Summer Smoke
While it's still slow around these parts, some of the dominoes of the free agency/hot stove period have begun to fall...or not. But here are some thoughts floating around on this gooch-sweat inducing Wednesday morning:
- In the wake of Ilya Kovalchuk signing with the Devils for a fucktarded 17 years, $102 million, the Flyers promptly traded their longest tenured player, the perpetually injured fan-favorite Simon Gagne to the Lightning for Matt Walker and a 2011 4th rounder. Seems like a very light price to pay for a talent such as Gagne, giving the 'Ning a pretty impressive forward corps, as well as some expiring paper at the end of the year. As for the Flyers, it seems like they could have gotten more, particularly from the Kings who seemed like ideal trade partners given that they had just lost out on the Kovy derby....
- ...or have they? Late last night, the league rejected Kovalchuk's mega deal with the Devils on the grounds that it circumvents the cap, as the league feels Kovalchuk has no intention on fulfilling the entirety of the deal. While I can certainly understand where the league is coming from, it's curious that it's now where they start rejecting these deals as a matter of making an example, when they could have just as easily done so with the DiPietro, Zetterberg, Hossa, Pronger, or Savard deals. Though, as Killion and I discussed last night, a Lou vs. Bettman scrap in the octagon (which, lets be honest, is invariably where this is headed), is something a lot of people, ourselves included, would pay good money to see. Here's hoping it plays out that way.
- Stan Bowman came out and said that Patrick Sharp is going nowhere, which is a very good thing, in my opinion, obviously. But there is always the chance that this could fall under the heading of "famous last words" because we haven't seen the results of the Niemi arbitration yet. In the same breath, Bowman also said the Hawks "don't have a solution" to the cap woes, which worsened after having to match an offer sheet extended to Niklas Hjalmarsson by that treacherous twat in San Jose Doug Wilson. Steve Rosenbloom, whom I believe to have the best hockey mind of anyone working for a paper in this town (a title which carries a big asterisk), thinks a) Bowman is looking floundering and lost in the situation, and b) would rather have Niemi over Sharp if it comes to a Sophie's Choice type situation.
We've all made our stance on this pretty clear on this in the past weeks, so I don't think I need to go into the reasons why that opinion is off-base to me, but it's just surprising to me that such short-sightedness came out of Rosenbloom, though I know the majority of you party people can't stand him. - In that same piece, Bowman mentioned the Hawks are close to terms with Bryan Bickell and Jordan Hendry.
- Also speaking of Sharp, my sister and The Professor waited in line at the Best Buy on North Ave late Monday night on my behalf (unbeknownst to me) to obtain the newly released championship DVD/Blu-Ray signed by Patrick Sharp himself, which was a truly thoughtful gesture. And if the ladies/closeted dudes were wondering, both reports came back that pictures and TV do him zero justice. The content of the film itself is done quite well, and is very Sharp and Burish interview intensive, but with a fair amount from Coach Q as well.
Highlights include:
- Dave Bolland's hair
- Colin Fraser's hair
- A full segment dedicated to Dave Bolland being "The Rat" during the WCF portion.
- During the locker room bonus footage, Patrick Sharp yelling at Toews (or somebody) "Hey! You know what Soupy said to me once we knew the puck went in? He said we'll never have to pay for a drink in Chicago again!"
- In that same batch of footage, a shirtless Patrick Kane and Kris Versteeg recruit a shirtless John Madden to take a picture with them holding the up the Cup
- John Madden's locker room dance party - Lastly, once this Niemi nonsense is sorted out and the Hawks finally are able to finish out the roster, we WILL get you fine people a podcast to stuff into your ears.

