So I'm not totally sure what these mean... The Hawks already won the Cup so we don't have to "hope" for anything but a repeat at this point.  Either way - it's pretty slow around here and these stencils are just awesome.  Sam and I saw one outside Hot Doug's yesterday and according to Flickr this one is Diversey and Sacramento which is also in Logan Square.  I'm not sure if they're in any other neighborhoods but if you see one feel free to share a picture or just the location.

I'm also quite thankful that whoever made them didn't give Coach Q the nose of a pig...

The way I understand it Hjammer is not arbitration eligible.

Well now I'm just confused

Is there a deadline on offer sheets from other teams? Or is there some other reason he hasn’t accepted his QO?

I think my brain leaked out everything unlearned about ufa/rfa stuff last week.

by shinkicker on Jul 6, 2010 10:50 AM CDT via mobile up reply actions

hammer doesn’t have arbitration rights because this is the end of his entry level deal. you gain them latter.

as for a deadline, his are done. he has is QO and can sign it whenever he wants (which he won’t do) and can accept and offer from a team at any point and time. there is no deadline and there’s always the possibility of him not being signed before camp.

by modnar on Jul 6, 2010 11:40 AM CDT up reply actions

So much for hoping that’d be resolved quickly/easily.

Hjammer’s not eligible for arb, no, as modnar wrote above. Players’ deadlines for arb was yesterday; teams’ deadline is today.

I don’t think there’s an official deadline just on offer sheets, although the Dec 1 deadline would kick in for those, too, I’d think (the date past which a free agent can no longer come on board, and so the season is done for him).

An RFA with any kind of leverage whatsoever, which is pretty much everyone, would rarely just accept his QO outright, as I understand it, unless they were AHLers exclusively. QOs are basically just window dressing, their sole function being to secure the rights of the player so he doesn’t become a UFA. RFAs receive them, and they then proceed to work out a contract (or go to arbitration, as the case may be).

As to waiting for Nemo’s number to come in, that may well be the case. We’re scraping for every dollar … but arbitration hearings don’t begin until July 20, so if we are trying to iron out a contract with him before then, I doubt it will happen for 2 more weeks yet.

I also hope we're not making Hjammer wait for Niemi

I love Niemi a lot but the order of importance is definitely Hjammer and then Niemi. Resigning Hjammer should be the front office’s top priority.

it's entirely possible this isn't sarcasm

by boldmatter on Jul 6, 2010 12:50 PM CDT up reply actions

I hope so, too

As much as i love Niemi, there are still some serviceable goalies out there but Hjammer need to be the priority.

I’m guessing that the scenario is that Hjammer’s salary could be higher if he waits to see what happens with Niemi but if he signs now, it will be lower. I’d wait, too, if I were Hjammer if that is the case but I’m personally getting impatient (as if that makes a damn bit of difference to any of them. LOL!)

by desertindian on Jul 6, 2010 10:55 AM CDT up reply actions

Zito is telling Antti he's worth at least $4 mil

which is why he filed for arb and is trying to milk his playoff performance for all its worth … I’d say it’s worth $2 million and a bowl of Wheaties. if I were Niemi I’d be asking Stan to pay the Hammer because he’s going to save his ass a couple of times this season.

by junkhorse on Jul 6, 2010 3:59 PM CDT up reply actions

I’ve already posted this on ahnfire’s fanshot but I think he’ll get something similar to what Cam Ward got in 2007 after his arbitration case – a 3-year deal worth $8 million.

Broken down like this:
1st year – $2 million
2nd year – $2.5 million
3rd year – $3.5 million

Keep in mind that Ward had a full season after winning the Stanley Cup as a rookie but you get the idea. Niemi might get a little less than what Ward did on that occasion (less GP and market value of netminders) but it might similar to the tune of:
1st year – $1.75 million
2nd year – $2.25 million
3rd year – $2.75 million

$6.75 million over the 3 years would be a cap hit of $2.25 million per year which is to be expected for a rookie netminder that became only the 3rd netminder to start every game and capture the Stanely Cup as a rookie (Dryden and Roy).

