Daydream Nation goes platinum

So the parade and rally featured Mayor Daley predictably mispronouncing names, Kris Versteeg bustin' ill flowz, Duncan Keith looking like Lemmy Kilmister of Motörhead, Dustin Byfuglien giving away wrestling belts, plenty of bad cabbie jokes....and about two million people. The sweaty, drunk, delirious masses gathered down in the loop today to be presented the greatest trophy in sports, courtesy of your Men of Four Feathers. I never thought I'd see the day, but I'm fucking glad I now have.

And I spoke too soon in the previous post, I was able to get down to the parade, as Sam, my sister, and The Professor staked out a spot in a parking garage on Washington. Here's the footage. Apologies for turning the camera away from the Cup as I was banging on the plexiglass. Note Sopel with the can of cheap beer. Busch Light? Bud Light? Miller Light? Keystone Light? You can take the boy out of Canada.....

Anyway, Sam and Kills are at the Bottom Lounge now, and I'll be there as soon as I get out of work, and you should too.

Kim Johnnson, anyone?

I posted this on the previous thread…any news on the whereabouts of Kim Johnsson, because now I’m starting to believe he IS dead. No mention of him during the rally. Even the rostered players who were at Rockford were onstage. But no Johnsson? Hmmm…methinks that maybe there was something to the rumors about being a bad teammate?

Also, TrixieTrix pointed out that there was no mention of Dale Tallon, which I also found unfortunate.

Great day at the parade though, but what a goddamn zoo that was!

And as I said in the previous thread, and numerous times before

Highly, highly unlikely. Every team has this sorta thing swirl around- the Flyers did earlier in the year.

He’s had a history of concussions, this one might have been bad.

Exactly

I didn’t believe the rumors, and could totally understand someone with medical issues not being out in that heat with all that noise, etc., but to not even mention his name was a little odd I thought.

At least I saw on the Blackhawks site that Madden had a shout out to Tallon for bringing him here. It would have been classy to at least mention the team that he was instrumental in forming.

The sun never sets on a badass

I think Dale Tallon should have been mentioned

Kim Johnsson, a rental guy that was here for 3 games? Meh.

The minor leaguers figure to be the bottom line (or 2) and 6th D next year – and were traveling with the team for the last couple of weeks.

Confusion will be my epitaph.

by krome on Jun 11, 2010 1:42 PM CDT up reply actions

Agreed

I was very disappointed that Tallon got no mention. He is the true architect of this team and, ironically will be the reason some of it has to be dismantled. However, it is a win now and don’t worry about next year era in sports and he got it done. Kudos to Dale Tallon.

Kim Johnsson…irrelevant.

That's because BSH turned into a borderline tabloid over the course of the series

I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again. I think Travis is a great hockey writer. In fact, his article on SB Nation about what it feels like to watch your team lose the Cup live and in-person was one of the better reads of the season for me.

Unfortunately, he and the rest of BSH got so caught up in trying to be TMZ-Hockey that their blog has become hard to read.

trying to be TMZ-Hockey

TMZ-Hockey is the perfect way to describe it. Damn, I wish I could be eloquent like that.

And I agree with you about the Travis’ article on “losing the Cup live and in person.” Thought so much of it that I almost posted over there. Couldn’t figure out how to start that comment, though, without causing a flame war. All I could come up with was “Hey Travis, I think you and that Geoff guy are a couple of assholes but that was a really well written post…” :)

I am going to DD homes and retirement homes and they are mostly on the southwest side of town… Sounds like fun, right?

OK, yet another media fail moment

In my search for video of the parade I found this.

If you click on the video titled “you stay classy Kaner” there is moment where the covering broadcaster says, “look at Kane with these two girls, I bet they’re posting that picture on their facebook wall!”

I bet they are you idiot, probably under “pictures with family”

Happens every year

EVery sports championship in every city brings out a bunch of goons who just want to riot and cause trouble. Unfortunately Chicago is no exception.

Signs however I will never get. They are rarely creative or funny and pretty much only serve to block someones view.

"For the kid that was there in 1992 who was crying when I came off the ice after we lost game 4 in Chicago Stadium... you waited 18 years... I hope you have a big smile on your face."

that is true...

but Hjammered had an AWESOME sign that I will post…eventually. It was double-sided: one had Keith’s “to-do” list, and the other simply thanked the Blackhawks for the happiest day of her life. One of the people on the first bus (not a player but one of the staff, I think) actually pointed to her sign, yelling “THIS!! THIS!!!” and cheering. It was great.

I was on Wacker west of Michigan, about thirty or so feet back from some van that had a bunch of kids on top of it. I could see the TV fine and even the stage from time to time, but I’m pretty tall. My wife and I got there about 9AM, thinking we’d be a lot closer but I guess that’s Chicago for you.

