Fraser To Edmonton For A Sixth Round Pick? Wild Rumors On An Early Thursday Morning
I haven't seen much at this point... just a bunch of people on Twitter talking but the rumor is that Frazz is off to the city no one loves anymore and the Hawks are getting a sixth rounder in return. I may fall asleep before we get any official confirmation on this
Also, since I haven't been able to post anything about this all day... let me just say: USA! USA! USA!
UPDATE: There's a lot of noise on the Oilers side of this saying this deal is official but nothing so far from the Hawks side. Either way.. I'm going to bed now.

What happened? Did they score a 92nd minute group-winning goal to avoid bowing out of the World Cup or something?

Depending on how hot the English girl is
I believe “suck it England” counts as a pick up line

I'm just gonna go right ahead and use this...

Near Lincoln. I’ve never been to England before, and know little of what to expect. Probably going to continue drinking Boddington’s religiously.
It's the Chicago Blackhawks man...
I don't either
Isn’t Frazz worth more than a 6th rounder? I feel like he can play higher than 4th line center on another team though, and certainly in Edmonton I hope he could get that at least.
I am starting to think I am the only who does not care for soccer

nooooo not the Fro!!!
I really thought Frazz had earned a more solid spot on this team, but if this is true (Rogers has “according to a league source”) he will definitely be missed.
Somehow I don’t understand how the revolving-doghouse-door works on this team but if it helps us keep everyone else, thank you Colin, for taking it for the team one last time — and not just with your face!
what could Frasier expect to have made next year? I mean, he only made $700k last year, so I’m not sure he’s much help in clearing cap space.
Can’t say I understand this move. Maybe for a 3rd round pick, but a 6th rounder?
I speculated below
Maybe so we have tagging room to even tender offers to the other RFAs. Otherwise, I’m with ya — I don’t know how it’s helping to do this now.
Like VerStig says, I think this speaks to roster and cap complexities that my small mind can’t sort through. You wouldn’t make this kind of move unless it made things easier elsewhere to solidify some other key component. As to a third-rounder for Frazz? Love the guy, but I don’t think he would bring back that kind of pick. Maybe Frazz and a 6th might get us that high, cause keep in mind that 3rd rounder, from Edmonton anyway, is basically a late 2nd-rounder.
www.mjt.org
Think he is worth more than a 6th round pick. I understand needing that extra $900+ when you want Niemi and Hjammer. Also, I believe the Hawks need to re-sign Skille and Bickell so that money should come in handy.
let's not forget that the erlers are getting Tyler Hall
Everyone starts somewhere, the Blackhawks weren’t Stanley Cup winners 3 years ago.
Who am I kidding? It’s no comparable.
Playing time
Fraser should get a chance to play a little more at least.
How about this rumor!!???
http://twitter.com/NHLSourcesSay
And maybe Ladd…if you can’t beat em’…well…you know…hire em!
wonder who
the prospect might be. I’m assuming it’s not going to be one of their top 5, since the Hawks are already getting a first rounder. But If it includes goaltending prospect Cory Schneider, I think this would be the steal of the young decade.
Vancouver will be very, very good next year.
Is a first rounder really worth that much?
Seeing as how the draft is a crapshoot, I would feel like this is a pretty bad deal unless it’s an excellent prospect.
That said, as people are saying all over — “NHLSourcesSay is not a legit source”
i definitely
agree that the draft is a crapshoot. But a 1st rounder and a goaltending prospect like Cory Schneider could very much help me forget about Steegs.
Don't like giving the Nucks our guys...
Dammit don’t do any deals with those assholes in Vancouver.
Ladd or Steeg to Vancouver still aint Cheli to Detroit but it sure as hell would sting more than Buff to ATL.
Imagine losing a series to Vancouver with Kris fucking Versteeg netting the winner.

I really
don’t get the Vancouver hate. We’ve eliminated them the past two years, we won the cup and I’ll be happy if we get one of the better goalie prospects in the league.
I would agree that I’d rather our top guys go to teams that aren’t Cup contenders, but my #1 concern is shoring up our development system where we are not only weak, but where we really could see a big upside, with a really good player.
Then again, we’re obviously dealing in hypotheticals here. We don’t know that Steegs is going to Vancouver and we don’t know what’s being offered.
I dont get how you dont get the Vancouver hatred. They are the biggest collection of d-bags in the NHL and thats saying something with the St..Louis Blues around.
I just sort of assume now that we will face Vancouver in the playoffs and them having one of our go to guys pisses me off.
I would not be willing to make one of our main rivals a better hockey team when our return is a late 1st Rd pick which is basically nothing when you consider how much of a crapshoot the draft is.
I understand the reality but am angered by it.
Can you image how much we would all hate Versteeg as a Canuck?

As much as we would love him Hjammer.
I have to tell you though, the prospect would NOT be Cory Schneider. He is pencilled in as the backup, and they know how good he is.
He will play 20 or so games to increase his value, and maybe go at the deadline next year.
If I was to guess, I would say the 25th and someone like Anton Rodin…or maybe someone else, we have a lot of prospects. Shirokov…you guys need a Russian right?
I get the hatred by the way guys. Its mutual, and fun. Unlike Burish though, I would have a beer with you guys.
And I have to disagree with the D-bag characterization…
;-)
Yeah I don't think you're worse than the Blues in that department
Well, maybe it’s a toss-up, but at least you guys can play hockey :-P
Im sure you would love both Steeg and Ladd. The reason you guys outrank STL on the D-Bag list is its understandable that a group of talentless fucks like the Blues would goon it up now and then. The Nucks actually have talent yet still feel the need to engage in endless bullshit after the whistles…..plus the hair-pulling still lingers and the Kesler dive which I will never forget….

