Hawks Sign Leddy
Well, all you need is one year at The U (for hockey) apparently. This kid wowed everyone at Prospects Camp, causing some to ridiculously hint that he could replace Campbell this season. While that may be the case down the road, someone with only one year of college experience is probably going to need some serious seasoning, and probably some time in the weight room. Still, one to watch.

It's back to the future...
Where’s my hot tub time machine?
Gonna replace Campbell? Well…
900K cap hit? Does this not guarantee he won’t make the team until Campbell is gone first?
"What doesn't kill us makes us stronger."
That's f'n awesome
I’m genuinely happy for the kid. From his camp interview, he just seemed like a typical nerdy-happy-go-lucky kid that’s thrilled to be playing some hockey in the summertime.
Whether or not he turns out to make the big club – that’s to be seen. But in the meantime, he’s got a job in a great city and doing what he loves to do – play hockey. I’d imagine it’s much better than being a summer intern, painting houses, or waiting on tables like most college kids do for cash.
What’s with the picture of Luongo?

Looks like LaLonde's Rockford replacement has arrived.
I'm not superstitious. I'm just a little stitious.
watched Leddy play in college
really happy he’s impressing
[Tornado] sirens just went off...I grabbed another beer.
Wasn't he
the big piece in the Cam Barker deal?
I remember looking him up, lead the team in +/- I believe. Good sign for a young defensemen
You must have me confused with someone else, I have never been to Chicago.
[whispers] I sexually assaulted Scottie Pippen in 1997.
Well, since the "other" guy died...
Yeah, he is the big piece. We shall call him Nick “The big piece” Leddy.

His girlfriend must be French
Pièce also = “coin,” so maybe she means “roll of dimes.”

Hey
HEY, enough, both of you! Okay, so I was lying. It’s actually a weird nickname, and kinda clunky, but she calls me Don’t Worry, We Can Do Other Things.

I'm on a conference call

Tribune reporting Niemi will go to arbitation Thurday
8:00 AM in Toronto. Does Niemi have to attend? I’m just picturing him waking up that early, he’ll probably have a bad case of “Niemi hair”…
I saw that Ekland is fanning the flames in Niemi’s favor. (puke)
It will be a sad day if we lose Niemi. I hope Da Bowman finds a way to keep him. Don’t want to see him in a Sharks jersey.
"What doesn't kill us makes us stronger."
Not likely
They signed Nittymaki at $2m already. They are still looking for defense to replace Blake.
Beer. Now there's a temporary solution.
Who the hell would he sign with? Could Montrael quit on Price too? It doesn’t seem like too many teams need a goaltender.
19-88-81-2-7-10-36-4-51 : The Hawks
I've been wondering this too.
It seems like a big gamble for Niemi to take that the Hawks will take the arbitrators decision no matter what it comes back as. No team signed him to an offer sheet before he filed for arbitration, so I wonder just how much outside interest he has.

and if
he would get anthing close to what the arbitrator awarded on the free market.
It may come down to a last-minute deal like Columbus did with Stralman

If the Hawks walk
from an arbitrator’s award, they cannot resign him for less once he becomes a UFA and can’t find another deal, right?

I'm not certain,
but I believe Niemi has 7 days after the Hawks walk away to come back and sign the qualifying offer the Hawks originally gave him. I don’t know if he can sign with the Hawks for more than the qualifying offer though.
Also, from what I read, if he signs a contract for an amount less than 80% of the arbitrator’s decision (assuming the Hawks walk away), the Hawks have the right to match that offer. So if the arbitrator awards $3m, the Hawks walk, and Niemi then signs an offer for less than $2.4m, the Hawks can match.
I’m getting all of this from here at the bottom of the page. So I may be reading some of it wrong, but I think it’s pretty close.

Good read
So basically if the arbitrator makes his worth more than 2 mil we want it to be only 20% more anything more and we’d decline the offer sheet.
Assuming the Hawks have $2m as their max,
yes, we don’t want the arbitrator to award more than $2.5m.

Eklund
If I myself was signed by the Hawks and had my own contract in front of me, and if Eklund then reported it as happening, I’d stop believing it.

Tomorrow is the big day
By the time I get to work, we’ll know for sure how bad our cap situation is. I’m guessing arbiter rules in Nemo’s favour…. After watching an arbiter decide that Altanta F was worth 2.4 mil …
I had hoped he'd get more time
in the U’s weight room before going to Rockford.
but Chicago has gotten far better at bringing the young talent along, so I’ll just hope they’re right on him being ready

He's 19...
…so Rockford isn’t an option. It’s either the Hawks or Junior.
At this point, it doesn’t look like anyone owns his Junior rights, so if he’s able to pick his spot I’m sure he’ll try to get to one of the OHL powerhouses.
This is to his benefit – the Junior schedule is closer to the professional one than a college schedule is.
Also, is he in camp the Team USA for the World Juniors?

Since leddy played ncaa, he can go straight to the a if that’s what they decide is best for him

Nemo's agent still wants $4MM/year
Which is of course his job – but the guy is really annoying to listen to, all the same. Wonder what the Hawks will do if the arb come in with a figure between 2 – 3 MM? 2.5MM?
He actually said that figure?
where/when did you hear it?
I’m thinking the Hawks have a dollar amount already determined that they won’t go over, and if the arbitrator comes in above it they’ll walk away. Sucks that we would get nothing for him if that happens, though.

We could still do a sign-and-trade
(if we have the summer cap room)
by stanfordron on Jul 28, 2010 11:25 AM CDT up reply actions
I don't think
you can trade a player until the next year if you sign them to an arbitrator’s decision. I think it has to be done before arbitration. I can’t remember where I read that though (maybe here?), so I could be wrong.

one of the sports talkers referred to it yesterday
So I guess take that with a grain of salt – I don’t particularly care to listen to either of those stations, but once in awhile Boers and Berstein are entertaining (for about 5 minutes).
What I want to know
is if the U’s hockey program is not so good now. Has he been the only player pulled out of that program by the controlling team?

One of the Hawks draft picks from 2010
Justin Holl (second round), will be taking Leddy’s place in the Gopher lineup. Another NHL draftee, Max Gardiner (Blues, 3rd round) is also going to play for the U this upcoming season. I would say that this supports the premise that the U’s program is still OK, but, since both of these players were drafted after the first round, the Hawks though that the U’s program was not the best for Leddy.

I'm quite biased in my opinion of the Yellow Rodents...
but I’ve heard nothing but bad things regarding Lucia’s management of the hockey program.
