Day 1 Thoughts
You can tell I'm off for the summer because I can't think of any clever titles any more. Anyway, to it.
-Look, I'm not Canadian. I'm not other bloggers. I don't spend my time watching junior, college, or high school hockey. I don't read any draft prospectuses (prospecti?). So past Taylor Hall (who is an unfortunate looking human being) and Tyler Seguin who I saw in the World Juniors, I can tell you exactly fuck and all about any of these guys. And I prefer it that way. Usually, past the top five it'll be a year or two at least before you see any of them. As for the Hawks pick of Kevin Hayes, it just looks like this was their guy. Though projected for the second round, Stan must've thought he wouldn't be around when the Hawks picked in that turn, so they grabbed him when they could. He already knew he was punting #30. So if this is Stan's guy, we'll see how Stan's eye is Wow, that was lyrical
-Stan's contention that the Hawks don't need to make any more trades is posturing at his best. He must assume we all can't count or add, although to be fair to him that's a pretty fair assumption. Right now, the Hawks have 13 players under contract with 6 mill of cap room, and that includes Huet. If we subtract him, that's 12 players with almost 12 million in space, leaving the Hawks to complete a roster (12-14 more players) at less than $1 million per. Uh, no. In fact, I'm sure Bowman was trying to package some of his picks and Versteeg to move up, but just couldn't pull it off.
-McClure's been beating the Patrice Bergeron drum, which would be pretty awesome. I've been wondering about Marc Savard, who would turn either Sharp or Hossa into a 40-goal guy again, depending on who he played with. But I don't think their money works, and I'm not sure the B's won't just go ahead and move either Seguin or Bergeron to a wing for the season, which both can do.
-With all these picks and some moveable parts, could a run at one Jarome Iginla be out of the question? Be still my heart. Actually, be very still,, this is a pipe dream. But it's fun to live in for a couple seconds, no?

or else Stan is planning some executions.
we don’t have enough spendable money to sign out a full roster – without somehow dropping some current guys (cough ‘Versteeg’ cough ‘Huet’ cough). it can’t be realistically be done otherwise

maybe he plans
on burying Toews and Hossa in the AHL this upcoming season? This allows us to keep Steegs and Huet in Chicago, and gives us a bit more economic flexibility with the remaining cast of goons
The one & only?
Am I the only one on this site that doesn’t think Versteeg should be traded? How come everyone is so anxious to get rid of a 20 goal man?
II Can Finally Die Happy Now!
I don't think it's a "want" to trade to Versteeg
it’s a matter of salary and lack of cap space.
I’m sure if a poll was held here, just about everyone would want Huet and his salary traded above anyone else. I’m sure there are also a few who wouldn’t trading Campbell because of the size of his contract.
Based on their performances and the money they are making, I don’t see why anybody would want Huet or Campbell
Maybe, just once, someone will call me 'Sir' without adding, 'You're making a scene."
no one's excited about getting rid of him
he’s a great player and we all know it. it’s just a pragmatic perspective. We still have cap issues, and have to get rid of someone. so of the likely candidates, there are the players who’s contracts will be really hard to move b/c they’re overpaid and no team wants to take on such a huge contract (Huet, Campbell) and the ones who are not Toews/Kane/Hossa/Keith but good enough to garner interest elsewhere.
The prime trade bait in the latter category are Sharp, Versteeg, Hjammer, Ladd, and Niemi — especially the first three. Sharp is an absolute BARGAIN or us to keep, and I think a lot of people see keeping Hjammer as integral to keeping out defense strong. So that leaves Steeger as the most likely to go — he’s the best of whoever’s left (so other teams really want him), but we have enough other forwards that can produce offense that make Steeger less important to keep.
just my take on it though.

I think Bolland is another possibility
but seeing as how we are a tad thin on true centerman, and Bolland has sooo much upside to the organ(i)zation I really dont see us moving Bolland unless we get a center back in return.

In Stanley we trust! 34,38,61, and finally 2010!!!
yea kinda figured that would be the case
I honestly think though if your stan you need to at least hear out some offers for any of your players. They may say Bolland is on the untouchables list but in reality the only players in my mind that are untouchable are toews, kane, hossa, and keith! Then you have a list of players that are on the “only if a once in a lifetime deal one sided deal comes up would I move these guys” Bolland, Seabrook, and sharp would prolly fall into this category. They are very important players to your organization but if the perfect deal fell into place you would move them.
Drink it up!

