Brian Johnson of AC/DC celebrates the Hawks Cup win.

I've seen a lot of teeth-gnashing over the losses of our Cup champs the past couple weeks, even though we all pretty much knew this was coming.  I've seen people giving up the ghost already on a Cup defense, pointing toward '11-'12 already.  Well, let's look at that.  With the current CBA, teams have to identify the core of players they will constantly shift around.  Let's look at the Hawks first:

Brouwer-Toews-Kane

Hossa-Sharp

Bolland

Keith-Seabrook

Hammer-Campbell

I throw Brouwer in there because I expect him to at least start the year on the top line.  But you can remove him if you want, that's cool.  So, our core is comprised of the Conn Smythe winner who will be a perennial Selke candidate and possibly Hart one too, a former Calder winner who's going to challenge for Art Ross trophies right quick, two of the best two-way forwards around who have both cracked the 35-goal plateau, one of the best 3rd line center in the game who is all of 24, a Norris trophy winner and his partner for life, a 23-year old d-man who's proven to be a rock and one of the better puck-rushing d-men around.  Wow, this team sucks already.  In seriousness, one aspect you rarely here discussed (which is shocking, really) is that aside from Sharp, Hossa, and Campbell, all these guys are going to get better (assuming we can get Kaner back into sobriety this year).  We know Toews will never shy from work, and we have no reasons to doubt Keith, Seabrook, or Hammer will.  Bolland will have to due to his back injury, and Kaner obviously worked his ass off last summer, but I have my doubts this one.  Then again, they'll have Tazer to answer to if they don't.

Let's compare our core to that of our competitors:

Star-divide

Scum:

Let's start in our division:

Zetterberg-Franzen-Holmstrom

Datsyuk-Hudler

Filppula-Helm-Abdelkader

Rafalski-Lidstrom

Kronwall-Stuart

I hesitantly put Holmstrom on here because he's pushing 40, as well as Brad Stuart but they're still important parts up there.  Anyway, you'll not find more strength down the middle than Datsyuk, Hank, and Filppula -- though Filppula was moved to wing toward the end of last year.  But wingers?  Franzen's obviously a beast, but past that we've been hearing loads about Helm and Abdelkader, and while I think Helm will be a pretty good pro one day, these aren't All-stars.  The top pairing is probably in its last year and was showing cracks last year (Lidstrom was bad against Phoenix and Rafalski was just this side of awful against San Jose).  Kronwall has been massively overrated his entire career, and Brad Stuart is just north of "a guy".  Depth?  If Bertuzzi and Eaves constitute your depth, that's not all that good.  Consider me unfrightened.

San Jose:

Marleau-Thornton-Heatley

Pavelski-Setoguchi-Clowe?

Boyle-Vlasic

Murray

Well, we know the story here.  Other than Pavelski and Marleau (who'll still bear the brunt of criticism), this top 6 won't show up when it matters.  There's no d-man here the quality of Keith, and the fact they went after Hammer lets you know what they think of their blue liners.  My man-crush on Pavelski is well known, but past that?  Getting older, Clowe is barely a top-6 forward, and Setoguchi at this point in his career is too easily taken out of a game.  Depth? Torrey Mitchell once had a bright future before injury and may again, Logan Couture and Jamie McGinn are nice young players, but can you honestly say this team is clearly better than us?

Vancouver:

Children of The Corn-Burrows

Kesler-Samuelsson (Raymond remains unsigned)

Hamhuis-Ehrhoff

Edler-Ballard

Luongo

This team has serious cap problems now and not even a conference final appearance to show for it.  Mason Raymond -- their unsung hero really -- is going to arbitration.  The Sedins got taken out of two playoffs by Dave Bolland.  Samuelsson's old.  Burrows...do I need to even say it?  Their blue line is suddenly deep, but it's deep with #3 d-men.  But remember, Dan Hamhuis has this.  Forward depth?  Don't have it yet, and don't have a lot of space to go get it.  Next.

Los Angeles:

Ah, the next challenge to the throne.

Brown-Kopitar-Smyth

Stoll-Williams-Simmonds

Doughty-Scuderi

Johnson-Greene

Bernier

Scary.  I include Bernier and not Quick here because the Kings have been waiting for him for years and are much higher on him than they are Quick, who they've tried to move for Simon Gagne in fact (which would be a problem for America if it happens).  Let's go ahead and throw Kovalchuk on this team, because it really has to happen.  Obviously, this team is a major problem.  While they don't have the strength down the middle that we or Scum or San Jose or Vancouver does, Kovy, Brown, and Simmonds marauding on the wings is not a pleasant thought.  This is the only team that can match the Hawks Top-4 d-mean that we've seen, and might even surpass it.  Depth?  They'll have it beyond this, they've got 16 million in space or so.  Frankly, I can't see what derails this team from a serious playoff run aside from another Quick playoff meltdown.  But that probably won't happen for two reasons:  1) He's not going to play 70 games again and 2) Bernier very well may take the playoff reigns anyway.

I feel mostly better now.  LA was going to be a problem if we'd kept everyone, and again after Kopitar, who I wouldn't take over Toews (but would over Jack Skille.  God that makes me sick) Stoll and Handzus aren't the match of Bolland and Sharp.  Name the last Cup winner who wasn't boss down the middle....you'll say Carolina, won't you?  I don't know, Staal and Brind'Amour is a pretty good start.

