Game 1 Post Game Thread - Hawks 6, Flyers 5 - Hawks Lead Series 1-0

Holy shit bros, we might actually win a Game 1 at home. Fuckin' gnarly.

I can't do a whole series like this and not have a grabber. Lot of positives, lot of negatives from this one, but the third period is certainly something to build off of. One of us to be by later tonight or tomorrow with more thoughts, because fuck knows that we need a little bit of a refractory period from this one to get clear headed enough to have some perspective.

Pesky

I like Kopecky playing again Sunday even if Ladd is ready. Ladd needs to play hungry and not have a sense of entitlement.

by Capone on May 30, 2010 10:00 AM CDT up reply actions

I like Kopecky playing again Sunday even if Ladd is ready.

Sorry but I think the Hawks really missed not having Ladd out there.

I’d rank the Hawks LW’s defensively in the order of Ladd, Brouwer, Kopeky, Eager and then Buf. If Ladd is available in a series like this one, I think he needs to play. Personally, I’d like to hide Buf on the 4rth line in even strength and let him make some noise on the power play. Assuming they get some other refs to call the game so they actually get some power plays…

by DaleHalas on May 30, 2010 11:22 AM CDT up reply actions

Not saying he's not better

but will he be aggressive? I wish we knew what the injury is.

by Capone on May 30, 2010 11:46 AM CDT up reply actions

Agreed

I kept posting last night that I wanted to see Eager for some shifts on the 1st line. Eager, because I didn’t want to see Brouwer or Kop moved off their lines because they both seemed to be clicking where they were at and Eager had some nice energy last night. He’s looked at bit more like the player he was supposed to be during these playoffs.

Well, folks, I want to thank you for being here for the recording of my live comedy album. Funny material and laughter will be dubbed in later.

I thought they said 5 of our guys have played before

but running down the lines it always seemed to be “drafted by us, drafted by us…” or “sorry, Hossa”. So Sopel is a question mark for me, too.

how does the posting of a game recap work here? i often see a short thread like this to begin, then it becomes something bigger once the full recap is completed. is it two separate posts completely, or just one modified one?

We usually do separate ones, I think

For big games like this, the comments sections get really bogged down. It’s like a “post game thread” and then a recap.

by VerStig on May 29, 2010 10:36 PM CDT up reply actions

It depends on if we have plans to go out drinking afterwards, honestly. If we do, then the placeholder goes up and we discuss it in full the next day. This method has become more prominent in the playoffs. In the regular season, we’d most of the time get a wrap up about an hour or two after the game was over.

I do have to go ahead and say that I agree (to an extent) with the "media experts."

I would LOVE IT if Dat Horsa Guy – you know, the Panda – picked up his game.

He’s been an absolute BEAST game in and game out, since the playoffs began.

He’s dominated in all three zones, and he’s barely put the puck in the net (directly) so far.

If he picks up his game any more, the media response would probably be “Wow – the new phonebooks are here!”

Verstig, I thought of a new project for you

I wonder if it’s possible to look at McCreery’s games officiating the Hawks and make a tally of calls for vs. calls against. My gut feeling is that they’re not exactly balanced.

Let me clarify in advance by saying if we lost tonight, i wouldn’t blame the refs for the loss, i’d blame the Hawks crappy play. However, i also don’t think he should ever officiate another game against the Hawks, certainly not in the SCF.

Don't complain.

The last time we opened a series with no power plays and lots of ridiculous penalties to the other team, we ended up sweeping the Sharks.

Let’s hope history holds.

Well, the good news is

we won the McCreary game. That was the only one I was afraid of. Devorski is the only other ref who might win a game for Philly, but if we can beat McCreary, we can beat Devorski too.

I still think Nashville had the best chance to beat the HAwks if they hadn’t tried to score a goal instead of playing D with a 1 goal lead on a power play with 30 seconds left in the game. If not for that brain cramp we might be going to your blog this week.

yeah 5 GA

but looked like most of those were correctable for lack of a better word. Watching the skating and speed when the Hawks went full tilt….Flyers could not keep up. Puzzling ref no calls, no PP all game, not Niemi’s best effort, our top line -9 total, Ladd out, Soupy limited, Sopel and Hendry playing a lot of minutes…and we win. 3rd period was Hawk domination a lot of the time. They could barely control the puck enough to pull their goalie at the end. Look at SOG as game went on and we played 5-5. Niemi calms his 1st SCF as a rookie jitters from here on. I’m going with my original prediction.

