Series Preview - A Look at the Flyers Goalies

If you thought the Hawks had some goalie problems this season, you probably weren't paying attention to the Flyers.  5 different guys have spent time between the pipes for the Flyers this season.  Sure, two of them only played in a single game but only Brian Boucher played in more than 30 games... and now he's hurt and may not see any time out of the press box.  The Flyers have jumped behind an unproven goalie of their own who so far has come up huge..

After the jump we'll take a look at the net-minders in the first of our series previews.

Star-divide

Michael Leighton

You may hear a little bit about the fact that Michael Leighton was drafted originally by the Hawks... especially since the Hawks have Patrick Sharp, originally drafted by the Flyers.  it's an interesting tidbit, but it really doesn't matter except for a nice story.  Leighton was traded from the Hawks for the beloved Milan Bartovic... and I'm sure we all love and remember good ol' Barto.  Remember how great he played on Slovakia's 2007 Men's Inline hockey team?  Anyone?

Leighton certainly has played well since taking over for an injured Brian Boucher.  In 8 games these playoffs he's got an .948 SV% and a 1.45 GAA.  Of course the Flyers defense has been playing phenomenally in front of him.  And even Flyers fans will (maybe) admit that he hasn't been tested too much in his past 7 games.  The Habs (Average height 5'6") don't really have players like Dustin Byfuglien or others who crash the net and stay in front of the crease.  Of course, anyone who goes in front of the crease obviously has to deal with Chris Pronger, but that's a matter for the defense preview. The Habs also only managed over 30 shots only once in the 5 games... and that'd be the game they won 5 to 1.

Since Leighton has been so good in this post-season, it's easy to forget how fairly mediocre he's been for most of his career.  He's played 103 games in the NHL prior to these playoffs and has a .902 SV% and 2.94 GAA.  He's never been more than a journeyman who suddenly is thriving in a starting position at the best of times.  The Habs looked utterly exhausted in their series against Philly and even at their best don't present the threat that the Hawks throw at you.  It will be quite interesting to see if Leighton can keep up his outstanding streak against a strong offensive team.  The book on Leighton is getting him moving side to side.  If the knock on Niemi is that he hasn't been tested so far, consider that double for Leighton.  He's playing out of his head at the moment and it'll be trouble if that continues but I'm not entirely convinced he can keep it up.

Brian Boucher

#33 / Goalie / Philadelphia Flyers

GP MIN W L EGA GA GAA SA SV SV% SO
2009 - Brian Boucher 33 1742 9 18 80 2.76 796 716 .899 1

Boucher is another journeyman goalie who has found a home in Philadelphia this year.  He's played in the NHL for 6 different teams since 1999 (including 15 games for your Chicago Blackhawks!).  He's got a career .900 SV% and 2.72 GAA.  He gained the starting role going into the playoffs when Leighton was hurt and lead the Flyers for the first 10 games.  He played well with a .915 SV% and 2.33 GAA... good but not outstanding. Once again, he's been helped by an outstanding Flyers defense.

Boucher went down against Boston though with a sprain in both MCLs (ouch) and has only recently begun skating again.  It's uncertain if he'll return to even be the backup against Chicago.  If he is needed, it will be a major question mark for the Flyers.  Depending on him to be quick enough to play against the Hawks could be a problem.  Although if he's brought in.. it likely means the Hawks are already ahead.  Boucher can still steal a game from time to time if needed though.

Johan Backlund

#30 / Goalie / Philadelphia Flyers

GP MIN W L EGA GA GAA SA SV SV% SO
2009 - Johan Backlund 1 40 0 1 2 3.00 24 22 .917 0

If the Flyers don't get Boucher back.. expect this guy on the bench.  And really... your guess is as good as mine.  Backlund played in one regular season game for only 40 minutes.  He let in two goals and had a SV% of .917.  He has played close to 90 seconds in the playoffs though, so he's not completely untested in the post-season.  He didn't let in a goal but seeing as how he didn't face a shot.. that's a damn good thing.

I won't even bother with Ray Emery..

