Someone needs to tell Kane

that you don’t wear that color suit with a black shirt unless you’re an Italian in the 90s.

Its not so much Kane...

What do you expect? He’s from fucking Buffalo. Did you see how much of a fuckbag Tyler Myers looked like last night?

Also

Toews jacket almost looks too tight; like he is about to send that button flying at the camera.

I'm under the impression

that Toews has his arms on the back of the Patricks, which is why the suit is stretched. Silly boy, you should’ve unbuttoned the jacket if you were going to do that.

and wow, being the odd-color out + camera angle makes Kaner look even shorter than he already is. Poor boy. (The pants looking too long doesn’t help either – hah!)

LoL... Nice catch

Because as soon as I saw the picture, I was preparing my contribution to the witty banter:

Kaner’s suit looks like its off the rack (I guess he didn’t feel like ponying up the twenty cents for the in-store tailoring service).

Note to Toews: Take some of the Conn Smythe bonus money and invest in a couple of nice, tailored suits. I understand that you’ve had that lucky suit since before draft day, but if you go off the rack, you’ll look like Kaner.

Can’t say much about Duncs. He’s cleaned up real nice-like. Actually looks like he could be starring in a Grey Poupon commercial, instead of living in a shipping container formerly filled with Grey Poupon over on Kedzie.

My man Patrick Sharp – continues to live up to his name.

Ah… Q. Keep reppin’ for real, bro. Keep reppin.

This is what drives me insane about how much today's sports fan values statistics

Don’t get me wrong, stats are important and they are valuable for GMs and they do enhance one’s knowledge of the game, but let’s put this into perspective……

My team is 9 games under 0.500, I could give two shits about Soriano’s wins above replacement

i really hope something happens where

we can unload Huet, hold on to Ladd, Hammer, & Niemi (if we have to unload Versteeg, so be it. anything to keep Sharp since Sharp is, IMO, SO much more versatile than Steeger and can actually play with Kane and not look like a monkey fucking a football as someone so eloquently commented in my FanPost. ) AND THEN! SOMEHOW get Nino Niederreiter in the draft. I’ve been watching this guy since the WJC and he is a fucking STUD! C’mon, Stan. Work your magic!

“Anticipa-yay-tion is making me wait” … sigh.

ps – this is ridiculous with Zambrano. he blows up at LEE?? of ALL PEOPLE??? ugh.
i agree with you Katherine215, at least Huet has always been known as a great guy to have in the locker room and a selfless teammate. Thank you, Seattle, for Carlos Silva.

Sharp may be more versatile than Steeger

He’s a heck of a lot better as a center than Kris. But “SO”? With italics, really? They both play both ways. I’d argue that Sharpie is a more dependable player but I don’t think a guy who can also play in all situations is that bad in the versatility department.

Of course, if that ups his price, well, that’s a good thing, right?

by VerStig on Jun 25, 2010 4:28 PM CDT up reply actions

perhaps i just got ahead of myself

but this last season was Sharp’s what, 4th? 5th CONSECUTIVE 20 Goal Season?? pretty great since we had him playing a position he wasn’t used to and he was able to make a seamless transition doing it.

in Steeger’s defense, he has a lot of upside and being YOUNG is one of them because he has promise to pan out more. Great hands, great speed, and a real sick shot PLUS he was a mainstay of our Playoff “Checking Line”. Yes, Steeger plays both ends but i don’t remember anyone here ever calling Sharpy “Country Stupid”.

Don’t get me wrong, I’ve always liked Versteeg and thought it was a HUGE advantage that The Hawks had two players in Kane AND Versteeg on the roster, but the way i look at it, since BOTH Sharp and Steeger command a high salary, and the fact that we NEED to make room cap wise, i think you go with “who plays better with Kane”, and “who will get you your biggest return in a trade”. I say its Steeger to go only because Vertseeg’s youth has more upside as far as trade goes, Sharp plays exponentially better with Kane vs Kane playing with Steeger, and I keep thinking Marcus Kruger or Jeremy Morin might be able to fill Versteeg’s shoes in a couple of years.

