Yes, Tom Petty, the waiting is the hardest part, and now it's thankfully over.  The two teams that have pretty much been eyeballing each other since January finally get down to it in the Conference Finals.  Reading the previews of the neutrals around, those who aren't emotionally involved in this series are dying of excitement to see it.  Which means those of us who are passionately involved, this series will be torture.  Up and down, chances galore, big saves, big goals, close games, heart in your throat most of the time, heartburn, panic, it's call coming over the next two weeks.

While we like to make the case of rust for the Sharks, the Hawks only have three less days of rest, and haven't had five days off like this since....September?  August?  Olympic break for some, I guess.  So I'm not sure the question of recency matters today.  But be it form or nerves, this is probably the Hawks best chance to grab one in The Tank, which they need at some point.  The Sharks haven't played, and most of them are making their first appearance in a Conference Final.  This should be old hat for the Hawks after last year's trip, so jump on them early.

We've broken it all down for you over the past few days.  Coach Q isn't going to get all the match ups he wants, so every line is going to have to bring it.  We'd love to see Toews get his shots at Thornton, just to see if Thornton really is over his playoff-flop tendencies.  However it works, the Hawks have to make sure they don't get Vick's Vapo-rubbed in the face-off dot.  This is the league's best team at it, and continually giving them the puck is probably not the way to victory.  We know the Hawks centers aren't going to improve overnight, so as we mentioned on the podcast the Hawks wingers have to do a far better job of getting in there and helping out.  Countless times the Canucks wingers were able to shoot in and grab pucks of draws the Hawks had actually won.  Can't happen here, San Jose is far too dangerous.

Traffic in front is a common refrain, but vital once again.  Nabokov is small, hates it, and can get beaten that way.  Someone tell Buff he's still in Vancouver.

And....here....we....go.

Waiting on a Sunday Afternoon, for what I read between the lines.

Well, as Sam said we’ve known that this was the inevitable match-up for the conference finals since January, in fact, you can make the case that this looked inevitable in November.

Thanks to the Scum the ‘Hawks start this series on the road but hasn’t that been the recipe for success in 2010? Road ice-advantage perhaps? We’ll see if this trend continues.

As for the predictions, everyone can break it down anyway they like it but I don’t see Hossa losing to Heatley – I just don’t. ’Hawks in 6.

The ‘Hawks haven’t won a playoff Game One on the road since 2002 when Potsy, or Alexander Karpovtsev, scored the winner on “the invincible-for-whatever-reason” Brent Johnson. Please erase this man from the books forever and win this one.

Also, 3 out of the 4 teams that won the first game on the second round lost the series. Add to the that, if you take out the Game One’s that ended in OT the team that has won Game One is 2-7 overall. Either way it’s not the end of the world.

Your song for today (if you haven’t already firgured it out in the title) is STP’s Interstate Love Song. Fuckin’ classic so enjoy.

Inevitable?

I thought everyone assumed SJ would choke in round 1 and be long gone by the WCF.

by Katherine215 on May 16, 2010 12:09 PM CDT up reply actions

I didn’t think they’d lose to the Avalanche at all. The Avs’ were too young and inexperienced for the Sharks and I still believed that after Boyle scored on his own net in Game 3.

As far as the win over Detroit goes, no I didn’t expect them to win but I did think the Wings were overrated this season going into the playoffs especially with Howard in goal. The injury excuse was tiring and with that it really didn’t suprise me that the Sharks won. What did suprise me was the production from “Jumbo” Joe Thornton. Good for him I guess.

I actually read this

all the way through today. I can’t tell if it was nerves or the coffee. Either way, I’m glad I did, since you included that nice bit about the Game One winners being only 2-7 this year. That way, if the Hawks lose, I won’t feel that bad, and when they win, I’ll still be pretty sure they’ll take the series.

This is totally off-topic, but I’ve been wondering for a while: how old are you, Hawks61?

I watched the '92 playoff run in a bar in St. Louis.

For the finals, me and some Pens fan were the only ones in there watching hockey. Every time the Pens goalie (Barasso?) got a save the guy would yell, “And Barasso says no!” I wanted to punch him. Especially as the series went on and got uglier.

And for the record, beer battered onion rings combined with beer and Hawks’ losses does not go well on the digestive system. I still have trouble eating onion rings!

Urgent- the end is near!

With 7 v. 8 in the ECF, and SJ and the Hawks finishing 2-3 in the league this year, ya gotta treat this series like the SCF. Play your asses off for 4 games- if that ain’t enough, repeat for up to 3 more games. Kitchen sink mentality. Marlboro 72 gets half a game, and Souper Nintendo most of the other half. Burish gets a megaphone and a strategic spot on the bench.

An urgent Hawks team is a terrible (in its original sense) thing to see. Didn’t see it in either series opener yet- in fact, it’s been largely limited to (a) the game 5 Nashville frenzy, (b) game 2 against Vancouver after getting down 2-0, and © game 6 against Vancouver after the game 5 tub-shitting.

Game 6 was a thing of beauty- Bolland’s resurgence feels like the last piece falling into place. Q has been harping on keeping this going- we’ll soon see if he’s successful here.

Jump on these bastards and keep stomping. The longer the series goes, the more SJ benefits from the long layoff.

Pedal to metal. Young, fresh legs. The end is near.

Gentlemen! I have invented...this thing!

by cliffkoroll on May 16, 2010 12:02 PM CDT reply actions

Both teams have had a good, long layoff.

