Get That Cash And Make A Stash

Hey can I sell this?

By now you've probably seen this article by Melissa Harris.  For the uninitiated, Rocky Wirtz admits that the Hawks lost money last season, and in fact ran out of cash a few times.

It's hard to know where to start.  Call it a scarred upbringing, but when a Wirtz talks about money I'm always hesitant to believe him.  However, I don't know why Rocky would go public with this if it wasn't true.  I'm not sure what he would be angling for.  And it's not that hard to believe.  The Hawks were so backward and have had to add so much that they didn't quite have income for, so it's not hard to fathom they might be in the red.  In addition, though we bitched about the ticket price raise, it's kind of silly that the the team that plays in the fourth biggest market in the league (and how much of a hockey market is LA anyway?) had prices in the bottom third.  Ask Leafs fans how they feel about their prices.  They are what they can get, and the Hawks won't have an unsold ticket next year.

Secondly, I wonder  where this puts Rocky and McDonough on the upcoming CBA negotiations.  Revenue sharing must be driving them up a wall, but the NHL will never go without it.  So will they be pushing to bring the cap down significantly even though it'll gut their own team?  Will they push for a luxury tax to take some revenue sharing burden off of them?  I have no idea.

As Chris Block pointed out, there's a quote from McDonough in the article about making the Hawks a prime place for free agents, and top flight organization . I had been thinking about this before this article came out.  But currently, the Chicago Cubs are carrying a lot of ridiculous contracts that have hamstrung their ability to build a team.  These contracts were handed out in a time when the club was trying to make itself more attractive for a sale.  The Chicago Blackhawks find themselves with a few to many heavy metal contracts that have hamstrung their ability to keep their team together, contracts that were handed out when the Hawks were trying to establish themselves as an organization that was back with the times again.  What's the connection between these two?  If you think that McDonough hasn't had his fingerprints in both, then I think life will continue to be hard for you.

-Hey, Comcast Sportsnet will be televising the opening ceremonies of the Blackhawks Convention tonight.  So if you want to completely nullify your usefulness to society, then go ahead and watch ON TELEVISION a bunch of rich kids from Winnetka chasing around Patrick Kane and some sweaty, fat men in Toews jerseys.

-I'm going to take a bit of a break from the blog, but the Matt's and GMH will have you covered.  We'll talk again in September.

I'm inclined to believe

that the Hawks may have had an operating loss but the value of the franchise has gone through the roof. It’s sort of like if you had to take out a home equity loan to fix all the broken windows, stairs and railings in the house, but in the mean time God pissed down a gold plating that completely covered your house. Sure you’ve got to pay that loan back and you can bitch and piss and moan about your loan payments sitting on the bar stool at your favorite corner, bar but if you felt like selling that house you’d make a fortune.

True or not,
However, I don’t know why Rocky would go public with this if it wasn’t true.

I think he announced this to justify the steep increase in ticket prices.
As for the losses, he talks about I’m pretty sure a large amount of that is on paper and was re-directed to the Wirtz Corporation.

Maybe, just once, someone will call me 'Sir' without adding, 'You're making a scene."

Compairing the Hawks to the Cubs

This makes me break out in a cold sweat. I’m unfortunately a Cubs fan, and the agony of the last two years make me fear the Hawks future. Anyways, have a good August Sam, see you around.

There are only two seasons in Chicago; Hockey and Construction.

Re: McDonough & free agents

Isn’t that a fairly common strategy? Look at, say, Minnesota with Havlat, Philly with Hartnell & Briere and the Rangers with basically every player on their roster whose name you recognise.

Never ever believe an NHL owner's assessment of his own books - never ever

Throughout the history of the NHL, essentially every owner has claimed to have lost money every single year – accoding ot the official books anyway. It is their oldest and dearest trick – particularly around times to raise ticket prices or discuss salaries/CBA with the players (it was in fact the main bamboozling act that kept the players form starting the NHLPA for several additional years).

Some teams do actually lose money. But all of them claim to do so, and that isn’t always true.

Has anyone ever listened to "The Dub Side of the Moon" by the Easy All-Stars?

By far my favorite cover album ever. They do the entire Dark Side album reggae/dub style, but stay very true to the original. It’s surprisingly good, even if you’re not a reggae or dub fan.

