one past Kiprusoff to give you your final score - Flames 1, Central Division Champions 4.
Observations
- As we've been stating repeatedly, the top line is developing into one hellacious beast. Toews, Sharp, and Hossa had numerous stretches of prolonged pressure, and they once again sprung a line member for a breakaway (Sharp), which is getting to be a nightly occurance. What it lacks in brute physicality, it makes up for in hockey IQ and strength on the puck.
- Glad to see Kaner get off the schinde with 1 and 1 tonight, coming off a brief scoring slump since he was moved from Toews' line. He's become increasingly more noticeable in every game since being put with Bolland and Brouwer, which seems indicative of the line being more comfortable with one another.
- While Biscuit and Hammer keep improving as a pair as each game passes, I'm still puzzled as to why Buff is paried with Duncan Keith if he's going to go do his Mike Green-with-a-pituitary-issue impersonation out there, as making Dunc stay at home to cover for Buff's mistakes negates a lot of the positives he brings to the offensive zone. But with the defense being how it is these days, it will likely take a major league fisting at the hands of an opposition's top line before it's broken up.
- It wasn't the suffocating defense we saw in the first half of the year, but it was good enough tonight. There were a few too many shots to get through for my tastes, but the defensemen did an excellent job of clearing rebounds and springing forwards in transition.
- Finally, Antti Niemi continues to stake his claim on the #1/playoff goalie position, now only allowing 2 goals in his last 185 minutes of ice time. His confidence is growing, and more importantly, it seems that his teammates confindence IN him is growing as well.
- As was mentioned earlier, even prior to the win, the Hawks are the 2010 Central Division champs for the first time in 17 years as a result of the Detroit loss. Congrats to the Hawks, but there is still much, much more to accomplish before this season is over.

The Buff at D experiment...
…is looking better all the time. Is Q a genius after all?
Dunc was +3 today- maybe he’s learning how to play with Buff. True, Dunc has more defensive responsibility, but that’s a lot of offense from the blue line.
Dunc’s offensive emphasis this year has made Marlboro 72 less of a “shutdown” pair anyway, and Seabs and Nintendo are looking pretty shutdowny right now. Plus, most playoff teams have multiple scoring lines.
But…pride goeth before the fall. In order to keep the mojo going, we need to continue to harp on negatives.
In that spirit, the PP is still fucking clown shoes. We’re doomed!
I thought the PP looked good
Not good enough to score, which is the point of a PP, but not clown shoes.
(170 g) * (3x10^8 m/s)^2 = 1.5x10^16 J
0 for 6
The operation was a success, but the patient died.
I agree the PP looked ok. I’m thinking of karma here- trying to find a black lining in a clear sky. I’m afraid of the blowback if we all start sucking the Hawks’ dicks just now.
Like I said
the PP failed to do what a PP is supposed to do. But it didn’t look clown shoes, either.
(170 g) * (3x10^8 m/s)^2 = 1.5x10^16 J
I think this is pretty on the nose
Clown shoes means so much more than just not scoring.
So the clown shoes may be off, but they still need to get the pucks in the net.
Are those like those toe socks

Barring the goal last night
I have to agree with you, if you consider what they’re used for it kind of makes sense. I think Konroyd pointed out today that Hjalphabet was matched up with Iginla and it obviously paid dividends. Buff is looking more like he knows what he’s doing, plus it doesn’t seem to be preventing him from being assigned net duty for the PP.
Also if you look at ice time for our D men, it seems to be distributed a little better now… I’m willing to live with D2K’s 26 mins at this point, and definitely willing to see only 14 mins for Sopel.
yeah sorry McClure, but you're being unfair to buff
I agree with cliff, buff has looked better than anyone could have expected and hasn’t made anymore mistakes than a typical defenseman.

I don't think he was saying Buff has played very badly
just that he negates what Dunc does well. Seabs stayed at home while Dunc was more active offensively, and Dunc now has to do that if Buff is going on adventures. So we’re losing that element of Dunc’s game.
I agree
Although I like Jelly-Biscuit, I would like to see what Dunc would be like with Hammer, whom I consider to be Seabs-lite. What do people think of a Buff-Seabs pairing?
MMMMMMMMMM.......
I like jelly & biscuits too! (In both a food sense and a hockey sense!)