Totally eating $5m on a Rockford or European player..

seems a bit much to ask, even for an organ-i-zation that has hardly made a misstep (fan-friendly wise) in three years. But I’m assuming that if Huet is traded to another NHL team, we’re going to have to pay some of the freight, and get less cap relief?

by The Deputy Mayor of Rush Street on Jun 25, 2010 4:44 PM CDT up reply actions

I didn't think hockey worked like that?

I read somewhere that you can’t have straight up cash in a deal. But that might be a “you can’t just buy good players from poor teams”. Or if you mean packaging Huey with Versteeg or whoever, we’ve been amenable to that idea for a few threads now.

by shinkicker on Jun 25, 2010 5:01 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions

It may not, as I said.. assuming here.

I’m just figuring no one would want Huet at $5m when you can probably get Nabokov for $3.5 or $4…

Just heard the NHL Network guys say that if we do exile Huet, we have to leave his cap hit on the books all the way to Opening Night. So if there’s any deal to be made before it’s time to start signing people, I’m sure Stan will be all over it.

by The Deputy Mayor of Rush Street on Jun 25, 2010 5:10 PM CDT up reply actions

The other option is buying him out.

which leaves us with 1.8 mil against the cap for the next 4 years, but still saves money.

And while Anahiem returns to the locker room, Todd Bertuzzi is cuffed and returns to the squad car.

by Detroit Must Die on Jun 25, 2010 6:06 PM CDT up reply actions

According to CapGeek

the Leafs have a salary of $51mil (making it impressive that they were as horribly incompetent as they were, tbh), so it would almost certainly not be them.

Likely teams – if this is the case – include the Blues, Islanders, Avs, Thrashers, Preds & Ducks. All these teams have salaries below $40mil at the moment.

by Germware on Jun 25, 2010 4:43 PM CDT up reply actions

Out of those

Only the Isle and Thrash make sense. But if Atlanta takes Huet, there should be a full scale investigation.

If I remember correctly, in the early days of the NHL the ’Hawks were on the other end of this at the hand of the Wings. We were on the wrong side of countless one-sided trades between the teams because the same guy owned both or something like that.

by Germware on Jun 25, 2010 4:45 PM CDT up reply actions

Just to clarify..

What I heard was that Huet may go to the Leafs.. or to a team that needs to get up to the minimum cap amount. Not that the Leafs need him to get to the minimum.

Maybe they’re short of their Federally-mandated Francophile quota in Toronto?

by The Deputy Mayor of Rush Street on Jun 25, 2010 4:53 PM CDT up reply actions

The Leafs

are paying Gustavsson 1.35 mil for the next two years and are paying Giguere 6 mil for next year. I can’t figure one single scenario in which they’d take Huet on.

CBA loans

The only reference to loaning players in the CBA is to NHL affiliated leagues. I know they have agreements with the other leagues but I don’t know where those agreements are stored.

It still looks like any of those loans only takes Huet off the books at the start of the season.

Niemi has received his qualifying offer. Ladd, Hammer, and Hendry have yet to receive theirs, per Jesse Rogers.
Qualifying offers are due on Monday, let’s not fuck this up again Stan and Co.

definitely at least Hammer...

but preferably both. Couldn’t care less about Hendry, we can find another #6 dman who didn’t just win a cup for cheaper.

I like the moves that have been made so far. I actually have watched Morin play, he’s not the greastest prospect ever, but he’ll be on the horizon for this team as a 2nd 3rd liner in a years time. Plus we’ve managed to keep sharp (so far). I honestly wouldn’t mind sending Versteeg over to Tallon for that 15th pick.

And while Anahiem returns to the locker room, Todd Bertuzzi is cuffed and returns to the squad car.

I'm sure

That Stan and Co., are trying to clear more salary cap room for qualifying offers. Wouldn’t be the first time that there have been trades during the draft.

by cubfred on Jun 25, 2010 5:19 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm fairly certain

that we have the cap room to give qualifying offers to Hammer, Ladd, and Hendry. The total in qualifying offers (including Nemo) is about 4 mil. Right now, capgeek shows us having 6 mil in cap room + the 10% tagging space = 12 mil. Capgeek might be off a few mil, with bonuses and whatnot, but I think were still in the clear.

Hayes could develop into a solid, two-way player, but his offensive potential may be limited. His skating could use some improvement if he wants to take his game to another level.

