The Fire In Our Throats Will Beckon The Thaw: Hawks at Flyers Game 4 Preview/Pregame Thread/Group Therapy

Chicago Blackhawks at Philadelphia Flyers, Jun 4, 2010 7:00 PM CDT

Images_medium vs. Images_medium

GAMETIME: 7pm Central
TV/RADIO: VS., CBC, WGN 720 (Zambrano blowing up will be on WIND)

McClure says you lot are jumping off the walls in the threads today, so we'll get this up a little earlier than usual.  Obviously, the big one is tonight.  As you've seen elsewhere, 24 of the previous 27 Stanley Cup champs have won Game 4.  There is a large difference between coming home 3-1 with the man in the black hood warming up his shoulders and coming back 2-2 with the Flyers having all the momentum.  I know which I'd prefer.

First things first, on the Hawks side Andrew "Mountain" Ladd is a gametime decision (aren't we all?).  He didn't skate with any particular line during the morning skate, but don't read too much into that.  I expect Ladd to be in the lineup, and back on Bolland's and Versteeg's wing.  If I have to guess, I'd imagine Burish sits and Kopecky moves to the 4th line, but I don't want to put myself on a ledge when it comes to guessing what Coach Q is going to do.  For the Flyers, CarBomb is sitting, big shock I know.  Are you surprised that in a game where the refs may be tightening things up that the biggest doofus on either team is in the pressbox?

We've been speculating on what Q might do to unlock Toews and Byfuglien.  I get the feeling there's a shuffle in our future.  Perhaps Brouwer's greater mobility would be an asset on the top line, making Pronger move far more than he has with Buff.  Maybe you reunite the Hammer of Thor line with Hossa, Toews, and Sharp, and thus make Laviolette decide which of Toews and Kane he wants to let roam free in a Pronger-less ice.  Or maybe you just leave it as it is, and decide that you're the better team, and it doesn't matter.

What I'd like to see, and know I won't, is less adherence to all the matchy-uppy Q tendencies.  Make your lineup changes however you want, but then ice the team and make the Flyers adjust to you.  Honestly, what line match against the Flyers is so scary?  Who of Briere, Richards, and Giroux can Toews not handle (the answer so far is Briere, but that won't last).  Sharp?  Bolland?  Whatever.  We're going to go do our thing, you try and stop it.  Another thing that has to happen is Brian Campbell's icetime must be greater than Brent Sopel's.  51 Phantom was having a great game in Game 3 in the first two, and then had to watch Sopes stumble and crawl around the ice, which is bringing down Hammer as GMH mentioned.  If Campbell gets past the first forechecker, he will exploit the oodles of space behind it.

I know some of you are jittery.  Don't be.  We'd have taken 2-1 in the Cup Final in October.  We have the better team.  We haven't played our best in this series yet, and the Flyers have.  They still needed at OT to scratch out a win.  It's coming tonight.  Tonight we see that effort and determination that no team has ever been able to live with.

Cheesesteaks approaching...

Oh, and you know where we'll be tonight, so come join us.  Bottom Lounge, 1375 W. Lake.  Do it.

But when it was suggested to him that Toews v. Kane seems likely to become a sidebar to every future international hockey tournament, he smiled and said: "I'd like us to win something together, too."

Yeah,

I’m getting really tired of the match up crap. Against Vancouver and San Jose there were 2 lines clearly better than all the others. Here, it seems like their top 3 lines are relatively equal, so how about letting them react to us for a change?

I am very good at being jittery – it always kept me focused on making sure every possible detail went my way.

Unfortunately, there is now no detail under my control – that leads to pacing, and drinking, and sudden verbal outbursts that make the dog go hide behind the sofa for long stretches of the evening.

Sharp scored in double OT to lead Philly Phantoms to a 2-1 win over Chicago Wolves in Calder Cup Finals. Phantoms got a 2-game series lead for it.

But when it was suggested to him that Toews v. Kane seems likely to become a sidebar to every future international hockey tournament, he smiled and said: "I'd like us to win something together, too."

Playing their best? Flyers have 10 goals and their top line was involved in one

That doesn’t mean Richards et al. will start playing their best, though. Maybe Chicago has done a good job shutting them down.
Leighton has also been somewhat regular-season this series. Which also may be where he really lives.

It’s easy to manipulate the what ifs so that either team is up 3-0.

My favorite is that if you swap the goalies the Flyers are playing for the Cup tonight, IMSEO. Of course it’s absurd to isolate one thing. And even more absurd because you can’t swap the goalies. But still it’s nice to think that your team is outplaying the other.

You can argue that it has to switch the other way. Based on what, other than a fan’s faith/denial? Regression to the mean doesn’t have to happen in a set with only five to seven instances. And maybe Philly matches up against Chicago better than we all thought.

Chicago’s the better team because they’re leading 2-1. Everything else is an attempt to soothe our anxious selves with statistics, meaning and narrative while we endure the interminable wait for puck drop.

Speaking of which, it appears that I will be in attendance this evening. I’ve been charmed enough by most of you that I will endeavor to shelter and protect any nearby Hawks-adorned fans foolish enough to display their allegiance. Unless it’s a Kane jersey, in which case I pile on.

HELL NO

It’s bad enough to be subjected to Ed Snider’s Soviet-era propaganda tool of having Kate Smith sing while she is lying in state. One of the reasons they must win this year is to hopefully take “That 70s Show” out of syndication.

