What It Means To Me

This may be the only picture of us where I look far the most sober.

If you don't mind, I'm going to use this post to try and gather my thoughts of the past five days.  I think most of all what the Cup meant to me is the picture above.  Whatever else may come in our lives, the three of us will have that moment when we realized Patrick Kane scored, and the whole night after it.  And that's a pretty nice thing to have.  I'll never forget it, and neither will you.

Past that, I think the Cup has redefined every Hawks and hockey memory I have.  Before, they were all loose moments.  My first game, my first time in the standing room at the Old Stadium, the night they scored four goals in a 1:56, seeing Gretzky score a hat trick in Josh Mora's seats, Steve Yzerman absolutely Roethlisberger-ing Karl Dykhuis, Steve Thomas scoring four goals, my first trip to the UC, Roenick's last game, the doldrums, and the rebirth, starting the Indian and nursing it to its current state, and all the others, are no longer a jumble.  They all feel as if they were building up to Wednesday and the days that followed.  They make sense now.  Almost.

Past that?  Well, my hair won't grow back.  I'll still be rapidly approaching 30.  It won't bring the one (or many) that got away back.  But it's an awfully special time.  I doubt anyone who was around the Whirlaway on Wednesday, or downtown on Friday, could argue that sports don't matter.  And for the three of us to have such a large group, through this, to celebrate with, well, we're truly blessed.

Some of you may have seen my facebook recently, where I bemoaned that a bunch of drunken trixies and chads in bars I wouldn't dare step foot it (and probably wouldn't be let in to anyway) we'll get their moment with the Cup, and the majority of us won't.  But I realized what they don't have.  They don't have Wednesday night.  They don't have the feeling we've carried the past few days.  They don't have the bounce in their step that I do.  They didn't share that moment with people it was just as important to, friendships forged out of our common fandom.  And I wouldn't trade that for one minute with the Cup and having to sit on Kaner's lap to get it any day of the week.

Anyway, thanks for reading this, I found it cathartic.

p.s. I will be doing a commemorative issue of the Committed Indian, and will make a formal announcement on that in the next day or two, so keep an eye out.

Seriously though, as someone who isn’t from Chicago, it’s awesome to finally have a local team and fucking awesome people to share it with. So thanks to all of you that make watching this team so much fun. Even during March.

Watch it with the jinxing!

Seconded

just not the same to share it with people who are fans of hockey but not the Blackhawks, especially when some chad decides to run around yelling “we did it! we won!” when he only started paying attention in the WCF and is from St. Louis and absolutely sucks at life.

Very well done...

I’ll remember me and my friends, the only Blackhawks fans in Missoula, MT, walking down the main drag in Missoula screaming, “WE FUCKING DID IT” even though no one knew what we were talking about it. Priceless memory

And while Anahiem returns to the locker room, Todd Bertuzzi is cuffed and returns to the squad car.

Thank you

This is probably my second or third posting, but I have been reading you guys for over a year. Thank you for posting the best Blackhawks blog around. I’m not sure where to start.

I always tell people that I grew up at Chicago Stadium. One of my first memories is from about 6 years old (I’m 44). I took the program from Sunday night’s game to 1st grade show and tell on Monday morning. My Mexican immigrant dad got hooked on the Hawks by co-workers and starting taking my mom and me to games. I never really learned how to skate, but played some floor hockey and forced street hockey upon my neighbors. I remember listening to Lloyd Petit at night and worhsipping Tony Esposito. Enough history, but you get the picture. Wednesday night was one of the happiest nights of my life. Thank you Blackhawks for fulfilling one of my dreams (I’m a Cubs fan, so you can guess what my other dream is-yeah, fat chance!). I yelled, I screamed and I cried. We spilled out of the bar for an impromptu block party. My parents aren’t around anymore, but I know my mom is looking down with a smile (she was always partial to Pat Stapleton-“what a handsome boy” she would say). I never went away, so this is particularly sweet. To all the new fans, welcome, and you are spoiled, so let’s do this again next year. YEAH!!!

by mojitousa on Jun 14, 2010 6:07 PM CDT reply actions

so spoiled!

It was still fun to watch these guys go from preseason games in Finland to the highs of December, the Olympics, the doldrums of March and all through the playoffs but I wish my hawks fandom had started even a year earlier, because this would be that much sweeter, if I’d had some real suffering under my belt.

But that’s what baseball is for.

I was able to make it to the parade

Had Thursday and Friday off, but I work in the foster care system which means that your off days quickly become emergency days. Thankfully, I was able to work it so that I was able to make it to the parade and then quickly go pickup a teenage client of mine who had a really rough two weeks. This is a raised on the streets kid. She said something along the lines of “I like how meaningful this is to you, its pretty cool”. I then thought to myself, here I am feeling crappy that I didn’t get to stay up and party tonight, at least I am able to be able to watch almost every game this year in a comfortable home. We are all so very lucky here.