That series had just an unbelievable amount of douchebaggery, including an ongoing Bieksa/Crombeen dick measuring contest that unfortunately resulted in no serious injuries.

Please.
Not to start a flame war, but you guys used up all residual lingering “issues” with the flopping and diving of Madden, Bolland,Kopecky, and anyone wearing a Hawks jersey in games 3-4.
Burish was on his back more than a five dollar hooker, and even Toews caught the bug in Game 3…flying through the air from a dive to forearm shiver Bobby Lou after the slightest of touches by a defenseman…Hey…whatever it takes right?
Hey, it worked, and the refs bought it. You can’t argue with the results either…
The little hacks on the hands of Danny Sedin to get him off his game. The constant slashes to the legs, the bullshit after the whistle.
The Canucks were at fault for losing their fonzie, but come on!
The Hawks don’t, and haven’t, played like some wonderfully clean Lady Byng team.
Sorry to burst your bubble.
I have visited SCH in the past…but thanks for the welcome, BTW…
;-)
not too worried about wearing out your welcome?
I’ll give you the slashes and hacks post whistle, but the claims of rampant diving are BS.
Ditto for CNS
Look.
Not to get into it…and if someone telling you the truth bothers you…sorry.
But try and watch the games on your PVR without the fan hat on.
I can remember two off the bat…Madden falling like he got shot when pushed after a whistle by the noted goon Daniel Sedin. Resulted in a GWG.
Kopecky doing the same behind the net when Edler did not even hit him. The aforementioned missile tackle by Tazer that looked like he had been training with Urlacher.
It is part of the game. But to say the Canucks are gooney douchebags when the Hawks actually did the douchey diving better…and helped themselves win the series..
Is just being a fan.
(BTW…I think it was mainly because I was looking forward to a more wide open, talent versus talent series. Every time the Canucks did that, they won or almost did. Every time the Hawks resorted to the goading and whatnot, they won. I felt cheated from watching high talent hockey for the whole series…hopefully the Canucks learnt from it this year. I don’t think I could handle a third in a row! )
I get it, its cool. Defend the flag against the hated rival. It doesn’t bother me.
I don’t really blame the Hawks…I blame the Canucks for falling into the trap of being goaded, and the refs for having the eyesight or Mr Magoo….or being “choosey” in who gets a break.
Like I said the day they won it, congrats tot he Hawks…they were the deeper and better team.
But they didn’t need to play that way.
Hope speaking the truth is not “wearing out your welcome”.

My perceptions are not colored by homerism
In fact I do more bitching and moaning about the Hawks play than I do about the opponents during any given game. Ask anyone that sits around me during games. I rag on the Hawks mistakes constantly. In fact I’ve had non-season ticket holders sitting around me, that aren’t used to my whining about Hawks gaffes, think I was a fan of the opposing team. All of this by way of establishing that I’m as far from a “homer” fan, watching the game through rose colored glasses, as you can get.
So, I feel very comfortable and am absolutely confident in saying that this assesment of the Hawks play is just plain wrong. They do no more or less of the type of play you describe than every team in the league tries to get away with during the course of any given game. And it most certainly is not of the over the top theatrical nature that you describe.
If the Hawks engaged in the kind of behaviour you claim the majority of posters on this site are objective enough in their assessment of the home team that they would have called them on it long ago. In fact that is what is so refreshing about this site, it is almost entirely free of the kind of idiotic, jingoistic homerism that is rampant on other sprots team blogs.
Sorry for the rant. But felt I had to defend our team and SCH reputation from spurious accusations.

he's been around here before
and as i remember, treated the SCHers who went over to NM fairly well, so i’m willing to cut him some slack.
i think this is just a case of the teams being so similar. Neither team falls into St. Louis goon territory. I have no love for Kesler, but we’ve all admitted we’d probably love him if he played for us. Bolland is annoying, but he’s not a douche and he does what he does well…get good players off their game.
But you’re dead wrong about Kopecky vancitydan — as mentioned below, there’s just something wrong with the world in a game where Kop doesn’t fall over and lose his helmet for no reason. that’s not diving.

So maybe Burwood is still on for the fourth?
by shinkicker on Jun 24, 2010 8:03 AM CDT via mobile up reply actions
I'm really hoping that
Sharp stays at second line center and Bolland gets another year on the third in the checking line role.
If Bolland has a full, somewhat injury-free year, and makes the necessary offensive progress, then in 2011-2012, give him the 2nd line role.
This team has a much better chance of a repeat with sharp at 2nd line center…for the time being. I suppose they could got out and get a second line center, but I doubt they could make room for it.
Ditto for CNS
Yeah
There’s no reason why he can’t score from the 3rd line either. I mean, after reading all that C&B analysis, I’m really starting to believe the “offense is the best defense” mantra, because scoring is largely what Bolland’s line did.
if it ends up that we somehow keep ladd and steeg
I’d really like to see Q start the season with the same boll-ladd-steeg checking line. That is a dynamic 2 way checking line (much like Havlat was with those two), and I think that the checking line role and it’s responsibilities have made steeg a better player and will expedite his growth going forward.

From capgeek
F Fraser, Colin " RFA – $0.7m
I don’t know that we’re saving terribly much (over on C&B they figure they should be able to keep him for $0.9-1.0m) but maybe after doing the math, Stan figured every little bit counts. And I’d rather lose our fourth liners to teams where they can have a bigger role than to lose our better players to teams that play us often.
If you lose a RFA
because you can’t match an offer don’t you pick up a favorable draft pick? If that is the case they should have seen what another team could have offered and decided to match or let him walk.
But I may have messed up information and am talking out of my ass.

