Navigating The Windward Passage - More Game 3 Afermath

Jonathan Toews motors through the neutral zone upon hearing there was free Yuengling in Michael Leighton's crease.

Thanks to GMH for the pinch-hit recap. Hopefully we won't have to press her into duty too often as it's unfair to her, and plus she just made the three of us look REALLY bad. Taking nothing away from anything she wrote this morning (all of which I completely agree with), I have a few more points of discussion as we count the seconds until a critical game 4 tomorrow night (and for the 785th time, we'll be at the Bottom Lounge - bring your Stadium Pal).

  • Regarding Brent Sopel's minutes, particularly in the third, it's become glaringly apparent that Catfish is Q's safety blanket. While I understand he's defensively responsible and a shot blocking machine, watching Sopel under duress from the Flyers forecheck handling the puck this entire series has looked like a 17 year old trying to fingerbang with oven mitts on, goal notwithstanding. It was a tie game for all of 20 seconds of the third, and taking a defensive posture isn't going to do anyone any good in the playoffs. Furthermore, this was at the expense of Campbell's playing time, who was having a terrific game to that point transitioning the puck, and his CORSI numbers bear that out, being the only + defenseman not named Keith or Seabrook, and was far from a defensive liability - not to mention the effect his limited playing time has had on Hammer when he's partnered with Sopel. The way to make that type of forecheck pay is to make it miss and transition quickly the other way while its caught deep - now which of those two blueliners have doing so when the team's in need of a goal? Think about it. But I highly doubt Q stops grabbing for his binky any time soon.
  • As was pointed out during the broadcast, Patrick Kane started breaking the puck into the Philly zone on his left and proper wing with greater frequency when Pronger was out there against he, Toews, and Buff. While it does limit some of the black magic he can wield relative to coming down his off wing with the puck toward the center of the ice when on his forehand, I much prefer his chances against Matt Carle than Chris Pronger if he can get isolation one on one with only marginally fewer options given Kane's high skill level and offensive IQ.
  • Speaking of Philadelphia Dick Cheese, while he certainly hasn't left Buff alone as I (stupidly) predicted, to me it still hasn't been the epic battle the media has made it out to be. That being said, Pronger has rendered Buff mostly ineffective, and has gotten a few "star calls" from their battles in front, one of which (barely) ended up behind Niemi last night.

As I'm sure has been suggested in the comments, it's time to get Buff off that line, and force Laviolette to decide where Pronger is going to be needed, preferably for Troy Brouwer, who seems to have regained his stride after an understandably tough start to the playoffs. Assuming Lavvy keeps matching up Pronger against Daydream Nation, Brouwer is far more mobile than Byfuglien, and will make him skate more in the defensive zone rather than just engage in crease battles, which could have postive effects in the third period, as Pronger has already shown signs of wearing down as the game goes on from logging such heavy minutes. In the unlikely scenario that Laviolette would have Pronger follow Byfuglien to whatever line he lands on, that would presumably leave Braydon Coburn and Kimmo Timonen, who are already getting their balls gnawed off by Marian Hossa, out there against Kane and Toews. YES PLEASE.

Either way, it seems that getting Buff off that line gives Quenneville more options and puts the onus back on Laviolette. And yes, for the record, a writer of this blog is advocating jumbling the lines.
  • In keeping with the theme of the Hawks forwards against the Flyers defensemen, continue the monitor the gap between their blueliners as the Hawks forwards enter the offensive zone. As long as the Flyers continue to concede their blue line and not deny entry, my outlook on this series will remain positive.
  • At the other end of things, Hawk forwards need to have better discretion in when they choose to help their defensemen at the hash marks and below, as they are leaving alleys for Flyer defensemen to shoot at will. Three of the Flyers' four goals last night originated from point shots - those defensemen need to be fronted better and forced to dump the puck back down low, particularly during the penalty kill.
  • The power play is once again fucking clown shoes. How a team this offensively talented can't figure out how to consistently work a two-man isolation play between the half wall and the goal line I'll never understand.
  • If Andrew Ladd can go tomorrow, Burwood needs to sit.
  • And if the Hawks are going to be that matchy-uppy tomorrow, tighten up the fucking changes, boys.

