Report: Andrew Ladd Traded To Atlanta
I guess the Thrashers aren't quite done picking up some pieces from the Hawks. There is nothing official yet but there are all kinds of rumors flying around that the Blackhawks have traded Andrew Ladd to the Thrashers. I believe Darren Dreger broke the news and is now saying Ladd will be shipped out for a "pick and a prospect".
This is the first of the moves that hurts. Buff, Eager and Sopel were all pretty expendable and generally overpaid... we knew those moves were coming and we were ready. The VERSTEEG! trade also made sense - due to last year's bumbling at the deadline he was overpaid and didn't have a great spot on this team.
With Ladd being a restricted free agent though, there was hopes he could be re-signed. There were also rumors though that teams were offering him $3 Million a year which is quite a boost from the $1.6 he was paid last year. If the Hawks were worried they couldn't sign him then getting a pick and a prospect might make more sense than simply the pick they'd receive on compensation. This may be the first time we've seen the Hawks make a pure strategic move, not simply a salary dump (though they've been good at not just dumping money, they're getting a lot of good picks and prospects in return so far). A lot more on this as we get some more time.
Word is that the prospect is Ivan Vishnevskiy.. the pick is a second rounder.
UPDATE: A reaction from The Falconer of Bird Watchers Anonymous on Twitter: "Much happier with Ladd deal than earlier CHI trade. I think Vish will be a NHL bust or bottom pairing D, smart to leverage him."

Well I said that I thought one more player had to go
between Ladd, Niemi and Hjammer. That was the reason for the post and the title. Now Ladd’s gone.

This one I don't quite get.
And I absolutely hate it, but I’m sure Stan isn’t concerned about that.
What do we get if Ladd goes elsewhere on an offer sheet? Wouldn’t we have gotten virtually the same thing in compensation, but with a higher pick? This sounds like a strange exchange. I hope (HOPE!) that Stan has something better lined up then. Now we’re simply taking away from the team without much cap room gained. Unless something else is in the works, a large chunk of our bench will be AHLers.
Sounds like we need another “back away from the ledge” pep talk from Sam.
The Chicago Blackhawks -- 2010 Stanley Cup Champions!!!!!!
"I can't stop crying and laughing." Preacher
I think the prospect is the difference
If we let him go on an offer sheet, then we would have just gotten the pick. If Bowman knew someone was going to over pay him (and I think 3 mil for Ladd is over paying in the salary cap era) and he could get a prospect he liked AND a pick comparable to the one he would get form the offer sheet, why not? I hate losing Ladd as well, but if we were going to, might as well get as much as we could.
Man, that fax malfunction last season is really hurting us this off season …

Not if that prospect is Spencer Mahachek
I mean I like the guy and he is a hell of a player but there is a reason he was not playing in Atlanta, right? Ladd=gone=sad. Who’s next?
LUigi was found dead at the scene, murdered by a Chelsea Dagger.
What happened to "Not needing to make anymore moves"?
Dammit all to hell. I agree that stocking up picks and prospects is a good idea, but prospects that get shipped twice in a year, Vishnevskiy and Paradis/DiDomenico (can’t remember which) is not a good sign in my book.
So now we’re relying on Stalberg and fucking Marty Reasoner to be our depth? The Hawks depth was the fucking key last season. Fucking Stan better not be flexing his GM muscle to show the team is his.
The Versteeg trade and Ladd trade don’t look or smell like the original Versteeg or Sharp trades where it was a clear win. Our fucking window to keep winning is still now and we’re worried about 3-5 years from now?
I don’t get it and I don’t agree…..right now.
by herecomethehawks77 on Jul 1, 2010 4:12 PM CDT reply actions
If someone and offers Ladd $3MM what's Stan to do?
As most out there are theorizing, Atlanta probably offered Ladd a contract Stan couldn’t afford… so move him and get your pick and prospect.

Holy Shit!
I played this same exact scenario out last night while I was venting about the Steeg trade. just as I was told that Steeg was the better move, I thought what if someone wants to pay Ladd more than we are willing and we wind up losing both. All I have to say is that the boys in Rockford better be ready to play!
II Can Finally Die Happy Now!
Also
Bochenski had been around a fair few teams before he got traded to Boston for Versteeg. Not saying Bowman has anything like this up his sleeve, just making the point that even if prospects have been passed around a bit, they can still a) turn into good players, or b) be traded for good players.
Not the end of the world, not by a long shot.
yep, that's got to be it

seems like it
apparently he also has some serious wheels and decent hands. And as a bonus, as someone already mentioned, he’s not too hard on the eyes.
Also, we must not forget that when the Hawks got Sharpie from Philadelphia, he couldn’t even crack the flyers’ lineup and now he is a top 6 forward on a Stanley Cup championship team.

UGH...
Today, I am NOT a happy human either.
I only have like five days left in Afghanistan, but TODAY, I am depressed about the Hawks.
I should be REALLY excited to be getting ready to get out of this hellhole very soon, but Ladd was traded, and my man-crush now wears black and green, instead of black and red. I was fairly confident that Burish would be kept, because he wasn’t going to be expensive to keep (Barely over 1 million per year for Dallas to get him) and he really brought so much energy, grit, and heart to the team. What’s a Sharpie to do, without his Burish, on the road? Who to pull pranks with? Who will his new roomie be? It changes soo much, in so many little ways.
I really hoped that we’d keep Burish.
At least now I have an actual reason to wear my Stars jersey (besides the fact that I do own it).

Ladd
loss does hurt. Now you have a problem – you no longer have three lines – you have two and only one forward who can go to the net for abuse. Unless someone develops real quick, or there is someone else waiting to come in, you don’t have a team that can get to the Cup finals right now.
I'm Lloyd Pettit's love child!
uh
Brouwer, Kopecky, Stalberg have the size to cram the net — not optimal use of their skill sets but we can still do it. Beach when he’s ready too, of course. I probably left some people out.
and perhaps Beach
strangely, we might still have size next year despite losing what’s his name and what’s his name.
Not necessarily.
We need to confirm the trade – then we can panic. I am not blaming the Hawks, if there was a sheet going to be signed, you have to do something. Just saying, if Ladd is gone you don’t have a power forward except Brouwer. Kopecky isn’t. Kids are just that. Kids. We saw what happened to the scum relying on kids.
I'm Lloyd Pettit's love child!
I guess...
Hopefully there will be a signing or something. I’m not to worried, but I guess that won’t comfort anyone. :)
Absolutely
there has to be another move. Right now you don’t have a third line.
I'm Lloyd Pettit's love child!
Also Brouwer fucking sucked in the playoffs so Im really not even sure we can count on that.