Hate to sound like a whiner since everyone is saying we're starting to sound like Scum fans but...

It’s getting pretty ridiculous with the penalty differential. That no-call on the Seabrook stick to the face really pissed me off. And yeah, missed calls happen and we took some dumb penalties, but it really hurts us when Kane doesn’t see the ice for 2 minutes and he really finds a rhythm on the powerplay with all that space. Just would’ve been nice to at least see one call on the Flyers. On the plus side, it shows how good of a team we are when we can have no powerplays, give up 5 goals, have our top line shut out yet still score 6 goals and win the game.

"Everything I know about life, I learned from my father watching the Blackhawks. It can all be summed up in 2 words, 2 simple words that ring over and over in my memory. Detroit Sucks!!! Detroit Sucks!!!"

Yeah, I'm not going to complain about the differential per se

but rather the specific calls that I saw weren’t made. I did see Richards get hooked once, I think, plus of course there was that Bolland trip off the FO. Though, that one was just funny.

about that no-call on seabrook... (and i don't mean to cause any controversy here)....

…. CBC took a look at it afterwards, they saw that Seabrook was using his stick on the puck, and his own stick actually lifted the Flyer’s stick into his face. valid non-call.

I thought that was still a penalty

Not trying to cause a controversy either or sound like I’m whining, but I actually thought that was still a penalty. I’m sure I’ve seen a call when a player lifts someone’s stick and it goes up and hits them, but that really doesn’t mean anything. I thought the only time you could get away with hitting someone in the face was on a natural follow through of a shot, otherwise you are expect to have complete control over your stick.

Haven't watched the recording of the game yet

but Kane didn’t look too good coming or going to me at the game tonight. Buff was invisible (especially to the refs early when Pronger cross checked him like 4 times in 10 seconds early in the game) and Toews had some surprising “Whaddya mean Toews didn’t come out with the puck?” moments. Everyone on that line was -3 tonight and IMO Kane was the worst. BUT…think about this….not only did we have McCreary, to deal with but our top line was -9 total and we WON.

Strange game

I’m not sure what positives Philly takes from this one: they shut down the previously unstoppable line, didn’t take a single penalty, got some fortunate bounces, took advantage of numerous mistakes by a previously stout defense, and they still lost the game.

by puppetmasterp on May 30, 2010 1:09 AM CDT up reply actions

About the Big Guns

So Kane/Toews/Buff didn’t quite get there tonight, causing some more mild shuffling by Q (always scary). Hawks managed to get it done without a Captain Marvel point, as they’ve had for almost the last month.

How long can we use them as a decoy for the rest of the gang before Philly realizes there’s a lot more firepower on this team?

by husler777 on May 30, 2010 2:26 AM CDT up reply actions

I guarantee

that first line is going to get some more breathing room. Sam said “The Flyers have not seen anything like the Hawks” and they proved him right tonight. Despite killing 8 minutes of penalty and losing the lead 2 times, they still came out on all lines looking to push the pace. Tazers line was neutralized tonight, however we got production from Kop and Weapon, guess what Philly, you have to play a complete game

Yeah, it’s hard to imagine Pronger playing much better or the Hawks playing much worse. This was a game they had to have, on Chicago’s ice, with a huge performance from the Briere line and nothing from Byfuglien/Toews/Kane, in game one. Leighton let this one get away, plain and simple.

2 goals and an assist mask a lot of no no’s. His set ups were pretty easy, but he DID go to the right spot and had a wicked accurate shot.. Certainly if he does that every game it’s great, but definitely not the best I’ve seen him play by a long shot.

The Flyers are bitching about the ice

saying ""It’s really chippy. A lot of snow accumulates really fast, so after the first couple of minutes you don’t see those nice crisp passes and things like that. It’s hot outside and humid and stuff like that so hopefully they’ll be able to do a better job for Game 2, the ice guys."

