Report: Hawks to Match Sharks Offer on Hjalmarsson
So far it's just one beat reporter on Twitter - but Jahns is reliable and says the Hawks are going to be keeping Hammer. No word on any of the other moves they may be making just yet.

Also from Hawks twitter
GM Stan Bowman said not an either/or with Hammer and Niemi. Negotiations continue with Antti.
More from Stan: Described Hjalmarsson as a quiet leader who may get overshadowed by other d-men on team… Said he’s happy for him.

yeah, I really want to see how he swings Niemi's contract.
But when it was suggested to him that Toews v. Kane seems likely to become a sidebar to every future international hockey tournament, he smiled and said: "I'd like us to win something together, too." -- 2/28/10, so our Captain has said, and so it was done.

ahhhh, that'd make some sense
but we’d need a puck-moving defenseman for top 4 and who do we have? Hmm.
Rogers believes Sharp would be in play because he’s more moveable, but I’m really having a hard time believing that. He’s CHEAP. He’s the exact kind of contract we’d like for the Hawks; why try to get rid of it?
But when it was suggested to him that Toews v. Kane seems likely to become a sidebar to every future international hockey tournament, he smiled and said: "I'd like us to win something together, too." -- 2/28/10, so our Captain has said, and so it was done.

Dont want them

in complete agreement with you here
but at least that was just Rogers’ opinion as opposed to LeBrun’s “source”, so.

I'm not sure
but i think LeBruns source is Jesse Rogers…at least thats what he said on his twitter account….unless you read something somewhere else or saw something on tv etc
by Special Agent Dale Cooper on Jul 12, 2010 2:18 PM CDT up reply actions
verbatim, he said
With Hawks deciding to match Hjalmarsson offer, source said today Brian Campbell being shopped. Have hard time seeing that contract moved
and then:
My ESPNChicago colleague Jesse Rogers believes Patrick Sharp could be in play as well now and he’s much more easily moveable… We’ll see
Gotta be careful with what these guys say. The first seems to be attributed to a more “inside” source whereas the second is stating Jesse Rogers’ opinion. Could be two totally different things.

I don't know why he says stuff like that
bare minimum: still need 3 forwards, 1 Dman, and 2 goalies for a total of 5.6 million, and that would leave us zero space to bring an extra forward and/or Dman up.
Either Nemo’s gone, or they’re trading someone else.

“we don’t need to trade anyone else” comment after the Buff deal, I don’t trust Stano what he says that much anymore.

Unless Bolland’s back to 2nd line duties and Reasoner is in the third line, but we’d still have 1 winger missing. Skille? We haven’t signed him yet, have we?
Maybe he meant top 3 centers. Maybe they already know who’s coming up from Rockford/prospect camp.

Blackhawks blog The latest news from Hawks beat reporter Jesse Rogers. Blog
The Chicago Blackhawks will match the San Jose Sharks’ four-year, $14 million offer to defenseman Niklas Hjalmarrson.
The Hawks had until Friday to match the offer, or they would have received a first-round and third-round pick in next year’s draft.
Chicago general manager Stan Bowman had said key restricted free agents wouldn’t be leaving. Bowman has traded several members of the Stanley Cup champions as he battles salary cap constraints.
Goaltender Antti Niemi also is a restricted free agent. His arbitration date has been set for July 29. It was thought that the Hawks would wait until Hjalmarrson’s deal was set before dealing with Niemi.

Sharp means much more to this team than Nemo….they can go sign Turco or someone if Niemi decides to take off…..would like to see Niemi behind the Oilers D or the Blue Jackets D,his stats would be gar bage

Trade Campbell plus draft pick to Edmonton for Souray. Saves you 1.6 mill and you still get a puck-moving d-man. If Souray can stay healthy, mind you. Dunno if Oilers would like that extra salary though… might need to offer a good pick/prospect

Right & he shows his fans he's trying to improve the team
Still don’t know how Niittymaki is an upgrade. If he wanted to screw us why not put the offer sheet to Niemi?
I think it was a calculated move
He waited until after the deadline for filing for arbitration to see whether Niemi would take the Hawks to arbitration. If he hadn’t, it might have been Niemi getting the offer sheet. But at the same time, the Sharks ARE high on Nittymaki (as are other people outside the Sharks’ org) and their need IS in defense.

Our Salary Situation (reposted)
Kane(6.3mil) Toews (6.3mil) Brouwer (1.025mil)
Hossa (5.275) Sharp (3.9) Kopecky (1.2)
Stalberg (0.85, two-way) Bolland (3.375) ??
?? Reasoner (1.15) ??
Seabs (3.5) Keith (5.54)
Campbell (7.143) Hjammer (3.5)
Scott(0.512; if I’m reading CapGeek correctly, this a NOT two-way contract) ??
No Goalies.
$4.1mil Cap space taken up with bonuses.
This gives us 6 places to fill, not counting 7th Dman or 13th forward, with 53.67mil already on the books. If the Salary Cap is $59.4mil – which CapGeek tells me it is – that means we have an average of $0.955mil/player just to fill up the lines. If we, say, use Vishnevskiy & Dowell (I’m not including Skille and Bickell, as they’re RFAs) that means we have $4.383mil to sign 2 goalies and 2 forwards, not including 13th forward or 7th Dman.