Solid breakdown

I have to agree on Leighton’s untestedness, but as someone pointed out in another thread (and sorry for repeating, but it is kind of funny to read it), Sam did have this to say after that game back in March:

I don’t know if Michael Leighton can keep up this standard, but if he can the Flyers are an intriguing team to watch. They’re one of two teams in the East that can skate with the Caps, and they can go the other way too if they need to. No one will fancy catching them in the playoffs.
So, has he kept this up? And can he keep doing so? Lest we take his inevitable regression to his mean for granted (just let it happen early in this series, to save our hearts and livers).

by VerStig on May 26, 2010 10:04 PM CDT reply actions

That question

is a double edged sword. It depends on who you talk to. We weren’t playing great at the time, so take that into account. They haven’t played an offense of our caliber. Let’s just wait and see what happens in game 1, and then I’ll give you a response.

by Coz_Bulls_Fan on May 26, 2010 10:19 PM CDT up reply actions

Offense of Caliber

I keep hearing everyone saying the Flyers haven’t played an offense of the Hawks caliber, or even a decent offensive team. You are correct with saying that for NJ and BOS, but MON took out the Caps and Pitt (two of the most offensive teams in the east), and most of those games were very high scoring. Now, I’m not saying Mon compares even in the slightest bit to Chicago, you guys are about 15 times better, but I’m just saying don’t forget that Mon “could” score a lot of goals, we just shut them down (3 shutouts in 5 games). Camalleri was completely shut down, 1 goal in 5 games after he was leading the NHL in goals scored. It’s going to be a great series and I think it comes down to more of a "who’s defense is better in front of their “untested goalies”", although Niemi has been tested a lot more than Leighton.

I'm not saying the Flyers would be unable to shut Chicago's offense down

but you shut Cammalleri down. The Flyers’ ability to shut an offensive team down remains to be seen— the Habs were running on Cammalleri for, well, everything. Compare this breakdown of goals/points scored for the Habs: http://canadiens.nhl.com/club/stats.htm?gameType=3&season=20092010 versus this: http://blackhawks.nhl.com/club/stats.htm?gameType=3&season=20092010

But when it was suggested to him that Toews v. Kane seems likely to become a sidebar to every future international hockey tournament, he smiled and said: "I'd like us to win something together, too."

That’s in three fewer games, as well … a Montreal team that not only found a way to win 9, but also a way to lose 10.

I Completely Understand

and as I said, the Chicago offense is about 15 times better. The only point I am trying to make is that we did play a “semi-good” offensive team in Montreal, and made a “hot” goalie look like swiss cheese. Again, I am not comparing Montreal to Chicago as you’re team is leaps and bounds better and it is going to be extremely tough for us to compete, I just was trying to push away the whole “Flyers have played against zero offensive teams.” That’s like Flyers fans trying to run with a “Hawks have played against zero defensive teams” because honestly, which team did you play that has a defense as good as yours or ours? But I’m not going to say that because it’s not completely accurate.

From a depth perspective

It’s not like the ’Hawks have played a team that could roll four lines since we played Nashville. And Philly certainly has a better reputation for offensive prowess than they did.

The same goes the other way around, I would think. I find it funny how people are making a lot of arguments that really just make this look more like a look in the mirror.

The preds weren't half bad on D

And as we’ve said elsewhere, playing against them really made the hawks buckle down and they learned a lot from that series.

Hopefully they haven’t forgotten that in the last 6 weeks

the Preds fall under the radar a lot

b/c they play in Nashville. But I’m as scared of their D as I am of Philly’s. The Preds just needed more help on offense.

And i get what you’re saying about MTL, but comparing Camalleri to the Hawks top 3 lines is unfair, and not even a close comparison. I think it’s the depth of the offensive options (allowed to play offense b/c they’re back by good d-men) that people keep referring to with the Hawks, as compared to the less deep offenses or offenses with no D that the Flyers have seen thus far.

by puppetmasterp on May 27, 2010 12:31 PM CDT up reply actions

I think the whole series will come down to pressure.

That is, if the Hawks pressure the puck all over the ice the way they did in game 2 against the Sharks, I expect Leighton will see a LOT of shots coming his way. If the Hawks sit back or let the Flyers clog up the attack, then it will come down to who can score some ugly goals.

Either way, I think the Hawks dictate this series. Our top lines putting on a puck possession show or our checking lines banging in some goals—the Hawks have shown an ability to win in whatever way the other team is playing. If we come out flying, I think we win going away. If we come out NOT flying, then it’s up in the air. Leighton’s shutouts aren’t scaring me much—but the defense in front of him is.

we have a few "dirty" players

Buff is definitely a big one because of what he’s done to Luongo. I think people still remember Burish cross-checking someone in last year’s playoffs. Eager’s considered dirty too, maybe, but for the ice time Bur & Eager get I don’t know. Actually, I think Bolland’s been playing a dirty game to get top lines off theirs.