Seebs has to be untouchable
His passing and offense generally improved a lot as the season wore on, and, even in the new NHL, a big d-man can bring something to the table that the “new breed” (i.e. Keith) can’t.
And Sharp has proven time and again what a big game guy he has. The shorty in Game 2 against Vancouver was probably the biggest goal of the year, and it was all #10.
On the untouchable list, Bollad is clearly the bubble boy, but, I gotta give him the nod over Versteeg (fucking Sophie’s choice, that.)
If Kris Versteeg kills us, he'll be wearing a lesser sweater.
by cliffkoroll on Jun 26, 2010 12:17 PM CDT up reply actions
In my book, Sharpie gets the nod just because of how solid he turned out at center.
This team needs someone who has chemistry with Hossa, and right now, Sharpie is that person. Hossa is a key piece for the next decade, ergo, Sharp stays also, if only to dish the puck to our favorite Slovak Panda. His own scoring upside is certainly advantageous also.
Versteeg, love him though I do, just doesn’t have that certain chemistry with any of our key pieces, and doesn’t have quite the versatility that Sharpie does to play wing and center with equal poise. So agreed, if I’m getting rid of someone, it’s got to be Versteeg on the block before Sharp.
by spokeinthebandwagon on Jun 26, 2010 12:52 PM CDT up reply actions
I would trade Kane
if we could get a team to pull a “Toronto” with us.
Add Seabs to the 'untouchable' list.
In addition to keeping Keith happy (no small consideration, the thought of trading the only partner your Norris D-man has trusted for the last five years), Seabs brings the size and the willingness to lay on the body that we don’t really have in any other D-man.
People need to quit tossing his name around; Seabs isn’t going anywhere. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him get a contract next year that keeps him here for nearly as long as Keith. As long as those two keep playing like they share a brain, he’s in no danger of moving any time soon.
by spokeinthebandwagon on Jun 26, 2010 12:41 PM CDT up reply actions
It's more a matter of the depth chart.
I’d love to keep Versteeg, but I think Sharp’s more talented and versatile and we need Ladd’s physical presence. So Steeger, with his 3 mil contract becomes the quickest way to free up some good cap space and not do serious damage in a position that we have depth at.
If Stan could really keep them all and not make any more trades, that would be wonderful! It’s highly doubtful though.

Versteeg is also a very good two-way player, and his deficiencies are correctable.
I’d definitely keep Versteeg over Ladd, but Ladd is cheaper and, as has been noted, the Hawks are now a worryingly small team.
If/when Versteeg goes, I’m gonna puke all over my shoes, but it’s increasingly looking inevitable.

Because
Sharp has emerged as a viable center, meaning you’re paying him 3.25 million to play on your 3rd line.
Because his lack of success at the dot suggests he’s still hurt
Because he’s on the books longer than any of the other guys you might actually trade.
Because despite the narrative, the numbers show Thornton and Richards torched him in even strength chances.
and because he’s probably never going to be more valuable in a trade
by Bellwether Meltdown on Jun 26, 2010 1:05 PM CDT up reply actions
I don't know if I agree with all of that..
I think they’re still hoping that Bolly will be a 2nd line center once he’s fully recovered – I think this season is where they’ll see if Bolly really can turn into the 2nd line center they’re hoping he’ll become, otherwise, he’ll be traded mid-season or next year.
And re: the narrative argument, I could care less about the numbers if this narrative repeats.
"the numbers show..."
I’m curious as to what numbers Bell’s referring to. C&B’s? Because I believe Verstig’s numbers showed otherwise and that the narrative was indeed statistically the truth.
Lord Stanley's new address: Sweet Home Chicago!
by ChicagoNativeSon on Jun 26, 2010 5:40 PM CDT up reply actions
I looked at both C&B's and Verstigs
All I got from Verstig’s numbers was that Bolland’s line was “sufficient” against HTML, which is fine, I’m glad we had that line out there doing what they did, but that’s it, he’s an above average player, not this “amazing on both ends of the ice” guy that was played up during the last two series.
When he’s eating up 3.25 million a year for the relevant future and you’ve found out that Sharp can indeed center a line, I’d rather spend the money elsewhere.
by Bellwether Meltdown on Jun 26, 2010 7:41 PM CDT up reply actions
I definitely agree with your other points
I’ve been barking for the Hawks to trade Bolland this summer for months. I’d prefer a guy with a questionable back not being on our payroll eating up so much cap. Even after a pretty good postseason, I have my doubts that he’ll ever be the player we had hopes of him becoming.
We would need to find a deal in which we could pick up a cheaper yet solid 3rd line center though if Bolland is to be traded. I think the odds of this are low, so Versteeg or Ladd might be the one gone next.
Lord Stanley's new address: Sweet Home Chicago!
by ChicagoNativeSon on Jun 26, 2010 7:52 PM CDT up reply actions
My money is on Versteeg
I think if you have to move someone, you benefit the most from moving Versteeg. Especially with us being somewhat depleted with centers and stacked with tallented forwards. I also think that Bolland was still recovering from back surgury last year. Its really hard to strengthen your back with therapy when you are playing games every other day and on the road. That is an injury that you really need an entire offseason to get over. We shall see next season tho.
Drink it up!
In Stanley we trust! 34,38,61, and finally 2010!!!
My concerns regarding Bolland is that back problems often linger throughout one’s career.
My head says to trade Bolland
Common sense tells me it’s probably Versteeg
My gut tells me it’s Ladd
If/when one of the three gets traded, I’ll tell everyone “I told you so!”