Thanks so much for your hard work with this site boys. I’ve really enjoyed this year and everyone here has helped make it extra special. I know I don’t post much during the games (I get all nervous and superstitious when they play), but its great to have a place to be able to talk about the team in between games.

Anyways sorry to get all sappy…. kinda off topic but close to a year ago I put down 20 in vegas on the Hawks. I’m winning about 240. Not bad.

by 815Sox on Jun 14, 2010 6:15 PM CDT reply actions

way OT, but

I am glad to hear that you work in the Foster Care System. My mother was one of the psychotic Foster Mothers for 40 years, she took mostly hard case kids and turned them into adults. We had 10 kids in our house at all times, and she never thought twice about taking everybody out to eat at least once a week, as a group. She wasn’t the best mother to me, but she was the only mother to a whole lot of kids, and I am proud of her for that.
I grew up with 190+ sisters, and 100+ brothers. She ended up adopting 5 of them. The mail man abso-fucking-lutely despises my mother on Mothers Day and Christmas. lol

by toews on Jun 15, 2010 12:29 PM CDT up reply actions

Beautiful thoughts, Sam. I am 43 and a lifelong Hawks fan who still lives in the area. I watched this team win the Cup with my parents, who are not hockey fans at all, really. I’ve thought about that a lot since. I have plenty of friends who are Hawks fan and of course, there are the guys who sit around me every night in section 302 of the UC. I kinda missed them at first, but I think in the end I will be thrilled I watched with my mother and father. Family memories mean the most and this was an incredible day for me. I will never forget that day and the four after that. Just unbelievable. The more unbelievable was I went to all three Cubs/Sox games and got to relive the whole thing again, only in the electric environment that was the North Side. I also happened to run into many of my Blackhawk brethren I was missing on the night of the clincher. Amazing how it works that way. All of this was so special. I think the memory of the Wrigley night was almost better than the rest of it. I thought the ceremony was fabulous, culminating in Cubs/Sox/Hawks and the Cup all on the pitcher’s mound for a huge photo op. I don’t think something like that will ever happen again in sports. Wow, what a moment. Thanks for this site guys, and all that you do for the Hawks here. It definitely makes it more enjoyable.

by Tazer on Jun 14, 2010 6:28 PM CDT reply actions

This is just plain awesome Sam

Again it was a great pleasure to meet you all on Friday at Bottom Lounge. Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and on I will never forget for the rest of my life. I’m 22, not married, no kids and this is BY FAR the greatest moment of my life. I had never been able to realize a championship in my “short” lifetime. Obviously the Bulls were great but I did not get to truly enjoy it because when they won the last title I was only 10 years old. Over the years the Cubs got close and failed. The Bears got close and failed. The Tampa Bay Rays (long story) got close and failed. I thought maybe my teams would never live up my promise but going into this season I thought I would get that chance again and this time IT HAPPEN. My dream was realized and getting to experience with my buddies and all my best friends in Wrigleyville/at the Parade was truly incredible. As well as the commentary here on SCH. Frankly that is the best part because you all are HARDCORE fans. You eat, sleep, live this team and this sport. You are like me. No longer am I a weirdo, too obsessed, etc. I am normal with you all. It has been a privilege and whatever happens I will never forget it. I have and will continue to relive it by watching games, highlights, Youtube, etc. One more thing, should we have a monthly meetup in the summer? To recollect, chill and have a damn good time!

Like family

Ok, so I didn’t have a crowd of people around me. No one to hug or high five, and the only voice I heard was my own saying “oh my god” over and over again. And ok, I might have had more than my share of adult beverages in the hours leading up to Kane’s goal from that ridiculous angle, and a double dose when Philly scored to send it to OT and Niemi made that falling forward save with his mask in the waning minutes.

But somewhere in the feeling of euphoria, relief, and unbridled joy that came along with the winning goal, I distinctly remember thinking “the guys at SCH deserve this”. And you do, for all you’ve done not just this year, but in the years leading up to this. Congrats, and for the love of God, don’t stop doing what you do!

Trixies and Chads

I can relate to your comment about the barflies who saw the cup. My son sent me a cellphone photo he took of Kaner hoisting the cup in a bar. The green-eyed monster in me says that’s not fair, but if he now has a lifelong passion for the Blackhawks, it’s all good.

"Trixies and Chads" was the perfect description

exactly my reaction to seeing the pics of the Cup in the bars this past weekend. oh well, it is what it is. I would have stuck out like a sore thumb and may have felt the urge to start a few bar fights had i been there, so just as well that i wasn’t.

It would be cool to see it up close someplace, but I’m waiting for that night next season. I’m starting to thing that THAT will be my real celebration. Not that I haven’t been enjoying the victory and the afterglow, but actually seeing the banner go up will be the ultimate catharsis.