It's still going to come down to the Hawks getting contributions from rookies, but no team has sustained success without that.  We shall see, but I don't think it's as dark as everyone wants to believe.

Timely

Dude, you just made my day.

While I think I share the same sentiment as most Hawk fans, which is, we all knew this was coming and yeah shedding quality players we’ve grown to love hurts bad, but WE WON THE FREAKING STANLEY CUP. That little tidbit is the grape flavor added to my Flinstones Vitamins. It’s the little bit of salt licked off my hand and the sour squeeze of lemon washing down Tequila. It’s what a razor does to my wifes legs after a week of neglect.

I got it. We lost a bunch of quality players BUT WE WON THE STANLEY CUP. And oh yeah, we still have a kick ass core.

Color me ready for 2011. Great post Sam.

Just looking at that is promising

I wasn’t one to be all down about our team. I would like to know what the final product will look like come opening night (where we are raising a fucking banner) but that can wait. The kings have a solid squad and thought they are getting better, I’ll still argue that our top 4 is slightly better. They will be fun to watch as they remind me of the Hawks and if they get Kovy than watch out.

The nucks, scum, sharks are all going to be good as we have seen, but it’s about depth too and hopefully we see some of our young guns get the ball rolling. Look we went to the WCF in the first year with rookies and a ton of guys who had no experience and I see that nothing has changed. I’ll take my chances again this year.

i was just explaining to friends this weekend

about how i hate the beach. I hate sand, i hate running through sand b/c i suck at it, i hate the way sand burns my feet on a sunny day, i hate having to wear a swimsuit. the only thing I like about the beach is the water, and beach days i like the most are overcast ones.

give me an ice rink and a pair of skates over a hot, sunny day at the beach any day. Good thing i have zero aspirations of moving to SoCal.

I absolutely despise sand. It never goes away. I find it for days after, and I just can’t stand that. Give me a nice chlorinated pool any day of the week.

Not a sandy beach guy either

But I lived in SD and f’n miss it every day.

Awesome micro-breweries, weather so good you can wear shorts on New Year’s eve, ZERO fucking rush hour BS compared with Chicago, and nothing beats halibut fishing while getting shit-faced on a boat.

One thing I will say; women in Chicago are much better looking.

by Bluliner on Jul 13, 2010 3:32 PM CDT up reply actions

I lived in OC for 20 years

Never went too south of I8

The thing with SD is that most of the people, myself included, are not SD natives. And yes, the women are hot…but they’ve been MILF’d or are of the enviro-mental ilk. The ‘left-overs’ are nothing to brag about.

Rush hour anywhere in Chicago, near Chicago, or in a NW burb is generally fucked. I’d take SD’s traffic any day of the week compared to stop-n-go on the Kennedy you find on a Sunday afternoon.

1. Was she a Ducks fan or Kings? Or did you not get that far in your relationship?

2. Was she wearing a low-cut Pronger jersey?

3. Were you naked when the cops arrived? If so, were the cops immediately understanding or did it take them a little time to get to know you?

4. Did you have an erection when the cops arrived?

5. If not, did you achieve an erection once they came in?

6. Did she burn her bra while it was still on?

7. Would you date her again? Would you go steady?

Actually, it was meant to be humorous

I don’t like beaches myself, because I’m a beginner swimmer and don’t really find much fun about just lying on the sand. For swimming I prefer a pool because it’s a more stable/less chaotic environment. I’m more comfortable with not drowning in pools. For outdoors time I prefer running or hiking in the woods.

Lake St Clair

My mom is originally from Detroit, my grandfater tried out for the Wings waaaay back in the day. Was a big Wing fan (good thing THAT is not contained in the gene pool). Antway i went to visit when I was a kid and we went boating on Lake St. Clair, I was stupified thatr there was a pool RIGHT ON the beach. When I asked my Grandfater about it he told me the water was so bad that the had to build a pool there so people could swim as no one was allow in the water. needless to say I really didn’t want to even go on the boat.

Went to Colorado

went up into the mountains, was about 85 degrees out, drove along a river where people were white water rafting. Was a place you could park and go swimming. I said “Hey, lets stop” the Colorado native said sure, as I was just about to walk into the water, she started laughing. OMFG HOW COULD WATER BE THAT FREAKING COLD AND NOT BE SOLID???

I know the feeling of the cold water

My parents have a cabin on a lakefront in Southwest Ontario. The ice breaks in May and it starts to freeze again in October. When I was a kid I didn’t have a problem with the temperature of the water. If I went into the lake today, I’d have hypothermia in about 2 minutes.

The only time I ever enjoyed swimming in salt water was in the bioluminescence bay in Puerto Rico, and that’s because the experience trumped the whole “ugh salt water” thing.

Kings

the thought of how good the Kings might be this year has been getting larger and larger in the back of my head for the last month. i think they’re kind of flying under the radar right now, haven’t heard much said about them, don’t know why. I think you’re dead on here, they look scary now, and i think there’s a great chance they’ll look a little scarier by the time October gets here.

But yes, other than that, i think we won’t be as dominant next year but we should be able to keep up. and that’ll be GOOD b/c we shouldn’t have to put up with any long stretches of “entitlement Hawks” play like we did for a bit last year. it’ll keep them on their toes more, and that should be fun to watch.