Im aware that has an effect. But his play dropped off even before his dad got sick.
Compadres! It is imperative that we crush the freedom fighters before the start of the rainy season......And by that I mean it’s time for the worker of the week award!"
No, it really didn't
I think he had a good game Sunday night, and Monday morning was gone for personal reasons.
He got better as the playoffs went on and his dad got better.
My memory could be hazy here…..but wasn’t he bumped to the 4th line a month or so before his dad got sick?
Compadres! It is imperative that we crush the freedom fighters before the start of the rainy season......And by that I mean it’s time for the worker of the week award!"
I can't say for sure,
but I thought Fraser/Eager/Kop were rocking the 4th line leading up to the playoffs and that’s how Fras started in the playoffs.
That's what I thought too
Unless Brouwer came back before the playoffs, he didn’t start on the 4th line until then.
I thought he had been playing on the top or second line...
then when he came back he had been dropped to the 4th line and we were all, wait, what?
Well clearly we cant remember! In any case we can all agree we are rooting for him next year because we are going to need him in the worst way.

actually I remember reading an article that said his mom came home to find his dad on the floor
which is how they discovered it. and he had been lying there alone for a while, so imagine coming home, your wife tells you to call home, and hearing the news that they found your dad collapsed on the floor and now he’s in the hospital with a coma & undergoing surgery for an aneurysm.
really, is it a surprise that his play dropped off? if that happened to me, I’d probably be useless as well.

his Dad was on death’s door, and after his Dad got better he was better. Not on the same form as before, but presumably he’ll be back to normal by next year.

What he needs to do is hit the gym and watch tape of Buff against Vancouver in the playoffs each of the last two seasons. The fans and likely our coaches will ask him to fill the role Buff had.
Compadres! It is imperative that we crush the freedom fighters before the start of the rainy season......And by that I mean it’s time for the worker of the week award!"
Buff needs to put in a tape of Brouwer from the regular season
Troy Brouwer is going to be fine and if you keep him with the right linemates, he’ll be a better all around player than Buff.
Troy Brouwer was a more consistent net presence than Buff all year, it changed in the spring with TBrow’s dad being sick and Buff deciding he’d like to be a force. Give me Troy Brouwer over Buff all day.

So Hawks have got a shit-ton
of picks and prospects now. And more cap room. So after prospect camp when Q and the Gang have had a good look at them and decide what they like and who they don’t…
Stan can look around the league and identify some slightly over-paid players that can fit the needs of the team for this year and now has the assetts to pull of a trade. All while filling in a couple or three prospects on 4th line, 3rd pair and bench.

They were still pretty solid contenders this year

"It's The Chicago Blackhawks, man." ~ Jeremy Roenick, June 9th, 2010.
Oh I'm not saying they aren't like that
But I do respect that team and I think that it’s one of those dragons we have to exorcise before we can think about being a dynasty…
Probably a horrible analogy but something akin to Nadal having to beat Federer on a surface other than clay to really prove that he’d emerged.
I have thought Detroit is a repsectable team
and they have some very talented players.
but WE won the Stanley Cup.
our team, even now, are made of Playoff contenders.
YOUNG Playoff contenders.
I’ll say it now because we climbed the mountain and reveled in the glory: FUCK THE SCUM LETS GO HAWKS!!!!
"It's The Chicago Blackhawks, man." ~ Jeremy Roenick, June 9th, 2010.
Even when Franzen was out
SCUM gave us a pretty tough time every time we played them. Except for that 3-0 shutout (NIEMI!!!), I think we still have trouble matching up against them. An extra year and a Stanley Cup win for our core might give us the maturity to beat them now, but until we start beating them regularly, I’m not counting them out.
You mean the two 3-0 shutouts?
Because I’m pretty sure we killed them twice in Nov-Dec.

They have a point
I mean, it’s not like Toews, Kane and Hossa are once-in-a-generation type players and Ladd, Byfuglien and Versteeg aren’t nice accessories to have on a Cup-worthy team, right?
Oh, sorry, I got that backwards. Toews is going to be pimp-slapping their asses for the next (minimum) 5 years.
thank you
sensibility is becoming rare these days
"It's The Chicago Blackhawks, man." ~ Jeremy Roenick, June 9th, 2010.
Can I just say that i am officially SICK of TSN? 'cuz i am.
So how is it that we STILL have Toews, Kane, Keith, Seabrook, Sharp, Brouwer, Bolland, Campbell and, oh yeah, MARIAN FUCKING HOSSA, and yet since we’ve lost our 6th D-man, a rotating 4th-liner, two guys that, while displaying top-6 talent, were never consistent enough in the Reg Season AS WELL AS Playoffs in comparison to the members of “The Core”, plus now Ladd being traded, NOW we’re fucked and the way to The Stanley Cup is paved in gold for the Vancouver Canucks??
Pft! Please.
Yes, Buff came up big in the playoffs with 11 goals. Know who else had 11 Playoff goals? Patrick Sharp (and thats after coming off his 4th or 5th CONSECUTIVE 20+ GOAL SEASON!)
Yes, Versteeg had some big moments in the Playoffs. Remember what other bottom 6 forward who came up big as well? Dave Bolland (and thats after coming off major back surgery). How many Playoff SHG did Versteeg have? I remember Bolland have one in 3 different series. Remeber when Versteeg turned into a fucking ghost for a LARGE chunk of the Reg Season? Remember when he was in Q’s Dog House? I do.
Yes, Ladd was fierce, tough as nails, and chipped in a good amount of timely, ugly goals when finesse wasn’t working. I am very confident Brouwer is able to pick up the slack. He has the size, the speed, the balls (yes, I think Troy is a ballsy, tough player) and a good pinch more offensive talent that Ladd. Ill wait on saying Beach will fill the void because I’ve never seen him play even though everything i read about him has me all smiles.
…
Nothing is fucked here, dude.

secretly I'm hoping LeBron comes here
and all those bandwagon fans go to the Bulls. This Hawks bandwagon is getting rowdy and I’m getting tempted to pull over and start kicking people off ledges.
I like this description of the course of action you're planning to go with
let’s do it.

that would be great
I don’t give two shits about basketball, or LeBron, but that would help me out . especially the kicking people.