And then there’s Kane, dirty off the ice and so therefore no one can afford to like him.

And Hossa, the mercenary.

I dunno if that's dirty.

Seems to me it’s part of the game. Annoying? Agravating? Infuriating? Yes Yes & Yes.

But dirty to me is cheap shots with a potential for real injury.

What Bolland is doing would certainly irk me as a fan. But as an opposing player it’s a test of your focus & discipline.

To be fair

I think you can equate the ankle-whacking with the wrist-whacking, at least on principle (yes, I know it’s probably easier to break a wrist than an ankle).

I don’t much care for it, but it seems to me whacking people with your stick to the point just below where you’d take a penalty for it is pretty common. So you’re right that on some level “it’s part of the game.”

What I don’t get, though, is that EVERY team in the NHL has these players. Every single one. No team can go deep without them.

If it’s dirtiness people are concerned about, Pronger was voted the dirtiest in the league by the players. Hartnell has a history of taking guys out. Carcillo and Briere dive. And Bolland does his thing, Eager and Burish instigate with their mouths, Buff doesn’t try especially hard to avoid contact with a goalie.

Hawks fans and Flyers fans are going to concentrate on the other team’s idiots … the thing I don’t get is how fans of other teams don’t see it both ways.

but I doubt you’ll see a line change with 5 seconds in the game either.

Maybe, just once, someone will call me 'Sir' without adding, 'You're making a scene."

I thought it was Kane

I could be wrong though – I refuse to watch it again to find out

I didn't bother watching it last night

I just remember wondering why someone would go off on a change with so little time left and the opposition has control of the puck.

Maybe, just once, someone will call me 'Sir' without adding, 'You're making a scene."

It was Kane

Found this quote in the archives from the post game write up. Versteeg actually had a good game that day.

Fucking yes Why the fuck did Kane skate off with 6 seconds to go, expecting his replacement to be able to get in defensive position in time and stop a 3 on 2? Jesus fucking Christ.

I went to a fight the other night and a hockey game broke out.

Player of the game, too

But Sam put the blame on Toews and Kane not skating back on the play… and that we shouldn’t have to worry about that later (like, now — I would agree).

I am considering joining Broad Street Hockey...

just so that I can reply to this fanpost

As you read through this fanpost you’ll notice not only rampant homerism, but more apples to oranges comparisons than I even have time to rip on. The dude just picks out players for each team that he thinks are similar, says he likes the flyers player(s) better in each instance, and uses this for his “analysis”. C’mon man!, at least matchup the lines and do a comparison that way (although I have no idea where he got that line configuration).

I understand that an opposing fan may not have the knowledge of the hawks that we do, but to dress this up as his analysis of the series is ridiculous.

Cliff Notes version

The Hawks and Flyers are pretty similar teams. We have some guys who are better than some of their guys. There may be some advantage for the Hawks in some cases, but because I totally made up the matchups, none of those matter. Also, according to some random numbers I cooked up, the hot Hawks will fizzle and ours will keep it up. As for the rest, call me a homer, I don’t know anything about their team, and I suck at spelling, but are they better? I think not. Flyers in 6.

by VerStig on May 27, 2010 9:19 AM CDT up reply actions

Well....he did get right

that in Las Vegas the Hawks are between 2-1 and 3-1 favorites to win the series. That is a HUGE spread. Of course he chose to ignore the obvious.

wanna rec this.. but I don’t think that the recently visited guidelines apply.

As it stands I say +59, because that’s the goal differential that they think is not as good as their +10.

Much like I think his version is not as concise as yours.

by Powrfwd37 on May 28, 2010 5:15 PM CDT up reply actions

I guess I shouldn't be as surprised as I am....

but when he’s writing this I can’t fathom how he doesn’t come to the realization that he somehow likes an 88 point regular season team over a 112 point regular season team in every possible comparison that he can come up with. I know that the Flyers are playing much better than they did in the regular season, but it’s a 24 point differential, that shit doesn’t happen by accident. I’m not trying to underestimate the flyers based on their regular season performance, I think they are going to be tough, but to cook up a formula in which you come to the conclusion that the Flyers have the advantage in all kinds of head to head matchups that aren’t even going to occur on the ice, silliness.

The whole “Tawes” Richards comparison……..did you watch the olympics!? Mike Richards probably sent Tazer a thank you card for carrying that line to a gold medal.