I understand, but don’t agree with people who complain when players don’t give 100% for 82 games. You have to have some room to put in that extra effort when the going gets tough. I prefer a player who plays okay (but preferably consistently/reliably) but steps up in the playoffs to one who plays so hard in a meaningless game that he gets hurt.

Don't want to start the whole bandwagon thing again, but......

I think there will be a lot of, shall we call them “casual”, fans that came late to the party this year that will be thinking a repeat is expected and the only acceptable outcome for next season.
Obviously, knowledgeable sports fans know that repeating as champion in any sport is very difficult indeed. This segment of Hawk fandom (which I think includes the majority of SCHers) will be, I dare say, satisfied with a competitive team that makes the playoffs and represents well once there.

You never know “are we a good road team this year” or are we going to have any injuries. It’s how you overcome the adversity and I feel with Q behind the bench and the Captain and Alternates we have shown we can overcome it. Just bring on pre-season please

the thing with LA (and Lombardi), though

is that they won’t do anything to jeopardize the future contract negotiations of who they’ve identified as their core. Kovalchuk hasn’t signed anywhere because he’s as stubborn in his demands as Lombardi is in the price he’s willing to pay for a free agent scorer.

While I don't see Lombardi as making a Tallonesque Huet/Campbell deal

The fact they’ve walked away twice and come back to Kovy tells you they’re serious. Maybe it’s not 8 but I don’t see less than 6.5+, that’s stil more than 10% of the cap for years to come for a player who is still unproven come playoffs and/or when he’s not motivated

by 188810 on Jul 13, 2010 3:04 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm not sold on the concept of "unproven come playoffs"

before this year, who among the Hawks was proven commodity come playoffs, really? Everyone who win the Cup was at one point or unproven. Marian Hossa was a curse before this year. most of our roster proven in the playoffs based on what they did in the 2008-2009 playoffs. Making the WCF with such a young roster was unthinkable to most earlier in the season. They proved to me that they had the metal and balls to compete with anyone in the post season.

Id like to believe they answer to Toews, but I’m not really all that confident he drops the hammer. Especially on Kane.

Plus how is he supposed to deal with Kane when Kyle Beach is running wild?

But when it was suggested to him that Toews v. Kane seems likely to become a sidebar to every future international hockey tournament, he smiled and said: "I'd like us to win something together, too." -- 2/28/10, so our Captain has said, and so it was done.

I think a lot of the unease comes from the fact ...

there are still so many holes in the roster. It’s hard to feel at ease until you see some name plugged in there and convince yourself “Yeah, Ty Jones is ready to come up and have a good year.” I think I’ll feel a lot better when I can see the entire line-up and hear the flattering info sheets on all the prospects..

by Billy Charlesbois on Jul 13, 2010 2:56 PM CDT reply actions

I think we feel so much uneasy

because we were spoiled with such a deep roster last season. Having such a deep roster is an unrealistic expectation in an NHL with a hard cap. We don’t have any more “holes” in our roster than any of the other teams Sam identified above. The perceived holes are a result of the lack of holes we had last year.

We are closer than any team.

In the NHL there are about 5 teams that I think can give the Hawks a good run in the playoffs next season…..2 of them reside in the East..

The Bears won make the playoffs barring some kind of miracle.
The Cubs….hahahahahahahahahahahhahahahaha….

The Bulls are better but Boston and Miami will murder them come playoff time…..

The Sox are the only other team this city can be proud of but Bos-NYY-TB will probably be too much for them in a playoff series.

Thank God for the Chicago Blackhawks.

Miami?? They have 3 players on their team occupying what? 85% of their payroll. The rest of their team will be composed of the equivalent of Luther Head and Dickie Simpkins. In other words, nothing. They’ll have the same result as Cleveland did while LBJ was there.

Basketball is not hockey. You dont need all that depth in the NBA and those guys can run up the score and sit out the second half of most these games.

b/c there’s such a huge demographic difference between the northside and southside. while this isn’t true across the board, the north side is generally more affluent, the south side not as much — and the differences were historically reflected in the fanbases (exceptions: Hyde Park and Beverly on the southside, northwest neighborhoods like Humboldt Park, etc).

and I don’t know much about the other guys. Kostitsyn was suspended twice by his team wasn’t he? Lombardi doesn’t seem bad, but Halischuk doesn’t seem very impressive to me…

by ahnfire on Jul 13, 2010 3:56 PM CDT up reply actions

click here to collapse this book I just wrote

On Parent - he was drafted by Nashville in 2003, never really given a shot here and was traded for the Peter Forsberg poo-poo platter. Poile and Trotz really like his potential, and he’s cheap. He won’t be expected to do anything more than play 6D, and he’s fine for that. Jonathan Blum is NHL-ready this year. Blum’s AHL coach said he’s much better than Weber was at this point in his career, so our D is set.

On Kostitsyn - he’s immensely talented. YouTube some highlights if you want, but in terms of just raw skill, he’s probably the best forward on the team. He has work ethic issues, yeah, but at 550k those can be overlooked. With a one year deal, he has to work his ass off for us or he’ll likely not play in the NHL again. Its a win-win.

Lombardi – has Nashville Predators written all over him. One of the league’s fastest skaters, great on defense, and a 60 point scorer. He’ll anchor the top line until Colin Wilson is totally ready. Good signing.

Halischuk – AHLer, probably. No room in the inn.

