Huet To Play In Switzerland Next Year?
If you haven't noticed - it's a bit of a slow news time around here. So when you see this random story posted on Twitter - I guess you have to talk about it. Just as a disclaimer - I don't know anything about 20 Minuten Online... they could be the Swiss version of Eklund for all I know. Speaking of Eklund - watch this.
Back to the story though - I took a year of German in college but was pretty damn horrible at it. So since we're not PPP - I simply had to use the old stand-by of google translator. The article is still pretty hard to understand but it seems to say Huet has been loaned to the Swiss team Fribourg-Gotteron for next year. Fribourg-Gotteron plays in the Nationalliga A... so at least it'll be the top tier of the Swiss league.
The Hawks need to get rid of Huet's contract somehow - playing in Europe is definitely one option and perhaps the most appealing for Huet.
UPDATE - Kuc just weighed in on Twitter now too - he reports that Huet's agent says the deal is not yet done... meaning I guess that there's at least a little bit of truth to this.
ANOTHER UPDATE! - Quotes from Huet's agent, Stephen Bartlett. Seems as though there are "a lot of hoops to go through and approvals that have to happen here". So for right now this is anything but final, as the Twitterverse gets its collective panties in a wad with screams of circumvention.
UPDATE (ALBUM VERSION) - James Mirtle realized he had been vanquished by me on Twitter and penned this piece regarding the Huet story with reaction from Bartlett as well as deputy commissioner Bill Daly.

it’s the Mental Health Parity Act. It’s insurance related.

that's different
and how the federal preemption under the act applies varies from state to state i believe, based on the existing state law. But you’re right, it’s more about funding coverage.

by puppetmasterp on Aug 24, 2010 12:42 PM CDT up reply actions
I think it's more determined
by plan design, isn’t it? if your group health plan offers mental health coverage, it has to be equal to the coverage offered for medical and surgical benefits. there are state requirements for plan design, so I guess you could look at it as the states requiring a minimum.
it’s definitely different than what germware was referring to though; I didn’t mean to imply they were the same idea.
by Katherine215 on Aug 24, 2010 12:51 PM CDT up reply actions
it sometimes depends
on if pre-existing state provisions were more or less protective. if more protective, an insurance company might try to argue that the federal provisions preempt application of the more expansive state ones. it’s really just a question of scope. at least it was a few years ago when the act was passed, i’ll admit i’m behind in keeping up with how the act has been interpreted more recently.

Generally
states can require more than what the feds require, so long as those more comprehensive requirements do not adversely impact interstate commerce.
In those instances, the pre-emption principles apply (likewise, the states cannot act to water down the federal regulations).

Nothing illegal in loaning out to Europe is there?
I thought I read on many sites that this was a valid way to get him off the cap. Are people just pissed because their teams couldn’t get their bad contract players to agree to this?

It's not circumvention of the rules...
… it is jumping the gun a little bit though. You have some red tape to go through. First, Huet has to be waived. That is pretty much a formality at this point.
Once he is waived he is free to be loaned to any “affiliated to the NHL team” including teams in Europe.
Yes they haven’t resigned their agreement. They are disagreeing on the costs paid to teams when the NHL steals a player. However, I don’t believe there are any problems with loaning players the other way.
It’s not only NOT circumvention, btw, waiving a player is specifically in the CBA as a legitimate way to adhere to the salary cap…
And yes the Hawks pay his salary like they would if he was in the AHL.
Agreed with all points here
it’s just funny that suddenly people are up in arms about it. This was done to Nylander too, but no one complained. I’m thinking some people just feel slighted because they’ve been waiting to see the Blackhawks implode but surprise surprise, somehow Bowman’s managing anyway.

Dale…all right, but ( and I could be wrong here too )…I thought the IIHF and the NHL had an agreement on this, and the only league where there is no agreement is the same one that has no agreement through it’s Hockey Federation…the KHL and Russia.
I don’t get the Twitterati though…idiots.
Of course he can be loaned. Its the same as the AHL. Any other team gets a shot at picking him up before.
Its in the CBA, FFS!
IIHF and the NHL had an agreement
Yes, they do but not all of the European countries agreed to it. Some did, some didn’t, some created their own agreement with the NHL.
You have to look at each individual country to determine the current status…
full disclosure
this is absolutely the case.
I happen to think that the salary cap itself is a bad idea, but I think I hate workarounds like this even more. I don’t get the point of a league that claims to want to implement parity but really has only succeeded in putting hurdles in front of some teams and seeing if they can come up with a way to get out of it.
Ultimately, though — yes, I’m just pissed that the Hawks GM has managed to make the best of a bad situation and salvage a still very good team while the overloads of my team seem unwilling to fire Jeff Finger into the sun.
But I might be blinded by their insisting Vesa “.874” Toskala was a starting goalie as late as January.
Unabashed fan of the surprise 2012 Stanley Cup champs
not to be a dick,
but isn’t the point of a cap to put hurdles in front of teams that are running away from the pack in order to create parity?
by blackhawkeyes on Aug 24, 2010 7:29 PM CDT up reply actions
i thought the point of the cap was to create parity by relying on market forces to ensure that no one team can stockpile all the talent. The “intent” of the cap is to control costs for owners, and a byproduct would be to spread parity (which is theoretically good business for all the owners since they can all sell hope)
In my experience all that’s happening is taht some teams are getting poached of talents for financial reasons (Ottawa, Buffalo, to a certain extent Chicago, Toronto, and a bunch more in recent years) while others manage to get creative to find ways around this (minimizing cap hits by going crazy with term length being the most recent examples)
Maybe it comes down to the skill and ingenuity of individual franchises, but to me it just appears that the league OKs certain workarounds but not others.
Ultimately yes, there are a lot of sour grapes in my viewpoint
Unabashed fan of the surprise 2012 Stanley Cup champs
Seems like sour grapes to me, also.
Part of it is that there’s no explicit transfer agreement between the NHL and any league other than its direct feeders, so it’s a gray area that’s being exploited.