Typically yes

I was there in ’06 for the first game after the Sox won the series — there was a big ceremony, the guys got their rings etc. It was odd though that not everyone was there — there had been a couple trades and releases etc.

And I know that’s how the Bulls did it.

Wednesday was a sweet reward

I too got hooked on the Blackhawks early on, way back in 1970 when I was a wee lad of 5. I had just started skating, and the old man took me to a Sunday Night game at the stadium. I was sick with an earache, sore throat, felt like crap. We sat in the upper balcony. I was scared shitless and in awe at the same time. I didn’t feel so bad after the game. I was hooked.
I didn’t get the whole “losing the Stanley Cup” downer in ‘71, but I do remember crying in ’73 when they lost (again!) to Montreal. As I got older I got more into the Hawks until around ’86 when I spent more time in bars chasing girls and boozing than I did anything else. I came back around in ’89 cuz some kid named Roenick was actually creating a buzz. Yep, came back just in time to get hooked again only to get bummed again in ’92. This time I stuck around.
We watched Van Hellemond miss the call the whole fucking building and TV audience saw. We watched Cheli skate 180 feet to stand up for a rookie and get his ass kicked by Pronger. We watched the stars get traded or leave because they dared asked for market value. We watched a Hawks team with no heart not protect their goalie. We suffered through Tony Salmaleinin, Pavel Vorobiev, The Mike Smith Blackovs, The ABC Line, the over the hill but inexplicably overpaid vets like Doug Gilmour and Wendell Clark (but Pully wouldn’t pay Roenick…?), the ever-changing head coaches (Alpo Suhonen? really?)…
We as fans stuck with the team because we knew it just had to get better at some point, that we would be rewarded for our patience and loyalty one day.
I bet this post is going to be filled with many long, sappy comments like this, and I’m gonna read every last one of them, because as Blackhawks fans we all share that same feeling. Fuck the posers and the trixies, this team belongs to US! We can finally say this phrase in our lifetimes and actually mean it – The Chicago Blackhawks, Stanley Cup Champions. Hot damn!

This pretty much sums it up

The moment I saw the bench clear, followed by hugs and back slaps with everyone (stranger and not) around me, and then five days of shit-faced grinning. This was special. Those fuzzy memories from the early 1990s (when I first discovered hockey) through to the first game I attended after WWW died, too, all seem like a cohesive whole now. And there’s that shit-faced grin again.

Thanks for this Sam

I’m sure we’re all taking a moment to relive our fandom. Even those who haven’t been fans for very long I’m sure are taking the time to remember that first game they watched, perhaps their first game in person, favorite players etc.

We’ll always have this. Even in the future when the goalie gets pulled after letting in 3, during a 4 game losing streak or losing yet another game in the damn shootout, we can all take a moment, close our eyes and remember 6/9/10. It makes all of the great memories we all have of the team and each other a little sweeter and the bad memories a little less painful.

Ok, sap off.

That from now on my emotional reactions to game to game, or season to season, fortunes or failures will always be tempered by the equilibrium that this team has given to the Hawks fan in my soul by way of this championship.

Didn’t we at least take one or two group photos? Aside from my ugly mug, we’re a pretty attractive group of people. Let’s shock the world.

Thank you for this and all you do...

I only post here once in awhile, but read every day and before every game I have to pick up a Committed Indian before I walk in the door….my gf eventually got up the nerve to ask what kind of business I was doing with shady lookin’ guys outside of the UC…..;)

The past week has been one of the best of my life….unfortunately I had to miss the parade, but between sharing that moment on Wednesday night when 38 years of waiting ended and seeing the cup at Wrigley last night…well it’s been a moment that at times I thought would never come and made all the trials I’ve endured since I painted my street hockey goalie mask to look just like Bannerman’s back in the day, worth it.

The only thing that has been chafing me isexactly what you addressed in the last paragraph. My girlfriend has shown me numerous pics of several of her coworkers who are all newly minted Blackhawk fans, hugging the cup and mugging for the camera in places I’d never set foot in. I felt cheated and wronged. I’ve paid my dues, that should be me, not those asshats who couldn’t have named a Blackhawk back in January if there had been a gun to their head!!!

…but thank you for saying what you did and helping me to realize I ain’t the only one feeling like that…..and you’re right, we have something they could never have. I guarantee that on Wednesday none of them we’re hugging their girlfriend as hard as they could, tears in their eyes thinking of their grandfather who summugled cans of Schlitz into the Stadium because “Dammit, I’m not spending $.50 for a beer!”….and a dad who tells him stories of Maggie’s first game…and wishing that they both could be there. They haven’t felt the silent pride of loyalty rewarded…..and rewarded richly. We have something they can never purchase……and no amount of Kaner lap dances can help.