Jonas Andersson – power play specialist; our 2nd rounder from 1999. 30 goal scorer in Sweden, brought over on the cheap for some goals.

Anyway, here’s how we look:
Hornqvist/Lombardi/Erat
Sullivan/Wilson/Dumont
Andersson/Legwand/Kostitsyn
Tootoo/Goc/O’Reilly
Spaling, Smithson, Geoffrion, Thuresson, Belak

Weber/Suter
Klein/Bouillon
Franson/Parent
Blum

I think its obvious our forwards have more ‘oomph’ than last year. Arnott took shifts off and got hurt. Lombardi’s just as productive, but faster and works harder. Kostitsyn has something to prove, as does Andersson.

That’s a nice way of describing him. Lofty shoes re point-amassing, no doubt, but Joe’s manhood come April and May has certainly looked very toddler-like.

Just so you know, though: this is the last time I officially admit my favor for him. From here on out he sucks shit, skates like a tyke, and is pure locker-room cancer.

Thanks Sam, for the rational thoughts. I agree that we’ll still be solid next year and that LA is pretty scary. The biggest issue when losing depth, as we’ve had to, is that injuries hit a lot harder when they occur. I still think the Hawks can be a top 4 seed, but they’ll need to stay healthy, especially during a playoff run. With a few guys (hossa, toews, campbell, bolland, ladd (in the playoffs)) missing time last year, we had no problems fighting through these injuries, hopefully we can avoid big injuries this year.

This article right here sums up exactly why I love you guys. The media is going banana-balls on everyone, and today on the radio saying that if we had to let Niemi go, there is “NO WAY WE COULD PUT OUR TRUST IN A ROOKIE GOALIE FOR NEXT SEASON.” Now I may not be that big of a Corey Crawford fan, and would much rather have Niemi in net, however; didn’t we do this exact same thing last season with Niemi? Rookie goalie, behind a stacked defense, which we still have. I forget how that turned out, oh wait now I remember, because I’m still hungover. Chicago Sports writers suck, and you guys prove it.

The Toronto Globe and Mail reports: The Stanley Cup is making its way from Winnipeg, where Jonathan Toews was honored, to British Columbia this week.

Beginning Wednesday, five Hawks and former Hawks — Brent Seabrook (Tsawwassen), Duncan Keith (Penticton), Andrew Ladd (Maple Ridge), Troy Brouwer (North Delta) and Colin Fraser (Surrey) — will be taking the cherished hardware to their hometowns.

And I lived in Gastown once. that part is fine. The part in the DTES close by is pretty bad though. Partly because we are trying this new thing of treating them like they are sick ( with a nreedle exchange shooting place. Only one in NA…responsible for over 300 OD’s and counting being saved.

The problem now is, they want us taxpayers to pay for them to live D/T…in some of NA’s most expensive real estate.

I may have to move to Vancouver

once our stay in nYc is worn over. I’d venture to guess that Americans that get their income from the U.S. don’t get taxed on income, right?

by aeroplane on Jul 13, 2010 10:39 PM CDT up reply actions

I wouldn’t know that…but Canada does like their taxes…I would assume they won’t make you double dip.

I know tourists can keep all the receipts and get back the value added taxes like the GST ( and now possibly HST ..sales taxes, general and harmonized province and Feds together )…and get the money back.

Sorry Katherine, the DTES is the downtown Eastside. Basically, more where the old original city was. Rife with drugs and crime ( but getting better )…and a healthy “street population” ( a long story for another day. Vancity has the big problem because its the only urban centre in the country where you can sleep outside without freezing in the winter…and gets a lot of the Easts’ problems )

As a result of all that and more, the homeless have a sense of entitlement in our fair city.

The system that is set up to help is overwhelmed by the number of homeless that migrate, and the above mentioned OD clinic tries to help, but is a hard sell to the law and order crowd that see it as supporting criminal activity.

Wow…sorry to go on and on. You didn’t need the long version. Its just as a long term resident of this beautiful city, I have watched it change…part of the problem with being a desired location I guess.

Most of us want to help people that need it, but get a little tired of being told “gimme more.”

Canada has a tax treaty with the USA. So you would pay taxes in one country or the other, depending on source of income and where you reside. He's a decent fighter

And more skilled then Eager. His cap hit is over a mil though so I doubt we’d be seeing him on the line-up this year unless we move some salary.

but how does a prospect in the minors who hasn’t had a sip- forget a cup- of coffee in the big leagues get a contract that’s 2x the minimum average?

by Billy Charlesbois on Jul 14, 2010 1:47 AM CDT up reply actions

Here you go Billy…I find this site pretty informative.

The main phrase is " If the player was drafted, his maximum salary is based on the year he was drafted [provided he signs with the team holding his rights]; otherwise, it is based on the limits applicable to the prior Entry Draft at the time he signs. "Salary" includes signing bonus and games played bonuses. No player signing an ELC may receive bonuses other than games played, Exhibit 5, and signing bonuses. Exhibit 5 bonuses are limited to $2.85 million and are explained below. Signing bonuses are limited to 30% of the total compensation [excluding Exhibit 5 bonuses] for players drafted in 2004 and prior, and 10% for players drafted in 2005 and later. Terms for draft picks from 2004 and prior are fully explained in Exhibit 16 of the CBA and are a carryover from the prior CBA."