There was some event at the UC before this game

but I think those are done now so ice should be better. After Monday Philly will be telling their ice keeper to make it choppy for games 3&4 at Philly as they can’t near keep up with the Hawks speed when they turned it on.

by husler777 on May 30, 2010 2:50 AM CDT up reply actions

Wait a minute--I think the Hawks just turned it over again.

Was EVERY goal by the Flyers the result of a Hawks turnover? Sure seemed like it. The Hawks need to cut it out because my heart can’t take it.

Interesting that Q pretty much called out Toews’ line tonight in the postgame. “That’s the one line that has to get better.” Hmmm.

And what the heck attacked Hossa and Brow during their postgame newsconference? They both ducked like a bat was flying at them.

by Esquire02 on May 30, 2010 12:03 AM CDT up reply actions

but going down early prior to the shot is the problem

it shouldn’t be his initial reaction to a potential shot

by ChicagoNativeSon on May 30, 2010 12:12 AM CDT up reply actions

that depends

from the angle the shot was taken, it’s much harder to go high then to squeak it by low. I think Niemi played it right.

Perhaps you’re talking about him going down too early?

by aeroplane on May 30, 2010 9:13 AM CDT up reply actions

when they are shooting high, the rebounds tend to end up in the slot as opposed to the corners

thats what I was getting at, Niemi has given rebounds a hell of a lot, but its usually off the ironing boards, when its off a shoulder/blocker/stick, the rebounds are softer and easier to control and give the opposition more net to fire at

Hossa's Attorney says:

the Hawks D

also wasn’t doing a great job clearing out rebounds or blocking shots in the first place (11 BS, way down from the SJS series average). I’d say it was a combination of both, plus the turnovers.

by gmh on May 30, 2010 12:05 AM CDT up reply actions

agreed

I adressed something similar after period one, they were more mesmerized by the puck and not focused on moving white jerseys out of the slot. I just felt tonight that Niemi did move to the bottom of the net tonight, and it could be something that Philly looks at in coming games

by VerStig on May 30, 2010 12:08 AM CDT up reply actions

the shot blocking was great against SJ

but for some reason, they couldn’t get in front of the puck tonight. maybe it was the Pronger factor, who knows?

Hmm

I had a feeling that their VerRATING would be really good as a result, but it looks like we actually ended up looking better using that stat than with Corsi. There, it looks like Pronger only dominated the Toews line and the 4th line, not the others.

this was my big concern from the shot-chart

from the Sharks series. without those clears, there would have just been a lot of loose pucks in the crease vs. SJ, and we essentially saw as much tonight.

I’m assuming we’ll have a shot-chart coming from tonight’s game? man have Verstig and gmh spoiled me….

by gmh on May 30, 2010 1:16 AM CDT up reply actions

So this is a product of his glove hand, in a way?

Don’t people say to shoot low if you want rebounds?

by VerStig on May 30, 2010 12:07 AM CDT up reply actions

they do, 100% correct

but the Flyers know that the Hawks are going to play to cover whatever weakness that the goaltender has, basically cleaning up rebounds, which means getting numbers in front of your netminder, and making sure all attempts are 1 and done, we did a hell of a job against both Van and SJ in that regard, but as soon as high shots (especially from the point) come in against that methodology, there is a lot of pinball going on in front of the net, and it can leave your netminder out to dry. It might take them adjusting and pulling off the crease a bit to neutralize the soft rebounds that will come off high shots, basically make sure that there is 3-5 feet of clear ice for those rebounds to drop and be collected

The question at the BL was

who sits – Eager or Burrish? I’m tending towards Burrish only because I think Eager played well tonight and can do more damage to Philly than Burrish’s trash talking. However, a lot of arguments were made against that, so I just think it’s a coin flip.

Eager has incentive to play like a maniac against his former team, much like Sharp. He’s also dumber, but hey, the Flyers have Carcillo on their team, so it’s not like they’re the brightest bulbs in the hardware store either.

Boucher’s been Laviolette’s guy in the playoffs, so it would be interesting to see if the goalie pull tonight was a trial for Game 2, or just a breather for Leighton. Boucher eventually became the goalie of record for the Flyers, don’t forget.