Skill

Interesting — according to the scouting report they have up on NHL.com:

NHL Central Scouting’s Gary Eggleston
“Kevin is a skilled power forward who plays with enthusiasm and drive. He has very good hands and is an excellent play maker. He is a strong skater with a long stride, and uses his long reach and puck protection to beat defenders. He has an excellent wrist shot with a sneaky quick release, and will shoot from any angle. He controls the puck very well in traffic, sees the ice very well, and finds the open man. He has a very good knack of playing the puck in his skates for a big player, often moving the puck from skates to stick without losing speed.”

by VerStig on Jun 25, 2010 9:27 PM CDT up reply actions

Could a guy slip in the draft rankings

because they plan on going to college instead of juniors? Maybe we value his not being on the payroll for a few years more than other teams would.

And I’m going to say this was the guy the Nucks wanted. Made the trade when we swooped him up ahead of their pick. So there.

PKane was insane one night here in the Nation’s Capital and everyone knew after his massive night that he was going to be something special. Speaking of the 67’s Toffoli would be a solid pick if Weal is already gone.

I have to disagree with that Russell, he’s good but not great. Hamhuis and Timonen territory where everyone says they excel when they never do. They’re solid positionally but don’t bring that extra tenacity that is needed to reach that next level like a Duncan Keith.

He’ll help out a porous defence in Vancouver but is really nothing more than a #4 defenceman and Dale seen that and moved him out of Sunrise.

From AOL Fanhouse on Hayes

From the Scouting Report: Hayes is a big, skilled high-school forward from Massachusetts. He’ll play a couple years at Boston College, where older brother Jimmy currently plays, and then head to the pros with a little more strength. He’s a bit of a reach, but there wasn’t much difference, frankly, between around 20-40 on many teams’ boards.

There are a lot of good forwards still available

Coyle, Bennett, Etem, Johansen, MacFarland, and then there’s still Merrill and Pickard. It’s really hard to say right now just who to go for. I do know that we need goalies, and I don’t want to go hunting the UFA’s unless it’s very, very late in the calendar.

Bob McKenzie: The California kid from Long Beach comes from a family of elite athletes and is arguably the fastest skater in the entire draft. With a hard, heavy shot that allows him to score off the rush from far out, it’s difficult to envision the Medicine Hat Tiger winger as anything but a mid-first round pick.

Now that we can't get the first rounder and a prospect..

doesn’t that tend to suggest that Ladd is on the way out, and Versteeg is more likely to stay now?

I’m guessing that Stan was favoring Ladd over Steeger (and remember, death is not an option) because Ladd would be about a million less next year.

And if we can somehow find a sucker to take Huey’s contract, maybe keep them both???

by The Deputy Mayor of Rush Street on Jun 25, 2010 10:55 PM CDT up reply actions

keeping them both

is not happening. much like finding someone for the huet contract is not likely. I’ve never expected us to keep Versteeg, Ladd was the one i was thinking we might be able to hang on to.

And to be honest, i think it’s selfish of us to want to keep him as it’s better for Versteeg to go somewhere else. We’ve mentioned several times during the regular season that Steeger’s place on a team with so much forward depth has stunted his development to some extent, and i still believe that now. It may be more fun for him to stay with his drinking buddy, Kane, but i think professionally it’s better for him to go somewhere where he’ll have more time to shine.

happy ninja is happy....and wants to share its new toy!

by puppetmasterp on Jun 26, 2010 12:26 AM CDT up reply actions

this type of thinking

has no place in professional sports.

besides, the hawks have given steeger plenty of opportunities the past two years. don’t feel he’s benn stunted at all.

A team wanting to keep a great player isn’t always the same as what’s best for the player. And me thinking so doesn’t make me any less of a Hawks fan.

by puppetmasterp on Jun 26, 2010 11:26 AM CDT up reply actions

no disrespect intended

clearly, teams’ interests and players’ interests don’t always coincide, but it’s up to the team to look out for its own interests.

If the Hawks 3rd line “deserved” top-6 minutes (and they probably did), it doesn’t follow that the Hawks should sacrifice the team’s interest to be “fair” to these players.

