Hawks Sign Fernando Pisani
Yeah, I don't get it either, but Ryan Rishaug of TSN is reporting it.
Obviously a depth move, and terms have not been released, so whatever. On the plus side, with Versteeg, Byfuglien, and Burish gone, this at least gives us a new outlet for our own special brand of puerile humor. Pisani is useful as a third or fourth line winger when he's in the lineup- but that's been the problem over the last few years. Dude grows a MEAN playoff beard, though, on a team already stacked with red beards.
How this affects Kyle Beach being on the opening night roster remains to be seen, as well as Marty Turco's choice of number, as Pisani rocked 34 in Edmo.
EDIT: Rishaug follows up stating it's one year and one-way, but no money out yet. I'll shit my pants if it's anything north of $600K.
EDIT EDIT: It's 500K.

Rishaug is saying 1 year, 1 way
but no numbers out yet. I’d be surprised if it’s over $500k the way these depth signings have gone, but who knows? He got $2.5m last year.
But when it was suggested to him that Toews v. Kane seems likely to become a sidebar to every future international hockey tournament, he smiled and said: "I'd like us to win something together, too." -- 2/28/10, so our Captain has said, and so it was done.

Pisani may not wear #34 with the Hawks ...
… since that number was just assigned to Ivan Vishnevskiy shortly before the Fan Convention. Though, I suppose, Vish’s number could be “un-assigned” …
I’m more curious about Turco’s number. There’s still nothing up on the Hawks website, and I am kind of considering buying a Turco jersey. Has anyone heard anything? Is he waiting for Huet to vacate #39? Will he flip his #35 (like Khabibulin did) and wear #53?
Anyone have any inside dope?
I'm sure the players...
will sort out the numbers worn. Clout, money and favors will no doubt influence all decisions made…just like politics.

For those of you wondering who the hell he is
Here’s a loving tribute from Copper&Blue at the end of April, when they figured he’d leave the team next year. Money quote:
Even the most devout lovers of the splendid #34 would call him a terrific, if not quite elite two-way forward, somebody who could shut down another team’s best players and pop the occasional goal himself but aside from one glorious spring never the finest player on his team. But he resonated in the way that a mere star never can, more than Dustin Penner or Ales Hemsky possibly could, partially because of that mortality and partially because of that Glenn Anderson-esque performance when the team needed him most.
The word “clutch” is an epithet in these parts sometimes, dismissed as the result of small sample sizes and misremembered moments blown up into trends. To hell with that. Fernando Pisani was clutch. I don’t know what else to tell you.Take ‘clutch’ with a grain of salt — this is the Oilers we’re talking about — but he sounds like a guy who could play good depth minutes for us. FWIW, the Oil fans never figured out a nickname for him either.

definitely feels like
bowman is making a lot of small gambles and then hedging his bets against each other. In lieu of the Ladds/Versteegs/Byfugliens of the hockey world, he’s getting a couple of young guys and vets who are hungry to prove their worth to the rest of the NHL, and creating a situation where they’re going to have to compete for spots, which is hopefully motivation enough. Not hard to imagine that he’s pitching them a contract with the Hawks as some sort of stepping stone for a better contract after this year.
But when it was suggested to him that Toews v. Kane seems likely to become a sidebar to every future international hockey tournament, he smiled and said: "I'd like us to win something together, too." -- 2/28/10, so our Captain has said, and so it was done.

"Second Chances"
is sort of the theme of some of these signings. Turco, Pisani, Skille, all of which have taken pay cuts to play on a team that, let’s face it, has a great chance at winning the cup again. I am expecting them to play with loads of hunger and ambition, because they’ve never quite played on a team as exciting and novel as the Hawks right now. The same logic sort of applies to Hendry and Boynton, who I expect to improve. Especially the former.
I'm content with this method of adding role players to the team
even though it’s too Disney for me. Haha. Whatever. Maybe it’ll work.

