That's Not How We Planned It: Canucks Stay Alive, Series Lead Cut To One Game

Well, I guess the Canucks were only mostly dead.  After two solid games for the Blackhawks in Vancouver, the Canucks turned things around masterfully tonight in Chicago.  The Canucks played the damn near perfect road game against the Hawks.   Instead of seeing a march to the box for crosschecking, roughing and general douchebaggery... we saw the Canucks lift sticks, legally work bodies away from the crease and fight off every chance the Hawks could mount.

Not that the Hawks made things all that difficult though.  The Hawks were all too willing to make sure the roles were completely reversed tonight - taking one stupid penalty after another.  Actually, it might not be fair to say all the Hawks were taking penalties.  In reality it was only three, Buff taking back to back penalties in the second, Eager being the moron we all know he can be and Marian Hossa taking two bad penalties of his own... one of which came a mere 4 seconds after Toews' goal, killing any momentum that the Hawks could have been working to build late in the game.  Nice one there Marian.   The only non-repeat offender tonight was Antti Niemi, taking his first ever penalty in the NHL for a hooking call behind his net.

The game obviously started off poorly when Versteeg blindly whipped a puck out of the Hawks zone for an icing call.  We've seen the Hawks get jumpy in their own zone, especially at home, and tonight was more of the same.  Versteeg wasn't the only one guilty of stupidly throwing the puck away tonight.  It just so happens that his move early in the game was directly followed by Niemi oddly stabbing at a shot, allowing Christian Ehrhoff  to open the scoring less than a minute into the game.

Things only got worse as all around turdsniffer Kevin Bieksa was able to net two goals of his own... one of an admittedly nice feed from the Wellwood... another off a screen in front.  Niemi didn't have much of a chance on either.

The Hawks had opportunities to get the game tilting their way but completely lacked the ability to finish any chances they were burying in BC.  They outshot the Canucks 30 to 24 but weren't able to establish the presence in front of Luongo.  This is also directly related to the Hawks trying once again to go for the pretty plays... trying to nail the perfect long pass or stickhandle their way through the Nucks who were effective at keeping the Hawks to the outside.

We got spoiled by the Hawks steamrolling their way through Vancouver.  Despite predicting a long series, we hoped we could see it closed out in 5.  Now we're going to see at least one more Tuesday night.  God help us all if it goes to 7.

Random Observations:

-Credit goes to where it's due.  Roberto Luongo had a game that reminded us of his performance in Game 1.  There were few, if any, rebounds given up.  He didn't exactly steal the game for the Nucks but finally provided a bit of backbone for a team that desperately needed it.  If he keeps that up, the series is going to be all that much harder for the Hawks.

-The Hawks weren't able to take advantage of an already weak defensive core that spent a good amount of time without Sami Salo who left the game after taking a slapshot to the chest, stomach or groin.... hard to say exactly.  VS had footage of him being put into an ambulance and taken away for further testing.  Not having his shot from the blue line and all-around solid play will be a big loss for the Nucks... even if it didn't look like it tonight.  UPDATE:  Looks like it could be the worst case scenario for Salo.. a ruptured testicle.  Fucking A.  I think Keith owes him a beer or something now.

-The Nucks also spent a few shifts with only 4 defensemen after Shane O'Brien was too dumb to realize that a high stick like that should also probably give you a concussion.  Hockey players are tough bastards.. that's for sure.

-We saw some ugly play for the Hawks tonight too.  Dave Bolland showed why the Sedins hate him by giving a pretty nasty slash to Daniel's ankle, taking him out of the game for a while.  Henrik retaliated later and was called for a trip.  It was a pretty cheap shot and a dick move from Bolland.. but lets not act like he's the only player doing it.  He should have been called for it though.  Eager also got in on the act with a slash on Ehrhoff with 13 seconds to go in the game.  If the Hawks are going to be this blatant about it then Toews and Kane will really have to watch out for themselves.

-Speaking of Bolland, he got worked again at the draw going only 2 for 13... Toews won 58% though.  So that's nice.

-See you tuesday folks.

Anyone looking for a new band name? That was a rough game to be at because I had 4 Nucks fans right in front of me and as soon as Salo took that shot the guys behind me started cheering about how badly he got hurt. weird night. 3 players whose playing was slightly off last night, Versteeg, Bolland, Hjalms. Ummmm, what happened to Hossa’s speed? Maybe it was just an off-night but Luongo did look good.

Hey OTF, I hope that you were able to salvage some important belongings during the flood. I was truly shocked when I saw video of how bad you guys were hit down there. I’m not much of a religous man but I actually prayed with other people for the well-being of Nashville residents. I have enjoyed my stays in Nashville and I have talked with other fans that have nothing but positive things to say about the hospitality shown to them in Music City. Had the oppurtunity to talk with Barry Trotz who was at a Chicago Wolves playoff game in 2008. Its easy to see why he is THE man. Smart, friendly, and overall a class act…something to be proud of.

I think the blame for this game goes to...

well, the Canucks. As much as I was blasting the Hawks in the immediate aftermath of the loss, I began to notice that not many of the stats in BC were much in our favor, yet we won. We were outshot (weren’t we?), outhit (for whatever that stat is worth), and outdone at the faceoff dot. We also took penalties in games 3 & 4 and even got scored on.