2. A statement that does not follow logically from what preceded it.
I think it's not a bad pairing,
and agree with Hammer being Seabs-lite. But I’d really just rather see Seabs and Keith back together. I feel like the world is off-kilter when I don’t see 2 and 7 together. And as someone said elsewhere, Hammer is more used to being left alone so I think he’d be able to handle it better when Buff goes and forgets he’s playing D.
They're be a big pair - but maybe not so much 2 way threatening.
It would also pair two right-handed shots, and right-handed D usually don’t get called up to line up on left side.
Right-handed shooters are under one third of players (if I remember the split correctly). Left-handed shooters are more used to playing the off side.
Confusion will be my epitaph.
right
not saying it’s a bad pairing (though Buff on D is not my favorite), just that we’re losing the puck-moving part of Dunc’s game more with this pairing.
I feel like Buff's just one of those guys...
who benefits from being shuffled around a lot. It’s like it forces him to try hard, and when he does this, he can be a beast.

Buff and Duncs
It is nice to see Buff being able to contribute on the blue line while we have some people out.
As was mentioned in his interview in the postgame, both #2 and #33 have very different styles on the defensive end, and they are naturally trying to sort that out. But Buff alluded to how much being paired with Duncs is helping his own game out. While I think we can all agree that anyone would be an improved defenseman when paired with Keith, it’s nice to see Buff look back and gain a positive out of this experiment. I think that even though, at times, he can look out of place on defense, his size and hockey sense is growing as the season wares on.

Far and away the worst on the team.
Randomness, I guess.
larry. A kind word for everyone.
Every year someone seems to be the goat of the +/- stat
Last year Kane was a -2 despite being 2nd in scoring with 70 pts.
+/- can be misleading by itself because just like GAA, FO%, etc it is also a “team stat”. I don’t think it’s “random” but there’s usually much more to it. The bigger mindfuck for me is that Madden is 2 (especially since PK goals don’t count toward the +/ stat) and that Eager is +7.

Eager has Kopecky to thank
But I remember (not sure whether it was this season or last, probably this season) when Toews stole a +1 from Fraser because they just switched for a line change, with Toews stepping onto the ice seconds before a goal was scored. So yeah, it can be pretty flukey.
Madden’s stat though, isn’t that hard to fathom. As a checking center, his job is usually to contain other teams’ top lines. It isn’t often that the 3rd line would get as many scoring chances—the top priority is that they stifle other teams’. Buff did also spend a while on the 3rd line, so that could help explain his plus/minus rating as well.
We were a little spoiled last year with Bolland, Havlat and Ladd, though. Those guys, against the top lines of the league, were all plus players. Havlat actually led forwards in plus/minus.
But when it was suggested to him that Toews v. Kane seems likely to become a sidebar to every future international hockey tournament, he smiled and said: "I'd like us to win something together, too."

plus/minus is NOT random - it just isn't perfectly corelative (and you have to keep the player's role in mind)
when I was coaching, we just to keep pretty detailed stats on our players – when we periodically shared those stats with the kids, the only one that was bold print was the plus/minus. At those lower levels, it never failed that the players who were the best (not necessarily the highest scorers) were the high plus plus/minus guys
It is a bit different (far less clear cut) with pro players, because the roles are more defined and concrete.
Confusion will be my epitaph.
Randomness was my smartalecky response to
" he was out on the ice for 12 goals against more than he was on the ice when the Hawks scored?"

I feel that Buff's play on D is one of the big factors in the Hawks' recent surge since Soupy and Johnsson went down
Overstatement? I personally don’t think so. I was one of those people who said Buff going back to D would be a disaster. I’m happy to admit that he has proven me wrong and looks more comfortable every game. Even though one might suggest that his play has been for the most part just “pretty good”, it has been nothing short of “extraordinary” for a guy who had to transition back from the forward position. That has to be considered.
Could it actually be that Buff’s time on offense has allowed him to develop a secondary skill set which might well make him a two-way force to be reckoned with? A 6’-4" 250lb D-man who can hit like a truck but also play the transition? Also, the change in perspective may have simplified the defensive position for Buff. It’s early, but a part of me believes that we could actually see him back there again next year, depending on how many of our forwards get resigned and only if Sopel/Hendry doesn’t end up being our 3rd line.

what would you rather have? A top 4 of 2-7 and 4-51, or a top 4 of 2-33 and 4-7? The first I’d take in a heartbeat, but introduce the salary cap issues into the equation and we have a few interesting tradeoffs to consider.