The more I look at the Kovy deal
the more convinced I am that the league killed it primarily because of this: the last 6 years come in at just $550,000, only 10% above the current league minimum.
I don’t care how the next CBA shakes out, anybody who believes the minimum will still be at or below $550k in 2025 has got to be high, stupid or both. And once you acknowledge that fact, it’s obvious that the contract’s final years will be incapable of performance, regardless of whether Kovy intends to keep playing or not.
The other long-term deals discussed in comparison all have salary levels in the final years which have a much more likely chance of at least being technically capable of fulfillment.
Our Cup.
But
the league’s min wage gets re-evaluated every few years, right? Is it not at least hypothetically possible that someone could get signed to $500k/year for a few years, and then the min wage gets lifted before the deal is up? What happens in that case? I would think it’d be fine, but I can also kind of understand why it wouldn’t.
I would imagine
that such a contract would be “grandfathered” into the higher minimum wage. The key in your example is the short term of the contract, IMO. I have to agree with 334, no reasonable GM could think that the minimum wage in 2025 with be at or below $550k.
"Every player should be accorded the privilege of at least one season with the Chicago Cubs. That's baseball as it should be played - in God's own sunshine. And that's really living." -- Alvin Dark
BTW, found this on the NHL site, FWIW:
MINIMUM PLAYER SALARY
What is the new minimum NHL player salary?
The minimum NHL player salary in 2005-06 and 2006-07 will be $450,000; $475,000 in 2007-08 and 2008-09; $500,000 in 2009-10 and 2010-11, and $525,000 in 2011-12 (to the extent the CBA is extended by the Union).
What happens with players who have contracts for 2005-06 for less than the minimum salary?
The player’s contract may be bought out. If the contract is not bought out, his salary must be increased to the League minimum.
Our Cup.
Isn't there a certain amount of self-regulation with this kind of deal?
I largely avoid the salary cap issues because it’s so far away from sport and I prefer to get my numbers geek happiness elsewhere, but isn’t it true that these kinds of deal will only be in place for the mega-stars?
In 2026 the Devils are still taking a cap hit of $6M, right? (If that is not true then everything else I’m saying here is (more of) a waste of your time.
Presumably Kovalchuk is not playing at 43. The Devils are still putting his salary on the books. Even with inflation, you have an incentive to not do this for too many players or you may find yourself putting out an Old-Timers roster because your cap space is used up from deals drawn up ten years prior.
This would be another way of making it easier to keep guys like Toews and RIchards and Crosby in one place forever without having to come up with yet another piece of legislation to try to understand.
If you don’t think teams can be trusted to budget for their futures or if you don’t want special treatment for the uber-stars then ok, this is a dumb idea. But otherwise it’s a way to let market forces dictate what happens, allows for more freedom and the attendant responsibility, and acknowledges that the best players get compensated in a way that is special.
Ok now I’m starting to sound like a John Galt speech. Maybe that’s the problem. Salary cap is meant as an equalizer and this can be seen as a way for deeper-pocket franchises to go more in the red in the real books even if they are within limits in the salary cap books.
Apologies in advance if I’m completely misunderstanding the way the cap works.

BTW
Read somewhere that this deal was the owner’s idea and that Lamoriello knew it wouldn’t go through, and that in fact he’s good buddies with Bettman and they did this as a way for the league to gain leverage on this issue for the next CBA. Not sure how this works but who cares if it makes sense, it’s a conspiracy theory and so it’s worth repeating as often as possible.
Also, others questioned why Gagne ended up in Tampa. He had a NTC and waived it but apparently with some conditions. L.A. was out because of all the travel. Detroit was interested but he wanted to go somewhere that had enough cap room to sign him after next season, when he becomes a UFA. Didn’t want to move a second time.

from what i heard on Gagne
they just asked him again, and again, about the same team until he got the hint and agreed to waive the NTC. i could be really wrong though.

that makes sense too
what matters most is that we got a #7-8 defenseman out of it. I figured at most Gagne would get us a #12 defenseman so this is a steal for Holmgren. Perhaps Laviolette is going to go to a 2-2-1 formation with Pronger playing 60 minutes as the sweeper.

