Back To Base: Flyers @ Blackhawks Game 5 Preview, Pre-Game Thread, Distillery Tour
Philadelphia Flyers at Chicago Blackhawks, Jun 6, 2010 7:00 PM CDT

So how many times since Friday night have you said or heard something along the lines of "It's not a series until the home team loses"? Quite a few I'd imagine, I know I have. But maybe like me, you're just sick of it at this point. Now we're here at a best of 3 series with the Hawks obviously still holding the home ice advantage that has been oh so crucial in this series.
Word out of the morning skate was Ladd was resting his shoulder but that he will play tonight after having a decent game Friday (from the little bit of the game I saw anyway). The lines also didn't seem to change with Buff still staying up on the top line with Daydream Nation. Jessie Rogers thinks that's all mind games though. Sam made the call for Q to jumble things up and I can't say I disagree. We know Q has no problem changing things up but the real question will be what moves he'll make. Does he simply drop Byfuglien off the top line or does he split up Toews and Kane? The Hawks need someway to get around Pronger and either of those scenarios could work. Buff is obviously losing the battle that everyone was hyping before the series and it's dragging Toews and Kane down with him (or Pronger could just be dominating them too). One way or the other, Q will be trying to get them away from that gap-toothed behemoth. We likely won't see what Q's got up his sleeves until game time.
At home Q is going to get the match-ups he wants which will help since the Flyers were able to take advantage of the quick changes the Hawks made. There's no need to go into how important the game is going to be, it's the season and it's likely the series. Toews and the rest of the Hawks have been saying the right things to the press, now it's time for them to get out there and show it on the ice.
Lets Go Hawks

A couple of links
First off, the benefits of splitting up the top line – and what Pronger has been doing to cause this situation – from the guys at the Fifth Feather here.
Secondly, I saw this comic this morning, and was reminded instantly of this series and the fans of both teams.
My main problem with it
is that “Sinfest” kind of sounds like a porn site. Makes recommending it to friends a bit more difficult.
This is the game...
we put it all together. I just feel it. LET’S GO HAWKS!!!!

I just hope that Hjammer isn't in the dog house after last game
He just whiffed on a couple of clears. It’s not like he was caught out of position or played badly otherwise. Even if we get Antti in Uncle Nemo mode, we need slightly better play by the D for him to work his magic (he can’t cover both sides of the net at once!).
I think Jelly would have to have a few shit the bed games
before his ass was benched
How would you like a job where, every time you make a mistake, a big red light goes on and 18,000 people boo?
To be honest, he didn't do much wrong last game
The Giroux goal was the defense’s fault, and another (Leino’s?) hit Versteeg and kind of looped over him. Not much he could do on either one, even if he had played like he did in Game 1 against the Sharks. I think the defense needs to step it up more than Niemi.
well there was his pass to Carle
Jelly had some killer mistakes, he acknowledged it, and I pray that it will never happen again, at least for 3 more games.
I agree...
Nemo played pretty damn good for large portions of the game. The only goal I believe he or any goalie would want back was Richards’ PP backhander…but those are gonna happen to all goalies at some point.
Hammer will be fine as well IMO. Where Philly has been having success is in the area of what I like to call "loose play" ( a term I stole from a friend of mine) where they have a play set up and then the puck gets bounced around a bit and the play breaks up but they still find a way to bang it in the net. The Hawks have to make the Flyers, as coach Q stated in his presser…"make plays" to score goals.
Leighton played what I think was his best game in game 4, but his body of work up to this point in his career does not indicate he can continue playing at that level. If we generate some loose play of our own, (and I firmly believe we will) this should be the complete 60 minute effort we all have been waiting for.
The less a man makes declarative statements, the less apt he is to look foolish in retrospect.
Here you go!

Since it was asked for
Allot of talk has been made of potential Line Changes for Q. I’m calling we go back to what we used for Game 4 of the Nashville series (well what I proposed).
But as we know Q had not made up his mind, so he reverted to plan “B” used in Game 5 vs NSH

Here are the lines pulled out of Niemi’s butt!
Line 1: Sopel-Skille-Ladd (The Oh Fuck Line)
Line 2: Hammer-Huet-Bickel (The -24 line)
Line 3: Seabs-Eager-Sharp (You got the be fucking kidding me line)
Line 4: Johnsson-Madden-Fraser (The Sure let another in line)
D1 : Kane-Niemi
D2: Versteeg-Crawford
D3: Buff-Eager
G1: Kopecky (Guaranteed no low shots will get through!)
G2: Brouwer

Game 4 vs. Van would be terrific
or last year’s game 6 vs. Van. Or even the 6-5 game versus Calgary. That would break their spirits (or it would if Pronger had a soul).
I’ll take a Game One vs. Edmonton circa 1992. That would break them worse than anything else.