No one is "getting away with anything!"
This is SOP for the league. If the player has a NTC or NMC this will not happen, but Huet’s contract does not have these provisions, so he would prefer to play in Europe. The players want these options as much as the owners. It’s called flexibility…
Huet also claims he would renegotiate his deal if the CBA allowed it, but all contracts are final and fixed. Most teams do not even contemplate these moves because of the cost. This is NO BARGAIN for the Hawks since they still must pay the large salary. Because of the cost most teams don’t consider this option.
Huet’s NHL rights remain with the Hawks, but he will be a NONROSTER player, like many other players, just a very expensive one. But for the team, NO CAP HIT.
Many other teams have players that may wind up in the minors, for example Wayne Redden of the Rangers. Don’t be surprised if he is in the minors this coming season…he has been an expensive bust.

Salaries of players with a similar GVT rating to Campbell
Following are players within 1 GVT point of Campbell for last year.
Brian Campbell $7,142,875
Dan Boyle $6,666,667
Kimmo Timonen $6,333,333
Brian Rafalski $6,000,000
Sergei Gonchar $5,000,000
Mark Streit $4,100,000
Matt Carle $3,437,500
Ooooooo!
Nice stats! So, he’s overpaid, but not ridiculously so. I yield. He’s worth about 5.5 mil. Sorry I hypothetically low balled him.
There are only two seasons in Chicago; Hockey and Construction.
looks even better
when compared to other D-men signed the same year as Campbell:
Wade Redden ($6.1)
Sheldon Souray ($5.4)
Campbell is a contributing key to the team, unlike the above.
Over-look the length of Campbell’s contract, unless you want to feel bad again.
Are you trying to say
that longer is not always better?
/rimshot
But yes, it’s the length of the contract that has made it so onerous. I also believe that Soupy struggled mightily (between the ears) attempting to live up that contract in it’s first year. Last year he was markedly more relaxed, and it showed. There were few that hated him more in 08-09. I ate a lot of crow last year when he came around.
Our Cup.
this confuses me a little
you disagree with stanfordron who thinks Campbell could be replaced for less, but you think he’s worth about $3m.
$3m d-men players:

- Jordan Leopold
- Toni Lydman
- Colin White
- Ian White

oh, okay then
It doesn’t make sense to me that you think d-men are overpaid by that much, but it definitely puts your comments in perspective, so. The confusion has lessened.
FWIW, I think the trend is going towards paying more for d-men than goalies, so the increase in salaries makes sense. I don’t know what other method besides market value could be used for evaluating d-men salaries either. Isn’t it the only one that matters?

I know that market value dictates price
but the owners have really driven that price up in recent years. Brian Leetch.was making as much money as Soupy. and yes I know Leetch’s heyday was 10 years ago and you have to account for inflation, but damn.

Oh hey! Look! If the WHOLE DAMN MARKET is overpaid, then of course our d-men are.
Overpaid based on the market? Those words don’t even make sense together. The market is what determines who is ‘overpaid’. Supply and demand, bitches. If there’s enough demand for the skill, then no one is ‘overpaid’ when supplying it.
OTOH, if one ascribes more to typical supply-demand economics and less to bandwagon bridgejumping, maybe it’s not so much that the whole damn market is overpaying as it is that Hawks got ourselves a gen-u-wine elite puckmoving d-man for about the same amount of money that other teams are currently paying for similar gen-u-wine elite puckmoving d-men.
Wait, that makes too much sense. Sorry, move along.
by spokeinthebandwagon on Aug 23, 2010 6:32 PM CDT up reply actions
I'm saying
Brian Leetch >>> Brian Campbell, and yet same money in less than 10 years. I’m not saying that salaries aren’t going to rise overtime, I’m saying that the NHL is in trouble because the owners are driving the price higher than they should naturally go via talent. The same thing is happening in all sports, (especially baseball) and I think all owners are pricing themselves out of the market in this economy. Salaries are driven up, therefore ticket prices, concessions and everything is driven up and people can’t afford that.
All I’m saying in a nutshell is while Campbell is a great player, and an important part of the team, he is overpaid by at least 2 Mil.
There are only two seasons in Chicago; Hockey and Construction.
Cap
but NHL is capped to save owners from one another. One can over-spend so much. Am I missing something?
Cap wise a team can only spend so much
but with front end loaded contracts like Hossa ($7.9 million) and Keith ($8 million) along with dumping Huet’s salary, the Hawks’ payroll is a little over $65 million but their current Cap number is $57.9 million.
Maybe, just once, someone will call me 'Sir' without adding, 'You're making a scene."
I agree, cap is restrictive, but still allows some over-spending – but only so much per team. It appears that they are going to better police the long-term dodges.
The NHL will have to do something
I’ve been figuring out some of the payrolls of different teams. The Canucks payroll is $67 million this year and that’s without a contract being dumped.
Maybe, just once, someone will call me 'Sir' without adding, 'You're making a scene."
overpaid by 2m is a more acceptable stance
than overpaid by 4, so.
And I see what you’re saying re: the owners pricing themselves up and actually do agree with you. The cap’s not really done anything to save them from themselves so far, but eh. That’s the inherent faultiness of the CBA, and quite honestly, a different topic of discussion altogether.
(Tweets @ChiBlackhawks and blogs at Blackhawks Down Low.)

you don't think he's worth
at least $5m? After all the inflation for defensemen this year, and with Hjammer making $3.5m and Soupy having nearly 8 years experience on him?
I agree he has a tough cap hit, but he’s proven to be pretty darn important to the team’s success, hasn’t he?
by Katherine215 on Aug 23, 2010 5:14 PM CDT up reply actions
I think $5M
is about right. Maybe a bit more in this year’s market.
Based on what Dale posted above
The mean looks to be about $5,250,000. So yeah, he’s probably overpaid by about $2M, but people just seem to so easily forget how bad we sucked when we signed him and that the year before we couldn’t sign anyone from the free agent market.
That being said, if our younger puck movers seem to be developing decently this year, I would be all for trading Soupy after next season if someone will take him.

