One: Canucks 5 - Hawks 1 Wrap

First off, my utmost apologies for not having a preview ready.  There is simply no excuse I can provide.  In the midst of printing tonight's Indian, it simply slipped my mind.  Thankfully I have a brother I don't deserve to pinch hit, but that doesn't mean that's something that can happen.  The three writers of this site, myself by far in the lead, take far too much leeway in our reputations as drunken layabouts, and it won't happen again.

Secondly, we don't seem to have any pictures available tonight, so there won't be any of those.

Right, to the game.  I won't bore you with the linear recap, we'll just get to bullet points:

CORSI

SHIFT CHARTS

(I'll get to these later)

-I suppose there are some who expect me to rant and rave and flagellate myself like I did after Game 3 against Nashville, but I don't feel that way.  We'll get to that in a moment.

-First the bad.  The 2nd period was so flat I expected all of us to be charged with pedophilia.  The Hawks had serious struggles with the 2nd in the March swoon of misery, and it reared its ugly head again.  They were beaten to every loose puck, lost every battle, and their defensive coverage looked like old people fucking.  Other than that, I can't think of anything else to criticize.  Whatever you think of the Canucks, they are a very good team, and require 60 minutes to be beaten.

-The Hawks broke two cardinal rules, which are don't give up a goal in the last or first minute of a period.  There's your ballgame.

-We haven't said word boo recently about goaltending being the Hawks' downfall, but I'm not sure where else you start tonight.  Ehrhoff's goal cannot go in, I don't care if Sharp is screening you.  You cannot serve that rebound for the Canucks' 2nd out to the slot like a virgin being offered to a dictator.  The 4th Canucks goal is a puck that's got to be covered.  It's simply too much.  Tonight, the difference between the Hawks blue line and the Canucks was made up for and then some by the difference between the Canucks goalie and ours.  This is the third game in a row Niemi has looked jumpy, to put it mildly.  Though Q in his postgame did not put anything on Niemi, there will be serious thought to starting Huet on Monday.  If nothing else, it might electro-shock the Hawks into being solidly defensively again, which they were far from tonight.

-Troy Brouwer, what the hell happened to you?  Your ass used to be beautiful.

-Ok, now that that's all out of the way, I don't think it's as bad as the score looks.  The 1st period came out exactly as we all thought it would.  It was open.  The Canucks D looked helpless at times.  The Hawks piled up 17 shots, and some real bonafide chances.  Vancouver took penalties.  Kane missed an open net.  So i really don't want to hear or read that the Hawks started flat, because that's simply not the case.  But Luongo stood tall, and you have to give him credit.  While he didn't always look so smooth, he kept the pucks out, and that's all that's asked.

-While we're giving credit, the Canucks were awesome tonight.  If they can roll out three more efforts like that, it'll be serious trouble.  Thing is, I don't think they can.

-The power play is a disaster.  The puck or bodies don't move.  All I ask is that one of them do.

-Why are our forward still crashing down below the circles in the defensive zone?

-It didn't take long for Q to hit the old Line Slot Machine again.  Everyone played with everyone.  If this were the 60's it would have been an orgy.

-Right, positive.  Looking at the Corsi, no one got murdered out there.  It simply came down to the Canucks burying every chance they had.  The Hawks didn't.

-I don't know what else to say here.  It's best of 7, not one.  The Hawks pulled this act last round and last time they saw this team in the playoffs.  Such a long way to go.  You don't get style points in the postseason.

…for astuteness. I really would have liked the Hawks make Vancouver break a bit of a sweat in the 3rd period. Winning wasn’t the point- sending a message other than “looks like you got us today” was.

Disappointing. Uncharacteristic. I’m very interested to see how Monday’s game starts.

They really needed to plonk down two goals

in that 5-on-3. They got a garbage one and then just rolled over and continued dying.

Very good points indeed...

…and so far this years hawks team seems to be a bit behind in the “desire” department since about February of this year.

It takes three things to win a cup; talent, desire and discipline, and there are times, where a team with a little less talent, can beat more talented teams by being better in the other two departments.

Let’s hope the Hawks don’t leave anything on the table the rest of the way – especially the part about desire and discipline.

Huet...

I’m a pretty big Niemi supporter, and I still firmly believe he can be a very good goalie in the future, but if I’m Q I start Huet on Monday. For a couple reasons: first, Niemi struggled a bit against the Nucks through 4 games this year. Second, if Niemi is cold, go to Huet: this isn’t a team built on goaltending, and we all know that, and Huet had a scoreless third, and with a team as stacked as the Hawks, maybe that’s all he needs to get re-warmed up.

As Duncs said, it can’t get any worse. So, give the reigns to Huet. See if he can right the ship. If not, Aunti’s on the bench. And hell, after Columbus, the Frenchman’s due for a few good ones.

by mrb88 on May 2, 2010 1:35 AM CDT reply actions

Huet's got new pads

One one red stripe on top of white instead of several. He’s now changed them three times since signing with us. Wonder if it’s a luck thing — he seems to change them whenever he gets into a funk. I haven’t noticed other goalies around the league changing their gear as much as he has in the last two seasons.