Agreed
And I think Stan is thinking the same thing. At least I hope so.
Surely Nemo’s agent realizes his client could actually lose by winning the arbitration. They have a pretty big incentive to get a deal done prior to the arbitration- at least if he wants to stay in the NHL vs going to Europe.
by DunstontoSandbergtoGrace on Jul 21, 2010 12:40 PM CDT up reply actions
Totally, dead nuts on !!
That’s why Nemo’s agent wants to strike a deal before next Thursday. They both know the goalie market is slow and they won’t have a plan-B if the Arb favours the Blackhawks.
They should be dancing the big dance on a 1-yr deal knowing Nemo would be an UFA next July !!!
And like you infer, “shit or get off the fucking pot”.

Agreed
I may like Niemi, but trading Sharp to keep him is ludicrous. Sharp had the quietest 11 goal playoffs I ever saw this past year and does way too much for this team on and off the ice to trade him for Niemi.
I think it’s unanimous here.
But Bolland???
Why are they talking Sharp instead of Bolland? Given the 2 Ida put losing Bolland for Niemi vs Sharp for Niemi if they decide to keep Niemi.
Bolland
Is coach Q’s security blanket.
Trading sharp to keep niemi is lunacy.

Keep Bolland
Productive scorer, tough defense, great on the PK. He’s like Toews Lite. Worth keeping just to watch him get under Thornton’s skin.
WWTD?
i really like bolly
I DVRd the Championship Journey when Comcast replayed most of the games recently and I’ve been slowly working my way through them since last week – I was paying attention at Bolland specifically cause I was curious to see how he got under the skin of Jumbo Joe and Sedin and I was really impressed.
He is so versatile and quite good defensively for a guy who is pretty small. He was taking some big hits in the San Jose series from much bigger guys. I can’t wait to see how he fares next season after his full recovery from surgery (keeping fingers crossed). Hopefully we’ll see more of the Bolland we saw throughout the playoffs.
But he is awful in front of the camera. They had him in the studio with Chris Boden providing the insider view during breaks and he just looked so awkward… almost made me squirm in my seat

I also re-watched several of the games
focusing on Bolly and was very impressed.
I'm a Bolland fan for life
after his interaction with my son during his DVD signing Tuesday.
There are all these strict signs everywhere: no personalized autographs, no posed pictures, no signing anything but the DVD. You walk up and “handlers” are all over, moving you in and out in about 2 seconds flat. Keep ’em moving — you get the idea.
Anyway, when we first got in line my 4-year-old son says: “I can’t wait to show Dave Bolland my new Lego Humungousaur!” (a Ben 10 alien, for those not in the know). I laughed and said: “Good luck with that.” Sure enough — as soon we we reached the front, he proudly set it down on the table and began telling Bolland all about the intricacies of Ben 10’s alien transformations. I was mortified until I saw everyone laughing, and Bolland carrying on a serious conversation with him: “What’s this guy’s name? What does he do? Well, I might have to go out and get one for myself!” Then he stopped to take a picture with him. I was incredibly appreciative that he took the time to humor an excited kid. A class act on and off the ice, that guy.

Thanks for noticing!
I’ve been “lurking” for quite a while, but finally mustered enough gumption to post. I figured I had something worthwhile to say.
I’ve been a Hawks fan longer than most of the current players have been alive (Orville Tessier, anyone??). There were no blogs back in those days, no “cyber communities” to connect with fellow fans. The only other hockey fans I knew in Chicago were transplated from other cities (read: Detroit, Toronto), and brought their team affiliations with them (grrr). You know it’s bad when your arguments degenerate into: “Well, at least our uniforms are better than yours!”
Anyway, after the loneliness and frustration of the dark days, it took A LOT to bring me back. Blogs like this really helped me reconnect — it’s so refreshing to know there are other people out there who actually care about YOUR team as much as you do.
I don’t know how many people will stick around if/when the hard times hit again, but at least we have each other, right??