I think it’s Bouch for next game. He looked more settled when he came in, despite having had such a long time off. He was horrible today…I mean people in my section turned to each other with “He let THAT in” looks before celebrating a few of the goals. The Eternal Recurrence of Leon Stickle

Yet another example of the decades-long effort on the part of on-ice officials and the league to punish the Broad Street Bullies for winning two Stanley Cups in the mid-70s and thereby ruining hockey’s image for a generation.

Third period looked halfway normal. I missed the first two periods because one of my best friends (not a hockey fan) got married. He will forever be in the penalty box.

I heard it was very sloppy. Hopefully Game 2 is worthy. Congratulations.

by BigCSouthside on May 30, 2010 12:21 AM CDT up reply actions

I think they may be overstating the "controversy" ...

I suppose the goal that was scored during the 4 minutes after Seabrook got hit in the face with a stick is also controversial because the Hawks should have been on a powerplay. That means the Hawks really won 5-4, not 6-5. In fact, this is so controversial I just can’t accept this as a legitimate hockey game until the score sheet is adjusted accordingly.

Any team that can’t win with four more powerplays can’t really complain about a whistle that didn’t get blown when the puck was in the neutral zone. This wasn’t exactly Hull’s toe in the crease.

just got back from the BL

it was really nice to see everyone again (and thanks for the ride home, ahnfire!). I think that game took five years off my life, so I’ll summarize:

- The Hawks needed to have at least one shutdown period if they wanted to win a game like this, and they finally did that in the third, thank god.
- Hossa went Mortal Kombat on that game, and Brouwer had some sterling finish to him today. That line was an absolute fucking terror in the offensive zone.
- if Bolland is a rat, does that make Versteeg a hamster? Oh, and can Ladd be a capybara? Fucking love those things.
- First three Flyers goals: rebounds, wtf. We scored twice from behind-the-net passes.
- Block more shots, people. Take away Hjammer’s 4 and we have 7 total. That’s not good enough, especially if this team is going to allow so many point shots.
- Simon Gagne was a specter tonight. Keep doing that.

yeah, no, seriously. I need to detox.

Haven't heard anything

He’s been back for 10 games. Hard to tell on TV if he’s having trouble with it. What’s odd is that he’s on a line with Richards, who has been all-world so you’d think Gagne would get some benefit from that.

Carter’s injury was more severe and he’s only been back for three games.

by flyersfaninchicago on May 30, 2010 12:41 AM CDT up reply actions

yeah, he got 20 mins TOI tonight

which is why his invisibility was so surprising to me. I guess you could also credit our shutdown pair/checking line, since the Richards line wasn’t as explosive tonight as they’ve been. Most of the damage was caused by the Briere line.

according to the H2H ice time

here, our top line was mostly victimized by the Briere-Leino-Hartnell line. The problem with this Flyers team is, they don’t dress a traditional checking line — their three top lines can all score, so the first line is going to have to play more defense in this series than against the Nucks or the Sharks, especially if Q is going to keep Meatball Soup on against the Briere line.

part of it was

their ability to take advantage of two bad turnovers in the neutral zone: the Campbell pass right to the stick of whoever, and Kane’s little whiff that led to the Briere goal at the end of the first (I think).

Things i liked:
*The reference to “Sad Panda” I heard on WGN radio on the way home. Again, whoever you were, well done sir.
*1st Hawks game-1 win at home these playoffs. And first SCF win in 37 years (I think, something like that)
*Still winning even though the Flyers played really well and we played like ass. This makes me feel better about Game 2, where i expect us to play better.
*Q deciding to stick with his goalie and not pull Niemi after the 5th goal.
*Faceoffs. yay!
*SCH women rock at showing up to the bar on game day (I think the ratio was 10:1)

Things I didn’t like:
*Our passing was AWFUL, and for stretches, the puck handling wasn’t much better.
*I though Seabrook was playing well for a while….and then I became reacquainted with Jan-March 2010 Seabrook. Really Biscuit?
*2 periods of playing like ass, even if we did show up in the 3rd.
*The number of times I heard the phrase “Bizarro World” tonight. The LAST was by Barry Melrose on the radio. This is not a part of the season we need to revisit.
*my heart rate going through the roof so bad I was wistfully for Dick Cheney’s pacemaker.
*SCH men are lame and fail at showing at the bar (except hackerer). Not that I’m judging. Ok, maybe I am.

