Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Nice Catch Hayes.... - Stanley Cup Finals Game 1 Thoughts.

...don't ever fuckin' do it again.

To give a blow-by-blow recap would just give us flashbacks equivalent to just spinning yourself around in circles in the front yard until you vomit up last night's pizza, beer, and cat hair, so let's just skip right to what we saw from last night.

  • Chris Pronger logged 32 minutes of ice time, had two assists, was a stupid +17 in CORSI (the next closest was Hartnell at +6) and kept the Toews' line off the scoresheet and saddled with a combined minus-9. However, maybe it was just me and all the High Life catching up  with me, but he didn't appear to be nearly as big of a factor in the latter half of the game as he was the first.
  • Even with Pronger's stat line, Danny Briere was the best player on the ice for either team last night. He was absoultely everywhere, and even managed to backcheck a couple of times, which naturally happens after the entire SCH staff unequivocally declares he's going to avoid his defensive zone like I avoid showering.
  • Not too far behind him though, was Marian Hossa, who had multiple "I'm Marian Hossa And You're Not Moments", two of which resulted in Troy Brouwer goals. That entire line was dynamite for the entire evening, putting Braydon Coburn in the burn unit with a -3.
  • The Flyers top line of Richards, Carter, and Gagne were also a -7, and barely noticeable other than Carter's walk out chance early in the first.
  • While the Toews line was bad, he did dominate on faceoffs, going 18 for 24, and the Hawks team as a whole going 40 for 64. At one point in the first, the Hawks had won 13 of 15.
  • The officiating was horse shit. Every call the Hawks had against them they rightfully earned, but to think the Flyers (THE PHILADELPHIA GODDAMN FLYERS) could play an infraction free game is ludicrous.
  • That Tomas Kopecky scored the game winner while being a late insert into the roster only due to Andrew Ladd's injury should show everyone just how deep this Hawks team is,
  • Brian Campbell had the inevitable "Brian Campbell Game", where he made decisions that could most complimentary be described as "curious". Antti Niemi could have also played better (though he did make the saves he needed to make). And fortunately, the Hawks survived the "Brian Campbell Game" and the "Antti Niemi Game". One down, three to go.
Player of the Game
Hossasuit_medium
While Brouwer had two huge goals, they were made possible by Dat Horsa Guy, who was appears he's not going to be denied during his third straight go-around with this sorta thing.

It was also "our top line was shutout game"

To think that all of that happened in one game and we still walked away with a W . . . bodes well for the immediate future.

Stat of the game

Toews: -3. I feel bad for the self-flagellation going on right now, and for the next 22.5 hours (imagine the comparative tranquility between Kane and Buff’s ears.)

At 7 PM tomorrow, I’ll feel bad for whomever is then across from him (not really.)

That's not fair

I think at least Kane and probably Buff too are disappointed in their performances, too. This is the dream of everyone in that locker room, not just Toews. Kane has just as much drive and love of hockey as Toews but shows it differently.

not that we could get the data

but i could take a stab at ordering hours of sleep last night among these three.

of course it’s not fair to hold anyone to Toews’ standards- that’s why I used the word ‘comparative’.

I didn't mean it wasn't fair to compare them

I meant it’s unfair to say that when you don’t have any idea if it’s true. Toews is wonderful and I love him as much as anyone. But Kane has just as much love for hockey and drive to succeed as Toews does, and I get tired of seeing comments essentially saying Kane doesn’t care when there’s no way to know if that’s true or not.

Toews is beating himself up more because he strikes me as an extraordinary person that way.

Maybe I’m wrong- I’ve never met any of these guys.

But please don’t represent my comment as “essentially saying Kane doesn’t care.”

Sorry, but you implied

that Buff and Kane were sleeping soundly because there’s nothing concerning them to keep them up. Essentially saying they don’t care. If you don’t want it represented that way, you shouldn’t imply it then.

Not saying Kane is lazy

but I will say he doesn’t often go into the “danger zones” where a guy like Pronger might give him worse than a dirty look. I hate watching Kane razzle dazzle on the PP along the boards, take a long stroll with the puck along the blue line and then eventually pass it back to a D vs. getting from the boards to between the circles, drawing guys out to take a hit and THEN passing to an open man while he gets clobbered for the team. Teams defend knowing he ain’t gonna crash to the net with the puck. IF he does THAT once or twice the PP lanes start to open up for passes. Toews does it. Buff does it. Kane….not so much.

by husler777 on May 31, 2010 1:43 PM CDT up reply actions

Kane will be fine

Did you not see him take it to the net and try to roof that shat on Boucher? He’s as tough a 5’8" player as there is in the NHL.

