Why are Caps fans taking shots at Hawks' Cap management?
http://www.onfrozenblog.com/2010/07/07/chicago-case-study-in-poor-cap-management.html
I know that most of the comments have been from other Caps fans telling this guy off but I thought it might be worth a look from the find minds over here. Was in the process of commenting on this blog when I realized hey they boys and girls over at SCH may have some interest.
Must preface with the fact that I have been a "lurker" for well over a year and am working on my "how I became a hawks fan post"

Are the Caps and the Hawks really comparable?
Personally, I think Green is a Forward disguised as a defensemen. I really like the fact the majority of the Caps fans on the blog are defending the Hawks.
Thanks. Good read.
And by good I mean hilarious. The comments were pretty funny as well as they were, for the most part, telling the author off. They might not want to let that guy have opinions anymore. Interns, never let them rise too quick.
"...can i have a glass of whiskey and a slice of bread?"
End of the 1st paragraph
And yet, after what the Hawks have had to do in the last few weeks, do Caps fans really wish they were in the same boat as Chicago?
After that joke of a rhetorical question (the answer is “YES!” you idiot) I didn’t need to read any further.

You didn't miss much.
What a moron he is. OK, let’s see, which do you prefer, a consistently competitive team that never wins the Cup or a team that went for broke and won the Cup and STILL has the core of that team? I wish I had stopped when you did.

You should go back

You're right.
The comments are right on point. It’s nice to see some intelligence among the Caps fans.
39 years of pain vaporized by one OT goal.
Weirdly but wonderfully
Reading the Caps fans descriptions of their pain at this year’s playoff exit cause two reactions: first, it reminded me of all the times I’ve shared in this pain; then, almost immediately, I remember that I didn’t go through that this year. Their comments made me smile a lot. Schadenfreude, ain’t it fucking beautiful?
Schadenfreude, or whistling past the graveyard?
That Nashville series could easily have gone the other way.. yet it seems unpossible to imagine this Hawks offseason if they were making all of these moves through a prism of a first-round playoff exit.
by The Deputy Mayor of Rush Street on Jul 8, 2010 3:28 PM CDT up reply actions
It’s schadenfreude because, um, we did make it past Nashville. Are you unfamiliar with the difference between historical possibility and historical fact? Please tell me you’re not still sweating out that 5-minute major.
Man, it didn't have to go down this way....
But no, I’m not actually detached from reality, thank you.
As it appears you didn’t get the point I was making, it’s easy to laugh at whiner Caps fans in the reflection of Lord Stanley’s Cup. But while their fans actually suffered through a soul-crushing first round choke/defeat, we never faced an elimination game, much less getting booted from the first round by a team low in the standings. And then having to deal with the Capocalypse.
But don’t sit there and pretend that being down 3-2 and facing a elimination game in Nashville against a Predators team that was giving us all we could handle wasn’t even a possibility.
(We can still laugh at the whiner Caps fans, and that was some high-class idiocy by the OFB Intern. Schadenfreude is laughing at the misfortune of others. It’s not “there but for the grace of Martin Erat God go I”.)

I've never acted like that wasn't death starred in the face
The Nashville series was hell, and then to follow that up with a 5-1 beat down at the hands of Vancouver, gosh, ask anyone who was at the Bottom Lounge, I was about ready to kill someone (preferably someone named Soupy).
But that was the entire point of my comment: We didn’t go through that experience this past season. Our team won the Cup. We get to look at the other 29 fanbases and enjoy schadenfreude, for the first time in most of our lives. So bringing up the fact that there were some hairy moments during the post-season path to the Cup seems rather like you’re missing the point that I was making, not the other way around.
Unless you have some philosophical objection to schadenfreude itself, in which case, just shut the fuck up.
Schadenfreude.. you keep using that word...
I do not think it means, (quite) what you think it means. (I’ll admit it’s not that far off.)
But maybe you can curse at me some more. And spend your summer laughing at fans of teams that didn’t win the Cup. You’ve got that going for you.
Me, I’ll look back at the miracle moments, and enjoy the party. Cheers.

Is this really an argument on semantics? Seriously, dude, that’s not an argument you want to get into with me. It will be a messy fight, and any victory will be Pyrrhic at best.
As for the meaning of schadenfreude, that is the pleasure taken from the misfortunes of others, then I have no idea what you’re talking about when you say “I do not think it means, (quite) what you think it means. (I’ll admit it’s not that far off.)” If you read my original comment, you’ll see that I’m talking about taking pleasure in the Caps fans’ descriptions of their pain at an early-round exit. Which, unless you have some incredibly nuanced and hyper-accurate definition of the word that has somehow eluded me in my education, qualifies as schadenfreude. Especially since this year, of all years, the Blackhawks did not exit the playoffs, so it truly is others’ pain.
By way of closing, I’d like to say that I enjoy how you patronizingly tried to insult me, while making yourself seem like some arbiter of pure meaning, while also not giving a clarification for how I’m misusing das Wort. You sound like a moron.
I dunno, seemed to me you tossed the gloves down first..
but whatever – coming back at me time after time over me saying something that wasn’t even rebutting your original point? It would be Pyrrhic indeed.
And now I see I’m totally agreeing with you in the other thread, this is no fun anymore. I’m out, the last word is yours if you want it. Here’s one I know we also agree on – Go Hawks.

