Very Funny

I have to ask, why would anyone name their daughter after a soap opera character? (Erica Kane – All My Children)

I thought the same thing, but I am sure Mrs. Kane has a lot of time on her hands in between driving Patrick to Hockey practice and making appointments to play tennis and the local Buffalo Country Club. So she was probably a big soap opera fan.

Have heard about Kane’s sister being hot, googled “Erica Kane”, and then were beyond disappointed when hundreds of thumbnails of Susan Lucci popped onto their screens.

And yes, I was one of those young men.

market realities

ESPN has been slurpping this kid’s knob since he was in college, so he is recognizable to people all over the county.

Hockey is still a niche sport nationally. Yes the ratings for Game 6 were the highest in 30 some years but they still pale in comparison to the other major sports.

On Stephen Strasburg

On Mark Prior

They’ve consistently used Prior as an example of the poor understanding in baseball of what makes someone break down. Their analysis is also (at least two years ago, when I read them daily) dead on, both diagnostic and predictive.

Well, about half of the junior/college forwards who become pros started out as centers

many move to the wing later on

At lower levels, the better forwards tend to get placed at center – and only the best of each level move up to the next.

by VerStig on Jun 18, 2010 8:51 AM CDT up reply actions

sort of - that is the baseball field postion with the greatest impact

center is the hockey forward position with the greatest impact (at lower levels any way) – so the best forwards get put there.

A lot of savvy coaches at the very early levels put the very best players at defense, and let them have very free reign to attack the other net (so as to have your very best players largely controling both ends of the ice)

so is that what happened to Mike Green?

Actually, I remember Duncan Keith used to play center too.

But when it was suggested to him that Toews v. Kane seems likely to become a sidebar to every future international hockey tournament, he smiled and said: "I'd like us to win something together, too." -- 2/28/10, so our Captain has said, and so it was done.

Eller, 21, suited for seven games with the Blues in 2009-10, scoring twice. He played with the Blues’ AHL affiliate in Peoria last season where he tallied 57 points in 70 games. The Danish forward, who also played in the American Hockey League All-Star Game, finished 9th in the AHL with 22 powerplay assists.

A native of Herlev, in Denmark, Eller was a first round selection, 13th overall by the St. Louis Blues in the 2007 draft.

Schultz, 20, played in 2009-10 with the Calgary Hitmen, tallying 55 points in 70 games with 150 penalty minutes. He’s the younger brother of Washington Capitals defenceman Jeff Schultz.

Smooth Montreal. Planning on tanking next year, and rebuilding on the Blackhawks plan? In order to pull that off, you need to keep your young talent.

I just wish it weren’t the Blues. Jaro doesn’t deserve to be buried with a team like that. Yeah, he might lift them single-handedly into decency, but still. I wish he’d been traded to a contender (in the Eastern Conference) so that he’d get to show out. Or hell, if they were apparently dealing him for basically nothing but hope, send him to the Hawks. We could have given up a solid forward and a prospect or two for Jaro, am I right?

Has he forgetton who he is dealing with? It’s none other than super agent (in his own mind) Alan Walsh who will wait until July 1st to see who will be the highest bidder. He did it with Havlat last year and he’ll do it again. Enjoy the frustration Blues fans.

he's an RFA, not a UFA

Blues at least have the ability to negotiate a deal with him before then. And anyway, besides the Havlat debacle, we don’t have proof that Walsh will drag out the negotiation to allow other teams to send in offer sheets, do we?

But when it was suggested to him that Toews v. Kane seems likely to become a sidebar to every future international hockey tournament, he smiled and said: "I'd like us to win something together, too." -- 2/28/10, so our Captain has said, and so it was done.

Halak/Niemi will be interesting to watch next season as they basically split games with another goalie.

Howard/Rinne were more like traditional #1s. Hell Howard played in 63 games and played over 1K min more than any of the others.

Rinne is the best

I’d take Pekka Rinne over Jaroslav Halak anyday, but I like Antti Niemi as well. I mean all he did was win the Stanley Cup while starting all the games something that only Ken Dryden in ‘71 and Patrick Roy in ’86 had done previously as rookie netminders. That’s all.

Hey, what Niemi did was great

not taking a thing away from that. But to call him a rookie like Roy and Dryden is a bit of a stretch. Roy was 20, Dryden was 24 and played Ivy league hockey before that. Niemi is 26 and played in the top pro league in Finland before we got him.