BTW – when Buff and Toews are on your line and you are 5’8" 170lbs it would be smart to let the others do the work, then pass it to them so they can get a goal. Sounds like teamwork and a good idea to me

He’s fucking great and we are lucky to have him

Oh yeah...he's great for sure

and I’m not saying Kane should go set a screen for Buff’s shots from the point in front of Pronger. I still stand by my comments about Kane not going down the middle on the when he has a chance and doing that once or twice would open up space for others. Watch how much space he has tonight when he’s dipsy doodling along the boards to go to the middle. They wouldn’t dare give that space to Hossa or Toews.

And this statement

He’s as tough a 5’8" player as there is in the NHL.

Well, no sense starting a war about it during the SCF…so let’s just agree to disagree and drop that discussion if OK w/ you.

by husler777 on May 31, 2010 2:44 PM CDT up reply actions

This is an inane conversation

The players use their individual skills in order to make the team better, having a little guy screening the goaltender would be inefficient and a waste of Kane’s talent. Kane is by far the best playmaker on the team and the size of Buf and Toews open lanes for Kane to shoot or make passes that lead to scoring opportunities.

Kane is an offensive force and is only 20, what makes Toews so great is that as a center he is willing to and knows how to play defense as well, Kane may learn that skill eventually as well and make himself that much better.

Well 21 actually and as a 1st overall pick playing his 3rd year in the league you’d expect some offensive talents wouldn’t you?
the size of Buf and Toews open lanes for Kane to shoot

EXACTLY. And with those lanes open my point was and continues to be he’s soft in going to the net with the puck and prefers to play on the perimeter and other team’s are accounting for that. It’s much easier for them to shut down passing lanes when you know he’s not going up the middle with the puck. I think if he took the puck more times towards the net and shot from between the circles or at least forced other teams to respect that he MIGHT take it up the middle he’d open up more scoring chances for his teammates AND score more goals himself.

Some thoughts:

In the first two periods, the Hawks went back to the way they were playing against Nashville. The D to D breakout pass is too slow, and the forwards were too far up the ice to help out once the Philly forecheck got ahold of them. The lack of urgency coming out of our end also allowed that big monkey Pronger and his ilk to set up in the neutral zone making it even harder for the Hawks to penetrate the Philly zone.

Also, the D had some trouble clearing away loose pucks, which resulted in that douchy Chewbacca (Scott hartnell) scoring down low.

Both of those problems totally forgotten in the 3rd, where the Hawks went back to dominating both ends like they had been in the WCF.

The Officiating was brutal, and made me want to drop the biggest elbow in the history of pro wrestling from the 300 level last night.

If this keeps up, I’m gonna be dead by game 3.

Hossa's Attorney says:

by BigCSouthside on May 30, 2010 3:58 PM CDT up reply actions

I also thought the officiating was garbage,

Especially in the Second when it looked like Brouwer had a step on their defenseman 1 on 1 and O’halloran instead of backing away from the play into the boards, seemed to back in towards the net. This made Brouwer have to take his foot of the gas and gave the flyers defenseman a better angle to defend from. It is one thing to have bad judgement or to miss something on a play, but to be so far out of position on a rush to give one team an advantage is unacceptable, especially for a referee who graded out high enough this season to be rewarded with a spot in the SCF. I bet if if Brouwer had to do it over again, he would put his head down and pound the shot towards the net, it’s not his fault Dan O’halloran decided to the the third flyers defenseman for a couple seconds. Hopefully they can find a couple of striped shirts that have a fucking clue for monday and beyond.

Brouw should have cut a little wider and ripped a shot

using stripes as the screen – stripes looks like an even bigger tol or maybe even gets hit with the shot (although, as I recall a shot that hits the ref and goes directly into the net is a “no goal” washout)

Confusion will be my epitaph.

by krome on May 31, 2010 11:22 AM CDT via mobile up reply actions

I think you're right on the washout,

but since the play became sort of a washout, drilling the ref with the puck or using him as a screen are all pretty good outcomes.