...
And spend your summer laughing at fans of teams that didn’t win the Cup.
err, isn’t that pretty much the exact definition of schadenfreude?
Sorry, but personally, I’m having some difficulty understanding your argument – so you’re saying that we should sympathize with Cap fans because we could have been eliminated and would then be suffering through the capocalypse sans Cup. But then you say you’re looking at the miracle moments and enjoying the party…so, we should enjoy our Cup win & what it took to get there, but not enjoy the fact other teams lost because we could’ve lost as well? That seems silly – it’s like you’re telling yourself, “don’t fully enjoy this moment because you could’ve not had it”.
I think the point might be to remind some of us
that we’re Cubs fans.
The funny thing is that I could care less about that this summer.
“Lord Stanley’s new address is Sweet Home, Chicago!!!”
It never gets old.
Speaking of things that never get old, did LuonGOAL!!! just give up another rebound???
Everyone dies. It is the only true and lasting justice in life.
well I'm a Cubs fan
and should the miraculous occur, I don’t think I’d spend that winter going “wow, isn’t this great? I should be thankful the Cubs don’t have another winter of futility like those other teams that lost.” I’d probably go around to every person who mocked my love for the Cubs yelling “FUCK YOU HATERS! BWAHAHAHA!!”. It’s not gracious by any means, but isn’t the point of being a passionately loyal sports fan relishing that your team overcame what other teams couldn’t that season? Not sitting back and going “I’m going to hold back some of my enthusiasm because really, it could’ve gone the other way.” That’s for the handshake line. When it’s yours, savor it & all that comes with it because who knows when it’ll come again? (with the Cubs, it’d probably be another century. sigh. Hopefully not as long for the Hawks!)
/shrug. Just my opinion.
Fuck Baseball
Seriously. I have a countdown going for hockey season again.

Du bist ein Shafskopf.
Meeshak used schadenfreude correctly, your honor.

Come on, guys
I don’t think we need to jump on TDMRS for this. He misinterpreted my response as a glove throw-down and responded as many of us would (and have) if we’d missed the SCH-standard sarcasm. It was settled and we’d both decided to move on. I certainly don’t need my back taken care of in this, and the Deputy Mayor doesn’t need his ass handed to him by the SCH community.
Besides, he made a good point: GO HAWKS!
I'm not jumping on him
I legit want to understand his point because I don’t get it. Not all of us are assholes like you meesh. :D
Did you know they make foie gras by torturing ducks?
Who’s the asshole now? Enjoy your lunch tomorrow.
Okay (since you asked)
basically all I was trying to say is that there’s another way you could look at what Caps fans are going though .. not that you can’t laugh at them if you want .. but given our close shave against Nashville – SCUM, Blues, Nucks and other teams’ fans would be having the laugh on us if we went out in the first round, and we’re now having to ‘dismantle’ our team for cap reasons.
After 40-some years of rooting for Chicago teams, and figuring that this version of the Blackhawks has a damn good chance to win multiple cups over the next decade or so, I was thinking more in the “don’t piss off the Hockey Gods” vein.
(Also, during the Towes/Kane/Keith era the Hawks record is 6-1 in games where they can close out a playoff series, but their record is currently 0-1 when facing elimination.)

ah, ok
I get what you’re saying & it’s a valid viewpoint – but it still seems silly & overly cautious to me. I guess partially because I don’t see the point in thinking about “what could’ve been” when I have what I want. (yes, I am a spoiled spoiled child. :D hehe!)
and re: hockey gods, I know they may be fickle and choose to torture me more for my brashness, but for now, I will be grateful for what I got ;)
I empathize with the Caps fans
in this article probably because they aren’t coming across as the asshole fans that support Scum, the Canucks or Blues. It’s those three teams that make me happy that their fans are the ones in misery.
Maybe, just once, someone will call me 'Sir' without adding, 'You're making a scene."
Schadenfreude
I don’t mind Caps fans. Seeing Flyers and Blues fans misearable made my year.
+1 on this
Sorry, I just posted something similar to this. The only real difference are the choices of teams.
Maybe, just once, someone will call me 'Sir' without adding, 'You're making a scene."
I'd be pissed too....
if a team traded Verbeauty to another team that wasn’t my own.
It's the Chicago Blackhawks man...
For 1 cup – I’d mortgage the future.
Sums it up….this author either looked for a reason to hate the hawks, or would rather win the presidents cup instead of lord stanley’s
I can't wait to dive into a pool and end up in a jacuzzi
ahh, but there's the rub
did we really mortgage the future? The LEAFS mortgaged their future for Kessel— as far as I’m concerned, we have most of our first and second round picks in the next few years, and a few more prospects in the system.
And the Cup this year.
But when it was suggested to him that Toews v. Kane seems likely to become a sidebar to every future international hockey tournament, he smiled and said: "I'd like us to win something together, too." -- 2/28/10, so our Captain has said, and so it was done.