it’s league minimum and he seems to be a great team guy. I’m not seeing why it’s so bad in your opinion….?
by Katherine215 on Aug 19, 2010 11:23 PM CDT up reply actions
Because he
is unable to play so often. I think they could have gotten someone else for that money who would be able to play every game if needed. This guy hasn’t played anywhere near a full season since 06’ I think, and with money tight and the team’s depth shot to shit I think there had to be someone else that could have filled a need.
Therefore, I think even the minimum 500k is too much for a good locker room guy as I think that will probably be the least of the teams problems this coming season.
I honestly hope I am proved wrong though.
II Can Finally Die Happy Now!
Our depth is not shot to shit
Are we going to be as deep as last year? Probably not, but we could be in much worse shape with all of the cap issues we have.
How would you like a job where, every time you make a mistake, a big red light goes on and 18,000 people boo?
You're right.
However, I’m basing my opinions off of our depth last year. So when compared to that, I would say our depth is pretty shot. You are correct though in saying it could be worse.
II Can Finally Die Happy Now!
close enough
he played 77 games in 2007. 56, 38 and 40 in the last three seasons.
His production fell through the floor last year, but perhaps he’ll step it up on a good team? Anything north of 25 points would make him a very nice pick-up and when your team has cap issues, sometimes you need to take chances on certain players.
I'm not sure 25 pts is even realistic for Pisani
Maybe closer to 20?
I’ve read a bunch of articles about him over the past few days and everything states that he just doesn’t create offense and is weak 5 on 5.
What they do say over and over is that he give 100%, is a good character guy, is great on the PK, has a natural knack for the puck, and seldom make defensive mistakes. They actually suggest that he is one of the best PK specialist forwards in the league when healthy. I don’t know if that’s true or not, but I hope so because that was a hole we needed filled – and the price is right Bob.
Lord Stanley's new address: Sweet Home Chicago!
by ChicagoNativeSon on Aug 20, 2010 8:48 PM CDT up reply actions
Gotta' agree with ya' CSN.
We did need help on the PK, and I think he will fill that need very well. I may bitch and moan about this signing because for some reason I’m still concerned about the amount of offense we lost during the purge, but you are correct in saying that he is very good defensively and seldom makes mistakes with the puck.
However, I still maintain that there may have been someone else that could have been picked up for around the same money that could contribute even a little all around the table rather than in just one area as a specialist. My rationale for this mindset is that our defense is returning intact and I’m hoping that with last season’s experience, guys like Hammer & Hendry or Vish will get even better on the PK.
Sure Pisani is a good character / locker room guy (however you want to rationalize his signing), but is that something we are in need of?
Like I stated in an earlier post though, I hope I’m wrong, but I just don’t see this as a good pick up.
II Can Finally Die Happy Now!
Valid points, but
Who is out there that you would have preferred they sign at this point? I’m not challenging your opinion, but I honestly don’t see that much better that would be available at that price. I wouldn’t expect any more Turcos out there, IMHO.
I would've been liked
Asham for the 700k that Pitt got him for. Pisani is probably here as a PK partner for Bolland, a role that Asham wouldn’t really fit in. It’s really not an apples to apples comparison, but as far as even strength goes, Asham would’ve been a nice 4th line pick up.
Ditto for Badgerdano
25 Points!!
Holy Shit you’re an optimistic one aren’t you. No way does he score 25 points let alone something “north” of 25.
Every year his TOI has gotten smaller as well as his production, and as I work in the health care industry, and haven’t heard of any new breakthrough drugs for UC I really don’t see his numbers getting any better than last year if he makes those at all.
II Can Finally Die Happy Now!
so what you're saying...
is you expect Pisani to shit the bed, so to speak.

We're forgetting who Pisani will be for the hawks
We’re not looking for another Kane, we’re looking for a versatile 3rd/4th liner who can move the puck into the zone, drop back, play some D, and be Sopel on a kill. Pisani MIGHT fit that job! We’ve got a pretty good team and we’re currently playing with the casino’s money (well, change left on the floor).
When I first read this, probably like most fans, I was remembering back to when we exclusively signed has-been’s and last chance players. It’s a different office. Speaking of, any news if Kim Johnsson is alive this year?
I think I heard he's taking the season off?