It was pretty unpleasant and I thought for a while I might pass out – for some reason, I thought wearing the jersey would be a good idea – but I’m sure as hell glad I got to be there.

by illinikc33 on Jun 11, 2010 8:15 PM CDT reply actions

Well, as far as SCH goes

I assume there’s a Live From the Five Hole forthcoming, along with a whole slew of season review material (it’ll be nice to give each player his due, not knowing if they’ll all be around next year) that our alkies will feed us slowly so we don’t suffer too badly from withdrawal. The new bad word starts with a C.

I propose that we set up a thread to discuss some kind of SCH post/comment “best of” series. Not sure what the best way to do it is, but what I was thinking was separate posts for best posts, comments, ’shop jobs, and videos. We should discuss them first so that we can call upon the collective memory of the community.

by VerStig on Jun 11, 2010 10:27 PM CDT up reply actions

I know the Hawks have to go to NYR, NJD,NYI or BOS next season

And I’ll be at, at least one of those games (probably NYR since they played at BOS, NYI and NJD his season).

Abso-Fucking-lutley

I’m hoping it is at NYR. I have never been to MSG, and is actually easier to get to, just catch a train in CT to Grand Central, walk from there (unless it is -28 degrees).

And besides, who can pass up a chance to throw something in New York’s face, especially a big shinny trophy!

Yeah that would be best for me, obviously

Although, NJD is easy to get to as well — once you’re here, it’s a quick train ride to Newark and the Prudential Center is right next to the station. Not sure how to get to Nassau Coliseum but after hearing what it’s like, I don’t know if I want to even go there…

by VerStig on Jun 12, 2010 8:32 PM CDT up reply actions

NC is crap

I drive by NJD fairly often, right off 95. Just a bit longer of a trip, and the GWB, ughhhh.

For that reason exactly.

That would be one section up behind me.

I looked through all the photos I took from the game, but the only Stadium wide photos I got were before the game, just after gates opened for a panoramic of the Stadium. All others were of the game. Was kinda hoping perhaps I had a shot of you guys.

Perhaps this year, you can be in town for another Hawks game, and SCH can take over some territory!

We boarded the El at Lake & Ashland, looking like fucking tourists trying to figure out the dynamics of getting a card so we could ride. Awesome time, just awesome. First time on the El, first time at Millennium Park, Shedd Aquarium, Museum of Science & Industry, and of course the parade and rally. I only wish I dropped in on “The Bottom Lounge”. Especially after this playoff run

As arguably our steadiest forward (I can only count one game where he was less visible, yet I still saw a ton of hustle in that game), it’d be hard to make a case for not keeping him.

Over at Nucks Misconduct they had a rather intriguing scenario where we lost a bunch of guys (Bolland, Sharpie, Soupy among them) but got to keep a lot of others (like Versteeg, Buff, Ladd). Hamhuis-Hjalmarsson was the second pairing (Hammer-Hammer, heh). I don’t think it’s going to happen, but it was an interesting idea (I think it was Section 312’s), considering the guys who stayed were the ones I’ve seen as most likely to leave.

I still want to check on more data (projected salary for Hammer, Neimi, etc....)

But using a rough figures, with pay raises for those involved I have this as a possible team for starters next season.
Est Cap. 58,600,000
Bonus 1,300,000

Roster
Marian Hossa RW
Patrick Sharp RW
Patrick Kane RW
Dave Bolland C
Dustin Byfuglien RW
Jonathan Toews C
Troy Brouwer LW
Ben Eager RW
Adam Burish D
Brian Campbell D
Duncan Keith D
Niklas Hjalmarsson D
Jordan Hendry G
Antti Niemi RW
Jack Skille D
Michael Brennan G
Corey Crawford D
Danny Richmond C
Jacob Dowell LW
Bryan Bickell C
Kyle Beach C

13 FWDS
6 D-Men
2 Goalies

Est Salary/Bonus: $55,731,337
Room: $2,868,663

This is early workings still, really just guessing in potential raises, and market values and the market itself (fortunately loaded with Defensemen and Goalies) and Huet hating life in the AHL (he will clear waivers).

I feel like Hjammer is the most important guy to keep out of any of the FAs, but the figures I’ve seen are all over the place. I think it was C&B where they said we could give him an offer sheet in the $1.5~1.6mm range, but I’ve also seen $3-$4mm per year thrown out there. So, I’m confused.

But I think Buff will be harder to move/less return, and the Hawks may have 2nd thoughts as well.

I do not want to see any of these guys go! But………………………..Cap Space must be made!

Agreed. Sell high on Buff after his antics in the playoffs.