Also, Huet only faced three shots in the third, but I’m an apologist, and it would be interesting to see what Q decides to do.

by gmh on May 2, 2010 1:40 AM CDT up reply actions

I suspect you don't notice other goalies changing pads because they have more than one identical looking set

Huet seems to think of them more like a woman thinks of shoes, while most goalies look at the more like haveing a few pairs of essentially identical black wingtips

Confusion will be my epitaph.

by krome on May 2, 2010 4:39 PM CDT up reply actions

Wouldn't be surprised if they changed them a lot

A 3 save shutout for Huet

You’re right. Toss him in.

Our problem tonight was a lack of willing to fight for pucks. We didn’t try. In the third when we were down 5 goals, we decided to try and make a comeback. The Hawks may have won the series last year with comebacks, but I wouldn’t count on it happening again.

I have no idea why Q didn’t have any real energy guys out there tonight. Terrible, terrible decision by him. Hopefully his goofy ass learns his lesson and dresses some of the real energy guys out there or the Hawks are gonna come out flat-footed several more times, right before they pack their bags and hit the golf course.

It's nice..

…to see even a sliver of humility on this blog regarding this series. The predictions of a near sweep, and the comments about not seeing how the Canucks could possibly win this series had me a bit dumbfounded. I mean, I know about being a homer. There are more than enough of those in Vancouver too. it’s called being a fan. But the blogs in Vancouver are much more even handed. Hell, listen to the podcast the other night that Mike from the Kurtenblog participated in.

I can tell you as a Canucks fan that I don’t now how the series will play out, but I can tell you for sure that the team is in a head space I have not seen in a long time. They have been pros, and if you thought (and you did apparently from what I’ve read) that they were going to struggle with their emotions, you got it wrong.

Anyway… hope you guys enjoy some humble pie. And hope when the series is over you have some crow to go with it.

It’s going to be a tough series for both sides, but hopefully the Canucks earned a bit of respect in game 1. they deserve it.

Honestly

everyone here has given mad respect to the Canucks and their players. More often than not, SCH does a fantastic job at saluting the other team in a humorous, respectful way. All of us here knew that the Canucks weren’t an easy team. Just because we pointed out spots we thought were weak and could possibly cause a break down of your team and thus make an easy series doesn’t mean we don’t respect you. It would be the same of you Canucks fans and bloggers breaking down the Hawks and saying that because of our goaltending tandem, we’ll lose this series, or because the Canucks have revenge on their mind from last year, that they’re going to come out fierce and never let go.
So please, save the gloating of us eating humble pie and the whining of not getting respect. We respected Nashville, we definitely respect you. See you at Game 2.

I almost forgot I can't afford the bleach that turns collars from blue to white...but I never liked the collar white anyways.

Kesler? Is that you?

But when it was suggested to him that Toews v. Kane seems likely to become a sidebar to every future international hockey tournament, he smiled and said: "I'd like us to win something together, too."

I'm glad you're enjoying your win tonight

by talking to the other nucks fans over at Nucks misconduct. oh wait, you’re not even a member of their blog. and your screenname shows lots of pride in your team.

And by the way, only 1 game is done. There’s still time for emotions and a near sweep. However, I think this will go 6 or 7, which is what most of the readers here thought before the series started. We know this is a dangerous team, and multiple people have said it on this blog. But honestly, who wants to talk about the skill of the other team when you can just laugh about the sack or douchebags that is the canucks. You can keep bitching about not getting respect here, but I personally won’t respect a team who whines and pulls hair to get out of a fight.

Guys…guys…I have never seen the guy.

I guess you have a troll or something.

A couple things I ahve read in the comments.

We are not all “sensitive”. What Canuck fans are is bi-polar. We know we have a great team to watch, but there have been so many different things that have happened over the years to pluck that away.

Consequently, you get people not in charge of their emotions. Waiting for the other skate to drop.

Most fans here know that its only one game. So do we at NM. ( where, FTR…I don’t remember seeing a whole lot of Canucks in 4-5 talk…a few…probably the same percentage that were predicting Hawks in 3 or 4! )

I love how HH gave a history lesson…I understand the d-bag comment, but don’t really agree with it…of course. Just a lot of players that go hard every shift.

BTW…If Q goes for all the energy guys, he might be making a mistake. The 4th line for the Canucks is all speed ( OK ..Ripper is a fucking lunatic, but he is OUR lunatic, and a pretty feared fighter…you need him around )…If the Hawks dress Eager/Fraser/another meanie as their 4th line…they better put their big boy skates on.

Because the 4th line as constituted will skate circles around them.

Monday can’t come soon enough.

""I felt last year our guys were ready to take that next step," Vigneault said. "We weren't able to get through Chicago. I feel we're even more ready now. Having gone through that experience, having learned from it. . . we're going to be better prepared to face the challenge ahead of us."

by vancitydan on May 2, 2010 11:24 AM CDT up reply actions

How do you counteract speed? With physicality of course. With Eager and Burish (Burr is no slouch when it comes to speed) the ’Hawks can force that line into a down-low cycle game and bring a nasty edge of physicality. The team with largest amount of will and aggression will come out victorious in the end.

Head-to-head I like Burish and Eager over Grabner and Rypien. Just my perspective.