Top picks usually get around that, and can max out their bonuses if they are good enough to play those 10 NHL games and have their entry level deal become a Standard Player Contract.

So, with Beach, without seeing his contract, it is probably safe to assume that at least some of that number would be bonuses.

you people?

LOL

You can’t afford him to play a whole season maybe. Unless he blows up and plays great.

You have those 10 games to decise.

And you can maybe delay some of his Cap to next year ( the bonus )…so if he does blow up an do well, there is some Cap flexibility.

It is late…what the hell am I still doing up…? damn bar hopping

by vancitydan on Jul 14, 2010 3:28 AM CDT up reply actions

we have more than 10 games. beach’s junior eligibility is over and he’s officially on his entry level contract. so he can play in the ahl or nhl and go back and forth without issue.

my guess is he starts in rockford and has to earn his way up.

by modnar on Jul 14, 2010 9:12 AM CDT up reply actions

If you look at the rules on ELC, the thing is, you can have him for however many games you want.

But if you play him 10 games this year in the NHL, he gets paid.

One year of the ELC eligibility goes too.

I don’t think I said anything about being in junior.

The whole thing has to do with your lousy Cap situation. If Kyle Beach plays 109 games next year in the NHL, his full 1.2 or whatever it is counts on the Cap.

by vancitydan on Jul 14, 2010 1:34 PM CDT up reply actions

I could care less about his "cap hit"

He’s either going to be a giant turd on the ice and make the team worse or he’s going to be a giant turd on the ice and make the team better. If he’s good enough to play in the NHL, he will play in the NHL.
My guess is that he is a good enough player, but will not amount to much more than Tuomo did, which is not that godawful bad.

a former Calder winner who’s going to challenge for Art Ross trophies right quick

I can’t say I agree. Kane is good but not that good. It will take off seasons from Crosby, Ovechkin, Backstrom, Malkin, Thornton, Stamkos and Tavares (I think) before that happens, among others.

So, our core is comprised of the Conn Smythe winner who will be a perennial Selke candidate and possibly Hart one too

Mighty tough to contend for the Hart when your linemate is challenging for the Ross ;)

I was thinking more of “Toews is quite good as well” but yeah, Hossa, Sharp, you have lots of good players but no super standouts.

By comparison Washington is deep up front yet you know there’s one standout, and that’s AO. (Backstrom’s Corsi suffers a lot without AO, AO has scored 50+ without Backstrom, so he’s not in the equation for me, at least with pure offense).

RIGHT NOW I don’t see it, sorry. I wasn’t talking about the future at all. My point on Stamkos is that he kind of already stands out at a younger age. If Kane and Stamkos develop at the same pace from here on out Stamkos will be putting up more points every season (it doesn’t help Kane that generally wings score less points than centers).

Since his rookie season, hockey analysts, bloggers, and Blackhawk homers alike were saying Patrick Kane is by far the best passer in the whole NHL

I have never heard this before. This was always Thornton, Savard, Crosby, Malkin, and I even heard Brad Richards. Never Kane, and I honestly kind of doubt any good hockey analyst I’d trust said Kane was the best passer in hockey, by far. Link?

Ed Olczyk

that's the solid analysis I was looking for

I didn’t say that because Olczyk said it, it’s gospel, but dude does watch a lot of hockey and knows the game. Numbers wise, Kane really doesn’t compare to the other 4 (5 if you include H. Sedin).

As far as difficulty of assists, it’d be tough for anyone to assess that many players, I’ve seen Kane make some ridiculous passes, so there’s definitely a bias in a blackhawk fan evaluating his game.

When the people voting for the Hart have their Come-to-Jesus moments and realize that hockey value is about increasing goal differential, rather than pure offensive stats, then Toews will be an annual nominee for MVP. Until that point, he’s not going to put up the counting stats that most of the beat-writers with ballots look for – he’s not that kind of player.

"Its less about quantity and more about QUALITY!"

If you’re going to make that argument, why point out that Kane leads the team in goals, assists and points, followed by pointing out Marian Hossa scoring at a 41 goal pace?

And if i may, its a whole lot easier to have 50 Goal scorers in the Eastern Conference than it is in the West, simply due to the higher quality D-Men and goalies in the West and a lack of stellar competition in The East.

Unquestionably true, but let me point something out -

Stamkos – 1st overall, 51 goals, pure goal scorer.
Kane – 1st overall, 31 goals, playmaker
Sidney Crosby – 1st overall, 51 goals, does everything offensively
Alex Ovechkin – 1st overall, 50 goals, power forward
Rick Nash – 1st overall, 33 goals in a down year; recent competitor for Richard, power forward
Ilya Kovalchuk – 1st overall, 41 goals, sniper.

It’s pretty fair to say that the goal scorers mentioned here were all identified very early as high-talent players. Of that group, Kane is the only one that doesn’t project as a potential 50 goal guy with his style; it’s as much setting guys up as it is scoring. Note also that while the EC is weaker defensively, because they have so many terrible teams, they get a disproportionate number of the #1 overall picks. It’s a double effect – ultra talented players drafted first overall combined with weaker competition makes a 50g guy much more likely.

Only YOU can prevent idiots from commenting!

I don’t have an issue with Toews for Hart—that’s not what I said. I don’t think Toews for Hart AND Kane for Ross work together at the same time.

