My Moment with the Cup (now with local news video) Courtesy of Adam Burish
Watching via computer, reading stories online, and listening to reports on the radio about the day the Hawks came back to Chicago with the Cup, I was jealous. "Dammit. Today is the kinda day I really wish I still lived in Chicago," I grumbled to myself. But alas, I'm a resident of Madison, WI. Obviously, I was excited and joyous beyond words the night the Hawks won it all, but the following day, seeing all these people have their cool moments celebrating with the Cup at various bars & restaurants, again, I was jealous. I really hoped I'd get my moment with the Cup the year my Hawks won it. I thought about possible times I could drive down and see it in the Chicago-area...but, I remembered, it should appear in Madison, as luckily for me, Adam Burish called Madison "home".
I found out when his day with the Cup would be, and knew immediately, "It's on Wednesday, huh? Feels like that day is gonna be a sick day." Even when I had a moment of pause thinking I shouldn't take Wednesday off, as I actually just took Monday as an actual vacation day. But, my wife, bless her freakin' heart, said promptly, "No. This is once in a lifetime. We're going to see it." The girl is from fucking Omaha, and never watched a single Hawks game in her entire life until three years ago...and now, she's the one practically pushing me out the door. I married the right girl. The Cup was at the Kohl Center in downtown Madison yesterday, and we waited in line for about an hour. Burwood was signing autographs at the table just before the area where the Cup was, and we did get a couple signatures. We told him congratulations, and when he handed our autographs back to us, I said, "Good luck in Dallas," he replied, "Thanks." And as we started walking over to the Cup, I said, "Take it easy on us, okay?" It looked as if he paused for a second not knowing the identity of "us" in that statement (we were donned in Hawks gear, I assumed he would know what "us" meant) Perhaps I should've thrown in "us Hawks"? Meh, whatever. Doesn't matter. My time with the Cup was here. So, myself, my wife, and our 10-month-old daughter, had a great moment...
Pictured: My wife, 10-month-old daughter, and my stupid giddy ass...
Now, I'm jealous of my daughter, I mean, she got to sit in the damn thing! I'm kidding, obviously, but what a story for her for the rest of her life, any time she sees it..."I sat in that!" After the picture was snapped, I reached to get her out, and planted a kiss on the Cup. Mission fucking accomplished! I got to see, touch, kiss, and sit my daughter in the Stanley Cup two months after the Blackhawks won it. To add, we were shown on the 6p and 10p news on the local Madison CBS channel. And apparently, although I have yet to see it, according to a buddy of mine, we were on CSN Chicago 'Sports Nite' as well.
To say this has been a memorable summer, is an understatement.
Thanks for letting me share my Stanley Cup moment, SCHers...hopefully we will all get more chances at more moments with the Cup!
Here's the report from Channel 3 in Madison...

Great story!
I love the little Hawk outfit on your daughter too. How cute!
How would you like a job where, every time you make a mistake, a big red light goes on and 18,000 people boo?
Then she could say "I shat in that!"
Congrats HawkVision. Awesome story! Very jealous!!!
It’s also great to see what other SCHers look like (cliff, you can please disregard this statement)

I saw the picture and was like
“OH NO! That baby can never win the Stanley Cup now!” Then I saw that it was your daughter. Awesome story

Great Documentation
for your daughter to prove that in the future she’s not a bandwagon fan.
Maybe, just once, someone will call me 'Sir' without adding, 'You're making a scene."

if she were over 18, Burish might have been iterested in arranging for a somewhat different Cup sitting moment

Thanks for the nice comments everyone!
I really can’t wait until my daughter is old enough to really recognize that she grabbed a seat IN the greatest trophy in sports.

I didn't see you there.
We were at the Burish table at about 11 o’clock. I would have noticed some dude putting a baby in the Cup! LOL, I"m shocked they allowed you to do that. I wanted to carry it over my head but they said “uh, no.”

We were behind you in line then
We didn’t get to it until about 11:15-11:20 or so. According to some people who were standing by the Cup (media, Cup handlers, etc) we were the first to put a baby in the Cup that day. I mentioned to one of the Cup handlers as were walking over to it that I wanted to do that, and he simply said “Sure.” When I got the the side of the Cup, I was still holding my daughter, when that same guy said, “Are you gonna put the baby in there?” Once I heard that, without hesitation, up she went.

Awesome!
Congratulations, great pic and very cool you were on the news as well. My friend brought his son to see the Cup and unfortunately he will one day get to see pictures of himself crying in front of the greatest trophy in the world.
Very Cool! I was there too.
Great story and very cool to be on the news. Your daughter looks great up/in there. Wish I could have put my little one in there, but he/she isn’t quite ready yet. Due in October!
Once I’m back home, I’ll get the pics on here somewhere.

Too bad you were stuck in MN.
It was a great thing seeing the Cup and Burish in the Kohl Center.

No, it was simply very poor reading on my part.
I’m pretty sure last week Preacher said he was not going to make it to Madison because he was going to be stuck in the Twin Cities. That’s what happens when I try to read and comment while I’m being distracted by things in the office. Somehow I missed the “I was there too” part. LOL

ah, i see.
the “stuck in the Twin Cities” person was me, which is why i thought it was a reply fail. one small benefit of being incredibly self-centered, i suppose.

Wow
How did I mix that up? Senior moment I guess.

I haven't been near the Twin Cities in a looooong time.
And I’ll have my own Cup visit post up here soon. Still messing with the picture.

Where the Cup went after the Kohl Center
I’m sure some of you have already seen this but… — from the top of the Eiffel Tower to the musty air of the Kollege Klub.
Only the Stanley Cup.

Yeah
I heard about him bringing it out to a few establishments on State Street for a good ol’ time. If I were the younger, drunken goofball-self, of yesteryear, I would’ve had this type of experience with the Cup…“Gaaaah! Lemme drink from iiiiiiiit!” But, the older, the married-with-a-child, not-as-big-of-a-goofball-self, got this type of experience…which I think is still pretty nice. I’ll take it.

I can’t tell you how many brain cells I destroyed in the Kollege Klub (KK as it’s known on campus.)

I was there also!
Burish was a great sport. I wished him well in Dallas and told him we’d miss him in Chicago and took a couple of pictures of him. My wife and I had our picture taken with the Cup which she decided will be our Christmas card picture this year. I have a # 37 signed Hawks sweater and a # 16 signed Badger hockey cap. It was day one of an awesome five day vacation in Wisconsin.

Much coolness!
Congrats and thank you for sharing, that’s an awesome pic you need to frame and hang someplace important. :)
The sun never sets on a badass
That's the plan, Trix
We have materials waiting, but our current home doesn’t have room for a “Hawks wall”…our next home (which we’ll most likely move to in late fall/early winter) will indeed. I have a Stanley Cup Champs pennant, the ESPN Mag cover photo of Hossa, Kane, Toews, & (shrug whattya gonna do) Huet, which, God-willing, I plan to have signed (by at least Hossa, Kane & Toews) at the next convention (or maybe sooner, who knows) and have framed…the Sun-Times and Trib front pages, framed…and this picture. It’ll be a nice shrine.