Just watch the last 30 seconds of game 6 OT, and you see what he brings to this club.

IMO
Agree completely that we were completely different without him. But I contend that it was because we substituted his minutes to Sopel… who had become the human sloth. The speed delta between those two might be the greatest in the entire league. Soupy is a terrific player, but at $7.1MM he costs us either another talented forward, a better third D pairing and/ or a namesake goalie. Which still kills me.
"I too was shocked at what a different team we were without him (Soupy)
That isn’t totally fair to be honest. When Campbell went down Seabrook got hurt and KJ died. If KJ hadn’t died I’m thinking people here would have a totally different point of view on Campbell.
Also, three things happened when Campbell came back in the playoffs.
1. Sharp was moved to Center
2 The Hawks brought the forwards back to help in clearing their zone
3 Campbell played about 10 minutes.
It seems Campbell got all the credit for the turnaround when in fact, I thought he had the least impact of the three changes.
To be honest, Sharp at center let the Hawks concentrate on Legwand. I still think this was the most important key to the playoffs.
Johnsson wasn't here long enough
for his absence to be missed. we really only ever had Keith and Campbell for puck moving defensemen; if we’d had Kim all season and lost both 51 and 8 at the same time, then yes, I’d agree it wasn’t just Soupy. But we had Kim for 8 games – we missed the idea of him and his ability to potentially compensate for a hurt Campbell. People here have a totally different point of view of what a puck moving d-man means to the Hawks with the absence of Campbell and Kim being unable to replace him.
Personally, i think Campbell’s return also helped Keith a lot. he was struggling trying to do it all while on the ice and Campbell took back more and more of that load. Campbell’s return also moved Buff off D and paired 2 and 7 back together at about the same time (right? or was that after game 1?).
I’m not disagreeing with your other points, but it’s hard to say the emotional lift of a guy coming back early from a really serious injury didn’t also add a ton of motivation and focus to the team.

Campbell’s return meant Buff could go back to playing forward. I think that had the biggest impact. Through no fault of his own, Buff was a liability on defense. Once he was moved back to forward he became a big asset on offense.

On a slightly different note ...
… it looks like the Hawks don’t consider Kyle Beach to be a realistic candidate to break camp with the big club.
To wit:
Just this morning, on the official website, the Hawks updated their active roster with, presumably, every player who has even a passing chance at making the club. Note the link:
http://blackhawks.nhl.com/club/roster.htm?location=/roster
The active roster contains the likes of Nathan Davis and Ryan Stanton (long shots, AT BEST, to even dress for the Hawks this season … let alone break camp), and yet Beach is still relegated to the now much-smaller list of what the team considers “prospects”:
http://blackhawks.nhl.com/club/roster.htm?type=prospect&location=/prospects
This would seem to indicate that, in the minds of the Hawks’ top brass, Beach will be spending the year in Rockford.
Im not sure the Hawks decesion makers ever look at the website roster
Im picturing Bowman looking over the shoulder of a neon-green sunglasses wearing web-developer at the UC. “I don’t want anyone to have unrealistic expectations. No way he makes the club after pummeling that euro-kid at prospects camp”

I know they try to keep the site
as updated and accurate as possible, but I agree – I wouldn’t read too much into it. On D, they have Leddy listed but not Lalonde and I think Lalonde has a (SMALL but) much better chance of making the team than Leddy. The new guy Pisani isn’t listed either.

The Swiss Club
has announced that they’ve already released their current starting goalie, Sebastien Caron, to play in the KHL. Link here.
Our Cup.
I posted an article from from Le Dauphin the day after Huet day with the Cup
In the article it seemed pretty apparent that he knew he’d be playing Europe (but couldn’t announce anything). Good for him.
Question. If we loan him to Europe and he played well there, could we theoretically have him back for the playoffs as backup if things didn’t pan out well with Turco or Crawford (more specifically Crawford)?
Lord Stanley's new address: Sweet Home Chicago!
by ChicagoNativeSon on Aug 23, 2010 2:29 PM CDT reply actions
In theory, yes
He’d have to clear re-entry waivers, though, wherein a team could get him for half price, which would be far more palatable to some teams and might lead to him getting claimed.
Chicago Blackhawks - 2010 Stanley Cup Champions
Things have changed forever, we're the Ramblin' Boys of Pleasure
So he would still have to clear waivers during the playoffs?
It would’ve still been a good way to let him loose even if someone picked him up, but unfortunately we still get the cap hit right?

"waivers during the playoffs"
The “Playing Season Waiver Period” shall begin on the twelfth (12th) day prior to the start of the Regular Season and end on the day following the last day of a Club’s
Playing Season.
So the question is, “does the Club’s Playing Season include the playoffs?” Foley has always implied that it doesn’t…
He'd probably have to clear re-entry waivers
Same as if he were playing for Rockford, so if anyone else picked him up we’d be on the hook for half the salary.