I thought the Buff trade would've solved this
but I wonder if we did this to make sure we had enough tagging room to tender offers to the rest of our RFAs. We might not have gotten an offer for Fraser, and maybe Bowman’s estimates for Hjammer and Ladd are higher than we think?
Ladd just became more valuable to this team
after they dealt Buff. Ladd is a good power forward. Hjammer this season showed he is a huge asset. What does our 3rd line D look like as of now? I thought Boynton and Hendry were both free agents. Does this mean LaLonde will get a shot at playing on the 3rd line?

There is no way they can move Huet either. And as valuable as Campbell was for the playoffs (and how bad the team was during his injury) I still think that 7.2 million dollar deal is too high for him but I doubt they’ll trade or find a taker on Phantom.
So that leaves Versteeg, Sharp, and possibly Bolland? er.

At least one of Versteeg and Ladd is gone, methinks. I need to do the math to actually figure it out, though.
I think Lalonde is a sure
thing at this point. We’ll probably keep Hendry and let Boynton go. What would our D lines look like next year?
Teeth/Bizcuit
Campbell/Hendry
Hammer/Lalonde
If Lalonde was able to grow extremely quick, the Hawks could enjoy 3 very capable two-way defensemen.
If they re-sign hammer
he’s going to get top 4 money and he’s going to get top 4 minutes. Why would he move down to the third pairing?
Ditto for CNS
yeah it'll be the regular season again
it’ll be okay to ice a meh third-pairing against a lot of the teams we’ll be playing
not necessarily 3rd paring
I’m just pairing guys up. It makes little sense to have Campbell and LaLonde together and I fear that LaLonde and Hendry could be a disaster.
I don’t see Hammer getting top 4 money this coming year.
I suppose I'd have to do a little more research to verify this
but I’d guess that 2.5 or 3 mil and up is top 4 money, and I think he may come in around this number.

No way he signs that. I’d be insulted if I were him and the Hawks offered that, actually. And yes, you take those picks, but I highly doubt anyone’s going to be willing to give that up for a #4 defenseman.

Lalonde has less than 10
AHL games. That is not a lot at all, especially for a defenseman. He’s also only 20, and there are only a handful of Doughtys in the world. I would be really surprised if he’s ready.
Wouldn’t the team want him to get a lot of playing time? He’s not going to do that up here – the AHL is probably a better decision for him. Maybe we’ll see him called up periodically but full time? I’m just not sold yet.

I agree. He was a middle-tier prospect with promise before he busted out last year. The best thing possible for him would be to spend the year in Rockford. I can see him getting a couple of games in during October, but he’d definitely do better getting 20 minutes a game in the AHL instead of 6 or 7 here.
www.mjt.org
LaLonde
could be better off getting seasoned in Rockford next season, but he’ll be with the big club. I’d be surprised otherwise.
because LaLonde is > than Connelly in terms of upside, even as young as LaLonde is right now.
We could see Connelly instead, but I’d still be surprised if it wasn’t LaLonde.

Let's Not Deify Frazz
He was a 4th line center…..barely…sometimes….not in the playoffs for 2 years. Let’s give some young guys a chance. We saw what Fraz could do, and it’s marginal at best.
Fraser
I thought trading Fraser gave a hint on Bowman’s plans for next year. I’m thinking they are going to go with a 20 player team. Then bring up players from the AHL as needed. When the Hawks got a 4th line center back on the Buff trade that meant Fraser and Madden were no longer needed.
Good news for the Hawks
sources are saying the cap will be increased by 2.6 million.

Nice moves
These two moves were excellent moves by the Hawks. Fraser was nothing more than a 4th line/healthy scratch player and to get a pick for his rights is excellent. I was never of fan, but he played well for 3 weeks at the end of the season, so I respect that.

Stockpiling Picks
So the Hawks are loading up on picks right now. Not a terrible move for a team trying to unload a lot of $$$. Think it might be possible that they dangle a couple good draft picks with Huet to make him more enticing to a team with cap space and need of picks?
It would really be a miracle

Chicago Blackhawks - 2010 Stanley Cup Champions
Things have changed forever, we're the Ramblin' Boys of Pleasure
it's a great move,
along with getting near NHL prospects from other teams. We currently have one of the best cores in the league, we’re young, we have capable prospects in Beach and LaLonde and while we may not win the Cup again next year, we’ll still be damn good and increase our chances of another run at multiple championships in a few years time.
I think these are the best moves to have Detroit Redwing type success.
Huet’s going nowhere. Unless another team can eat the high salary for two years, piss off their fan base for making a backwards move.
Never Know
Some goalies get injured during training camp or early on and Huet looks a little better. There will ALWAYS be some GM or coach that will think he can fix Huet. Worst comes to worst we’ll have some high scoring games in Rockford.
Yeah, but remember how good Huet can be?
The Capitals got an amazing run from him heading into the playoffs in the season before he signed with us. My problem with him has never really been the quality of his play (think back to Game 5 vs. Detroit last playoffs), but the consistency of his play. If he can play consistently at or near the top of his game, you could argue he’d be well worth the money…
bingo.
I think chicago was one of the worst possible places to harbor the growth of a guy like this too. I realize it’s hoping against hope at this point, but I maintain that the guy could still string it together and be great in the future. At this point, it’s just very unlikely he’ll get another chance to do this, since nobody’s willing to pay him the chappelle money.
It's the Chicago Blackhawks man...
agree/disagree
agree that Huet is inconsistant. Agree that he can be very good for periods of time.
disagree that anyone would want to “fix” one of the highest paid goalies in the leage, one that turns 36 next year and someone that is yet to play over 48 games in one season.
Even Jimmy Howard has notched a 60+ game season.
He played 52 in 07/08 (you counted the season he was traded as 2 seasons)
but your point still stands. I wasn’t implying anyone would be willing to take the risk, just pointing out that it isn’t outwith the realms of possibility for him to become a great goalie.
Also, I must admit I forgot he is as old as he is.
so far i like all that the hawks are doing