If the Hawks make it through, I’d rather this series go 6 games. That way, they won’t be too hot on themselves going into the SCF, because those East teams will jump on any arrogance like a kamikaze hitting the side of the Bunker Hill.

Flyers fan here...

Good luck to you all. Have been pulling for the Hawks all season and was hoping for a Flyers and Hawks Stanley Cup from day one. I think the Hawks are clearly the better team, with its only weakness being your goalie. I think the Hawks defense will more than make up for that deficiency and I expect to see the Hawks win the west in 6 games. Good luck. Go Hawks.

How does me being a Flyers fan make me have to reconsider the obvious that Nabakov is better than Niemi? Just like Halak is better than Leighton. But in both cases, I expect the teams superior defense to be the difference maker?

Broduer is better than Boosh but Boosh played better, not to mention the Flyers defense, and their forwards blocking shots…see Gagne, Carter and Lappy as evidence of that. The Flyers goalies have been successful because of their defense, not because Emery, Boucher, and Leighton are all good goalies. But like I said, the Hawks will win because of guys like Keith, and Sopel being the shut down defenders that they are. The Hawks have been my 2nd favorite team for the last few years so I am really looking forward to seeing them smack the Sharks back to being the choke artists that they are.

On two things we agree: giving the nod to Nabokov, and the absurdity of the eastern conference this year.

Absolutely the East has been ridiculous this year, and maybe I am a homer for saying this but I think the Flyers were always better than a 7th place team. Their biggest issue all year has been consistency and certainly you saw that last series vs the Bruins. Though I personally thought Washington was going to lose to the Habs in the first round, I did not expect the Habs to beat Pittsburgh as well.

For those of us who pay attention to the East regularly, the only real surprises were the Bruins beating the Sabres in the first round and the Habs beating the Pen’s. I personally was expecting a Pens and Sabres ECF.

I think the Flyers and the Canadiens are the embodiment of bottom seeds: teams that can play really well, but often don’t. In other words, mediocre. Against the less-than-stellar eastern teams, they’ve done very well in the playoffs, but it still makes me question how many teams make the playoffs.

I lived in Montreal during most of the season, so I’m well versed with much of the East. I’m with you on the Habs beating Caps, then Pens. The first wasn’t a surprise, the second was

Well I do think the Flyers are better than a bottom seed but I certainly can’t argue with their record and their points. They were a good team minus one absolutely brutal stretch earlier in the year which got their coach fired.

The Flyers will beat the Habs. It’s only a matter of time before Philadelphia beats the coach that, before this season, could only beat Philadelphia in the playoffs in Ottawa.

Unfortunately for Martin, Hossa is Chicago and Halak won’t turn into 2002 Lalime again.

Exactly.

Just like I said how the Flyers have had success with GA despite having 3 guys being their starting goalies at some point during the year. Emery, Bouch and Leights are not as good as their numbers indicated but rather they benefit from the defense and the systems played in front of them. Exactly like Niemi.

let SJ show their hand on which matchup they want. Need to get decent minutes for the 4th line in the first two periods, regardless of how the game is going. If SJ is only going with three lines it will be a key coaching matchup to see the Hawks rotate 4 at full speed to play to a 3rd period energy advantage.

Best way to burn off any nervous energy they may have is to take the body early, the Jeremy Roenick school of playoff hockey. Let’s go boys, set the right tone from the start.

first period stats

Shots: CHI 8—13 SJS (Kane with 4)
Missed shots: CHI 6—2 SJS
Hits: CHI 11—12 SJS (Brouwer with 3)
Blocked shots: CHI 7—7 SJS (Boyle with 3)
Faceoffs: CHI 45%—55% SJS

Considering they had three PP opportunities (logging 4 shots) to our … none, not bad.

by gmh on May 16, 2010 2:59 PM CDT reply actions

We're dominating Corsi so far

Toews and Keith with 6, Buff and Kane with 8
Thornton and Heatley -7, and Marleau -9

That period looked pretty even to me, though — could’ve just as easily been 1-1 or 1-0 Hawks.

great game thus far, sj has the early energy, but chi showed glimpses of dominance too.

great to see the best 2 teams in hockey going at it.

"Devin Setoguchi’s haircut has released the dragon" ~Drew Remenda

For some reason I have a feeling Jumbo is going to be a goddamn beast this year. Sharks are going to be tied 1-1 in the series going on the road for game three in the first round, and five minutes into the second he is just going to take over. ~Plank

I think the officiating is not good

But Devorski is just an idiot; it’s not an NHL conspiracy! It’ll kill us sometimes and kill our opponents other times.

by rsncrntz on May 16, 2010 3:04 PM CDT up reply actions

i tend to blame the speed and complexity of the game

more then inept officiating. i believe this is the fastest most physical game on earth- moreso after the lockout. our high angle view lets us see an angle far superior to the refs eye level view. just hard to compare, ya know?

that they catch half of what goes on is incredible. just MHO

Niemi stood tall, Hawks did many good things.

would have loved to have had the first, but ill take a successful next 20mins
i have to think that some of those chintzy penalties in the 1st will come back karma wise and we’ll get some PP chances in the 2nd, sans clown shoes most preferable.
the PKs were BIG and to see we can STILL create chances shorthanded is something the Sharks are going to have to think about.
Toews seems like he’s about to go into berserker mode anytime soon