are you talking playoff scenario?
Because I still don’t think Buff is a long-term solution at D. If he plays well through the end of the season, I’d be okay with starting him at D in the playoffs, but if we get far enough into the playoffs to allow Soupy to come back, it really shouldn’t even be an issue.
Agree that 2-7 4-51 is best...
…but the Hawks are crowded at forward. Rather than put Buff or Steeger on the 4th line, sit Sopel down and pair Buff w/ Hendry, if it comes to that.
I'll takes Sopes with Hendry over Buff.
Especially given Hendry’s inexperience. Playing with Sopel gives Hendry a chance to develop alongside a mature defenseman who can cover his brain farts (see last night, when Sopel saved Hendry’s bacon on a few occasions that saw Hendry out of position and the Flames potentially on the breakaway), whereas playing Hendry with Buff is begging for repeated odd-man rushes.

Some ass wipe behind me at the Calgary game
starts telling Sopel to sit down and get a job after Hendry got undressed and Sopel tried to cover. Just cause he was close to the puck when it was shot I guess it was his fault. I turned around and asked him, “OK. If Sopel sits, who’s playing 6th D…Kaner?” Shut him up for rest of game at least.
That said, I STILL think Sopel is the 9th D man on this team when all are healthy. I’m gonna guess he is the slowest Hawk on the team. I love his PK and attitude….but I hope he’s in the press box come playoff time getting tips from Burrish on picking up chicks.

no, not playoffs
Definitely not playoffs. Trixie was wondering whether Buff’s versatility is making him valuable as a player we should be keeping or as a player we can trade away. It wasn’t clear in my reply, but supposing Soupy returns and there’s a little bit of a logjam at defense, would people prefer Soupy (and his cap hit, which is one of the reasons he’s the guy I picked for this discussion) be traded away so Buff and possibly some other forward or two we otherwise might have to let go can be retained for 2011-2012, or would people prefer Buff traded away for possibly higher returns?

Honestly
I’d rather not lose any of our current D-corps. I just wasn’t sure if this puts Buff ahead of say Steeger in the Keep or Trade pile. I’d probably keep him, his versatility is great to have in these situations, then again, I don’t know what’s going to be up for grabs this summer or who’s worth what.
I don’t want to lose any of our D, Sharp and I’d like to keep Madden, too. Really, am I asking too much?
When Soupy’s back, I’d like to see 7-2, 4-51 and 5-6 or the dead man in there somewhere.

I agree 100%
Buff has been better than expected, but I would not keep him over Soupy, if that were even an option. I get that Soupy’s cap hit is high, but we’ve dealt with it so far and I think his pluses outweigh the negative that is his contract. I may be slightly biased.
I don’t think you are asking too much, Trixie, that is what I’m asking as well.
Also, I’m starting to believe Johnsson really did die, or at least lapsed into a coma. It’s been 3 plus weeks since he was on the ice. If they are really “saving” him for the playoffs, shouldn’t he at least get a look at the ice before they start?
I agree also
Soupy handles the puck much better than does Buff. (generally speaking) CNS mentioned that Buff is a 250 pound D man who can hit like a truck. My only comment to that is I don’t think he hits often enough. He’s like a gentle giant.
Regarding Johnsson – did anyone ever actually see his injury occur? I didn’t see it and I haven’t seen anyone in SCH comment on what happened. If he’s NOT dead, yes, it would be good to get him on the ice before the playoffs… If he IS dead, well, keep him on the ice where he is.
Doesn't Buff lead the team in hits? Chi?
I know I joke about him not hitting enough, but I think it’s like calling Kane lazy. It’s usually not true.

two possibilities
1) he’s bogarting the hits
2) few of his plays have had big game impact. I can only think of several games where I could name Buff as one of the three stars.
My complaint about Buff isn’t that he isn’t physical, or that he doesn’t use his shot (he’s 4th on the team with 200), but that his skating is sort of horrifyingly bad. That’s part of my reservation about him staying at D in the long run.