Bolland as a number two or getting traded...
I can’t see Bolland being viewed as a number two guy. If he was then I would think the Hawks would try and keep Fraser.
In the same vein, I can only see Boland or Sharp getting traded for better true Second or third line centers. They would be upgrading the team type trades as opposed to cap relief trades.
WAIT!!!
We’re allowed to actually UPGRADE the team during this offseason??
I was not aware of this. What a concept.
I haven’t read any of the comments for the past three days until today, but by trading Fraser it looks to me like they’ve decided on Sharp as the 2nd line center. Therefore Bolland is overpaid as a 3rd liner (at least short term. Sharp will be an RFA and could be gone after next year). So yeah, like I said, the Hawks need to find a solid replacement or you can’t trade Bolland without significantly weakening the team.
Lord Stanley's new address: Sweet Home Chicago!
by ChicagoNativeSon on Jun 26, 2010 8:39 PM CDT up reply actions
Yeah, I don't think I worded it very well
But my conclusion was basically that Bolland’s line was sufficient against HTML in their own end, and ended up scoring more than expected — and that’s what made them look so dominant (and since people cast them into the “checking line” role, people just interpreted it as dominant in a shutdown sense).
Bolland is a center. We need centers more than any other position.
Do you have suggestions for a similar 2nd line quality guy who knows our system, is young enough to gel with our youthful core, and comes cheaper than Bolly will? No? Okay then.
Bolly is only getting better. Even after a devastating back surgery, he came back and was happy to excel in a role-player capacity if he could help the team. He’s not going anywhere if management can help it, unless they get a ridiculously good deal for him.

I'm fairly convinced
that the organization already has worked out or is close to working out a way to make Huet’s cap hit disappear. That’s the only way that Bowman could legitimately say the Hawks don’t need to make any other trades. They were talking on the draft last night about sending Huet to Russia and having a Russian team pay part of the salary— does anyone know what the Hawks would be on the hook for in terms of cap hit? Is it the equivalent of a buyout, or would it make the whole thing disappear as if he were sent to the minors?
But if all or most of Huet’s salary disappears, this team can fit under the cap while keeping Hammer, Niemi and Ladd.
this may be completely delusional
but I like this:
That’s the only way that Bowman could legitimately say the Hawks don’t need to make any other trades.

You can only use the Bonus room for actual bonuses. It can’t be used for normal salaries. Does anyone know if any player still has a bonus in their contract? Not sure if anyone is still on their original contracts…
Also unless he gets traded you need around 1.4/1.5 for Huet. At least for most of the scenarios that you described.

Mirtle’s a great hockey guy, and I trust his articles on complicated matters more than I do most others.

I don't see how
They afford all three of Ladd/Hjammer/Niemi
Even if all of Towes bonus went on last year’s cap and Hendry only gets an extra 100K you’re still looking at less than 3.5 per for Hjammer and Niemi. Niemi’ll get in for that but I’d be shocked if someone doesn’t try to break the bank on Hjalmarsson
Reasoner looks like he might be ticketed for Rockford.
This also makes that 1.2 million on Kopecky look like quite the albatross.