I really didn’t think anyone would disagree on that last point.

you should probably have said that bit early on

added with the whole notion that most Hart winners also won the Art Ross trophy when they won. I’m not sure if many have been keeping track of that correlation (~EASTERN BIAS CONSPIRACY TIN FOIL HAT~) around these parts.

Or yes, they could have, but just felt contrary?

But when it was suggested to him that Toews v. Kane seems likely to become a sidebar to every future international hockey tournament, he smiled and said: "I'd like us to win something together, too." -- 2/28/10, so our Captain has said, and so it was done.

I don’t have anything to back me up, but I bet that in the East you see more power vs power with less onus on top offensive lines to be defensively solid (Richards line and Parise lines the only exceptions off the top of my head) while in the West you tend to see power vs checking and defensively solid lines all around, and more even TOI distribution.

I just noticed the "among others"

and no offense but besides Thornton all of the players pointed out are from the East. Even Thornton played 7 plus seasons with Boston.

As for Kane and scoring 40 and point per game, he’s 10 goals away from achieving that and he’s more than skilled enough to do it.

Maybe, just once, someone will call me 'Sir' without adding, 'You're making a scene."

Actually, it is “offense” ;) Easier to put up big numbers in the East, for various reasons. I’m not sure why/if that’s an issue.

And as for 40, point per game—Stamkos showed us he was more than capable in his rookie year. I think Kane can too, but look—SS is already a proven 50 goal guy and a year or so younger.

Kane’s good, but everything has to fall into place for him to contend for the Ross. Toews for Hart I can buy a lot more.

Haha "Offense" - I get it.

Anyway, I agree somewhat about Kane and the difficulty that he would have winning the Ross right now.
I hope the following makes sense, I think the numbers are bigger in the East because there are some very gifted scorers playing against more inferior teams.

This is an interesting point and one I agree with. It is a helluva lot easier for Kovalchuk and Ovechkin to score 50 goals against Andy Sutton and Wade Redden than it is or is going to be for Patrick Kane to win the Art Ross playing against Shea Weber, Ryan Suter, Drew Doughty, Jack Johnson, Erik Johnson, Nick Lidstrom, Brian Rafalski, etc. every night.

Its a much harder choice between Keith and Weber than Suter and Seabrook for me. Did you watch the Olympics? Suter was otherworldly. He’s like that every damn night in Nashville. He’s just so unnoticeable next to a 106mph shot and fists that make Red Wings’ brains bleed, literally.

If you take out Seebs play through the most of the regular season and part of the playoffs, I might agree. As far as I’m concerned, it’s a package deal.

Suter didn’t make the Finals, so that’s somewhat unfair.

I think we can agree that Weber makes Suter better and Keith makes Seabrook better; and breaking either pair up and swapping them around wouldn’t work as well.

not many on these boards underestimate the Preds. It’s a well coached team, they have a giant goalie who’s good and the team is disciplined.

Also can we please stop blaming the paper work

if the RFA mess from a year ago wouldn’t have happened the players would have signed qualifying offers. Those are 1 year deals so Barker, Versteeg, Eager, Brouwer, Aaron Johnson, and Colin Frasier would all have been free agents again this year. Sure most would have been RFAs again but I’m sure smart GMs would have tried to poach like the Sharks did with Hjammer. Also I believe most would have been arb. eligible. So either way the players would have been gone. I’m not saying its okay they messed up, but it didn’t lead to the cap problems of this summer.

but if each of them were overpaid by, say, $1m

that’s $6m right there we could use to sign new people/renegotiate contracts, no? We might’ve been able to keep Steeger or Ladd. Or not worry about our seeming inability to sign a full roster at this moment.

And what the Sharks did is relatively rare. And if they were all RFAs, we’d get draft picks if someone offer-sheeted them, at least. It may not have lead to the cap problems, but it certainly didn’t help.

by ahnfire on Jul 14, 2010 1:11 AM CDT up reply actions

that 6 mil would be for the season that just finished.

And while what the Sharks did is rare, so is the situation the Hawks would have been in, and I’m sure other teams would have offered Steeg/Brouwer about 3 mil each.

As for the picks we would have got back, Barker got us Leddy (2009 first), Ladd got Vishnevskiy (former 1st), Steeg got Stalberg (Toronto’s 5th ranked prospect) Paradis (former 1st) and DeDomenico, Byfuglien/Eager got Morin (2009 second), Hayes (2010 first), and Reasoner. Also along the way they added 3 2nd rounders in 2010 and a second in 2011. The point being its not like the walked for nothing and I’d rather have guys who are closer to playing for us and have a bit more track record than 2011 draft picks

As mentioned above

If the blackhawks could’ve saved 4 million off of last year’s cap, they’d have 4 million more for this year due to the bonus cushion cap carry-over from last year. So yes the RFA fiasco from last year has had a lasting effect and probably costed the Hawks a player or two. So I don’t see how you can say it wasn’t a big deal.

Also, the Hawks could’ve negotiated a longer deal with the players last year as RFAs. There is nothing to say they had to sign a 1 year qualifing offer last year.

GAH!

/double facepalm…I know various forms of this have been shared, but…He’s played half a season and playoffs in front of perhaps the best defensive core in the whole fuckin’ league, and oh, almost forgot, one of the best puck-possession teams in the league too. That has kinda helped.