I'm hearing excuses

it’s the Stanley Cup Finals!!!!! What are you doing outside Chicago? When the Bears were in the Super Bowl, I flew back to watch even though I knew they’d lose. Hell, I flew back from Guatemala! by hairhelmet on May 30, 2010 6:17 AM CDT up reply actions

So what did I learn?

Now that my heart rate is about back to normal (they expect me to survive 3-6 more games like this how, exactly?), I learned the following:

- The Philly forecheck is every bit as good as advertised. Those guys are fast and hungry and they don’t quit. After the number of turnovers they forced last night, I’d expect them to bring even more of it Monday.
- Niemi showed me something just as important as in those incredible games against SJ, namely the ability to come up with a big save on a night when he’s NOT playing well. The guy just has a terrific demeanor. With both offenses in overdrive, the difference was the couple of big saves Niemi made v. the zero big saves Leighton made.
- Hawks have to do a better job of clearing traffic and rebounds. I don’t know how you strategize that, but it has to get better. And where was the shot blocking last night, anyway?
- Hossa is thisclose to opening a giant-size can of “I’m Marian Fucking Hossa and you’re not” all over these guys. Both those assists last night were awesome possession plays.
- I don’t care how well conditioned he is, if Pronger has to play 32 very physical minutes a game he’s going to wear down. This is a huge difference from the minutes he played against offensively retarded teams in previous rounds. The style of play for Keith is no different than it’s been all year; it’s very different for all the Philly d-men. Keep it up, wear them down.
- The league obviously wants a 7-game series, and believes that the only way to get one is to call no penalties on the Flyers at all. (sarcasm button engaged) Seriously, this is twice now, both in the first game of a series. And our guys just keep playing, and winning – love it.
- If Laviolette starts Boucher in Game 2 and he gets drilled, what do the Flyers do then? Goalie roulette?
- That shutdown period in the 3rd was as awesome as the first two periods were exciting. I’d love to see every 3rd period in this series played like that.

3 to go!

"Eighty-five percent of the fuckin' world's working. The other fifteen come out here." - Lee Elia

by TenMinuteMisconduct on May 30, 2010 7:20 AM CDT reply actions

What I learned

-Well, both sides can score. That’s something. (/Understatement)

-I’m with you on the shot blocking. Flyers got a little of that but not to the degree of other games.

-Someone in the other thread suggested it was a bad idea to let Boucher be active for this game (and worse for him to come in during the 3rd). I disagree. It’s the Stanley Cup Finals, and as much as you guys dislike/hate Huet I’d much rather have him one injury away from playing in the finals (which, given the Flyers’ season to date, is entirely likely) than Johan Backlund. Same goes for Boucher. At this stage of the year, you dress your best, period.

As for the change, well, I think it’s going to be more of a “live to fight another day” type deal. I’d expect Leighton in net on Monday. Personally, I wouldn’t mind a switch from a goalie with rebound control/5-hole problems to someone closer to Niemi’s weaknesses, but I think one’s as good as the other at this point.

-This game is already drawing a lot of comparisons to Game 3 in Montreal on our side. If their response to this game is anything like it was to that game, you might see a much lower scoring game.

-I’d assume there were missed calls (I miss most penalties when they happen live) against the Flyers, but I’d say that’s evened out by the non-whistle (for hitting a player on the bench) before the last goal. ::shrug:: At the end of the day, refs miss calls. It happens every game of every year, and it WAS the most disciplined I’ve seen them play otherwise. I’d assume you guys will get a chance on the PP soon enough on Monday.

(Side note: You’re being sarcastic, but I’d be shocked if tons of people (pro-Hawk or anti-Flyer) who aren’t saying that exact thing seriously).

- I’m continually amazed by what Pronger can do. Sure he might wear down, but I haven’t seen it yet.