I didn’t see all the goals against, but that last goal he gave up — the goalie did the right thing, the finish by the Slovakian players was fantastic though, The scorer got through in the first place but busting ass on a throw in while 2 or 3 Italian defenders just watched him streak past them.
I definitely put a lot of blame on the Italian D, but their offense also failed to show life until they were down by 2 goals with 20 min left to play. so I blame their O too. Blame all around.

Its no big secret that I am a HUGE fan of Burish. I love what he brings to the team. It is the intangibles, and he just plays smart, solid hockey. He brings the energy and he draws a strangely disproportionate number of penalties for his TOI.
I love the guy for that stuff. He’s not expensive, he’s the kind of player that they can probably sign to a 12 year, 13 – 15 million dollar contract, and he would never stop playing the same way.

I'm getting confused
why are people continually confusing “best wishes/thanks for the past year” with “OMGNOOOOOOOO WE LOST BELOVED ”?
When we lose a player from our Stanley Cup team, of course we’re going to be sentimental about their contributions. And from my readings, the only reason people are upset with the Frazzle trade is they thought we could’ve gotten more than a R6 draft pick, and people will miss Sopel for his classiness off the ice and willingness to take the puck on the ice.
I don’t think we’ll see crazed “OMGNOOOOO” style posts until we trade VerBeauty or Ladd (depending on what we get back). So far everything has been pretty even-tempered, so I don’t get why people seem to think these comments are all effused with loving praise for our dearly-departed.
thank you
since when did missing a player’s contributions off-ice or thanking them for what they did while here fall into the category of “unreasonable?” I didn’t think we’d keep Frazz, and although i’m not sure this move really helps our cap woes, it’s fine as a business decision.
But did it make me happy to see a Hawks player sporting a curly red-haired fro during the playoffs. Of course! and if you tell me you didn’t enjoy that, you’re lying. Don’t lie to me.

there's a scattering of Asian players around but
Jim Paek was the first native-born player (born in S. Korea) to play in the NHL (Penguins, 90-93 – I think I still have his NHL card somewhere) and has 2 Stanley Cups with the Pens.
There were a couple guys before him, but they were either halpa or only played 1 period of 1 game.
Now there’s a bunch, but most are half-asian. Richard Park is still playing in the NHL and Fukufuji (the Kings goalie) is in Europe now, I think.
While I was there from 94 - 97
I played for “Team USA” against a lot of Japanese University teams and got to go to an international tournament that they hosted.
They do play, and they’re not great at it. They do play as one would expect them to. Very deliberate and methodical, you don’t see a lot of impressive creativity on the ice. They skate within the confines of their system and do it well, but nothing exceptional.
Of course, I wrote that in present tense, based upon my experience between 94 and 97. Things might have changed since then, I guess.

N. America – 1/2
Still 2 more teams to be awarded spots Europe will either end up with 6 or 7 advancing teams and S. America will end up with either 4 or 5, depending how Chile does against Spain.
I don’t know if the Dutch will fuck it up this year. They’re probably feeling pretty comfortable, almost like they were playing at home. It wouldn’t surprise me if most of the whites in South Africa were now supporting the Oranje, and that’s got to count for something, eh?
I quite like the Dutch
and generally support them. They’ve never really seemed “bad” going into a tournament, but I always think they should do better. A lot like Spain, actually.
Same here, but I do think the language and cultural histories of the two countries might make this a good World Cup for them.
i wouldn't mind seeing the Dutch win
them and Spain were the two European teams id picked to make a deep run. plus, they’ve never won it.
Though to be fair, if your country isn’t Italy, England, France, West Germany, Uruguay, Brazil, or Argentina , then you’ve never won it. Plus England and France only won it once, and Germany hasn’t since reunification. This would be the reason the only ones I don’t want to see win are Brazil, Argentina, or Italy.
by puppetmasterp on Jun 24, 2010 3:07 PM CDT up reply actions
I never want to see England win it. That would be the worst possible thing that could happen to world football. The US winning a World Cup would be one of the best, because if the US can ever play at that level, we’ll probably push the development of the game in exciting directions that it never would have gone otherwise (and those directions would probably be antithetical to the English ethic).
I also never want to see a Dunga-coached side win. That would be almost as bad as England winning another title.
The English winning
would be even worse for British sports TV/media in general. The Scottish, Welsh & Northern Irish all hear about 1966 enough as it is, we don’t wanna hear about 2010 (or any other year) the same amount.
well this year
they certainly don’t deserve it, just as the french an italians didn’t deserve to move on. So no, i don’t want England to win this one. If they ever develop enough talent though, that doesn’t consist of self-entitled brats like Rooney, I might consider being ok with the idea of them winning
by puppetmasterp on Jun 24, 2010 3:18 PM CDT up reply actions
I actually generally like English players
like Lampard, Gerard, Dafoe, etc. but I really, really don’t want to have to deal with the inevitable blanket media coverage from now until the heat death of the Universe about it should they win.
i like many of them as well, like Lampard, and obviously i like Gerrard. But there are also a fair share of prima donnas that annoy me. And internationally, they just don’t play well together.
by puppetmasterp on Jun 24, 2010 3:23 PM CDT up reply actions
I don't know
Rooney, Lampard, Gerrard and Ferdinand are all world-class (when they turn up), but England seem to be very good at making a few excellent players and then not being able to back them up with a good enough supporting cast. Not that I’m complaining, mind you.
I don't know that much about soccer...
But I watched England vs USA a while back… Isn’t Huet England’s Goalie?