Philly should be worried

Almost everything broke right for them last night. 1. Niemi wasn’t awesome (I’d give him a C-). 2. The Toews line was bad. Johnny himself was a beast at the dot but Kane and Buff were non-existant. 3. They got zero penalties. 4. Campbell had the yips in his own zone.

Despite all those advantages, they couldn’t steal this one. Had Leighton even played a D game, instead of an F game, they win. Instead they let one slip away.

Regarding Pronger:

Lots of folks here keep talking about him wearing down if he keeps up this ice time, but I think the bigger problem for Philly is that he can’t play ALL 60 minutes! He was very good out there, and he will continue to be. But the other D-men for Philly are going to be their downfall. NHL on the Fly had a wonderful (for a Hawks fan) montage of one of the Flyers D-men (Carle or Coburn, I think) getting beaten over and over again by Kane, Hossa, and other Hawks.

Oh, and if Buff falls down on any of those crosschecks by Prongs, a penalty (on Pronger) is called. I’m not saying take a dive, but if it were anyone other than Buff in there, Elbows is in the box. (Assuming they were going to call ANY against the Hawks last night.)

I fart in your general direction. Your mother was a hamster and your father smelt of elderberries.

by Preacher000 on May 30, 2010 4:24 PM CDT reply actions

Pronger wearing down...

I’m not sure why people think that. The Hawks had a nice 10 minute run there at the start of the third where they dominated including against Pronger. However, if you look at the C&B numbers you will see that the last 4 PHI scoring chances at the end of the game included Pronger on the ice.

As for the “no calls” against the Flyers I think that is simple to explain. The Flyers were playing more disciplined then they normally do and the Refs didn’t call penalties out of shock. Just like when the teacher is constantly waiting for the big outburst from the troublemaker she is sometimes immune to and doesn’t notice the lesser stuff from them…

by DaleHalas on May 30, 2010 6:23 PM CDT up reply actions

Be nice to see the Hawks help to wear Pronger down

I’m not sure how many hits he took, but adding a few will take it’s toll. If he wants to block shots…hey…that’s fine too. Just don’t avoid him because he’s too big to mess with.

by husler777 on May 31, 2010 1:56 PM CDT up reply actions

Hey guess what, we get eleven more years of dat Horsa guy!

Kane and Toews were both brutal on themselves in postgame interviews, and the coach called them out in his postgame presser, so based on previous history, I expect Kane to come out with hellfire in his hands tomorrow. Those two won’t stand for being held quiet for long, and there were long stretches last night where they got sort of cutesy with the puck. I expect the line in the dressing room will be ‘simplify’.

It would be satisfying to see Seabs jump up into the play and lay Pronger out with an explosion against the boards. I’m sort of hoping we get to see that sometime this series.

Up until the third, I was concerned. But having seen this team go back to their own game, seemingly settle some SCF nerves and shake off the week-off rust, then dominate, I feel better. It’s a little baffling that Philly seemed to want to try and play the end-to-end run and gun with us, but hey, if they’ll let us run our style of offense, I’m not complaining. I prognosticate that tomorrow will see a course correction heavily in the other direction tomorrow night, and try to clog the neutral zone to slow play. Slow means that their d-men don’t get as tired, so the Hawks need to work to keep the pace up and really press the action to make Pronger and Co. work.

I don't know that they'd take Burr out. Seems like Q really likes him as an energy guy in playoffs

But if the Bolland line starts showing signs of getting in the Flyers heads like he did the Sharks or Nucks, then Burrish’s agitator tendencies become more disposable. Laddie’s too good (and that line worked too well with him in) to stay out for long.

by spokeinthebandwagon on May 30, 2010 4:33 PM CDT up reply actions

I LOVE Burish but...

I think if it’s a choice, I keep Eager in (he seemed to skate REALLY well last night), keep Kop (he looks like he’s trying to prove something) and bring in Ladd (if his injury doesn’t lessen his usual high degree of play). And Burish sits. Right now, his contribution on the ice is just a bit less than Eager’s. And you can’t leave Ladd out if he’s available to play.

Regardless, isn’t it a nice dilemma to have? So many good players, so few open spots.

I fart in your general direction. Your mother was a hamster and your father smelt of elderberries.

Burish

I still think Burish is viewed as a good luck charm. Or at least a calming influence on the team. That is the only reason I can some up with that has him suited up over Kopecky.