Well…you would!

I thought Hansen had an awesome game too.

And really, if the Hawks dress the Hansen Bros. AV will probably come back with some of his.

Ripper cancels out Eager, and Burish is no where near as fast as Grabner…he is one of the fastest in the league!

Grabner has wheels (so does Jordan Schroeder) but I do like Adam Burish’s physical edge over Grabner. Maybe get into the rookie’s head a little knowing that with every move he’ll have #37 hitting him at every turn.

Since I brought up Schroeder what’s going on with Hodgson? Has he fully recovered {back injury} or are the ’Nucks organization shutting him down until September to get ready for training camp?

2010 PLAYOFFS: ROUND 2
Can D2K be the silencer of the Sedins?

by hawks61 on May 2, 2010 11:50 AM CDT up reply actions

The latter. He was better, and then got tomahawked into the boards in an OHL playoff game. He showed up in Vancity and said his back still hurt. They kept him out of Manitoba’s playoffs as a result. So…yeah…we’ll see him in Sept.

Schroeder was great in the playoffs for the AHL team. Both 1st rounders can and maybe should make the team next year. ( those EL deals are Capbusters! )

Do you really think Burish is the be all and end all? If a fringes guy starts running around, he will probably draw the ref’s attention. PP’s can drain momentum as much as a big hit builds it. That “fine line” and all that.

I noticed last night the Canuck team as a whole did a pretty good job of skating away from those scrums. They know they got distracted last year…this year they ahve all vowed to remember that.

Two words:

OK, that was a joke. This isn’t Gretzky’s line, this is the Nucks 4th line and Eager and Burish both have decent speed and can play physical. Right? RIGHT?

I think energy is what was missing. I’d take 37 back. If Buff is a fwd, give him a chance to succeed on the top line. Sharp is a center now leave him there with hossa. The fact that goaltending isn’t their strong point is exactly why Niemi should stay put. I know the Hawks can score 6. 9 is tough.

Literally the only difference between the Canucks and Hawks offense this year was in Empty Net goals. Otherwise the Hawks actually scored more.

The difference between these two teams has been on the defensive side where the Hawks were tied for 5th and the Canucks were 12th. When the Hawks remember to actually play defense they are a tough team to beat.

Also, some dude at the BL tried picking a fight with me as I was closing my tab last night, but I couldn’t figure out why. He’s lucky I’m more of an agitator than a fighter, because picking a fight with a Hawks fan after a game like that is really fucking stupid.

Lacklustre

As Sam mentioned, this game was a tale of two goals, the one late in the first and then again early in the second, basically 40 seconds apart. Stole our confidence like I haven’t seen before.

These two teams are so even that I think the balance will come down to who thinks they deserve it the most, who develops the cockiest attitude early enough to have it last. That took a serious blow last night. Last year our team had a tangible swagger, and I think Nashville knocked a bit of that out of us this year (even though Calgary took us 6 last year, think of how different a tone that series was than Nashville).

A win tomorrow will go a long way toward getting the swagger back, but every single line needs to play like they’re human pipe bombs. I’m definitely projecting my own thoughts, but it feels like they’re trying to find their game while they’re out on the ice, they’re not just letting loose and relying on a winning instinct.

I want a team meeting today with Madden at the helm, one minute long: Do this or we fucking lose you fuckwads. Do it. Don’t fucking think, do it.

Can D2K be the silencer of the Sedins?

by hawks61 on May 2, 2010 11:18 AM CDT up reply actions

Hossa

It pissed me off when people were raggin’ on Hossa in Round 1 because he wasn’t lighting up the score sheet. Anyone who watched that series closely knows that he was our best player in at least 4 of those games, he just wasn’t getting rewarded.

Last night was different. It might have been his worst game as a Hawk. He looked timid and lost at times. How many times did he put a play offsides? I counted at least three. Did he do that three times all year? His pinch on Vancouver’s 5th goal was Kopecky-esque, he bit on a deke and fucking fell down.

You can’t put the loss on one player, obviously, and I’m not doing that. But Hossa needs to put this game behind him and play like the fucking cyborg we all know and love.

by HungryHungryPanda on May 2, 2010 9:48 AM CDT reply actions

Funny, I didn’t have him isolated last night as worse than anyone else. But his penalty directly after the third goal robbed us of even the chance to respond. In retrospect I doubt we would have … but the wind left us from that goal and penalty forward.

by ChicoMaki on May 2, 2010 9:55 AM CDT up reply actions

Hossa at his worst

Is still a dangerous player. I thought Kane actually had a strong game and Toews was busting ass like usual. The 2nd line in general just looked lost out there. Kopecky needs to get off that line.

by HungryHungryPanda on May 2, 2010 10:00 AM CDT up reply actions

Ha, I disagree a little with Kopecky, too. I mean, I’m not going to spend too much breath defending him, but he’s one of the few guys who’s been consistently showing his stones on shift to shift. He doesn’t have a lot of finish, and that’s far from ideal for a top-6, but he doesn’t take a shift off. Sounds like I’m trying too hard to dig for positives …

www.mjt.org

by ChicoMaki on May 2, 2010 10:11 AM CDT up reply actions

I don't know where to put Kopecky, but he deserves some minutes

Again, this goes to back to something I’ve stated before, he just doesn’t fit on this team. Not a 4th line guy, but not talented enough for our 2nd line – although that is his skill set and he was a top scorer in the minors.

