Around SBN: Tiger Woods Makes His 2012 PGA Tour Debut

On the heels of Sam's post earlier today - I was sent this link from a reader. It seems the Blackhawks are starting up some talks with Jose Theodore. We've seen Theodore's name thrown around before so it's not a huge surprise for us.. though it seems to be for Theodore and his agent.

Best line from the article - "If the Blackhawks can not agree with Niemi, it (he) would become as free as the air 48 hours after the decision of the arbitrator." Free indeed...

If talks with Niemi break down like we're expecting, the Hawks will be talking to every goalie available. Turco is likely the #1 choice but Theodore wouldn't be too far behind.

Is impossible to reading article without, what you say, French accent.

Hard to say how much this is gamesmanship from Stan ahead of the arbitration. We’ll know soon enough.

As I said before, however it turns out, things seem to be trending the Hawks’ way here.

HA! French accent, indeed.

That, and it appears Jose has a bit more experience than we originally thought!

Less than two months before the opening of training camps in the NHL, the options are rather limited to the keeper of 33 years

I know it refers to his years of life on this earth…but, “keeper of 33 years”, that’s a long fucking time!

they played this after Hawk goals (except for Toews “JohnnyBGoode”, Kane, “Rock You Like a HurriKane”, and Sharp “Sharp-dressed man”.)

Last year, they did it for every Hawks goal.

I don’t think they used this prior to 2008-09, but I may be wrong.

Per Wikipedia
Chelsea Dagger was embraced as a theme song by the Blackhawks fans during the 2008-2009 season, when they lost in the Conference Finals to the Detroit Red Wings. The song gained even more attention as the Blackhawks’ goal song during the 2009-2010 season, which culminated in the Blackhawks winning the Stanley Cup for the first time since 1961

I see it like this: Niemi is a great kid with unlimited POTENTIAL, and that is the key word.

But after 49 years of waiting, I’ll be damned if I’m going to downplay what he accomplished. God bless the kid. Please quit the ripping, he did everything we asked him to do, and more.

The bottom line is this, it looks pretty grim, looks like Niemi is gone, and I for one will miss him.

my thoughts are simply

that of all the players on this team, I would never place him in the “irreplaceable” category. I agree, I’ll miss him if he goes, but I dont consider it a major body blow to the team. I’m not ripping him, he just isn’t worth more than 2 mil a year right now, hopefully his agent realizes that too

I think there’s a solid argument for 2 million, and I’m behind it for the most part. I wonder though, if we didn’t have any cap problems … I’d bet the vast majority of people (myself included) would say that Niemi is well worth 3 million.

I think we’re a worse team, period, with Turco or Theodore instead of Niemi. It’s just my opinion, and I’ll be ecstatic to be wrong. I also think we’re not as good with The Replacements instead of Ladd, Buff, Eager, Versteeg, Burish, Sopel.

So. I think the division is up for grabs, and once you’re out of first place there, it’s just a game or 2 that separates 4th from 8th place. I don’t think it’s a doomsday scenario, but if Niemi goes too, then this has been nothing but a wholesale dismantling of a Cup winner, core or no core. Too bad Stan had not other real options.

I don’t think of 3 million as lofty, I guess (well … relative to my own salary I do). i disagree that his potential is "unlimited"

Nemo is going to be 27 at the end of August, which means he should be entering his prime. I like Nemo, but it’d be nice to have a full season or two in the NHL before getting into your prime years.

I know that many goalies do play well into their thirties, and I like nemo and would like him to be our goaltender, but I believe his ceiling is just a bit higher than what we saw in the playoffs: Pretty solid the majority of games, with a few spectacular saves sprinkled in, but I don’t think he’s ever going to be a “jesus, how do we get pucks past this guy!” goalie. He’ll have his nights though.

In comparison, Jonas Hiller is 28, a bit of a late bloomer, but I think Hiller’s ceiling is much higher than Niemi’s.

Ditto for CNS

LOL Cliff.

I like Niemi and I think he definitely contributed to winning the Cup. However, Huet also contributed. Niemi has a lot of POTENTIAL, I agree. I will miss him if/when he’s gone. I just have to agree with Cliff and others though that losing Niemi in itself is not the end of the team. If the Hawks struggle in the coming season it will be more of a result of losing players like Ladd, Madden, Steeger, Sopes, and yes, Burish than for losing Niemi.