….so thanks, for talking me down…I really needed it.

Shit. I would if I were them.

But the NBC link might have been precooked or something.

For those who couldn’t stomach it: Kane talked about the goal. Seabs talked about his hit on Leino. Duncan gave him one of his teeth on a necklace. Toews gave him a sweater with the number 1 on it — which might (I dunno) give Glenn Hall heartburn. And now they’re sitting with the band.

And that’s enough.

Sam, very well put.

I felt the same way seeing the trixies and chad with their stripped shirts and tight pants at fancy clubs.
But you are right, the feeling we all probably had after Kaner scored cannot compare. Ive been a fan since I was 8 and my dad took me to the Stadium. I fell in love and haven’t stopped following the Hawks since. (Despite such horrible horrible teams. Craig Hartsburg anyone?).

I was watching the goal again last night when my wife came in and said, “Why are you watching that again?” I said, “Because it never gets old.” And I had trouble saying it because I was choking up again. Heck, I even brought the Hawks winning the Cup into my preaching yesterday. (And a lady in church gave me a Kane T-shirt because she knew I was such a big Hawks fan. And remember, I live in central Wisconsin where the only sports are Packers football and high school basketball.)

Reading this post by Sam is getting me all misty again.

We went to Montreal

for our honeymoon because we wanted to start off our mission of visiting every NHL city with a Canadiens game. We bought a replica Coupe Stanley and take it out every year for the start of the playoffs. This year, I pasted an Indian Head over the C-H on Wednesday morning and packed it into a shoebox covered in grey tape and NHL stickers. I prayed I was not jinxing us. We opened the box and had our own Cup presentation ceremony after Kaner’s goal.

Thanks SCH and CI

I’m the short guy in the Mikita sweater – my handle is pronounced ‘Chucky ar law’ if that helps place me. Good to meet the triumverate and gmh after the parade. I’ve run into Sam in the smoking area a few times and always make a point to wave the self-printed Indian I get via email and bring along.
Much like Tazer, I’m a 42 year old that’s been waiting for this moment since before my first live game – the regular season finale to the 1988-1989 season. I had seats in the first balcony at the back. The hawks came back to beat Toronto and make the playoffs and then went on a run to the conference finals. I had been following the team for a couple years, but that first live game made me a die hard for life.
I was lucky enough to spend the clinching game with many of our mates from 326. We are all part of the oft-mentioned 3500 season ticket holders, and had long suffered together game in and out. (On the plus side, when you yelled at a player from the 300 level, it was common to see them look up to see who just called them an asshole (or worse)).
Anyhow, sharing this moment with them was a very special thing, and there were more than a few tears and hugs all around. The parade and the Bottom Lounge after just confirmed what a special group of people Hawks fans are, and brought home just how much this moment in time meant to us individually and collectively.

Thanks again to the SCH braintrust and all the members here for making this special time even more meaningful to me.

PS – Sam, tell Gallagher he can have his free reciprocal copy of the CI commemorative issue when the blues win something.

Thanks Sam for a great tome

for the diehards that have paid their dues in tears and faith in the Indian.

My brother, Mom and I listend to Lloyd Petit on the radio and watched all the road games on TV, we knew every player on every team. When I found out that Mikita hailed from my Dad’s home country, I took a special liking to him as a fellow Czech. I remember the 1969-70 playoffs when the Hawks swept Detroit, and each game was won 4-2. I remember Tony O’s rookie season and all the freaking SO’s. I remember the following year feeling that the Hawks were going all the way, and the tears my brother and I cried listening to game 7. We could taste that Cup! We were winning with 20 minutes to play. WTF happened???

I remember when Orval Tessier came and took us to the brink, and then the bottom fell out. And then it was Keenan’s turn to get us to the brink. And then, 1992 and the heartbreak after taking a late lead in game 1 and watching the Pens carry the Cup on Chicago Stadium ice.

I moved to AZ in 2000 so I was detached from the lean years of the 2000’s, watching them fall to one of the worst sports teams in the world. Not to speak ill of the dead, but I had a wry smile when I heard that Dollar Bill had died. When Rocky put the Hawks home games on TV and welcomed Tony, Bobby and the rest back into the family before his Dad’s corpse cooled, I knew they were on to something.

Did I expect winning the Cup so quickly? No, but this team jelled so quickly and took the rest of the NHL by storm. Sure, I was disappointed when the Scum booted us in the WCF last year, but I said to myself that this could be a blessing in disguise, to show them what it takes to hoist the prize.

If they don’t win it again next season, that’s ok, I simply would like them to be as successful as the Scum and win it every few years or so while they have the nucleus they have now and the or-gan-eye-zay-shun that has created this culture of success.