I heard that even some random drunkard Predators fans jumped on our Bandwagon! Can you imagine?
well, that Pred fan endeared himself to the bandwagon driver with his drunken hilarity

the emo-screaming-OMGTHEWORLDISOVER bandwagoners that I’m obligated to pick up are getting irritating though. It may be time to start culling the herd.

Damn
I agree with just about everyone here that this one hurts. We’ve lost the toughest guy on the team. The only person happy about this is Ryan Kesler who won’t get dick slapped by Ladd anymore. But it Ladd can get $3M a year, more power to him, let’s see what Stan does now, if anything, to replace that toughness. Kyle Beach, anyone?
Realease the Beach!
The more moves the make the more I feel Mr. Beach will be wearing an Idian Head sweater come October.

I would guess Vishnevskiy and Stalberg have a chance to fill the roles of Sope and Steeg.

I get the feeling
Stan isn’t done. I think he’s going to trade our prospects for someone else or get a free agent at some point. Remember, fools & children shouldn’t see things half-done, and this team is not fully done until puck-drop in October.
i think we could still trade Skille away, but i don’t see us doing the same with Stalberg, esp since we just got him. but then again, Hamhuis is redefining “job security” — though i expect Vancouver will be his last stop till the season starts.

Everybody should just calm the fuck down and wait until we actually start, you know, playing the fucking games in October. Then we’ll see what we’ve got. I’m betting it’s going to be pretty great. Remember, we’ve got Marian Hossa, and they don’t. (Not to mention Toews, Kane, Keith, Sharp, Seabrook, Campbell, Bolland, Hjalmarsson, et al.) I’m thinking any GM in the league would take that group for starters and feel pretty good about their chances of putting together a cup contending team.
The world is NOT ending.

No panic here
Couldn’t agree more – the core is solid.
Two points of interest – first, interesting to see Stan’s game plan in action.
Second, there are roster spots to be filled. Will be interesting to see the roster take shape.
Personally, I wish the season started tomorrow – the sooner we get to see the banner raised above the dejected, aging Scum.

i think people have been hinting at this
but when stan says they’re fine on the cap we don’t need to trade anymore, then we start hemorrhaging players like steeg, and can’t afford to pay ladd..i have to think he has something in mind…ladd may have been because of threatening arbit…or an impending offer sheet, but steeg wasn’t necessary unless stan had something in mind ahead of time…I"m going to put my faith in him since he hasn’t led us astray, and the alternative is going to lead to a DUI.

Ladd
Looks like Ladd will be paid like a 2nd liner, and will likely be given a place on Atlanta’s 2nd line. Good luck to him. It wasn’t going to happen with the Hawks.

Buff? Eager? Spencer Mahachek?

Too bad to win the Stanley Cup your best players have to be your best players.
For Chicago, Toews and Kane were just that while Luongo and the Sedins were not and never have been that for Vancouver.
You can add all the depth pieces you want but if your top guns misfire in the playoffs you’re done.

I have been completely zen about all of the deals so far, especially because moving depth forwards means we’re more likely to keep the defensive core intact. I can see where Stan is going with this, I guess, is what I’m trying to say.
Thank you
What I’ve been trying to say, but said far more eloquently than I could. Defense seems to be winnning Cups these days, so anything that keeps our more-than-solid defense unchanged is fine by me.
Look at what D is bringing in these days
Even if we end up with too many of these guys, this is a very good investment.
We knew they had to deal away most of their depth
The good thing is we got a bunch of young W’s that can come thru
exactly
this is a perfect opportunity to use all the minor league talent we’ve got squirreled away in Rockford. It’s not going to be a perfect situation, but none of our untouchables have been touched, we’ve got three centers secured (I’m counting Sharp) and if Meatball signs, that’s our top-five defense coming back as well.

I am sure most Hawk fans are starting to rile up their anger (mostly because of the cap...) and I can already see the animosity in the comments...
I do understand that most of our roster is getting to a point where their AARP cards (like one comment said…) are printed and we are probably looking at a dismal season in 2011-2012…Pretty sure the next season will be exciting to watch( we will still make the post season and so will the hawks)…but admit the fact that it is going to be hard to DEFEND the cup with all the losses that you had…not saying you guys cannot..you will probably rule the roost in the west…but the east is getting better (atleast with what the devils and the pens have done..).
by HAWKSARECLIPPEDWITHOUTWINGS on Jul 1, 2010 6:09 PM CDT reply actions
Agreed. This is the hockey world we all live in now. All teams need to adjust on the fly from year to year with the reality of the cap. Depth, scouting and the draft are paramount for all clubs.

I guess you misconstrued the last post…It was just a sarcastic remark to show how things can turn upside down in moments..it happens to every team and in the NHL …happens to all the teams..!!!! with regards to the rivalry….Even if the hawks were the ones from the Dollar bill era…the rivalry would still be heated….but the last season the games between the hawks and wings were special…just hoping that this ‘firesale’ doesn’t that intensity that we had in 09-10….

...
but admit the fact that it is going to be hard to DEFEND the cup with all the losses that you had
Because losing a 3rd-pair shot blocker, a guy that showed up for the middle two series of the playoffs, a paste-eater, a guy better known for his ‘fro than his play, a guy who can’t skate as well as his mouth can move, Ladd and Versteeg means everything when it’s not even Independence Day and we still have Kane, Toews, Hossa, Sharp, Bolland, Keith, Biscuit, Hjalphabet, and Soupy to build around.
By nature it’s hard to defend a title. It’s not because we don’t have the core young pieces in place.

Wings fans also thought this after the Penguins lost Hossa, Malone, Roberts, and Whitney after reaching the Finals in 2008. They met them again in 2009 with catastrophic results.

