Fraser To Edmonton For A Sixth Round Pick? Wild Rumors On An Early Thursday Morning

"Edmonton? Awww fuck..."

I haven't seen much at this point... just a bunch of people on Twitter talking but the rumor is that Frazz is off to the city no one loves anymore and the Hawks are getting a sixth rounder in return.  I may fall asleep before we get any official confirmation on this

Also, since I haven't been able to post anything about this all day... let me just say:  USA! USA! USA!

UPDATE:  There's a lot of noise on the Oilers side of this saying this deal is official but nothing so far from the Hawks side.  Either way.. I'm going to bed now.

USA?

What happened? Did they score a 92nd minute group-winning goal to avoid bowing out of the World Cup or something?

I don't either

Isn’t Frazz worth more than a 6th rounder? I feel like he can play higher than 4th line center on another team though, and certainly in Edmonton I hope he could get that at least.

nooooo not the Fro!!!

I really thought Frazz had earned a more solid spot on this team, but if this is true (Rogers has “according to a league source”) he will definitely be missed.

Somehow I don’t understand how the revolving-doghouse-door works on this team but if it helps us keep everyone else, thank you Colin, for taking it for the team one last time — and not just with your face!

by VerStig on Jun 24, 2010 8:03 AM CDT up reply actions

what could Frasier expect to have made next year? I mean, he only made $700k last year, so I’m not sure he’s much help in clearing cap space.

Can’t say I understand this move. Maybe for a 3rd round pick, but a 6th rounder?

by aeroplane on Jun 24, 2010 9:19 AM CDT up reply actions

I speculated below

Maybe so we have tagging room to even tender offers to the other RFAs. Otherwise, I’m with ya — I don’t know how it’s helping to do this now.

by VerStig on Jun 24, 2010 9:21 AM CDT up reply actions

Like VerStig says, I think this speaks to roster and cap complexities that my small mind can’t sort through. You wouldn’t make this kind of move unless it made things easier elsewhere to solidify some other key component. As to a third-rounder for Frazz? Love the guy, but I don’t think he would bring back that kind of pick. Maybe Frazz and a 6th might get us that high, cause keep in mind that 3rd rounder, from Edmonton anyway, is basically a late 2nd-rounder.

Think he is worth more than a 6th round pick. I understand needing that extra $900+ when you want Niemi and Hjammer. Also, I believe the Hawks need to re-sign Skille and Bickell so that money should come in handy.

by pnote on Jun 24, 2010 10:48 AM CDT up reply actions

Yeah. I guess we get something for him instead of just losing him outright, but I think an young, NHL proven center that can win face-offs is worth more than a 6th round pick. Even if that player is a 4th liner.

wonder who

the prospect might be. I’m assuming it’s not going to be one of their top 5, since the Hawks are already getting a first rounder. But If it includes goaltending prospect Cory Schneider, I think this would be the steal of the young decade.

Vancouver will be very, very good next year.

by aeroplane on Jun 24, 2010 9:26 AM CDT up reply actions

Is a first rounder really worth that much?

Seeing as how the draft is a crapshoot, I would feel like this is a pretty bad deal unless it’s an excellent prospect.

That said, as people are saying all over — “NHLSourcesSay is not a legit source”

by VerStig on Jun 24, 2010 9:29 AM CDT up reply actions

i definitely

agree that the draft is a crapshoot. But a 1st rounder and a goaltending prospect like Cory Schneider could very much help me forget about Steegs.

I really

don’t get the Vancouver hate. We’ve eliminated them the past two years, we won the cup and I’ll be happy if we get one of the better goalie prospects in the league.

I would agree that I’d rather our top guys go to teams that aren’t Cup contenders, but my #1 concern is shoring up our development system where we are not only weak, but where we really could see a big upside, with a really good player.

Then again, we’re obviously dealing in hypotheticals here. We don’t know that Steegs is going to Vancouver and we don’t know what’s being offered.

by aeroplane on Jun 24, 2010 10:36 AM CDT up reply actions

I dont get how you dont get the Vancouver hatred. They are the biggest collection of d-bags in the NHL and thats saying something with the St..Louis Blues around.