After Kaner’s winning goal last week, I called my brother who still lives in Chicago and we shared the hoisting and the passing of the cup together, both of us crying tears of joy this time, shouting out the names of the players that got it next, all the way from Toews to Scotty B. We looked to the sky and told Mom, they did it, Mom, they finally did it! Nothing will ever feel like this unless the Cubs can get their shit together one of these centuries and pull together as the Hawks have.

Great Write Up (as usual)

Like a lot of people on here, I was brought up a Hawks fan. I went to my first game when I was almost 7 (vs. Scum in Feb or March of 67) and have been addicted ever since.

They broke my heart in ‘71 and to this day I still here the sound of my brother hitting our radio. When the Hawks made it back to the finals in ’73, I didn’t get as excited. I guess the failure in ’71 prepped me for the disappointment.

The balance of the 70s and into the beginning of the 80s weren’t so kind to the Hawks and then along came Savard and company. They never made it to the finals (Thanks Edmonton) but I still think this was some of the best hockey I’ve ever seen was played.

Along came the 90s and they were back on top again. When they made the Finals in ’92, it was great, the last team I wanted to face where the Penguins mostly because of Lemiuex and Jagr.

Eventually that team was dismantled and along came what my brother and I referred to as the Dark Age. This continued up until Dollar Bill’s death in 2007. I remember talking on the phone to my brother after Rocky took control and all of the changes that were to be made. Home games on TV and some great draft choices. The Hawks were back.

Throughout all the good and bad, my brother and I never once thought of bailing on the Hawks. Unfortunately, my brother passed away in 2008 and didn’t get to see this craziness. I know he would have loved it and it would have been great to share it with him. I watched Game 6 with his two sons along with my son and some other family members. As silly as it may sound, being surrounded by them almost made it feel like he was there.

Maybe, just once, someone will call me 'Sir' without adding, 'You're making a scene."

As usual, well said Sam

And well done to all of you at SCH. It continues to be a pleasure and a riot to read this blog. As far as what it means to me, longtime hawk fan, Dad shared season tickets in the second balcony of the old barn back in the 60’s, I was able to get to a bunch of games then, and when I didn’t go, would huddle around the radio and hear Lloyd and Lou call the game and wait for my Dad to bring home a program, lots of heartbreak over the years but finally pure unadultrated joy. We are # 1!

Here’s to another for next year!

Dinners have never tasted better.

Those club hoppin tramps and dickhead frat dudes that will get to touch the cup don’t have the memories or understand what it means to have the cup. I remember every practice on the ice, every time messing around in the street, doing the countdown, or putting yourself in OT of game 7 and scoring the game winner and celebrating in front of your non existent crowd that an outsider would see you and say, “what’s wrong with that kid?”

I made sure to be at home with my little guy for game 6. He’s 6 and been playing since he was 3 and these are his first Blackhawks memories, spoiled brat! The years of pain have all been washed down with this win. But, I sure would give anything to touch the cup. Blackhawks are 2010 Stanley Cup Champions! God that doesn’t get old.

They're not gonna catch us. We're on a mission from God.

Thank. You. Guys.

Safe to say that even if we didn’t get the opportunity to share the moment with other rabid Hawks fans, sharing it with everyone here made it very special for me. The cameraderie that we all have as one big Blackhawk community beats any Cup visit to a Trixie bar.

I wish that we all could have been at the Bottom Lounge to experience this together, but thanks to Sam, McClure, Killion, and everyone else here, I feel very grateful that I am part of this community…wait, I meant family (don’t know how to do crossouts on here).

Very true, Sam. Great memories everyone!

From listening to home games on my parents’ old stereo in my basement, emulating my hero Denis Savard as I shot a plastic puck into a net…to watching my first Hawks game in person and watching Rick Vaive score a hatty from the press box at the Stadium with my Dad (who was covering them for the Trib at the time) which ended up a Hawks victory, 7-5 over the Pens, Feb. 28th, 1988, I’ll never forget it…to staying up late at night with my walkman radio and headphones in bed, listening to games and Foley calling out names like Roenick, Chelios, Larmer, and Belfour (and the exchange Foley & Tallon shared, represented in my signature)…to watching the team sink into darkness from my $8 seat (college ID discount) in the 300 level with 9,000 others at the UC…to watching the emergence of Kaner, Toews, Keith, and Seabrook, and the team rise from the grave…to…last Wednesday night…and the men of a team I’ve followed for as long as I can remember, skate around with the Stanley Cup.

My lone regret, I wasn’t in Chicago when they won, and haven’t lived there since ‘05. But I called my Dad that night (as I live in Madison, WI now) as they skated around with the Cup, and all we talked about were memories like this (getting a little choked up while talking about them too) and sprinkled in we repeated to each other; "They’re Stanley Cup champs! I can’t believe it!" I didn’t get to go crazy in my hometown of Chicago with other diehards like yourselves, but it was still pretty cool to share it with my Dad, even if it was over the phone.

