Hawks Re-Sign Nick Boynton

via www1.pictures.zimbio.com Thank you sir, may I have another?

See, not everyone leaves!

Cap Geek is reporting that
Nick Boynton has signed for the league minimum of $500K for the privilege of skating on the Hawks third defensive pair and taking a pounding on the PK from the opposition's point shots that would make Carmella Bing wince. While CapGeek is anything but official, this all seems pretty realistic, but we'll definitely update the post accordingly once a more reputable source confirms it.

So much for all of those dreams of Jay McKee.

McClure sadly shuffles over to the corner, with the only loves that never jilted him, Scotch and porn. I’m sorry man, but Boynton isnt too bad. I’m actually ok with seeing some more of Nick.

A bit more mobile and more physical than Sopes, but can he take absorb a slapper, and can he not take dim-witted penalties as he is wont to do?

are you being sarcastic? I thought you were pretty good at English/grammar/usage etc. – especially since you always catch my mistakes :P

Anyway, “wont to do” means “normally accustomed to doing” – so McClure’s asking if Boynton can be like Sopes and 1) absorb a slapper & 2) not take the stupid penalties that we’re expecting from him.

I feel like most people aren’t going to have a problem with this deal – he makes the same money John Scott does, but with actual skating ability. He’s a decent shutdown guy when he focuses himself.

by PDiggy on Aug 10, 2010 8:53 PM CDT reply actions

So is it that the team really wants to be able to carry 23 all year...

or is there still enough cap space for one $700,000-$1,000,000 pickup? Or is it worth keeping some flexibility for seeing what you might want to trade for during the season?

For Boynton, seems that anyone we’d put out there in the Stanley Cup finals is worth bringing back on a minimalist deal. And $500,000 to man the third D-line for the Hawks is going to beat any AHL deal that might be out there.

by The Deputy Mayor of Rush Street on Aug 10, 2010 8:59 PM CDT reply actions

So Boynton becomes Sopes v2.0, now with slightly more footspeed and slightly less bad hair

Like I said on the other thread, can’t complain about the paycheck, and I like what it says about the club that guys are willing to take minimum wage to get their names on a Hawks roster.

by spokeinthebandwagon on Aug 10, 2010 9:04 PM CDT reply actions

Also, I hope that the whole of Boynton’s training camp will be a crash course in how to step in front of a puck eight or ten times a night. If he’s going to be Sopes 2.0, we need more shot blocking on that third pair and Hendry won’t be the guy to give it.

by spokeinthebandwagon on Aug 10, 2010 9:07 PM CDT up reply actions

Very true

And don’t try to be the tough guy and take dumb penalties. If he does both of those he will be Sopes v2

A few thoughts

Boynton back is so-so. He’s no Sopel and I don’t think he’ll see much time on the PK, but he is faster. The thing that endeared me to him is the fact that he seems willing to step up and fight for the team when needed.

The downside to this in my eyes is that one of Hendry/Vishnevskiy will probably wind up in Rockford (assuming Scott plays as the 7th d-man) which is sad considering that they’ve both got plenty of AHL experience and are set to play in the NHL now. I understand that Boynton would probably do a decent job as the vet on the 3rd pairing but it does suck seeing guys who are ready to move on stay back due to lack of space. With Vishnevskiy on the 3rd pair, we’d have a puck-moving d-man on each line.

by Ban on Aug 10, 2010 9:19 PM CDT reply actions

Boyton will be a back up like he was last year

Are we sure

Boynton won’t be the seventh defenseman until/unless Hendry or Vishnevsky proves himself unworthy?

by stanfordron on Aug 10, 2010 11:21 PM CDT up reply actions

I seem to remember people saying Scott can play some F when he signed..

Maybe Boynton is the 7th D-man, and Scott is going to be the 23rd man on the roster as a F/D swingman.

I really haven’t gotten a feel for whether teams typically carry the three extra men for practice fodder / in case you need to scratch a regular / depending on how you matchup with tonight’s opponent.

by The Deputy Mayor of Rush Street on Aug 10, 2010 11:55 PM CDT up reply actions

I like this idea

It makes more sense to me because I think Boynton was very serviceable in the playoffs as a D man and I don’t know that much about Scott.

by whiskeyboy on Aug 11, 2010 12:24 AM CDT up reply actions

boynton over scott

i could see scott being the 23rd man over boynton and having to prove himself more then boynton considering the hawks already know what boynton can do, ya know

by admiralcheese on Aug 11, 2010 12:46 AM CDT up reply actions

I like the 500k

that leaves a little over $2 million to add 2 forwards to the roster. I just hope Boynton doesn’t break his face with anyone’s fist again.