Now how does everyone feel about Versteeg going bye bye
because I heard a lot of justification for it that they would now be able to keep Ladd. This is a fucking joke. I hope everyone enjoyed the championship…we won’t be seeing another for awhile….
reality can sometimes be ugly
how many game winning goals in the playoffs are now no longer on this roster…
Kop
scored 25% of our GWGs in the Cup Finals. As long as the goals come, it doesn’t matter where they came from.
by Germware on Jul 1, 2010 6:26 PM CDT up reply actions 2 recs
I never understood the concept of the GWG
People don’t count game-winning runs/RBI in baseball… I mean, a GWG could come in the first 15 seconds of a 1-0 game. It’s not necessarily a measure of clutchness or anything.
So you're assuming that because guys who scored
playoff GWGs are gone we won’t be able to win in the playoffs now? I’m not saying these losses don’t hurt, but why not wait and see how the new roster shakes out, or even, how the hawks play next year, before dragging everyone down.
Ditto for CNS
Go but your Thrashers tickets now!
You’re nuts if you are this scared, this fast. Our core of both our Offense (6 out of top 8) and Defense (all core 4) are returning. We had the best Defensemen in the league last season, and the best player from both the US, Canadian and Slovak Olympic teams from last year. And our best goalie should get signed too. I am guessing that 90% of this thread had never heard of Steeger, Buff or Ladd before last year. We might not win +110 points in the regular season next year, but we’ll be ready for the cup run.
people are worried about the Hawks' depth more than our core
and that’s what won the Cup last season. Not saying I’m totally with them, but there is literally nothing Bowman can do but recharge the farm and use what we have (bickell, skille, dowell, etc.)
by northernsails on Jul 1, 2010 9:24 PM CDT up reply actions
concur'd
the depth is what really made us invincible in the press, but it was also a commitment to TEAM defense, and it didn’t hurt that we had a DYNAMITE Defensive Top-4. We’ve had guys, as you said (Bickell, Skille, Dowell), stewing more a roster callup but our team was so stacked with guys who were starting to get hot at the right times (ie, Versteeg, Buff) or just being reliable enough (Hendry, Fraser, Eager, Burrish) that we had no need to call guys up. I mean, Skille has been down in Rockford for HOW long? Haven’t they dedicated a wing of the rink to Crawford already? He certainly has been there long enough.
i agree. if anything positive can be seen in this situation (and there are a few things) it can be that the guys in rockford and our able european prospects are now being shown that the jobs are there to be had so you better put up or shut up, as they say.
ok, im going to go celebrate my little bro’s birthday (not so little really) and drink my face off and remind myself that at least my team isnt the team that traded away Olli Jokinen just so to sign him back a year later. Calgary. Yeeesh.

Stanley Cup Banner raising ceremony with half the team that earned it not there…
ironically, I met Huet
recently and he is one of the nicest guys/pro athletes i have ever met. he was polite and interested in holding a conversation, etc. Seemed like a very grounded and stand-up guy….I wish he could play goalie, lol.
I've met him in person too, and he is really nice.
I also wish he was a better goalie, just because I want good things to happen for him. He once held a 20 minute conversation with me about his goaltending technique on soft ice, just because I asked him a question after a morning skate. The rest of the team held the bus for him, because he was so absorbed in explaining things and drawing on napkins and stuff to make his point. (Nemo listened in, and occasionally corrected Cris’s opinions or diagrams. The two of them were hilarious together.)
by spokeinthebandwagon on Jul 1, 2010 6:24 PM CDT up reply actions
I'm really opening myself up for a shit storm to come raining down but....
I contend that Huet is a better goalie, actually better than Niemi. By that I mean if you had to pick one for your team, had never seen either play before, and were shown game film of both on their best days, Huet would be picked at least 75% of the time. This guy is a top tier NHL goaltender, and if we wind up with him as the second part of our goal tandem next season we are in excellent shape in that department.
(I just love poking a stick into a hornets nest. What fun!)
"Life is a long lesson in humility."

Huet was considered 'Elite' before Tallon paid him
The work every-other game and only see 20 shots doesn’t work with him.
He needs a change of scenery.
He's no longer elite because he makes too much money?
I don’t understand.
"Life is a long lesson in humility."
- James M. Barrie
He is no longer elite
because he never was elite and cracked everytime he was the number one guy except for about 3 weeks in Washington which seemed to justify this big contract – Tallon’s biggest mistake. If Rocky is willing to eat the contract in Rockford – great.
I'm Lloyd Pettit's love child!
Our opinoins of his talent aside
I just don’t see an astute business man (which Rocky seems to be) being willing to ‘eat’ that kind of money. Unless Huet is moved in such a way that his entire contract goes with him, he’s on this team next season.
"Life is a long lesson in humility."
- James M. Barrie
Tax write-off?
Some people have a time share, maybe a motorcycle, for recreation. Rocky has a sports franchise.
Rich people do weird things…
Money isn't the issue
The goalie rotation and lack of shots do not bode well with some goalies. He needs a change of scenery or needs a rotation that’s tilted more in his favor.
Seeing 30+ shots a game and starting 65 games are not going to happen in Chicago.
When Niemi had games that he faced few shots he also had his worse games.
Point being that the low shot total thing seems to be an unfavorable circumstance for most goalies performance. If we’re going to judge Huet not being a good fit here on that basis then Niemi may struggle next season also.
"Life is a long lesson in humility."

still not irony. it would be ironic if you were the cause of Huet’s ineptitude as a goalie, as an example. it’s ok, you’re still learning. your body is changing. you’ll figure it out someday.

He is to a degree the British version of George Carlin, love them both. As much as I like “football” it can be a very frustrating game to watch, too many stoppages and the same commercials over and over, dumb assed announcers, etc. I’m an old man who played a little “soccer” when I lived out east as a kid, the game was big there, just like hockey. Back in the early 70’s it was much different than in the midwest, they had traveling soccer teams which I don’t remember them having here, it was much more competitive in general, you had to be really good to make the better teams. I was just starting out and got traded to a lesser team due to my inexperience, it was the first time I’d ever been traded after all my years , maybe 5, of playing baseball, which I was really good at. I was about 13 at the time.
I don’t know how it is in the city and burbs now, I’m out west of the burbs, but here the Mexicans have pickup games at the local park all the time, much like we did as kids playing baseball.