Side bar: If anyone has any idea of when each player will have the Cup…please share! My chance to “celebrate” with it, so-to-speak, as many all over Chicago did late last week, will be when Burish brings it to Madison. I’ve already told my wife, “Hey, I didn’t get my crazy celebration in Chicago, so I’m dropping whatever it is I’m doing as soon as I get wind of where Burish is in Madison with the Cup.” She just chuckled at me, but obliged.

For some reason I have a memory burn of listening to him giving clues to a “name that Hawk” kind of trivia game between periods, where he would give a series of clues until someone could call in and name the Hawk…and the first clue he gave was “He’s a Badger fan”, and the Hawk was Gary Suter. Random, I know. Memory burn is weird sometimes.

I was watching at a bar in Middleton WI

The Cubs dispatched the Brewers at almost the exact same time as the Hawks won. My sister was in Milwaukee for the baseball game. She gave me a call right before the goal, so whichever section she was in at Miller Park got to learn of the Hawks win right away as we both got to celebrate over the phone.

My sister’s getting married in two weeks, and when I spoke to her yesterday I mentioned that I’d come to the decision that if the Cup makes its way to Madison the same weekend as her wedding I’d still be at her wedding but I reserved the right to bitch about it for the next year or so.

don't they wear shin pads?

hey, I get people like soccer, but when I’m comparing it to hockey that I’ve seen a couple days before, I think they’re wimpy.

Obviously you won’t agree with me and that’s fine. I recognize and admit that I’m missing a lot of nuances to the game, but that is just my impression from watching a handful of games.

by Katherine215 on Jun 15, 2010 9:51 PM CDT up reply actions

If you’re asking the shin guard question, you obviously have never played soccer.

It was a readjustment for me, too, but the watching a match like Brazil-N. Korea served as an excellent crash course in why it’s a great game: Brazil played with almost overwhelming skill (and North Korea couldn’t switch to save their lives, which might be more literal than anyone wants to admit), but they weren’t allowed any space to develop plays until they’d exhausted the Koreans about an hour into the match. Brilliant play on the part of the Koreans, but the better conditioning of Brazil won the day.

by meeshak on Jun 15, 2010 9:58 PM CDT up reply actions

obviously I've never played soccer.

for one thing, I’d probably hurt myself in the first five minutes. For another, I’d probably hurt someone else in the next five.

What does switch mean? And why did Brazil wear consecutive numbers? We had the game on at my work and the tv is right across from me so I watched a little.

by Katherine215 on Jun 15, 2010 10:03 PM CDT up reply actions

The numbers 1-11 originally denoted position, but it’s really rare to actually use the 1-11 players on a squad (just because of squad selection and player preference) these days. So, it was a sort of anachronistic/“we know exactly who we’re playing in the first game when we select the squad” confident move on the side of Brazil.

Switch is when they pass the ball to the opposite side of the field through the air. Often, it opens up passing avenues down the opposite flank around the defense, but only the top five or ten squads in the world do it with any regularity.

Shin guards only make it hurt less. They’re a lot flimsier and smaller than hockey guards, and a lot of the top players wear short guards, so most of their leg is actually unprotected.

Also, the impacts in soccer, from my experience, are almost debilitatingly painful for about the first five to ten seconds, but then it more or less goes away (unless you’re injured) until after the game, when the bruise develops.

i agree with this

the first several seconds are awful, but unless it’s a major injury (dislocation, broken something-or-other) it dissapates quickly.

by puppetmasterp on Jun 15, 2010 10:31 PM CDT up reply actions

Thanks for the explanations

I really am trying to give soccer a chance with the World Cup on. We shall see. But it’s fun to irritate you.

And I’m not saying collisions and injuries aren’t painful, just that I think I’ve seen them fall over something that doesn’t seem that aggressive.

by Katherine215 on Jun 15, 2010 10:26 PM CDT up reply actions

They drag their feet when they know they’re about to be dispossessed of the ball, so that their feet get taken out by the tackling player, but it’ hardly ever called. And they can get a card for diving, but it’s usually only very blatant attempts by repeat offenders towards the end of the game in the penalty area.

Well, there are two matches that should be good this weekend: Ghana v. Australia on Saturday (Ghana’s a fun team, very powerful, very fast, and Australia hasn’t caught on to the whole diving thing like C. Drogba came so close. My hatred for Chelski blinded me for so long to his beautiful charms, but in the orange, the man can do no wrong. (And with his arm in a cast!)