Someone needs to do

chicago media is the king of flip-flopping. i love this article which chronicles mariotti’s flip-flopping on the 2005 sox.

That's awesome
It’s like reading the diary of someone who refuses to take medication for their blatant bipolar disorder.
in 2005 i was in the habit of watching the espn show “around the horn” i the afternoons and mariotti was always on it. and there it went day to day on his opinion of the sox. after they lost game 1 to the angels they were done, after they won the drop 3rd strike game they were lucky, after they 4 straight complete games they couldn’t be beat. and so on and so on. when i found this blogpost it brought it all together and just captures that he really had no idea what he was talking about.

Why do we talk about Niemi opinions before he won the job?
Seems if someone said they weren’t confident in Niemi while he was a backup, that now they are hypocrites for liking him to stay. And statements that most commentors liked Luongo and Nabakov more BEFORE those series ended mean Niemi didn’t do well?
Given new facts and stats you change your mind. Nothing wrong with that.

Exectly
with Sharp, there is a track record of success. There is no proof that Niemi isn’t a one year wonder/result of the best defense in the NHL. It would be nice to keep Niemi because we know that we are getting a goalie that has a good head on his shoulders and can succeed under pressure (something we can’t be sure of with Crawford or Toivunen). If Niemi proved anything this year, it’s that a mediocre goalie can succeed with the Hawks defense in front of him.

I check that blog all the time. I love the way he treats the Hawks as equals with the Bears and Cubs and always gives us good coverage. His stuff on the Bears Management is fantastic. David Haugh tries to be critical but just ends up sounding like a whiny douchebag. Rosenblog tells it like it is.

i agree. i knew they’d get bickell but hendry becoming a ufa scared me some. i know he’s not overly loved here but he had a very solid 07-08 and fought injuries and other players moving above him. i think he’ll be solid as a 5-6 defenseman killing some penalties.
this is an interesting comment
I was wondering who the 4th PKer would be now that Sopel is gone. Who will be Hjammer’s PK partner? Campbell? Hendry? Mystery 5/6 Dman?
by Katherine215 on Jul 21, 2010 12:19 PM CDT up reply actions
i always had hendry penciled in in my head unless they signed boynton to the minimum.
personally i see scott as being the 7th d/13th forward on the roster. the 6th will either be boynton for the minimum or one of the kids (lalonde, connelly, etc). i would imagine if it were a kid that they would want to ease them into it and not get any added responsibilities right of the bat (no pp, no pk). so that left me with marlboro 72 and hammer/hendry.
Sorry I was working on some stuff….I took it from McClure’s post.

I've debated this with myself
(I really do like to talk to myself, BigC), but I’m uncertain that the same Hendry who got benched in the SCF games is the one I want killing penalties. Soupy went out before Hendry if one of the others was in the box, but I don’t know if that’s the answer either.

We have to make do
Giving a young player like Hendry an opportunity to develop by giving him a bigger responsibility is hardly the end of the world…

I was just verbalizing (in writing) my internal thought process. :)
by Katherine215 on Jul 21, 2010 1:31 PM CDT up reply actions
I think we've also been spoiled though
especially since Jelly came up so young but ahead of the curve. Not every D that we bring up is going to be a top4 prospect (although that’d be nice…) but Hendry will be a solid 5-6D and hopefully not be a liability. And we resigned him without giving him a raise, which was nice.

Hang on
I just read on PuckDaddy that at one point (1995-ish) the Devils were close to moving to Nashville. This can’t be right, can it? Anyone recall those days? I wasn’t into hockey back then.
I've read this before as well
I think they won the Cup right after that and the talks of moving died down
by hawkswin!hawkswin! on Jul 21, 2010 6:08 PM CDT up reply actions
It's true
The Devils were trying to get a new arena or a better lease in NJ and Nashville offered a sweet deal to move there. I hate these teams that threaten to move every time they don’t get there way. To this day, I still can’t stand that asshole Reinsdorf for threatening to move the Sox to Florida
Maybe, just once, someone will call me 'Sir' without adding, 'You're making a scene."