Buff's always been ahead of Steegs in the keep or trade pile for me.
Buff’s skill set (when he uses it) — size, shot, truculence — is not easily replaceable at the NHL level, and I don’t think Beach is quite ready to make that jump yet. Besides, Buff is only signed through next season.
Versteeg, on the other hand, sometimes plays like a poor man’s Kaner … if Kaner were beaten with the stupid stick.
by gmh on Apr 5, 2010 1:19 PM CDT up reply actions
Steeger IS the poor man's Kane
and agreed, Buff’s skill set being pretty rare in the NHL, though the caveat with him is, of course, it only works when he uses it.
But I’m highly idealistic and tend to put more value on effort (I do believe I’ve already written a treatise on the subject, so let us not delve into that further) so that even though I’ve always sort of figured Buff was ahead of Steegs in the keep or trade pile, I was always kinda hoping otherwise.

the mobile posts actually say that online (freaky).
I always very openly admit my typing incompetence – along with inate poor spelling.

Definitely the 1st option, no question about it
if Phantom 51 returns, but then there’s still the question of Phantom Limb Johnsson (hey, I made a “missing” dick joke and a wuss rock reference! How unexpected. I rock!!)
Would anyone prefer a Sopel/Buff pairing to Sopel/Hendry if Johnsson doesn’t pop up at some point and rear his ugly head? (I like to thank the academy…)

when Soupy gets back, Buf is no longer top 4 D - and he costs too much to be 5/6 D
he sort of costs too much to be a 3rd or 4th line forward too – even though it is nice to have guys that can play either D or F as the need arises.
Confusion will be my epitaph.
By this logic...
….Soup could only play on a top pairing. Salries don’t really seem relevant between now and June.
I want Buff suited up for every playoff game, one way or another. God knows the guy is rested.
And parking him on the 4th line seems like a waste.
Top 4 D and top 2 lines are not the same spit as there to 5/6 D or 3rd/4th line
Top 4 D and top 2 lines are your big minutes/big production sets, and placement between the 2 sets is just coaches line matching.
For example – Hossa and Kane. Which RW should be 1st line and which 2nd? That is driven by the rest of the line combos and is essentially irrelevant as to labeling.
Confusion will be my epitaph.
Not sure I quite agree w/ this...
…but it’s tangential to my main point.
I stand by my original comment, starting with the misspelling of “Salaries” (and yes, I stand by that misspelling.)
3rd defensive pairing gets more minutes, and is more important, than the 4th line.
5/6 D pair is more important than 4th line
I certainly agree there, but you still don’t pay 5/6 D guys $3.3 mil a year like Buf gets
Confusion will be my epitaph.
We have enough talent on our team
That I think you’re right. Of course D2K and our top forwards are so good that you can still go ahead and pull out a “top” out of both forwards and D.
I think Buff is capable of playing D on a 2nd pairing (when the pairing with Duncs on it is our 1st), but unless we get a very good deal I would expect Soup to be top 4 D. I’m willing to sacrifice a couple forwards for that if necessary — he plays an important role in both zones and special teams.
Buff
I’d like to agree his moving back to D had something to do with the team’s general resurgence. Even if it didn’t, I think everyone can agree that it wasn’t a nightmare like many thought. I was skeptical too, but if you remember back when the idea came up, some were vehemently opposed, to the point of being rude. Those people should be seeing crow feathers in their poop right about now.
I was pleasantly surprised at Buff on D too
Scary thing is, assuming Johnsson has risen on Easter, does Buff or Sopel sit? Hoping it’s Sopel actually, but if it IS Buff, are we back to Q’s line-o-rama? Where does he put Buff (I don’t see him sitting come playoffs)?
Sopel doesn't sit in any scenario I can come up with
He’s not as bad as we suggest IMO and we need him for the PK. I’m also not ready to go as far as to say I want to see Buff on the PK – if ever.
Well, folks, I want to thank you for being here for the recording of my live comedy album. Funny material and laughter will be dubbed in later.
by ChicagoNativeSon on Apr 5, 2010 1:32 PM CDT up reply actions
So where do you put Buff then if not on D?
Lines seem to be jelling a bit….about as much as can be expected from Q. I can’t see Buff sitting if he puts on his playoff jockey cup again this year. Line-o-rama? Seems D might be the least of all evils team wise.
No, I don't see Buff sitting
Q seems to be the type of coach who rewards players, and Buff should be rewarded. Plus, I would never suggest sitting Buff in almost any scenario. If Johnsson comes back, then Buff to the 3rd pair with Sopel? With Soupy back in the mix, I would expect Buff moving back to forward, with a number of options on who would sit depending on the opponent, and who’s hot/who’s not.