I’m picking IC to take second from that group. It won’t surprise me if N. Korea has enough energy left to draw Portugal, but IC will probably get a depleted side with not much left to give, and Brazil will be rounding into form by their third game.

i've always admitted Drogba is a phenomenal player

that didn’t stop me from disliking him. It’s more the attitude half the time…I have no issues with other chelski players like Lampard (except that he can’t get along with Gerrard). But you can’t deny how good Drogba is with the ball.

and the playing with a broken arm thing has definitely earned respect from me.

by puppetmasterp on Jun 16, 2010 12:04 AM CDT up reply actions

I have no respect for England’s “flair” players. That’s not to say that I don’t like them; I just think that only one of them even approaches world class and if we spoke a different language and the EPL didn’t have half the money in the world, players like Gerrard, Lampard, even Terry and Rooney, would be solid position players instead of the supposed heart of championship teams.

A large part of the reason England consistently underperform on the world stage is because they’re actually chronic over-achievers.

less padding in soccer

Soccer looks less violent, but there are a lot more vulnerable spots exposed. For what it’s worth, I’ve played both sports and would have to say that I recall more painful moments in soccer including breaking my wrist. Take my word with a grain of salt because 1) I obviously didn’t play at the level these guys play at and 2) I’m a female. Although I have to say, if you take a puck in an area where there is no padding, the pain is unbelievable.

I think they just have more time for it

It’s just psychology — people whine in every sport because you can get away with it and occasionally get a favorable call. You try to whine in hockey, though, and the other team has an odd man rush. It happens a lot with basketball too, but again, a little less due to the pace of the game.

I have to say, though — the camera people don’t make it any better. I have it on at work too, but without sound, which just makes it look almost comical when they constantly zoom in on players holding their hands out looking for a call.

by VerStig on Jun 15, 2010 10:09 PM CDT up reply actions

but that’s just what I don’t like about the sport. Why not prevent that then like other sports do? Or limit it somehow.

If you haven’t seen this yet, Versteeg appeared with Jay Blunk on Chicago Tribune Live. Towards the end of the clip he says they sorta knew they would win it all after that Game 5 win over Nashville. And I had to admit that I kind of felt the same way. Every time it seemed at all doubtful that they could get there during this post-season I would think about that game and feel reassured. i miss SCH whn i'm not here

just tried to have a conversation with another hockey friend (Flyers fan no less) who keeps insisting that Keith is only an average d-man. “Keith is a very good skater; he is average at best as a positional defender. He’s a fine player. And a reasonable #1 defenseman. But he’s not a top tier defenseman. Not yet anyway”

There’s only so much talking you can do to a brick wall i guess. But then again, i suppose more traditionalists might undervalue the effect speed in a d-man can have on the ice.

I know he's a homer

but Eddie O does a great job of highlighting Dunky’s very solid stickwork on a regular basis.

Didn’t you know, Keith is like Timo just not as good. It’s all over the SB Nation blogs. Don’t know how you guys missed it… :)

I know!

It’s so bad that I’ve just been waiting for my new job to start in July. That’s largely the reason why I had my post count explosion.

Forget withdrawal; the slowdown in commenting is killing me badly enough that I’m thinking about putting up a preview FanPost of my offseason stats project (which I may not get to in full force until August) just so I don’t start going crazy and talking to myself here.

he's a Flyers fan

they all think Pronger should win the award.

Obviously, they thought the Norris award was in honor of Chuck Norris.

But when it was suggested to him that Toews v. Kane seems likely to become a sidebar to every future international hockey tournament, he smiled and said: "I'd like us to win something together, too." -- 2/28/10, so our Captain has said, and so it was done.

Or does it matter less for a D man?

by meeshak on Jun 16, 2010 2:04 PM CDT up reply actions

it's also the idea of

putting so much weight on his getting out of position and undervaluing his skating…..his skating makes up for his positioning b/c he can backcheck and get back in place FAST. to weight them disproportionately basically says you can’t/should play D the way he does….and he’s prove that his style is effective enough, it’s just DIFFERENT.

by puppetmasterp on Jun 16, 2010 3:55 PM CDT up reply actions

he wouldn't be "out of position" so much if the coaches weren't blessing it

those moments come from pressing offensively – if the coach’s game plan stresses having the D press offensively – that sort of “out of position” events will happen now and then. And it is arguable that it isn’t really “out of position” as teh coach running an alternative positioning scheme (and everyone has positioning issues now and then – or else one is not pressing to the extent of hurting the team through missed opportunities)

Why on earth are you still listening to Flyers fans?

If you’re suffering from withdrawal you should be relieving it with experiences of pleasure.

Keith is confusing because he doesn’t fit any of the templates. He’s not a dashing O-hero (Orr, Coffey), or a brute (Stevens, Pronger). He’s more in the Mark Howe/Nick Lidstrom model of doing pretty much everything right all the time without drawing attention. But even those guys had a certain stature to them. Standing still Keith looks like one of the last kids who gets picked. Also like a hillbilly, even when he had his teeth.