Now I don’t really know what Ladd/Niemi/Hjammer/Hendry are worth on the open market, so I pulled numbers out of my ass.
So that’d leave the team with 282K and that assumes a best case scenario in which none of Towes money counts on this cap and you can somehow make Huet’s entire cap hit evaporate.

Pretty close numberwise what I would like to see
I think we end up getting hammer at around 2.5m cap hit and niemi somewhere around 2.7m. but I could see niemi getting close to where you are. I would estimate hammer at less because I think they will lock him down to a 5-6 year deal and using that to help get his cap hit down as well! We shall see but that is cutting it a tad close with the money thats why I think they still have one more move left in them. They seem to be about 2-3 mil away from realistically getting it done.

My guess is that the team would like to deal Verbeauty right about now, but I’ve got to imagine they’ve got a contingency plan. Otherwise they would have unloaded him at a discount on draft night.

I actually think Niemi will sign for far lower, 2.0 to 2.2 kind of thing, possibly lower still, in the 1.5 to 1.9 range. He’s a rookie Cup winner, ya, but he’s never been a number one through a regular season, and his limited experience in that respect will drop his contract value, imo.
Hjammer is an interesting case too. I think I said earlier, the Hawks will want to reward him for a job well done, but they’ll also be looking at comparables in terms of numbers, and his offensive stats and +/- will be used there, along with the fact that he is a 4th d-man. I can see him also at 2.0-2.5. Dunno. May be wishful thinking.
www.mjt.org
The compensation is what makes the situation not as dire as people seem to believe
Sure, sign our guys for big numbers. We’ll take the draft picks. It might weaken us in the short term, but we’ll still have a very competitive team – and watch out in 2-5 years when these draft picks start working their way onto the team.
You might not be able to win consecutive Cups very easily in the salary cap era, but you sure can set yourself up to make a run at in the near future if you don’t make shortsighted decisions. I really can’t say enough about how well the Hawks management has handled the situation, going back to the Toews, Kane and Keith signings.
When I say I don’t have an ounce of worry regarding the Capocalypse, I’m dead serious. I’m actually very excited, almost like I was a few years ago when Toews and Kane started their careers. I feel like I’m watching this team get reborn all over again – and we have a Stanley Cup under our belt this time. Life is good!

The only thing we’d have to worry about is an offer sheet, and whether or not we can match it. Strictly based on comparables we’d be able to sign him at something under 2.0, imo. His market value is very high, I think, in terms of willingness to pay him dollars … but whether or not teams will want to sacrifice the picks and the inevitable salary, that’s a different story.
www.mjt.org
The Hawks will not sign Niemi for over $3.0M
If a team offers him that, I see the Hawks parting ways and taking the 1st and 3rd round compensation picks for him, from the signing team, same with Hammer and Ladd. I would be surprised to see Niemi offered over $1.9M by another team, Hammer slight Chance up to $2.9, but doubt over $1.9M by another team, Ladd surely not over $1.9M. This is based off of the compensation picks the Hawks would get in return.

for a goalie with 50 games under his belt behind a defense that’s probably a lot better than your defense?
or a top-4 defenseman that’s kinda below the radar?
I could see teams giving up 2nd round picks for these guys, but I’d be surprised if anyone offers Nemo or Chalmers $2.5, even less for Ladd.
Mebbe throw in the “this is a fucking awesome team” discount and sew these guys up for $6 million.
If Kris Versteeg kills us, he'll be wearing a lesser sweater.
Agreed. I see Nemo and Hjammer going for the $2-2.5M range.
Certainly not three. They’ll need a few more successful years to earn that much. Both of them are very young for their respective positions, and haven’t played that often in the NHL. I’d be happy with the Hawks offering 2.2-ish each. And I think that they’d accept on those terms; they both want to be a part of this team, and they both know how quickly this roster is going to be in Cup contention again.

Rationally, I agree with this
but somehow I would not be the least bit surprised to see someone bite big on Super Nintendo or Niemi. A lot of talk is about teams adopting the “Blackhawk” model; two years ago the Blackhawk model was to offer irrationally large salaries to free agents. How much real success had Huet had when we threw that salary at him?
The picks might be prohibitive, but there’s got to be someone else out there that thinks one of these guys is worth 3 and a second.
I’m backpedaling a little bit from my earlier thoughts. Maybe Steeg or Ladd needs to go in order for the rest of the team to fit into the clown car.