Personally, I’d like to see Ladd with Toews and Kane and Buf replacing Burish on the fourth. Of course I’d take anyone but Buf on that top line. Put Buf on the top PP but leave him on the fourth at even play…

Not 5on5 he isn’t. Buff is “-6” in the playoffs in +/-. He is the biggest liability on defense of the forwards on the Hawks postseason. And the only regular top 9 forward with a “-” rating during the season.

Yea, he has been more of a force on the road in the playoffs then the regular season. Still I don’t want Toews saddled with both Kane and Buff against a two way team 3 lines deep…

I think Ladd's out

Watching the play over and over, there was not much of a hit to hurt himself. I assume his hand or wrist got into an awkward place and he either sprained it or broke a bone. He’s NOT playing Monday and I only see him coming back after the Hawks are up to 3 wins just so that they reward him with his name on the Cup. Shame cause I’d like to see him out there….he helps this team a LOT.

by husler777 on May 31, 2010 1:59 PM CDT up reply actions

I think his name would be on there anyway

because I’m pretty sure the criteria for getting your name on there is either 41 reg-season games or a Cup Final game.

So Ladd would be on there even if he didn’t come back for a game (which I hope is not going to happen!) as would Huet (I like Huey, but I hope he’s not needed).

I’m not so sure they wanted to play run and gun, but I think it just sort of ended up that way due to all around sloppy play from both teams. Worked out for us though, but I wouldn’t mind seeing us tighten up a bit.

Weird Game

I’m not sure what to make of last night but it must have been nerves all around for the Hawks as well as the Flyers. The first two periods we so frigging sloppy it was ridiculous. I’m glad Niemi was decent enough and he missed one goal with the toe by millimeters. He was good enough obviously. I woke up this morning wondering what the hell I really saw last night and wished I could see a replay. Definitely too many giveaways and even Hossa had a big one, though he was probably the best player on the ice overall. I’m glad today is a day of rest, though I am having a few beers to get rid of this groggy feeling, will knock me out early tonight.

Hopefully we see a real game tomorrow but hey, after all that the Hawks won!!!

Last Flyers game with no penalties against - Nov 26 2000

It’s why they lost. Something happens to team biorhythms or middle ear function if they don’t spend some time in the box. You should really hope it continues rather than complain about it.

If Hossa starts playing his best it’s over. There’s no X factor on the Philly side to match it, short of Kate Smith giving birth to a 24-year-old Bobby Orr.

Pronger isn’t going to get worn out. Move on to other “key factors.” In Game 3 against Montreal he was a minus three or four and in the box for the other goal and everyone said he was starting to look tired. He must have a nap because he was the hammer in that second period of Game 4 when Montreal got one shot on net. He’ll make mistakes, he’ll get beat wide by guys like Kane in a way that he wouldn’t have five years ago. But he won’t wear down or get tired, or age any quicker than the rest of us, one day at a time.

Finally watched the first two periods. I"m throwing them away. Third period was useful, demonstrating many of Chicago’s small advantages in this series.

The “History Will Be Made” series is the best marketing idea the NHL has ever head (not that there’s much competition) but someone should tell them history isn’t made every day. Recording Leino’s breakaway against Halak or virtually all of Byfuglien’s clutch goals looks stupid when you compare them to Gretzky’s breakaway that marked the transfer of power between two of the league’s great dynasties.
Although they should have a commercial ready in case Steve Coates from the Flyers broadcast team ever says anything of value.

Remember when they used to play back-to-back weekend playoff games? After making us wait for a week we should be able to gorge a little.

So it’s been nearly 10 years since a no penalty game for the Flyers.

Is Pronger a machine? (But I also heard the theory that Pronger paces himself and only really goes “all out” when he absolutely has to.)

I think that's a fair read on Pronger

and the big difference between now and five years ago (well, that and the lost step or two to the outside). It’s another reason why he won’t get tired. It’s also why his status as a dirty player is more reputation than practice these days.

I’m not saying he isn’t dirty. I’m saying he isn’t as scary as he was five years ago, when he was the most talented sociopath in the league. I’m a Flyers fan, remember. I don’t have a problem with saying he’s dirty, in fact I’m a little sad he’s lost his edge some. But it’s all part of his strategy for playing 30-35 minutes a game when his team needs him, at the age of 35.