I just sort of assume now that we will face Vancouver in the playoffs and them having one of our go to guys pisses me off.

I would not be willing to make one of our main rivals a better hockey team when our return is a late 1st Rd pick which is basically nothing when you consider how much of a crapshoot the draft is.

I understand the reality but am angered by it.

Can you image how much we would all hate Versteeg as a Canuck?

As much as we would love him Hjammer.

I have to tell you though, the prospect would NOT be Cory Schneider. He is pencilled in as the backup, and they know how good he is.

He will play 20 or so games to increase his value, and maybe go at the deadline next year.

If I was to guess, I would say the 25th and someone like Anton Rodin…or maybe someone else, we have a lot of prospects. Shirokov…you guys need a Russian right?

I get the hatred by the way guys. Its mutual, and fun. Unlike Burish though, I would have a beer with you guys.

Please.

Not to start a flame war, but you guys used up all residual lingering “issues” with the flopping and diving of Madden, Bolland,Kopecky, and anyone wearing a Hawks jersey in games 3-4.

Burish was on his back more than a five dollar hooker, and even Toews caught the bug in Game 3…flying through the air from a dive to forearm shiver Bobby Lou after the slightest of touches by a defenseman…Hey…whatever it takes right?

Hey, it worked, and the refs bought it. You can’t argue with the results either…

The little hacks on the hands of Danny Sedin to get him off his game. The constant slashes to the legs, the bullshit after the whistle.

The Canucks were at fault for losing their fonzie, but come on!

The Hawks don’t, and haven’t, played like some wonderfully clean Lady Byng team.

Sorry to burst your bubble.

I have visited SCH in the past…but thanks for the welcome, BTW…

Look.

Not to get into it…and if someone telling you the truth bothers you…sorry.

But try and watch the games on your PVR without the fan hat on.

I can remember two off the bat…Madden falling like he got shot when pushed after a whistle by the noted goon Daniel Sedin. Resulted in a GWG.

Kopecky doing the same behind the net when Edler did not even hit him. The aforementioned missile tackle by Tazer that looked like he had been training with Urlacher.

It is part of the game. But to say the Canucks are gooney douchebags when the Hawks actually did the douchey diving better…and helped themselves win the series..

Is just being a fan.

(BTW…I think it was mainly because I was looking forward to a more wide open, talent versus talent series. Every time the Canucks did that, they won or almost did. Every time the Hawks resorted to the goading and whatnot, they won. I felt cheated from watching high talent hockey for the whole series…hopefully the Canucks learnt from it this year. I don’t think I could handle a third in a row! )

I get it, its cool. Defend the flag against the hated rival. It doesn’t bother me.

I don’t really blame the Hawks…I blame the Canucks for falling into the trap of being goaded, and the refs for having the eyesight or Mr Magoo….or being “choosey” in who gets a break.

Like I said the day they won it, congrats tot he Hawks…they were the deeper and better team.

But they didn’t need to play that way.

Hope speaking the truth is not “wearing out your welcome”.

I’ll go now….

My perceptions are not colored by homerism

In fact I do more bitching and moaning about the Hawks play than I do about the opponents during any given game. Ask anyone that sits around me during games. I rag on the Hawks mistakes constantly. In fact I’ve had non-season ticket holders sitting around me, that aren’t used to my whining about Hawks gaffes, think I was a fan of the opposing team. All of this by way of establishing that I’m as far from a “homer” fan, watching the game through rose colored glasses, as you can get.
So, I feel very comfortable and am absolutely confident in saying that this assesment of the Hawks play is just plain wrong. They do no more or less of the type of play you describe than every team in the league tries to get away with during the course of any given game. And it most certainly is not of the over the top theatrical nature that you describe.
If the Hawks engaged in the kind of behaviour you claim the majority of posters on this site are objective enough in their assessment of the home team that they would have called them on it long ago. In fact that is what is so refreshing about this site, it is almost entirely free of the kind of idiotic, jingoistic homerism that is rampant on other sprots team blogs.
Sorry for the rant. But felt I had to defend our team and SCH reputation from spurious accusations.