What about the cap hit?
I believe Huet has 2 years left. So, for next year, if someone picked him up on re-entry waivers, do they incur the full cap hit, does that team take on half the hit and we take the other half, or does that team take half the cap hit (we take no hit) b/c they’re only paying half the salary? I’m assuming they pay half but take on the full cap hit. Which isn’t bad proposition for a team looking to skirt the league’s cap floor.
by EamusCatuli23 on Aug 24, 2010 10:18 AM CDT up reply actions
He's back on the books for the summer - and this would have to be repeated (or him be bought out - or retire)
the half salary albatross is if we attempt to clear him through waivers coming back up and someone claims him
Preparing my psyche for the coming Capocalypse
Confusion will be my epitaph.
Re-entry waivers.
If a player is claimed on re-entry waivers, each team pays half the salary and each team takes half the salary cap hit. And that is for the entire remaining contract meaning both years.
Of course this is hypothetical in Huet’s case since you would have to be 5.6M below the salary cap in order to try and bring Huet up during the year.
Im not worried about this year
but, in the highly unrealistic scenario we try to call him up for the playoffs this year (bc of no cap hit), or close to the end of the year (where the cap hit would be minimal b/c of proration) and some team claims him, we would be stuck with a 2.6 mil cap hit for next year, right?
by EamusCatuli23 on Aug 25, 2010 9:13 AM CDT up reply actions
As far as I understand what "Season" means...
There is a re-entry waiver if he is called up during the regular season. So yes, I don’t think there is any chance of that happening.
However, there isn’t a re-entry waiver for the playoffs. So he could be added to the playoff roster.
Next summer he is part of the team again for the summer. This is because all one-way contracts during the summer count against the cap. This is regardless of where they played the year before; NHL, AHL or other “loan.” This means he takes up the 10% overage that is allowed in next years preseason.
Then he needs to get waived again to go back to either the AHL or Europe for next year.
It looks like your right (see page 223 of the CBA)
the Hawks would be on the hook for half the remaining money under Huet’s SPC and it would count againt the Cap
Preparing my psyche for the coming Capocalypse
Confusion will be my epitaph.
yes, but...
i’m going off of what i remember, but for this loan to work, he still has to clear waivers (same as if he went to the ahl). so i would assume that he would have to clear re-entry waivers to be brought up by the hawks. i could see him being claimed at $2.6m per year and sticking the hawks w/ the rest. especially if the hawks half counts against the cap (i’m not sure if it does or doesn’t).
I think it does
But I’m not 100% on that

Today is a great day to be a part of the Huet Hater Fan Club
I know everything in sports these days is about class. This guy is classy, that guy is classy; it’s a race to see who’s the classiest. Respect is the other big one. “Gotta respect ’em though.” Usually they’re tied together, you get respect becaues you’re classy and so Huet is classy and this should never happen to a classy guy. For some people being classy is enough, but not me. My favorite non-hawks to watch were always Vebeek, Sissyrelli, Hunter, Hextall and the like. My all time favorite non-Hawks hockey moment is Gino Odjick sucker punching Eric Lindros in the face for no good reason other than for being Eric Lindros at the wrong place and at the wrong time – not something a classy guy would do. Anyway, Huet has a lot of class, sure, but he stunk. He stunk yesterday, he stinks today, and he’ll stink tomorrow. Right as we speak he’s probably flopping around on the ground some where. He lost his job in consecutive years: once to a guy who lost his job to him and once to a zamboni driver. In fact, it’s realy a hallmark to this team’s defense that we won the Stanely Cup in spite of Huet’s best effort to count the tiles on the ceiling of the United Center from his back during NHL games. I did my part to pay his salary the first two years and I’ll even be helping while he’s not even playing for the team. In other words, good riddance to one of the worst Hawks signings of all time!

in which both Huet and Niemi each played a couple of good games then stunk up the joint? That’s the reason we had a goalie controversy. Well, just a few things ...
One, I don’t think posting on a message board is really kicking somebody when they are down. It’s not like I’m sending certified mail saying he’s a piece of garbage. I’m merely posting my opinion, which is that a guy’s good personality doesn’t detract from the fact that he was a horrible signing for this team, mostly likely among the worst of all time.
Two, I certainly don’t wish him any ill will. I just dont’ want him on the Hawk’s any more.
I don’t understand how everybody loves this guy. He cost the Hawk’s 22 million over 4 years. Not only does that affect the cap, but it also affects how much it costs to go to a game. My question to Huet fans is what would it take for you not to like a player on the Hawks? Who do you not like that was on the team last season? Or is it just a blanket I like every Hawk policy? Clearly, an embarrassingly large salary and being benched for back to back years doesn’t do it, so what will? First degree murder? Exposing themselves on the #36 bus? Being governor of Illinois?

He played all the years of his contract and he even took the job back from Huet. I guess the fact that we had to sign Huet in the first place is an indication as to how bad he was, but he was also on some shitty teams. Bobby Orr was just a publicity stunt, if not a downright conspiracy, and at least some tabloid headlines came out of the Fleury signing. All we got with Huet was him sitting on the bench with his head down.

Even if Khabby was a worse signing than Huet ....
Simply the fact that there is a discussion to be had about parsing the degrees between the two indicate that Huet was not a good signing by any means.

Bobby Orr?
from Wikipedia:
Orr subsequently signed with Chicago, but his injuries rendered him too severely hurt to play effectively, and, after playing in only 26 games over the next three seasons, he retired in 1979. Famously, he never cashed a Chicago paycheck, stating that he was paid to play hockey and would not accept a salary if he was not playing.
I’ll give you Fleury.

Orr = Class
No question about it. Still not a good signing, as McClure points out.
39 years of pain vaporized by one OT goal. (1971 loss to Habs)
rumor had it the league sort of pushed it
Orr was the poster boy star of the league and the various sinnanagins of his agent (Eagleson) were just coming to light – it appearing that Orr was essentially bankrupt due to Eagleson’s misconduct. It is rumored that the league pushed for one of the solvent teams to sign Orr to that last deal to give him some money to retire on.