AND... the off-season moves
haven’t been completed yet…!!
That’s what pisses me off about DH’s like that. They don’t even have the complete picture and then on top of it, get their facts WRONG.
Just win the next game...!
sorry I didn't clarify
that’s what one of the commentators posted….just agreeing that I’d have given up a lot more to win..i think we’re in great shape for next year and i look forward to another exciting season with my big screen tv and bottle of jack
I can't wait to dive into a pool and end up in a jacuzzi
New Orleans Saints
Mortgaged their future on Ricky Williams (who Jay Marriotti would later describe as a “disgrace to humanity”) and look where that got them… 11 years later… not sure where I am going with this.
Caps fans
Had all their faith in Ovy, Green, and 2 piss poor goalies. With their regular season championship locked in place, they set their sights on a bigger prize. And why should they not? They were the odds-on fav for the cup; their goalie won a shit-load of games in a row, they score more goals than anyone, and they felt invincible…dare I say ‘entitled’?
Their 1st challenge was a bottom-feeder team with a ‘goalie controversy’, forwards that cannot meet the height requirements at an amusement park, the ‘itty-bitty slapshot committee’ (Bergeron) who’s actually worse in his own end than Green, and noted speedster Hal Gill being asked to stop ALEXANDER THE GREAT? Hell no, they thought. Not their team, not this year, and not with their offensive firepower…they’re going all the way!
Then they got Halak’d…
They try to rationalize that they’re the better team than the Stanley Cup Champion Chicago Blackhawks (never gets old does it?) and they try to find weaknesses to make up for their Russian comrades choking, their Norris contender becoming a pretender, their goal-tending becoming more of a suggestion, and complete lack of playing team hockey.
Watching those gawd-awful Mike Green Geico commercials just put salt in the wound.
So they find a distraction; Chicago’s cap. I mean, why would they want to talk about how bad their team is and how poorly coached they were in the playoffs? Why would they want to talk about the ‘C’ on Ovy’s sweater when they can bitch about Toews following Kane on the cover of NHL ‘11? Why would they want to talk about Semin’s ZERO goals when they can talk about Hossa not living up to his contract? Why would they want to talk about Green getting snubbed from Team Canada & the Norris when they can bitch about Brian Campbell’s cap hit? And the list goes on…
In reality when things really count; the Washington Caps are a bad team full of skilled players and they’re reminded every time they see that Geico commercial with Green and Boudreu…and it drives them nuts.
They want to be ‘us’, but they know they can’t. Not with their shit goaltending, shit defensemen, shit coach, and their long-term marriage to Ovy. Ovechkin is a 1 trick pony that was contained in the playoffs by a d-man who skates worse than Sopel…think about that. “Best Player In The World” stifled by a man who skates at the speed of smell.
This is all sinking in for them, and they don’t like it one bit. They’ll never admit it, but they’re gruesomely jealous and will likely continue their early exits in the future.

It's one article that may or may not have been written by a fan
But if you take a good look through all the comments, they pretty much rip him a new asshole and do it with solid facts.
There’s always going to be some moron in any city (probably more than one) that writes this shit just to get a rise out of the readers.
I’ve always maintained that the media (columnists specifically) is here for 2 things: To expound on controversy, or if none exists, create controversy.
It’s pretty much horseshit. WE can move forward knowing Stan is doing the best possible in fixing the cap issues. The core is in tact and once that selfish prick Kovulchuk milks every last cent out of the Kings, Devils or whoever, the rest of the league can finally get down to signings and trades.
NINETY ONE DAYS UNTIL THE SEASON OPENER – YOUR DEFENDING STANLEY CUP CHAMPION CHICAGO BLACKHAWKS !!!
Just win the next game...!
I heard that prick wants 10 Mil a year!
Does he not realize that there’s a cap now? If someone is actually dumb enough to sign him for that much per year, I hope he’s happy skating with the guys who are cast offs from the Disney Ice Show who make 50 bucks a game. What a douche.
"Erin go Braugh". What the fuck does that mean?

The future, the future, the future...
“mortgaging the future to win now.”
I’m pretty sure the front office of the Pittsburgh Pirates ghostwrote this guy’s article. Why win for sure today when you can maybe win tomorrow? Why have stars today when you can have false hope for tomorrow?
All of the commenters (?)
Disagreed with the writer’s viewpoint and I would too. Your building for the future doesnt work when youve been building since you got Ovechkin to lose over and over in the playoffs. 4>0