I'm really hoping that

Sharp stays at second line center and Bolland gets another year on the third in the checking line role.

If Bolland has a full, somewhat injury-free year, and makes the necessary offensive progress, then in 2011-2012, give him the 2nd line role.

This team has a much better chance of a repeat with sharp at 2nd line center…for the time being. I suppose they could got out and get a second line center, but I doubt they could make room for it.

I don’t know that we’re saving terribly much (over on C&B they figure they should be able to keep him for $0.9-1.0m) but maybe after doing the math, Stan figured every little bit counts. Ladd just became more valuable to this team

after they dealt Buff. Ladd is a good power forward. Hjammer this season showed he is a huge asset. What does our 3rd line D look like as of now? I thought Boynton and Hendry were both free agents. Does this mean LaLonde will get a shot at playing on the 3rd line?

I’m just pairing guys up. It makes little sense to have Campbell and LaLonde together and I fear that LaLonde and Hendry could be a disaster.

I don’t see Hammer getting top 4 money this coming year.

I suppose I'd have to do a little more research to verify this

Lalonde has less than 10

AHL games. That is not a lot at all, especially for a defenseman. He’s also only 20, and there are only a handful of Doughtys in the world. I would be really surprised if he’s ready.

Wouldn’t the team want him to get a lot of playing time? He’s not going to do that up here – the AHL is probably a better decision for him. Maybe we’ll see him called up periodically but full time? I’m just not sold yet.

by Katherine215 on Jun 24, 2010 10:18 AM CDT up reply actions

I agree. He was a middle-tier prospect with promise before he busted out last year. The best thing possible for him would be to spend the year in Rockford. I can see him getting a couple of games in during October, but he’d definitely do better getting 20 minutes a game in the AHL instead of 6 or 7 here.

I thought trading Fraser gave a hint on Bowman’s plans for next year. I’m thinking they are going to go with a 20 player team. Then bring up players from the AHL as needed. When the Hawks got a 4th line center back on the Buff trade that meant Fraser and Madden were no longer needed.

We currently have one of the best cores in the league, we’re young, we have capable prospects in Beach and LaLonde and while we may not win the Cup again next year, we’ll still be damn good and increase our chances of another run at multiple championships in a few years time.

I think these are the best moves to have Detroit Redwing type success.

Huet’s going nowhere. Unless another team can eat the high salary for two years, piss off their fan base for making a backwards move.

The Capitals got an amazing run from him heading into the playoffs in the season before he signed with us. I didn’t see all the goals against, but that last goal he gave up — the goalie did the right thing, the finish by the Slovakian players was fantastic though, The scorer got through in the first place but busting ass on a throw in while 2 or 3 Italian defenders just watched him streak past them.

I definitely put a lot of blame on the Italian D, but their offense also failed to show life until they were down by 2 goals with 20 min left to play. so I blame their O too. Blame all around.

burish doesn’t seem to be much more than a chemistry guy. Maybe if he’s healthy for a full season this year he’ll make some plays (like he did in 08-09), but I’d rather have eags.

Eager took too many stupid penalties. Burish seems important to team spirit, doesn’t take those penalties, and sometimes gets a few minutes on the ice.

good points

all around. We’ve lost two big guys in Buff and Eager, and we’re perhaps losing Ladd. Are we giving up too much “toughness”, or does does one named Beach make up for all that lost size and grit?

Or perhaps losing both Buff and Eager point to the Hawks keeping Ladd and losing Steegs?

I agree with what you said, and with what blackhawkeyes said right below.

Its no big secret that I am a HUGE fan of Burish. I love what he brings to the team. It is the intangibles, and he just plays smart, solid hockey. He brings the energy and he draws a strangely disproportionate number of penalties for his TOI.