I really don’t care about baseball, but moving a teams that’s been there since 1900 is kind of (read: very) wrong.

Tho only at Wrigley
do they run ads encouraging the violation of not only MLB Rules, but also the Illinois criminal code.
Both the MLB and state statute prohibit the throwing of any object onto the field of play from the stands. I’ve never seen a carve out either place for “baseballs batted into fair territory, so as to constitute a home run, by an opposing player.” Frankly, I’ve always thought anyone who would willingly discard a major league baseball, earned fairly by luck or struggle, is an idiot. Same goes for the Cubs homer throw back.
A Sox fan buddy of mine fantasized for years about throwing back a Ryno homer. I’m down with that.

I was there for the birth of Na Na Hey Hey

True
but I would have a difficult time throwing a homerun ball back. (I’m sure I’d do it, but reluctantly.) I once bulled over two old ladies and crushed several teenagers to get a foul ball. LOL, yes, I was mean even back in my early 30s.

Re: Kovy's deal
Someone made the point on PPP that “24 players have played in the NHL at age 42; while only 8 (4 goalies) have played at age 44.” I’m pretty certain that the 4 non-goalies are all Chelios, but that’s neither here nor there, the point is that it’s much more feasible statistically that Hossa still be playing at age 42 than Kovy still playing at age 44. Just a thought.

That’s not a particularly useful chart though in terms of making the case that Kovalchuk’s is circumvention whereas all other contracts that have been allowed are not. You need a chart comparing Kovy’s exclusively against the next most extreme contract of that type.
by Beantown Canuck on Jul 22, 2010 2:28 PM CDT up reply actions
I like how you were careful were you treaded there by not saying Hossa! ;)
But although all of these contracts take advantage of a loophole and I disagree with them, statistically Kovy’s contract would still deviate from Hossa’s significantly. Also you can’t just compared to the “next most extreme” because if you continue that down the line, then eventually you end up with a contract that goes on to infinity. I think this is a pretty fair graph. At least they only used de-escalating contracts and not the league average.

check out the charts here
they pretty much spell out the prudence of signing guys like kovy to uber long contracts. granted – goal scoring isn’t the only reason you sign players long term, but i don’t see Kovy having the incredibly positive locker-room impact Yzerman had in his later years, do you?

This is worth a read and has some real interesting stats.
One last thing
I agree with you Puppet, I just don’t see Kovy being a Stevie Y. It just doesn’t seem to be his type.
Well you just dumped a mediocre NHL player for a career AHLer who makes league minimum. Interesting. Saves you $550,000, but loses you some experience. Interesting. Assuming Taffe, who could rarely crack the shitty Panthers lineup last year, is meant to make your lineup this year.
by Beantown Canuck on Jul 22, 2010 2:24 PM CDT up reply actions
I'm gonna go ahead and guess this was just a cap move for the Hawks
To clear the 1+ mil Reasoner makes. I’m thinking Taffe’s gonna be playing in Rockford. That or MAYBE replacing Kopecky. Toews, Sharp, Bolland, and Dowell will be the centers.
If he’s not going to play on the team, what’s the point of this trade? You could just as easily put Reasoner in the Rockford to get rid of his salary. Or you could have traded Reasoner for a seventh round pick or a longshot prospect. It doesn’t look like this guy is ever going to amount to more than what he is now. My guess is he’s meant to be a 7th forward, no?
by Beantown Canuck on Jul 22, 2010 2:52 PM CDT up reply actions
Taffe
You would deal for Taffe because he has a 2-way deal and can fill in. If you sent Reasoner down, you would have to free up $1.2mil to call him back up. This gives you more flexibility
Actually
according to capgeek, he has a 1-way deal this year for $600K…but at least now they only have to pay $600K to a minor leaguer instead of the approximately $1mil Reasoner will make.
And you also don’t mistreat a veteran who deserves to be in the NHL, not buried in the minors because of cap problems.
Link
http://panthers.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=442252
Maybe it gets converted to a 1-way upon a trade?
wouldn't it be good news for Bollie?
It’s not like we’re growing centers on trees here…
by Katherine215 on Jul 22, 2010 2:30 PM CDT up reply actions
I don't think this means anything for Bollie
it’s not like Taffe is going to take his spot. If anything, I’d assume this would put Kopecky on notice. It appears that Bowman may try to nickel and dime his way toward enough cap space to fill out the roster.
Ditto for CNS
I agree
I don’t see how this affects Bollie at all, unless he was slated to room with Reasoner.