This pretty much means our D is set.

Boynton-Hendry 3rd pair scares me a bit. I think Vish has to make the team otherwise he might be KHL bound. Leddy-Lalonde should now be groomed together in Rockford as the second coming of Keith-Seabrook.

Not to mention that Leddy and LaLonde are both more offensive minded blueliners. I don’t see them on the same line. We’d be lucky if one of these guys turned out to be 80% of the player that Campbell is.

Beach

Does this pretty much guarantee Beach’s spot on the roster for opening night?

by Shooby34 on Aug 10, 2010 10:12 PM CDT reply actions

I think it means there will be the cap space to take him with us

for opening night, if his play merits the promotion. I still won’t be surprised if they decide Beach could use some more time playing regular shifts at Rockford, and make him a mid-season call-up. But it sure gives Beach something to play for in the preseason.

by The Deputy Mayor of Rush Street on Aug 10, 2010 10:26 PM CDT up reply actions

I like this signing for multiple reasons

If Boynton is the Sopel replacement, I’m ok with that, and Boyton is 2 years younger than sopes.

Signing Boyton to such a cheap deal gives the hawks a lot of roster flexibility, whether they use it to sign another forward, bring up an expensive one from rockford, or keep it as a cap buffer just in case.

Boyton looked solid in the last (1 or 2? I think 2) games of the SC finals, which is a pretty damn tough spot to come in to.

This takes the pressure off with regard to rushing along a young Dman who might not be ready.

Ditto for CNS

by Hack on Aug 10, 2010 10:23 PM CDT reply actions

So if what I have read is correct,

the Hawks are left with around 2 mil for 2 forwards. Who on the list of remaining free agents could make the cut, or do we hold on to as much of that cash as possible and bring up someone else from Rockford?

Great move @ the price!

Between this and Turco’s contract we are looking great in terms of cap space for the last few slots remaining to fill. Would prefer Boynton to be our 7th defenseman, but he was very capable for us down the stretch and wouldn’t be the worst scenario to have him on the 3rd line.

by Billy Charlesbois on Aug 11, 2010 4:52 AM CDT reply actions

more delusional than optimistic?

I except Boyton to be at least as good as Sopel at even strength. Sopes was often times a disaster during 5 on 5 play. As others have mentioned, Boynton is quicker than sopes and is more physical.

The only time I expect there to be a dropoff is maybe on the PK.

Ditto for CNS

by Hack on Aug 11, 2010 10:39 AM CDT up reply actions

Sopel did more than kill penalties.

Boynton may be quicker and more physical, but Sopes knew how to be in the right lanes to put himself in the way of shots from the point or the side night in and night out. Boynton hasn’t shown that so far, and that’s what the team needs. Sopel was often the second goalie out there on the ice, sometimes literally (as when he’d step into the crease when Nemo was against the post and protect the other side with shinpads or chest to block crazy slapshots).

I do have hopes that Boynton can learn the same skill late in his career, because right now this team is lacking a shot-blocker on the third pair (assuming that the third pair is Boynton/Hendry). Maybe Hjammer can give tutorials.

by spokeinthebandwagon on Aug 11, 2010 10:53 AM CDT up reply actions

I agree

I said this throughout the season, Sopes was a great shot blocker on the PK, but any time he carried the puck I was on pins and needles. God help us when he had to skate to intercept an opponent. Don’t get me wrong, he’s a stand up guy and great on the PK but I don’t think he’ll be missed full strength.

However they might feel the need to give him a few games down in the AHL to see how he does. I can’t complain with Boynton. Him and Scott will be switching from Pressbox to ice quite a bit.

We hope Hendry can improve on last year and maybe with a full season he can. If he doesn’t then we call up Vishnevskiy. Just wish pre-season would start so we can get an idea and the lineups would be set soon.

Vishy's had around 150 games in the AHL

I think they already know he’s capable of playing in the NHL.

by Ban on Aug 11, 2010 9:21 AM CDT up reply actions

Exactly!