I love the guy for that stuff. He’s not expensive, he’s the kind of player that they can probably sign to a 12 year, 13 – 15 million dollar contract, and he would never stop playing the same way.

I'm expecting Burwood

I'm getting confused

why are people continually confusing “best wishes/thanks for the past year” with “OMGNOOOOOOOO WE LOST BELOVED ”?

When we lose a player from our Stanley Cup team, of course we’re going to be sentimental about their contributions. And from my readings, the only reason people are upset with the Frazzle trade is they thought we could’ve gotten more than a R6 draft pick, and people will miss Sopel for his classiness off the ice and willingness to take the puck on the ice.

I don’t think we’ll see crazed “OMGNOOOOO” style posts until we trade VerBeauty or Ladd (depending on what we get back). So far everything has been pretty even-tempered, so I don’t get why people seem to think these comments are all effused with loving praise for our dearly-departed.

by ahnfire on Jun 24, 2010 12:31 PM CDT up reply actions

thank you

since when did missing a player’s contributions off-ice or thanking them for what they did while here fall into the category of “unreasonable?” I didn’t think we’d keep Frazz, and although i’m not sure this move really helps our cap woes, it’s fine as a business decision.

But did it make me happy to see a Hawks player sporting a curly red-haired fro during the playoffs. Of course! and if you tell me you didn’t enjoy that, you’re lying. Don’t lie to me.

I played for “Team USA” against a lot of Japanese University teams and got to go to an international tournament that they hosted.

They do play, and they’re not great at it. They do play as one would expect them to. Very deliberate and methodical, you don’t see a lot of impressive creativity on the ice. They skate within the confines of their system and do it well, but nothing exceptional.

Of course, I wrote that in present tense, based upon my experience between 94 and 97. Things might have changed since then, I guess.

I never want to see England win it. That would be the worst possible thing that could happen to world football. And yes, he was that in Toronto, the problem is that they weren’t necessarily building well enough around him.

Who is Johnson?

I’m entirely serious. I don’t follow basketball at all and I honestly don’t remember hearing about a player with the last name Johnson. Is this Joe Johnson, who Wikipedia just told plays for Atlanta?

by meeshak on Jun 24, 2010 10:25 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm fairly behind

But yes, he’s a pretty good player who plays for Atlanta. Last time I followed basketball he was still with Phoenix, and a pretty good shooter if I remember correctly.

This Japanese game reminds me of their opener in ‘06. The Australians were down by two with ten minutes left and won the game. That’s probably not happening today, but it’s worth keeping in mind.

The Japanese do not know how to hold a lead for the victory.

by puppetmasterp on Jun 24, 2010 3:11 PM CDT up reply actions

You’re putting the ball into play, same as any other kick. Are there any soccer law experts out there who can tell me if a guy can put in his own rebound off the post or cross bar, without it having touched another player?

Ah that makes sense

Wait, so Luongo is Japanese, too?

by VerStig on Jun 24, 2010 3:14 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah, you got it spot-on

it’s putting the ball into play. You can even pass it to another player on your team, if you particularly want (as seen here).

by Germware on Jun 24, 2010 3:17 PM CDT up reply actions

Do you remember that great missed penalty for Arsenal where Jose Reyes was supposed to tap the ball to Henry, but Reyes’ boot slipped off the ball and it basically didn’t move, so suddenly this streaking Henry goes running by without a ball? Of course, Reyes couldn’t touch it a second time, because he’d just put it into play even though it hadn’t moved, and Henry was about twenty feet away. The whole thing was hilarious.

by meeshak on Jun 24, 2010 3:27 PM CDT up reply actions

I think it was Pires, but yeah

I’m pretty sure the ref didn’t notice the ball had been hit – barely – and so the penalty was retaken & scored when it shouldn’t have been. Nevertheless, funny as fuck.

by Germware on Jun 24, 2010 3:39 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah, you’re right. Explains why I couldn’t find any YouTube clips. There was a guy in my hall at that match and he was soooo confused when he got back. I guess no one in the stands had any idea what had happened.

by meeshak on Jun 24, 2010 3:42 PM CDT up reply actions

No, they cant.