Hmmmmm. Why
do you like Sopel more than Hendry (besides the 1 goal yesterday.)? I rather sit Sopel vs. sit Hendry if Big J comes back.
Not sure this is CNS's reason
but Sopel does have his PK and puck magnet abilities in his favor and Hendry hasn’t been on the PK. I don’t know if I would pick Sopel over Hendry, but those are reasons in Sopel’s favor.
actually, we've had every regular player except Eager on the PK
as this chart shows, though Hendry is rarely there. I’m guessing he shows up when it’s Sopel sitting in the box. It could be an interesting post, if I followed this sort of thing often.
Kane was on the PK with Hossa last night, while Tazer was serving time. Nearly got a shorty too. But the PK was close to expiring then (which is when, I think, Q likes putting Kane out there) so he could have taken that shot after the PK was over.
But when it was suggested to him that Toews v. Kane seems likely to become a sidebar to every future international hockey tournament, he smiled and said: "I'd like us to win something together, too."

I should have said "regularly" on the PK
I know they’ve all taken shifts at different times, likely due to penalties/injuries. I’ve only seen Kane go out at the ends of PKs, too. That in itself is a big step for Kane.
isn't it?
they grow up so fast.

Agree about Sopel PK
When he doesn’t have to skate more than 20 feet at a time I agree he is very unselfish regarding puck blocks etc. But not sure 3 or 4 minutes a game on PK makes up for lost opps due to speed the other shifts in the game.
I won't argue that Sopel 2009-10 does not fit the Hawks system very well
but that is a different topic altogether from the current situation IMO.
Well, folks, I want to thank you for being here for the recording of my live comedy album. Funny material and laughter will be dubbed in later.
by ChicagoNativeSon on Apr 5, 2010 2:21 PM CDT up reply actions
I like Hendry
but Sopel’s experience and believe it or not, versatility (yes, I just said that), trumps Hendry for the current situation. One rookie at a time please. Plus, Hendry has been lucky that many of his errors have been covered up. It’s funny when in the comments section (I didn’t read yesterday’s GDT, but in the past), Sopel gets blindly blamed for goals because he is in the crease area, but the collapse was often elsewhere. Hendry got undress badly a few times yesterday too.
Regarding Sopel’s versatility. Although he has definitely slowed, he has always been a decent assist man throughout his career and even fared pretty well his first year with the Hawks. His role this year has been completely different, but the “know how” is there.
Well, folks, I want to thank you for being here for the recording of my live comedy album. Funny material and laughter will be dubbed in later.

I like Sopel
of course, if you notice my name on here, I tend to like D-men. Yes, it is because I was a D-man, and Yes, I am also harder on them because of it. But I also tend to stick up for them too. I almost got into a fight at the Blues stadium because a guy behind me was slamming both Sopel and Buff anytime someone took a shot at the Hawks goal.
Think of it this way, we currently have a team of players that are as fast as formula 1 cars, and Sopel is a 49 pick-up. Ugly as sin, and made of solid fucking steel.
/Note unceasing sarcastic laughter in background.

I completely agree with your analogy
(I’ve been saying it all season and if you notice my comment directly above the one you replied to, I implied the same) He has quickly become a remnant of the old system (but then you would have to argue we actually had one). But, those hot rods break down quite easily. I don’t mind having an old reliable on the 3rd d-line where speed isn’t as much of a factor.

I thought Hammer
should have been in the three stars tonight. He had a great game, especially early with big hits, shutdown hits and blocked shots, plus the key assist on the first goal. I like the pairing of him and Seabrook.
Since we’re on a stretch of good goaltending, good defense and decent power play there’s a topic we’ve glossed over a few times but is worth discussing outside of the usual sky-is-falling crap. I get the sense that aside from Hossa, the Hawks aren’t a very accurate shooting team. How many times this season have we peppered a goalie only to have him stand on his head? They solved Kipper pretty well today so maybe this isn’t the best day to bring this up, but the Hawks seem to underperfom on scoring for the number of quality chances they have. And the SOG totals don’t count the often large number of quality chances that don’t even hit the net. I’m not worried that this is some harbinger of doom for their playoff hopes, more a source of angst.
I too am liking Hammer-Seabrook. HEY TRIXIE....
I haven’t read the GDT for today, so sorry if this was said before….BUT