by hawks61 on Jul 6, 2010 4:35 PM CDT up reply actions

jesse rogers

seems to think Niemi won’t get LESS than $3.75m, which is how much the Blues are essentially giving Halak per year in his 4yr $15m deal.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but assuming arbitrators decide only in 1- or 2-year terms, couldn’t an argument against $3.75m be made based off the actual terms of Halak’s deal?
1st year = $2.75m
2nd year = $3.50m
3rd year = $4.25m
4th year = $4.50m

The Blues are basically saying yes, Halak has potential (whether it’s more or less than Niemi’s is up to both sides—the Hawks and Niemi—to dispute) and yes, he does have upside, but the first two years after his performance are only worth $2.75m and $3.50m respectively. His “true” potential, which the Blues are basically speculating/gambling on, lies in his performance in his 3rd/4th year playing for St. Louis.

But when it was suggested to him that Toews v. Kane seems likely to become a sidebar to every future international hockey tournament, he smiled and said: "I'd like us to win something together, too." -- 2/28/10, so our Captain has said, and so it was done.

As I understand it, arbitration

is based on stats and comparable market value. Both sides make their case for what the salary should be looking at the numbers and at what other players of similar caliber have gotten.

The thing is, has there been a situation like the one with Nemo? I mean in terms of a less-than-starter’s game load during the season? The playoff run has been done before by goalies (as already noted) but was there one this “inexperienced?” Niemi is looking for number 1 goalie dollars, but he wasn’t the number one goalie for most of the season. So the stats are a bit enigmatic. How do you compare his stats and performance to others’ when there hasn’t really been any others in this situation? Has there? Unless Rogers has some inside information, I can’t imagine Nemo would get over $3 million as an “unproven” netminder (unproven over the course of a long season) even with the playoff run. (And Nemo did give up a lot of goals in the Finals.) I’m guessing Zito will bring Nemo’s experience as a netminder prior to coming to the Hawks into the discussion. But even with that, the guy has not been through a full season as a #1 netminder. I’d expect 2.5 to 3 mill per year for a 1 or 2 year deal.

It's going in reverse chronological order ...

So Campbell is the second latest free agent bust, rather than the #2 overall.

It’s hard to argue he’s not a bust considering his cap hit, but in my opinion, he’s certainly a better signing than the other 25 guys on that list. I’m pretty sure he was the only one to play substantial minutes during a cup winning playoff run with the team he signed with (Thank you Huet for making me qualify that comment). To me, the difference between him and the other guys is the amount he’s a bust. I’d say he’s only overpaid by 2 million- 3 tops- while some of those other guys were overpaid by a clear 4 or 5 million. That’s the difference between a third liner.

by Billy Charlesbois on Jul 6, 2010 11:45 AM CDT up reply actions

I agree, but you look at the players who have bloated contracts, and they’re almost always UFAs who were the best available players at their position in any given free agency year. Campbell and Huet were the best d-man and goalie available that year, and they got contracts that showed it. You look at guys like Gomez, Drury, Briere … those contracts are just as asinine, but they’re going to be handed out every year to every player. Every year is a new bell curve.

I think it's pretty ridiculous that he won't sign ...

Even if it’s just a two or even one year deal worth 1.5 per, he gets a 100% raise and a chance to showcase himself as a proven start over the course of a season. A team in the Hawks cap situation or any other team shouldn’t be throwing buffo bucks at this guy because of one superior playoff run.

Interesting argument for Modano to Chicago

I have been intrigued by this possibility for a while now but never gave it much hope as i thought the feel-good story of Modano playing for his home-town SCUM would be more plausible than Modano committing to the Indian for a final run for The Cup, but then I saw THIS ARTICLE from Bleacher Report. I know some of the things written there should be taken with a (large) grain of salt, as suggested by some on this blog, but i feel this write-up presents a very convincing case for Chicago being the ideal destination for, arguably, The Greatest American Goal Scorer EVER.

At Puck Daddy, whatever article I read about it had him saying that he’d be pretty interested in fitting in here. And he’s got to know the Hawks’ cap situation, so the money wouldn’t be much.

Since I know NOTHING about Modano’s stats (other than LOTS of points) who exactly would he replace in the lineup from the 42 guys we’ve lost so far?

it's incredible how serious concussions can be

and how little we know of it, even know.