The difference tonight was the way the Nucks played. Even if the Hawks didn’t come out as on fire as I would have liked, I didn’t think they looked like game 1 either. The Nucks were the better team on the ice tonight. The Hawks need to make some adjustments and add some energy and I think it will turn out well on Tuesday. But Nucks had a good game and played well. Kudos to them. Now, please eliminate them already!

I fart in your general direction. Your mother was a hamster and your father smelt of elderberries.

Agreed

Nucks played great, Lu played great, Hawks played good, not enough.

3rd period was much better than Game 1. Keith to Toews goal was q work of art.

So ends a run that began 8 minutes into game 2.

I’d like to see the Hawks show some of that Game 2 urgency out of the gate tomorrow night.

before this game, after this game

Before the game, I tried posting a message on the pre-game thread (that didn’t take) about how nervous i was going into this game — MUCH more than any other game this series. I just had a bad feeling about it. So at least that’s over with.

But the way I see it, the Hawks were actually doing me a favor, so I could be back in Chicago for at least one game in this series, instead have to watch with a few drunk, old-men, Vancouver fans a few thousands miles away from home.

Which means someone needs to plan an informal meet-up for Tuesday’s game. I can’t b/c I’ll be traveling all day tomorrow, but someone GET ON IT.

Not at all...

They finally have one of the games in this series on TV for me to watch over here, and the Hawks missed the memo that they were back on Central Time, not Pacific.

I figure that has to be the problem, as they were about two hours too late to do a damned thing in the game.

They just seemed to get caught out of position a lot, turned it over fairly regularly during transitions, and gave Luongo good looks at damned near every one of the shots they did put on net.

Most of their shots came from bad angles, so the rebounds that were there were pretty harmlessly sent off towards the corners, and not back in front of the net. They were forced outside, forced to dump, and forced to turn around and play Defense all night.

Lackluster, sleepwalking sort of performance for 50 minutes, then the bad penalty by Hossa…

They need to regroup and show some energy. They looked dead.

Everyone dies. It is the only true and lasting justice in life.

by Billy Charlesbois on May 10, 2010 1:03 AM CDT reply actions

I hate to say it, but tonight's effort was....

LISTLESS

I know that with the sting of defeat lingering is a bad time to critique a game, but I do have some general observations from Game 5. To start…there was just nothing there. I don’t know if that early goal less than a minute into the tilt was what did it or not, but our Hawks looked more interested in having the game come to them instead of getting after it. Did the Hawks receive a memo from the league office to stop screening Luongo, or what? I think he saw everything tonight and he is gonna stop 99.9% of those shots. That and I thought the boys were guilty of being a little too cute, especially on the PP. The second goal is what you get when Hendry and Sopel play together and forget that they are playing together and not with one of the other top 4 defensemen; still I think Niemi has made tougher saves although I was sitting on my ass hundreds of feet away so I could be wrong. Either way, this loss was not on Niemi, or any one player or line for that matter. No, it was not a total meltdown on par with what the Nucks did in games 3 and 4 either. Basically the Canucks played an NHL level game… nothing flashy or remarkable about it, and the Hawks played like it was practice. That has to change in Vancouver or we will all be chewing glass come Thursday.

As an aside I think Q should sit Eager in favor of Brouwer, Bickell or Frazer. That has nothing to do with his penalty at the end of the game; the game was over at that point. Eags is simply not playing well and Brower would be better served finding his game playing any minutes on the fourth line rather than logging a full 60 in the club seats. The ‘Nucks are doubtful to go all Private Pyle in game 6 anyway so there should not be much need for his dissuasive role. Besides, this has not been that type of series and if it goes that way Brower, Bickell and Frazer can hold their own with the added benefit of being much more effective actually playing hockey. Thank you and good night.

The less a man makes declarative statements, the less apt he is to look foolish in retrospect.

Things I think I saw at the game, pending review

Scary thing is Vancouver seems to control the series. What seems to be the case is when Vancouver actually decides to play Hockey (Games 1 and 5) they win. When they decide to play like whiney douchebags, they lose. I’d like to see the Hawks take control with their skill players and be able to out work and out skate Vancouver 5 on 5 forcing them into bad penalties. Didn’t happen. We seemed listless or waiting for Vancouver to cave in because we’re up 3-1. When Vancouver plays hockey, we seem to regress to the fancy pants, don’t try and shoot when a drop pass or low percentage but pretty pass is available game vs. screening, shooting and digging for rebounds.

Kane – I mean he HAS scored so a bit tough to harsh on him, but wouldn’t it be nice if he went to the net and between the circles, waited for the Canucks to go to him and THEN passed to an open man taking the hit for the team vs. skating along the boards and blue line? Kinda like Toews does when he scores hat tricks.

Brouwer is better than Eager – Might not be a bad thing for him to focus on work vs. a very sad situation 24/7 (Before I get sliced up on this one, I lost both parents as I am sure many others have also who have had to work through it all).

Versteeg – Ummmmmm….on even numbered games only maybe? Talk about Jekyll and Hyde.

Hendry – For some reason I never noticed how bad he really is during the regular season. Ughh. And paired with Sopel? How does THAT make sense? Not like Sopel can skate to his rescue.