Is a shot blocking king. I also liked his dive in the first period to take away a scoring chance, blocker side, on Niemi.
TOFTBO
and his ability to take a pounding (not just blocking shots but absorbing and giving out hits) has really endeared him to me. I think it’s been said that he is our most consistent D man, and for that reason, I would say it’s more important we make sure we keep him than anybody else.
Also, even if Biscuit’s still making a few bad decisions, I think he’s made a couple of good plays blocking out the empty part of the net (effectively making a save) in the past couple games… seems to have gotten a little lost in the bad, but there’s plenty of good there too.
Completely unrelated to anything...

05/04/2010
Pelicans goalkeeper Antti Niemi has been chosen to lead the lion Shedden crew Karjala tournament. Karjala Tournament is part of the Euro Hockey Touria and play at the Hartwall Arena from 9 to 11.11. Antti Niemi will share responsibility for the fight against Jokerit goalie Jussi Markkanen. Participates in a tournament in Finland, Tshekin, Russian and Swedish national teams. Pelicans coach Hannu Aravirta was extremely satisfied with the choice of Antin. “Antti is redeemed the place really tough competition – Finland is the promised land of goaltenders – hard performance boy. Here we can see that a successful team also raises the flourishing of individuals.”
um, hang on a second here
the tournament will be held November 9 2011. That article was dated (assuming European format and, you know, the stability of the time-space continuum) April 5, 2010.
What happens if we re-sign him?

Hossa/Toews/Sharp have indeed been playing their heads off. It makes me sad not to see Toews and Kane together, though. It’s like a part of them is missing when the other isn’t on the ice. When I see Kaner out there, I get annoyed when Toews isn’t where I expect him to be to receive a pass, but then I realize that Toews isn’t even on the line and feel sort of weird about blaming Bolland for not being in the same spot I’d expect Marvel to be.

I think the question for Q should be which group of forwards would be a great supporting cast for Kane. Honestly, I think Bolland’s game is starting to heat up, as evidenced over the last few games, and would like to see him remain the C. If we let this simmer, we’ll be seeing great results in the last few games before the postseason.

Watched the game at my parents
And I have to say watching the game with my dad is as entertaining as the GDT. “WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING?” “YOU’RE TERRIBLE!” “PAT FOLEY IS AWFUL – I MISS LLOYD PETIT!” I got a few bonus stories as well from the time my parents were season ticket holders from 69-76. Good times.
"FACEOFF!" "Makes the pass." "FIGHT!" - 8 bit hockey
That's ironic
I watched the game at my parents’ house too, and my mother of all people (not someone who talks about sports) was bringing up old stories – and naming specific player names! – from when my folks were season ticket holders back in the 50’s-60’s. It made me love that woman just a little bit more, if that is possible. Good times indeed!
Well, folks, I want to thank you for being here for the recording of my live comedy album. Funny material and laughter will be dubbed in later.

I was fortunate enough
today to hear my dad talk about seeing the Bentley brothers,“Mush” March and Bill Mosienko play and naming the1945 Cubs roster. I’ve heard these stories a hundred times before but I’ll never get tired of them.
Maybe, just once, someone will call me 'Sir' without adding, 'You're making a scene."
That's wild
One of the players my mother mentioned was Mosienko. My dad and mom went to a lot of games when they were dating and before they had kids. I now know how that feels! I never get tired of the stories either.

I'm not knowledgeable on bars in general
Seeing as I don’t drink (except when I decide to disregard my possible allergy), I don’t make it out much. I went to Beckett’s on Stone Street (it’s next to Ulysses) for the gold medal game and they had it on their projectors, but I don’t know if they’re always that hockey-friendly.
It could be near-zero tolerance
but I get tipsy after one drink and sick after two (I’m serious — it ended badly last time). It kind of sucks that I miss all the good stuff in between.
You must have
aldehyde dehydrogenase deficiency. Most common among people of eastern asian descent.