From FIFA Laws of the Game:

• After the players have taken positions in accordance with this Law, the
referee signals for the penalty kick to be taken
• The player taking the penalty kick must kick the ball forward
• He must not play the ball again until it has touched another player
• The ball is in play when it is kicked and moves forward

FOR SALE: pair of shoes, red, size 32 1/2 wide. Please direct all bids to Joel Quenneville, Chicago Blackhawks. Clown horn sold seperately. Also for sale: 328 dogs+1 pistol (bargain price for Leafs fans!)

In short, I’m okay with both deals.

The Hamhuis deal is good because we got actual value (Ryan Parent, draft pick) for a guy who we were never going to keep and was a free agent. Ryan Parent can come in as the 6th defenseman and fill that role quite nicely, especially considering he’s good on the penalty kill which we need. While at first glance it doesn’t look like we need another D, it was a savvy move.

As for Arnott, quite simply, it was time. You knew that the real leadership in the locker room was Weber, Suter, and Sullivan, and it showed on the ice. Arnott didn’t give good effort and whined. I fully expect Weber (or Suter) to be named captain in the next few months.

More importantly, and considering the small return we got for Arnott, this was a salary dump (4.5) by Poile. Matt Halischuk is nothing special, and the 2nd rounder is in 2011. I fully believe this move was made to go get a higher-ish level point producer such as Stephen Weiss in FLA while Colin Wilson works his way into the 1C hole left by Arnott. After Arnott and Hamhuis’ salaries are gone, we have $9m in actual spending money, not just money to the cap. Look for Nashville to be a dark horse in free agency or trade.

Final grade? Probably a B+.

by Chris Burton on Jun 24, 2010 4:22 PM CDT up reply actions

yeah, my first reaction was “looks like they’re clearing room to go after bigger fish…” Plus Parent’s had hi issues getting back to form this last year, and if any team is a good place for a fledgling d-man to get his confidence back, it’s probably Nashville.

by puppetmasterp on Jun 24, 2010 4:27 PM CDT up reply actions

Parent has had a similar back problem to Steve Sullivan. The belief here is that Poile thinks the team trainer can do the same for Parent as Sully.

And yeah, we have two of the NHL’s best defensive prospects in the system to bring up if he fails, and he’s going to be hiding behind Weber, Suter, Franson, and Klein anyway.

7 hrs, but then I live in South Carolina, not Chi-town

I don’t know how long the drive is from Chicago (from people that I talked to when I attended game 6 of the first round this year, it’s less that 8 hrs), but Nashville’s a pretty cool city, especially around the stadium. You could probably do the drive with only one day off, and since I’m pretty sure all the Hawks’s dates next year come on weekends, it could be an awesome field trip. Hook up with someone from in town to show you amazing barbeque and damn good beer, and you’ve got yourself a weekend. Tickets are cheap (because even in the playoffs, where I bought mine, they were looking to fill seats), hockey is surprisingly good, food is fantastic.

From someone who roadtripped out for the playoffs this year, Nashville is worth the driving!

More eveidence that Mariotti is an idiot

i don’t know why Around the Horn was on my tv just now, but they were debating the recent NHL trades, and Mariotti was livid about getting rid of Buff….he feels we should have gotten rid of Sharp or Steeger, but Buff was the wrong one to trade.

it was at this point that I started thinking maybe Mariotti and Mike Milbury were clones from the same set of genes…..

by cliffkoroll on Jun 25, 2010 8:11 AM CDT up reply actions

I think that’s a huge refinement, ya. I’m a bit more of a Buff lover than is the norm here at SCH. We can all argue all we want about what happened, but the small simple fact is that it had to happen, there were no choices in the matter. And the fact that we got 2 high picks and one prospect with good hands in return … that’s more than I bargained for considering every team in the league knew we were in trouble. I honestly wonder if we would have got the same return for Sharp (I think he is more valuable, but I don’t know if the market would have thought the same). Buff’s value was at its peak, probably never to be higher, and Stan took proper advantage of it.

from what I hear

a LOT of teams are asking for Sharp. The answer is no. Some GMs thought Buff’s price was too high. Some still think Versteeg’s price is too high. I think Sharp would have warranted more than a cap dump, personally.