Hammer – worst game I have seen him play. Usually I think he’s the best defensive D-man on the ice. What happened tonight?

Good Keith/Bad Keith – is he getting worn down?

Hossa? Did he have a good game and get screwed by the refs or did he commit dumb penalties out of frustration? Seemed he was arguing calls a lot today and live action wise it seemed he was right. Have to check the recording on this one.

Madden? Can you ask the wife to loosen the chastity belt just a little bit so you can feel your balls for playoff games?

PP – facepalm again.

Niemi – kind of maddening. Doesn’t let obvious softies go in, but you kind of start hoping the save percentage is a little higher somehow, some way. Not time for a change mind you, but not the “Niemi Says NO” goalie tonight.

Luongo Nice game but what a putz milking every time he was touched or nudged a little bit into a act worthy of the best drama queen. I actually started to believe his pussy really DID hurt a few times.

O’Brien – Too bad. So sad.

Solo – OUCH!

Anyway…I don’t want a 7th game. Let’s do it in 6 boys.

Nite all.

God I hope this series doesn't go to 7

I’ve had enough heart attacks as it is.

This game was terrible. Everybody was bad, except for maybe Johnny. Keith was terrible. Niemi was mediocre. The PP sucked. Eager sucked. Even Hossa was bad tonight. It didn’t seem like anybody was trying and there’s absolutely no excuse for that. It’s the playoffs. Play balls out or pack your shit and go home.

If Vancouver takes the game on Tuesday, watch out. Gotta get it done in game 6.

There were still 59 minutes left to play after that.

The team as a whole lost that game, not one goal at the very beginning. I know that it took some of the wind out of our sails, but come on they had plenty of time to turn it around and it didn’t happen. They need to remember what they did to win games 2, 3, and 4. Get back to that game plan and get the 4th win that we need.

Now, it’s back to Vancouver for a Game 6 we all hoped to avoid. Will the Canucks lose all three games on home ice? Seems damn near impossible, right? Well, it better happen or the Blackhawks will play a coin-toss Game 7 when they had this series by the balls.

I wouldn’t be as worried if we played well but still got the loss. That happens. But the whole team played terribly and deviated from the game plan and that scares me. That and Q’s inevitable line-o-palooza.

I know I was never on the ledge and I might put a foot out there if it does come down to game 7, but really is the outlook that poor after one bad game? We just came off of winning three superbly played games. I plan on watching the rest of the playoffs and supporting my team that has kept me entertained for months.

I went to a fight the other night and a hockey game broke out.

Yeah i do think its

time to throw in the towel…..momentum is a huge factor in the playoffs, and right now the hawks have lost theirs, plus they have to go and play game 6 on the road, and the fact that they took a few bad penalties last game doesnt help either, its called losing their composure…Luongo got hot and basically thats all the canucks need, cause he is better than niemi….im just stating my opinion…..

This is why they play all the games. If you can’t handle it, then don’t watch. You were probably one of those who thought last night was a foregone conclusion. It is the Stanley Cup playoffs. It’s the best hockey you can play. Every team deserves to be there. Vancouver is a good/great team. They may win, but they have to win twice to do so.

I’m on this ride all the way wherever it goes. I’ve been here all my life. Watching the Hawks is exciting, to say the least. Enjoy it, whatever happens.

According to no less an authority than

by Powrfwd37 on May 10, 2010 7:53 PM CDT up reply actions

Still on that I see

I guess Luongo should just admit the Hawks are a better team and let them win? Come on. He has to say things like that he is the captain. The Hawks packed their bags for Vancouver and included enough clothes to head straight to San Jose if they win tomorrow. I could make a big deal out of that but it’s meaningless. Just something you have to do as an NHL team.

I'm with you completely...

The momentum thing was/is a reply to the “OMG, they’ve lost the momentum – its a train wreck” set.

I tend to agree with the idea that momentum is one thing IN-Game, but another entirely from game to game.

We’re still up 3-2, with a damned good hockey team on the ice.

As for Luongo needing to say it because he’s the Captain… It’s one of the few hockey smart things I’ve been made aware of him saying as the team’s Captain.

Typically, he leads from the ice, rather than the front.

by Powrfwd37 on May 10, 2010 8:11 PM CDT up reply actions

His leadership is a question

for Canuck fans. I wish he wasn’t captain. He has enough to worry about as it is.

Momentum is big in hockey but it swings from game to game period to period even shift to shift. To act like one game will affect the next is ridiculous.

I think at times confidence and momentum are interchanged

The Nucks have a lot more confidence going into Game 6 now than Game 4 or 5, while the Hawks surely have a little less after Game 5. The Hawks have to over come that, and destroy it and win. While this is not momentum, some people may refer to this aspect as just that.

I'm not so much about momentum shifts like you have stated game to game

But Confidence, that is a different beast. When a player loses it, it can be hard to get back, it has destroyed many athletes careers.

That being said, I do not see one or two games enough to shake the Confidence in either team, they are all professionals (well, most are) this shit will roll off their chest. Game 6 will be its own game, separate from the other 5. The key of game 6 in this regards is to get questions of confidence in the heads of the other guy (making them work too hard) and not losing your own (keeping on your game). This may be effected by previous games performance, but should not directly carry over to another game.