"grabbing for his binky"

that’s going into my personal lexicon whenever Sopel is out on the ice at some totally inappropriate moment. Thanks, McClure.

I think it was Hack who first advocated switching up Buff and Brouwer, and I totally agree with him and you both. They play similar enough roles (crash-bang guy who goes in front of the net), while still exhibiting the slight differences in their game (Brouwer’s speed, Buff’s snarl) that might make such a change successful.

One of the reasons why we won all those games on the road against Vancouver and San Jose was because of tight line changes, so it’s not like they’re not capable of executing better judgement on the fly, they just need to … get back on their horse, or whatever. I’m out of metaphors for the week.

by gmh on Jun 3, 2010 7:34 PM CDT reply actions

the bad line changes

make me cry. maybe b/c it’s such a basic thing, and doesn’t have anything to do with Philly’s skill in play — well, except for the part where they effectively take advantage of bad line changes. But we open the door for them there, not that they punch the door open. So many other things that Philly does well, we don’t need to help them further by making simple mistakes.

by puppetmasterp on Jun 3, 2010 7:39 PM CDT up reply actions

didnt the equalizer and game winner come from bad line changes?

oh, and McCreary is an amazing asshole, and I would think the same if I was wearing orange, how does that guy still have a job?

Also can the Hawks please stop pretending that they are the Flyers, it would be appreciated. Im all for physicality, but why lay a hard check and take yourself out of a play, they didnt do that against Vancouver. just please go back to Blackhawk hockey, please…or Ill shoot this dog, im totally serious this time

I didn't come up with the Buff for Brouwer swap

but I think it is a good idea and DDN with TBrouw was my favorite line all year. What I’m not a fan of, yet, is wholesale changes….such as moving ladd (if healthy) up to one of the top two lines and Buff down to one of the bottom two. If we head back to chicago 2-2, then maybe we think about some bigger changes, but as winners of 7 of the last 8, I think a subtle Buff for Brouwer swap could work out.

Brouwer & Buff

I posted the regular season stats, but in case anyone was wondering about the playoffs (I don’t have the TOI data yet, so take these with a bag of salt):

m+/- Toews Kane Sharp Hossa

Byfuglien -2 -3 -3 -2

Brouwer -1 -3 +5 +5

mCorsi Toews Kane Sharp Hossa

Byfuglien +45 +57 +20 +22

Brouwer -4 -5 +14 +7

by VerStig on Jun 3, 2010 8:11 PM CDT reply actions

also

QoC might have some effect on Corsi numbers. Buff likely had softer matchups than Brouwer for most of the season.

by gmh on Jun 3, 2010 8:16 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah, probably

And the effect is ridiculous on checking lines (either that or Bolland is our worst player with a 82 for the playoffs). Fun fact - Niemi (approx. the whole team) is a +1 for the playoffs in Corsi.

Of course, I’ve already stated my reasons for losing faith in Corsi altogether…

by BigCSouthside on Jun 3, 2010 8:39 PM CDT up reply actions

What are these numbers?

Is this 5on5 only or including Power Play and Power Kill?

Brouwer really hasn’t played with Toews and Kane since the beginning of the playoffs. You have the whole getting over his family problems thing going on there.

Buf’s positive 5on5 numbers were primarily from the Sharks series. Not sure when he has even played with Sharp or Hossa, though.

by DaleHalas on Jun 4, 2010 8:26 AM CDT up reply actions

Like I said -- bag of salt

I know that that these are affected by Brouwer’s issues and Buff on D for a little bit. That’s why we didn’t do this matchup before.