The Flyers’ lawless, renegade image is one their greatest appeals, so to have 20K groupthinkers wearing the same shirt is confusing and creeps me out.

Those discussions of “The Trilogy” and its prequels on recent Saturday nights were truly epic, kinda like Dat Horsa Guy – only nowhere near as cool, simply based on the fact that the discusions were nerd orgies, and He’s Marian Hossa and we aren’t.

I prefer dull

as long as I can run my finger nail on the edge and scrape some nail off, then I am good to go…otherwise I need them sharp on clean ice

by Jrs23 on Jun 4, 2010 3:50 PM CDT up reply actions

but thats when i was a goalie

being a skater, I would say sharp now so I can transistion easier

by Jrs23 on Jun 4, 2010 3:51 PM CDT up reply actions

I think what my mind is wondering

is if sharp skates would carve out channels in the softer ice and duller (more rounded edge) would compress the ice instead?

i agree

Usually the harder the ice you NEED sharper skates…but if the ice is “softer” then the need for extra sharp skates isn’t as necessary…but you dont’ get an advantage from having duller skates

Killer instinct, R.I.P. 'em

Gotta think like that cuz forever I be needin ’em;
Plan flawless, mistakes never repeatin ’em

Well it’s time to lay the hammer of the gods down and take that insurmountable 3-1 series lead. You {the Flyers} might have pulled a fast one on Boston and comeback to win that series, but you will fail here. Flyers fans may live ’til their 100 and never see that again.

The key to success is simple: Our best player {Jonathan Toews} must be our best player. He must be dominant, not just noticeable, and angry to the core willing to rip their hearts out just for a taste – Kano style.

Oh, what it would be like to score first and have a 2-0 lead after 1 period of play? Imagine is all I can do for that hasn’t happened yet this postseason. In fact the ‘Hawks have trailed at some point in all but 8 of the 19 playoff games to date, and only 6 of them has seen them lead from start to finish with 3 of those 6 coming with the ’Hawks opening the scoring in the 2nd period. Yah, I know I’m asking for too much but I’m a greedy son-of-a-bitch.

Puck Daddy some funny quotes from Burish on Niemi

Burish even tries annoy his own teammates, which we all probably know already. The article talks about how cool and calm Niemi is. Here’s the link

And to those that can’t stomach going on PD, here’s Burish’s quotes:

“In practice, I’ll score one on him, and I’ll taunt him a little bit. I figure next time down he’s going to say something about it, and he doesn’t say anything back. He just kind of looks at me, shakes his head, and goes back and stops another one. I try to mess with him, and you can’t,”

“It’s really dull. I hate it. I can’t stand it. I want him to yell back. It ticks me off. I wanna have some confrontation, and he doesn’t give me any. He just stands there with a crooked smile and gets ready for the next shot.”

Lemme tell you how it's goin down, it's on now

My gut feeling tells me that DLR may be warming up in the bullpen as Leighton gives me those Luongo ‘meltdown @ any moment’ vibes. Know who else does? The whole fuckin’ Flyers squad. Every playoff series that the Flyers have been involved in since the lockout has seen at least one game of a Flyers meltdown and that means resorting to “fight if all else fails” technique that has failed them since 1975. Buffalo, Washington, Montreal and Pittsburgh twice can attest to this. Fuck, they even lost their composure in Game 2 against the Devils, who make dead people look like party animals. So it should suprise nobody if it were to happen tonight.

Just my long thoughts but they’ve done well so far this postseason. May they not fail me this late into the postseason.

Sorry bro but Go Lakers!

I hate Rasheed Wallace for 4 main reasons:

1) he’s a total douchebag.
2) he helped the Pistons to a Championship and I hate everything from Detroit.
3) he’s a Flyers fan and wears his Dave Shultz jersey to show his support. FML.
4) he’s a total douchebag.

Bettman is such an ass

Pronger antics

How is his crosschecking not beyond the line?

It's Bettman

To prove to myself that our fans aren’t being homeristic about this, I went around looking at comment sections of articles about it — and sure enough, fans of practically every other team agree that he’s getting away with stuff.

but the government might want to look into the amazing cloaking properties of Flyers defender Chris Pronger. Apparently everything from his shoulders down is invisible to the prying eyes of officials.

I didn't expect Bettman to say anything against the refs

I did the same thing you did and yest most had comments even during the game like “how is that not a penalty”. This is just cementing my hatred of Pronger even more. I could give a shit less about the puck stealing. I don’t really think that was really bothering any of the Hawks. The media blew that one out of proportion. I’m just sick of reading about how wonderful Pronger is for the media.

Yeah that's all I'm annoyed at

I mean sure, I’m annoyed at what’s happening on the ice but I don’t want to complain about it. I feel like our guys have to be able to deal with it and win regardless. Plus, we all know our Rat gets away with some stuff too.

What I complain about is how he gets put on a pedestal because of it (and echoing that earlier comment — do you really want your kids growing up playing hockey to see dirty play as something to be praised and lauded?)

As much as I DO love DDN, I think breaking them up for some shifts might be a good idea.

Make Laviolette adjust to OUR lines. We’ve got equal or better depth, and making them decide WHO to put Puckhogger on is to our benefit.

Do you want him trying to tie up the McNuggets, or attempting to slow down Crazy 88, or interfering with the Captain – I bet the CPT would draw some calls.

I hope we see it – make that big fucker skate – for REAL. There’s no way he hangs with our boys from end to end.