Steady as she goes

It’s tough, but let’s step back and get some perspective on this:

1.On the Fifth Feather’s recap, they said that’s it’s pretty damn difficult to win 4 straight games in the playoffs. Agree completely.

2. At the start of the series, overwhelming feeling was it would be 6 or 7 games. After dropping Game 1, I think most of us were leaning towards 7 games.

3. Likewise, I think most of us had Luongo penciled in to steal a game or two in the series. While he wasn’t outright brilliant last night, the Hawks never forced him to be, and this is the expected result when he gets to see every shot that comes his way.

4. The Hawks haven’t skunked 3 consecutive games yet, for that matter, even 2 of them.

5. The Hawks still have plenty of players who have proven they can get it done it crunch time and clutch situations.

6. They still lead the series 3-2.

Look, there’s no question that they’ve lost the momentum, and another win in Vancouver is going to be pretty tough to manage. But it’s the playoffs, no one said it was going to be easy. If the Canucks play a trappier game again Tuesday, the Hawks SHOULD be able to channel the type of game they played against Nashville and get their chances. We all would have liked a win last night, but hey, sometimes you eat the bear, and sometimes the bear eats you.

I think the Hawks are a better road team. We’ve been outright dominant in road games, while have mostly shit the bed or have had to make some pretty great comebacks (see, e.g., Game 5 and Game 2) to win at home. It really is mind-boggling. Niemi, Versteeg, Eager, Hossa...

Those guys did not play well and a few others also. Niemi looked tired, that second goal he was slow getting to. Is going to his left with the pads that much more difficult than going to his right? First goal should not have happened but it was just one of those things.

Hossa played like crap, stupid penalties and not much else. Versteeg was back to his normal game giving up the puck as if it were a hand grenade. I don’t think he can make more than 2 or 3 moves without losing the puck! And the way he passes blindly is ridiculous. Bring back Brouwer and sit Eager, he brings nothing but a big body and not much skill.

This was a team loss regardless. The Hawks had their moments but it was one and done in the shot department, missed the net way too much and were also trying to be too cute in the passing game. Niemi needs to be better to start the game regardless, he’s played well but we need better, not Huet though please, just a better game from Niemi. I hope he’s not worn out but it’s quite possible he is.

Reality check

Well, so much for riding a wave of unstoppable momentum into the conference finals. Now that we’ve had our shit handed to us for the second time in the series on home ice, what have we learned?

1. It’s not the first goal, it’s the second one. Niemi has to make that save in the first minute, but after that his mates have got to get that goal back for him somehow. Luongo was good, and we missed an open net (Buff?).
2. The Hawks, after splitting the first two games with the Preds, have developed a pattern of losing one, winning three straight, then losing again. Let’s hope the pattern holds.
3. I like the fact that the Hawks have won two road games in both series so far. Of course, defending the home ice along with that would be helpful.
4. The only criticism I have about last night that’s worth a damn is to say the game plan didn’t look at all like what was used in BC. Can the approach to a home game possibly be that different than a road game?

The wrap had it right…we all expected this to be a long series, and it’s going to be. I want this thing over as soon as possible, but if we can survive and advance along with having learned the lesson of not taking your foot off the gas, then the loss last night was a useful one.

I feel bad for Salo. How ironic is it that a guy who’s a teammate of Burrows gets one of his balls damaged? That’s one less teammate to offer one for a transplant….

I don't know how long you've been a Canucks fan

but if you’ve been around as long as the Sedins have been playing, do you mind helping me prove myself wrong or right by listing their linemates since they arrived in the NHL?

But when it was suggested to him that Toews v. Kane seems likely to become a sidebar to every future international hockey tournament, he smiled and said: "I'd like us to win something together, too."

Well they've played with a lot of guys

Trent Klatt, Anson Carter, Steve Bernier, Taylor Pyatt and lot’s more including Mikael Samuelsson at times this season. They clearly played a role in Burrows increased production this year. No one would argue against that. But don’t discount the role Burrows has had in helping the Sedins take it to another level. Burrows fits in well on that line.

What does it tell you

…when a guy who scored 35 goals is noted more for his level of asshattery than he is for scoring 35 goals? Or from your perspective, what kind of numbers would he put up if he wasn’t spending so much time in the box?

He could score 50….he’d still be a douchebag. A highly paid one, but a douchebag all the same.

On the ice he may be a douchebag

that doesn’t make him a douchebag. I personally don’t know him and I suspect you don’t either. He is known more for his “asshattery”? Maybe he is. I really don’t care, I suspect he wouldn’t be the same player if he wasn’t playing at or over the edge a lot of the time. He’s certainly not as bad as Ruutu or Cooke in terms of biggest douches to have played for the Canucks recently. And neither one of those guys could score 35 goals in a season if they were playing with Gretzky and Lemieux.

Win three games on the road

Only a statistic. Like always winning elimination games. The Hawks continue to show a bi-polar attitude. Ledge lingerers after losses, tempters of the gods after wins. Expect a solid effort Tuesday. Should come out flying. See how Lou handles the pressure.

I don’t see the hawks enjoying their home ice advantage. i’m tired of watching them suck ass when the chips are down at home, it’s like they can’t handle the pressure of being a 2 seed. they just can’t seem to keep that swagger going for more than two games at a time.

by ChewyLemonHeadsAndFriends on May 10, 2010 8:10 AM CDT via mobile reply actions

My observations

Hawks could have played better.

