So how many times since Friday night have you said or heard something along the lines of "It's not a series until the home team loses"?  Quite a few I'd imagine, I know I have.  But maybe like me, you're just sick of it at this point.  Now we're here at a best of 3 series with the Hawks obviously still holding the home ice advantage that has been oh so crucial in this series.

Word out of the morning skate was Ladd was resting his shoulder but that he will play tonight after having a decent game Friday (from the little bit of the game I saw anyway).  The lines also didn't seem to change with Buff still staying up on the top line with Daydream Nation.  Jessie Rogers thinks that's all mind games though.  Sam made the call for Q to jumble things up and I can't say I disagree.  We know Q has no problem changing things up but the real question will be what moves he'll make.  Does he simply drop Byfuglien off the top line or does he split up Toews and Kane?  The Hawks need someway to get around Pronger and either of those scenarios could work. Buff is obviously losing the battle that everyone was hyping before the series and it's dragging Toews and Kane down with him (or Pronger could just be dominating them too).  One way or the other, Q will be trying to get them away from that gap-toothed behemoth. We likely won't see what Q's got up his sleeves until game time.

At home Q is going to get the match-ups he wants which will help since the Flyers were able to take advantage of the quick changes the Hawks made.  There's no need to go into how important the game is going to be, it's the season and it's likely the series.  Toews and the rest of the Hawks have been saying the right things to the press, now it's time for them to get out there and show it on the ice.

Lets Go Hawks

A couple of links

First off, the benefits of splitting up the top line – and what Pronger has been doing to cause this situation – from the guys at the Fifth Feather here.

Secondly, I saw this comic this morning, and was reminded instantly of this series and the fans of both teams.

I have a feeling this is a Niemi game. The Niemi we saw last round. If he plays great, we win, DDN or not.
I hope to God I’m right

I just hope that Hjammer isn't in the dog house after last game

He just whiffed on a couple of clears. It’s not like he was caught out of position or played badly otherwise. Even if we get Antti in Uncle Nemo mode, we need slightly better play by the D for him to work his magic (he can’t cover both sides of the net at once!).

by stacie7 on Jun 6, 2010 5:10 PM CDT up reply actions

To be honest, he didn't do much wrong last game

The Giroux goal was the defense’s fault, and another (Leino’s?) hit Versteeg and kind of looped over him. Not much he could do on either one, even if he had played like he did in Game 1 against the Sharks. I think the defense needs to step it up more than Niemi.

by Germware on Jun 6, 2010 3:53 PM CDT up reply actions

well there was his pass to Carle

Jelly had some killer mistakes, he acknowledged it, and I pray that it will never happen again, at least for 3 more games.

by ahnfire on Jun 6, 2010 4:00 PM CDT up reply actions

I agree...

Nemo played pretty damn good for large portions of the game. The only goal I believe he or any goalie would want back was Richards’ PP backhander…but those are gonna happen to all goalies at some point.

Hammer will be fine as well IMO. Where Philly has been having success is in the area of what I like to call "loose play" ( a term I stole from a friend of mine) where they have a play set up and then the puck gets bounced around a bit and the play breaks up but they still find a way to bang it in the net. The Hawks have to make the Flyers, as coach Q stated in his presser…"make plays" to score goals.

Leighton played what I think was his best game in game 4, but his body of work up to this point in his career does not indicate he can continue playing at that level. If we generate some loose play of our own, (and I firmly believe we will) this should be the complete 60 minute effort we all have been waiting for.

The less a man makes declarative statements, the less apt he is to look foolish in retrospect.

Since it was asked for

Allot of talk has been made of potential Line Changes for Q. I’m calling we go back to what we used for Game 4 of the Nashville series (well what I proposed).

But as we know Q had not made up his mind, so he reverted to plan “B” used in Game 5 vs NSH

Here are the lines pulled out of Niemi’s butt!

Line 1: Sopel-Skille-Ladd (The Oh Fuck Line)
Line 2: Hammer-Huet-Bickel (The -24 line)
Line 3: Seabs-Eager-Sharp (You got the be fucking kidding me line)
Line 4: Johnsson-Madden-Fraser (The Sure let another in line)

D1 : Kane-Niemi
D2: Versteeg-Crawford
D3: Buff-Eager

G1: Kopecky (Guaranteed no low shots will get through!)
G2: Brouwer

Scratch: The Lazy one, poor work ethic Guy, the foreign jinx, Soupy, Bolland and whoever else

by Powrfwd37 on Jun 6, 2010 7:09 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah, it's been a ride ... I guess I had to go to that place to get to this one.

Well, nobody in their right mind can predict what may happen tonight and after Friday night – it’s over for me. I’ll go on a limb and say that we’ll win Game 7, but that’s not tonight is it?

We can compare it other series we’ve been in before like Calgary, Vancouver, and Nashville but it really doesn’t feel the same. The stakes are that much higher with the games meaningful with the victories that much more rewarding and the defeats that much more harder to swallow. We’ve seen our share of the latter, but tonight may it be the former.

I hate to sound like I have some ‘sense of entitlement’ but has any franchise been through what we’ve been through? Have they had to endure a boss that simply didn’t give a fuck about us or the team that was, supposed to, represent us? From President Trophy winners to first round casualties to swept finalists to years of obscurity to prominance like we’ve never seen – we’ve seen it all haven’t we? A win tonight and the emotions going into Wednesday will be at an all-time high.

So let it be done ‘Hawks. You’ve been ‘the team to beat’ all season long and now it’s time to validate it with 2 wins in 3 games. It’s time to believe and to achieve and now is not the time to get roadblocked by a single defenceman or an undeserving judgement call. In the words of Al Davis – Just Win Baby.

Your tune for tonight’s Stanley Cup Finals Game 5 is Enimem’s – Not Afraid. Have to say that this track is pretty deep, so enjoy it and the moments that are about to unfold tonight; may they be positive.

Sometimes they should just put the year before the teams name. The ’Hawks as a franchise have faced adversity before, in fact, this group is facing this very same situation for the 3rd time in 2 years. The question remains, how many times has this recent Flyers group been in this situation? How many times have they been successful? The answer is 1 and they failed against Buffalo in 2006.

When teams are tied after 4 games

the team the first team that wins 2 of the remaining games has won the Stanley Cup every time.

Guys.. Guys..

Im sorry.. I just realized that the hawks losing is my fault.

I have a ritual of blasting the hell out of Chelsea Dagger after work driving through the parking lot. Since I started doing this, (game 5 of Nashville) the hawks have only lost once (game 1 vs Vancouver). The last 2 games in Philly I didn’t work and therefore didn’t have my blastathon of Chelsea Dagger for the world to hear, but never fear. I worked today and continued the ritual :)

I do too. After 10 consecutive home games in this season’s playoffs coming down to the wire thus introducing myself to Lipitor, it’s about damn time there is a playoff home game to settle my heart down …. but I’m not counting on it.

Motivation

"Great moments are born from great opportunity. And that’s what you have here tonight, boys. That’s what you have earned here tonight. One game. If we played ‘em 10 times, they might win nine. But not this game. Not tonight. Tonight, we skate with ’em. Tonight, we stay with ’em, and we shut them down because we can! Tonight, we are the greatest hockey team in the world. You were born to be hockey players, every one of you. You were meant to be here tonight. This is your time. Their time is done; it’s over."