Stop with dismissing Niemi's talent

The Hawks are going to be left eating a shit sandwich in goal if Niemi doesn’t sign. The guy has the definite makings of a solidly above average NHL goaltender. To dismiss his talent and say he’s simply a product of a great defense is horseshit.

Losing Niemi shall be huge. Losing Niemi to San Jose will especially suck. Somehow Zito and Bowman need to strike a deal on Niemi before the arb hearing. Theodore? Turco? God save the queen if we are reduced to that.

As your carefully worded comment suggests, it’s too soon to say that he’a a solidly above-average NHL goaltender today.

Goalies are like hemlines- why it was only a year ago that Tim Thomas won the Vezina and Varlomov was Jaroslav Halak.

Most people here like Nemo- you’re knocking down a strawman.

It’s not like the Hawks were some so-so team that caught lightning in a bottle in the form of an unheralded 26-year old Finnish goalie. That’s not what happened.

I’d take Nemo over Turco or Theodore, but getting one of those guys (Turco particularly) plus $0.5 million seems like about a wash.

The fact is we may lose Nemo, but plan B, as envisioned here, ain’t so bad..

How are we supposed to know what his talent level is? 39 games = 4 million dollar contract. A Stanley Cup on a non-cash strapped team might mean 4 million, but what else are the Hawks supposed to do?

In all fairness...
It takes roughly 25 games to win the cup. Do you really think that Niemi is going start 25 games in a row? Can you name one time this year he has? 20 games? 15? 10? Do I keep going? And no, neither has Huet – as far as know, ever. So if you really believe that we won’t see both goalies in the playoffs (if we make a run), then IMO you are mistaken. You can’t give away games in the playoffs.

this was pretty damn funny though, I guess I wont post sarcastic responses to Blou anymore because it appears pointless.

It'll be what it'll be,

but think back and count the number of soft goals (the ones you or I could have stopped) that Niemi let in the entire year. Maybe 10% of the number Huet let in. We don’t win the Stanley Cup with a lesser goalie. Not saying it has to be Niemi, but we need a legitimate goalie.

But I’m definitely a Niemi lover.

Fake stats are fun aren't they?

Niemi let in just as many weak goals as Huet did. That’s a fact (see what I did there?). The main difference between the two is, Niemi was able to keep his composure and get right back to his job while Huet seemed to struggle afterwards.

i love the unintentional poetry
The Blackhawks will also address the case of goaltender Cristobal Huet, who no longer seems to be part of the plans, but he still has two years of contract to sell, 5.6 million for each of the next two seasons. Between the branches, whispering that the team would dream of buying the contract of French goalkeeper.

But when it was suggested to him that Toews v. Kane seems likely to become a sidebar to every future international hockey tournament, he smiled and said: "I'd like us to win something together, too." -- 2/28/10, so our Captain has said, and so it was done.

Have you

by Germware on Jul 29, 2010 3:23 PM CDT up reply actions

there's plenty of good curry here

around here, my favorite is Swati’s on Devon St. in chicago, only b/c it’s let’s formal than a lot of the sit-down places in the suburbs or the city.

I think of scottish/irish/eglish curry as a pared-down version of Indian flavors, but still good, just not as hot. Examples: chips and curry, or most chickan kormas. I mean, I’d never even heard of Chicken Korma till i stayed to scotland, probably b/c it’s too bland for most of my family. BUT, it’s much better than the American version of watered-down Indian curry, which is usually a bad balance of spices (and sometimes missing important spices) in addition to being not-spicy.

happy ninja is happy....and wants to share its new toy!

by puppetmasterp on Jul 29, 2010 3:32 PM CDT up reply actions

Right

Just because Scotland (Glasgow in particular) is generally seen as being better than a lot of places for curry, especially if you don’t go for something boring like Korma or Tikka Masala.

by Germware on Jul 29, 2010 3:42 PM CDT up reply actions

ah, i see

well i’ve never had british curries outside of edinburgh or the indian enclaves in london, so i guess i’d be bad for comparison. I’ve actually never been to Glasgow. I think someone once made me some microwave frozen-curry in Dover once, but i kind of blocked that taste out of my memory.

But what i had was LOADS better than almost anything i ever had in Boston, which is where Indian food goes to die.

happy ninja is happy....and wants to share its new toy!

by puppetmasterp on Jul 29, 2010 3:47 PM CDT up reply actions

Never had an Edinburgh curry, so I can’t tell you if that’s a “proper” place to go for curry. If you’re ever in the neighbourhood (i.e. country) again, I’ll try & arrange something.

