The Steeg Is Gone....The Steeg Has Gone Away

Shit, he gave us so much material too.

Anyway, tonight, Kris Versteeg was the latest (and perhaps last) cap casualty from our Stanley Cup Champions.  He was traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs (man, they love them so overpaid wingers, don't they?) along with Bill Sweatt (cue McClure tears) for Viktor Stalberg, Phillip Paradis, and Chris DiDomenco.

The latter two are prospects, and DIdomenico actually has some upside.  Problem is, that upside is coming off snapping his femur like a twin the QMJHL, so we'll see how he bounces back from that.  Paradis is apparently not going to be much, but then the Hawks didn't think Sweatt was going to be much either.  So there.

The prize is obviously Stalberg, and the kid does have some promise.  He's a big boy, and the Hawks could use some size.  He scored 9 goals in 40 games with T.O., and that's a team that has zero creative people to get him the puck.  One could conceivable see him pot 20 this year, considering.

Most of the time, the team that wins the deal is the team that got the best player.  Both the major trades the Hawks have made this year, they would lose on that criterion.  However, that wasn't the point of these trades.  The point was -- once the Huet situation is resolved -- is the Hawks will have close to $14 mildo of room.  That's with 12 players on the pro roster, as well as Beach and Dowell who could be on the big club.  Skille and Bickell will probably need to be resigned, but all those hits will come in under $1 million one would have to assume.

I would guess the Hawks just add from here.

Because Versteeg, while infuriating at times, seemed to give a crap for more games. Although I love Buff, he really played maybe 20 games at his highest level the whole time he was here. Steeger almost always tried, perhaps too hard at times.

I'd be

Surprised to see either one of those things happen. Kane-like numbers on the leafs would seriously be an amazing sort of event.

by aeroplane on Jul 1, 2010 2:45 AM CDT up reply actions

Here's the conflict I'm feeling right now

On the one hand, you have to feel like the capocalypse is now over and that we have (or will have) the core of Kane/Toews/Hossa/Sharp/Keith/Seabrook/Campbell/Hjalmarsson for the foreseeable future. As a fan who remembers the wilderness years, that’s very comforting to me.

On the other hand, it’s tough to see Verbeauty go, because I can now say with a pretty high degree of confidence that I will never, ever again love a hockey team as much as I loved this year’s crew. At least they went out winners.

by StillLostinNC on Jun 30, 2010 10:33 PM CDT reply actions

we'll always have the 2010 Hawks

it’s now up to them to make us love the 2011 (and beyond) Hawks.

Really, it’s a win-win for you!

by ahnfire on Jun 30, 2010 10:35 PM CDT up reply actions

Don't get me wrong

I still plan on being the biggest hockey fan in the state next year and I’m still going to watch 80+ Hawks games, living and dying with each one. It’s just a strange, early nostalgic feeling to already have the sense that this will be “the team” for me.

Not to draw fire from the Chicago crowd, but I felt/feel the same way about the 2002 Cardinals… and they can’t say they went out winners.

by StillLostinNC on Jun 30, 2010 10:45 PM CDT up reply actions

I consider it an opportunity to spread the love.

I still love my Hawks, and I’m all prepared to love the new guys. But now I have fondness for the Leafs and the Thrashers that I didn’t before. And honestly, I think VerStud/VerStupid will have more chance to shine in Toronto. I think his talents got lost in among all of the high quality players on the HAwks roster.

This brings up a good point

Stan did very well to make sure that all the boys went to the East, therefore not allowing them to bite us in the ass multiple times during the year. I wish them nothing but the best, and I can’t wait to see the first Atlanta-Philly matchup to see how Buff handles Pronger in the regular season.

by whiskeyboy on Jul 1, 2010 12:54 AM CDT up reply actions

Can you imagine if VerBeauty had ended up in Vancouver? Nashville? San Jose?

even though i don’t think SJ would have been likely. And where could he have gone that would hurt us less? Florida, or the islanders (b/c i really don’t expect them to do…well, anything). In toronto, he’ll be cherished (i hope), and he’ll like that. without biting us in the ass.

happy ninja is happy....and wants to share its new toy!

by puppetmasterp on Jul 1, 2010 12:58 AM CDT up reply actions

Steeg in SJ would be fantastic

He and Pavelski would cancel each other out and POOF there goes a couple of top scorers.

by rsncrntz on Jul 1, 2010 8:29 AM CDT up reply actions

How Buff handles Pronger in the regular season

As much as I love Buff, I think it goes something like this:

Buff skates to the corner, and waits for the puck to come to him.

During his post-game interview Pronger says: “Byfuglien plays for Atlanta? I didn’t see him out there tonight. Are you sure? Does anyone want to ask about the gap in my teeth? You know that I took a bunch of pucks in the Stanley Cup Finals last year, right? Did you happen to see that picture of me in a tutu in the Chicago newspaper last year? That was a lot of fun posing for that. It got me in touch with my feminine side. This year, I am going to win the Lady Byng. What do you think of that, presshounds?”

