Blackhawks Sign John Scott

Everyone that wanted a pugilist - are you happy (Especially you, Barry)?

The Hawks signed defensemen/left wing/brachiosaurus John Scott to a 1-year, $1 million dollar deal yesterday. I'm not sure what role Stan Bowman has envisioned for this aircraft carrier who clocks in at 6'8", 260 lbs, but it seems antithetical to his normally progressive hockey sensibilities to sign a guy who by all outward accounts has no discernable skill other than beating the fuck out of a poor sap in the wrong colored sweater. So congratulations everyone who wanted somebody to "protect" Kane, Toews, etc. You've gotten your wish - but I would have rather had someone who could, you know, actually contribute something.

EDIT: It turns out that the deal is actually for 2 years at 512K a year, as reflected by CapGeek. TSN's free agent tracker originally showed 1 year/$1 mildo, which is where I got the figure from. I actually feel slightly better about the deal now, though I still don't think the guy can play worth a damn. Even in the situation the Hawks are in, there's little risk in a league minimum, presumably two-way contract on a guy that big who can play either D or wing.

by cosmicblue on Jul 2, 2010 11:01 AM CDT up reply actions

he is 500K, I am assuming Ladd is after a contract at or north of 2.5 million which the Hawks couldn’t swing. Figure they have about 9.2 million with Huet off the books and they need to sign 10 Guys to have a 23 Man roster (they can carry as low as 20). I would assume Niemi and Hjalmarsson will run the Hawks around 5 Million (so 4.2 million left). That means 8 Guys with just over 4 million. Once you start bringing guys up assune Beach (1.17), Connelly (.875), Crawford (.800), Dowell (.525) = 3.37 Million. That means the Hawks have 835,280k left and only have 19 guys on the roster. I would assume we won’t see Beach up. Also, Skille and Bickell are UFA so assume Skille signs for his minimum which I believe is 1.3 Million. Bickell gets a 10% raise to .550 and they still need another Blue Liner. I also assume Skille gets resigned and stuck in Rockford. I would assume they offer Hendry 600k or 660k if he still gets his raise. I like Lebda but I don’t know what he will command and clearly Hawks don’t have much room. There is not way to afford Ladd.

P.S. I also have no idea what I am talking about but those are my thoughts.

by pnote on Jul 2, 2010 8:30 AM CDT up reply actions

UFAs can be signed for less

they don’t have the QA floors that RFAs have.
Skille was at an 850 salary (the rest was bonus money) and he might well be signed at a reasonable figure – to avoid being stuck in Rockford due to salary issues like last year

by krome on Jul 2, 2010 11:35 AM CDT via mobile up reply actions

they are RFAs

I knew that it was just a typo. Skille would take a minimum deal at least according to his sound bite from last year. Good call on the .850, I just saw that now that I opened his profile on Capgeek. He would still get his 5% though.

Pfffft

Yeah, Scott will be effective for a while, but what happens when the other teams figure out the “pitchforks and torches” strategy against him?

by the wolf on Jul 2, 2010 8:05 AM CDT reply actions

Confused

I thought the Hawks stance was big guys with skill. I guess if it cost them 500k then this is the type of thing I ought to expect this year. Ladd is the only move that hasn’t settled right. If it was truly a money thing then best of luck, he deserves it. Saw this coming since last year and I am really glad Sharp is still with the team.

No... That was my man-crush with this team.

Its a mere joyous coincedence that he was wearing the number that I’ve personally worn forever.

I loved the guy. He was straight blue-collar hockey. Grinding, drawing penalties, agitating the opposition. He was one of those guys that the opposing teams hated playing against, and he wore our sweater.

That guy came to work, did what was asked of him night in, and night out. He worked hard and was great with the fans.

He did all of that, for a very minor financial commitment, and I had hoped beyond all hope, that he’d resign with us.

I say congratulations to Adam Burish. The guy definitely earned every penny so far as I’m concerned, and I wish him great success in the future.