Don’t get me wrong, Niemi deserves a raise. A $3 mil per year raise for being not-the-man-from-France!? A thousand times, no. But, with the mindset still out there of ‘goalies win championships’, Zito has that ultimate bargaining chip – “My client was your goalie-horse you rode to the Stanley Cup!” And, well…he’s an agent. He’s the guy whispering in Antti’s ear, “remember, it’s not show-friends, it’s show-business…file for arbitration, we’ll, uh, I mean, you’ll win.”

If the hawks lose to Niemi in arbitration and tell him no interest at that price.

Niemi then sees what other deals are available. Can the Hawks later make an offer if the others aren’t to Niemi’s liking?

On a related note

How many teams if any are still looking for a number one goalie? I assume Zito has to take into consideration the extent of interest among other teams in how he approaches his negotiations with the Hawks. If the hawks lose the arbitration and refuse to sign him he’s gotta be sure there are other teams that want to sign his client at more than what the Hawks were offering. Otherwise, winning the arbitration means nothing.

Kings comparison

What’s great about the kings situation(or scary, pending on your perspective) is that with Handzus and Williams finish their contracts at the perfect time, freeing up 7 million that they can use to lock up Doughty and Johnson next offseason. And considering that Doughty’s Cap hit is already about 3.5, he’s not going to require much of a raise, so you can allocate some of that money around to Simmonds and Johnson. And in two years Smyth’s underachieving 6 million a year ass comes of the books. Lombardi is the goods.

And you point out that the kings aren’t strong up the middle, well Brayden Schenn will be up soon, and by most accounts he’s one of the top prospects in the NHL, and just barely missed making the roster last year after camp. He’ll add some nice depth, and be a strong second line center for years to come.

You aptly point out that the hawks are still growing, so are the kings. They are young, quick, just the right amount of physical presence, and veteran leadership in Brown. Who like Toews, is a mad man on the ice and leads through his hard work on both ends of the rink. Toews has more offensive skill, and has a much higher potential, but Brown is not a bad option either.

If they don’t add kovy, which is a real option, then they can easily make a trade for a top two line forward with any number of blue-chip prospects in their system. And rumors today have them looking at Sharp.

All they need now is a competent coach.

Sam's got good stuff here. I would question a couple things though...

I think the Sharks will be tougher in the playoffs this year. I still think we have the better team, but they’re going to use this past year’s experience as a stepping stone. They’ll be harder to eliminate than Sam gives them credit for.

As for OUR core, I’m not ready to relax yet. I think Sharp is still in play in the trade market, and that scares me. The same with Campbell. As Sam pointed out all year, our team slows down considerably when Soup isn’t on the ice. Beyond the cap hit, Soup is a big part of our puck-possession/speed game and should be kept.

We’ve got the Conn Smyth winner, the Norris Trophy winner, the I’m-Hossa-and-you’re-not guy, and the drunken Cup-winning-goal scorer still on the team—-so we’re good. I’m nowhere near the ledge. But those guys DO need help around them too.

Don't see why the Flyers can't contend next year

Seriously, with so many of their star players either having off years during the regular season due to injury or outside pressures (but stepping it up in the playoffs), they could be a beast next year. Carcillo’s a massive tool and Leighton can be streaky, but I think they match up well with the other teams, particularly if their top line performs up to their potential.

First of all, I am honored by all the green, thank you

Flyers should contend with Pens and Caps for the EC. This year was wacky, regular season and playoffs.

Leighton was huge for them all year but he couldn’t step up in the final. Maybe he needs another year but it’s easier to take that risk on a young goalie big on talent than somebody with Leighton’s storyline.

Plus he gave up the worst Cup-winning goal since the time of Christ. That seems to have gotten lost among all the uncertainty and weirdness of the ending and celebration.

I just forced myself to watch the replay. It looks like his left leg was asleep. And the right side of his brain.

So they needed a goalie at the start of last year and they still do. Maybe it’s Leighton.

But what’s most important is that we helped Hamhuis with flier miles connecting in PHL from BNA-YVR, and that we can put out a line with Shelley and Carcillo. Every year I hope they cancel " Ed Snider’s That 70s Show" but it’s in eternal syndication in the Philadelphia market.

Belated/repeated congratulations to all, please enjoy your summer and it’s really not worth getting anxious about anything until March, ok?

by flyersfaninchicago on Jul 15, 2010 11:47 PM CDT up reply actions

Last goal was a little unfair...

The Hawks had a wide open skater (Boynton?) coming in free to Leighton’s left. Leighton saw this and didn’t think Kane would shoot at him since he had the post covered.

He anticipated a pass not a shot. I’m still thinking Kane shot low hoping for a rebound since he had a 2 on 1 in front of the net. It just went in in a fluke kinda way.

Sorry, but the Flyers defense was crap.

If Leighton had stayed on the post and Kane did pass to a skater with a wide open net, everyone would be complaining that Leighton was an idiot. He should have known the real danger was a pass…

by DaleHalas on Jul 16, 2010 11:04 AM CDT up reply actions

Don't see it the same way, not that it really matters

Ladd and Coburn were battling in front and it seemed to me that Powe and Gagne were in position to block a pass to Boynton, with Powe’s stick already on the ice.

Boynton did have a clear path to the net and Gagne was watching the puck. So I think the open man was an option on a low rebound, which I agree with you was Kane’s play.