true, the Slovakians looked great today. Slovenia also looked good, even though they aren’t advancing. But overall, this has not been Europe’s year. And that’s not even counting the fact the Swedes didn’t even qualify for the World cup this year, and they are usually World Cup mainstays. I think the most dominant-looking teams are from Latin America.

Capable of giving you some energy shifts and producing respectable 4th line numbers with the time that he gets.

The bulls now have room for 2 max deals
before the hinrich trade, the general consensus was that they could sign one max deal and would have to do a sign and trade with a guy like deng or hinrich involved to get the other max deal.
I’m coining a new phrase……Bulls are going after “LeBosh”
Ditto for CNS
i've also seen
the possibility of Johnson and Bosh. I don’t know much about basketball, but wouldn’t that also be a pretty excellent line-up? Bosh, Johnson, Rose, Noah and Deng?
yeah, I'll take Johnson
but I’m afraid they’ll overpay for him. Not sure if he should get a max deal and the bulls might give him one if they don’t get LeBron. It’s also possible that they could miss out on Bosh and get a Boozer type guy, who they’d also overpay. However you slice it, the team should be a big time contender.
Ditto for CNS
Bosh wants to be a centerpiece

Who is Johnson?
I’m entirely serious. I don’t follow basketball at all and I honestly don’t remember hearing about a player with the last name Johnson. Is this Joe Johnson, who Wikipedia just told plays for Atlanta?
I'm fairly behind
But yes, he’s a pretty good player who plays for Atlanta. Last time I followed basketball he was still with Phoenix, and a pretty good shooter if I remember correctly.
You missed an 's'. He's the dude who died for us prior to the playoffs.
Just kidding, I know nothing about basketball. But for the next little while, Johns(s)on is a name that doesn’t inspire confidence.

This Japanese game reminds me of their opener in ‘06. The Australians were down by two with ten minutes left and won the game. That’s probably not happening today, but it’s worth keeping in mind.
The Japanese do not know how to hold a lead for the victory.
My eye test
which is probably horrible due to my 0.1 soccer IQ and the fact I’m watching without audio (more glancing up from my work… and uh, SCH, occasionally) tells me they look very offensively minded (and it’s worked very well for them so far). Can they play defense?

b/c goalies don’t usually give up the rebound, or else the kick ends up out of bounds
by puppetmasterp on Jun 24, 2010 3:11 PM CDT up reply actions
You’re putting the ball into play, same as any other kick. Are there any soccer law experts out there who can tell me if a guy can put in his own rebound off the post or cross bar, without it having touched another player?
Yeah, you got it spot-on
it’s putting the ball into play. You can even pass it to another player on your team, if you particularly want (as seen here).
Do you remember that great missed penalty for Arsenal where Jose Reyes was supposed to tap the ball to Henry, but Reyes’ boot slipped off the ball and it basically didn’t move, so suddenly this streaking Henry goes running by without a ball? Of course, Reyes couldn’t touch it a second time, because he’d just put it into play even though it hadn’t moved, and Henry was about twenty feet away. The whole thing was hilarious.
I think it was Pires, but yeah
I’m pretty sure the ref didn’t notice the ball had been hit – barely – and so the penalty was retaken & scored when it shouldn’t have been. Nevertheless, funny as fuck.
No, they cant.
From FIFA Laws of the Game:
• After the players have taken positions in accordance with this Law, the
referee signals for the penalty kick to be taken
• The player taking the penalty kick must kick the ball forward
• He must not play the ball again until it has touched another player
• The ball is in play when it is kicked and moves forward

FOR SALE: pair of shoes, red, size 32 1/2 wide. Please direct all bids to Joel Quenneville, Chicago Blackhawks. Clown horn sold seperately. Also for sale: 328 dogs+1 pistol (bargain price for Leafs fans!)
by BigCSouthside on Jun 24, 2010 4:15 PM CDT up reply actions
In short, I’m okay with both deals.
The Hamhuis deal is good because we got actual value (Ryan Parent, draft pick) for a guy who we were never going to keep and was a free agent. Ryan Parent can come in as the 6th defenseman and fill that role quite nicely, especially considering he’s good on the penalty kill which we need. While at first glance it doesn’t look like we need another D, it was a savvy move.
As for Arnott, quite simply, it was time. You knew that the real leadership in the locker room was Weber, Suter, and Sullivan, and it showed on the ice. Arnott didn’t give good effort and whined. I fully expect Weber (or Suter) to be named captain in the next few months.
More importantly, and considering the small return we got for Arnott, this was a salary dump (4.5) by Poile. Matt Halischuk is nothing special, and the 2nd rounder is in 2011. I fully believe this move was made to go get a higher-ish level point producer such as Stephen Weiss in FLA while Colin Wilson works his way into the 1C hole left by Arnott. After Arnott and Hamhuis’ salaries are gone, we have $9m in actual spending money, not just money to the cap. Look for Nashville to be a dark horse in free agency or trade.
Final grade? Probably a B+.

yeah, my first reaction was “looks like they’re clearing room to go after bigger fish…” Plus Parent’s had hi issues getting back to form this last year, and if any team is a good place for a fledgling d-man to get his confidence back, it’s probably Nashville.
by puppetmasterp on Jun 24, 2010 4:27 PM CDT up reply actions
Parent has had a similar back problem to Steve Sullivan. The belief here is that Poile thinks the team trainer can do the same for Parent as Sully.
And yeah, we have two of the NHL’s best defensive prospects in the system to bring up if he fails, and he’s going to be hiding behind Weber, Suter, Franson, and Klein anyway.