It is the playoffs and they are not laying ST. Louis or Columbus. These are the best teams in the league. They will not lay down, ever. You have to bring the game every minute, or you will get beaten.

Niemi was not ready. Kane was not ready. Madden, Ladd, etc.

Eager and Burish on the ice at the same time is like giving the other team 6-9 minutes of power play. Does Burish actually do anything resembling hockey? Does Eager ever not fumble the puck< except when in the box?

Please let our boy Troy play. Get either Burish or Eager off the ice and move Kopecky to 4th line.

Finally, 1st shot low, and reap the benefits.

while he wasn't fabulous,

I don’t think it’s quite fair to lump Burish in with Eager. Eager takes stupid penalties and gets distracted by the shininess of Luongo’s beardless face. Burish at least got to the net several times, unlike many others last night.

Burish

Eager is a waste of time.

Fraser, Madden, Kops 4th line. Fraser may not be highly skilled, but he plays pretty good positional hockey. I guess Burish does too and he is coming off a bad knee op, but he’s not helping this team right now.

Bring Troy back. He needs it and so does his team.

Eager and Burish on the ice at the same time is like giving the other team 6-9 minutes of power play.

I’ve been telling people that this has been the elephant in the room, lost in the good feeling of the Game 3 and 4 wins. Seems like every time I see that line out there, they’re stuck in their own zone for 30-45 seconds, and half the time end up taking an icing. When your 4th line is out there to essentially try to play the other guys to a push, and maybe get a little sustained pressure, their performance has been an overwhelming fail. They’re hemorrhaging scoring chances right now, and the Canucks have enough depth to take advantage of them no matter what line they have out. I thought this is exactly what Madden was supposed to be brought here to minimize.

it was the follow through on a shot

the only real question ws whether OBrien was bent down into it – or whether he was upright enough to make Buf unduly reckless with the follow through. I think it was a correct “no call” but wouldn’t have been down on the refs if it had been called. Of course, they went and gave Buf 2 penalties right afterwards on some marginal stuff – sort of like make up calls

Couple observations

-Enough with the “one of these days Hossa is going to explode for 12 points in a game” talk. Aside from his penalties and backchecking, he’s been relatively invisible all playoffs in the offensive zone; not good when he’s supposed to be one of the best snipers in the league.

-I don’t think it’s a surprise that Toews and Buff are having big series’ b/c Vancouver seems intent on shutting down Kane, which they are doing, at least in terms of goal scoring.

-Niemi has been painfully average this series, aside from a great right pad in one period a couple games ago. I’d like a return to Niemi no-no form for one of these last 2 games.

-Campbell has been very active as of late, and I like what I’m seeing from him.

-Yes, he’s a 6th D-man, but Hendry doesn’t even fit that bill, at least against a team of this caliber.

-For all the talk about how Eager and Burish bring “energy” and “grit” to the team, they sure do nothing on the ice in their 4-5 minutes of ice time per game. I will take a distracted Brower over either of those guys every day of the week and twice on Sunday, especially on the 4th line. They just don’t bring anything to the table, as evidenced by their ridiculous lack of ice time.

by illinikc33 on May 10, 2010 9:55 AM CDT reply actions

More Observations...

Hossa has been up and down all series. He’s had his moments of being unstoppable along the boards and also with his fore checking, but he also needs to score some goals as well. I don’t know if he’s with the wrong linemates or what, he can be spectacular at times and then he disappears.

Campbell has been excellent, Hendry very so so.

Kane needs to quit fiddling around with the puck, either pass it or shoot it. I don’t mind him holding the puck on the power play but the problem is no one is getting open for the pass, though they did have some great opportunities last night, unfortunately they either missed the net or shot it directly into Lu’s breadbasket.

I don’t mind Burrish but Eager needs to sit regardless.

by CaptDirk on May 10, 2010 10:08 AM CDT up reply actions

Hossa - well, one wrong linemate lately

I don’t know if everyone is expecting what Hossa will bring. He’s basically a point a game guy (whinch he has largely been with the Hawks) who is good along the boards, good on the PK, and superb defensively.

I think we’ve seen that to a large degree. This playoff set, he’s had more assists and fewer goals, but he is performing close to pace. He is a rather subtle sniper.

Confusion will be my epitaph.

I just REALLY want him to get the

I’m Marion Fucking Hossa and you’re not play back for a game here. We have too many damn good forwards when we play well to look like shit. If they ARE targeting him or his line and THAT’S why he’s “subtle”, then dammit the 1st 3rd and 4th line should kick some ass…….especially with Solo needing a ball sling for a while.

by husler777 on May 10, 2010 10:49 AM CDT up reply actions

I think Kopecky has looked good on that line, and he seems to have the chemistry with Hossa that we hoped he would have when he came over to the Hawks. He may not be one of our top six forwards, but he’s good role player on the second line. He’s definitely playing his best hockey of the year.

by warrenjm2006 on May 10, 2010 10:14 AM CDT up reply actions

I agree he's looked decent

But I feel like anyone can have chemistry with Hossa; the way he plays creates chances for his linemates.