As for the numbers; +/- is defined to be based on even-strength but includes shorthanded goals, while Corsi is even-strength only.

by puppetmasterp on Jun 4, 2010 1:10 PM CDT up reply actions

depends
Each party would name a trusted representative (a second) who would, between them, determine a suitable “field of honour.” It was also the duty of each party’s second to check that the weapons were equal and that the duel was fair. In the 16th and early 17th centuries, it was normal practice for the seconds as well as the principals to fight each other. Later the seconds’ role became more specific, to make sure the rules were followed and to try to achieve reconciliation, but as late as 1777 the Irish code still allowed the seconds an option to exchange shots.

Teams are drafted each session, so mostly guys rotate and no team is “dynasty”. Rough play is immediate removal and if it’s twice you are done. Changes are a reoccurring theme in the playoffs.

After winning 10 out of 11 it’s hard to start pointing fingers and start reinventing the wheel. Afterall, nothing really looks out of sorts other than Sopel seems to have Q thinking he’s the second coming of Brad Park – which he’s not. Campbell needs to play more as I’m sure Scotty “Hello, I’m here to make an appearance” Bowman has already told Q and thus it will happen Friday.

The Brouwer and Byfuglien switch looks inevitable. Let’s see how that pans out.

Last night CBC interviewed Dale Tallon, who was at the game, and it appeared to me that although he was ecstatic about the ’Hawks chances of winning the Cup a part of him, and justifiably so, still seems bitter about what and how everything went down this summer. Great guy. Wonder if Dale and Scotty shared a few words last night?

Well, watching Q's interview today, he doesn't seem too worried.

And that worries me. Honestly, we’ve been getting dominated pretty hard out there for a huge chunk of most games and being up 2-1 shouldn’t make anybody, fans or players, happy. We drop Friday’s game and that 2-0 lead after 2 is insignificant.

It seems like Q won’t be moving Buff or anyone for that matter. The only possible change I can see him making is tossing Ladd back in the line-up if he’s ready to go. Q even said Buff has been playing well which I completely disagree with. He really hasn’t done much all series and has probably hurt us more than anything, with the stupid penalties in game 3. Just because he’s been good against Vancouver and San Jose doesn’t mean he should be kept on the top line expecting to produce at the same level.

by Ban on Jun 3, 2010 8:19 PM CDT reply actions

He has been our best player all series and I would like to see him steal the spotlight from that big dickhead #20.

Make that pea-brain spastic child of a coach over on the other bench actually fucking coach a bit and get Buff off the top pair. Brouwer all night tonight and we will begin to see the pronger that chases his tail and gets abused like he did against the Hawks during the regular season last year.

Mmmmhm. That about sums up my feelings on Sopel. Love him, but for God’s sake, move that puck.

Buff does need to leave that top line. He’s not the only one who’s put up numbers with Daydream Nation, we all know that. And like you said – make Philly decide who Pronger skates against – Buff with Shooter and Marian, or Daydream Nation. Either way, it’s a win for the other line.

So...

I didn’t read the comments. Just a quick blurb before I go to bed…

Is anyone else still in the mindset that the hawks (shouldn’t) lose the series? Last night, in my opinion, the majority of the team played like ass. Niemi was a bit off, Sharpie was god awful. The entire defense had their thumbs up their butts with the puck, buff was back to being useless, etc etc. Yet… if coach Q didn’t fucking murder them in OT, the hawks may have stolen this game. If the hawks can play that badly, yet minus a coaching issue, come that close to winning… I can’t see how they could possibly lose this series unless something happens.

We’re the better team on paper and we should win, but anything can happen even in a best of 7 and anything can change the outcome of a game. One stupid penalty, one giveaway, one takeaway, one BS call by the refs.

Have we found the last bastion of competency in our major sports media converage?