So you found Skyline Chili, eh?

7 hrs, but then I live in South Carolina, not Chi-town
I don’t know how long the drive is from Chicago (from people that I talked to when I attended game 6 of the first round this year, it’s less that 8 hrs), but Nashville’s a pretty cool city, especially around the stadium. You could probably do the drive with only one day off, and since I’m pretty sure all the Hawks’s dates next year come on weekends, it could be an awesome field trip. Hook up with someone from in town to show you amazing barbeque and damn good beer, and you’ve got yourself a weekend. Tickets are cheap (because even in the playoffs, where I bought mine, they were looking to fill seats), hockey is surprisingly good, food is fantastic.
From someone who roadtripped out for the playoffs this year, Nashville is worth the driving!

More eveidence that Mariotti is an idiot
i don’t know why Around the Horn was on my tv just now, but they were debating the recent NHL trades, and Mariotti was livid about getting rid of Buff….he feels we should have gotten rid of Sharp or Steeger, but Buff was the wrong one to trade.
it was at this point that I started thinking maybe Mariotti and Mike Milbury were clones from the same set of genes…..

Also acceptable
playing them the clip of Roenick saying “It’s the Chicago Blackhawks, man…” and checking for tears.
I'd amend with - "as compared to Sharp."
I would speak very very warmly of Buff.
But since I’m not retarded, I would not infer that Buff > Sharp.
Also, anybody with half a brain should be able to see why his leaving was the inevitable/correct thing to happen.
It's the Chicago Blackhawks man...
I think that’s a huge refinement, ya. I’m a bit more of a Buff lover than is the norm here at SCH. We can all argue all we want about what happened, but the small simple fact is that it had to happen, there were no choices in the matter. And the fact that we got 2 high picks and one prospect with good hands in return … that’s more than I bargained for considering every team in the league knew we were in trouble. I honestly wonder if we would have got the same return for Sharp (I think he is more valuable, but I don’t know if the market would have thought the same). Buff’s value was at its peak, probably never to be higher, and Stan took proper advantage of it.

from what I hear
a LOT of teams are asking for Sharp. The answer is no. Some GMs thought Buff’s price was too high. Some still think Versteeg’s price is too high. I think Sharp would have warranted more than a cap dump, personally.

as much as mariotti is an idiot,
I’m happy that someone on ESPN is talking about hockey in the offseason. and the fact that they were talking about an inconsistent top-6 forward and not crosby vs. ovechkin makes me happy.
don’t get me wrong, I’d rather he didn’t speak like a jackass, but at least it’s things like this that are starting to put the NHL on the map. if a segment on around the horn gets a few more hockey fans, it’s worth the idiocy. new fans don’t start out by knowing everything, but they can learn.

Mariotti is a joke.
Only in the world of Mariotti (or anyone else who only watches 6.5 hockey games a year for that matter) would you consider Byfuglien a more valuable piece than Sharp. christ. I think we hosed Atlanta on that one, and judging by the reaction over at their SB blog, they think they got hosed as well. They all wanted sharp for what they gave up. Can’t say I blame them, there is no way that Byfuglien was actually worth a first round pick and a prospect that was taken in the second round (Morin). Hats off to Bowman on that one.

Although, like it’s been said, ATL may have nabbed the dark horse gem if Buff becomes Playoff Buff full time.
It's the Chicago Blackhawks man...
and if he does
thankfully he’s in the EC. Although maybe becoming beloved in Atlanta might motivate him?
If playing on the best team in the league in front of SRO crowds every game can't motivate you
I really don’t think a change of scenery to Atlanta will. Though, if anything will motivate him, it’s that he’s in a contract year.
Agreed.
If I had to make a guess, I’d say Buff’s productivity declines markedly in the ATL. He had Chi-town crowds, amazing coaches, and some of the best players in the league as his captain/alts/linemates to motivate him this year. Atlanta gives him none of those things. If I were a betting person, I’d put heavy money on a steep Buff decline, and maybe on Atlanta trading him again within the next three years.

I wonder if being surrounded by less elite talent
might light a fire under his ass. If he slacks off, Toews, Kane, Hossa, Sharp, Keith et all won’t be around to work hard for him. So maybe he picks up his effort/intensity to a higher level more consistently.
Or he’s just regular season Buff, with more eyes on him more often, because all this other guys aren’t there.