Just a bit different IMHO

As of right now,

I’d say Niemi is the biggest question mark. I don’t mean that in a bad way. He only started 35 games plus 22 in the playoffs. I would consider his performance in the playoffs as adequate. He made most of the stops when they were needed but he was a bit scary at times.

Nobody said contenders for what

They’re contenders for a first round exit!

by VerStig on Jun 17, 2010 6:11 PM CDT up reply actions

Halak is very overrated

He had a great 3 weeks starting in April but was up and down the whole year which is why he only started 43 games (the most of his career).

Halak career stats – 101 games, 56 wins, 2.62 GAA, .919 Save %

Chris Mason career stats – 253 games, 115 wins (never on even a decent team), 2.54 GAA, .914 Save %

Doesn’t look like that big of an upgrade to me. They are probably overpaying for the best 3 weeks of Halak’s career.

by Chris Roberts on Jun 17, 2010 3:26 PM CDT reply actions

Sample size!

Not that an eye test is any better, but IMO Halak >>>>> Mason.

Let’s not forget about his Olympic performance.

Sample size?

That’s their NHL career stats. You can’t get a bigger sample size right now. I’m not saying Halak isn’t a better goalie but the Blues have been pretty shitty the last few years. They have a lot of young talent and remind me of the Hawks from 2-3 years ago. Will Halak be their Huet or their Niemi?

by Chris Roberts on Jun 17, 2010 3:33 PM CDT up reply actions

If they can adapt to play a style that fits their talent

They will be a strong contender. It’s that “goon it up” style of play that gets them in trouble and caused them to miss the playoffs (the 2 Ben Eager goal game comes to mind).

by VerStig on Jun 17, 2010 3:35 PM CDT up reply actions

I understand that

I’m saying it’s too early in Halak’s career to compare his numbers to Mason’s because Mason has a much larger sample size. Also, Mason’s numbers in 06-07 were awesome and while I think he’s a good goalie, he no doubt benefited from playing in front of a very strong NSH team that year.

Let’s not forget Montreal’s “never try to play offence” style that had them have all 5 guys back at all times during their playoff run. It was the play of Gill, Spacek, Subban, and Georges that carried them there, not to mention Cammalleri scoring 14 goals.

You must be kidding

or you didn’t see any of those amazing Candiens playoff games. At one point during their run Halak saved 135 of 137 shots, which is only a .985 save percentage! And this was against the reigning Stanley Cup champs and President’s Trophy winners.

More to the point, Halak game up gigantic WHEN IT MATTERED MOST. So I really get your point there…

If you followed the Canadiens, you’d know that their focus has always been having Price as the #1 GK; and that Halak’s on-again off-again stars in the regular season was more a function of Price’s struggles than anything else.

You have no idea whether the Blues are “overpaying for the best 3 weeks of Halak’s career” nor does anyone else until the deal is made, or word of the negotiations is leaked.

Amazing how people are so quick to discredit Halak – Niemi as well (though less so among the Hawks faithful).

there's some merit to what Chris Roberts is saying

career years (and lows) are pretty common in the NHL— the trick is figuring out where a player’s performance in a given season lies relative to the mean. I think given a three-year time frame, Halak and Price seem to be similar players.

I’m not forecasting the future with anything here— I’m not saying the Canadiens will be fine with Price and the Blues will falter with Halak. All I’m saying is maybe the Canadiens looked at more than just the small sample size of the playoff games to base their decision.

But when it was suggested to him that Toews v. Kane seems likely to become a sidebar to every future international hockey tournament, he smiled and said: "I'd like us to win something together, too." -- 2/28/10, so our Captain has said, and so it was done.

(Tweets @ChiBlackhawks and blogs at Blackhawks Down Low.)

by chiblackhawks on Jun 18, 2010 9:32 AM CDT up reply actions

There is also the relative value the Habs would recieve. Price is the guy that was replaced by Halak, so with both being RFAs and them wanting to trade one they would (and did) get more for Halak than Price.

Obviously Gauthier made his decision based on more than just the playoffs – the Canadiens GM had zero contact with Halak/Walsh from the time their playoffs ended until he called and said “you’re traded.”

As I said earlier, those who follow the Habs know that organizationally it has always been about Price as the franchise GK; going all the way back to the beginning, when Price was put as the #1 in Hamilton despite Halak’s superior run of form.

Agree with you that given a three-year time frame, Halak and Price have been about the same; but NOT counting the 2010 playoffs. That gives Halak the edge.

Kolzig

Stood on his head for a couple of weeks in the 98 playoffs too. BFD! He got a retarded extension after that and never sniffed the ECF’s again.