Because we have Marian Hossa, and they don't.
Everyone dies. It is the only true and lasting justice in life.
Yeah, it's been a ride ... I guess I had to go to that place to get to this one.
Well, nobody in their right mind can predict what may happen tonight and after Friday night – it’s over for me. I’ll go on a limb and say that we’ll win Game 7, but that’s not tonight is it?
We can compare it other series we’ve been in before like Calgary, Vancouver, and Nashville but it really doesn’t feel the same. The stakes are that much higher with the games meaningful with the victories that much more rewarding and the defeats that much more harder to swallow. We’ve seen our share of the latter, but tonight may it be the former.
I hate to sound like I have some ‘sense of entitlement’ but has any franchise been through what we’ve been through? Have they had to endure a boss that simply didn’t give a fuck about us or the team that was, supposed to, represent us? From President Trophy winners to first round casualties to swept finalists to years of obscurity to prominance like we’ve never seen – we’ve seen it all haven’t we? A win tonight and the emotions going into Wednesday will be at an all-time high.
So let it be done ‘Hawks. You’ve been ‘the team to beat’ all season long and now it’s time to validate it with 2 wins in 3 games. It’s time to believe and to achieve and now is not the time to get roadblocked by a single defenceman or an undeserving judgement call. In the words of Al Davis – Just Win Baby.
Your tune for tonight’s Stanley Cup Finals Game 5 is Enimem’s – Not Afraid. Have to say that this track is pretty deep, so enjoy it and the moments that are about to unfold tonight; may they be positive.

yeah, screw classiness
I’ve come to realize that every homer fan has a “sense of entitlement.” I don’t mind having one now, either.
might I add
I’m sick and tired of this “For first time, Blackhawks try to deal with adversity” storyline on BSH. This is NOT the first time. And THEY WILL DEAL WITH IT.
This is as bad as our supposed “sense of entitlement” and I would hope they could find something meaningful to write other than dipping into that well again.
I saw that too

Sometimes they should just put the year before the teams name. The ’Hawks as a franchise have faced adversity before, in fact, this group is facing this very same situation for the 3rd time in 2 years. The question remains, how many times has this recent Flyers group been in this situation? How many times have they been successful? The answer is 1 and they failed against Buffalo in 2006.

I have a ritual of blasting the hell out of Chelsea Dagger after work driving through the parking lot. Since I started doing this, (game 5 of Nashville) the hawks have only lost once (game 1 vs Vancouver). The last 2 games in Philly I didn’t work and therefore didn’t have my blastathon of Chelsea Dagger for the world to hear, but never fear. I worked today and continued the ritual :)

try not to break any barstools this time
How would you like a job where, every time you make a mistake, a big red light goes on and 18,000 people boo?
gotta love how
in a 2-2 series with the Hawks still having home ice advantage, NHL network is burring us.
The NHL office is out on the east coast
of course there burring us , night of the living red tonight.
Heroes get remembered... but Legends never die.
So what are you gonna be Blackhawks? Heroes or Legends?
"Everything I know about life, I learned from my father watching the Blackhawks. It can all be summed up in 2 words, 2 simple words that ring over and over in my memory. Detroit Sucks!!! Detroit Sucks!!!"
I don't care how we win,
lucky , etc. the Hawks can not lose 3 in a row and still win the whole thing, being a Chicago fan I am scared and nervous as hell tonight. let’s go 4 feathers.
just wow
a reporter just asked Q how you get lucky bounces…because they can control such things… /facepalm
it's a very important game...
but I can’t stress it enough, each team still needs to win 4. We don’t win or lose anything tonight.

Buff and Kane
on the same line with Steegs scares me a ton. Kane’s +/- might just fall through the basement floor.
my 2 cents
Toews – Hossa – Kane
Bolland – Shark – Ladd
Versteeg – Buff – Brouwer
Madden – Kop – Paste Eater
onto the 'hacking my lungs out'
part of this cold, hopefully the Hawks can get the phlegm out of their system tonight as well.
I saw Sharp in the paper...
…something about this team still feeling a little swagger. I know you’ve cited the importance of this before.
Gentlemen! I have invented...this thing!
congrats...
I’ll hopefully be where you are today by tomorrow

Uh I hate how the emphasis has shifted to the flyers in the media. it makes the situation sound so much worse then it is.
"Showin' her my Toews-face!"
let the naysayers talk
we shut ’em all up tonight

Let's See...
Had a Graduation party for my daughter so only talked hockey a little, or a lot depending. Everyone’s gone now and I’m screaming out some Who from my Proacs.
I still want Buff off that top line and Kane as well. Drop both down and Hossa up, with Brouwer please.
Just getting into hockey mode now after a fabulous day with my daughter.
Fuck the Flyers. Go Hawks.

But when it was suggested to him that Toews v. Kane seems likely to become a sidebar to every future international hockey tournament, he smiled and said: "I'd like us to win something together, too."