Truly unbelievable.
"....we have to find a way to win. And good teams do that."
Tomas Kopecky May 29, 2010
Didn't they also sign Doug Gilmour back in 1998???
I agree with McClure about those being 3 of the worst signings in Hawks history, but I would also throw in any star that was past his prime when he came here. Martin Lapointe would be up there for me, but I was really never a Martin Lapointe fan during his career. To each is own I guess.
"Make the bastard chase you, he will follow."
If they had signed
David Gilmour instead, would Khabby have had to ask permission to use the design on his mask?
Our Cup.
I think
Fluery wins this as the worst, because signing him also meant that they couldn’t re-sign Tony Amonte. I seem to remember the team at the time claiming they signed Fluery because Amonte wanted more money than Fluery, yet Amonte signed elsewhere for $500K less and said the team wouldn’t negotiate with him.

Definitely one of the worst trades in Hawk's history ...
if you track the draft pick from the Sedin brother to McCabe to Karpotsev, it’s a tragic mistake. Clearly there have been worse players in Hawk history than Huet. I think you're willfully misunderstanding a lot of people for the sake of argument.
I don’t think many people LOVE Huet, but they understand that he had streaks of great play. It’s not like every single game he shit the bed and depended on his D and high scoring games to win.
and you can say that his signing was terrible, that’s your prerogative, but I disagree if only because I’m a big believer in cause and effect. maybe huet being the scapegoat saved other players from being ragged on by the media and breaking down. maybe by dealing with huet’s huge salary we had to pick up turco who will lead us to the cup again. maybe we just end up paying a lot for a mediocre goalie. either way, my point is that the signing isn’t in a vacuum and his being on the team affected the blackhawks play
by blackhawkeyes on Aug 24, 2010 7:44 PM CDT up reply actions
Its actually you that's just wrong
Niemi had the worst performance for the winning goaltender in the SCF in exactly 30 years. (Sorry, I had to use “statistics” to figure that out.) If the Flyers had won, Niemi should have been given strong consideration for the Conn Smythe. The only reason we ended up winning was because he was only slightly less horrible than Philly’s atrocious goaltending. And if you don’t agree with that, you didn’t watch a single game.
541 goals. 1467 points. Stanley Cup. Hall of Fame. All hail our man Stan.
I'm not exactly sure how ...
Neimi being bad in the playoffs makes Huet good. Wouldn’t that actually make Huet worse because he lost his starting spot to a goaltender that went on to have the worst run of a Stantely Cup winning goaltender in 30 years? I didn’t say anything about Niemi being good, I thought they were both mediocre. However, mediocre at 800k is much more digestible than 7x that amount.
by Billy Charlesbois on Aug 24, 2010 12:00 PM CDT up reply actions
Wrong,
You have gotten this one wrong, and now you must go sit in the corner and re-watch all of Huets games.
After you are done, re-watch all of Niemis games.
Watch the D in each of the games. Really watch them.
The Hawks won and/or lost each game based on how good/poorly the D played.
I personally liken it to soccer, the goalie is there to attempt to stop a score, not to save the day.
When you are relying on your goalie to “save the day” your D has pooed the screwch and they get a ruler to the backs of their hands.
If you want the extra credit on your make up test, go back and watch both goalies games, and this time focus on the goalie.
Watch them out of order, and then write down for each game which game was won/lost by the goalie. If you are unsure, call it a “push.”
Worst signing of all time? I choose not to take the time to list for you the signings that were worse than Huets. LARGE list. The names upon it are purposely left blank as an exercise for the class. (hint, can you spell ABC?)
As far as money, how much is the Cup worth? I think the Hawks paid the perfect amount last year, and that includes Huet.
To paraphrase Dennis Miller, Of course that’s just my opinion, you could be wrong.
Last but not least, Mr. McClure…Please don’t hurt me, I was nice!

One of the reasons I still like hockey ...
Is it’s still mostly a stat free sport. You got your goals, your assists, and your goals and assists. Few goalie stats and you’re done. All the charts and stuff people come up with about where they scored the goal and ice time against blah blah blah. That’s why I don’t feel inclined to come up with some algorithm to know that this guy was awful for two solid years. This guy couldn’t keep his starting job on a team with excellent defense. God forbid he was in Atlanta or Edmonton. If this guy was on any other team he’d be the butt of jokes on this message board, but because he happened to be on a cup winning team when he was horrible has given him the benefit of sentimentality; saving him from going down as a huge Hawk embarrassment.
And as far as worst blackhawks’ signings go, I think losing your starting job two years in a row and then getting paid NOT to play on the team for the remining two has to rank near the top of dung heap. It’s at least in the discussion with Lapointe, Fleury, Gilmour, and Aucoin over the last 20 years.

There are metrics for everything! Choosing not to use them…with out stats, all you are using is the eye test. In my experience, the eye test is statistically unstable.

Just a few things ...
Wins don’t mean as much in the NHL anymore. There were only some 6 teams that were under .500 last year. I’m not completey sure, but I think the current system is that you get one win for showing up for the game, three or four wins if you finish it, and 13 to 15 wins if you win, depending on the shootout score and punt, pass, and kick competition.
If he wasn’t as bad as I think, how did he lose his job two consecutive seasons? Has that every happened to a starting goalie in the NHL before? Maybe to Osgood? And everybody resoundly agrees that guy stinks and he’s shouldered his team to like three championships!