I’m not saying Halak isn’t a good to very good goaltender (though many of you seem to think I am). But he’s being treated as the second coming of Patrick fucking Roy. I will not deny that he played some of the best hockey I’ve seen in that Caps series (which living near DC I had no choice but to see almost every minute of). He had a couple good games in which he carried the Habs against Pitt but beyond those, was just good enough.

He is a good goalie but everyone seems to think he’s one of the top 3 goalies in the league and I’m not ready to start sucking his dick after seeing how up and down he was this regular season (I had him on 2 fantasy teams so I was one of the few who actually new who he was before April).

It will be interesting to see what kind of money/deal he gets from St. Louis. They sure as hell didn’t trade for him to not sign him.

This may be a brilliant move. STL owns the rights to him, so if another team offers him a $3+ mil contract STL could get a 1st and 3rd (or better) pick.

I'm really curious how many clubs will submit offer sheets on Halak.

He’s RFA, which means that in theory someone else could take him if they offer something the Blues are unable to match (unlikely, the Blues aren’t anywhere near the cap recently, so they’ve got plenty to spend on Halak in theory). But at the same time, depending on how much value the Blues give him, you could submit ambitious offer sheets on Halak and maybe even manage to land him. He’s about the opposite of untouchable, even as an RFA. So I really do wonder how many teams will roll the dice and see if their offer sheet is the one that wins the lottery.

by spokeinthebandwagon on Jun 17, 2010 9:06 PM CDT up reply actions

here's the rub

If, and I stress if, Halak gets an offer-sheet less than $3 mil STL can match and have him at a good price. If, another if, they also come to terms with Mason at a nice rate they could have two goalies at a reasonable cap-hit and have a nice thing to move at the deadline.

If again, this may be a good win-win deal considering what MTL got back and they fit in and perform on the Big Team.

Hell of an ballsy move for both (maybe)

2 options are always better than 1

yes, like the Broumaester (spelling bad, I know) trade last year for negotionating (spelling again, I’m drinking) for the rights to make a deal, I would say that’s what they want. But… just thinking… MTL wants players that are ready or near ready to play while STL may be looking at us and Scum and thinking 2-3 years down the road to seriously challange for the division.

by VerStig on Jun 17, 2010 9:21 PM CDT up reply actions

yes, but

maybe STL feels like they have a good group of players right now and can give up somethings that don’t fit in their near plans. So trading those for Halak could net them a package for future considerations to keep their farm system strong.

This is all speculation on my part. I do not know STL’s plan or what they think of their current assets

Nonsense

No way John Davidson makes this deal if there is any uncertainty about the Blues’ ability to sign Halak.

Not true at all, because if they can’t sign him, then they get some pretty sweet first round draft picks (and only lost some prospects that maybe the Blues weren’t too hot on). Quit blowing hot air all up in here.

Davidson

is one of the better hockey minds in the game, so I find it highly unlikely for him to be exchanging an in-hand first round pick (Eller) and an in-hand third round pick (Schultz) were there significant risk of not signing Halak. I can’t agree with your idea that the uncertainty of compensation picks would be sufficient consolation return for a player projected to be a solid #2 center and a promising physical winger. And I’ll “quit blowing hot air all up in here” when you do…

I love this team!

Q took the Cup to a childrens’ hospital, and let the kids all get pictures with Lord Stanley. Apparently a lot of the kids had watched the Cup Finals on TV from their hospital rooms, so then they got to touch the Cup and get pictures with it. The visit was media-excluded, so it’s not even like the team was looking for publicity with this, they were just being nice.

The article in the SunTimes says that it also visited the elementary school where John Madden’s kids attend, and a hockey clinic for hearing-impaired children on the same day (presumably in Q’s custody). So it’s not all party pictures and booze for this Cup, the Hawks are making sure that they do good things.

Yeah that's a huge problem with it

They still haven’t found a good solution. There are some great last-minute moments (T-Mac’s 13 pts in 33 seconds, Reggie Miller’s 8 in like, 8) but the norm is to have things really drag on.