Who IS this guy?? Nice article, and thanks for the link. I especially like this part -

Yes, it’s all the rage to point out that the Flyers "are back in it" ad nauseam. Well, sure, in that they’re not down 3-0, the Flyers are back in it.
This, along with the rest of the article, is especially refreshing to read from a major sports news analyst/journalist/whatever from a network one wouldn’t assume would have the most level headed objectivity in its reporting.
Truth be told, I was hesitant to even turn on NHL on The Fly today for fear of exposure to hot garbage being spewed through my screen regarding The Flyers being “back in it against all odds”, and how The Cup Finals have essentially become The Chirs Pronger Show since Chris Pronger is the end-all-be-all to superstar hockey athletics even tho he STILL is a dirty prick and that not one of these “experts” or even the officiating for that matter has the balls to call him out on it (I mean he fucking STOMPED ON A GUY with his SKATE for Christ’s sake!). Well, as it was my fears were confirmed & it resulted in all three talking heads at the table picking PHI to win tomorrow. Ugh …
I know it’s ridiculous to put any stock into the predictions of “experts” paid to say things more extreme & gripping than moderate & objective (Really NBC? Q changed his D pairings around in Game 2 because Dan Carcillo was in the lineup?? Um, have you been huffing paint again, Pierre? Be honest), and as frustrating as it is to not have our Hawks get the much deserved press that they should (ie the linked article above) regarding their success that has gotten them to where they are (UP 2-1 and only losing their FIRST GAME IN 8 PLAYED!), if I were in that locker room, I’d say “Fuck it, dude. Lets go bowling”.
This Blackhawks team knows how to win in practically any situation because of how they play their game. So I say unto you Men of Four Feathers, go out and play your game and let the national media write you off. What else do you have to loose? Let us all breathe a sigh of sanity as we remember that the pressure is STILL on Philly or this series becomes less open than every Philly leaning “expert” wants to harp on about, and thats no matter how much shit Chris Pronger wants to do or say to distract everybody from that fact.
PS – Sorry for the length everybody, but I had to get it out PLUS the link VerStig has up is really worth reading (no offense gmh, your recap was tip-top, but I expect that here).

I don’t understand why NBC devoted their Game 2 coverage to him. I can’t imagine Quenneville thinks of him other than for a good laugh.

Maybe Laviolette is playing him so that he’s a distraction. Some people in the press think that Pronger’s post-game treasure hunts were a distraction. If so, then Carcillo must be more of one because what he does is even more silly.

Pierre was the one I heard going on and on and on about Q trying to protect 72 from carcillo. i thought it was hilarious. “Protect” 72 and throw that guy with his collarbone attached by a piece of string out there against him…. makes perfect sense

"The Chirs Pronger Show"

It’s sometimes nice to get an outside perspective of a game and series but most of those shows on NHL network and VS are horrible. All they are are paid mouths and it’s their job to stir the pot or in fact say nothing of value at all and just babble about things that aren’t actually happening. Also, the last people I want to hear about are Pronger and Carcillo, Pronger still plays decent hockey but is still a thug and Carcillo is just Carcillo, nothing much there but a journeyman minor leaguer who gets paid to be in the NHL because he’s a madman and can stir things up now and then.

CSN's had him for at least this season.

He did some writing for NHL.com last year; I remember this because he wrote an article that so incensed me I was forced to create an NHL.com username and password so I could tell him what a fucking awful article I thought he’d written. I believe it was on Huet.

He’s very much a homer for his favorite players in my mind. He has some interesting color stories but I’m not a huge fan. And he totally stole gmh’s entire recap and all of the ideas floating here.

Brouwer on the Top Line

I’d like to see this change and agree that Buff is out of his element against Pronger. Buff is a decent player and he worked magic in the VC and Sharks series but has not faired so well against the Flyers so far. Moving him down could force changes from the Flyers and possibly allow Buff to work his magic on a different line and also open up the Toews line to providing their own magic.