one sport’s fans seem to universally hate the one, and the other sport’s fans have (almost) nothing but respect for the other.
(170 g) * (3x10^8 m/s)^2 = 1.5x10^16 J
i don't even care at this point
answer it if you want, but don’t expect a clever punchline
(170 g) * (3x10^8 m/s)^2 = 1.5x10^16 J
in that case
I think it has to do with the way every team knows that if they have a great player, that one day, they won’t be able to afford them anymore, because they don’t have the unlimited bank account the Yankees do. They just spend their way to the championship. Which is kind of the american way, but it’s frustrating as hell if you’re a fan of any other team. There’s no salary cap in MLB, just the “luxury tax”.
I haven’t been following hockey long enough to get a sense of the Habs.
I thought it meant
baseball fans hate the Yankees, and hockey fans respect the Habs. I had to read it several times though so I coudl be wrong.

for everything but temp
i get annoyed when people act like there’s anything logical about Celsius
(170 g) * (3x10^8 m/s)^2 = 1.5x10^16 J
I guess 0 and 100 are easy to remember for freezing and boiling water,
but i agree. I like the smaller degrees for temperatures…78 just sounds so much better than 25

he wasn't nearly that bad when i started commenting
it really went down the tubes for mjthor sometime around thanksgiving. he stuck around for a couple months more, but nothing was the same after his rants against HIBLD started. and then, as you mentioned earlier, there was that GDT when he was just an asshole.

by blackhawkeyes on Apr 5, 2010 12:15 AM CDT up reply actions
my comment on thor
might have come off wrong. i loved thor, he was my favorite commenter, and SCH really lost a valuable member. but there was one GDT, evidently the St. Louis road trip thread, where he went out of his way to be an asshole to everyone, commenting on every new comment and insulting people, basically taking over the thread by being more of an asshole than anyone else.
i still miss him, and his game-day beers.
(170 g) * (3x10^8 m/s)^2 = 1.5x10^16 J
I sensed the next day that many of the older members seemed to feel that way

By the way, here is what I commented yesterday about thor. If that is “hating on him” then idk…

Didn't read the GDT's
but I was very impressed with the Hawks and love these lines. As I mentioned a week ago, I’ve always wanted to see Daydream Nation split up to see how it works and so far so good. Even though I had “predicted” a Hawks loss today in my fanpost, I was obviously cheering for a win and totally expected one. After watching the NJ game, I finally saw the fight that has been missing from this team and they’ve been putting forth a full 60 minutes of effort. Today they really looked like a team on a mission and I hope this turns into a run to end the regular season heading into the playoffs like last year. And although I’m not concerned with catching SJ, home ice throughout is never a bad thing.

I'm greedy. I want the #1 seed, and I think it's definiely doable
I only listened to the game/watched the highlights since I was driving back to school, but it sounded like a good one. I’m glad the first 2 lines are clicking, but it seems like I only heard Madden and Versteeg’s names once in the third period or so. the third line seems pretty invisible now, and I don’t know how to fix it without screwing up the other lines (even the 4th line, which apparently decided to show up for the last 10 games of the season)

not only were there the usual post-game comments and non-game comments, but also comments about the Sharks-Avs game and the Yankees-Red Sox opener all mixed together. Makes for some strange soup….

the other-game commentary
seemed pretty normal; we tend to do west coast updates in the postgame thread as well as east coast updates in the pregame. There was a lot of OT stuff going on, too, which I’m okay with, but it made me forget this was a hockey board for a few minutes!
One idea for cutting down on OT comments
Is to collectively help GET MEESHAK A JOB!!! Or a girlfriend. either of those may help cut down on his postings. :)
….umm, it may just be easier to get him a job actually…..

getting the girls isn't so much M's problem as keeping them
If I’ve been following this all correctly.
First dates – frequent. Second dates – rare. Isn’t this the problem?
Confusion will be my epitaph.
that's why I said 'then'
…I’m not sayin’ she’s a gold-digger…
…but Dutch treat at Taco Bell is a tough first impression.
but you made my day. Thanks.
I feel like I’ve made big strides from being a total dickhead to shinkicker less than a week ago.
ha ha, no problem
It made me picture meeshak (who is a nerdy 11 year old in my mental image) counting his coins and studying the Taco Bell board trying to figure out what he could buy his date.
We all have moments (or comments) we’d like back. It’s funny to me how excited I get when I get a comment rec’d or tell make a joke that people get. So I’m glad you got a good moment to outweigh the bad.
but I thought
that’s what the McDonald’s dollar menu was for?
But when it was suggested to him that Toews v. Kane seems likely to become a sidebar to every future international hockey tournament, he smiled and said: "I'd like us to win something together, too."