Top-notch first pair D-men don’t grow on trees, and we know that Seabs’n’Keith have chemistry. We can monkey around some at F on the cheap with Rockford guys.

by spokeinthebandwagon on Jun 13, 2010 10:22 PM CDT up reply actions

i see BUf, Steeger, AND Sharp

all going before Seabs, not for lack of interests from other teams for Biscuit’s talent, but management’s interest in keeping him over the others.

by puppetmasterp on Jun 14, 2010 12:26 AM CDT up reply actions

Plus if the market really is flooded with D

We’d be getting less return for him. Unless the thinking is that we replace him with someone cheaper (Hamhuis?).

by VerStig on Jun 14, 2010 12:45 AM CDT up reply actions

maybe

though i thinks there’s plenty of interest in Hamhuis out there right now. I think he’d be a really good pick up for Vancouver, for example.

by puppetmasterp on Jun 14, 2010 12:48 AM CDT up reply actions

Plus

he might not want to play on a team with Marian Hossa… just sayin’

by VerStig on Jun 14, 2010 12:54 AM CDT up reply actions

We are much deeper at forward

than we are on defense. We have young guys that can replace Steeg and Buff. Not as easy for Seabs.

by stanfordron on Jun 13, 2010 10:20 PM CDT up reply actions

If Buff and Versteeg can both be moved Biscuit can stay!

that will leave ~$2.3M room to fudge around with.

NSH perhaps

Only 1 year left, so it will be contender who will want him (1yr rental), not a building team. This is also what makes it harder to move him. Is he worth $3M for one year? He had a good post season(again) but 17G 17A, meh not impressive for $3M.

he added cap hit we’ll have to take for Toews’s Conn Smyth bonus?

Until somebody from the Hawks says they are indeed in the cushion and need to take a hit next year, that is still speculation.

People are still counting Bolland, Hossa and Burrish’s salaries when they were injured towards the cap without the IR bonus. I still think that is wrong.

by DaleHalas on Jun 14, 2010 4:33 PM CDT up reply actions

The number I have gotten

Shoe the Hawks were under by ~$338,000 for 2009-10 when all is considered (IR time, etc.). So that means only about ~$962,000 of Toews CS bonus will count against next season.

idk

I actually think there are several offensively-challenged teams, or teams with and inconsistent 2nd line, who would love to have Versteeg. I see him and (unfortunately) Sharp as our prime trade bait right now.

by puppetmasterp on Jun 14, 2010 12:24 AM CDT up reply actions

Based on what, other than your imagination

do you “see” Seabrook moving? It has been said publicly by Blackhawks management that 19, 88, 2, 7, & 81 represent “the core.”

I am no where near done with screwing around with this. The first step was Dress 20 players and get under the Cap using “somewhat” reasonable salaries and trades. That is as far as I have really gotten, so everyone chill! Biscuit has not been traded, the sun will still rise in the morning, and SCUM will always be SCUM.

by Katherine215 on Jun 14, 2010 5:04 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah

I should have held off. This was really the first part. Get payroll under $58.6M, and he is a moveable asset (not totally looking at the rest yet). First part is get it under Cap, than keep the best of what you can with truth being allot D-men are FA, but not of Biscuits caliber, while not a whole lot to pick from Centerwise So Bolly and Shooter are must keeps. D-men were second to this. But working it some more, Biscuit is an easy keep, but some new number on Hammer may sacrifice someone else, depending on a few other factors, like what do we get for Buff AND Versteeg, and the Cap hit from it.

So far in the past day, I have founr ~300K more CAP space, and possible numbers for Neimi and Hammer. (Neimi I had reasonable, but Hammer will probably be 500-750K higher than I thought). Even this still leaves about $2M to fudge with on 21 players.

This line from Puck Daddy:

Patrick Kane’s game-winning goal in Game 6 was like Luke firing his torpedoes into the Death Star’s exhaust shaft and not seeing the thing blow up until “Empire” was released.
This would make an excellent video (even if just a jumbled version of the Star Wars footage). Even better so because of the semi-resemblance between Patrick Kane and Mark Hamill.

As someone who was at game 6, I can honestly say nobody had a clue what was going on. There was no goal light and the Ref never pointed at the net to signal a goal. A lot of us thought Kane got highsticked or something and was rushing to the bench for medical attention, we had no idea why he was flailing about like he was. I think someone from my section even screamed out “a Bench Clear?” when the Hawks all started jumping the boards. Then to make things worse, they announced the play was under review, but they never showed a replay of the goal to us on the big screen, which really started angering people because they wanted to see how that goal went in from that angle. Kudos to Kane for knowing where his shot went.

Awesome that you were there!

(Especially if you’re a Blackhawk fan.) Has anyone ever hear an explanation as to how the goal judge AND the idiot on the ice both missed the fact that puck went 5-hole and into the net? Simply because it slid under the bottom pad?