- Ryan Parent’s 42 seconds make me think something’s up. They have a few other d-men to choose from if they’d like, so I wouldn’t be surprised to see a Danny Syvret or an Oskars Bartulis paired with Kraicjek (who’s a disaster in his own right, but I digress). I can’t think of anyone who would be sad to see Parent go.

by Aphilfan on May 30, 2010 8:54 AM CDT up reply actions

Syvret would be a good option as he does have experience in big games dating back to the Memorial Cup with London (where he was teammates with Bolland) and the Gold Medal Game in the WJHC in 2005 (where he won gold with current teammates Mike Richards and Jeff Carter, as well as current opponents Brent Seabrook and Colin Fraser). Worth a shot if you ask me.

1. I don’t think either side was happy with an 11 goal game. Even without the Flyers’ reaction, I’m already betting on a lower scoring game tomorrow.
2. I don’t believe in calls “evening out” (well, maybe in the NBA, but not here). You can’t judge by the result of the call/non-call whether things came out equal. If your guys had scored on 3 of 4 PP’s rather than 1 of 4, would one non-call on the puck hitting a player on the bench have evened things out then? No, and it doesn’t even things out this way either. Though I suppose our PK scoring as many goals as your PP is reason enough for me to shrug and say “whatever”.

my dreams last night consisted of:

1. Hawks being down 6-5, late in the third, and
2. Hawks losing

Fuck that. Reality is so much better today.

Leighton looked like a deer in the headlights

that got run over by the car bus. Loved it when the crowd chanted, “Leeeeiiiiiiigggghhhhhton…Leeeeeiiiiiiggggghhhhhton!!!”

Impossible

Last night if Leighton stepped in front of a bus it would have gone between his legs.

What I learned watching the game

in a hotel bar in downtown SF.

1. Never look away for a second because I’ll miss a goal
2. Watching a Hawks game, especially the anthem, with the sound off sucks
3. Philly fans, regardless of their present physical location, are completely classless dicks.

I guess they would be happy to know that if 8 of my colleagues attending the same conference as I am would treat me like that then I have no desire to find out what reception I would get IN Philly at game 4. I’ll stay in New York where people are nicer!

The stat of the night for me

was Sopes getting over 20 minutes.

I don’t particularly like this stat. Especially since Campbell looked bad last night. Made me wonder if he’s playing hurt.

Hossa loves the Flyers

His career playoff numbers against the Flyers is pretty outstanding as shown here:

16 GP 8 G 14 A 22 PTS +10 45 SOG {17.8%} with 1 GWG and has an overall 13-3 record against them. Wow.

Let's update those shall we?

That would be (after last night):

17 GP 8 G 16 A 24 PTS +12 47 SOG {17.0%} with 1 GWG and a 13-4 (my mistake) record. Crazy numbers against an opponent at this time of year.

Random Thoughts

Other than the McCreary factor, I can’t figure out how the hell the Flyers went the whole game without a penalty. Clown shoes or not, it would have been nice to get a power play or two just to be on the offensive for a few minutes.
While the officiating sucked, the Hawks did catch a couple of breaks. (The puck hitting Kop on the bench and putting Campbell in the box instead of Hammer). I think the play that pissed me off the most was when one of the refs did not get out of Brouwer’s way when he was trying to drive to the net.
Bad turnovers by Campbell, Kane and Hossa lead to goals. I’ll gave a pass to Hossa because other than that turnover he was in “I’m Marion Hossa and you’re not.” mode.
The Hawks had a good 3rd period. I think some of this is due to the fatigue of the Flyers 4 D-Men logging too many minutes and that will only make things worse for them as this series goes on.
Niemi was not good but Leighton was worse. Hopefully Niemi keeps in form follows up with a bad game with a good one.
Kop’s goal celebration of pounding on the glass cracked me up. It reminded me of the NHL commercial where the father pounds on the glass in the hospital nursery.
It’s getting to the point that I’d rather watch a game on Versus. I can’t stand these NBC broadcasts.

"Niemi was not good......."

IMO, defense was nonexistant on most of the goals. The 4th goal was on Niemi. The others, Jesus Christ would have had a hard time with.

My comment

should have probably read Niemi was not good in the 1st two periods. He seemed to be out of position a few of the shots that didn’t go in. You’re right about the non existent defense.

Apparently

Last night’s game had the best Game 1 overnight’s in 11 years and did 12% better than last year’s Game 1. Good to see that even when Scum and the Pens are golfing we’re still beating them.