when you have something like UC, you lose all sense of embarrassment regarding your ass. remember dajuan wagner who used to play for the cavs? he had it too, i guess, but he had to have his colon removed entirely. crohn’s is actually pretty similar, although, imo, way worse because it involves the entire digestive system. don’t know how david garrard does it. they are both debilitating, incapacitating diseases that most people think are just like bad ibs. these guys are really heroes in a way that ron santo is a hero for people with diabetes. thanks a lot for your kind words.
Have you tried clay?
Hey Sulley,
I know it sounds weird but have you tried drinking clay or taking it in pill form? Something like TERRAMIN from California Earth Minerals or similar product? I have heard people say that it has helped them with colitis.
i haven't
but i’m kind of reticent to try anything outside of what i’m on right now. in order to control mine, i have to take mesalamine 3 times a day and imuran once, which is basically a chemotherapy drug that suppresses the immune system. honestly, anything is better than steroids. When i’m flaring up, i lose 40 pounds and turn white as a ghost, all while fighting the notion that i might never come out of it. but i’ll definitely ask my doctor about it. Thanks!

I don’t know the rationale behind it. But I do know a jumbo blue line would give Kopecky a lot more surface area to trip over.
‽ ⅋ ‽
besides everything in the NHL
w/ Bettman is that he is trying to increase scoring. You win a faceoff in the middle I guess would create more chances/one-timers, more open slot area? Im not sure but from what I’ve read or hear it’s all about more score. He would like the games to be 12-10
2009-2010 Stanley Cup Champions
Chicago Blackhawks
Just think how many times the Canucks could hear Chelsea Dagger then.
Lou’s nightmares would become more frequent.
How would you like a job where, every time you make a mistake, a big red light goes on and 18,000 people boo?
I could see a wider blue line being easier to make call offsides with
also, the blue is deemed to be in whatever zone the puck is in – so once the puck gets intothe offensive zone the whole blue is then in the offensive zone – a wider blueline effectively adds a little bit of extra space to the offensive zone (once the team is in the offensive zone).
Preparing my psyche for the coming Capocalypse
Confusion will be my epitaph.
a wider blueline
gives a bigger degree of error in entering the offensive zone with speed.
I’ve always thought a much bigger blue line would eliminate the trap style defenses…

We’ve got a 21 man roster (12F-7D-2G) with just over 1.5 mil left in cap space. I’d say that’s more than enough wiggle room.

it's not that bad...
there’s a few good eateries downtown, more specifically on the Rockford Register side of the river (State St.). I’ve not felt unsafe in my trips there.

Sam and I talked about this last night, and the FifthFeather points it out in their post today, Fernando Pisani is playing an absolute MAX of 50 games, one way or the other.
With that level of cap room, the Hawks can afford to carry a 22nd man, specifically Beach. If a forward sits, it’ll likely be some of the bordering prospects like Dowell or Bickell. If Beach is brought up, it’s not going to be to watch from the press box.

But when it was suggested to him that Toews v. Kane seems likely to become a sidebar to every future international hockey tournament, he smiled and said: "I'd like us to win something together, too." -- 2/28/10, so our Captain has said, and so it was done.

I totally agree
and very much appreciate the assistance! I did the SCH one, if you don’t mind finishing the Hawks one.
And Chi, i’m impressed with the links at the ready!

How about adding...
Best GDT thread? I just read through a few old ones that were quite hilarious.
Best zinger? Or,
Best joke on an SCH member? I remember Chi got me pretty good on April Fool’s Day, then there was that time someone greened all the comments except for meeshak’s, and that time someone greened all the comments in Trixie’s fanpost about proper use of the rec button. I wonder if they ever figured out who did that?

Speaking of GDT..
How many people actually have NHL network(?) and will be watching the ‘Raising the Cup’ replay of game 6 tomorrow night? Raising the Cup has been terrific, especially seeing that dickcheese Pronger lose repeadetly against Ladder and those awful Carolina jerseys.
I personally missed the comcast replay but we should start up a game 6 thread tomorrow night and get drunk like its time for hockey again. WHO IS COMING WITH ME