IMO Vish’ will start the season with the big club as will a few other young guys. The reasoning behind this is that Stan & everyone else knows that these guys are the team’s future, and they must become familiar with the game the Hawks play ASAP. I really think that Boynton is gonna be used just as he was last year, and that was as a dependable fill in.

It has to be in the best interest of the organization to get these kids whipped into shape (playing Hawks style hockey) as quickly as possible so the team will know if they are gonna’ be big or busts. Don’t forget that our cap situation is not too much better next year than it was this year. Therefore the team should allow as much opportunity as they can allow for these guys to develop.

Sorry if that was a bit of a long winded rant, I just realized I am extremely hungover!

Vish is only 22 and...........

Dmen are typically late bloomers.

It is possible that his growth could be stunted while playing only 10 minutes a night on the third pairing.

I’m not completely opposed to bringing him up, but it’s not a now or never scenario for Vish, whereas with a guy like Hendry, who is 26 and has never played a full season in the NHL, it’s time to see what he is capable of.

Ditto for Badgerdano

by Hack on Aug 11, 2010 4:17 PM CDT up reply actions

Agree with Hackerar

Plus having 2 other d-men in Boynton and Scott (even though Scott “can” play forward) I just don’t see him being on the big club yet. Also Hendry will be there unless he struggles for a long period of time, but even still he signed a 1-way contact I beleive so I just don’t see how Vish’ would get much time this year. I’ll just wait till the training camp and pre-season starts..

While I certainly agree

with you & Hackerar I still believe it’s crucial that these kids get as much ice time as the team can allow. If the kids are gonna’ blossom we need to have an idea as soon as possible, if they are gonna’ blow we need to know that also.

As far as Hendry goes, you’re correct in this being a make or break time for him. On the other hand I haven’t really seen much of anything that gives me hope for Hendry as anything more than a third pairing at best.

Given that Vish is only 22, but has played so much in the AHL, where he performed very well, he should be given the opportunity to continue his progression, that is unless he craps out in camp. However, given that he has performed well just about everywhere he has played (when he was given the chance) I believe he will continue to get better and better even if it is by only getting 10 minutes a night to begin with (everyone has to start some place).

Either way the team has quite a problem on their hands. Great players already manning the 1st & 2nd pairing really only allows for those up and comers to get maybe 10 minutes a night. So what do they do? Give them those few minutes a night and hope that it doesn’t hurt their confidence, or give them big minutes in Rockford and hope that doesn’t hurt their confidence.
Either way, no moves can really be made unless some room is made on the 2nd pairing which I don’t see happening anytime soon.

If any young defensemen show promise,

it wouldn’t hurt to give them more minutes early in the season and give the vets fewer minutes. Last season was a long one. This season will be too. I wouldn’t mind seeing the big four get a few less minutes early in the year to keep them fresh for the playoffs (required salt thrown over shoulder).

by stanfordron on Aug 11, 2010 6:33 PM CDT up reply actions

Something

will have to be done in order to create some kind of balance that achieves several the goals of keeping “core” players fresh & injury free, development of young players, and above all winning games.

As long as it is not to the detriment of the team, I believe it may be a good idea to do some switching with the defensive pairs on certain nights ( when allowable) so players can get a feel for other players working with them. Of course the same could be said for the forward lines, but for some reason I feel that the D pairings work or depend a lot more on chemistry with the other partner to get in that flow that Seabs & Duncs have and Soupy & Hammer got going last year.

The way Dunc held up last year

including the Olympics, makes me confident his workload won’t go down- in fact, I was just thinking that Biscuit oughtta be north of 25, maybe 26 next year hissownself.

Soup logged some large minutes late. He and Super Contracto should be lookin’ at 23,24 next year.

Goes for forwards too- we were spoiled last year by our top guys logging fewer minutes than their counterparts on other teams- not so this year.

This is what Capopylypse means. Can the boys fill these shoes? Can’t fuckin’ wait!

And that's why

the coaching staff needs to afford minutes for the young guys so they can get out there and learn the tendencies of the veteran players and their ways.

If these kids can’t get the minutes they need to develop they are never gonna’ be able to fill the roles that need to be filled.

And that's why

key, underseasoned prospects oughtta stay where they can get plenty of minutes and develop. Check back in January.

If any of the “supporting cast” emerge, the minutes will be there. Even with the numbers I threw out, there’s 18 minutes of unaccounted D-time and 35 minutes for forwards per night- and no injuries.