I just hope that he manages to prank the hell out of all of those Stars players. They’re definitely getting more than they bargained for.

I'm wondering about Washington

everyone knows they need an actual primo defenseman, as opposed to Green, who is a winger pretending to be a defenseman. But they haven’t made any moves, and the best D-men in the UFA have already been signed by other teams.

Will we see a repeat of their futility next year? Always a bridesmaid, those Caps (and Ovie). Hope they like stockpiling the ugly dresses.

Well, hopefully that's what jettisoning Ladd was for

Such a painful move had to have a purpose, no?

But I don’t like hearing that we’ll take a 1st and 3rd rounder. The draft is a crapshoot and we have a lot of picks already, so we’ll likely get a good number of the prospects we’d be targeting. Losing TOFTBO means we’re down to 3 D-men and given his enormous potential, I don’t think I would survive the day if he was gone.

by VerStig on Jul 2, 2010 8:52 AM CDT up reply actions

But those pics could turn into trade bait later on. Having a stockpile of picks is both good to cut down the crapshoot of the draft and to offer as incentive for teams to take a dinosaur off of our hands later on in the season.

I agree with this, completely.

Burish is actually a pretty decently skilled player (Don’t get me wrong, he’ll never challenge DDN for a scoring title). The guy was doing what the team asked him to do – play as a 4th line checking winger.

I wouldn’t be surprised (assuming he winds up playing on a higher line in Big D) to see Burish post up 30 points this season. Not at all.

I could see him putting up roughly 10 + 20 for 30.

they have about 9.2 million with Huet off the books. They are allowed to go 10% over the Cap in the offseason (but need to become compliant) which is about the same as Huets contract. Unless he retires or is claimed off waivers, or is traded, his Salary counts against the Cap, even if sent to the minors. The Hawks can not release him, but can buy him out, in which case the Hawks will be paying him for the next 4 years.

Alberts / Rome Scott / ?
Luongo / Schneider Niemi / Crawford

Fill in gaps. Bieksa won’t be around Vancouver much longer, for example. Vancouver is much stronger in net. Schneider may end up being a top notch goalie. I don’t think Vancouver is that much stronger than us, although our D has to have Hammer back.

Long time lurker

So if I understand all of these machinations correctly, because the team is now effed up (still) on the cap and possible offer sheets coming in for Jammer, Beach cannot be called up next season? We’re going to trot out schmucks like this guy instead? He makes Robideux look like Savvy out there. Silly me, here I thought we were going to give the young guys a chance. Your thoughts?

by Waylon on Jul 2, 2010 9:01 AM CDT reply actions

My thoughts...

Are that he’ll be our sixth/seventh defenseman, and he’ll be a big stay at home type d-man who will cover for Vishnovski (I’ll learn to spell his name by October). He’s a veteran who can work well with a young rookie who comes up is my thought. I’m not jumping yet, considering it’s only the second of July, but I’m standing on the bridge.

No, I have absolutely no clue what I would do if they meet in the finals!

For now

I have hi-jacked my own blog and have only been writing about the hawks since the playoffs started. Trying to find a lot of these old records on vinyl or cd is very challenging so until I can piece together all the material from ‘46 I won’t post about it. But you can read the posts about how I started the blog and my thoughts on 1945 and some of the books I have been reading…

Bill Laswell has great stuff

I have his remix/reworked/reconstructed Santana c.d. “Divine Light”. Awesome! It takes the music from Santana’s “Illumination” and “Love Devotion Surrender” and completely mixes it up in a way that made Carlos like it all over again. Also, if you want to get really OUT there with Coltrane, check out his “Interstellar Space” c.d.

It takes more than you think

There’s a reason why not everybody can do it, even if they’re big. You have to be competent enough to skate to the crease to set up shop and fight off the D without being useless as the other two forwards are trying to make plays.

Maybe on the PP, but do you seriously think this guy is going to play on one of the top two lines or the PP?