I was just thinking the same thing
People remember stuff from last November on this site – a few weeks is nothing.
How would you like a job where, every time you make a mistake, a big red light goes on and 18,000 people boo?
I admit
I go back and read archives & comments, especially from when I wasn’t around.
Reading about people freaking out back last June/July is quite reassuring, actually. It was all, OMG WHY DID WE SIGN HOSSA FOR SO MUCH WE’LL NEVER RESIGN KANE KEITH OR TOEWS NOW NOOOOOOOoooo….
and now look- we have DDN & Duncs locked up, Hossa for a long time, a strong 1st D pairing and possibly 2nd (please hurry up and sign Jelly, Stan…), Sharpie and Bolland and THE STANLEY CUP. Personally, I’m not going to freak about roster changes because: it’s part of the game, I can’t do anything about it, and who knows what next year will bring?
We are definitely on the same page
Personally, I’m not going to freak about roster changes because: it’s part of the game, I can’t do anything about it, and who knows what next year will bring?
Maybe it’s just the eternal optomist in me, but I don’t really think anyone should worry until we see how the team plays together the first part of the season. We all knew the team was going to change due to the cap issues. I think we have alot of talent coming up in the ranks. We should be OK.
How would you like a job where, every time you make a mistake, a big red light goes on and 18,000 people boo?
I was hoping for a shot of your optimism.
I hope they can somehow bring together the same team chemistry they had this year. I feel Burish was a big part of that and he will be missed, despite what the Burish haters say. I don’t think it was his play that was as important as his attitude. Hopefully someone can fill that void.
39 years of pain vaporized by one OT goal.
Not to take anything away from Burish
at all, because I love him, but he also was out most of the season. His role/impact was probably diminished already.
I think your Badger love is making your glasses a bit foggy there ;)
not saying that Burish wasn’t a great guy in the locker room, but I’m not sold on the fact that he was the glue guy in the room. I think you got Toews for work ethic/competitive attitude, Sharp for levity, Kaner for dumbass entertainment/lil brother-style teasing, Bolly for sneaky underhand pranks (c’mon…he is so that guy), and Hossa for age & experience.
We may have lost our showboating guys (Bur, Versteeg) but I don’t think we’re want for chemistry with the guys we have left.
Trade Niemi and ACTUALLY use him in goal then!

The fourth line, aside from a three week stretch at the end of the season,
was mediocre this season. Two years ago, yeah it was great, but last year not so much. If you honestly think that Burish, Eager, and Fraser (themselves AHL nobodies a couple years ago) are that much better than the top 3 energy guys we have in Rockford and that we should actually pay them almost double their salaries (which, I believe, is happening, at least w/ Burish), well, I don’t know what to tell you.

The Hawks have 13 players signed for 55.37 million dollars. After having bonuses applied from last yea,r their cap is 55.2 million dollars. If Huet is sent to the minors, his salary will be replaced by Hammer and Niemi. This means they still have to add 5 more players and they do not have any cap room.
I hope I’m wrong but it looks like that at least one more big salary has to go. Campbell’s 7 million would be nice to get off the books but I don’t see anyone taking that salary. That would mean Sharp, Bolland or Hossa has to go.

NHL numbers has us at 50.3 mil right now for 13 players
That includes Huet. Send him to rockford, save 5 mil. Sign Niemi and Hjalmarsson, it’ll probably come close to 5 mil. That’s 14 players with about 9 mil left to sign the rest.
We’ll be a-ok. Don’t worry. Sure the season may not be as great as it was last year, but you never know what new talent will emerge out of Rockford.

You left out the 4.2 million cap hit on the bonuses
carried over from this season. So there is only 4 million left to sign 6 players. Crawford will be added to the roster and is a hit of 800,000. So they’re down to 3.2 million to sign 5 players.
Maybe, just once, someone will call me 'Sir' without adding, 'You're making a scene."

I was just talking this morning about how glad I was that the Hawks decided to keep Ladd
so much for that…
ughh
who’s left?
Core players and a bunch of rookies it seems
Not to sound too cliche here...
But a lot of these Hawks were rookies rather recently. Despite what we hear from Wings fans, this organization and the ability to develop young players should be worlds better than it used to be. Now by no means do I expect Beach, Skille, or Dido to be the equivalent of Buff, Steeg, and Sopel next year…but we might be waxing a bit nostalgic for some of these guys.
With exception to Versteeg
Buff & Sopel were piss poor skaters.
A guy that can skate like the wind is more valuable (long term) than a guy who can block shots or use his girth in the slot.
buff's
winner against the Rangers put away any notion I ever had that he’s a piss poor skater. He’s just so fucking care-free. If the guy cared just cared…
Fast doesn't equal good
If he skated like that every shift, he’d have a heart attack.
Great examples of good skaters would be Modano, Niedermayer, you know…guys that look like they’re coasting but they are actually hauling ass.
That Viktor kid is a hellua skater. That’s natural…you can’t teach that and it doesn’t come with experience. Want proof? Sopel…
I'd be happy with
disciplined for his rookie campaign.
I would make this trade any day of the week
Just put #19 raising the cup as a background and look at it and I truly don’t care who we get rid of as the first time in 49 years is pretty damn special.
We all knew that this would happen
It’s an inevitable reality of the hard cap. I think part of the reason folks are so emotional/upset (including myself) is that it’s only been three weeks since the Best Sports Moment of a Lifetime. That’s the pitfall of a SCF in June. It would have been nice to have a couple of additional weeks for the guys to celebrate as a team.
It’s going to be depressing that come banner raising night, half a dozen players (please Jebus, let that be all) will not be there to see it in person. Um, I think I need to watch Game 6 again now.

The next couple years are gonna be spent tenderizing that rookie meat into something serviceable for a Cup run. I have ultimate faith Toews, Keith and Sharp to keep this thing on the rails until we’re ready to climb the mountain again.
(Disclaimer: Stan if you trade Sharp, I’ll find you stick shiv between your ribs).

grammar issues aside
this isn’t an evisceration. It is inevitable. Again, there was absolutely nothing that Stan Bowman can do. Be happy he was savvy enough to pick up some decent prospects and 10 effing picks in the draft.

I am happy about what we were able to get back but
the loss of goals and assists is not the only thing that needs to be replaced. I don’t want to get into an argument about what chemistry means to a team but last year, on this team, I think it counted for a hell of a lot. I would say the loss of Ladd, Buff, Eager, Sopel, Versteeg, Burish and Madden pretty effectively eviscerates a large part of the chemistry element of this team. Not a lot of laughs left in that dressing room.
i think you underestimate others.
if we’re going to get into a debate about ‘chemistry’, then yes Burrish was a prankster, but so are Sharp and Kaner. Madden didn’t strike me as much of a funny guy, but a great veteran presence he certainly was. We have that in Toews, who has now just about done it all. I think the most important thing for Bowman is to keep poisonous players out of the clubhouse, otherwise, as was demonstrated during the SCF, these guys are pretty good with each other and do almost everything together.