I disagree

Toews & Kane are exceptions to the general rule.

Going a bit slower and seasoning young players for an approriate time at a lower level produces much better results. The more normal result of rushing a player along is that we saw with Grant Mulvey or Eric Daze or Everett Sanipass or Ken Yaremchuk – maybe a couple good years, maybe not, but in the end a lot of unrealized potential.

To me there are two things that you are going to have to accept to be a Hawks fan. At least under the current regime.

One, is that the Hawks will spend their money on their d-pairs over spending money on their goalie.

Two, is that the Hawks will error in bringing up a kid a year too late instead of a year too early.

Daze injury - could coming up too young have been a factor?

17 to 21 years ago aren’t fully physically mature. Tossing them into NHL play can contribute to those sorts of chronic injuries that end careers early.

Also, getting 3rd or 4th line minutes (quality and situationally) in the NHL doesn’t bring a kid along – particularly in the old Hawks way, where any typical “rookie mistake” got a kid lots of bench or press box time rather than continued ice time.

Daze was drafted

when he was 18, but didn’t play his first full season with the Hawks till he was 21, and then didn’t begin having back problems until he was 31 from a herniated disc, which more than likely came from one big hit or a bad fall. I work in the health profession and it is very rare for a person to have a “slight” herniation and just let it go. Most people who get a herniation get them fixed immediately. Daze got his worked on 3 times, but was unable to play, it happens.

Not to mention that Daze’s biggest fault was that even though he had the build, he was afraid to play a physical game. If I had to make a SWAG (scientific wild ass guess) I would say he received a big hit from someone or fell awkwardly and that was how his herniation was produced, not from being brought up too soon because that wasn’t the case by any stretch.

Mulvey

did play his first full season when he was 18, but then again you have to look at the era. During those days there wasn’t a big emphasis placed on physical fitness at the team or individual level. So yes I would say he was brought up quickly, but to say that that hurt him I couldn’t say with any certainty.

Vishnevskiy in the NHL doesn't make a lot of sense right now

If he’s going to be here, it’s going to be in a third-pair minutes scenario, wherein his only responsibility would be to not get the team killed when he’s out there. The problem is, his is a high risk game, one which he’s still finding at the pro level which will at some point get the team killed.

It’s far better for him to log top-four minutes in RockVegas and get some power play time than to play sparingly in the show. Same goes for Lalonde and Leddy, barring any long-term injuries in the top four (KNOCK ON WOOD).

All of this has sure struck fear into the hearts of GMs and owners….wait, aren’t they the NHL too?

I just think the whole thing is weird — these contract rules are what both parties agreed to in the CBA and now both parties are doing all they can to circumvent them with these long term, front-loaded contracts. Am I oversimplfying this?

by hawkeytalk on Aug 11, 2010 4:32 PM CDT up reply actions

If the league truly wants to drive the point home

they have the ability to do so. The CBA allows for the office of the commissioner to negate any registered deal if they eventually believe that it circumvents the cap. Now that the standard has been set, it’s imaginable that they may go ahead and disallow those deals.

Essentially, Bettman continues to have the ability to be a total dick in the best interest league continuity.

"You can't negate his deal a year into it"

Actually they could, but to be honest, I don’t think they would in this case. If there was a circumvention of the rules by some form of subterfuge, then yes, I think they not only could but would negate the Hossa and other contracts.

Thing is, there isn’t any “new” information on any of those contracts. What was possibly in violation was plainly obvious at the time the contracts were approved. As such, I don’t think they will be negated, now.

And I too share your sentiment regarding the forthcoming start of the hockey season, however, we do have a first place team currently playing in this town. Therefore I would say that this MLB season has become very interesting while I am also looking forward to puck drop. I’ve also been up for 36 hours straight as I cannot sleep, went on a 4 mile bike ride to try to remedy that, gave up and went to Gin, so please forgive me if I sound condescending and/or “bitchy” to use the parlance of our times.

and the fact that this has been a horrible season, I think it’s been a great year for baseball. Hendry was removed in the playoffs

because Q wanted more physicality and Hendry had produced zero points. Boynton matched Hendry’s point total, and both had two post-season penalty minutes. I think Boynton would do well serving the same role he did this past season, namely biding his time in the minors until Brian Campbell eats dasher and Kim Johnsson disappears.