I mean, for some it was easier to believe that Johnsson was involved in some elaborately dramatic behind-the-scenes soap opera that had him shunned by the entire organization than it was to believe that his concussion was just really, really bad.

But when it was suggested to him that Toews v. Kane seems likely to become a sidebar to every future international hockey tournament, he smiled and said: "I'd like us to win something together, too." -- 2/28/10, so our Captain has said, and so it was done.

I always think

a concussion is pretty minor, a bump on the head and you’ll be ok in a few days. I would imagine Johnsson’s brain would be one they’d want to study after he dies. Though I’m hoping they will have a better treatment/cure long before then.

concussions can be scary

in college, one of my residents got one and for over a month, the poor boy had to carry around a notebook to remind himself of things like why he was going to the dining hall, what class he just had, what he was supposed to do later, etc. And that was just from hitting his head while playing touch football out on the quad.

remember, concussion = bruised (shaken) brain

I didn’t think much of them either, until I saw firsthand the effects. Him walking around with his little notebook would’ve been a lot sadder if it wasn’t for the fact that he had such a good sense of humor about it.

Do you know how many times

This has been the “year of the concussion” since those reports about the ex-NFL/boxing brain autopsy experiments came out. Symptoms are pretty awful later in life. Hopefully KJ’s concussion symptoms don’t come back later in life.

Here's an article

that Toews gets absolutely crushed by Mitchell that everyone sees, and he misses, what, 6 games? (can’t remember the exact number, my apologies) And we have Johnsson, gets practically a professional death sentence for a hit no one saw or has video of?

I fully understand that all hits are received and delivered differently by each player…but I have yet to read any description of the hit and how it was delivered, by who, etc?

That and the fact that all of Niemi’s stats are inferior to that of Halak. This is a pretty big win for the Hawks. Especially when you consider Halak is getting $2.75 for this season and Niemi will likely only sign a one-year deal.

I think Niemi’s people would be nuts not to look at these numbers and then look at Stan across the table and remind him who was in net for 16 playoff victories. IDK. I really have no fucking clue, but 2.5M seems too high for Niemi and I hope this does now serve as the bargaining chip they were looking for.

"...can i have a glass of whiskey and a slice of bread?"

Well

now the negotiations probably start at 2.75 and go way lower now. He’s not going to make as much as Halak this season. There’s nothing he can point to and say I’m worth more than him, other than the Cup. That will only carry so much weight with the arbitrator.

FifthFeather.com

Sassone...

Niemi, who filed for arbitration on Monday, no doubt is looking to better Halak’s contract. Winning the Cup puts Niemi in the driver’s seat in negotiations with the Hawks, who might have to give their No. 1 goalie in the neighborhood of $4 million a year.

so noone really fucking knows but this could potentially get ugly.

I get your point

but SV% is (for me) still the best indicator of pure goalie performance there is; GAA is much more of a team stat, and SOs is part luck and part how hot a goalie can get when he goes on a tear.

by Germware on Jul 6, 2010 3:42 PM CDT up reply actions

Not necessarily...

If you have a good D in front of you, it forces opposing teams to take shots they might otherwise not take. So, I’m not sold on SV% as an accurate assessment of goal tending ability. I saw Niemi make some slick saves. I also saw an inexperienced netminder making a lot of rookie mistakes…

The real test will be when he has the new goon line out with him and no one protecting him. My guess is that we will have some folks using SV% at that time as proof that he was way overpaid through arbitration. In neither instance is it very accurate…

by echo on Jul 6, 2010 5:33 PM CDT up reply actions

Don't get me wrong

none of them are perfect. The only point I was trying to make was that, out of GAA, SV% & SOs, SV% is the best indicator of goalie performance. That’s it.

Not quite dominant in the regular season, had a harder playoff run, and won the Cup.

I think the Sharks are going to be hungrier than ever and trying to use this year’s experience as a springboard, the Scum will be, well, the Scum, and some team like the Preds or Kings will be on the rise. The Hawks will have a tough go of it, but I think they’ve got the best top 2 lines and best 4 D-men in the conference. The Hawks may end up 4th in the conference standings, but I think they’ll be good for the playoffs.