It’s not a coincdience that the two SCF teams were so deep this year.

If the Hawks lose Versteeg, this may be a silver lining for HIM, but, as a fan of the team, I take zero solace from this.

If Kris Versteeg kills us, he'll be wearing a lesser sweater.

But when it was suggested to him that Toews v. Kane seems likely to become a sidebar to every future international hockey tournament, he smiled and said: "I'd like us to win something together, too." -- 2/28/10, so our Captain has said, and so it was done.

Scouting Reports on Kevin Hayes

My apologies if these have been posted, didn’t have time or energy to read 800+ posts

The Hockey News:
Scouting Report: Has great size for the wing position and the ability to line up on either side of center… skates well for a big man and shoots the puck with aplomb… is willing to use his size to his advantage… lacks hockey sense… is committed to attend Boston College in 2010-11… was rated 26th among North American skaters in Central Scouting’s final rankings… is the younger brother of Toronto Maple Leafs prospect Jimmy Hayes…

Impact: The Blackhawks can afford to wait for their next wave of prospects, so adding Hayes at this time is a good move. He has size and all-around upside, but will need significant time in the college and minor-pro ranks before embarking on his NHL career. He’ll go to Boston College, one of the top NCAA programs in the country, to start off.

Sports Illustrated via Scout Central (any one know what that is?):

“Kevin is a skilled power forward who plays with enthusiasm and drive. He has very good hands and is an excellent playmaker. He’s a strong skater with a long stride, and uses his long reach and puck protection to beat defenders. An excellent wrist shot with a sneaky quick release, and will shoot from any angle. He controls the puck very well in traffic, sees the ice very well, and finds the open man. He has a very good knack of playing the puck in his skates for a big player, often moving the puck from skates to stick without losing speed.”

Hawks are asking for 1st round pick and a prospect for Versteeg!, according to Pierre LeBrun of ESPN. Offer pending to Niemi, none yet to Ladd, Hendry or Hjalmarson (the remaining restricted free agents).

One of the (few) things I don't like about following hockey

is that, unlike football/soccer, you need to be 50% lawyer to understand what’s going on half the time.

by Germware on Jun 26, 2010 9:16 AM CDT up reply actions

Eh, I don't think the bonuses are that confusing.

Now tagging (and tagging space above the cap, and the way tagging works if you’re planning on sending a guy to the minors, etc ad infinitum), on the other hand, drives me nuts.

by spokeinthebandwagon on Jun 26, 2010 9:20 AM CDT up reply actions

Why Toews' bonus

was paid for by the team & not the league is kinda confusing. But you’re right, I was talking more about tagging room & why we can’t go over the Cap during the off-season, etc. than the other stuff.

by Germware on Jun 26, 2010 9:26 AM CDT up reply actions

i believe b/c

Toews’s bonus was off an entry level contract, which is the only case in which such bonuses count towards the cap. at least that was my understanding from a couple things krome said over the last few days.

happy ninja is happy....and wants to share its new toy!

by puppetmasterp on Jun 26, 2010 9:31 AM CDT up reply actions

also I think it's an option that the management makes.

not all entry level contracts include bonuses, do they?

by ahnfire on Jun 26, 2010 9:32 AM CDT up reply actions

that sounds right

but i thought Kane and Toews had several such bonuses in theirs, i guess as a byproduct of them being up-and-coming stars as such young ages.

happy ninja is happy....and wants to share its new toy!

by puppetmasterp on Jun 26, 2010 9:34 AM CDT up reply actions

Nope, not all entry level contracts have bonuses

And some have bonuses for different things. You can write in a bonus for pretty much whatever you want (score 30 goals on the season, rack up 60 points, win the Calder, any thing you can think of), but none of the teams have to write them into the contracts. It all depends on what the player’s agent manages to negotiate. Toews happened to have a ‘win the Conn Smythe’ bonus written into his.

Now the League awards, like Keith’s, are extra-contractual. They’re not written into the contract, they’re just something nice that the League does for the players who win stuff.

by spokeinthebandwagon on Jun 26, 2010 9:38 AM CDT up reply actions

Oh, I wasn't talking about on-ice

But it’s kind of part of being a fan of hockey, having to follow the Cap, etc.