It'd be nice

And I want to stress, what I’m saying has absolutely nothing to do with hockey. I fully believe we might see a better Hawks team at some point in the near future. But if the front office is smart, it will be built around good hockey players, not personalities like Burrish, Versteeg and Buff. Plus, Kane is only going to get more mature. I really think that, while the future is bright, we hit our pinnacle of fun this year. I hope I’m proven wrong.

Exactly!

No way is it all down hill from here. Buff was great in the playoffs but did next to nothing in the regular season (17-17-34), and while Steeg is going to be a 20+ goal scorer for years to come we still have others that can do that (as was pointed out to me). Plus it frees up the cash needed for Hammmer and Niemi. The only thing I’m wondering about is what happens if Ladd wants more than we are willing to pay, and somebody else signs him? Sure we get compensated, but that big body will be gone along with Steeger.

by StillLostinNC on Jul 1, 2010 8:42 AM CDT up reply actions

that had the added bonus

of coming back from being down 3-0 to the hated Yankees. The only way that would be similar for the Hawks is if they were down 2 goals halfway thru the 3rd of game 4 in the WCF being down 3-0 in the series and coming back.

Therefore I think that was a bad analogy you threw out.

but Leddy WILL be something.
he wasn’t 3rd overall (and really, barks shouldn’t have been) but 16th overall, he’s got way above average skating, isn’t big, but plays big, physical and moves the puck .

by cliffkoroll on Jun 30, 2010 11:26 PM CDT up reply actions

My experience with GMs is

If he doesn’t get fleeced, it’s good. Far too many times I’ve seen awful moves (many by Chicago GMs).

You still haven’t provided an alternative…

by VerStig on Jun 30, 2010 11:27 PM CDT up reply actions

Perhaps my expectations were unrealistic

but your experience with bad GMing causes you to set the bar too low (if your GM is always getting fleeced, doesnt it occur to you that there is someone on the other side of the deal?)

If a goofball on a website could easily spell out the alternative, wtf do we pay a GM for?

If my full-time job was dicking around on CapGeek, I reckon I coulda figured something out. I refuse to believe this was inevitable.

My main point is: if anyone is thinking: “Thank God for Stan Bowman. I don’t know how he pulled this off.” then, well, I don’t think "thinking is the right verb here.

by cliffkoroll on Jun 30, 2010 11:39 PM CDT up reply actions

All I'm saying is

It’s too early to start criticizing a GM for making two very average deals. Sometimes those are the ones that have to get done.

Every deal can’t be a blockbuster. You can’t “win” every single deal by a large margin. I think the consensus is that both of these benefits both teams. How can you complain about that?

by VerStig on Jun 30, 2010 11:41 PM CDT up reply actions

Do you suppose it looked like an average deal when we got Sharp?

I know nobody flipped when we got Ladd

Actually, as I understood it, that deal was similar

I think the Flyers had to dump salary then, too. From what I read a few weeks ago it seemed like Philly fans didn’t like the move but understood it had to be made.

I know it’s easy to say now, but I can honestly say that I was happier than a pig in shit when the Hawks traded for Sharp in 2005, having just watched him the summer previous play for the Phantoms against the Wolves in the Calder Cup finals, which is where the man-crush began.

well, I think there's some merit to his not getting fleeced

they may be boring, predictable deals, but considering everyone knew our situation, shouldn’t he get some credit that he’s even been able to negotiate a deal that aren’t completely one-sided against us?

I'll agree to that

I heard he was dangling VerStud out there before the draft and no one bit. They all had to know the situation, and I think any deals he makes now are what will really be important.

Besides, I like the guys we traded and hope that they can excell at their new homes, which won’t hurt us at all.

Well, the Canucks apparently wanted him

by chiblackhawks on Jul 1, 2010 9:24 AM CDT up reply actions

Ther've been quite a few times when a Chicago GM has fleeced the other side

most recent example: Jim Hendry dumping gameboard and getting Silva. Same contracts, but Silva is 8-2 or 8-3 with a sub-3.00 ERA while Gameboard…well, he’s flicking off Seattle fans now.

by northernsails on Jul 1, 2010 3:00 PM CDT up reply actions

Not necessarily

considering that every GM out there knew that the Hawks had to get rid of some players. The special talent was NOT getting fleeced. It appears that Stan was successful in not getting fleeced while also succeeding in making sure that the players we traded will not come back to repeatedly bite us in the ass.

"zero genius points"

Let’s see, he cleared the salary cap issue by trading two players that could NOT consistently play in the top six for this team. Furthermore, he traded players that were the least compatible with Kane and Hossa.

Also doesn’t Stalberg and Skille with Bolland become a pretty fast checking line?