If the series continues in this manner

during which game will the following happen:

1.) Doc Emerick has a coronary incident/stroke
2.) Jim Cornelison’s head asplode during the anthem, because he is singing so loud
3.) McGuire asks for Buff’s phone number
4.) Sam is treated for alcohol poisoning

How about all of the above?

If I only get 1 choice it would be #2. I don’t really care for Cornelison or for that fact Wayne Messmer. It’s not so much the way they sing but the way they act. I met Messmer and I found him to be pretty much in love with himself and a bit of a tool. Right or wrong, I get the same feeling watching Cornelson perform and in interviews.

Keeping in mind that I couldn't SEE the game (like ANY of the games in the SCF - fuckers)

I get the feeling from most of the post-game that I’ve read, and stat reviewing, and sitting through it in the GDT and NHL Gamecenter with everyone, that we’re in good shape.

I think that the game that the Flyers played last night was about the same game that they brought against Montreal (in their wins). That, to me, is good because I think that’s the game that they want to play, and its a game where they are controlling the tempo.

It seemed to me that later in the 2nd and throughout the 3rd, our boys went into “Impose our will” mode, and controlled things a lot more.

There was probably some level of jitters, and it certainly appeared that some of our boys had some issues looking to play pretty early on. Crazy 88 certainly seemed to be trying to be pretty at home again. 51Phantom may have just been the victim of the aggressive forecheck. That, seems to be a problem that happens to them sometimes. If you look at the early games against the Canucks, that happened too. They simply shortened up the Offense a little bit in the next game or two, and played a little tighter control until they gained the zone, or dumped a little smarter, and started out-hustling them to the corners. I believe that this is probably what we’ll see on Monday night. They’ll go back to “simple hockey mode.”

The pace of last nights game appeared to shift in our favor, later on and I believe that we’ll have better success playing our game, and dictating the pace from the get-go on Monday. As many have pointed out, the Flyers top 4 D were icehogs (no, they weren’t up in Rockford – they were all on the ice forever in Chicago) last night. That’s going to impact them at some point in time in one way or another. Either, they will shorten their shifts, and try some other matchups, or they’ll tire out and DDN/Buff McNuggets will start to have impact.

While I’m on that subject, It was our secondary scoring last night, by a long shot, that made the difference for us. The Rat did what he does – neutralize the opposing PP in more ways than one. If the Flyers make any adjustments at all to try to negate our secondary scoring – it opens up ice for DDN/Buff. Hossa was a BEAST. Kop played his ASS off, and VERSTEEG! appeared to play smartly as well. Niemi was left out there at a critical moment – and responded in a big “Nieme sanoo ei” sort of way. I expect a big game from everyone on Monday night. Certainly Niemi.

Also… No idea what Q plugs into the line generator, but what to do when Ladd comes back? TBrou and Kop definitely showed that they’re ready to play. Eagish I’m 50/50 on them. Eager seemed to play very solidly – aside from the dumb penalties. The same goes for Burish – the dumbass boarding call – the consensus was that it was stupid.

Again – I’ve got no more TV, so this is the general feeling/impression that I got during the game, and in afterthought reviewing of the stats. Eventually, the Flyers are more than likely going to summon the clown shoes to the ice. They won’t, in all likelihood play several infraction games. What are the odds of two consecutive opponents pulling THAT off?

Please feel free to respond, make observations, etc. Like I said – I haven’t seen so much as a highlight from game 1 yet.

Everyone dies. It is the only true and lasting justice in life.

What I'm worried about is

Isn’t Phantom supposed to be one who helps us beat the forecheck? I’m willing to chalk it up to a “Brian Campbell game” a la Matt McClure, but if we’re going to be able to keep any momentum going, we’ll need him to be on his game.

I think Hossa got the best matchups last night (was it really just last night?). Briere’s line was owning DDN+Buff, while Weapon’s line drew Richards. I get the feeling that some of these matchups will change as the series progresses.

Re: Eagish — yes they took those dumb penalties early, but they really started to bring it after that and especially after Boosh was brought in (I think they almost scored a goal?). Great energy, best 4th line showing in a while.