I like your friend’s quote. It’s a special laugh when people stay things that sound intelligent but are stupid.

good point

he used to be my biggest hockey buddy actually back when i lived in Boston, and before i discovered SCH. But oddly enough it was the first time i’d heard from him since the Hawks win last Wed. I guess this was the first time he could bring himself talk about hockey without bitching about Leighton’s giving up that last goal.

by puppetmasterp on Jun 17, 2010 9:28 AM CDT up reply actions

Most fans will stay in the first two stages of grief all summer

Anger is a constant for most Flyers fans anyway so mixed in with denial and it’s hard to have a reasonable conversation. I’m not trying, anyway.

I’m grateful to FIFA for scheduling the opening the World Cup on Game 7 day. I’ve been going to the home bases of a number of the competing countries for the matches. None of them know anything about hockey and it’s an odd comfort to be surrounded by fans who while fanatic have a curious resignation about them, as if the games are all decided by the fates. That and seven days of mixing coffee with sambuca or ouzo for breakfast and I can’t even remember the shot Jeff Carter missed.

by flyersfaninchicago on Jun 17, 2010 10:35 AM CDT up reply actions

the World Cup has definitely helped me deal with the end of the season and Blackhawks withdrawl, i’m grateful for that. But I’m trying to stay off the blogs during the games, lest I develop another unmanageable addiction….

Is there a 12 step program for this?

by puppetmasterp on Jun 17, 2010 11:04 AM CDT up reply actions

just one step. go to the pubs and restaurants

i have had so much fun with argentinians, brazilians, portugese, spaniards, french, germans, brits, a couple of guys from the ivory coast, a slovenian entrepreneur, pretty much everyone except the north koreans. we talk about whether or not the u.s. will ever get soccer and if so whether that will be a good thing for the rest of the world.

it’s been a great to be off the computer after eight weeks of tv watching and fan sites. the only time i’ve spent online has been to post my own material and to read a handful of sources. france and mexico are playing in two hours. find a cafe or a taqueria with a tv and have lunch.

correct.

I’ve been there, and even have my picture with it. The “presentation” cup stays there when it’s not doing official duty (during the SCF and player’s 24 hrs). However, there is a replica cup that is displayed in the Hall of Fame when the presentation cup is needed elsewhere

Euphoria and Bandwagoners

I know I’m late to the party (thanks SB Nation for my password 5 days later) but maybe it’s a blessing. Like me, I’m sure many of you have been asked by others about the Hawks, the parade, Kaner acting a fool….my day just shines after that. I was so excited/relieved after the White Sox won the World Series…that doesn’t come close to the feeling of the Hawks winning the Cup.

While I could care less about the tools that get to be with the cup (my day will come), I’m typically agitated with the bandwagonners. How dare you celebrate when you have no clue who the Rat or Jordan Hendry is. One clown asked me what position Campbell plays when he returned in the Nashville series. I couldn’t respond to this idiocy.

But something about the 2 million spectators and the younger posters on this site (I’m 37) make me realize many of these ‘fans’ are not bandwagoners, they’ve become true fans. And to that, I say welcome aboard and just be glad Rocky, not Bill, is running the show.

Final comment – truly THANK YOU to the SCH crew and avid Hawks posters.

My life of contradictions

I should have elaborated on my original post.. I’ve historically been disgusted with pseudo-fans jumping on board during playoff runs (see Bulls Dynasty, Sox in ‘05). But I’ve accepted/enjoyed the newcomers on this Stanley Cup ride. Can’t put my finger on it yet but I think it is because this sport is like a new gift to many younger fans. They’ve never truly watched the sport (can’t blame them for the late 90s and 2000s) and now they have full respect and passion for the game.

Or maybe I’m maturing (highly doubt this theory)

That’s pretty much what I thought you were saying, and I agree about the new fans (and that you’re not maturing).

everyone’s talking about losing players (versteeg, sharp, buff, seabs, bolland, hossa) but according to this, they’re all signed for at least next season:

well maybe not hoss

but the others have been worried over

by northernsails on Jun 18, 2010 6:30 PM CDT up reply actions

they're signed

but the cost of their salaries put us over the cap. So sadly, people need to go.

by ahnfire on Jun 18, 2010 6:32 PM CDT up reply actions

yes, but that doesn't change anything

since we’re already 4million over the current cap.

Then Toews, Kane, and Keith’s new contracts kick in, plus the bonuses that Toews and Kane get, and we have RFAs that need to be signed (Hammer & Niemi especially, IMO) and you can see how 2 million doesn’t really help us. So the cap rising is nice, but we’re so overbudget that we can’t keep everyone.

by ahnfire on Jun 19, 2010 11:49 PM CDT up reply actions

I see.

that does change things. Well as long as we keep the important pieces I’m sure this team will be more than fine for a very long time.