IMO the best track is Us and Them, but Money is pretty good too, especially the substituted effects at the start of the song. If you’re ever partying on a boat in the Keys, it is the perfect disc.

I don’t think Rocky is a bad guy. I sill think Hawk tickets are comparatively cheap. I know sports franchises are often ego excursions and not the most profitable businesses around. But he’s too smart to have lost money on this team last year in any real sense, and I feel a little insulted that he expects me to swallow this poor-mouthing.

Exactly.

Using the best possible opportunities to make money…good ol’ capitalism, friends. Yeah, it sucks ass, but can you really blame him.

Also, losing “not as much” money, is the new "up" or "profit" in a terrible economy. Remember too, the team was farting out a terrible on-ice product that brought in half-empty arenas, a laughable TV contract (twice as bahahaha as the NHL TV contract in general) which included only half their games, not nearly the amount of sponsors you see now, etc. etc. etc. You can’t expect them to make a giant LEAP into the black in two years, after many, many years of losses.

Which big 'heavy metal' contract (other than Campbell) would anyone want to give up?

(* Huet’s contract is already dead to me, thanks Rocky for picking up the tab on that one.)

The “core” contracts are eating up most of the cap, true – but once we get past this ‘bonus penalty’ season (and assuming the cap will increase from year to year), I think the team is set up for a good 5-year run with this core group. If some of the rookies come through, I don’t think any of our big contracts other than Soup can’t be moved if the team wants to plug a different piece into the “core”.

And I kind of figured that you have your top two lines, and your top 4 D-men.. then there’s a “checking” line, an “energy” line, and a couple of young defensemen to round out most any hockey club. You should be able to pick up these role players on the relative cheap, right?

The incredible depth the Hawks had last year was the exception to the hard-cap rule.

by The Deputy Mayor of Rush Street on Jul 30, 2010 6:13 PM CDT reply actions

A good 5yr run?

It could be a lot longer – really depends on the next CBA.

Figure Keith, 26, is just starting to enter his prime and will be playing at an elite level for another decade. Ditto Seabs.

Hjalmarsson is 23 and the next wave of stud d-men (Lalonde, Leddy, Olsen) are not yet old enough to buy a beer. How those 3 develop will be very interesting.

With a bit of luck and some good development time, Chicago’s defense could possibly be locked up for the next 10+ years. If Bowman keep fleecing every trading partner for prospects and higher picks, the pipeline for the forward position will be stocked.

No reason to worry. Now if there’s a rash of big injuries or the CBA is completely fucked…then worry.

One other thing about the raise in ticket prices for season tickets

They didn’t do it last year. Last year they jacked up the single game tickets and left the season ticket holders alone. When i saw that last year, I knew I was fucked this year. My bet is they’ll barely raise the single game prices this year, if at all, as a shout out to the loyal fans who support them on a game-by-game basis.

But like others have said, it’s all just creative accounting.

The one paragraph that really struck out at me was the fact that they’re talking about putting two more bars in there. I can’t believe the markup on the booze justifies the removal of those seats, but maybe it does for the Bulls games which is why they felt the need to do it again. Gonna be some pissed off displaced ticket holders again…

Lord Stanley's new address: Sweet Home Chicago!

by ChicagoNativeSon on Jul 30, 2010 11:08 PM CDT up reply actions

Still

He’s at a 3.75 mil cap his and his first year is 2.75 mil (the last 3 years are higher so he’d sign the contract and avoid arbitration), which is where you’d have to look considering Halak’s age and Niemi’s contract length, which most likely would’ve been a year. Plus Halak has more experience. Basically, while it is a comparable player, you can’t look at the cap hit and base it off that, but should instead look at what Halak’s making the first year.

The thing that blows about the whole arbitration situation is that the arbitrator may or may not actually know about hockey. Very shitty logic IMO.

by Ban on Jul 30, 2010 11:14 PM CDT up reply actions

I believe the Arbitrator has to be approved

by both sides. If this is the case and Niemi is awarded $4 million, the Hawks may want to consider finding someone more capable of evaluating Arbitrators.

Maybe, just once, someone will call me 'Sir' without adding, 'You're making a scene."

by cdz3210 on Jul 30, 2010 11:30 PM CDT up reply actions

Stan is playing this right

He talked up Niemi by saying all the right things to drive the arbitration award up…higher the better.