Kopecky provided some of our best net presence yesterday. He laid a couple of nice hits in the corner and I even saw him dive or fall for a couple of pucks during the game. The effort was there and I didn’t see him getting burned on D.

I know you were in no way bashing Kop, just his place on the 2nd line and I somewhat agree with you, so this isn’t directed at all towards you HHP. Defending Kop for me is somewhat like defending Huet before he blew a gasket. People seem to throw him under the bus because he’s an easy target. But he’s been one of our top forwards since the Olympics. That’s great for him, but unfortunate for the team.

Where are guys like Ladd, Buff, Brouwer, Madden, Verstig, and Bolland? Really, where the fuck are these guys? If people want to start pointing fingers, here are some prime candidates.

Well, folks, I want to thank you for being here for the recording of my live comedy album. Funny material and laughter will be dubbed in later.

Man, Verstig was out there last night?

That might explain a few things.

Time for some thrillin' heroics!

by shinkicker on May 2, 2010 2:21 PM CDT up reply actions

I didn't take any offense to anything you or Chico said

In fact, BigC and I were trying to convince Trixie last night that Kopecky is actually a pretty talented player. I think you’re right, he just isn’t a natural fit on this team.

Your laundry list of guys that need to show up is pretty spot-on as well. I’m a huge fan of Ladd, but where’s the scoring touch he showed in March? Versteeg is just a confounding player, but he’s still so young (and stupid).

Obviously this has been stated over and over, but David Bolland is really struggling. I don’t know where he fits right now. He wasn’t effective on the 2nd line and he’s been ineffective on the 3rd line as well. I would like Madden-Ladd-Versteeg back on the third line together, but then where does that put Bolland?

I don’t have the answer, except maybe the press box…

by HungryHungryPanda on May 2, 2010 2:24 PM CDT up reply actions

Scratching Bolland

might get him to realise that he’s not been the player he was last year and might light a fire under his ass. He hasn’t been scratched since returning from surgery, has he?

Question

Given that Sharp works very well as Hossa’s centre, and Kane & Sharp play really well together, why haven’t I seen anyone suggest Hossa-Sharp-Kane?

I know it doesn’t leave Toews with many options, but the Hammer Of The Gods line didn’t leave Kane with many options either.

I think the problem with Bolland

is that he literally ISN’T the player he was last year. I mentioned a month ago that the Hawks might consider trading Bolland this summer if possible. It is rare that a player ever fully recovers from back surgery. It is typically a career/lifelong injury.

If this is the case, I feel for the guy, but I also felt bad for Old Yeller when he died.

I've been trying not to admit this, but it's dead-on

The Hawks have nothing this year to compare with the consistency provided by Ladd-Bolland-JHC last year.

Bolland ain’t the same, but the knock on effects of not having one steady line make this team a bit less of the sum of their parts than last year.

Honestly, I don't think so

He stopped quite a few shots, but he left so many juicy rebounds. I can’t believe the Hawks couldn’t capitalize on any of them. If Lu keeps playing like that and our players get their heads out of their asses and play, we have the edge.

by rsncrntz on May 2, 2010 1:37 PM CDT up reply actions

he made some key saves

but so did Niemi. Gotta give credit to the Nucks defense though, they did a better job of clearing the rebounds than our guys. I’m generally disappointed with the inability of the team to bail out Niemi when he has an off game.

by cdz3210 on May 2, 2010 1:42 PM CDT up reply actions

I think they learned pretty well in Round 1

But that was against the super-disciplined Nashville Predators. I think having to relearn clearing the slot and other dangerous areas when Niemi gives up those inevitable juicy rebounds (which he does — it’s a part of his athleticism-first, positioning-second game) is going to have to happen with the more “open” Canuckleheads.

Has anyone else thought that switching styles from the Preds to Nucks is a way bigger adjustment than going from Kings to Hawks?

by VerStig on May 2, 2010 4:31 PM CDT up reply actions

The difference in opponents' playing styles

from round one to round two has been much more significant this season than last. Let’s hope this was just an extreme case of the game-one jitters, and Coach Q can make some adjustments for tomorrow.

by gmh on May 2, 2010 4:39 PM CDT up reply actions

speaking of which

since I am statistically-lazy, I was wondering if you or any of the other more stat-minded people have ever looked into the Hawks records after rests of at least 3 days. I commented on this at BL, but it seems that the Hawks always start slowly whenever they have long-ish rest periods (specifically this & last year’s team). I don’t know if it’s Game1 jitters or loss of momentum/focus or whatever.

I know people were commenting how they haven’t won a Game1 since ’96 or something like that, but I feel like this is true during the regular season as well, although I have nothing to back up that hypothesis.

by ahnfire on May 2, 2010 11:36 PM CDT up reply actions

maybe a couple rebounds

The Hawks had a lot of PP time though, and sometimes goalies deserve credit for steering rebounds into open ice. Plus, Lu smothered a few key plays (e.g. Soupy redirect.)