Maybe mini-McCreary (Devorski) gets one game, but the NHL HAS to be thinking about it’s showcase event on NBC being besmirched due to bad officiating. When fans and press focus on the ineptitude segments of the game instead of on the teams and players in the championship series, I think they will correct that. Dear CapsFan75

I’m sure you would agree that squeaking into the playoffs is better than whimpering out of them, unless of course you think it’s a hockey team’s purpose to be a competitive entertainment destination during the regular season.

It’s fun to come to Washington in the spring to see the cherry blossoms fall to the ground and then watch the Caps do the same.

The Phillies are more popular than the Flyers because baseball is more popular than hockey. A perfect game is pretty big news, especially when it’s by the guy who is supposed to win them the Series this year.

I have no idea how or when they get their ratings numbers. Judging from the threads in philly.com’s live chat the ninth inning began during the first intermission and the final out came shortly after the beginning of the second period. Nobody was paying attention to the hockey game at that point. I think the poll asking the chatters which event was more historic – the Flyers return to the final or the perfect game – turned out 73/27 for the latter. They had the lead at that point, 3-2, so they were pretty psyched.

You can choose to interpret this as mealy fan support but I think you’d be mistaken. It was a 30-minute diversion.

I know that almost all of Philadelphia leaves town on Memorial Day weekend to head to the Jersey shore, or Delaware, or to a lesser extent the Poconos. I don’t know whether the 25 rating is a percentage of all TVs turned on at that moment or a percentage of all households with a TV, whether on or off.

No excuses here (none needed, as far as I’m concerned) but perhaps this can explain some of it.

by flyersfaninchicago on May 30, 2010 5:38 PM CDT up reply actions

Admittedly, it’s probably more of a thrill to make it to the Finals after squeaking in than to win the division and get bounced early.

I’m not surprised that baseball is more important to Philly than hockey. And given that it was a perfect game going on, of course, you all would be more interested in that.

I’m actually a baseball fan myself. Until the Nats came to Washington, we actually used to travel to Philly for long weekends and would watch the Phillies. And actually rooted for them.

I think there are flaws in many of the TV rating systems anyhow.

Both goalies obviously didn’t perform well. I’m just glad Niemi isn’t playing psychological games with himself, trying to coax himself into believing otherwise. Not sure what you mean here. Exactly what was wrong with Leighton’s remarks?

If you look at C&B’s grading of chances, every goal the Hawks scored was a quality chance. And every good scoring chance the Hawks had they scored. He stopped all of the non-quality chances. He just didn’t stop really good chances. That’s exactly what he said…

by DaleHalas on May 30, 2010 9:57 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm not so sure

Does a quality scoring chance (as C&B defines it, which is a quasi-standard in the stats geek community as far as I can tell) correspond to the stoppability of a puck from the goalie’s perspective? The way I see it, the first three goals on Niemi, aside from the rebound control, were tough to pin on him, yet I’d definitely consider those quality chances.

by VerStig on May 30, 2010 10:00 PM CDT up reply actions

C&B quasi-standard scoring chances...

… mean that the Flyers should have won 3 to 2. I think they are really upset with both goaltenders for not living up to their model. :)

Actually, I thought Niemi hit their model closer since at least two of those goals went off his own defensemen to put him out of position to stop.

Truth is, though, that the Hawks aren’t living up to their own model. They aren’t winning time of possession (corsi) as much as expected. So they aren’t winning the C&B chances either. They ARE being more efficient with their chances but that is NOT the Bowman way. Wonder if he is upset with them over that???

That’s what I actually find to be the interesting part of looking at stats — how to explain the noise. It’s the deviations from the mean that often correspond to the fun stuff to watch in the game itself. Shorties, for example.

I can take that conclusion (that we convert on a lot of scoring chances and don’t give up goals on the many scoring chances we give up) and just as easily say that it’s a measure of how the goalies have performed.

Plus, 5 scoring chances, 5 goals, is kinda like 5 red-zone opportunities, 5 TDs.

To me the C&B scoring chances have the same issues as Corsi or simply shots. Every shot taken has a completely different percentage chance to go in. Its true that most C&B scoring chances will result in goals more often then non-C&B scoring chances. But within the C&B scoring chances they don’t all have the same chance.

It is wrong in a game to compare goalies save percentages and say one goalie was better because his save percentage was better. SV% is too dependent on the quality of shots.