It’s more that I had Kop on a short leash, and last night I lost count of how many times he slipped or made a mistake with his stick and ended up coughing up the puck in the offensive zone and killing whatever momentum Hossa and Sharpie had created.

He was losing board battles by the boatload last night, whereas in Games 3 and 4 I think he actually had some net presence or something resembling at times (I know it’s not his game but he picked up a couple rebounds and one of them became a goal).

by VerStig on May 10, 2010 10:21 AM CDT up reply actions

Agreed

Kop is a 3rd or 4th liner in my book. This has been discussed in the past and it’s still my contention that there just isn’t much chemistry between he and Hossa. Kop’s play has improved since February, no doubt. However, I still don’t see him as a top 6 guy.

Kopecky has played decently I think.

Who do you want on that line? Madden? Ladd? Versteeg? Eager? Burrish? Buff? Maybe Brouwer, but he’s somewhere with Johnssan apparently. Bickell? Not a whole lot of steady performances there. I think Kopecky is a good role player there, he tries to screen in front and does dig the corners. Frankly a little more breakout from our Horse and maybe a little sharper shooting from the shooter would help more than putting someone in for Kopecky.

Great recap

Not the worst game I’ve seen from the Hawks, even though the score looked like it most of the way through. There were too many times where the Hawks had good looks and went blocker side instead of glove side.

Although Luongo did look good tonight, and he definitely had better positioning, I thought he did give up some juicy rebounds. Unlike in the last couple of games where the rebounds ended up on Buff’s Toews’s stick, the rebounds all flew through traffic to the sideboards.

I don’t know if the Canucks can continue to lift sticks and be that settled back in Vancouver. They looked like they took a deep breath before they did anythign on the road, and any extra adrenaline would have cost them a mistake.

my thoughts.....if you care......I'm not even sure that I do

-I don’t remember everything about last year’s game 3 against the Nucks, but from what I do remember, this game was pretty similar. Vancouver played a tight game, buried the few good chances that they had, and didn’t let the Hawks get into the game until it was late in the 3rd period. Same final score, 3-1.

-Why O why does Buff only “bring it” in Vancouver. He got the loudest ovation from the home crowd that he’s gotten all year, maybe in his Hawk career, and he laid an egg in this game. He wasn’t alone, but still.

-I’m a big time Hoss-apologist, but please, stay out of the box and bury a couple chances in Game 6.

-I can’t make a post without ripping steeg….it’s just my job……That icing was outrageously bad, like, maybe he thought he was on the kill bad. As has been mentioned, the steeg-bollie-ladd line was terrible last night. If those three don’t play better in Game 6, we’re in trouble.

-For all you believers in momentum, I’d be alot more comfortable with the direction this series is headed if we would’ve lost game 4 and won game 5 than what actually happened.

-Let’s break their hearts in BC.

Ditto for CNS

The best thing Vancouver can do to stop Buff isn’t to take cheap shots (that turn into penalties) it’s to just limit their penalties. Buff looked good in Vancouver because there was a lot of power play time, whereas in Chicago the Nucks were more disciplined and he didn’t have as many opportunities to play his role.

by Scott13 on May 10, 2010 12:02 PM CDT up reply actions

Good point

Maybe that’s why he looked so good in Game 4. I can’t remember how much he was in front of the net at even strength but he was constantly there on the PP.

by VerStig on May 10, 2010 12:26 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah, PP is where he makes his money

but when you’re on a line with Kane and Toews, you have to play a solid game at even strength as well, everyone on the team would love to play with those two.

Really good recap

hit almost all the points I had in mind. I’ll just add two things:

- nice coaching job by AV, especially right after I said they should consider making a change in the offseason. The Nucks played a smart defensive game that the Hawks were never able to adjust to, keeping 5 guys behind the puck whenever possible and switching up the d-zone responsibility. Not sure if this was the plan all along, or whether the early lead afforded them the opportunity, but it clearly worked to the Vancouver coaching staff’s favor.

- how could the Hawks not adjust? The adjustment they needed to make was to get the puck to the net and crash, since the ice surface was shit and the Canucks were hellbent on preventing any highlight reel goals. So the same Blackhawks team that scored all 5 goals in blue collar fashion in game 3 never seemed to recognize the fact that the same strategy would be absolutely necessary. You can’t blame the Hawks coaching staff for that, they were lamenting the “pretty play” during the second intermission interview with Foley and Edzo. It was just painful to watch everyone except the guys in the red sweaters figure it out.

by Scott13 on May 10, 2010 12:08 PM CDT reply actions

I thought all they had to do

was pretend they were playing Nashville and they could’ve locked things down… I wonder if the Canucks will come out with the same game plan tomorrow

I’ve found the officiating brutal both ways. That’s not whining, that’s just my observation. And it’s been my observation for the entire playoffs. Brutal officiating seems to be the order of the day.

If you are saying there is “whining” about being pissed over Eager’s antics yesterday…well…gooning it up in the last 30 seconds of a decided loss is pretty bush league…and that goes both ways.

I’m not sure why you’d defend Eager’s actions. To be honest, as a Canucks fan, I hope Eager plays 10+ minutes on Tuesday. Keep him out there.