If the Hawks bust through with even one goal there, the whole game is different.

Anyway, Kaner had a better view than I did.

VAN scored their 2nd goal with only seconds left. It was not bad, they had allot of pressure and good chances on LU, just did not nail them. The 2nd period well…um…………….sure…………..Hey at least the Hawks got onto the ice, and skated around. The 3rd was not too shabby either +1 GD.

But the overall effort last night was very underwhelming. But I’m not nearly as concerned after last night as I was in Game vs NSH. This was a funk game, as you pointed out, hopefully night like the string they put together in March.

Questions for you guys...

First question: Have the Hawks ever won a game this entire year when they have gotten 17 or more shots in the first period? It seems like the best way to beat the Hawks is to let them get into a “feeding frenzy” on offense and beat them on the counterattack.

Second question: More a statement actually, Madden has gotten old and Bolland’s back is a real issue. This team doesn’t have the shutdown line that was expected. Does Q go back to playing Towes and Hossa against the other teams first line?

Third question: Why would people be talking about Huet in goal. The Hawks have followed up these kinds of games with solid efforts in the next. The truth is when Niemi pulls a shutout in a game is when you should talk about putting in Huet. Niemi has followed up shutouts with bad games. He’s followed up bad games with good games…

by DaleHalas on May 2, 2010 10:15 AM CDT reply actions

I'm glad Huet got at least a period in

He didn’t look bad, made at least one big save. We might need him again going forward so it’s good he got at least some confidence back.

About Niemi, he pulled together a string of mostly solid games at the end of the regular season. I wouldn’t go so far as to say that he is bad after every shutout (unless that was sarcasm that I missed). Hopefully he’ll kick ass tomorrow.

by hawkswin!hawkswin! on May 2, 2010 10:21 AM CDT up reply actions

If anything else that was the biggest positive of last nights game – Huet getting back into rythym and getting some playing time. Nobody really knew what to expect out of Cristo once Q threw him to the wolves in the 3rd period, but to his credit he battled and made some several key stops (for his confidence anyways).

If anything wasn’t it nice to see a netminder in goal that can actually play the puck and move it up the ice?

3rd Question Reply:

You make a good point on the good/bad performances. I’d start Niemi on Monday and would only consider giving Huet a start if Niemi played like he did last night. If a switch in goalies is needed I hope it’s done on the road. I don’t think Huet starting his first game at the UC would be that great for him.

Bolland has lost it completly. This team needs a second line center. Hossa has absolutly nobody to set him up.

Admittedly, I am a Sopel-supporter, (Sopelite?) but I saw him beat nucks to the puck more than a few times last night:
First game of the second round, not completely deep:
His skating style (did I just say that was a style?) is deceptive, and makes him look slower:
Bolland was no more lost than 50% of the team looked last night:
And last, but probably least, since when does Super-Panda need someone to set him up? Huet could bounce a puck off of a dead Dick and Hossa could make it look good.

I was going over some of the reasons why we lost…and I struggled to find anything good, wanna know what I came up with? “Kopecky hit a few guys in the defensive zone and managed to stay on his feet” that right there gives you an idea how bad that game was

anybody watching the Pens/Habs game?

because they had a little montage of Crosby with some song with “hero” in the title playing in the background. I wish I was lying.

To be fair, Crosby DID get 1st star in 4 of the 5 wins the Pens have had so far, so I guess it’s true. Still, the montage came after McGuire interviewed Crosby, so. Hilarity.

I think everyone should remember that this is the SC playoffs, not the Superbowl.

A series is 7 games. I predicted that if the Canucks won, it would be in 7 games by a slim margin. As Im a Canucks fan Im glad that my team won game 1 so they’ve knocked down 1 of 4 needed, but Chicago is still a very dangerous team and a series can shift VERY quickly. Enough about this respect stuff, we’re fans of opposing teams in the SC WCSF. Things will be said, outrageous predictions will be made, respect will be shown or not shown, and hockey will be played. Everyone just relax, don’t troll (unless you’re trolling the Flames blog Matchsticks and Gasoline or the Leafs blog Pension Plan Puppets, we should all head over there and belittle them just for the lulz). Lets all just enjoy the playoff hockey. Not telling you what to do in your own house, just speaking as a reasonable/non-delusional/non-easily offended Canucks fan.

Two things...

…this club clearly has a tendancy to make things diffiicult on itself, and that goes back to last years post season run as well. Consistency and mental lapses have not been the Hawks strong suit, and it is rearing it’s ugly head again.

Secondly, home ice in the playoffs really doesn’t mean a whole hell of a lot. In fact, I would argue home ice can work against a team as much as help them. In the playoffs, road teams tend to be more focused on making the simple plays and this usually pays off in the playoffs.

Lastly, I agree it’s only one game and if the Hawks play like they are capable, they have a great shot at winning the series.

Back to the Hawks for a moment...

Why do they continue to do this in the playoffs? “This” being take periods off.

First, it’s the playoffs—every team ups the intensity for the whole game. How come the Hawks don’t?

Second, you’ve got a team that has said publicly that they want you—they want revenge. How can you not be up for that?