My first foray into Indian food was assisted by a Brit who lives in Denver now – the guy is an Indian foodie. That was his first recommendation. Here’s how I’d break down the broadcasting teams in town:
Harrelson and Stoney – booo
Farmer and DJ – booo
Len and Bob – yay (except on nights when brenly decides he’s going to talk about catchers 90% of the time)
Pat and Ron – 1/2 boo
Foley and Edzo – yay
John and Troy – yay
Joniak and Thayer – 1/2 boo (not a big thayer guy, joniak is the man)
Funk and King – boo
Swirsk and Air Canda – meh, sort of yay

You know you don’t care that much about your music intake when your a cub fan listening to the Sox radio broadcast in your car. I don’t tune in to Farmer and DJ often, but I regret it every time that I do. Farmer will occasionally go like 2 whole innings before telling you the score of the game.

I feel this way about Richard Milne on WXRT

I know we’re not talk deejays here but his “I’m smarter than you” attitude is such a turn-off. It’s a pity, too, because I usually love his musical selections but if he’s starts on one of his diatribes, I’m changing stations…

Milne is one of the originals there, so he gets a pass from me

I also worked with him wayyyyy back at NIU, on the student station there. Great guy, still sounds the same, knows his sh-t backwards and forwards. He started at XRT around 1985, if memory serves. I also listened to Hemmert back in the day, and let me tell you, she’s something awful now. Unlistenable, and it doesn’t help that their playlist during the daytime is so severely scripted now – the station is almost unrecognizable from those days. No balls, they never used to play freaking Motown, etc.

by Speed3 on Jul 29, 2010 7:20 PM CDT up reply actions

Not sure why

Most people are more comfortable with Turco over Theo. Personally, Theo would be awesome with our D in front of him. He’s very similar to Niemi in the sense that he can stop the first shot just fine but leaves a lot of rebounds laying around and if that worked before, I don’t see why it won’t work again. Hell, he went 30-7-7 with the “defense” of the Caps in front of him. Imagine the year he would have had if he was on the Hawks. I keep hearing all this “Turco’s puck handling is great” bologna but I’d rather have a goalie that can keep us in the game than one that makes pretty plays behind the net (remember Brodeur in the Olympics?).

“OMG but his breakout passing is sick!” Yay! You’re right! That’ll be fun the one or two times in the season when it gets converted. I’d rather have a goalie with more upside than one that’s been trending downward the last few seasons.

If we lose Niemi, it’s Theodore OVER Turco, not the other way around.

by Ban on Jul 29, 2010 2:52 AM CDT reply actions

I disagree. We haven’t had a goalie yet that can initiate our breakout, I don’t think you can underestimate how effective that will be in helping to neutralize a forecheck (the kind of forecheck that Nashville almost beat us with, and may very well have if it wasn’t for that shortie with 12 seconds left).

Also, Theodore has been pulled two playoffs in a row now. I don’t have a lot of confidence in his big-game brain. Turco has at least shown he can battle mentally. Theodore has shown he can win a bunch of games with a President’s Cup team that plays Tampa, Florida, Atlanta and Carolina for almost a third of its schedule.

by ChicoMaki on Jul 29, 2010 7:58 AM CDT up reply actions

I don't know about that

a good puck handling goalie with a mobile puck moving defense can be deadly to other teams – and it isn’t primarily a matter of the occasional quick outlet for the breakaway.

It is more about the keeping the other team pinned in its own end for long streatches of time (with no line change, while you work fresh players into the mix regularly). The Hawks did some of that here and there last year, imagine ramping that up a few notches with a good puck handling goalie to keep even more pressure on a pinned down team.

Confusion will be my epitaph.

I would think...

Hawks come in around 1.9 and Niemi’s camp wants 2.75. Hawks can’t affor much more than 1.9, Hawks have about 4.9 Free and they still need to bring in 2 D and a Forward (really a 4th line Center), Crawford is 800K and that would put them at a roster minimum 20 players. I would assume if they can get Theo or Turco for half that its a no-no to Niemi.

by pnote on Jul 29, 2010 9:51 AM CDT up reply actions

why do you say 4th line center? wouldn’t dowell fill that role? or are you moving bolland to center the second line and dowell to the third?

by modnar on Jul 29, 2010 10:09 AM CDT up reply actions

I thought about Dowell

I had Bolland slotted in on the 2nd, I would like Sharp to play Wing more than Center. I mean players will fall into place where they are the strongest but who do you have as a 4th Center right now?

by pnote on Jul 29, 2010 10:15 AM CDT up reply actions

i had sharp staying at center on the second line, bolland centering the third and dowell centering the fourth.

by modnar on Jul 29, 2010 10:45 AM CDT up reply actions

yeah

I had that too at first, Sharp is more than capable.