Even in football I sometimes feel like the end of the game starts to drag. I don’t like the stoppage time in soccer (actually, I really hate the idea) but at least you know it won’t drag on.

by VerStig on Jun 18, 2010 12:05 AM CDT up reply actions

I think we can all agree

especially after Nashville Game 5 (and maybe the Devils game this year, which I saw live), that the extra attacker is a much, much cooler way to play in desperation mode than trying to stop a clock from ticking down.

by shinkicker on Jun 18, 2010 6:16 AM CDT up reply actions

It's just I'm a stickler for protocol

and there’s not perfect solution, but couldn’t there be rules about specific things leading to specific amounts of time put on the clock? I know there are a couple of historical counter-examples but I never really get the sense of a “buzzer beater” type of play (though you can argue there isn’t in hockey… that regular season Philly game and one of the ones by Scum notwithstanding).

by VerStig on Jun 18, 2010 8:22 AM CDT up reply actions

Well, you know, it’s a different culture. I think you both sound foolish, kind of like if you started complaining that everyone is always late in Brazil or all the men in Italy are lecherous. It’s just part of the culture of that place. I can see the annoyance, but the exact seconds matter a lot less in soccer, since plays take so long to develop.

And, Verstig, they do time it pretty exactly, often with two stopwatches. There’s the official clock, and then another one they stop and start, then round the difference. And they only stop it for things like injuries and goals, probably penalty kicks, not every time the ball goes out of play (in other words, the players have 90 minutes to play the game, plus whatever time is taken away by unforeseen incidents).

it’s usually exact to within 15 seconds, although i’ve seen them bow the whistle more than a minute after the scheduled end. once it passes 90, it’s all in the main official’s hands, but yeah, they certainly don’t want to create controversy by ending a promising play (although there has been controversy when someone’s scored a goal after the announced extra time had been played).

HEAVILY consider the source

But latest tweet from Eklund: Rumor from TOP NHL source:“There is a Very REAL chance Niemi could be offer sheeted and that the Hawks would have no way of matching.”

Of course, coming from Ek, this might actually be a good sign.

by Damen Madison on Jun 17, 2010 11:47 PM CDT reply actions

So, this means we're close to signing Niemi?

All kidding aside, this assumes Niemi won’t sign his qualifying offer. Isn’t that a pretty big assumption?

It's probably gone

Niemi and his agent are going to test the market and try to get top dollar. I think that there’s a decent chance that the Hawks can lose him.

It's my opinion only

but I think that with the Cap restrictions the Hawks are facing, the numbers that are being offered to Niemi are too low for what him and his agent think that he is worth.

It hurts but...

…Hjammer and Ladd should be the top priorities anyway. Let some team pay Niemi way more than he is worth. The Wings won with 3 different goalies didnt they?

I suspect Sharp is the first to go. There were grumblings this year that Q was not as high on him as some others in the Hawks organization.

I agree. Sharp can sometimes be a liability in the defensive zone (especially when Kane is also on the ice) but the man can put the puck in the net. When looking longterm I see Buff and Versteeg as better options however. This is all going to be either very fun or very horrifying to watch.

Age: Buff 25, Sharp 28. Not a very big difference

Playoff performance this year:
Buff: 11G, 5A, -4
Sharp: 11 G, 11A, +10

I know has been/will be discussed ad nauseum

but I’m in the “sell high” camp with Buff. I was happy with the way all three played during this postseason (I suppose that’s what happens when you win the cup). I think buff is more of a liability defensively than sharp, especially during the regular season.

Ditto for CNS

by Hack on Jun 18, 2010 12:37 PM CDT up reply actions

not picking on buff, but I disagree that he’s been “dominant” in four or five playoff series that he’s played in. I count 3; Vancouver 09, Vancouver 10, and San Jose 10. So 3 of 7. Ok, we’ll take out Nashville, so 3 of 6. Still not bad though.

For this reason I'd rather discuss Steeger than Buff

At least Versteeg can do something useful in his own end… I get confused what the PK forward pairings are though, if there are any. I seem to recall it was Bolland-Madden, Toews-Hossa, Sharp-Versteeg at the end of the finals, but I’m pretty sure I’ve seen lots of other stuff out there.

I don't have a ton of facts on why I think this, but I do

If I had to choose between keeping Haviland and keeping FrankenTorch, I’d rather keep Haviland. Havi works with our Dmen, and I think, he and Q do a nice job with them. Hammer is developing nicely and Campbell really had a solid comeback year and won many fans over. I know FrankenTorch is responsible for our powerplay (shared responsibility I know, there’s blood on everyone’s hands there), and our powerplay…..well, we all know that at times, our powerplay dificiencies were borderline inexcusible considering the talent we have. In summary, I’ll be real disappointed if Havi leaves, and not real devastated if Torch goes elsewhere.

we’re all complaining about SI not having Toews on the cover nationwide, but I just received the electronic copy of ESPN the magazine and the cover is the least of its problems. John Wall is on the cover, and there isn’t even an article about the Hawks championship, not one article! There is however, a picture from game 4 with a measly caption that states that the Hawks won the cup in six. To compound the issue at hand, it’s not even like ESPN is ignoring hockey….there is a piece in the magazine about drafting goalies, but somehow they skipped over the frickin championship.