C&B have the same issue for scoring chances. If you allow more then 1 goal out of every 7 “scoring chances” then you had a bad game. The Hawks had some seriously high chances not just “normal” scoring chances in that game. To be honest one of the worse chances they had was on a “break away”.

I really like the C&B data but I have problems with their analysis. And to be honest they have a serious groupthink issue on their side, too. It isn’t just on the “pooh-poohers” of stats side…

by DaleHalas on May 30, 2010 10:51 PM CDT up reply actions

If you follow some of the links

or maybe it was just me poking around BtN and PP and stuff — but people do try to do stuff like this and “grade” shots (like A, B, C etc., with an implied percentage too). I think that gets too messy for my liking. It’s like figure skating scores — they work, but I just don’t like the idea, even if there isn’t a better alternative.

by VerStig on May 30, 2010 11:02 PM CDT up reply actions

That’s what computers are for. Just let them do the computing and give me the results…

by DaleHalas on May 30, 2010 11:10 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm glad you mentioned figure skating

most of the time, you can compare two skaters and make almost-objective conclusions about A being better than B.

At Olympic levels of competition though, differences are tiny and it’s not so clear-cut, as evidenced by frequent dissatisfaction with results.

I for one am comfortable with inconclusive outcomes here, but of course a victor must be annointed, so we live with an imperfect system.

Many sports have a different imperfect system- the scoreboard. This is a lot cleaner in that everyone understands the fairly objective criteria for declaring the victor.

The scoreboard algorithm doesn’t guarantee to idenitfy the “better” team or even the better performance. Again, I never understood the BCS mania- all it proves is that one team scored more than another on a given day.

Gauging individual effectiveness within a team sport is like figure skating but even more complicated. And hockey, with its fluidity and long chains of causality and ability to churn out unique scenarios is a real bitch. It’s as if the game were designed to torture statisticians.

Gentlemen! I have invented...this thing!

by cliffkoroll on May 31, 2010 10:01 AM CDT up reply actions

Or, if you're me, you enjoy it more

To me, a sport like baseball (don’t get me wrong — it’s still a fun sport), which seems practically tailor-made for statisticians, loses some of the excitement because you can characterize so much of it that way.

I think hockey makes for more interesting statistical work because so much can’t be captured with the raw numbers. It forces you to be creative, and my hope is, that in doing so, you can reveal more about the game than you otherwise could.

Also, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with the scoreboard system. That’s why they play the darn game!

by VerStig on May 31, 2010 10:33 AM CDT up reply actions

I'm glad you find it interesting

rather than frustrating, because I find it incredibly rich.

That’s why they play the game? I think I disagree, but that’s another tangent.

I’d say- that’s how they determine the outcome. We all want some way to determine the outcome, and a scoreboard is a better way of doing this than alternatives.

Back to figure skating (or evaluating individual hockey players): to say someone is “better” than someone else requires boiling things down to a single yardstick- the fallacy of reification (see Stephen J. Gould’s “The Mismeasure of Man”)

I actually think, e.g. OPS in baseball comes closer than anything to capturing “skill while hitting”, but even it masks quite a bit. Hockey will never have anything like this, nor should it. You just don’t get thousands of repeated experiements under very similar conditions.

I actually thought Niemi couldn’t be blamed for a few of the Flyers goals (at least early on, especially), while Leighton should have made the save on more of the Hawks goals.

But when it was suggested to him that Toews v. Kane seems likely to become a sidebar to every future international hockey tournament, he smiled and said: "I'd like us to win something together, too."

Who knows for sure, but....

The team has played more confidently and comfortably in front of Leighton than Boucher, all year. It wasn’t just Leighton who was out of whack on Saturday, so you can’t really isolate on him. Another, more interesting, reason would be if there was something up with Leighton’s health, though there’s no reason to think that from what was on TV.

If Leighton has another lousy game and he’s the only one who does, then Boucher might get the call for Game 3, in which case you can start celebrating. The guy bailed us out against the Rangers so thank you thank you Brian but the Devils were by far the worst team in the playoffs and he was in goal for the three losses against Boston (not that they were his fault, but still). Most of us who were grateful to Boucher were thrilled when Leighton was able to get back in. Blackhawks will have an easier time scoring goals against Boucher and the Flyers need every break they can get to win this.