A goalie needs to avoid soft goals, reliably make the 'oughta stops' and a very good one also occasionally make a "wow" save
That’s really all there is to it.
Huet had some trouble with the avoiding soft goals part of it.
Preparing my psyche for the coming Capocalypse
Confusion will be my epitaph.
I think that succinctly says it all ...
The only thing I’d add is that Huet often looked very silly letting in the soft goals. At least Leightenon (i’ve already forgotten how to spell his name) looked like he was going to be in the right place at the right time when Kane knuckled that final goal by him. When somebody said Huet was standing on his head, it was much more likely that he was literally on his head than making save afer save.

Stat free sport?
just read this for a while during the season.
Verstig, gmh, et al will prove you wrong
Right handed people live, on average, nine years longer than left handed people.
I understand that people have come up with stats ...
but I personally don’t find them all that useful. I’d say hockey fans as a whole aren’t as interested in the stat aspect of the game and certainly don’t follow them as closely as baseball and football. I think the fluidity of the game makes it hard to attach meaningful stats, whereas baseball and football the constant starts and stops makes it easier to classify, quanitfy, and attach a meaning to the number. And although I appreciate people tracking where all the goals were scored on the ice during a particular playoff series, I can probably guess wihout even watching it that most of them will be closer to the net rather than further away.
by Billy Charlesbois on Aug 24, 2010 11:44 AM CDT up reply actions
I see
Because you don’t find stats interesting then hockey fans as a whole aren’t as stats driven as others? Good to know you’re the absolute bellwether.
I really wouldn't interpet my comment ...
to mean that I am imposing my will on the hockey community to eradicate stats from the game. Consider it a general observation that baseball and football, mostly as a result of the huge popularity of the fantasty versions of the sport, are much more stat heavy and the fans are more stat conscious. If you you read a post on the White Sox blog they are basically speaking another language. While the posts here usually mention about the players performance through observation and some basic corsi information thrown in at the end. I’m sure there are stat people in hockey, especially those who play fantasy hockey, but I personally don’t think it’s as much as baseball or football.
That being said, I still think the stats are goofy and unhelpful in most sports, no matter what the level of popularity. Am I really the last old school guy on this site? Who loved Dale Hunter and hates stats that I can’t understand without knowing some correlative?

Stats in hockey
Well considering I do a lot of fantasy sports I think it’s all about the same thing.
Goals/touchdowns
rushing yards/assists
Yards after catch/points
Defense/save %/GAA
I know this is your opinion and this is mine. I think football may just be more “popular” because it’s the biggest sport in America. Baseball is also popular, but given the nature it’s just seems like it’s based on popularity. I’m not nearly as detailed in stats as Vertig or GMH but I can see your point.
2009-2010 Stanley Cup Champions
Chicago Blackhawks
I don't disagree with you ...
that the popularity of the other sports is why their stats are more ubiquitous in our society than hockey, but Basketball is more popular and I don’t think it gets the high emphasis on stats as hockey does. It’s pretty much still points and rebounds per game, nothing like WHIP, VORP, SLURP, GULP, SNAP, and POP (alright, i made up those last three). I think the reason is it, like hockey, is more fluid so it’s harder to track. There aren’t as many benchmarks like yards or bases to track things with. Nobody’s going to track how many completed outlet passes Campbell had last year versus his incompleted ones, and so on.
In other words, I think it’s the nature of the game itself that keeps the emphasis on stats lower rather than the lack of popularity (although I think that does have something to do with why we don’t hear about it anyway).

This time with a link to Mirtle’s reaction to the story.
Chicago Blackhawks - 2010 Stanley Cup Champions
Things have changed forever, we're the Ramblin' Boys of Pleasure
Interesting nugget
Huet’s agent, Steve Bartlett, said his client would have been willing to renegotiate his contract to stay in the NHL, something that is not currently an option.
"His goal was to stay in the NHL," Bartlett said. "If there was a way he could have, he would.
Score one for the CBA!
Let's be careful now
If the ability to renegotiate is innate to the CBA it may be at the mercy of GMs who would threaten players with trades lest they re-price themselves.
I can see it being used as a threat
but in this case it’s just reality. There were no alternatives.
I wonder if we’d see players renegotiating their contracts with an NTC for the year following the renegotiation, just so they wouldn’t get doubly fucked.
Go jump in Toews Lake.
Aubrey: old German for king of the elves. Huff: English for...huff.
Ugh.
This coupled with the Niemi article and commentary has me a little miffed, oh yeah except for the whole winning The Cup thing.
Hopefully with Turco and Crawford we can go a season (and off) without having a goalie fall over and throw up all over themselves on (or off) the ice.
I liked Huet as much as I can like a French dude, but he was getting paid too much to play the way he did. I don’t get all the idiocy and whining about sending dude to Europe since it apparently works the exact same way as dropping him to the AHL. Let the dude enjoy better food and hotter women while he gets paid a lot to do not so much. Strike that, it’s in the German portion, there aren’t as many hot chicks there.

Speaking of goaltending ...
… Marty Turco has finally decided what number he will wear with the Hawks. He has chosen #30, leading me to wonder whether he’ll be the first Hawks goalie since Eddie Belfour to wear #30.
At any rate, it is now safe to buy those Turco jerseys.

Good luck, Huey.
I hope this works out for him and he gets to play in a place that’s happy to have him. I know he didn’t work out for the Hawks because of the damn cap, but he’s too nice of a guy for me to hope that he’s buried in the minors forever. So I hope he shines in Europe, and somehow claws his way back to an NHL spot with a team that can use him.
The Frenchman stood us solid in goal for half a Cup season. I’m glad he has his name on the chalice, and hopefully whatever team gets him after us will treat him better than the bandwagon did well.