I hope he works for the Flyers

They could really use his intel in figuring out a way to stop a first line of Toews/Kane/Hossa.

But when it was suggested to him that Toews v. Kane seems likely to become a sidebar to every future international hockey tournament, he smiled and said: "I'd like us to win something together, too."

The Book

What does the Book say about Leighton’s stick, his glove, going top shelf, his puck handling, does he go down early, breakaways?

by Capone on May 27, 2010 9:29 AM CDT reply actions

My impression is that he's soft 5-hole.

But that’s based on the dreaded eye-test!

If the “book” bears that out, I think that’s good news for Hawks, as they have a lot of players with a tendency to take that shot.

ESPN called Toews-Kane-Byfuglien “the NHL’s hottest line”. Recent recipients of this kiss of death include Marleau-Thornton-Pylon & Sedin-Sedin-WhoCares. Suddenly I’m feeling rather queasy.

Someone, please, go ahead and call me an arrogant hockey fan but

I do believe that the fanbase for hockey is far more knowledgable than the fanbase for most other professional sports. I also agree with you, 334rules, that most fans of hockey are more knowledgeable than most sportswriters that cover hockey.

I’m saying that if you go to a game, and ask legitimately good questions about the sport amongst the crowd, you will get far better answers at an NHL game more often than you do at an NBA, MLB, or NFL game.

REAL questions – strategically based stuff, not “who led (insert home team) in rebounding last year?”

More like: “Based upon the way the game is progressing at this intermission, what adjustments should be made by the coaching staff before play begins again?”

Naturally, there are going to be the “SHOOOOOOT, HIT HIM! FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT!” members of the crowd, but I believe that the true fans are far more numerous than at other sporting events and will give you decent answers.

Everyone dies. It is the only true and lasting justice in life.

It's possible

Between Toews not having his best game in Game 4 and the almost-sure-to-come focus on Buff, I wouldn’t be surprised if they went a little cold (to the indirect benefit of Sharpie/Panda/T-Bone)

by VerStig on May 27, 2010 11:11 AM CDT up reply actions

For comparison purposes

I think this match up will be similar to the Hawks/Ducks games from last year. The Flyers play a similar game to the 08/09 Ducks. This year’s Flyers are a little stronger defensively than those Ducks and a little weaker offensively (when the Ducks had Selanne actually playing). The Hawks are somewhat better than last year due to experience, Hossa over Havlat and Madden having been with the team all year as compared to Rent-a-Pahlson (and Hendry over Walker?) Those were exciting games last year (although I do not remember us faring all that well). This should be a great series.

Don't believe the Leighton storyline

The North American hockey press has jumped on the “journeyman Michael Leighton” story and how he’s standing on his head, etc. etc. Don’t believe it.

Leighton has been a solid goaltender in almost every game this season. Nobody knows this because nobody watched the Flyers during the regular season (why would they, they were horrible).

He was given an opportunity because of the injuries. He seems to work well with the Flyers goalie coach. He’s just one of those late bloomers.

He has elevated his game for the playoffs in a way that you would expect for any goalie. He stole Game 2 against Montreal, but the bailed him out in Game 7 against Boston. He had an important 30 minutes in Game 6 of that series and he has played well, but when you recall the insane work Halak did in the first two rounds – where you’re just shaking your head over and again – there is no comparison.

If Leighton actually does start playing unconscious it could be the neutralizer the Flyers need to overcome the numerous minor advantages that Chicago has. He could win them the Cup. On the other hand his play could falter, as could Niemi’s. You never know with most goalies.

In addition to the lateral movement issue raised here, he also does something that I can’t make any sense of. When he drops to the ice a lot of times he has his pads more or less tucked under him rather than extended to the sides in a true butterfly. I would think if you make hard shots along the ice aimed at sticks in the slot you could take advantage of low re-directions.

regular season numbers looked kinda meh...

…not that different from Boucher except for W/L. I inferred that the Flyers played better in front of him- that is all.

Gentlemen! I have invented...this thing!

by cliffkoroll on May 27, 2010 5:57 PM CDT up reply actions

sorry i missed this one

Yes, i felt that they were more confident in front of Leighton, both in the regular season and against Boston. Leighton was fortunate in that he came in during Game 5, Boston’s worst of the series. He got 30 minutes of fairly easy work. He’s steadier than Boucher. He reminds me a little of Pete Peeters at his best, a little more mobile.