Figured this was a good enough time as any to make my first post...
Just messed around with CapGeek after the Reasoner/Taffe deal and this is what I came up with…
FORWARDS
Patrick Kane ($6.300m) / Jonathan Toews ($6.300m) / Troy Brouwer ($1.025m)
Marian Hossa ($5.275m) / Patrick Sharp ($3.900m) / Tomas Kopecky ($1.200m)
Viktor Stalberg ($0.850m) / Dave Bolland ($3.375m) / Jack Skille ($0.600m)
Bryan Bickell ($0.500m) / Jake Dowell ($0.525m) / ??? (If in house, maybe Makarov?)
DEFENSEMEN
Brent Seabrook ($3.500m) / Duncan Keith ($5.538m)
Brian Campbell ($7.142m) / Niklas Hjalmarsson ($3.500m)
Shawn Lalonde ($0.773m) / Jordan Hendry ($0.600m)
John Scott ($0.512m)
GOALTENDERS
Antti Niemi ($2.500m) /Corey Crawford ($0.800m)
CARRY-OVER BONUS PENALTY: $4,157,753
TOTALS
(these totals are compiled using the bonus cushion)
SALARY CAP: $59,400,000; CAP PAYROLL: $58,874,923; BONUSES: $285,000
CAP SPACE (20-man roster): $810,077
This gives Stan just enough to attempt to sign a UFA 3rd/4th line RW if he wants to add some experience. Obviously the Niemi salary is a complete shot in the dark, but there’s enough here to add some extra cushion to that deal.

Is there any reason
why we aren’t expecting a pay increase for Bickell or Hendry? They have not signed yet, correct?
They are required to earn at least 10% more than the previous season if an RFA making below $1.6 mill i think
by Beantown Canuck on Jul 22, 2010 3:12 PM CDT up reply actions
Hendry was an RFA
but didn’t get a qualifying offer. He’s a UFA now and doesn’t have a minimum, except the league one.
by Katherine215 on Jul 22, 2010 3:13 PM CDT up reply actions
Hmmm
all good info. I guess I just assumed Hendry would have at least a little leverage with the Hawks so thin right now on D. But I guess I over shot what I was thinking they’d make. ($850 for Hendry, $750 for Bickell were my assumptions)
those are a bit higher than I was thinking
but my thoughts were based on hope rather than any real knowledge. Though I don’t know why thye’d let Hendry go UFA if they wanted to just give him the minimum raise or more.
by Katherine215 on Jul 22, 2010 3:19 PM CDT up reply actions
Makes sense
After reading a few comments I’ve lowered my expectations to about $750 for Hendry and $650 for Bickell. And just for background, I’m normally a pessimist.
Though on one of my cap sheets I’ve already penciled in Turco for $1.75 mil….(prays)
they let Hendry go and no one picks him up
so when the Hawks resign him, they had all the bargaining power, despite the lack of cap space. “You want a raise? We can’t afford it. But you can continuing being a UFA if you want then. Or you could continue playing on a contending team for the same salary as last year. If not, the Islanders might have some room…”
I'm expecting a descrease because of Skille's deal.
But again, a shot in the dark.