Hope you're right
b/c someone’s gonna need to keep it light in that room with the weight of a Cup defense on their shoulders.
I really dont think this group looks at the Cup as a 'weight'
I think they’re far too young and free-wheeling in general to feel that way.

Imagine if...
Ladd demanded a bigger contract and got one at the expense of 2 other players. That would be locker room poison.
Buff, Steeg, Sopel – those were Tallon contracts.
Well think of it this way,...
1. Buff and Versteeg were alternative very good and in Q’s doghouse for being extraordinarily stupid on the ice.
2. I’m guessing Burish’s schtick was wearing thin with McDonough, Bowman and especially Q. Plus now my wife will no longer have the urge to drop her panties everytime she sees him during pregame skate arounds.
Chemistry? There is still plenty of solid chemistry in place. Winning the Cup is chemistry enough. This isn’t a comedy club but rather a professional hockey team. Somebody will pick up the slack of making prank calls to Toews’ hotel room at 3:00 AM.
The Blackhawks and the Stanley Cup in 2010.
Chemistry is overrated.
Winning creates chemistry, rubber chickens and shaving cream don’t. These guys created the “chemistry” that led to the Cup in, well, less than 2 years.
I disagree
There are plenty of examples of winning teams in all sports that had terrible chemistry and could not put it together in the playoffs when it mattered. Winning helps but it does not create chemistry if there are cancers in the locker room.
39 years of pain vaporized by one OT goal.
And countless examples of teams that had players who hated one another
and won championships. Case in point: ‘85 Bears. Ryan and Ditka, the leaders of the team, couldn’t stand one another, yet they dominated all season.
Chemistry is something made up by the media because it sounds nice when they have no facts to write about.

Like most of you, I am unhappy that Ladd is gone. But we’re less than 12 hours into the rebuilding/retooling/reloading process that is the offseason, and I’m not going to panic over comments like “you only have two lines now” or “this team isn’t deep enough to make a run to the Finals”. Let’s wait and see what happens between now and September. IF no other moves are made, and IF the players who step into the roles formerly held by 16, 33, 5, 55, and 32 are complete failures, THEN we can talk about what a cluster this offseason was. Until then, I’m going to put my faith in the fact that someone with Bowman’s pedigree might know a thing or two about how to get this done, and in the fact that putting Toews, Kane, Keith, Seabrook, Hossa, Sharp, Brouwer, Bolland, Campbell, Hjalmarsson, and Niemi on the ice every night is a pretty good thing regardless of what else happens.
As long as the other 9 guys suiting up aren’t complete dogmeat, that is. Keep workin’ it, Stan!

Hey, Philly made it to the finals and they weren't that deep ...
Anybody who thinks the Hawks don’t have a good team is either greatly understating the core talent or greatly overstating the exiting talent. How about the fact that Keith and Seabrook are just entering their prime and Kane and Toews are about 3 to 4 years away from theirs? Could both of them score 20 points each more next season? Easily. The hawks are definitely still elite in the NHL.
by Billy Charlesbois on Jul 1, 2010 11:49 PM CDT up reply actions
I'm leaning towards the latter
I think everyone here (who isn’t a troll, that is) knows how immensely talented Kane, Toews, Hossa, Sharp, etc are. You would have to lie to yourself to believe in that group.
Can Buff score a lot of goals? Absolutely.
Can Steeg be an explosive, high-power wing? Of course.
But are they better than what the Hawks have secured for some time? No.
by northernsails on Jul 2, 2010 12:00 AM CDT up reply actions
Really?
I thought Philly was deeper than us at forward, but shallower at D.
Of course, I like our players better, but that’s a different story.
Ah, they're all the same player
It’s like having a band full of three rhythm guitar players. That same group limped into the playoffs and beat a bunch of nobodies to get to the finals. I give them credit for amping up their game for the finals, but I think the high energy, big stakes game worked in their favor because of their physicality. Even with that advantage, they couldn’t skate with the Hawks. My philly prediction for next year is they get sick of Lavoilette and quit on him half way through the season and Prongers fuck all attitude gets stale.

going into the thing. Disturbingly so, in fact. Hawks showed how they were lightyears better when they started playing their high-energy game.
by northernsails on Jul 2, 2010 12:16 AM CDT up reply actions
I thought it was "very even" depth wise
but then we started playing the game in a way that benefited our playing style more than theirs and thus we looked way better.
I was saying they were "very even"
based on what the “experts” were saying before it started. Same issues with goaltender (too young, no experience, yadda yadda). Same good defences and solid amounts of scoring from three forward lines.
During the actual series, however, the Hawks showed how they were “lightyears better” when they started actually playing their game after the 2nd intermission of game 4.

"Philly was deeper than us at forward"
You really think so? Man for man? Top to bottom?
I may be picking nits here but I’d give the advantage to the Hawks at forward on pretty much every line, at least by a small margin. And the D, well, yeah, we were miles in front on D.
The Chicago Blackhawks -- 2010 Stanley Cup Champions!!!!!!
"I can't stop crying and laughing." Preacher
That's not depth
I didn’t say the actual players were better. I was saying they could roll deeper with their lines than ours (the consensus was that we had better top 3, but they would get more from their 4th). I believe the TOI bears that out.
it'd be interesting if the TOI does bear that out
cause I recall there was a quote in the media from Richards saying that a major reason why he thinks they lost was the Hawks ability to roll 4 lines at forward whereas they could only roll 3 lines.

Depends on if Carcillo was playing
JVR > Carcillo, obviously.
Not the most straightforward comparison, but eyeballing Eager vs. Laperriere (I believe both of us had a 4th liner who could play PK), Eager had less TOI.
i think, actually, that by saying "3 lines"
he meant HIS line couldn’t perform. Which was true. They got shut down and they were supposed to be the team’s best players.
Actually speaks a lot about his Toews-ness.
But when it was suggested to him that Toews v. Kane seems likely to become a sidebar to every future international hockey tournament, he smiled and said: "I'd like us to win something together, too." -- 2/28/10, so our Captain has said, and so it was done.