In London, he was a ridiculously selfish player who just floated around in the defensive zone looking for the next offensive rush and the ability to pad his stats. Drove me nuts. Just have never been a fan.

If you hang around this blog for a couple weeks

You’ll see that references to Kaner are very frequently accompanied by the word “lazy” in some form. Definitely happened a couple times last night. It’s a joke, but there is some truth in it.

That said, his backchecking (yes, there is some, even if it isn’t much) effort is much better than what it was last year… so there is some hope.

by VerStig on May 10, 2010 4:48 PM CDT up reply actions

The Sedins are also

8 years older than Kane. When he’s 30, I hope to see his game be more well-rounded. the improvement even in the last year has been impressive, and spending the next 5-11 years with Hossa can only help that.

by Katherine215 on May 10, 2010 5:24 PM CDT up reply actions

THANK YOU, Katherine...

I was looking to see if anyone was going to bring up either of the two points I wanted to make.

That’s one of them… The Sedins SHOULD be better defensively than Kaner. They’ve been playing in the NHL for a little while longer now.

The other is that Kaner has shown improvement each year, in fulfilling his responsibilities to the team, defensively.

I will echo what someone else said.. Kane will never be a Selke finalist, but responsibility in your own end is one of those things that a lot of great offensive players take some time to develop in the NHL. Your great players play equally responsibly at both ends from the beginning – Rumor is that Johnny Toews might be that kind of guy.

I hated Kane in the OHL too. Mainly because he fuckin’ torched the 67’s everytime he played in Ottawa it was amazing.

He was clearly better than everyone else on the ice and has super mad skills but never appeared to be floating nor gloating. The celebrations were at times excessive but they all are at that level. Fuck, I’ve seen many 67’s use the Rob Brown windmill after they scored, it’s just they way it can be at the OHL level. Just kids trying to make it into the NHL nothing more, nothing less.

I love it when people can assume someone’s personality based upon an interview or apparent on-ice conduct and act like they “know” them.

I was feeling pretty bummed last night, and just now getting onto SCH

because I did not want to be reminded of it……….again.

I know I was very pessimistic about the rest of the series. I’m a Cubs fan, I remember 1984 and 2003 where the Cubs needed only 1 win in three to get to the World Series, and I felt the same was happening here.

But, the 2009-2010 Chicago Blackhawks are NOT the 1984 or 2003 Chicago Cubs

This team is full of grit, determination, and confidence that lacked on those teams. This team has fought this fight before, and knows what it takes to win.

So what do we have to look forward to?
I expect the Hawks to come out, like they have fire coming out of their assess.
I expect the Hawks to have more Rubber on Luongo, we will never have to worry about him pro-creating again
I expect the Hawks to take the ice, and make the Canucks be stupid in trying to take it back.
I do not expect the Hawks to play desperate, but force the Canucks to do so.

Game 6 is there for the Hawks to win or lose, not the Canucks. If the Hawks want it, they can take it, the Canucks can not take it away from them. I think tomorrow we see the Hawks we are used to, and they move on leaving no doubt they are the better team.

I think if both

teams play to the best of their abilities it is a bounce here or there that decides the game. I don’t think there is that much to choose between the two teams when they are playing their best. It hasn’t happened yet in this series though when both teams play their best. No OT yet either. I think that might all change in game 6 and I hope Luongo plays like he has on the road in this series and the Canucks find a way to win it. If they don’t I won’t be too mad though as the better team will win this series one way or the other.

Stop the 1984 Cubs crap!

I sat in my dorm room absolutely catatonic after they decided it was a good idea to pitch to Garvey rather than Nettles. Nettles was one of my boyhood idols with the Yankees, but he was past his prime. I have never felt the same about the Cubs since. I went through the Rick Reuschel / Steve Swisher / Steve Onteveros years! Dave Kingman for Christ’s sake. I waited. The daily double. Jodi Davis. Keith Moreland. The Sarge. Sut. Eck. Harry in his Cubs Prime. Van Halen. I was 17 years old.

I’m 43 and I’m still pissed.

Then the same bullshit with Prior and Wood. Sammy Sosa what an ass. I refuse to watch that team anymore. I have a lifetime of good memories even in from the "70’s. However, they will most likely never win and if they don’t get rid of the poison that is their manager soon, it’s a certainty.

Enough of the Cubs!

The Blackhawks have been very competitive through most of my life and been to the finals a few times. I feel bad for Savard, Larmer, and Wilson, but it’s not their fault Edmonton came in to the league when it did. Pulford and Rocky’s dad really screwed them after Roenick left, but we are way past that now. Yeah they let Bobby Hull go. It’s not like they didn’t want to sign him though. He left (I would have taken the $$ also).

There is NO comparison between the 1984 Cubs and 2010 Blackhawks. You can all go to Hell if you bring it up again.

- John Madden has been M.I.A. for too long now and has never shown to be much of anything useful to this team. Leadership? Haven’t seen much it, if at all. Penalty Killing? Meh, sometimes great (Game 5 in OT) sometimes dreadful (Game 4 the other night). Defensively responsible? -2 during the regular season (only Buff was worse at a -7) and a -4 in the playoffs. Fraser over Madden for Game 6 perhaps?