Yeah
I just read that after I posted. Thats what I get for not re-researching stuff I remember from last year.
TSN Mock Draft
Just had the ’Hawks selecting with the 24th pick Riley Sheahan a centre from Notre Dame. Not amazing numbers in his freshman year but is heavily regarded as an excellent two-way centreman.
And with the 30th pick they had the ‘Hawks select Jordan Weal. Considered a little too small but still managed to net 102 points in the WHL this season with the Regina Pats. Everything I’ve read about this kid is impressive and I hope the ’Hawks grab him either with this pick of the 24th pick.
2010 STANLEY CUP CHAMPIONS
It's been a long journey but in the end it was all worth it, and I wouldn't have ever changed a thing. The feeling is so surreal, yet so real.
I get the feeling we’re going to go for some large-bodied two-way players. Losing Eager, Buff, and Aliu, and taking on Morin, we’re smaller than I’d like right now. Lots of ways to address this, of course, but it’s just a feeling.
www.mjt.org
I tend to agree that a bit of size will be a factor
Preparing my psyche for the coming Capocalypse
Confusion will be my epitaph.
I agree to the extent that we’ve lost some size in the Byfuglien deal, but this kid Weal is the real deal (and, yah, I know that’s bad) and can play anywhere at the forward position. He’s got quick hands and a wicked release and could be a steal @ 24 or 30 should the ’Hawks wait that far to take him.
Although I’m a big fan of size, I’d take skill over size anyday.
2010 STANLEY CUP CHAMPIONS
It's been a long journey but in the end it was all worth it, and I wouldn't have ever changed a thing. The feeling is so surreal, yet so real.
According to TSN
Florida Panthers’ general manager Dale Tallon is shopping 15th overall.
He’s willing to package another player with it to attract an offensive forward, or would consider a collection of draft picks in return.
Likely a trade that happens on the floor just before the selection, although a number of teams are interested.
Maybe this is where Versteeg ends up.
Maybe, just once, someone will call me 'Sir' without adding, 'You're making a scene."
15th OA in addition to the 24th and 30th in enticing
But Steeger is worth more than a 15 OA pick. This one still needs to be sweetened (I hope) before the Hawks bite, if they are players. I know we need to dump $, but we must getting something cable in return (less Huet, who needs to be just dumped, man to think I was one of the Huet supporters going into March!)

As the Core of the Deal I'm fine with
But I expect at least a prospect, or 4th liner maybe to go with it. 15th OA by itself, the Hawks can do better for Steeger.

Don't know why I feel compelled to post this in this particular spot, but....
After reading all of the comments and speculation I’ve read here and elsewhere over the last week or so I’m actually starting to think that we’re going to have the same tandem in goal next season.
Moving Huet in any sort of trade is starting to seem nigh on impossible and I just don’t get the feeling that the Hawks are willing to eat whatever portion of his contract they’d have to under any of the other scenarios put forth for relieving us of his services.
I think they’re going to shed as much salary as they can by moving other players and go with younger/cheaper alternatives to fill out the roster. Then lean much more heavily on our big guns next season.
"Life is a long lesson in humility."
- James M. Barrie
I... actually wouldn't be upset about that at all.
Okay, I’d be REALLY upset about paying 6 mill to a backup goalie, but if there were any way to ameliorate Huet’s salary, he’s a good player who would be an outstanding backup to take about half the games from Niemi and keep the pressure off our young goalie when it comes to the full season. We know that Huet can handle 40 games a year with alacrity, and I’d love to see him get a chance to prove himself in that atmosphere. I think it might help him get his confidence back.

Its a new day.
I really love how people that fell in love with the Hawks this past season are so pissed Byfuglien is gone. This is a new day in Chicago Sports if you are a Cubs fan and under 35. Our Team finally won a Championship, no longer do we have to build a team to win. We have to build a team to retain and get even better. I love the fact Stan is taking lessons from Pops and stock-piling. I also love that he is trying to undue the few mistakes Dale made. This is awesome and I am so excited for tomorrow and the draft!
"Mr. Probert, Can you please step out of the car."
I'm not overly thrilled he is gone
But certainly not pissed. Having that big body be able to park in front just added to the number of styles the Hawks could throw at a team, and was very important in the Playoffs. I’m just hoping it is not missed next season, if the Hawks can (and should easily be able to) adjust to not having that mountain in front of the net like they did with Buff, this was a very good trade, given return, CAP Clearance, and cost. I actually more bummed about Sopes, but he cost too much for a 3rd pairing D-man, but when your 3rd pairing starts with a player like Sopel, you have a pretty good D-Core!

But its a business and he made too much, Eager can go to Atlanta and be a moron, he lost my faith after he didn’t stand up for Seabrook against Wiz in Anaheim….Keep stock-piling those picks.

Beach is no Kane
even in his differing role.
I’m not saying he won’t pan out, but I don’t see him as being quite as readily ready for NHL play

NOW STOP IT RIGHT HERE
I'm over 35...
But not pissed at all. That being said I hate to see anyone leave that has made a great contribution to bringing the CUP back to Chicago. Buff certainly played a huge role in the playoffs as did Sopel, but it is a business and had to be done. As long as things don’t turn out like they did for the SOX, and I mean the team basically going from heros to has beens, I’m okay with the trades so far.
The thing that can kill a team over a season is lack of chemistry and injuries to key players. Injuries you can’t do much about, and chemistry just happens. I think the SOX lost some of that chemistry losing Rowand and it came back to haunt them. Losing Buff and Sopel I don’t think is nearly as big a deal. The Hawks can certainly score without Buff in front of the net and it’s just a matter of someone filling the role at times. Sopel was a role player on defense and hopefully someone else can step in, we’ll have a whole season to figure out who.
"adjust to not having that mountain in front of the net"
Funny, that. From a Felspost back in October:
That does not mean I’m actively advocating moving Buff. However, if the Hawks think they need to add a piece — say a #6 d-man or new goalie — someone’s got to go. Secondly, someone’s got to go to clear space for Cap Apocalypse in the summer anyway. Of the three most likely — Buff, Barker, and Versteeg — Buff is the most replaceable. It’s funny, for months last season Buff was the whipping boy around here. Then he has one good playoff series (and only one as he didn’t do much against either Calgary or Detroit) and suddenly he’s a hero. Since the opening two games of the season, Buff has done jack and shit this year. You have to get cheaper somewhere, and here’s one place you can. Not only would Brouwer have no problem getting to the front of the net as Buff does, but he’d do it quicker. He’s more responsible in his own zone, and isn’t nullified when playing speedier teams like Detroit.
I only have one question
are we going to play Stonhenge tonight?
How the fuck did you dig this up?
And one comment: I find the grouping of Buff, Barker, and Versteeg to be ominous.