But when it was suggested to him that Toews v. Kane seems likely to become a sidebar to every future international hockey tournament, he smiled and said: "I'd like us to win something together, too." -- 2/28/10, so our Captain has said, and so it was done.

as much as mariotti is an idiot,

I’m happy that someone on ESPN is talking about hockey in the offseason. and the fact that they were talking about an inconsistent top-6 forward and not crosby vs. ovechkin makes me happy.

don’t get me wrong, I’d rather he didn’t speak like a jackass, but at least it’s things like this that are starting to put the NHL on the map. if a segment on around the horn gets a few more hockey fans, it’s worth the idiocy. new fans don’t start out by knowing everything, but they can learn.

Mariotti is a joke.

Only in the world of Mariotti (or anyone else who only watches 6.5 hockey games a year for that matter) would you consider Byfuglien a more valuable piece than Sharp. christ. I think we hosed Atlanta on that one, and judging by the reaction over at their SB blog, they think they got hosed as well. They all wanted sharp for what they gave up. Can’t say I blame them, there is no way that Byfuglien was actually worth a first round pick and a prospect that was taken in the second round (Morin). Hats off to Bowman on that one.

And while Anahiem returns to the locker room, Todd Bertuzzi is cuffed and returns to the squad car.

If playing on the best team in the league in front of SRO crowds every game can't motivate you

I really don’t think a change of scenery to Atlanta will. Though, if anything will motivate him, it’s that he’s in a contract year.

by illinikc33 on Jun 25, 2010 12:10 AM CDT up reply actions

Agreed.

If I had to make a guess, I’d say Buff’s productivity declines markedly in the ATL. He had Chi-town crowds, amazing coaches, and some of the best players in the league as his captain/alts/linemates to motivate him this year. Atlanta gives him none of those things. If I were a betting person, I’d put heavy money on a steep Buff decline, and maybe on Atlanta trading him again within the next three years.

by spokeinthebandwagon on Jun 25, 2010 10:52 AM CDT up reply actions

I wonder if being surrounded by less elite talent

might light a fire under his ass. If he slacks off, Toews, Kane, Hossa, Sharp, Keith et all won’t be around to work hard for him. So maybe he picks up his effort/intensity to a higher level more consistently.

Or he’s just regular season Buff, with more eyes on him more often, because all this other guys aren’t there.

I want him to be his best (as long as it doesn’t hurt us) but I’m not sure what his best is.

TSN Mock Draft

Just had the ’Hawks selecting with the 24th pick Riley Sheahan a centre from Notre Dame. Not amazing numbers in his freshman year but is heavily regarded as an excellent two-way centreman.

And with the 30th pick they had the ‘Hawks select Jordan Weal. Considered a little too small but still managed to net 102 points in the WHL this season with the Regina Pats. Everything I’ve read about this kid is impressive and I hope the ’Hawks grab him either with this pick of the 24th pick.

I agree to the extent that we’ve lost some size in the Byfuglien deal, but this kid Weal is the real deal (and, yah, I know that’s bad) and can play anywhere at the forward position. He’s got quick hands and a wicked release and could be a steal @ 24 or 30 should the ’Hawks wait that far to take him.

Although I’m a big fan of size, I’d take skill over size anyday.

According to TSN
Florida Panthers’ general manager Dale Tallon is shopping 15th overall.
He’s willing to package another player with it to attract an offensive forward, or would consider a collection of draft picks in return.
Likely a trade that happens on the floor just before the selection, although a number of teams are interested.