OT - is SBN/SCH acting weird today?
it marked all of my comments read when I hadn’t read a lot of them yet :(
I said it somewhere else as well, but I think people shit over Huet too easily. Is he overpaid? Hell yes, but so are most players that get a big deal (yeah yeah cue Luongo bashing). But if Huet was on a team that wasn’t in as much cap trouble as you guys, I doubt there would be any question about shipping him off to Europe/burying him in the minors.
"Playin hurt, baby that don't faze me. I don't got time for pain. The only pain I've got time for is the pain I put on fools who don't know what time it is!"
Not to mention
Huet’s the kind of goalie who needs to play games in order to stay good. Q mismanaged the fuck out of him this season in that respect, especially around the Olympics. On another team, he’d probably get more games than he did this season & maybe get back into his rhythm.
I wouldn't blame Q for it at all.
It seems like there is a lot of history being rewritten here. Huet is not a very good goalie. He was not good at positioning himself. He was not good at rebound control. He was not good at puck-handling. That is the trifecta for bad goaltending. While Niemi was not stellar in these areas either, he was better than Huet and was young enough that he had more potential upside. Huet is what he is. He is not going to get better.
by stanfordron on Aug 24, 2010 11:49 AM CDT up reply actions
Talk about revisionist history!
Huet’s former teammates were quoted in Blackhawks Magazine as saying he had good rebound control and they always knew where the puck was going with him. He had better positioning than Niemi, but I can’t comment on a comparison to other goalies. Puck handling was not a strength, but it was not horrible.
Huet plays better when he plays consistently – see November/December. I think Q started mixing things up a bit when Huet had a couple mediocre starts in January and then Niemi got about 4 or 5 starts going into the Olympics and then also coming out. After Huet got sick and had the shit-tastic performance in CBJ, he never really got a start again. Personally, I think Q tried to give it to Niemi earlier in the year, Niemi didn’t really seize the day then (around the Olympics time), and only really started playing consistently well again around April. Q is not the only person at fault (obviously Huet is too), but he was not very patient with either goalie and had a quick hook for them both, especially in the winter. This is all obviously my opinion, though.
by Katherine215 on Aug 24, 2010 12:04 PM CDT up reply actions
Where did I rewrite history?
I didn’t say that Huet was great this season (he was good at points, bad at others, as was Niemi). All I said was that Q took a goalie who needs to play on a regular basis & seemed to have trouble a) getting him confident & b) working out the best workload to give him.
For example, Q didn’t play Huet for roughly 3 weeks/a month around the Olympics and – IIRC, which I admit I might not – said Huet was going to start a game and then switched to Niemi last-minute. There was a fanpost about some poster here whose brother is a goalie & he’d had his confidence shattered by poor coaching, too. That poster drew parallels between his brother & Huet.
Also, I’ve always maintained that Huet can be a good goalkeeper, but is very erratic. Sometimes he’s brilliant (Game 5 vs. Detroit last playoffs) and sometimes he isn’t (do I really need any examples in this part). That’s Huet. He isn’t brilliant, which no-one’s claiming he is, and he isn’t horrific, which too many people are accusing him of being.

Huet's issue
was that he did not possess the type of amnesia that all goalies (and baseball closers) need. He would let bad goals (and bad games) haunt him. His problems were entirely between his ears. Full stop.

Lu losing his "C"?
I got this from ESPN hockey rumors, but it really wouldn’t surprise me one bit if it is true.
After much speculation that Roberto Luongo would lose his captaincy, it looks like it’s finally happening. DobberHockey.com’s Jeff Angus tweets that Henrik Sedin is taking over the captaincy, and that Luongo won’t stand in the way of it
How would you like a job where, every time you make a mistake, a big red light goes on and 18,000 people boo?
Hrmm
Sedin doesn’t seem the captain-y type… I’d’ve guessed someone like Salo or Kesler. By & large, I think it’s generally a mistake to make your biggest points-getter captain. I could be wrong in this case, but he just doesn’t seem right.
Hart trophy winner
H Sedin would have been my first choice. I bet down the line Kesler could get it.
How would you like a job where, every time you make a mistake, a big red light goes on and 18,000 people boo?
it seems the logical choice to me
i mean i don’t know if he’s the best captain, but he is their best player right now. what i wonder is if he’d treat his brother the out-of-body-other-half-of-his-brain different from other players in the locker room — and if that might ever cause some tension down the road.

Yeah, he is their best player
but what I’m saying is that best player (or points-getter) != best captain, which you’ve already said in your post. I mean, guys like Kovalchuk & Gaborik, etc. aren’t captain material (not that Atlanta didn’t try, to keep him there). Sedin’s obviously not as selfish as those two, but I don’t see him as far enough in the other direction.
yes but the nucks have seemed to take the position in the past (according to no one else but the voice in my head) that best player = good captain. So it seems consistent with that.