If Ladd can go get him out there. I want to see Soupy with more playing time as well.

by CaptDirk on Jun 4, 2010 5:40 AM CDT reply actions

Hope Nobody Is Hitting Panic Button

1. Wringing hands over bad line changes and Soupy vs. Sopel ice time is all well and good (and probably justified), but the big difference in this series has been the failure of the top line (Kane’s goal notwithstanding) not only to produce, but to play well defensively and give the Hawks the puck possession that feeds their style of game. Patience is a virtue here. Let’s not panic just because we’re not going to sweep.

2. Line shuffling this late in the process presents a host of uncertainties that might be better left in the “what if” column, although I certainly agree that if Ladd is available it probably merits some juggling on 2-4 lines and I’ve seen enough of Burish this series, thank you very much.

3. Let’s remember that by staying within themselves and playing their own style when it counted most, the Hawks were able to eke out an OT winner against Nashville when the series was tied 2/2, thanks in large part to a nice shot on goal by . . . Sopel (on which Hossa gathered up the rebound)

4. IMHO Hawks have made a mistake by trying to match Flyers’ physical game. Finishing checks is nice, but I do think some of our guys are taking themselves out of plays for the sake of finishing checks when they shouldn’t be.

Have at it/me.

Didn't I have a helmet when I came in here?

Not worried

I fully expect a top effort by the Hawks tonight. They’ve had 2 nights to fester about the loss,Pronger’s dickyness and the Buffalo Wild Wings refs.
My 3 wishes for tonight
1. Get 51 phantom and Ham sandwich back out there as the 2nd pairing.
2. Put Hoss on Toews line some.(the monster need to be on the ice).
3. Heal Ladd,Heel Burrish.

Is anybody sharing my concern

about the Hawks not having their “A” game for the past three games? It’s easy to say, yeah, they’re up 2-1 and they haven’t played their best. But when ARE they going to play their best? I am getting a little wary that the Hawks haven’t had their best because Philly has found a way to neutralize the Hawks best.

Not wanting to sound the alarm, but I must admit this is something that concerns me. On the other hand, if it’s true, then the Hawks don’t deserve it – Philly would have earned it.

"...about six feet from the moose's butt."

by The Fearless Freep on Jun 4, 2010 9:06 AM CDT reply actions

I'm not worried

Just because we haven’t brought the “A” game, doesn’t mean we are not capable. They have to play the full 60 starting tonight. If we see a repeat of the 3rd periods then there might be concern. I still trust Q to make the right moves and make sure the team is composed and ready to play. Lets just get excited, enjoy the ride because “this will not be easy….”.

Put together a solid game tonight, work hard, better passes, clear the zone and maybe we all will be in a better mode hungover on Sat

I find it interesting

how different people are interpreting what has gone on so far in this series. There seem to be two groups of people, those encouraged by the fact that the Hawks are up 2-1 having not yet played up to their potential and those that are discouraged by this same fact.

I understand your concern, but don’t share it. I think that the Hawks are too good to be held down. We figured out how to handle Nashville (who seemed to play the most similar style to Philly) and I think we will figure out how to consistently handle the pressure that Philly’s applies too.

by gwood on Jun 4, 2010 9:14 AM CDT up reply actions

What worries me

Niemi has been very solid and spectacular at times and my worry is if the Hawks don’t bring their A game and Niemi has just a so-so performance then the Hawks could be in trouble.

I’m thrilled they’re up 2-1 at this point not having played their best. But I also fear they may rely to heavily on Nemo to stymie the Flyers when it should be up to the guys skating around doing that instead. I’d love to see one of those dominating performances we all were seeing earlier in the season, holding the opposition to 20/25 shots while the Hawks pepper Leighton with 35/40.