Let’s say the award is something idiotic, James Wisniewski earning (using that term loosely) $3.25m idiotic; Niemi gets $4.5m-ish

Who will sign Niemi at that price? No one.

If you can’t sign him and stay under the cap, it’s best to drive up his price and wreck someone else’s payroll, or have him go back to Europe b/c he can’t find a good team that’ll pay him decent, or he’ll sign below 80% of the award and Stan can fleece another Eastern Conference team of their prospects & perhaps a pick.

Fuck it. If the dude thinks he’s worth $4m+ I’d have no problem with an arbitrator handing him a piece of paper saying exactly that. Watching to see which idiot GM would pay that much could be kinda interesting.

by Bluliner on Jul 30, 2010 11:55 PM CDT up reply actions

As much as I love Niemi

It’d be pretty satisfying seeing him make less than he’s awarded by the arbitrator with a non-contender. Something about greedy people getting screwed over that fills me with joy. He made what…800k last year? 2.5-3 mil is a HUGE raise and if you feel like that’s not enough even though you’re a sophomore goaltender, well then you deserve whatever you get.

by Ban on Jul 31, 2010 3:04 AM CDT up reply actions

Is it greed?

Of course these salaries are much more than what we make, and we would take it in a heartbeat, but do you know how much the Hawks were offering him? What if they only offered 1 or 1.5 mil? You are assuming that the number was 2.5-3 mil.

by stacie7 on Jul 31, 2010 3:27 AM CDT up reply actions

As far as I know

the arbitrators were selected, approved, and appointed jointly by the league and the NHLPA when the CBA was written. They’re the same people each year and the player/club don’t have any say in who the actual arbitrator is for their particular case.

Then again, I could be wrong. Just passing on what I’ve read elsewhere.

by Ban on Jul 31, 2010 2:58 AM CDT up reply actions

In one of those ""friend of a friend that knows someone"...

I heard it’s for 2.8 million. To me that sounds about right. Now the second part of the story is that the Hawks will be shopping Niemi and Campbell as a package deal. My reply to the second part of this was a simple “Are you out of your fucking mind”?

Maybe, just once, someone will call me 'Sir' without adding, 'You're making a scene."

I'm going to believe Sassone's intelligence on this one

The guy is right many more times then he is wrong. He was with the Hawk braintrust this afternoon and this is the information he has been fed. I find no reason to believe the Hawks would send out misinformation on something so critical.

But I do believe you about the tooth fairy.

by Ban on Jul 30, 2010 10:46 PM CDT up reply actions

Sounds pretty risky

I would suspect the Hawks would have a potential trade partner in waiting then? What if they signed Niemi at (for example, $4M) and couldn’t trade him? Then we’d have to dump someone like Sharp to make room. Without a trade partner lined up it’s high stakes poker and the results could potentially make a bad situation worse if someone called Stan’s bluff.

Lord Stanley's new address: Sweet Home Chicago!

by ChicagoNativeSon on Jul 30, 2010 11:31 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah, I've thought about that

Surely Bowman has talked to a few GMs to see if there’s any interest out there. The good thing is, we have 48 hours to make calls, find potential partners, and try to spark a deal before Niemi becomes a UFA.

by Ban on Jul 31, 2010 3:00 AM CDT up reply actions

Are you sure about that?

I know that is what was said on here, but I know I read on a few different articles that signing him and trading him was still an option.

I'm seeing both stories...

I did a search and it seems many sites believe you can’t sign and trade after arbitration, but I’m not seeing that on any of the more official sites. I think you guys are right and it only refers to a team signing a player after they receive an offer sheet from another team:
If the original team chooses to accept, or "match" the offer sheet, the player cannot be traded for one year.

According to StanBow

“The arbitrator will make the ruling I believe some time Saturday,” Hawks general manager Stan Bowman said Friday. “At that point, we have 48 hours in which to accept the award or walk away from the award, or trade the award. It will be one of those three scenarios, which will ultimately happen.”

So apparently trading Nemo is an option.

So your friend of a friend

really did know or pulled a great number out of his/her ass. I’ll go with the 1st choice: Good call.

But hearing the ‘Hawks said $1.5M and Niemi said $4M it didn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out $2.75M was smack-dab in the middle.