TOI was going to be my next question
I just remember Carcillo having, like, NO ice time after the first period, and another one of their guys playing one shift in one of the games (though he might have been a defenseman).
I know Burr and Eags weren’t getting major minutes but I thought we gave our 3rd and 4th lines more TOI than Philly. (But it’s really late and I was up til 3am last night too so I could be way off in my memory.)

Not so fast
Hammer & Niemi aren’t signed yet, so let’s not get ahead of ourselves. Somebody else might be offering him an obscene amount of money just like Ladd (if that was the case)
II Can Finally Die Happy Now!
I somebody is willing to offer to the 1st & 3rd rounder tier for Ladd
You might be right — maybe not for Niemi (looking at the goalie market) but definitely for Hjammer (looking at the obscene payouts to D this year). Question is, are we willing to match amounts in that tier? ($3,119,540 – $4,679,310)
Ladd was going to get an offer >$3 M
As much as I HATE losing Ladd, the bottom line is Bowman made the absolute RIGHT move. The Hawks absolutely cannot afford to overpay for a 3rd liner no matter how good he was at times. This is the reality of the NHL salary cap folks.
Bowman is taking out the emotion and leading this thing with his brains. And for that I give him solid credit no matter how much it hurts to lose Ladd.
The Blackhawks and the Stanley Cup in 2010.
Then why didn't he just let him walk?
The Hawks would be compensated a 1st round & 3rd round pick.
Instead, a possible NHL bust prospect and a 2nd rounder were aquired… I bet Stan heard the word ‘arbitration’ and shipped him off.
Bowman knows what he is doing
Cap management at this point in the offseason is an absolute bitch. Under the circumstances I give Bowman an A plus for his work so far. He’s also very smartly positioning this team to be an elite team for several years to come. The 2010-11 season might be somewhat problematic, but we got the Cup BEFORE the pain had to come.
Keep in mind Bowman also has to think about the day when Seabrook gets paid.
The Blackhawks and the Stanley Cup in 2010.
Stan the Genius
At best, we can say that Stan sat down at the table with two pair, aces and kings, and, here’s the genius part, he drew one card.
June 30, 2010. We will rue this day.
The cutoff is $3.091mm
My understanding is if it was for $3.090mm it would’ve been only a 2nd rounder. So getting a prospect in addition to that is a Good Thing™.
RFA’s don’t work like that. No one signs them to offer sheets; it takes too long and it’s too complicated. It’s much easier and simpler to ask the player’s agent what he’s looking for and then go to the team who owns them and offer up the appropriate package.
In this case, Atlanta gave the Hawks essentially a 1st round and 2nd round pick. Therefore, it doesn’t take a genius to recognize the offer they’ll give Ladd. I don’t understand the angst of how a 1st and a 3rd is better than what they got. Unless you’re hellbent on believing a tweet of some random internet guy.

Sure, they have Halak, but they also have cap space and would love to take down a rival off the ice b/c they sure in the hell cannot on the ice.

is not enough justification to make that kind of move. It’s just not good business sense, you don’t throw around millions just because you don’t like another team.

I wonder the same thing too
I can try to come up with an explanation but I really don’t know. I read the other day, I think on OtF, how Hamhuis was regarded as a good “union guy” who wouldn’t try to come down on his price just to play somewhere more favorably. In some ways you can think of it as fair pricing — if everybody ended up taking less money, you’d have a very strange market because players wouldn’t be priced based on ability but rather based on where they want to play.
Parity would be pretty much out because it’d be easier for teams like us to poach top quality players, who would demand a lot more to play in, say, Atlanta. It’s probably not the thinking, but I think the players themselves end up leaving it to their agents (and accept it as fact that they should in general play for the higher bidders) because it keeps things in the right order.
someone on the wings
got into a bit of trouble/controversy with the NHLPA because he encouraged his fellow teammates to sign for less to stay with a winner.
Hamhuis did actually accept a lower offer from Vancouver because he wanted to play in BC, though of course it wasn’t an obscenely low offer.
But when it was suggested to him that Toews v. Kane seems likely to become a sidebar to every future international hockey tournament, he smiled and said: "I'd like us to win something together, too." -- 2/28/10, so our Captain has said, and so it was done.

Yeah, it seems like there's a limit to the kind of discount you can take
I don’t know what if it’s just sort of an honor system but it keeps things more consistent, I guess. And with the cap you don’t get major salary inflation like you do in some sports.
uh, did you see how much money BOOGARD got? :P

I'm all for parity ...
and i’m glad there is a salary cap. But I don’t think having players take less to play where they want would have a huge distoring effect. I think having a place like Atlanta pay a premium for players because nobody there cares about hockey and players wanting to stay on the same team their whole career is the right order, and more in tune with traditional market principles. I realize the league is a monopoly and the union isn’t exactly steel workers 401, but I think wanting to stay on the same team for your whole career should be considered a good enough incentive to take … say … a 15% in your salary. Look at it like working a cozy government job with less pay and better benefits.
by Billy Charlesbois on Jul 2, 2010 12:43 AM CDT up reply actions
Oh, I agree
I think it’d be good for the league too — it’s easier to market guys who stick around and have an identity as belonging to a team.
Is it the NBA that somewhat recently created a rule that benefited players that stayed with teams?
The team that drafts them can pay them more ...
It’s not that much but it’s a little bonus for stickin around. Of course, players can get around it if they have their team sign them for that amount then trade them, which I understand to be fairly common.

And they need a lot of dental and medical care when they’re done! Some of the superstarts make a fortune beyond their salary with product promotions and what not, but Ladd’s definitely not one of those guys. At any time he can have a career-ending injury, and he’s got to be ready to take care of himself after that. I don’t blame the guys for following the paycheck. Hockey takes a lot out of a player, and he’s got his own future to think of.
and I'm sure his family
depends on him somewhat, as well as any children he’ll have in the future. Pretty much all of the guys we’ve lost will also have more playing time in their new locations. That has to count for a lot for them, too.

Like if Matt Cooke was cloned 30 times
and it was the 30th clone?
But when it was suggested to him that Toews v. Kane seems likely to become a sidebar to every future international hockey tournament, he smiled and said: "I'd like us to win something together, too." -- 2/28/10, so our Captain has said, and so it was done.

it's better than if 20 people
threatened to riot because of it. Silver lining!