- Antti Niemi has to be better than his 2.71 GAA has shown. He hasn’t been very good since Game 4 of the Nashville series as he’s allowed 23 GA in the last 7 games. Not to reassuring is it? Game 6 has to be his “bounce back game” or the ’Hawks may find themselves in a Game 7 with a possible goaltending dilemma at the worst time of the year.

- The Bolland-Versteeg-Ladd line was atrocious last night after 3 games of shear brilliance. One dumbfucking play after another that led to the first goal and the second goal as well. Must have left their brains in Vancouver.

- WE WILL WIN GAME 6!!!

I hope nobody shipped them back to Chicago, and they will just collect them when they get to Vancouver

I'd be a little antsy about Fraser over Madden on the PK

but that’d be my only complaint about that move. I don’t see it happening, though.

by VerStig on May 10, 2010 5:02 PM CDT up reply actions

I agree

I like the way he’s been pressuring in the offensive zone during the PK. I like it when we spend time over there on the kill.

I don't completely disagree on Madden's impact lately

but Q will not scratch him. I’d like to see Brouwer and/or Frazz on a wing next game, somewhere.

All that being said, I think there is way to much angst around here (you, me, a lot of people) about who is being subbed in and out of our fourth line (guys playing all of 7 minutes). Bottom line: Our 5 on 5 scoring HAS to get better on our top 3 lines, or we may lose the series.

Ditto for CNS

what are the chances Salo plays game 6?

and all those questions relating to that. Aaron Rome? give me 60 mins of that D corps and the Nucks will be using injuries as their excuse to the second round exit tomorrow night (i swear it is absolutely that simple).

I'll disagree on Madden

While I haven’t seen him play like he did in the early part of the season, I still see him backchecking like nobody’s business. He was there to stop Soupy from a stupid fight. He’s on the PK and does a hell of a job if you ask me. I don’t care what his +/- is, I think he’s a very important player overall.

Agreed

He has been quiet on the score sheet, but filling his role great. Hammer does not have huge numbers, but has been key to the Hawks as well. Madden is doing what has been asked of him, and if you have not really noticed him, he has not been making those big mistakes on the ice which is perfect.

Let the sky fall if you want it to.

I’ve only see a trend where when Nemo plays a terrible game, he comes back and plays tough as nails. And if you don’t think he played bad last night, just look at the first two goals. He missed a routine glove save, and couldn’t get his glove down for a shot that never left the ice.
Never easy to win on the road, especially after a loss. But I’m lookin at the Hawks road record this post season, and well, I kinda like it. 4-1 ain’t so bad, and 2-0 against the Nucks sounds pretty nifty too. Momentum is key, but it isn’t everything. They won a Game 6 against Nashville last round, and they played us real hard.
If the boys come out and play their game, they win Game 6. Recent history proves that.

I almost forgot I can't afford the bleach that turns collars from blue to white...but I never liked the collar white anyways.

I missed the entire GDT and post game

and im not going to review a few thousand posts

Is the consensus here that the Hawks totally sucked last night? Honestly, three glaring issues i saw: The faceoff fucking sucked, Stoopid penalties, some bad passing in the defensive zone. Gotta give Borat credit, he didnt give up many rebounds, and the nucks did keep themselves out of the box. I didnt think it was terrible, they put a lot of pucks on net, moved the puck well on the PP etc, to me it seemed like there are a few things that need improvement, but otherwise it was kind of a “shit happens” game. Lu was good, and honestly after two, i thought the score could have gone either way if he wasnt so sharp last night.

Talk about not having any pressure on you in the playoffs....

The #8 seed.

They’re expected to be the “fluff” team for the top seed’s playoff run.

They have no pressure whatsoever, and a H O T goaltender in Halak.

Its easy to play like you’ve got nothing to lose, when you’re not supposed to be here.

That game they played was fucking amazing

I know I’ve seen this kind of heart from the ‘Hawks before. I know they’ve pulled it out in this year’s playoffs, but there better be more where that came from!

by VerStig on May 10, 2010 10:04 PM CDT up reply actions

LoL...

I think at this point you can throw in a dash of confidence, and call it a well mixed recipe for success.

Sindy and the boys are definitely on the ropes, and the pressure is squarely on them.

Man… Is this the best playoff hockey that’s been played across the board, in years or what?

It would really be better for our hearts, if they were good and all others sucked this year.

For the duration of this playoff run, crank up the hooliganism, and SCH like behavior by one tiny little notch each, for me. LoL

Most people I’m surrounded by are originally from the South, and/or just don’t understand the game. They don’t get it. The only sensible people (I can’t believe I’m typing this) are the Canadian forces that are here, and another few people that I play ball hockey with here three times a week.

Drink ONE more shot or one more beer each, yell one db louder each, for the 2 Hawks fans that can’t do it with you!!!

by VerStig on May 10, 2010 9:44 PM CDT up reply actions

Lacrosse is fun...

and it adds the challenge of keeping your head er.. stick up. Aside from that, its only about 1/3 of the sport that Hockey is…

Your feet don’t really do anything differently than you’ve been doing since you were 12 months old, and it has all that nice cushiony grass to land on when you get hit!

That ball hurts when it hits you

I was roomates 1/2 of the MSU (Spartan) Lacrosse team in college. It;s not 1/2 the game hockey is. It’s like soccer with sticks and a small ball to me.