I get all the salary dumpage that had to take place. I understand that Little Bowman’s hand was forced with the Ladd offer sheet thing. I know you can’t bring back Madden and Burish because of the cap. But THIS is the first free agent you sign?

What’s the logic? Who makes up the brain trust that thought we needed this “talent?” I’m assuming that Big Bowman is in on these discussions as well as the scouting staff. Again, what is the point of bringing this guy in?

I think I’m going to spend my time watching the Hawks playoff games from this year. It’s getting a bit confusing/depressing/irritating/infuriating to watch the breaking news from the Hawks.

THIS is your first free agent signing? Ugh.

I'd like to throw out there that the supposition that someone had to be

“The worst Blackhawk” is amusing.

They are the Stanley Cup champions.

That team was ridiculously deep.

I’m willing to bet that we see Burish (pause to fight the tears) playing at least third line, and possibly second line minutes down in Dallas.

I get that we’re the Stanley Cup Champions, and they’re not, but when you try to cast Adam Burish, Colin Fraser, and Ben Eager in the position of “Worst player on your team.” I guarantee, you’ve got a good team.

Eager was actually a pretty good skater, and the implication that Burish has no speed (someone implied/said it earlier) is asinine.

I'm good with the Scott signing since it is apparently at around $500k and not $1M

He’s got some NHL experience, he’ll be on the 3rd d-line, and he was cheaper than most of the guys in Rockford. We did need some size – and Scott fills that entire need in one signing!

Let’s see, Sopel was making $2.3M and this guy will be making about 20% of that? Good signing IMO for a probable 6th-7th d-man.

Sad but true. Let’s just hope they don’t turn in to the Rangers, Tampa Bay, or Carolina.

Let’s shoot for NJ or that team from MI. They may not win the cup every year, but they win more than once every 10.

Some things cannot be helped. We were able to stockpile last years team due to years of stupidity and poor play. Now we have a smaller group of real good players that have to elevate the play of younger less skilled players.

This is my point. There wasn’t another cheap free agent out there with some speed and at least a bit more talent? I don’t care about the $500,000 thing—it’s the player we’re getting that I don’t understand. I don’t see how he fits in with a team that is all about speed and puck possession. At least Eager and Burish had some wheels. And Buff had soft hands. Steeger could puckhandle in a phone booth. And Scott can…what does he do again? And it helps our puck-possession speed game how?

I keep thinking back to the Bulls. When Pax retired, they got Kerr. When we needed a new big man after Perdue left they got (whoever it was). They kept the core intact (MJ, Pip, Grant followed by Rodman) while filling in the other positions and the second/third stringers.

I just don’t see how he’s gonna work.

I'm not willing to say he's done a great job just yet ...

I could have traded Versteeg, Buff, and Ladd, cracked open hockey prospectus, and gotten picks and prospects. Now, I also won’t hold that against him beause he’s basically the janitor left cleaning up the place after the three year party thrown by Tallon. Once he has a little room and a something to gain in the trades, rather than just something to lose (e.g. payroll), we can see how this guy is.

The particularly unhelpful comparison that article makes is to tampa bay with Lecavialer. Sure, he’s a salary cap nightmare, but more than that he’s a bust’s bust. He’s the Alexander Daigle of the 2000s. That guy is just a toxic asset to any G.M.

by Billy Charlesbois on Jul 2, 2010 3:20 PM CDT up reply actions

I was reading this nodding my head

until the Tallon part. I’ve been hard on Stan, but I thought this comment (below the article- from a Sharks fan) was pretty fair to both these guys, and it has softened my view of Stan’s efforts so far:

I think Bowman has done very well in all of his deals to trade for cap space and has gotten much better return than I expected. So far hes proven himself to be a more than capable General Manager in the short term and a smart hockey man. He will likely continue to be so. I don’t like how the article questions Dale Tallon’s abilities and suggests the team is mainly successful because Toews and Kane fell into his lap. I think Tallon’s complete body of work, drafting history and shrewed trades proves hes a guy who knows hockey better than most in the business. His biggest failings, the Campbell and Huet contracts have long been rumoured by hockey insiders to be interference deals ordered by team President John McDonough. Tallon’s actions in Florida will eventually show whether or not that is the case. But personally I think the firing of Tallon despite the fact he assembled the best team in hockey this year goes to show well enough there was definitely power struggles between executives in the front office.