Third, the Nucks are the one team that the Hawks “struggled” against this season. Yes, we split the season series, but it’s clear to most (even Conroyd said it in a game) that the Nucks give the Hawks the most trouble. How can you not be ready for this team?

Finally, after “escaping” the first round (thank you, game 5 miracle finish) how can you let your intensity down for a moment, knowing how easily you could be on the golf course?

I just don’t get it. I’m not giving up, and I’m not “booing” the Hawks here, but how can they continue to disappear for stretches in the playoffs? Is it coaching? Some weird arrogance? I just don’t get it. Monday needs to get here already.

I fart in your general direction. Your mother was a hamster and your father smelt of elderberries.

by Preacher000 on May 2, 2010 4:48 PM CDT reply actions

Coaching

Utter inconsistency has to be blamed on coaching. Its been said here 10,000 times but shifting lines every time someone uses a water bottle might not be what these boys need. I have never been as down on the Hawks as I was after the game last night, and with time has come some much needed perspective, but another effort like that and I may be able to stop getting tremendously drunk until the regular season starts up next October. Thats the silver lining I guess. I did not, nor would I ever, boo the Hawks but I cant say the team I watched dominate the first part of this season was not 1,000 times more fun than this new version that gives unbalanced and sometimes completely lost efforts.

Sorry (truely sorry indeed) but I somewhat disagree

The Canucks bitchslapped the hell out of us last night. I didn’t think Niemi looked particularly bad (granted, not his best night either), but we got whacked in every square foot of the rink, each and all. If the Hawks do not totally amp up and get playing at a much more elevated level, this will be a short series.

The Hawks are certainly capable of better play, but haven’t really brought the ‘good play’ out much in the playoffs, and that is fatal if it continues any longer.

Confusion will be my epitaph.

Bolland/Brouwer

I can’t understand for the life of me how everyone in the world is all over Dave Bolland for his performance since he came back from injury, yet Troy Brouwer gets away with murder on this site. Finally the review of Game 1 today finally sorta called out Brouwer. I know he as apparently gone through a tough time with some problems with his father (of which caused him to miss the last four regular season game and of which we know nothing more about), but if you can’t perform you shouldn’t be in the lineup. This guy has done absolutely nothing for seven playoff games now. At least Bolland isn’t hurting us. Brouwer has been a no show and I’m tired of him. Put Burish in there and sit Brouwer if he isn’t mentally ready to play. This team has a chance to win the cup and these chances don’t come every year. Gotta have guys who want it and who will play hard right now. Passanger should sit in the press box. Just my two cents.

by Tazer on May 2, 2010 9:19 PM CDT reply actions

Have you been reading?

People have called out Brouwer. Bolland has just been more consistantly sucking.

and consistently sucking longer

Brouwer was playing solid right up until he had to go visit his father in the hospital, whereas Bolland has pretty much be stinking it up since he got back. He’s burned through more goodwill than Brouwer has.

Time for some thrillin' heroics!

by shinkicker on May 2, 2010 9:23 PM CDT up reply actions

Part of Brouwer's problem

is that Q hasn’t trusted him at all since he came back. He was almost immediately demoted to the 3rd/4th line, which can’t have done his confidence any good.

Admittedly, his horrible giveaway in game 1 probably has something to do with Q’s demotion of him, but Bolland on the PK is basically the reason the Preds scored 2 PP goals in game 3 (or 5, can’t remember which)

Also, Brouwer had a chance last night on a breakaway, but the puck rolled off his stick at the wrong moment. Not great, but better than anything Bolland’s done…

by Germware on May 2, 2010 9:25 PM CDT up reply actions

Bolland's not up to par, but

Not the reason you stated:

but Bolland on the PK is basically the reason the Preds scored 2 PP goals in game 3 (or 5, can’t remember which)

Against the Preds the Hawks gave up only 1 power play goal in 27 chances. Not quite a knock on the PK, and Bolland’s part of the units that go out there killing penalties every night. The mental lapses have mostly come at even strength.

But when it was suggested to him that Toews v. Kane seems likely to become a sidebar to every future international hockey tournament, he smiled and said: "I'd like us to win something together, too."

Bolland/Brouwer

I meant moreso the people who write this site. Not the comments. I don’t have time to read every fucking comment, dude. Brouwer sucks and that should be talked about more. Bolland came back way too soon from back surgery. I couldn’t believe how fast he came back. He should have been held out until after the Olympic break and maybe he would be better now. As for Brouwer, not everyone can play on the first and second line. Gotta produce wherevery you play. Maybe the coaches were annoyed he missed so many games at the end of the season? I don’t know. I just think people should get off of Bolland’s back a little bit.

Thoughts from Last Night

I was the game last night…I would like a refund! Can someone please tell me why Dave Bolland is on the ice so much, it seemed like he was out there every other shift. I have not looked at his TOI because I do not want to look at the stats from last nights game and re-live any part of that nightmare. He has contributed nothing, is slow to the puck, won’t put a body on anyone, and Q is in love with him! Why he on the ice on every power play and every penalty kill? Does he have pictures of Q blowing someone?

Niemi stunk last night. Huet looked pretty good and was much better at controlling where the puck went as he made saves directing them to the corners, not the fucking slot right into an oncoming Canuck…

Troy Brouwer, where are you?