And that lets Ladd move up with Toews? Even with Kane, you aren’t afraid to match them against the other teams top lines. And if Hossa plays with Toews and Ladd you now have a really dangerous two way top line.

by DaleHalas on Jun 30, 2010 11:17 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah, I don't see that many better alternatives

He could’ve held out for a better deal but I don’t think it would’ve been forthcoming. It’s easy to criticize, but unless you have a less scary scenario I find it hard to digest (my love for Steeger aside).

by VerStig on Jun 30, 2010 11:18 PM CDT up reply actions

by Esquire02 on Jun 30, 2010 11:20 PM CDT up reply actions

I did prefer to see Ladd go too

I feel like people have switched to overvaluing him now (not that he isn’t good — he is, and young too) and team balance/size issues aside, I thought Steeger’s talent was harder to replace.

But I think the numbers panned out this way and some of Kris’s attitude won’t be fixable (the highlight-reel-seeking part). So, I can live with this.

by VerStig on Jun 30, 2010 11:22 PM CDT up reply actions

my thoughts were this

Steeger is a potential top 6 (really wouldn’t it be 4 cause he plays wing? I digress) while Ladd is perfect for the 3rd “shut down line.” To me it was more about filling roles

I don't see how you can have too much scoring

the Hawks had zero extended offensive droughts this past season. next year will be different.

also, by this logic, nintendo’s equally expendable.

It seems like there is a basic misunderstanding in this debate

Would it be great to keep Versteeg? Yes

Can the Hawks realistically keep him? No

Therefore, what had to be done was done. Of course, keeping him would be ideal but someone making $3 mill+ on his second contract cannot be kept for a team with cap headaches like the Hawks.

this has actually been cathartic for me

my head has been in the know for probably the past day or two, but my heart is still catching up.

I just wish Bowman hadn’t hinted that somehow the Hawks were done dealing after Buff (don’t have the exact quote, but the gist, I recall, was pretty tantalizing.)

Apparently, as I’ve been told, Stan was playing some deep, strategic game, the fruit of which is…umm… I forget.

why do you say this?

I don’t think that’s so far-fetched.

Yeah, if he were a real genius

he would have found a way to sign $80 million worth of players while avoiding the detection of NHL authorities. In fact, he has! Just watch, next year Versteeg is going to be out on the ice wearing a Bickell jersey. Unfortunately, the jig will be up when Stan tries to send out big Buff in a Hendry sweater.

As opposed to Sharp?

by alpo on Jun 30, 2010 10:45 PM CDT up reply actions

On a player level basis

I considered Sharp, Steeger, and Ladd about the same value for their money, in terms of how well I could live with them leaving. Sharp would’ve been a little higher if he was the same age as the others.

But helping us keep Hjammer is huge. (hjuge?)

I know its not popular

but I would rather have sen Ladd go

Maybe not enough space freed up?

If he accepts his QO (as opposed to matching something higher or going to arbitration), we’ll be in very good shape.

by VerStig on Jun 30, 2010 10:49 PM CDT up reply actions

Nah

I’m much happier keeping Ladd and losing Versteeg. With one we got brilliant moments of VerStud! and many offsetting moments of VerStupid! Ladd is rock solid and always plays his part. It’s not always flashy, but he gets the job done.

Verstig was expendable as we already have many skill players

who could dance and score. Ladd fulfills a deficiency of size that we had even when we had Buff. Compared to Philly, San Jose, Vancouver we were a smaller team. Getting rid of Ladd would’ve really handcuffed us. Beach is still an unproven kid.

by alpo on Jun 30, 2010 10:51 PM CDT up reply actions

Unless we could keep Steeger long term

I don’t see how we could’ve kept him. I would’ve loved to have been able to develop him, but we didn’t have room, and as he got better (if he did, which I think he will), he would’ve become more and more expensive.

He would’ve been real helpful about five years from now. But hey, who knows. Anything can happen by then.

I got a bad feeling

his goon side is going to come out more playing for toronto

I think it's more his

“Look, a highlight reel move!” self that will come when the Hawks come to town.

If I'm there,

you better believe I"m cheering for them. Always. Hell, I still cheer for Marty.

i'm on record as pro-Versteeg

but I don’t get cheering for guys in the wrong sweater.

booing ’em, of course, is truly stupid.

I know the name on the front

is supposed to be more important than the one on the back, and I generally agree with that. But I get attached to the players. And these guys (except Marty) brought the Cup to Chicago. They deserve recognition for that, imo.

by Katherine215 on Jun 30, 2010 11:11 PM CDT up reply actions

JHC helped bring recognition

that the Cup was on it’s way. so he gets points for that.

by ahnfire on Jun 30, 2010 11:11 PM CDT up reply actions

my thoughts exactly.

he helped make some of this year’s guys (especially Kane) into who they are now which helped them win the Cup.

by Katherine215 on Jun 30, 2010 11:14 PM CDT up reply actions

i have zero issues

with wanting to see good guys and good players do well. as long as they don’t beat my team head to head.