I've been running my numbers games figuring $2 million for each of those 3
I may be off on one (or all) but I think $6 million for the 3 is a reasonable working figure
Preparing my psyche for the coming Capocalypse
Confusion will be my epitaph.
The Issue with these numbers I see is
The Hawks are carrying about $3.6M in Performance bonuses (Kane and Toews) on the 2010-11 Payroll. You only address $220,000. This difference lowers you Cap space by ~$3.4M to $2.1M, with Niemi, Ladd, and Hammer at 2009-10 Pay Rates. Those three alone should easily combine to $4-5M in pay raises from 2009-10. You may be able to cover 1 with this Cap Space, but would be deafly close to Cap limit before the season, very much limiting call if needed, especially if a lower paid player gets injured. $3-5M needs to still get shed, which Versteeg just happens to fall into (not an untouchable).

I didn't address
anything in those numbers. It was just meant to look at what money we had available to give in raises and bonuses. What are the other bonuses owed to Kane? For some reason, I thought that olympic bonuses were covered this year, but then again, I guess that’s not necessarily information that’s publicly known.
by StillLostinNC on Jun 27, 2010 5:51 PM CDT up reply actions
Kane and Toews
Combined for over $4.25 Million in Performance bonuses last year. With the Hawks only being about $600,000 from the Cap this past season, the rest of the bonuses are counted against this years Cap. So even though the Cap is $59.4M, the Hawks only have $56.1M to work with, about $300,000 less than last season (Buy out from Curtis Brown was about $400,000 from the $56.8M Cap). The Hawks can go up to a combined $65.34M during the offseason on payroll (Cap +10%), but have to be below the combined $59.4M by Game 1. I do not believe prospective Bonuses (Skille and Beach) are taken into account during the Offseason, but are at the beginning of the season until considered “unlikely to occur” at which time the team can use that Cap Space. This $65.43M Cap is huge in play right now, since at no time can the Hawks Payroll and 2009-10 bonus carry over go over this limit, which includes tendering Qualifying Offers to RFA’s (they are immediately considered in Cap Calculations). Violations of this will result in severe fines to the Hawks of Millions of Dollars and probable Draft loses.

So is this why
we can’t tender an offer to Hendry right now? I think that gives us a big clue as to the state of the numbers right now.
What makes it worse
Unless the Hawks move Huet, his $5.5M counts until Game 1, even if he is sent to Rockford. So really the Hawks are playing with $50.6M on 20 players, and even with the 10% + Cap, when you account for bonuses and Huet, the Hawks have only $56.24M for 20 roster spots.

Bonuses
Again the amount the Hawks used the bonus cushion is purely speculative.
Capgeek and such sights could literally be 2M off in their estimates.
I’m still thinking you take 1.5M off the top of the cap to cover Huet and build a 20 man roster with the rest.
How do the 'scratched' guys work in determining an NHL roster?
Is there a set level of guys that count against your cap during the season, or is it just that you have to watch that you don’t call up an expensive Rockford guy if someone with a cheaper cap hit is out for the night?
by The Deputy Mayor of Rush Street on Jun 27, 2010 9:46 PM CDT up reply actions
20 - 23 active roster
During the season the active roster (20 – 23 players) is used to calculate the cap hit. So the active roster includes up to 3 guys “scratched” for the night. You figure out what their salary is for the year and then take a days worth and add it to the accumulated cap.
What matters for a Rockford callup is over the next years summer. Two way players count their NHL salary prorated per games played. So they count for tagging room over the summer.
Got it, thanks.
So while I’m sure they wouldn’t go with just 20 or 21 for the new season, at worst they should be able to wait for the opening game, when the Huet gambit would open up the cap breathing room to round out the roster.
But we really should be thinking in terms of leaving an extra $1.5m for those last three men in the skybox.
by The Deputy Mayor of Rush Street on Jun 27, 2010 11:02 PM CDT up reply actions
You also need to factor in
A call up to replace a guy on IT/LTIR (Hossa, Burrish) do not count against the Cap if they are making less then the injured player.
All this considered, everytime I work it out the Hawks are sitting at about $60-60.5M combined (Salary and bonuses) for 2009-10, about $3.2-3.7M over the Cap limit. The reason it is over and not a penalty is the bonuses, which a team can go over by a certain amount only off of bonuses. Since all this does not fit under the 2009-10 Cap, the rest carries to 2010-11.
Also buying out Huet I think would be a mistake. It saves a little to be able to wiggle for the summer, but it costs 4 years of a Cap hit. It is better for the Hawks to sweat it out this summer, and keep the room in the future, considering the large long term contracts all ready in play through that term (Hossa, Keith, Campbell, Toews, Kane).