“Nucks Misconduct ran a poll this week asking if fans would be enraged or pleased if Luongo’s long-term deal was voided. The majority of respondents voted: “Pissed. I think Luongo is going to rebound this year. Re-sign him for as long as possible.”

You'd think they'd learned something over the past few years

Watching their “captain” cough it up repeatedly. And his whiney beyootch attitude towards any Hawks player who dared to crowd his field of vision seemed to seep into his teammates inability to control their emotions as the series progressed. The least they could do is strip him of that title – I don’t know who else they could give it to, maybe Bieksla. Watching him continually run to the refs in order to call goalie interference was quite damning, IMHO. If the Hawks had taken that attitude, they would never have won game 1 against Philly, with that lopsided penalty ratio.

But no game will ever be worse than a Hawks-Wings game years ago when Detoilet scored two goals with under a minute left including one in the very last second to beat the Hawks. I took some South Carolina based business associates to a Hawks game to show them what hockey was all about. The Hawks were playing the Preds who were at that time a new expansion team so I figured the Hawks would surely win that game. I really don’t recall all of the nightmarish details but the Preds scored something like 3 or 4 goals in the first 10 minutes of the game. I hung my head in shame.

I don't understand how Nucks fans

aren’t praying that Lu’s contract gets voided. Considering the current goalie market, if his deal got voided, you’d think you could re-sign him to a 3 or 4 year deal at 5 or 6 per. Would another team really swoop in and offer Luongo 7 or even 6 mil per year?

What happens if, in 3 years, Lu is still hasn’t been able to win a cup? You’d have another nabakov situation; sure he’s still a good regular season goalie, but the team would like to go in a different direction.

Now from a Hawks fan’s perspective, I certainly don’t want Lu’s deal to get voided because that would mean Hossa’s would going along with it.

I don’t think it would matter that Hoss has already played a year. The bigger precident to set would be voiding a contract that the league had previously approved. Lu and Hoss would both fall under that category. I couldn’t see the league voiding Lu’s and then letting Hossa’s slide because he was a year in. I could be wrong though.

I see the term “beta” thrown around quite often, directed at the other commenters as an insult.

Never been on that board

I think “beta” is localised to the fitness board, ‘cause I’ve never seen it before.

Anyway, it’s hard to explain 4chan’s purpose, because I’m not really sure if it has one. It’s mostly stuff being posted “for the lulz,” but sometimes the users (particularly on /b/) band together to fight something that threatens net neutrality or online anonymity or internet censorship, like the Google/Verizon agreement or the recent Australian attempt at internet censorship.

by Germware on Aug 12, 2010 3:13 PM CDT up reply actions

Thanks for the explanation. I think I understand a little better now; it seems the kind of thing you need to just spend some time exploring in order to get it.

Yeah

it’s not something you really can explain. If you’re feeling particularly daring, you should go on /b/, where essentially anything goes (as a result, it’s very NSFW); some of the posts are not for the faint of heart, but if you ever see an “epic thread” thread, it’s completely worth it. Example of an epic thread (SFW).

They also occasionally band together to fight other things.

Like Scientology, as in the time that /b/ decided that Scientologists pissed them off and so they took down the network at most of the Scientology centers worldwide for a couple of days, then staged in-person protests over a period of months.

Or animal abusers, as in the time that /b/ got pissed off at a couple of teenagers that posted a youtube video of themselves abusing a cat. Within hours, /b/ managed to track down the culprits, provide local law enforcement with an address and phone number for both home and work, and make sure that the cat in question was promptly adopted into safe hands once the county animal control seized it from the abusers.

Or AT&T, as in the time that AT&T decided to summarily block 4chan on all their American networks. The 4chan denizens got mad enough to DDOS the whole damn ISP until AT&T quickly revoked the policy.

The *chans (4chan is only the best known, there are several more) are rightly known as the dregs of the internet, but they occasionally take it upon themselves to do impressive things.

Niemi's day with the cup

So what happened with that? Looks like the cup’s tour of Europe is over and it’s coming back to the States and of all the European Hawks (or former Hawks), Niemi was the only one who didn’t get it. I tried to google this but nothing of relevance came up. Do you think it’ll go back to Europe again to visit Nemo in Finland or is he just not getting his day with the cup?

by hawkswin!hawkswin! on Aug 13, 2010 7:25 AM CDT reply actions

Why wouldn't he get his day with the Cup?