But when it was suggested to him that Toews v. Kane seems likely to become a sidebar to every future international hockey tournament, he smiled and said: "I'd like us to win something together, too." -- 2/28/10, so our Captain has said, and so it was done.

Hey, Hammer and Nemo worked out so well for us

I guess they figured they’d hit the same pool for the new influx of potentially cheap talent.

Are we now trying to write goddamned limericks for everything?

If so, I approve of this.

only when the opportunity presents itself

although, if dared, I may probably comment in limerick for a specific time period, just for the lulz.

Krueger is gonna be pretty damn great some day

Great idea to sign him. The kid has upside to spare.

Just looked at his blurb.

Ooh, he is pretty.

He was also the third-ranked player in Sweden’s not-insignificant WJC talent pool. Nice.

Music trivia for the day

Did you realize that Richard Marx father wrote the lyrics to Here Come the Hawks?

Hawks Song

How would you like a job where, every time you make a mistake, a big red light goes on and 18,000 people boo?

Regional?

Not sure what they distinguish to be Regional, but herein Mpls, MN it’s Jonny on the Cover (?)

what a piece of shit mag. seriously.
All season long,89 fucking pages of Football-then-Basketball-then Baseball with a paragraph of Hockey each issue (that would be IN season). One issue (during the winter!) they didn’t have one word on hockey. it was unreal.

So I was a little pissed off that the Flyers have Hamhuis.

And/or how Nashville was insane to trade the Hamhuis rights for Ryan Parent, of all players. I understand salary dumps, but still. Right before they dump the Arnott contract, Hamhuis for Parent? If you’re going to dump the captain for a bag of pucks, why not pay the decent d-man’s salary?

Well, at least we aren’t the only Finals team in cap hell right now. And after seeing some of these trades, maybe there’s hope for moving a contract like Huet’s yet.

by spokeinthebandwagon on Jun 20, 2010 1:53 AM CDT reply actions

bright side

the Hawks get to see a lot more of Ryan Parent! yay!!!

though i do feel really bad for the Preds, but there was chance they wouldn’t have gotten anything or him if they didnt make a trade by July 1st, so i guess that was the motivation behind the trade. That, or (since Parent doesn’t really seem NHL ready) maybe they’ll dump Parent in the minors so he can benefit from that great farm system the Preds have for d-men, and in doing so clear even more cap space to go after much bigger fish…..

Ding ding ding!

I have a feeling that ‘dump him in the minors’ is exactly what they’ll be doing. If he turns out decent, well then good. If not, no harm no foul, and most importantly no Hamhuis salary. Or at least that’s what I’d do if I were their management; Parent made it pretty clear that he needs a couple of years with a good D-coach to be ready for the responsibilities he was handed in the playoffs.

Although where they’re going to pick up a D-man of Hamhuis’s quality to bolster the blue line would have me concerned if I were a Preds fan.

by spokeinthebandwagon on Jun 20, 2010 9:55 AM CDT up reply actions

the Preds are relly deep in young, quality defensement in their farm system

its the one big asset they really have, so i think they were pretty resigned to losing Hamhuis without too much concern. That’s the other reason it’s a good place for Parent to be — they seem to know how to make young d-men “NHL ready” and with Parent’s last year being what it was (bad) it seems like he could really benefit from a system like that, to regain his confidence and some of the promise he showed a couple years ago prior to getting injured.

Thanks Katherine

My wonderful 20 and soon to be 22 year old kids have planned a day out with me. To solidify my standing as “World’s Greatest Dad”’ they’re going to let me pay for everything.

Maybe, just once, someone will call me 'Sir' without adding, 'You're making a scene."

Thank you, Katherine!

My daughters gave me a Hawks baseball cap, Hawk Stanley Cup t-shirts, and a framed copy of that picture of the team on the ice around the Cup. Very cool. What a great family I have! :-)

Also, the Stanley Cup was in Elk Grove yesterday in a parade. Didn’t get to touch it this time but it was cool to be up close to it again.

That's some great kids there.

Wasn’t it nice of the Hawks to win the cup so you could get all that great gear?

Yes, it really was considerate of the Hawks to do that.

They made finding presents so much easier on the kids this year. No socks, no ties!! :-)