Seabrook looks like he is skating in quicksand. Keith’s decision-making is slow and horrible allowing forecheckers to get on him and forcing him to make bad passes and turnovers.

Q line shuffling is why he has never won a cup. Maddening. Put lines together and leave it be.

In my opinion, we need some more physical play. Turn Frazier and Eager loose.

Yeah

He should just send out different line combinations each shift unless that line scores a goal, then they can stay together. No goal, then change it. That creates a lot of good chemistry..Why keep and keith and seabrook together ? should mix up the D also whyile he is at it.

by Esquire02 on May 2, 2010 9:49 PM CDT up reply actions

Just because your OPINION is different from mine, doesn’t mean you have to attack me every time I put a post up. SInce no one here has ever coached in the NHL , let alone won a cup, including you, you are no more qualified to challenge my opinion as I am to write it, so shut the fuck up…btw, I don’t see that you disagreed with anything I wrote except the line changing issue, and if you think constant shifting of lines is a positive, then I do question question your hockey acumen. There is no doubt that shuffling lines is needed at times, but not every other fucking shift every fucking game.

by Esquire02 on May 2, 2010 10:11 PM CDT up reply actions

if somehow me suggesting that I’m sick of people stating “Q has never won the cup” hurts your sensitive ego, don’t post here. I give a lot of people shit and only you find it warranted to take everything personally and then attack me and the thread, just like you did to Katherine last time you showed your face here.

If you can’t handle counter-opinion, don’t spew your whiny shit all over this thread.

And to add to that, the whole “Niemi sucked” comment rings awfully hallow after you showed up here to basically tell us “I told you so” last time.

Well, folks, I want to thank you for being here for the recording of my live comedy album. Funny material and laughter will be dubbed in later.

by ChicagoNativeSon on May 2, 2010 10:23 PM CDT up reply actions

Two very important reasons...

…a guy like Scotty Bowman used to change his lines (not only from game to game, but from shift to shift):

1. It keeps your own players mentaly sharp, because they have to be more aware of their positioning
2. The opposing coach has a lot more difficult time matching up a certain line (or player) against yours, and you are in a better position to get the matchup you are looking for

I do agree there is some value in promoting chemistry by keeping guys together, but there is also value in what I mention above.

I read the last 300 comments on their GDT last night after the game

I’m not exaggerating when I say that about 295 of those comments were complaining about the officiating and the league conspiracy that wants the Sharks to win cup. The Sharks??? And not a single comment saying anything along the lines of “we lost, man up.” I was embarrassed for them…

They weren't the only one's thinking the refs sucked
Dishonorable Mention: The officiating in the Detroit/San Jose game was atrocious at times, and for both sides. The Sharks had 10 power plays, the Wings had four. Diving was unfortunately prevalent

This was also from puck daddy. Trust me I’m not sticking up for the tin foil hat brigade here. There was a huge discrepancy in the amount of power plays, but if the Scum did the infractions they deserved to earn their shame in the box.

The officiating was bad

and a few Sharks fans came over to admit it, but they also pointed out it was bad both ways. As expected, most Wingers didn’t feel the same. They wanted the “make up calls” because that would have made the officiating better. /ugh

by ChicagoNativeSon on May 3, 2010 1:26 PM CDT up reply actions

I have heard non-aligned people say the officiating was poor, but the Sharks were smart enough to adjust

While the Wings just kept walking right into the buzzsaw blade while it was spinning.

Wings were stupid, Sharks were smart, smart team wins game.

If the Wings fans were focused on the actual bad calls, I’d give them a modicum of credit, but they’re even bleating on the slash called where the Cleary broke Blake’s stick (without hitting Blake himself). Hello? That is slashing too (it’s right there in the rule book). The whinny Wings fans are not any smarter than their team played.

Confusion will be my epitaph.

I saw an album review for a white rapper (Brother Ali’s “Us”, if you’re interested), who, on this album, did a song about slavery and how awful it was. The reviewer questioned what the rapper had to do with slavery, and suggested the rapper was “trying to be black”.

I’m not American, so I don’t know how taboo this is, but no rapper currently performing songs about slavery has been a slave. Why the hell can’t a white guy do a song about slavery?

Hendry was bad and Buff (believe it or not) IMO actually gives Q more options on D. He didn’t have much TOI at forward, so put him on D and get in him in front of Lu on the PP.

This is my problem with Buff on D

Nashville was slower and not as talented as Vancouver, and he had trouble. How will he handle getting caught on the ice with the Sedins? Matchups or not, you just know our luck would allow that to happen.

by Katherine215 on May 2, 2010 10:28 PM CDT up reply actions

what about Hendry though?

He got caught flatfooted and out of position in his limited time. I’m not saying that Buff is better by any stretch of the imagination, but all things being equal, it opens up a spot to bring in Eager or Burish to hopefully spark something and Buff can still play on the PP.

Hopefully that clears up the rationale. I didn’t explain it well the first time, since I was being distracted by a troll who kept snapping his little fingers in my face.