Keith + Seabrook = half the game.
Hjarm + Campbell = 25 min.
Scott + some other bum = 5 min.
Not so bad. I’d be more concerned about the lack of depth on lines 3 and 4, and possibly 2 if you have to trade Sharp. Your 1st and 2nd lines will tired if they play too often, that could become more of a problem.
by Beantown Canuck on Jul 12, 2010 2:26 PM CDT up reply actions
You might be right
however, third line still has bolland….and Stalberg will most likely be joining him,as far as the fourth line, even last years fourth line wasn’t anything special…imo
by Special Agent Dale Cooper on Jul 12, 2010 2:28 PM CDT up reply actions
If you lose Sharp, I’m guessing Stalberg needs to be given a crack at line 2, no? And still, the loss of Steeger and Buff (and the reported possibiltiy of Sharp) among the top 3 seems to me to be a bigger problem than your defensive situation. Your defence looks mighty fine to me. Any other team would kill for your top 4.
by Beantown Canuck on Jul 12, 2010 2:36 PM CDT up reply actions
i would agree with this
If we lose anyone off the top two lines at any point (i’m including injury during the season in this statement, not just trade), Stalberg is the first person i expect to see in their place. Also, if we want/need to spread our offense out a bit more at any point, i could see putting Stalberg up on one of the top two lines and dropping someone else down to get the 3rd line going.

Horrible to me
would be $1million dollars in cap space for 2 4th liners and 2 goalies. As it is, Crawford is $800k, and if we’re paying our 4th liners more than $1 million each, i’m going to be pissed. That leaves Niemi, which it is starting to look like an arbitrator will decide for us.
by Katherine215 on Jul 12, 2010 2:27 PM CDT up reply actions
When you put it that way
then yes, your scenario is horrible…….but some of this might depend on who makes the team and how they develop(Kruger Stalberg etc)if those guys and lets say Beach pan out and make the team and play well, the Hawks will be in great position…but lkike you said before,it doesn’t seem like Beach will be coming up with that huge cap hit
by Special Agent Dale Cooper on Jul 12, 2010 2:31 PM CDT up reply actions
You really really really need to leave space for that 7th d and 13th f. Otherwise you literally cannot replace any player with a slight injury or illness or personal/family issues EVER throughout the season. Unless you want to put them on LTIR, which means they must miss at LEAST 10 games. That sounds like a very very very bad plan if you ask me.

But Campbell is older, has a larger contract, and in my opinion, more easily replaceable. I would certainly miss Campbell, though.

the entry level one and the one that makes them RFAs? Why is Hammer an RFA so much earlier? shorter contract terms?
by Katherine215 on Jul 12, 2010 2:59 PM CDT up reply actions
RFA status
is not based on when the entry level deal ends. They’re players who are no longer considered entry-level but don’t actually qualify for unrestricted free agency yet. This is qualified by combinations of the length of their NHL experience and their age.

it’s confusing me why Hammer is an RFA before Seabs. Not asking you to explain, I’ll Wiki it or something.
by Katherine215 on Jul 12, 2010 3:07 PM CDT up reply actions
they're both RFAs
I think when Seabs signed his extension (the contract he’s on right now, which came after his entry-level deal expired), he signed as an RFA. Because he still hasn’t reached the age limit (I think it’s 27), then he’s still an RFA when his current contract expires.
I’m not sure that makes much sense or if I explained it enough. Suffice to say you don’t automatically graduate to UFA status after just one RFA deal.
But when it was suggested to him that Toews v. Kane seems likely to become a sidebar to every future international hockey tournament, he smiled and said: "I'd like us to win something together, too." -- 2/28/10, so our Captain has said, and so it was done.

by Katherine215 on Jul 12, 2010 3:25 PM CDT up reply actions
I think
Age helps to determine how many years of professional service are required before becoming a restricted free agent the first time.
For example, since Niemi was 26, he only need one year of service to become an RFA (which for a goalie is 30 games on the active roster). If Niemi had turned 27 before June 30 of this year, he would have been a UFA.

I am not 100% sure but they had been on the team awhile so I think somehow it worked that way.
As for Seabs, I wonder what he is going to be asking for

In the NHL
is a certain number of years in the NHL before a player becomes an UFA?

Love Campbell, but if they can unload the contract they must
Not that they’ll be able to, just sayin’.
Are they concerned with Seab's concussions
Love the guy, but would that not play into their calculations for renewal time?
concussions? didn't he only have one?
But when it was suggested to him that Toews v. Kane seems likely to become a sidebar to every future international hockey tournament, he smiled and said: "I'd like us to win something together, too." -- 2/28/10, so our Captain has said, and so it was done.

Oh right
That first one was so bizarre I’d forgotten about it. How long was he gone for that?

I don't remember exactly
2-4 games, I think. He was out when Toews was, if my memory can be trusted.

I remember Toews missed 6 games then
but I feel like Seabs missed more. But he only missed 2 games after that Wisniewski hit.

Aha! He cam back
10/29 after last playing 10/21. He missed games on 10/24 and 10/26. So not too long. He must have a hard head.

Not sure
But as we’ve seen before, you have to be really careful regarding that type of injury. Once you’ve had one incident, another usually follows shortly afterward. Then it becomes a cascading kind of thing, with each subsequent injury becoming exponentially more serious for the long – term.