Just read on NHL.com that the Hawks didn’t even tender offers to them. Granted they weren’t major players in the run, but they did offer a little depth. I guess Stan is planning to get the young guys a lot of ice time this year.

We’re still tight against the cap. My guess is until we resign Niemi & Hjammer, Stan wants to play it safe in case they come in more expensive than expected.

It all hinges on this. Everything I’ve read today seems to point toward Niemi being the holdup; after we know how much he costs (since he has the arbitration rights), Hjammer can be signed using what room we have left, and then we fill out the rest.

Unfortuantely for Niemi, Nabokov and Turco still remain unsigned driving his asking price way down.

Even Dan Ellis and Chris Mason took small contracts just to get a starting job because nobody is going to pay for goaltending anymore as Cam Ward is the only netminder that you could consider “elite” to actually make the SCF since the lockout.

If he has any kind of defensive skill, he’d be a nice piece on the third line with Bollie, but I’m clueless on whether or not this is the case.

I would think that if the Hawks had any interest, his rights would’ve been traded over during one of the 2 ATL trades.

But when it was suggested to him that Toews v. Kane seems likely to become a sidebar to every future international hockey tournament, he smiled and said: "I'd like us to win something together, too." -- 2/28/10, so our Captain has said, and so it was done.

Man, landing an acting gig feels really good right now. i seriously have been out of the artistic loop for a while. Wow, this feels awesome. Hey Stan! lets make this even better and pull a cheep 60point man out of your hat for our roster this coming October! It would be really cool of you id you did (see above. Afinogenov, Maxim.)

oooo, i don't know

i remember him either not playing well near the end of the reg season or just completely mia because his old bones are made of glass. but he is a player who sees the ice and can anticipate plays pretty well.

but hey, its another fine suggestion. i just feel with Scott now lumbering around, we really need to re-emphasize that our fill-in members reflect the attributes of our “Core”. fast and talented (with the added benefit of being relatively cheep). What is Guerin’s cap hit? is he even a UFA? The people want to know, hawks61 (mainly because i don’t want to look it up myself)

Something tells me that at the end of next week (or sooner) he’ll take a one-year deal at $2.25 million/year or lower. A contract relatively similar to what John Madden signed to come here this past season.

Yah, his age may deter some but his experience and attitude in the room would make him a welcomed addition to this team. Anything that I’ve ever heard from Guerin recently is that he’s a great teammate and that is just as important, if not more important, as to what you can bring to a team – just as Ilya Kovalchuk who still remains unsigned.

A winner of 2 Stanley Cups (’95 Devils and 2009 Penguins) he brings that experience that has left with the losses of Ladd and Madden. Not to mention both of those wins came against the Red Wings.

I still feel he has a lot left in the tank and may be spurned a little by the Penguins unwilling to re-sign him thinking that Pascal Dupius can fill his spot on Crosby’s line (good luck with that Pittsburgh, but hey you got a good defence which wasn’t why you lost in the first place or is it you’ve finally realized that McFleury is no better than Theodore or Leighton?).

good points you have

but i just don’t know if signing a seasoned vet to the tune of what we gave Madden (2+ million for 1 year for a 3rd/4th line center) is in the stars for this team, especially with the cap. but, i am going to go on record and say that i have ab solutely no idea how the cap works or even what the actual numbers are which is a nother reason why Stan is the #s smart GM and I am just a passionate fan.
all in all, anything can happen. its going to be a LONG summer before October.

I'd merely like to point out that every returning member of the Chicago Blackhawks

has already achieved half of the number of Stanley Cups that Guerin has himself achieved, and they are all considerably younger.