I thought they might move Reasoner but it still took my by surprise. Lets see what a Goalie costs them, if Turc or Theo come in cheaper than Niemi than I don’t see why they don’t save the cash. I really haven’t looked to see who is still available in terms of a Center and what D men are left. Modano won’t happen but would be a good fit for the 4th line.

by pnote on Jul 29, 2010 10:53 AM CDT up reply actions

I’d sort of like to see Crawford get a look during the Preseason.

I'm going to reply to myself here because I'm having a thought (yes even I have them)

We should analyze the goalie styles and their success in reg season and playoffs. The thought (hypothesis) I am having is that the more athletic goalies have better success in the playoffs and the pure positional goalies have less success then, but may show better stats during the regular season.

The problem will be to decide who is what style of goalie.

Huet = positional butterfly
Niemi = athletic
Turco = athletic
Theodore = positional butterfly
Price = positional butterfly

I don’t know if these are correct, but it’s a start.

Have at it.

Personally, I don’t own one, I use BROOM to sweep the driveway, deck patio, etc. much quieter. Some of the bastards will run the blower for an hour. What the fuck is that?

Why does the arbitrator need 48 hours. They should get 48 minutes.

Is Doug Wilson going to offer Turco 2.5 just to fuck with Bowman?

When the arbitrator gives Niemi the same (2.5), it’ll give us Crawford and two rookie Stanley Cup winning goalies in a row. Who has done that before?

Who are our centers now? Toews, Sharp, Bolland, Dowell?

If we're onto literature

I recall a short story named “The Scarlet Ibis” that operates like a powerful onion ’pon my eyes..

Same here

But only the original with James Caan and Billy Dee, not the remake with Hugh D. Fock and Watts Izname.

I guess that should be readily assumed, but sometimes we need to clarify these things for the young hipsters.

You can always

lock yourself in a room and put on Korn. Thrash around and run into walls. You’ll better. If Niemi gets a low price and us Chicago fans get what we want……..put on some easy listening music(what ever you like…i would like to know as well) and smoke a Padron 6000.

It could take a while

Blake Wheeler’s arbitration was on Tuesday and the decision was supposed to come out today but it has been delayed and he had the same arbitrator as Niemi.

It’s a weird situation with the convention starting tomorrow. I’m guessing Niemi will be there and he might not even be a member of the team next week (though I hope this doesn’t happen)

by hawkswin!hawkswin! on Jul 29, 2010 4:04 PM CDT reply actions

it would be even weirder

if he wasn’t a Hawk by the end of the convention.

by Katherine215 on Jul 29, 2010 4:44 PM CDT up reply actions

Good point

I’d think if the arb award is too much and the Hawks decide to let Niemi go Stan would wait until the convention is over to make the announcement if he has that option, unless the ruling comes out today or early tomorrow.

by hawkswin!hawkswin! on Jul 29, 2010 4:53 PM CDT up reply actions

On the other hand

If we can keep him without any further dismantling, making the announcement at the convention would be quite awesome.

Guessing that it's a summary of the events

Arbitration is a really ugly thing you have to lay your cards on the table and really argue why the person should be paid less. Especially when they’re far off. I would imagine that a presser could be very bad news.. as in… I think we’ve lost… therefore we’re moving on.

by 2883 on Jul 29, 2010 5:41 PM CDT up reply actions

He might also have some real kind things to say

about Niemi in hopes that they can cut the difference between the two before the arbiter makes his decision. The agent would be silly to take it unless the arbitration hearing went really poorly for Niemi… or Niemi says fuck it what’s another 500,000.

I don’t think Niemi’s giving that hometown discount though

by 2883 on Jul 29, 2010 5:44 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm still hoping for the best

but preparing for the…well, not-as-best. I love Nemo and would love to see him stay, but I’m having a hard time being confident about a good outcome to this.

Booze will certainly help. It tastes great, makes woman appear more attractive, and makes a person virtually invulnerable to criticism.