As for Leighton, put yourself in his crouch at the time of the shot and I think you’ll see your weight and leg position are not favorable for a cross-ice move. His stick blade is his best friend at this point but he also started to put his stick shaft down flat when he knows the length of his blade would cover the angle if he’d actually had it on the ice.

Of course it’s happening very fast but that kind of play is supposed to be automatic for a goalie, even including the possibility of a cross-ice pass, which as I said it doesn’t look to me as though he was getting ready for.

I appreciate the guy and am happy he’s on the roster and hope he grows into a lockdown goalie, but his play and presence were different in the final than earlier (not that he was alone in this).

Enough from my armchair.

by flyersfaninchicago on Jul 16, 2010 2:11 PM CDT up reply actions

It ain't that easy...

Okay, I love the positivity of the article and all and I agree our core is still fantastic, however, I think the point we are skimming over is we probably won the Cup because of our depth just as much as our core. Our depth is gone. When it gets closer to the season Sam will have to do another article comparing depth of guys who are not considered the core. I don’t think we are gonna fare very well in that article. Time will tell. Yes, we all knew this was coming, but I’m not sure most people realized it was gonna hit at the level it might ending up hitting. I never, ever thought we would lose Ladd. I expected Buff, Steeger, Sopel, Burish or Eager (not necessarily both) and some others. But this is getting to be a bit too much, even for the great players we have left on this team. I know we will be good. I’ve seen plenty of “good” Hawks teams in my 43 years, but I’ve only seen one Cup winner. I want to see more of those and am not sold on us being “that” next season. I still have hope and maybe i will feel better about it when it gets closer to the season. I just wish people would stop telling me how good Kyle Beach is gonna be (if he’s not in jail) and our other young guys because no one knows. I also don’t want to hear how Buff, Steeger and Laddy didn’t mean that much, because I will tell you time and time again that they did. Even Sopel came up huge for this team and will be missed because of the dedication he showed in throwing his body instead of pucks every game. We will have to convince someone else to be that guy now. Keep up the good work on this site. It’s great.

An outsider's anlaysis, under the influence of three margaritas

The salary cap is like a new military technology that requires all nations to completely change not only their strategy but their theory of warfare. I think most teams are still responding poorly to the reality of the cap, making tactical maneuvers to save themselves in moments of crisis because their strategies and theories are still pre-cap and lack foresight.

If you are going to make a mistake it’s better to get rid of too many guys and free up space than too few. A team good enough to win the cup will almost certainly have serious cap issues so It’s better to assume that you cannot win two years in a row and make the moves you need for the next up-cycle, while still hoping that you can restore depth with your youth and with reclamation projects, and just pray hard that the chemistry will build over the course of a season. A little health, a little luck and the superior core of your team might get you back to the final anyway.

Ladd is the one that hurts the most, I think. But losing #4 (too drunk to spell) would really have been the worst, so Bowman wins I say.

I have no idea if this is true but once I got the first sentence down the rest had to fall in line.

I’m just trying to stop you nice people from worrying so much given that it’s July and you just won the Stanley Cup. Christ.

Haven't thought this all the way out yet

…but don’t know where else to put it, and it’s too short for a separate post. Would it be out of the question for the top two lines to be:

Brouwer-Toews-Sharp
Hossa-Bolland-Kane

I love DDN like everyone else, but I can see Kane flourishing on a line where the other two forwards are so responsible defensively. Brouwer can provide the net presence on the top line, Sharp gets to go back to his natural position, and Toews…well, he’s sorta good no matter who’s on a line with him.

What I don’t know is if that leaves the third and fourth lines in a complete shambles. Of course, we don’t even know who makes up the third and fourth lines yet. I like those top two lines a lot though. Or is someone going to tell me I need to stick to being a fan and leave the line shuffling to Q?

I'm not opposed to breaking up

DDN, but in the handful of times it was tried, Hossa and Kane didn’t play well together. One always had to be on his off wing and it took away the effectiveness of them both when they were together. But, maybe it will be different this coming year.

And really, with the lines Q throws out there, I don’t think it takes much more than being a fan to make them up!

agreed

if you break them up, Toews works much better with Hossa.

i like

Toews-Hossa, Sharp-Kane, however, when Toews-Kane are on they are really on and amazing. So i like the options we have with those players to mix it up

TWSS?

But when it was suggested to him that Toews v. Kane seems likely to become a sidebar to every future international hockey tournament, he smiled and said: "I'd like us to win something together, too." -- 2/28/10, so our Captain has said, and so it was done.

This little league season will never end

Up 15-3 in the bottom of the 6th (6 inning game), wound up winning 15-10. Poor kid, it was hard to watch

October cannot come soon enough.

Toews 100pts?

Holy Crap!

Your starters should also throw at least 130 pitches per game

…or else they’re just p-ssies. The Dustbag knows pitching – you say your arm hurts? Well then, go throw at the flagpole a few hundred times, you big Nancy – Boy.

Steroids? What are those? What?

I think they're both correct.

the Blind Horse line is actually the name of an album by Faces that come out a long, long time ago.

baseball coaching equals

killer tan.

Couple years behind me now, but I used to stroll into the office on Monday in the summer. Everybody’d be all “Whoa, dude, Where did YOU go?”

I’d hike up the trousers a bit and let ’em have it: “Oh- a little place called Lombard (or Mt. Prospect, or Lake in the Hills.”)