I'd rather Burish over Eager

Burish is slightly smarter and more likely to do a better job at agitating than just smashing people. imo.

by Katherine215 on May 2, 2010 10:37 PM CDT up reply actions

Good point on Hendry

I’m still on the fence about Buff, though.

by Katherine215 on May 2, 2010 10:33 PM CDT up reply actions

So am I

but I think “freeing up” another forward so that you can try to wake up the 2nd, 3rd and 4th lines is more important than the effect of one guy who will probably have very limited time on the ice on D and still be able to get his ass in front of Luongo on the PP.

Let’s just say I understand the decision. Often times it just comes down to the question, “What other option do we have?”

The boys had better shape up for game 2....

…or they are fucked. I thought they played a pretty decent 13 ½ minutes of the 1st period, then shit the bed in the last 20 seconds of the 1st and the first 30 seconds of the 2nd and found themselves down 3 – 0. After that I had a sick feeling every time the Canucks entered our zone they were gonna score and I think the Hawks players felt the same way. Nothing made me sicker than the fucking announcers on Vs. though. They spoke of the Canucks as if they were dismantling the Hawks with surgical precision never before displayed in the sport. Now let me be clear, the Canucks played well, but nothing they did except for some really nice tic-tac-toe passing plays that did not even result in a goal was spectacular. The Hawks just finger fucked themselves so well the Canucks could not help but look good. Perhaps the announcers thought they were sparing the Hawks total humiliation by extolling Vancouver with such God-like praise so as to inform casual and or brain dead fans that on this night there was simply nothing the Hawks could have done differently.

Well I got a few suggestions for our Hawks…stop acting so damned entitled. Confidence is one thing, but this is the NHL playoffs, not the fucking G-bracket at the Olympic preliminaries. Everyone wondered what would happen if the Hawks shit the bed against any team not as offensively impaired as Nashville, well…there’s your answer. And here’s a novel idea…try hitting somebody BEFORE you are down 3 or 4 fucking goals!!!! And finally, stop making the power play look like a game of keep away or a passing clinic; the other team has one less guy on the ice then you do…locate the extra guy wearing the same jersey as you and let him shoot the puck at least in the direction of the wine sipping faggot in the mask. This is the SAME PK unit that made the Kings look like they invented the fucking power play for fucks sake.

And Queneville had better un-fuck his line combos or he will soon add this Hawks team to the list of talented teams he could not coach to the Stanley Cup Finals.

The less a man makes declarative statements, the less apt he is to look foolish in retrospect.

The Hawks makeup of the team.

The Hawks have 4 legitimate top 6 forwards on this team.

The Hawks have 5 tweener’s in Kopecky, Versteeg, Buf, Brouwer and (because of his injury) Bolland. These are guys that are better than a traditional checking line player but aren’t what you would call top 6 players.

With a team made up that way, off course you are going to see a lot of line combination’s. People are talking about the Hawks as a favorite. IMO, Coach Q has a lot to do with “hiding” the Hawks flaws and making them a contender. Of course your mileage may vary…

Fair enough...

All very good points. As for the implication that he will never win a cup…I think that is taking my statement a bit farther than I intended it to go. I believe if he would not shuffle lines so much, he has the coaching ability to win a cup. My statement was not intended to be extrapolated that far, but I understand your logic there. I also agree that he is not the one shitting the bed. I made a post a month or so ago about that very issue putting the blame squarely on the players and exonerating Q when some people were blaming him for failing to motivate the players, which IMO, is not a primary job of Q.

Anyway, I realize it is difficult to win championships in any sport, especially in hockey, which is evidenced by the number of low seeds knocking off high seeds every year and much more frequently than in any sport. I am a Hawks fan to the core and have been my entire life. It is why I spend the money on tix, including Sat’s game (if you want to call it that) and have watched every game but two this year either live or on tv. I was extremely pissed when I left the UC Sat that the team came out and played like that after the energy in that place leading up through the first puck drop. It was inexcusable and I vented here on those players that I felt had the biggest hands in it.

It is 3 hours to game time and I certainly hope each and every player has a fire lit under his ass tonight. I apologize to you and everyone for my snide remarks and pissy attitude at times but it is difficult not get in that mode when every time I post something I get attacked, or what at least what I perceive as being attacked.

Its all good as far as I am concerned, I don’t harbor grudges (don’t laugh) and I enjoy reading everyone’s posts on here during and after games although I don’t post a lot during games because it gets distracting and I would rather watch.

I also love reading the Committed Indian. I can’t think of a better way to spend $3 when i go to the games and the one from Sat night was top notch. I especially liked the back page of “Hawks record when…” so kudos to the guys that put it together.

Good day all…GO Hawks.

No, you just stay on the sidelines and stoke the flames

It wasn’t supporting Esquire IMO, it was an asshole-ish comment when taken in context to other jabs you’ve thrown my way. I really didn’t say anything to provoke Esquire’s outburst. And the last time we got into it, he completely misinterpreted a comment I made about another poster being “clairvoyant” as pertaining to him.

You see, I don’t dislike Esquire – at all. I enjoy needling him like I would any regular for past and present comments. Apparently he was still sensitive to what had transpired before, but I wasn’t even in the group that attacked him his first days on the site. He does seem to step his foot in it sometimes.