There’s been a lot of talk from analysts about this series having a lot of 4 pt total games. I don’t see it, especially tonight. I see this being more of an 8 pt game, with the Haws hopefully being on top 5-3.

If the Hawks can get pucks on the net, they should be able to figure out Leighton early and pot a couple in the 1st period. He’s big, but slower and not as athletic as Niemi. Look for a lot of "dirty" goals from both teams.

41 comments per day and a fanpost every 10 days- assumes no vacation, holidays etc.

It’s not like you just dash off one-liners like meeshak either. (BTW- where’d he go?)

I don’t see how this doesn’t come up at marriage counseling. Good luck.

no you're right

he was getting frustrated with some of the comments lately, that’s not entirely off-base. But I think part of it is he’s actually been away from the computer more, as opposed to job searching for a bit, getting frustrated, and then spending the rest of the afternoon online.

Weirdos.

You know Flyers.

Richards, Hartnell, Carcillo, etc.

Good team, but weird. You can’t figure out what they do.

I think that the last game is the best they’ve got. Hawks survived it. I hope I’m right.

IMO, Most Amazing Stat of Game 1.

Hawks were down by 1 goal 3 times in the game. SUM TOTAL TIME it took to get back tied was 4 minutes, 57 seconds (1 M, 8 S / 1 M, 38 S / 2 M, 11 S).

Troy is awesome...

One of the intangibles people talk about is heart. Troy has that and then some. His dad does too. I think in some way Troy’s situation helps the team because it brings them together even more. Let’s hope he continues to play inspired hockey and his dad continues to recover.

I'd guess he's probably out for the series

Q’s not going to admit this even if it’s true. Keep the opposition guessing.

If the series continues along the lines of game 1, Kop is a good fill-in. Unfortunately I believe we will see the Flyers try to play a tighter game today and definitely in Philly. Ladd is a much stronger player in that type of game. We’ll make do. As far as injuries go, things could be a lot worse than having Ladd out.

Saturday night I wirnessed Kane absolutely own #20 on a move that took him outside and behind the net.

It took Kaner all game to figure it out, but he did. #20 is brutally slow compared to our little 88, but this is what he has dealt with his whole hockey life. Big guys thinking they can manhandle him. #20 may be the best one he’s faced, but he is on to him. Watch tonight. I’m calling 3 (hattie) for Kane and 4 points for Toews.

Chris, put away the Weber man crush for a few minutes and look at what you are saying.

He’s a fine D man. Yes, he is the best on the Preds.

  1. is still playing for a team that technically should not be here anymore, but here they are. They put up 5 on the Hawks thanks to a mountainous effort from him. He’s a hall of fame type player. Will Weber last this long and at this level? You sure hope so, and most hockey fans do as well. Right now the jury is out on if he will or not. We can talk in 10-15 years and see if he measures up to #20.

Carcillo in

Van Riemsdyk is missing from the forward line list above but it’s possible that Laviolette is going to bench Parent and go with five defensemen.

I guess he figures Carcillo is more useful up front than Danny Syvert as a sixth defenseman. Can’t imagine he’ll give him a regular shift on the top line – he’s just putting him out there for show at the start. In addition to his other liabilities Carcillo’s knee is bugging him. Van Riemsdkyk will provide more effective minutes.

Parent had one of his better games – 41 seconds ice time and only a minus one, and only one stick irretrievably wedged into the boards. In truth we’re better off if he doesn’t have a stick. We’d rather he display honor, sharpen the blade and fall on it, but he’d certainly miss.

Now we get to see what kind of mess Danny Boy makes in his hockey pants. Maybe they’ve dosed him with leprosy to spread to the Hawks during scuffles after the whistle.

by flyersfaninchicago on May 31, 2010 1:52 PM CDT up reply actions

Carcillo's in for Van Piemsdyk

I thought they’d just go with 5 defensemen at first, and bring Carcillo on as an extra, but they ARE going with 6 defensemen tonight, they just swapped Parent out I believe (for Bartulis).

The exact lines might be diff though, the line list came from twitter.

by puppetmasterp on May 31, 2010 2:32 PM CDT up reply actions

Ugh

I’m sure your lines are right if it’s only 12 forwards. JvR has struggled but I would much rather have what he can offer. On the other hand have been hoping Parent would be replaced for some time.

Carcillo can be effective, but he’s an excitable boy and it’s easy to see him making some stupid mistakes.