Maybe this is where Versteeg ends up.

But Steeger is worth more than a 15 OA pick. This one still needs to be sweetened (I hope) before the Hawks bite, if they are players. Don't know why I feel compelled to post this in this particular spot, but....

After reading all of the comments and speculation I’ve read here and elsewhere over the last week or so I’m actually starting to think that we’re going to have the same tandem in goal next season.
Moving Huet in any sort of trade is starting to seem nigh on impossible and I just don’t get the feeling that the Hawks are willing to eat whatever portion of his contract they’d have to under any of the other scenarios put forth for relieving us of his services.
I think they’re going to shed as much salary as they can by moving other players and go with younger/cheaper alternatives to fill out the roster. Then lean much more heavily on our big guns next season.

I... actually wouldn't be upset about that at all.

Okay, I’d be REALLY upset about paying 6 mill to a backup goalie, but if there were any way to ameliorate Huet’s salary, he’s a good player who would be an outstanding backup to take about half the games from Niemi and keep the pressure off our young goalie when it comes to the full season. We know that Huet can handle 40 games a year with alacrity, and I’d love to see him get a chance to prove himself in that atmosphere. I think it might help him get his confidence back.

Ya....

I’m slightly right of center and find Colbert to be mean spirited while Stewart is about exposing hypocrisy no matter where he finds it.

Colbert is a trumpet for Democrats. I admit I have laughed at that show before but I cant take much more than 10 mins or so at a time.

The future may be looking very bright!
By acquiring the 151st pick from the Oilers, the Blackhawks now have 11 selections in the draft—five in the first two rounds (24, 30, 43, 54 and 60)

You can never have too much depth right!

Its a new day.

I really love how people that fell in love with the Hawks this past season are so pissed Byfuglien is gone. This is a new day in Chicago Sports if you are a Cubs fan and under 35. Our Team finally won a Championship, no longer do we have to build a team to win. We have to build a team to retain and get even better. I love the fact Stan is taking lessons from Pops and stock-piling. I also love that he is trying to undue the few mistakes Dale made. This is awesome and I am so excited for tomorrow and the draft!

I'm not overly thrilled he is gone

But certainly not pissed. Having that big body be able to park in front just added to the number of styles the Hawks could throw at a team, and was very important in the Playoffs. I’m just hoping it is not missed next season, if the Hawks can (and should easily be able to) adjust to not having that mountain in front of the net like they did with Buff, this was a very good trade, given return, CAP Clearance, and cost. I actually more bummed about Sopes, but he cost too much for a 3rd pairing D-man, but when your 3rd pairing starts with a player like Sopel, you have a pretty good D-Core!

Right

I could see him taking the next year off until April and then lighting it up again and then asking for Toews-like money. I am too bummed about Sopel, the guy played his ass off and went from a Healthy scratch practically to playing meaningful minutes in a Cup Clinching game. But its a business and he made too much, Eager can go to Atlanta and be a moron, he lost my faith after he didn’t stand up for Seabrook against Wiz in Anaheim….Keep stock-piling those picks.

I'm over 35...

But not pissed at all. That being said I hate to see anyone leave that has made a great contribution to bringing the CUP back to Chicago. Buff certainly played a huge role in the playoffs as did Sopel, but it is a business and had to be done. As long as things don’t turn out like they did for the SOX, and I mean the team basically going from heros to has beens, I’m okay with the trades so far.