Instead of sending him to Rockford ...
the Hawks are going to let him fight in the UFC.
I know there aren’t a lot of fight fans left in the hockey world, but I still long for the excitement when one teams toughest guy dropped the gloves with the their toughest guy. It was even better when it meant something and somebody was sticking up for something else. The problem was the Hawks always had the less tough tough guy. Probert had about one good year with the Hawks before the new round of goons came up. The Sandy McCarthys and the Tony Twists. Guys who couldn’t skate, had no hockey acumen whatsoever, and whose only job was to make guys like Probert uglier than he already was. Well, now the Hawks finally got their new era goon, it’s just 15 years too late because now nobody else has a goon. But the 15 year old me would have loved this deal.

Sporadic fights are enjoyable
but I like winning games, fighting majors dont help, even if you are the Chicago Blackhawks

They definitely don't help you win games
when I had season tickets as a kid we had a line of Mark Janssens, Ried Simpson, and some other schlomo (like dennis bonvie or ryan vandenbusse or something). All they did was fight. Every game. I remember Janssens had one assist for most of the season and I would joke around that I was right behind him in points total. Today’s game is a lot different. There aren’t enough enforcers on the other team for a line like that to go up against. You’d be the laughing stock of the league for wasting the icetime.
On the other hand, here’s hoping this kid can skate!

mostly agree
every once in a while, tho, a team is sleepwalking through a game, trailing 2-0. Sometimes a fight wakes the team up.
Not a real problem for the Hawks last year, but…

Goddamn it Bill!
I’m just saying that Dollar Bill was one of the salary cap’s biggest supporters coming out of the lockout. Good to know he can still fuck this team up from beyond the grave. Worst. Ghost. Ever.
"Erin go Braugh". What the fuck does that mean?
It's Irish for "you're fucked".
this is the first one
that hurts in a hockey sense
bye laddy. :(
[Tornado] sirens just went off...I grabbed another beer.
Somewhat comprehensive question.
In college sports, schools get in trouble when boosters supply funds or other accessories to players for them to go to their school. My question is, are there rules about professional sports boosters? Say, the sponsorship money the team receives from Bud Light to be a board logo, goes to Kane and he signs a minimum wage contract with the Hawks so he makes his 5 mil but is only a cap hit of 500k because the money is coming from somewhere else. Then the excess the Hawks make during the season gets paid back to Bud Light or is just kept for profit.
What I’m getting at is, since McD is such a marketer, why couldn’t the Hawks sign (say) Ladd to a slight increase, then work a deal with a sponsor to be the one to pay him the extra amount he wanted without becoming a sideshow that has to appear in everything.
Or, just have fucking Kanye front the billz.

because the cba doesn't allow it
there’s a specific part that says a player can’t receive that sort of money as part of his salary or something.
But when it was suggested to him that Toews v. Kane seems likely to become a sidebar to every future international hockey tournament, he smiled and said: "I'd like us to win something together, too." -- 2/28/10, so our Captain has said, and so it was done.

Sassone's article on Ladd trade
…Bowman said he would address the Huet situation shortly.
“I had a very brief conversation with his agent, but we haven’t gone down the path at all,” Bowman said. “I think we’ll get to that at some point here.”
What the hell does that mean?
"What doesn't kill us makes us stronger."
So for the salary cap....we dump Buff, ladd and Versteeg.....
We will replace with Skille, Dowell, and Bickell. Beach will be brought up sometime into the season. Also plug in Viktor Stalberg and Reasoner.
looking forward to next season jus to watch the up and comers…..lots of talent but they have alot to prove ,
"Trying is the first step towards failure" Homer Simpson
Yup...
I’m sure there will be several players picking up the slack over the course of the season and it will be up to Q and Bowman to decide if they are the right guys. People are freaking because part of the championship team is gone, but they aren’t losing any of their big guns or top players. It would be different if a Toews, Kane or Keith were moving on but they aren’t. We still have a solid offense and defense, we need to have a solid goalie in net, I’m hoping it’s Niemi, he’s solid enough.
team leaders
(e.g. Toews, Keith) will have more locker room/practice responsibility, and they’re just the guys to whip the kids into shape.
June 30, 2010. We will rue this day.
The fans freaking out is killing me
Yes, I’m sad to see our guys go, but we knew this was coming. And except for Ladd, I think most of us were expecting exactly the moves we got.
The gnashing of teeth is fine if that’s what you like to do, but don’t forget that the team on paper doesn’t mean shit once the season starts. The Red Wings were supposed to have done better than they did last year, but they were decimated by injuries. Montreal was supposed to be an easy opponent in the playoffs, but they found their grit and battled through two of the top teams.
We are going to have a bunch of young kids, and it’s up to our coaches and our core players to teach them, lead by example, and pull the best out of them. We’ve done it before, and I see no reason why we can’t do it again.
And really, if you can’t take this kind of uncertainty, why are you a sports fan in the first place? That’s half the joy, of never knowing what’s going to happen next. I’m not happy to see my boys leave, but I’m pretty excited to see what the new kids have, and I’m looking forward to an interesting season.
Core!
I know this is beating a dead horse but we have every reason to be happy we kept our core. Every time anyone complains about one of the guys we’ve traded away, I think you’d be hard pressed to get an answer if you ask who out our core we’d rather lose.
That said, we lost some depth. But that’s to be expected because what we had was obscene and unsustainable under today’s cap. So we aren’t too far off from SCUM’s boat. We’ll be more vulnerable to injuries, and will have to fight a lot harder to get anywhere near as far as we did last year. But what matters is we’re set to be a good team for a long time, and we’ll have a shot every year for the foreseeable future.
Exactly...
I hope things don’t turn out like they did for the SOX after ‘05 but one never knows what’s going to happen, that’s why they play the games. I’m looking forward to seeing what the “kids” can bring and also what the guys with that SC experience bring as far as leadership goes, and how much Toews and Kane progress after another year in the league. I think it will be both fun and frustrating at times, people will bitch a little and bring up the “what ifs”, but every team around the league is going through the same thing, except we are the champions!
Sox played really well in '06.
"....we have to find a way to win. And good teams do that."
Tomas Kopecky May 29, 2010
Brian Anderson
As long as the guys moving up from Rockford can outplay Brian – they are not the 05 Sox.
42 equals
the number of people complaining about doom-mongers
divided by
the number of doom-mongers.
I’m starting to find the numerator really annoying.
There’s a differnece between expressing distress over losing guys and doom-mongering.