Just to make sure we are on the same page...
… 1.5M is NOT a buyout. It is Huet’s cap hit for the year for being on the payroll during the summer.
tendering
My understanding is that the Hawks could tender him but don’t want to give him a raise. They don’t think anyone else will try to sign him and I think they are correct.
You can tender at the minimum
Only if you can stay under cap. If the player were the accept, is the reason why just tendering counts against. But yes, you can tender for the minimum to retain rights, and then negotiate.

I am no cap genius....
but doesn’t Huet’s cap hit disappear if they send him to Rockford and just leave him there?
It would at least be gone for the regular season
but I’ve read that he can’t be sent to the minors until the beginning of next season, which would mean his cap hit would still create headaches for offseason signings. I have no idea what degree of truth there is to that.

360 degrees of truth.
He’s on the roster, along with his cap, until 12 days before the season starts. At that point they can put him on waivers and keep him in Rockford for the year; and his cap hit stays there with him unless and until we bring him up.

one clarification...
If Huet clears waivers he still counts against the cap until the day before the season. There is NO distinction between a minor league and major league one way (SPC) contract until the day before the season starts.
It's either Steeger or Sharpie.
No one wants to make these moves. They have to. Huet has to go at $5MM/ year. Not even debatable. Does anyone know if his numbers count if they were to move him within the NHL and paid some of his ticket? How about to Montreal (where he had some success and they now need a back up) and the Hawks paying 3 out of the 5 owed? Does that work or do you have to then count the 3 contribution against the cap? If it counts, his only option is out of the NHL and eat it with no cap considerations.
The “Tallon/ Postal Fiasco” Foursome (Barker, Buff, Steeger, and Bolland) are all guys that went on the list that you need to pick from at $3MM/ year. Add Sharpie, Hjammer, and Niemi as the other menu items. Of those options, it really is a choice between Sharpie, Steeger, and Bolland. You take your best deal of the three. I would rather move Steeger cause he has significantly more mental mistakes (turnovers), is less versatile than Sharp (who as a “A” is also a key locker room guy), and has less upside than Bolland. The Rat eats up the other teams top lines (remember how good Bolland, Havlat, and Ladd played in 08/09 where they were our best line all year). He also had more Junior A goals than people think.
Let’s not panic. Our D is set with Hjammer signed. Let Boyton stay with Hendrey. Need Niemi and Crawford battling. And our new lines could look like:#1) 19,88, and 22. #2) 10, 81, and 82. #3) Bolland, Ladd and Bickell or Skille, and #4) Reasoner, Bickell or Skille, and Beach. And this doesn’t even take into account of all of the experienced talent that may want to sign a 1 year deal to take a final shot at a cup. Net, we’re fine if we move Steeger and Huet.
i’d try to put one of the rookies (skille or beach) on the second line with Hoss and Sharp.
overall, our lines are still really good. Other teams have gotten better (mainly st. Louis and L.A.), but we should still be in the top 4-5 teams in the conference and be ready to make another run at the Cup.
NHL doesn't allow sending cash in a deal
nor can a team partially pay a contract as part of a trade.
about the only way to totally clear him now is retirement (or death) – and the partially clear is buyout ($1.875 cap hit for 4 years).