The thing that can kill a team over a season is lack of chemistry and injuries to key players. Injuries you can’t do much about, and chemistry just happens. I think the SOX lost some of that chemistry losing Rowand and it came back to haunt them. Losing Buff and Sopel I don’t think is nearly as big a deal. The Hawks can certainly score without Buff in front of the net and it’s just a matter of someone filling the role at times. Sopel was a role player on defense and hopefully someone else can step in, we’ll have a whole season to figure out who.

by CaptDirk on Jun 25, 2010 7:37 AM CDT up reply actions

"adjust to not having that mountain in front of the net"

Funny, that. From a Felspost back in October:

That does not mean I’m actively advocating moving Buff. However, if the Hawks think they need to add a piece — say a #6 d-man or new goalie — someone’s got to go. Secondly, someone’s got to go to clear space for Cap Apocalypse in the summer anyway. Of the three most likely — Buff, Barker, and Versteeg — Buff is the most replaceable. It’s funny, for months last season Buff was the whipping boy around here. Then he has one good playoff series (and only one as he didn’t do much against either Calgary or Detroit) and suddenly he’s a hero. Since the opening two games of the season, Buff has done jack and shit this year. You have to get cheaper somewhere, and here’s one place you can. Not only would Brouwer have no problem getting to the front of the net as Buff does, but he’d do it quicker. He’s more responsible in his own zone, and isn’t nullified when playing speedier teams like Detroit.

I only have one question

are we going to play Stonhenge tonight?

How the fuck did you dig this up?

by Hawkynite! on Jun 24, 2010 11:31 PM CDT reply actions

I've been meaning to ask this for a while

How does the draft system work? Obviously the 14 teams that don’t make the playoffs get the first 14 picks, with the order getting determined by regular season points combined with the Lottery, and the Cup winners get 30th pick and Cup runners-up get 29th pick, but how do the intervening 14 picks work?

For example, the picks from 25-28 are as follows (25 first): Vancouver, Washington, Montreal, SJ. If it was based on playoff performance, shouldn’t the Caps come before the ‘Nucks, given they went out in the first round & Vancouver went out in the second? If it’s based on points in the regular season, why are the Habs picking so late? What’s the system?

by Germware on Jun 25, 2010 6:36 AM CDT reply actions

Picks 24-28 are determined

Picks 27 & 28 are the Conference Final runner ups (Montreal & San Jose) Montreal gets the 27th pick because they had less regular season points than San Jose.
Picks 24-26 are the balance of the Division winner based on regular season points (Washington / Vancouver / New Jersey and Buffalo)

Hope this makes some kind of sense.

I think our fearless alcoholics have forsaken the draft in favor of Cup drunkeness.

We haven’t seen a draft run-down, no prospect profiles, nothing. Were it not for the other assorted SBN blogs doing draft coverage (ahem, links would have been nice, SCH), I wouldn’t have known much about the various prospects.

But at the same time, WE WON THE FUCKING STANLEY CUP. This blog covered more and more deeply into the playoffs than any other. This blog covered a historic event, on the evening of that win. This blog gave so many of us a safe haven.

So I’m not casting stones when I say there hasn’t been coverage of the draft. I wish there had been, yes, but it’s understandable. And at the end of the day, we will have drafted the same talent. We will have picked the same people. The wishes of the fans have no effect on the efforts of the scouts who prep for this year-in/ year-out. So why not just enjoy it? This is an adventure: sometimes sad, sometimes joyous, sometimes ambivilent. That’s hockey. I feel like this is ‘soak it in’ time, before the reality of the regular season starts.

We won the fucking Stanley Cup. At this point, nothing else matters.

by spokeinthebandwagon on Jun 25, 2010 12:03 PM CDT up reply actions

First of all, I was being semi-sarcastic. Secondly,

this blog matters because you KNOW the Hawks brass, Chicago media, and very knowledgeable hockey people read this blog and get most of their good ideas from here. How will Stan know who to draft if our boys and girl don’t have it covered here? Why do you think we won the Cup? Clearly, the coaches listened to gmh and the alkies.

I ran into that motherless fuck at the Starbucks on Ohio and State last year, a few days before Game 1 between the Hawks and Red Wings. We stuck up a small conversation and he asked if I watched the show. I said I occasionally watched PTI ( I said this on purpose as he hates Kornheiser) but that none of those shows talked about hockey so I tuned out (another lie I watch all the time) during the NHL playoffs.

He responded to me by saying that basketball was what people wanted to hear about and that nobody liked hockey.