I'm somewhat confused by the categories
I don’t want to mess up the fanpost, so I’ll ask here: what’s the difference between “best goal” & “best assist”? Is a goal an individual effort?
The specific example I have in mind is Byfuglien’s Game 5 SCF PPG where all 5 ‘Hawk skaters touched the puck in the space of about 5-10 seconds. Does this come under “best goal” or “best assist”? Buff didn’t do much individually, but it was a fucking sweet goal.
personally I feel like that could maybe fall into Best Assist?
The way I see it, I’ll nominate best assist for things where the playmaking was more important than the goal-scoring?
(Tweets @ChiBlackhawks and blogs at Blackhawks Down Low.)
by chiblackhawks on Aug 19, 2010 2:19 PM CDT up reply actions
agreed
and maybe a great pass or a great keep-in that led to a goal? I don’t see why a play couldn’t have a best goal AND a best assist nominee, right?
by Katherine215 on Aug 19, 2010 2:21 PM CDT up reply actions
Best catch?
gotta be Hossa…
Not all those who wander are lost.

Hossa for best play w/o helmet
Loved that segment vs. Van. The guy didn’t flinch one bit – old school.
I nominate Seabs for best keep - in
I think it was Seabs when he took it in the skates and went flying the other way, yet they scored about six seconds later. Runner – up is Keith, even though his attempt failed, the guy lost his entire front row of teeth in the attempt. Reminded me of Mags taking pucks in the face all the time. Best assist? Yikes, maybe Towes, that guy was feeding Buff all the time, it seemed.
ok, i'll add best keep-in
there’s some good ones in the playoffs – Sopel keeping it in for Hossa’s Game 5 goal, Soupy keeping it in for Kane’s Game 6 goal. Good idea!

OK!
Everyone on this site that suffers from UC, we understand that it is a horrible disease that causes great pain and suffering, and trust me we know it is not something to be made fun of. However, given the circumstances, grant the jokers of SCH a little leeway for a day or two and it too shall pass (no pun intended). After the jokes have been made and everyone has had their laughs all will be back to normal.
II Can Finally Die Happy Now!
For those of you who are saying he’s a little bit Ladd and a little bit Madden or what have you, please keep in mind that this is a fellow who could not keep a roster spot on the worst team in the NHL last season. And a fellow that the worst team in the NHL did not want back.
That being said, you’re paying him league minimum, and a comeback story is always a wonderful thing. I would call this a ‘maybe we’ll get lucky because we can’t afford anything else’ signing. Not a bad move by any means, but you’re not adding something likely to be useful.

we were just excited about the new potential for joke memes
what with the likes of Burish, Eager, Buff, Steeger, and Sopes gone. The only one left to make jokes about is Kaner, and sometimes that’s just too easy. just like Kane.

Asham
Asham just signed with Pittsburg for 700K.
Frankly, Asham is worth more than Scott-Pisani combined at less pay. Wonder why the Hawks weren’t interested.

i thought for sure he was going to sign or more than that. maybe he didn’t want to come here….????

Back then, though, signing Asham at 700k was not all that different from taking on Gomez’s contract. It was 500k or nothing, cause Niemi was still in our sights. Not much bargaining room then.
www.mjt.org
I think he's trying to say
That before Niemi walked, we could have only afforded 500k for a player like Asham, which may have been part of the reason management didn’t go after him, since they knew he’d probably demand a bit more.
I am so starved for hockey

Question: Weren't they supposed to release a 6 DVD set of the complete SC Finals?
That would cure my boredom quite a bit…

:It will be tough to duplicate. The Blackhawks have been the story of the NHL’s off-season after purging a number of players from their championship roster—including goaltender Antti Niemi and Toews’s former linemate Dustin Byfuglien—to stay under the salary cap.
Toews expects it to be a little strange when the team reports for training camp next month with a fair amount of new personnel. But he’s excited for the challenge.
“It’s just about getting those new guys on board,” said Toews. "We need to make them understand what the locker-room culture’s all about and how hard we work and what it takes to be a Blackhawk.:
Yes, this IS good news.

Confusion will be my epitaph.
What I wonder is
will the team hesitate to pull the trigger (i.e. look to trade, ship to Rockford) on any newbies that don’t get with the program?
I wonder how much slack new players will get or how much patience the coaching staff will have, before heads roll if newcomers play doesn’t measure up?