Even with their stronger than typical exchange rate against USD
meeshak’s Canadian dollars still go further in Mexican
Well, folks, I want to thank you for being here for the recording of my live comedy album. Funny material and laughter will be dubbed in later.

the more you know...
yet another reason those second dates are hard to come by?

Anyone else think the team is better now offensively because of the goaltending?
Seems with more confidence in Niemi day by day, the Hawks are getting a little more aggressive breaking out and going for the breakaway or odd man rush. Forwards are taking a few more chances. This puts pressure on the other team and doesn’t allow their D to pinch in as much making it easier to get out of the zone. Is that my fertile imagination again or has that helped the Hawks forwards get a bit more swagger back since Bizzaro world days?
I think the fact that Niemi got an assist proves your point
Niemi is simply a better offensive goalie than Huet. Who could argue that??

No No No
I have to admit I yelled SHOOT more yesterday than I did the whole year when Niemi had the puck and Calgary had an empty net. That said, not going Huet vs Niemi here. I was just watching at the game yesterday and it did seem players were breaking out earlier and more aggressively than in recent dog days. Just wondering if anyone else sees the same thing?
No, I agree
I think we’ve been suggesting it for quite a while that since the Hawks are such a balanced team that strength or weakness in one area affects the other areas more than usual. Classic case of “confidence breeds success”.

I get the idea that - to some extent - the D settling back down a bit
the offense and goaltending have both benefitted.
I’d certainly be willing to believe that the D & gaoltending improvement has been a symbiotic thing – mutually giving the nice level equillibrium that lets the offense cook too
Confusion will be my epitaph.
I agree with this
and there was the initial upheaval of 3 Dmen getting hurt within days of each other (actually, in consecutive games. I hadn’t realized that). There was the subsequent juggling to figure out who was going to do what with whom and when, and I think once that’s been somewhat decided, the guys have been able to get more comfortable and back to reacting instead of thinking.
Now, they were playing somewhat poorly before the injuries, but I still feel that was on more of an effort level than a comfort/skill level.
Stupid Irrelevant Question:
We missed out on the Hawks aprons yesterday (wtf?? we were one of the first few in our section), and my friend really wanted one. Would anyone sell/trade/give away one?
Sanguis Bibimus. Corpus Edimus. Tolle Corpus Sharpi.
Sorry, all of ours are accounted for/claimed/etc
Out of curiosity though, what time did you arrive at the arena? We were there maybe 15 minutes after and considering how crazy the lines have been for the bobbleheads, I was a little worried we’d not get the aprons.

I don't have one, but if someone offers it to you for free
may I suggest you agree in return to wear it next time you perform and post pics?
Kind of like the way SamFels wore his Hawks jersey when he did stand up (not sure if he still does?)

A few things
Yeah I’d wear it. I wore my Toews jersey shirt for 2 sets during HWAA (understated enough to not be labeled an attention whore, I hope), and I’ve worn more embarrassing things before.
BUT, this would be for my friend Steve. He is a much better than I am, but almost never plays shows. He would probably be willing to wear it also, though it’s anybody’s guess when. Since the world will end in 2012 there is a strong chance it would would go unworn in public.

It's kind of weird
that the world’s going to end in two years.

apparently, there will be big ships to save a select few
or so the movie 2012 told me Saturday. And Wisconsin will be the center of North America or the new north pole, I forget which.
North Dakota is the geographical center of North America
so I doubt such a minor shift would be noticed by most people, yet alone cause the world’s demise.
Now, a shift further east, to let’s say Michigan…

ok, then WI was the new north pole
the magnetic whatevers changed or something. I don’t know, I was still freaked out by the tsunamis and shifting of the earth’s crust that caused the changes.

It’s not just an SCH thang, it’s a band.

These one of a kind collector's items??? Free???!!!!
I’d have to know you could use it properly before doing such a thing. Perhaps if you offered to host a pre-playoff BBQ so I can see you’d put it to good use……
Top ten goals of the NHL
Hossa and Toews made the top of the list
I went to a fight the other night and a hockey game broke out.
- Rodney Dangerfield
wow, I didn't think they'd rank so high
but that’s cool. I’m pretty amused, though, at how some of the goals featured look more to me like lucky accidents—think “What if Dennis Wideman scored on ”http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gMdX_A2iLuM" target="new">that shootout attempt?"