While I like Guerin mostly as a player (I recall some years that I merely thought he was a big crybaby), he will not sign for anything that can be considered “cap-friendly” and we have to get Hjammer taken care of above all else, before we sign any other FAs.

I honestly don’t expect any FA signings of any note whatsoever, as every single one will mean that another deal has to be made.

We just don’t have the money, and after the events that took place in Philadelphia last month, I don’t know that anyone else’s experience matters anymore. We’ve got plenty of our own.

We are the Stanley Cup Champions!

Both are “supposed to be” great at neutralizing the opposition’s top players but all they do is get turnstiled all the time as highlighted by this goal by Toews on Hamhuis and Kane’s epic goal to win the Cup (look who falls for the NBA cross-over head fake – Timonen)

meh...

I take the Don Cherry school of thought on this guy = this Russian doesn’t play good hockey. Skilled? Yes…very much so. But he’s a defensive liability and he takes a lot of games and shifts off.

If he was 23 or 25…sure. A training camp and a season w/coach Q would do wonders for his game. But at 30, he’s a bit past the ‘coachable’ stage of his life and what you see is what you’ll get. Very hard to teach old dogs new tricks…especially when their old tricks got them success in the NHL.

Unless you really want someone on the Hawks to get your blood pressure up (since VERSTEEG! and Buff are gone), I would pass on that guy.

by Bluliner on Jul 3, 2010 12:51 AM CDT up reply actions

I was talking about Afinogenov

Kovalchuk would get scalped by the Chicago coaching staff…guys like and Carlyle would eat him before the ink is dry on the contract.

by Bluliner on Jul 3, 2010 12:55 AM CDT up reply actions

With what

we have lost and what we have or haven’t gained so far, I would take him and his 61 points for one year. I have seen him play a number of times and IMO he doesn’t take off any more shifts than any other player in the league. Sure he is 30 and set in his ways, but the man can score. We bring him in for a year at a good cap number to alleviate some of the offense that was lost, and it takes some pressure off the core players to pull that weight. And then we send him on his way after the season when guys like Beach, Bickell, possibly Morin are ready to step up and play the roles they were drafted for. Certainly it has its draw backs, but of the FA left, there isn’t a whole lot of help out there. But then again none of this is going to happen anyway, like I said, its just wishful thinking.

There’s no way he takes what we’re able to afford, and the kind of money that he’s asking could be used to sign lots of guys like Afinogenov – who I like much better – but also don’t think we can afford.

It would be cool if

he went back to the Greek spelling of his name: Tselios…just to screw with people.

He should wait until he goes into the HOF and change it right before.

Kris Versteeg

For those who haven’t seen or heard anything of the man VERSTEEG! there are some cool vids courtesy of TSN.ca of Versteeg’s day with the chalice. Enjoy.

2010 STANLEY CUP CHAMPIONS
It's been a long journey but in the end it was all worth it, and I wouldn't have ever changed a thing. The feeling is so surreal, yet so real.

I think that is incorrect

Hawks were #1 most of the year

I would tend to agree

Especially given how they ended the season.

I think

this is good news regarding Nemo, at least for the upcoming year, right?

However, whenever I hear “arbitration” and associated negotiating negativity, I always think of Greg Maddux and Larry Fucking Himes.

look at that!

I thought he was going to be signed by the Sharks. Huh…I guess BLou was wrong then.

Bob Probert

….a man among boys when fighting was a part of the game. Today, sadly fights are side shows for the paying customers. To look back on our season and watch the blantant head hunter shots including the near miss on Toews, one wonders if a ‘enforcer’ is still needed. I guess the management of the Stanley Cup winners thought so—-welcome John Scott.
I would hope either the Wings or the Hawk would retire his jersey. He is the measuring stick for all tough guys.

Sharks series torrents

Does anyone know where I can get torrents for the Hawks/Sharks WCF games?

I’m still working on understanding the C&B scoring chances and I would like to look at those games too.