I’d rather see Stan trade Nemo (to some shitbag Wales Conf team) & use some savings for Turco and allow a slightly higher priced youngster or 2 ($850k~$1M) come up rather than letting Nemo walk right out the door to SJ.

Just win the next game...!

Ticket prices and ticket scarcity

Look, we all knew that as soon as this franchise once again tasted success then ticket prices were going to skyrocket. It’s called supply and demand. John McDonough has done a brilliant job of getting the Hawks into the mainstream of the Chicago sports scene with the bandwagoners, etc. It is those people, many who have marginal knowledge or true passion for the Hawks, who will have voracious appetite for Hawks’ tickets. Remember the Bulls during the Michael Jordan era? Going to a Bulls game become the “in” thing to do for every yuppie and corporate executive type in Chicago, and ticket prices went thru the roof. Unfortunately this same phenomenon is about to hit the Hawks BIGTIME. Which is sad, because the crowd makeup for games at the United Center is going to fundamentally change.

You can’t blame Rocky for milking this thing for all its worth. First and foremost he is a businessman. A successful businessman who has been entrusted by his fellow family members to look out for their best long-term interests when it comes to the hockey franchise part of the empire.

The Blackhawks and the Stanley Cup in 2010.

by BLou on Jul 30, 2010 10:39 PM CDT reply actions

Is anyone really "shocked" that the ticket prices are going up?

They may still be in the red too. If his Dad left the Hawks in such sad state of affairs (with I believe I read it was an 191 mil deficit) I can believe it. They are on the upswing and I would expect them to be running in the black soon. Now do I believe that the Wirtz family is hurting for money over this – no. I don’t blame them for trying to get the Hawks to run self sufficiently without help from the other companies. Like you said, he is a businessman and he will do whatever it takes to make it all work.

How would you like a job where, every time you make a mistake, a big red light goes on and 18,000 people boo?

by stacie7 on Jul 30, 2010 10:43 PM CDT up reply actions

no different than most of the 70's

It was very cost – prohibitive for most Chicagoans to afford Hawks games up until the time when the team became less competitive in the late 70’s (the “RPM line” days). The city was starved for a winner, and the Hawks were about as close as you could get. So unless the Bears surprise almost everyone (and the Bulls will probably be another meh year), sounds about right.

you mean “completely abandoned,” because I’m apparently still in mental hibernation (read: have a new job), and also I’ve pretty much been priced out of the 2010-11 season, motherfuckers. Um, yeah. Sorry, coherent thoughts later, when I actually see a team out on the ice? I’m pretty much fine with whomever ends up in net, by the way—as much as I love them, goalies seem to be faceless vessels for bitching, at least until we have real numbers to work with.

I don't think this has been posted here before

Wisniewski has been traded to the Islanders for an optional 3rd round pick. To quote NHL.com, that means:

The Islanders will have the option until June 1, 2011, to transfer to Anaheim their own third-round selection in the 2011 Entry Draft or Colorado’s third-round selection, previously acquired by the Islanders.

The stand-out line for me from John McD:

“We want this to be a place where players want to play. … We’re going to charter our players (to away games) and we’re going to stay in hotels that are going to be synonymous with a first-class operation.”

“The team now typically lodges at the Four Seasons.”

Growing up, the appeal of hockey players vs. the rest of the professional sports world was how low-maintenance they were. They were drinkers, carousers, they fought and were generally good ‘ol boys off the ice. While the professional landscape has changed, I can’t help but let that quote bolster my opinion of McD as a yuppie marketing guru who makes tangential arguments to support an equation of superficiality equaling success. The Hawks were an amazingly deep squad because Tallon knew how to build a team. Not because McD knows luxury…

All of the players comment

by Katherine215 on Aug 1, 2010 4:49 PM CDT up reply actions

The only way teams like the 'Hawks

are going to cough up a little less of the revenue sharing BS is for Bettman and his front office finally figure out how to promote this league better so it gets a REAL TV contract.

The fact the ’Hawks had to cough up about half their playoff ticket REVENUE (did I read that correctly? Yikes!!) tells me this league expanded too fast & too far into markets they were not prepared to sell to well enough.

However, if Rocky truly continues to believe in championships over a PnL statement, then salary caps and the next dreaded CBA won’t be nearly as bad as we think they can be.

The key on the local level is for the ’Hawks to absolutely leverage as much as they possibly can out of their media contracts.

Just win the next game...!