It’s possible he’s spending his day with it in the US, though I very much doubt that. Either the Cup’s coming back to Europe or he’s already had it & just didn’t have any press there. He seems like a low-key kind of guy, so I wouldn’t be surprised if it was the latter.

Just goes to show.

Most of the time a draft position doesn’t mean squat. Just off the top of my head I remember Zetterberg going in the 7th round, and I’m sure there are a slew of others that turned out to be pure gold after being drafted late. Then again there have been quite a few who have turned out to be pure shit after going in the top 10. As Forrest would say: “You never know what you’re gonna’ get”!

And beyond the draft ...

What happens in the farm system doesn’t necessarily translate to the NHL either. Apparently, Duncan Keith wasn’t all that stellar in the minors. He had speed but was rather unspectacular. The Norris Trophy says he turned out better than projected.

I agree with you

but remember that Boynton was an All-Star. The reason he’s on League-minimum salaray now is because the rule-changes from the Lockout made him much less effective at his game, which would now be considered holding & interference. The same (kind of) goes for Duncan Keith; before the rule changes, he wasn’t a fantastic prospect because the game was more physicality-based, but now that it’s speed-based, he’s the Norris trophy winner he is today.

Turco at $1.3

Niemi’s situation in Chicago was tenuous since the day Stan knew he could get Turco at $1.3 million. At that point, how high could the Hawks have conceivably been interested in gong on Niemi? Maybe $2 million tops.

To suggest the day after the Cup championship that Niemi’s market value would be $2 million or less, well, this would have been considered low by just about everyone.

If the Hawks stick to the "Detroit model",

as it’s being called, of hockey franchise management I can’t see this happening. Unless Niemi completely fails playing elsewhere.
I’m saying this purely from an economic perspective. If he has even modest success elsewhere in the league (and I expect he will) he’ll have priced himself out of the Hawks salary structure once again.
If he were to struggle for a few seasons elsewhere he might be available cheap, but would the Hawks want him at that point as a reclamation project?

by nextgame on Aug 16, 2010 4:34 PM CDT up reply actions

I have to agree.

He was being led by a greedy agent.

Pressed on whether he had declined a three-year, $8 million contract offer from Hawks general manager Stan Bowman that would have allowed him to stay in Chicago and establish himself on a Cup contender, Niemi asked to look ahead not back.

“I’m not going to comment on that,” he said.

If that report was false, he could have easily said so. Apparently the Hawks were willing to pay $2.6 (average), probably sliding upwards in years two and three. That was a BAD move, Niemo.

the whole, “he was being led” angle. I’ve said this before (so I’ll keep it short here), Niemi is just as responsible for this mess he’s in as Zito is. Turning down 3 years at $8m after Nabby went to Russia? Come the fuck on, Niemi.

by Katherine215 on Aug 16, 2010 12:38 PM CDT up reply actions

I wouldn't say his agent was greedy

in so much that he was aware that the way Niemi played last year may have been the best Niemi would ever play, and needed to get as much as possible. Niemi needed to have faith in his ability and say I’ll take a cheap 1 year deal and prove I can be the netminder of the future for this club and get a fat contract next year. Alas that wasn’t the case.

II Can Finally Die Happy Now!

by Tuke on Aug 16, 2010 3:44 PM CDT up reply actions

Zito may have been aware that his player needed to cash in..

but he also needed to be aware of the developing goaltender market, and that his player was a RFA that wasn’t actually on the market while all the big deals were being handed out.

Agreed that as arbitration time drew near, both Zito and Niemi should have been able to read a spreadsheet on CapGeek. But we’ll see what deal he gets now.

Niemi says no to Europe?

I wonder why he has ruled out playing in Europe as an option.

‽ ⅋ ‽

by K_Dog on Aug 16, 2010 9:54 AM CDT up reply actions

It is so sad

I mean, did he and Zito think that the Hawks wouldn’t have another plan ready to execute should they go to arbitration? It was probably already over by then in Bowman’s mind; they were already prepared to go in a different direction once the contract negotiations went to arbitration. Nemo/Zito really overestimated the Hawks attachment to their cup winning players — which should have been evident given Ladd, Buff, Versteeg et al. That’s a big-time “tell”.