$1.875 mil a year x 4 is probably better than any cash deal anyway...
Is that the actual numbers for a Huet buyout? The numbers I heard were much worse.
Like they would have to spread over more than 4 years…
"What doesn't kill us makes us stronger."
You can only spread over twice the length of the remaining contract.
And you only save 3.5 million to buy out the contract and it is a bigger cap hit for twice as long to do it. I’m still thinking loaning Huet to the other continent is what is going to happen. You only need 1.75 per year from somebody to make it even. Then that cuts the cap hit and to only two years.
With apologies to Huet, I sure hope they can pull this off.
"What doesn't kill us makes us stronger."
Patricia Bergeron? Iggy? and beating the "Versteeg will be gone" drum.
C’mon now McClure that would be a horrific waste of cap space to acquire a guy with a bad history of concussions and various injuries, not to mention he’s well known to disappear when the games matter most ie., the playoffs and the Olympics (yah, he was there … I know hard to forget with his Ryan Parent ice-time). I think our cap space left, as little as it is, could be spent in a better way. He’d be better in Pittsburgh alongside his boyfriend Sidney Crosby.
Iginla is going nowhere – ever. He’ll remain a Calgary Flame and continually lose to the Blackhawks all 4 times he faces them again this year. So sad, but true.
Versteeg may be gone today. That won’t bother me as this saga has gone on for too long now to the point I don’t really care anymore. Will a team trade a kid they just drafted less than 24 hours ago to acquire Versteeg? Who knows at this point but chances are good that it could.

I'm curious as to when they'll start having trouble convincing players they drafted to come over.
As the KHL gets better, the obscene money there will start looking better and better. I’m wondering if the Caps’ Russian strategy won’t backfire on them in the next few years when it comes to convincing draft picks to actually come to the States.

Gearing up for Round 4
and aw, they listed Hjammer as one of the Round 4 picks who ended up being notable in the NHL.
Also, if the Hawks are going to take a goalie, expect them to take him in the next few rounds. Common wisdom (and statistical evidence, and experience) says that you shouldn’t pick goalies in the first two rounds, but round 4 seems like a likely time for clubs to start picking their netminders.
by spokeinthebandwagon on Jun 26, 2010 1:24 PM CDT reply actions
Yup
We already got a goalie. I was hoping we’d pick up Pickard but I could tell as soon as he was nabbed that the management would grab a goalie in the next pick, and they did. I think they wanted Pickard but didn’t think he’d get picked when he was.
Yeah, Simpson's a goalie.
We drafted him at the bottom of round two, which I thought was a questionable decision on the club’s part, but oh well. He was ranked top three among North American goalies, so I guess the Hawks didn’t want to take a chance that he’d get snapped up before the third round. Given our lack of depth at the position, I still wouldn’t be surprised to see us take another G before this thing is over.

I actually doubt there’s a great deal of contact between the player (and his agent, naturally) and Hawks management. They’re bound by the CBA to offer him 110%, of course, but even though they’d want to avoid arbitration it’s purely numbers right now, especially in our tight situation. They’d look at comparables, I’d think, and try to get him at around that number for 5 years or so.

Hammer needs to stay. Edzo considers him the third best d-man and I agree.

Nickle for your thoughts
Anybody think that maybe we should have taken a chance on Kirill Kabanov? He was ranked as high as the top 5 on many draft boards, but then had some problems that were supposedly caused by his parents and slipped to the 3rd.
II Can Finally Die Happy Now!
Nope. This team has chemistry.
No need to screw that up with a kid who’s know to be a bit of a prima dona, and a problem in the dressing room. When your major juniors team and the Russian national team no longer want you and your agent laughs in your face before hitting the door on the way out, no way do we want to take that chance either.

Kabanov
Yeah I was thinking about that also, but I had seen a draft special about Kabanov the other day, and I gotta tell you the kid has got some serious offensive skills, but also some serious problems with his pops and keeping an agent, and tattoos for some reason go figure ( and I’m talking an obscene amount of tats like full body) but I digress, he just caught my eye and I was curious as to how far he would fall from where he was at the start of the season.

While I agree they havent been playing very many good teams
The Braves were one of the hottest teams in baseball and were on an 6 game win streak when we swept them. I think that they will continue to win series and will now be hanging around the top of the division the rest of the year. Say what you want about the teams they have played lately. yeah, England was down 2-1 (still are)
but about a minute after the first England goal, Lampard (English midfielder) nailed one off the inside of the crossbar that bounced down over the goal line. German goal keeper picked it up quickly and the ref called no goal, even though it was about 2 feet over the line.

I should have made it clearer
that England walk off after the deficit became 3-1. That ended up being a swing of two goals. If the goal for England would have counted, I doubt they would have been playing so aggressively.