Some might be poo-poo-ing the recent trades
but isn’t anyone else interested in the prospects we have in the system?
SHAMELESS PLUG ALERT!
let me know.
LETS GO HAWKS!!!!!!
"Blackhawk fans around the world, you have endured 49 years of frustration but your patience has finally paid off! Lord Stanley's new address is "SWEET HOME CHICAGO"! THE CHICAGO BLACKHAWKS HAVE WON THE STANLEY CUP! THEY'VE WON THE STANLEY CUP! ITS OVER! THEY'VE WON IT! THE CHICAGO BLACKHAWKS ARE STANLEY CUP CHAMPIONS!!!!" - John Wiedeman & Troy Murray, June 9th, 2010.
I've been meaning to ask this for a while
How does the draft system work? Obviously the 14 teams that don’t make the playoffs get the first 14 picks, with the order getting determined by regular season points combined with the Lottery, and the Cup winners get 30th pick and Cup runners-up get 29th pick, but how do the intervening 14 picks work?
For example, the picks from 25-28 are as follows (25 first): Vancouver, Washington, Montreal, SJ. If it was based on playoff performance, shouldn’t the Caps come before the ‘Nucks, given they went out in the first round & Vancouver went out in the second? If it’s based on points in the regular season, why are the Habs picking so late? What’s the system?
Picks 24-28 are determined
Picks 27 & 28 are the Conference Final runner ups (Montreal & San Jose) Montreal gets the 27th pick because they had less regular season points than San Jose.
Picks 24-26 are the balance of the Division winner based on regular season points (Washington / Vancouver / New Jersey and Buffalo)
Hope this makes some kind of sense.
Maybe, just once, someone will call me 'Sir' without adding, 'You're making a scene."
I'm glad you could make sense of it.
My brain doesn’t get along with the keyboard that well. It took me about 5 attempts to type out an explanation that made some kind of sense.
Maybe, just once, someone will call me 'Sir' without adding, 'You're making a scene."

but I got it. :)

Oh, that makes sense
I figured the Conference finalists had got the 27th & 28th picks, but I wasn’t able to work out the Division-winners part. Cheers.
So where's the draft preview?
Where are our fearless leaders to guide us through the ledge-luring capocalypse and draft day miracles? What other trades are in the works?
I want answers!

"I can't stop crying and laughing." Preacher
I think our fearless alcoholics have forsaken the draft in favor of Cup drunkeness.
We haven’t seen a draft run-down, no prospect profiles, nothing. Were it not for the other assorted SBN blogs doing draft coverage (ahem, links would have been nice, SCH), I wouldn’t have known much about the various prospects.
But at the same time, WE WON THE FUCKING STANLEY CUP. This blog covered more and more deeply into the playoffs than any other. This blog covered a historic event, on the evening of that win. This blog gave so many of us a safe haven.
So I’m not casting stones when I say there hasn’t been coverage of the draft. I wish there had been, yes, but it’s understandable. And at the end of the day, we will have drafted the same talent. We will have picked the same people. The wishes of the fans have no effect on the efforts of the scouts who prep for this year-in/ year-out. So why not just enjoy it? This is an adventure: sometimes sad, sometimes joyous, sometimes ambivilent. That’s hockey. I feel like this is ‘soak it in’ time, before the reality of the regular season starts.
We won the fucking Stanley Cup. At this point, nothing else matters.

First of all, I was being semi-sarcastic. Secondly,
this blog matters because you KNOW the Hawks brass, Chicago media, and very knowledgeable hockey people read this blog and get most of their good ideas from here. How will Stan know who to draft if our boys and girl don’t have it covered here? Why do you think we won the Cup? Clearly, the coaches listened to gmh and the alkies.

those commercials are awful
So let me get this straight, Tomario (see what I did there) just sits there and tells us about agents and then interupts the agents when they try to say something. That’s it, that’s the whole commerical?! I don’t even get what they’re trying to do with those. Do they think that Tomario cutting off the agent is funny, how could they?
Ditto for CNS
Is that the same Smack...
In the other State Farm commercials that roams coffee houses as the camera moves to waitresses and such? I hate most commercials so try to tune them out as much as possible, or miss half of what I was watching because I changed channels.

For those of you
who were following the Isner-Mahut match, here is a link to the Guardian’s live blogging of the day’s tennis. The commentary on the Isner-Mahut match starts at 3:45ish, and the blogging quickly descends into a journal of insanity, not unlike House of Leaves. Like the match, it is strangely engrossing.

Mariotti
I ran into that motherless fuck at the Starbucks on Ohio and State last year, a few days before Game 1 between the Hawks and Red Wings. We stuck up a small conversation and he asked if I watched the show. I said I occasionally watched PTI ( I said this on purpose as he hates Kornheiser) but that none of those shows talked about hockey so I tuned out (another lie I watch all the time) during the NHL playoffs.
He responded to me by saying that basketball was what people wanted to hear about and that nobody liked hockey.
Get fucked Jay Mariotti.