Poor Niemi not only didn’t get the arbiter’s number — the Hawks announce Turco in the same breath and he is left standing there looking like a doofus.

by hawkeytalk on Aug 16, 2010 10:34 AM CDT up reply actions

Zito did a real disservice to Niemi - he totally misplayed this (non-)deal.

The goalie bubble was bursting and Zito should have seen that happening

10 to 1

Nemo would take $1.3M right now to play here next season. Too bad.

I wonder how many players watched the Niemi debacle and then dropped Zito as representation

by Johnny Lava on Aug 16, 2010 11:59 AM CDT up reply actions

Not sure it's about an attachment to their cup-winning players..

it was about the math of the salary cap. But misunderstanding that distinction was Zito’s first mistake.

It took a few weeks for us (including myself) to get a handle on what could, and could not be done in keeping the non-core players. Which is fine for drunken message board posters, not so good a quality in a player agent. It’s like Zito shared Tallon’s lack of understanding of cap management.

Ultimately the player hires the agent, and makes the decisions about how to approach contract negotiations. If his top priority was staying with Chicago, he could have signed the (rumored) $8m/3yr deal and we’d have then lost Hammer to the Sharks’ offer sheet.

But even if Niemi was a neophyte who let his agent sweet talk him into thinking he was worth $5m a year, it’s still on Nemo for allowing Zito to proceed forward, and completely misread the market for netminders. As an RFA, the Hawks had the ability to prolong the negotiation until all teams had shot their cap wad on UFA’s.

by The Deputy Mayor of Rush Street on Aug 16, 2010 12:40 PM CDT up reply actions

I hear you

But the Hawks’ willingness to let go a number of popular, albeit non-core players (plus the crumbling goalie market) should have been a big tip off to them both. They really miscalculated.

A harsh lesson in sports business economics 101 for Niemi.

Sure hope it works out for him wherever he lands.

by TKHO on Aug 16, 2010 10:28 AM CDT reply actions

Would it really be hard to implement a system where, in advance, I could say, “Hey, Ticketmaster, I’m interested in these 5 games, in this order. I am interested in any tickets in the 300 level. Please look to see what is the best ticket available and let me know, then I’ll make my order.” Instead, we can’t select any ticket in a given level, only at a given price range or part of a level. We can only choose one game at a time—sucks to be you if there aren’t any tickets left after waiting 10 minutes for Ticketmaster to get back to you. All this for the privilege of being charged an extra 20 bucks on top of the admission price by these assholes.

Really looking forward to seeing the city (hoping to catch a Cubs game as well but will have to wait for the 2011 schedule). Tix are in section 300 something so they are not the best but who cares. Plus the Hawks will be here in DC this year so I will get to see them twice.

300 level tickets are the best ones

for the price in my opinion. you can see the game a lot better than sitting lower. 200 level are supposed to be good too, but those are out of my price range, so i can’t speak from experience. :)

that's basically my plan for the season

with the exception of the home opener. I just want to see the banner raised. After that, I can watch the rest of the season from my couch.

But when it was suggested to him that Toews v. Kane seems likely to become a sidebar to every future international hockey tournament, he smiled and said: "I'd like us to win something together, too." -- 2/28/10, so our Captain has said, and so it was done.

Were you able to get home opener tickets?

I tried right at 10 and was shut out, then tried a few other games here and there and could only get SRO.

Even though I loathe Stubhub, there are actually some decent deals on there right now. I just can’t swallow paying $12 to ship the tickets, and then another $11 for a service fee.

$23 can buy me a fifth of Gentleman Jack instead.

nope

I said fuck it and got the best deal I could get on StubHub. It’ll probably be the only one I shell out that much money for this year, though— I managed to get called up for the partial plan so I’ve got 8 regular season Wednesdays covered, and the rest will basically be “road watches”.

But when it was suggested to him that Toews v. Kane seems likely to become a sidebar to every future international hockey tournament, he smiled and said: "I'd like us to win something together, too." -- 2/28/10, so our Captain has said, and so it was done.

especially knowing that the Organ I Zation will release thousands of tickets to brokers shortly. I can’t get 3 side by side but sure as shit know that in a couple weeks i can buy a whole F’n row in the 300’s to the opening game

I always thought those brokers

were STHs who just bought full rows of seats and then sold them off for profit, in which case the Hawks could probably do a better job policing how many tickets STHs get. (Because really, a whole row for one person? Who are they, the Gosselins?)