Puck Daddy lists Hawks as one of the handful of "winners" in the draft...
Chicago Blackhawks
The Dustin Byfuglien trade with the Atlanta Thrashers was a productive salary dump. Then, in the Draft, the Stanley Cup champions had 10 selections including five in the first two rounds, which is outstanding. LW Ludvig Rensfeldt, taken at No. 35, was the fifth-ranked European skater via Central Scouting. ’Hawks fans should be happier than Patrick Kane(notes) in Vegas with the last week for Stan Bowman.

there's a betting line on this
a couple weeks ago, Cleveland was the overwhelming favorite, but Chicago was the overwheling #2, and that was before Heinrich.
Also, something about this being a “basketball” decision from the LeBron camp today. New York’s been flogging its “we’re the most amazing city on the world” shtick, but the guy’s already worldwide outta Cleveland, so this “basketball” comment seems like a snub of the “glam” suitors..

more rumors!
Ladd got a QO for 1.65million (via Darren Dreger’s twitter)
apparently the Hawks want to resign Hendry without giving him a QO…how does that work? Let him becoming a UFA then sign him again? (via Jesse Roger’s blog)
…I feel like such a rumormonger. When does the trading/signing period end? I like to know when I can stop wondering about these things.
rest assured
when this ends, there’ll be the next thing: how to round out the roster.
Convention, mebbe some drunken stupidity flap over the summer, and next thing you know, it’s pre-sesaon.

Hendry's minimum QO would be higher than the minimum to Hammer
and who else is going to sign Hendry?
Preparing my psyche for the coming Capocalypse
Confusion will be my epitaph.
Mrs. Hendry does
Actually, I do feel like he could still develop into a fine puck-moving defenseman… I would love to have him back.
he’s just not necessary though. I think he plays way too small for his size.
While I’m not sure what D-men will be available for next to nothing, there’s gotta be a guy that’s comparable to Hendry for the same price. Especially if it means they’ll have the opportunity to play for a contender.
I don't feel that the Hawks have anyone who is as good and/or ready in the system
so it’ll be Hendry for at least a year, unless as you suggest they make a trade or sign a FA.

For laughs I sometimes read the comments after Trib stories on hockey
like the one today reporting Ladd’s QO:
dale tallon had great drafts for the last 4 or 5 years and picked up good free agents.but signing huet for over 5 million was stupid and brian cambell for 7 million per was insane. so they need to get rid of cambell and huet and or hossa.instead of getting rid of all these roll players.and bring up more of those stud rookies, and hope that niemi gets better and more consistent.
It’s shit like that that makes this place so awesomely awesome.
Our Cup.
Seriously
Personally I found Sharks fans’ fear of Dale Tallon amusing:
I love Vokoun, but I fear DW will get raped in a trade with Tallon.
you left out a bit
… I’d trade Campbell in a heartbeat if I could…
. . . replace him with someone just as good for $3Mil/year less.
Which you can’t. There are only a very few with his puck movement skills and they are unlikely to be available, and at that would only save you maybe $1-$2Mil. Campbell’s overpaid, yes, but nearly impossible to replace at this point for any significant cap savings.
Our Cup.
"replace him with someone just as good for $3Mil/year less"
No, I’d trade him for a guy “worth” a 3M/year contract. I’d take the lesser but more cost effective player on my second D-pair. When you are starting to talk about half your team needing to be entry level players to fit under the cap, I’d trade Campbell in a heartbeat if I could…
I agree
I love Campbell as a player. He’s one of my favorite Hawks. Unfortunately with the current situation, I’d trade Campbell for the ability to sign 2 or 3 veteran players – but I will add, only if there is solid 2nd line d-man available.
Maybe someone like Mike Green. (See what I did there?)

Is this picture for sale there? I really like it! I’m thinking of getting it unless I can get a better quality one somewhere else. (And don’t y’all buy them all up before I can!)

repost: OT fanpost question
put this up in the last main thread, but…how do you insert text boxes in a fanpost?
happy ninja is happy....and wants to share its new toy!
Do you mean like this?
I am a quote box!
To do that, I use the blockquote tag. It works like this:
< blockquote> I am a quote box! < /blockquote>
Take out the spaces inside the brackets, and poof, boxes.

Oh, Sopel
I love you but for your contract. Sopel at the Pride Parade, from Puck Daddy. I love this quote from Wysh:
If we had a Hot Tub Time Machine, we’d travel back to opening night in Oct. 2009, show Sopel this video and count the seconds until his brain exploded …