Tonight is certainly a pivotal game, for both teams, and if the Hawks come away with a victory I’d imagine they would be coming out for the kill on Sunday.

by CaptDirk on Jun 4, 2010 9:38 AM CDT up reply actions

Let me fix that for you
I’d love to see one of those dominating performances we all were seeing earlier in the season, holding the opposition to 20/25 0/1 shots goals while the Hawks pepper perforate Leighton with 35/40 5/50.

by VerStig on Jun 4, 2010 9:41 AM CDT up reply actions

Okay

That would be fine by me, I’d prefer the goals more so than the shots but regardless I’d like to see one of those hold the other team to 20 shots or less games, and we score 5 or 6 and win by that margin.

by CaptDirk on Jun 4, 2010 10:27 AM CDT up reply actions

I'm not worryd

1. After three games, 2-1 Hawks sounds about right.

2. I gotta wonder how many of the last 800 comments would have been written had the Hawks won the other night.

3. In particular, “CLEAR THE FUCKIN’ PUCK!” is equivalent to “dump it out, allow Philly to regroup and attack again.” Not an unusual strategy, but not what the Hawks have done all year (kinda the opposite of puck posession.) No one seemed too pleased with this strategy in the 3rd period of Game 2.

4. Very physical Wednesday. About halfway thru, I thought: “Andrew Ladd would be nice.”

5. Deep offenses put pressure on 3rd d-pairings. The Hawks have done this to teams all year (Philly seriously shortening d-bench in response.) The Hawks are gettin’ a bit of their own medicine here. Fuckin’ pricktease Johnsson!

6. The Hawks should shoot more. Their game has changed subtly lately- they used to never get outshot. Stop waiting for the perfect play- shoot and crash the net. It’s fuckin’ Leighton!

7. The only 2-goal lead in the series was during the 2-1 game, and it didn’t last long. Some great hockey- both teams showing amazing resiliency.

8. Q- too matchy-uppy.

9. Shaping up to be a great series. All I ask is that the Hawks continue to bring a great effort.

Gentlemen! I have invented...this thing!

I would have written the same things I wrote Cliff

Small changes should be made but nothing drastic.

If Versteeg hits the net, and/or Toews and/or Kane hit the net and we don’t make two bad changes, Hawks are up 3-0. Yeah sound familiar? Like The Flyers trying to convince themselves that they should have won game 1 and 2?

Carter missed an open net and so did Richards.

If scoring goals was easy everyone would do it.

Play the same game with some minor personnel shuffles, wait for the stretch pass to be there (don’t force it), and shoot the puck while someone drive the net (not standing their in front) it’s all good

by laaarmer on Jun 4, 2010 9:19 AM CDT up reply actions

Point #6 - Hawks should shoot more

Agreed, with one addition. The “crash the net, get traffic in front of Leighton” is the right move in some circumstances, but more important based on what I have seen is that that Leighton has now shown that he is very vulnerable on shots from the point or from between the circles. I’d like to see more shots from that area, and more focus on clearing shooting lanes from that area.

Didn't I have a helmet when I came in here?

Power Play

My iPod broke so I’m sitting here trying to drown voices out and my head is about to asplode… but has anyone noticed that everyone (outside of here) is singing the praises of the Flyers PK after limiting us to 0-for-6? Yes, I know that they have a good PK, but first off, for something that you don’t expect to be much higher than 20% in the first place, how is 0/6 such a big deal? Even if you leave out any observations (like our horrible setup, way too much passing, etc.), just one PP goal would’ve made that a perfectly normal stat.

Also, I’m inches away from ripping on the idiot Philly fans (thankfully there are very few of them, but daggummit are they LOUD) who keep insulting our “entitled,” “clueless” etc. fanbase.

the ironic thing about accusing a fanbase of being entitled

is saying “they’re idiots for thinking they can sweep” and then following it up with “Flyers in 6” which, um. Means 4 wins in a row. Which is what a sweep also is. Which begs the question— where do you draw the line between entitled and confident? Is it entitled as soon as you enter the Illinois state borders and merely confident when you enter Pennsylvania’s? C’mon.

To be clear, I have no problem with a fan if he thinks his team is winning the next four games

What I find weird is how that fan considers his behavior acceptable (either because he has faith in his team, he’s confident, whatever) but is quick to label that same behavior/belief as entitlement when he encounters it with fans of other teams.

It’s a little pot-meet-kettle-ish.