Love this guy!
It is what we have done. Usually the more veteran guys that have the mettle and whatnot get the A. Ohlund, Mitchell, Salo, Kesler, …
Lots of teams give the C to their best player. Ovie and Sid come to mind.
Oh, were you guys looking at Torres? I can’t remember if I read that here.
He just signed here for 1 yr/1 mil…
Oh, and my pick if that story happens ( and GMMG shot it down already, said he hasn’t met with Lui about it yet ) would be Kesler. Mitchell would have been my first choice if he hadn’t been concussed last year.
Now, I would just like to see him resign and trade Bieksa.
We seem to be having two different arguments here
one of them is about the best player being the captain, and one of them is about the biggest point-getter being captain. My original point was that, generally, I’d be wary about making my top scorer the captain.
The League seems to agree with me, with 9 of the 26 teams that had/have captains – counting both SJS and Toronto – naming their top scorer captain. Some of them are captains, like Koivu or Richards, and others (in my opinion) aren’t, like Nash.
Depends I guess. I didn’t know we were arguing…should I say something contradictory now? ;-)
I am one of the few that like Lui as a captain. I have changed and want to see it change just because of the distraction. In that sense, the goalie/captain thing is a failure.
T.O is a good example. Phaneuf is not their top scorer, but he is one of their better ones. Lidstrom is a better example. Dude is the definition of a captain, but won’t ever be their top scorer. Great captain though. Chara is another. No denying his impact on his team, but not the top scorer. Shea Weber another. Brewer in St. Loo is no where near their best player. ( I thought Backes should wear the C there. )
Vinny in Tampa is not the top scorer, but his past accomplishments were important enough to the team to give it to him ( Top paycheque probably another reason.
Is he a similar “meh” captain to you as Nash is?
Then again, Marleau had one of his best seasons the year after losing the C. Maybe that will be Lui this year.
It has to be the guy that the team will follow. Chris Drury in NY is a perfect example of that. There are other more talented guys there, but he commands the respect. can you imagine Gabby as captain?
Call them discussions?
Unless you want to get into an argument about that, too? :P
I don’t know enough about Vinny to say for sure, but my gut reaction is that he’s a “no”. Judging from your last paragraph, you and I seem to be on the same page re: leadership; I just don’t know if Sedin is the right guy to rally the troops in tough times, as it were.
The reason I don’t like Lu as captain is that he seems like a whiner & isn’t there mentally. If you watch him whenever he feels slighted (like by Buff or Brouwer), he’ll go to the refs and bitch about it. It seemed to get in his head & truly affect him. If you watched, say, Niemi, he’d just pick himself up and shake it off.
If Lu’s your leader and you see him moaning to the refs for every little infraction, it doesn’t inspire you with confidence, does it? I think he’s a very good goalie when he’s on his game, but he doesn’t seem like a leader.
It's not just that aspect that sends the wrong message
His post – series quotes about how he gave up less goals vs. the previous year’s against the Hawks, so he was pleased with himself regardless of the outcome. What kind of message does that send, coming from your captain? Last I heard it was still a team game. The guy has a serious lapse of judgement regarding his overall behavior.
wasn't he being
a bit sarcastic/ironic with the less goals than last year comment? I didn’t think he was seriously happy about that, but I fully admit to not paying much attention to the context.

See Germy, we are on the right page with leadership. I like Kesler because he is more vocal, and young captains have shown they can step up so many times…
But I am of a differing opinion on Lui. Every goalie talks to the refs when they are contacted, bowled over, or whatever.
I did like Lui being captain because he is, or should be, our best player.
But having the goalie talk to reporters after…its tough for a goalie to do without sounding like he is bitching. Just look no further than Waylon’s comment ( no offense! ) below yours. That perception is why I think we should make the change.
He already came out in the playoffs, and reiterated it would be from now on, that he would no longer talk to the media on game days.
Seeing how the captain usually does at least some of that, it is perhaps a subtle message as to his wanting to continue with it.
I've always thought
that goalies bitch and complain too much to be effective as a Captain. I know that there are some captains that are like that (Crosby) but they aren’t on the ice for a full 60 minutes. I’m sure that after awhile, some of these refs end up tuning out whatever Luongo says. I know I would.
Maybe, just once, someone will call me 'Sir' without adding, 'You're making a scene."
One viewpoint.
You are right about there being a different bias for goalies as opposed to skaters.
Yeah, goalies complain. I know. I have stood in there. Not anywhere even remotely in the same galaxy as these guys, but a little in minor hockey and in adult rec league floor hockey.
I think I bitched every time I was on the top of my crease and got bowled over so a goal could trickle through.
Pretty tough not to.
It will be interesting to see if he gets more calls after dropping the “C”.
He may or may not
at the same time the responsibility will be lifted from his shoulders and I think his concentration would improve. Another plus for him is that without the duties of being captain, the general fan might stop thinking he’s such a huge crybaby. Personally I think he is a bit of a crybaby but I have a feeling you’ll disagree.
Anyway, I’d put the “C” on Kesler and see how that works out.
Maybe, just once, someone will call me 'Sir' without adding, 'You're making a scene."
See…thats the thing. Most real fans don’t think that. Sure, the braying idiots and somenkids on hockeybuzz chat threads say that…and of course our rivals will couch it in those terms.
But most fans I know don’t think that at all. Its like what I said above about the difficulty of a goalie talking in terms of “we” when a mistake is made.
People that are so inclined will take that to mean he is a total douche crybaby asshole.
But that doesn’t make it so.
Sort of like how Luongo would be looked at on Fox News if Glenn Beck was a Hawks fan.

See, this is the thing
Most real fans don’t think that.
That takes you from honest debate into trolldom.
Spend more than a few minutes here and you should know that cdz is a “real fan” by any definition. You can disagree with another poster without questioning their cred as a “fan”, because when it comes down to it, what that really means is: “I’m smart, you’re stupid, shut the fuck up.”
And now that we know you were a goalie, and admit to being a whiner, it all makes sense.

"Every goalie talks to the refs when....."
Not true. If Niemi got hosed on a particular play, he’d keep his mouth shut and go about his business. In game 1 of the SC Finals Niemi gets interferred with on Timonen’s goal. He kind of gestures that he’s annoyed, but he doesn’t flip out like Lu. In a 6-5 game, Niemi was able to keep his composure, something that Lu doesn’t seem to be capable of, at least against us. Lu’s bitch sessions are completely over the top, and they take him off of his game. It’s a problem for a goalie, and it’s an even bigger problem for a captain.
Ditto for Badgerdano
His whining was so bad
…that on one play he was tripped up by his own defenseman, yet skated madly to the refs anyway. I don’t like to say it, but what a wussy.
Not buying that.
I think you thoroughly enjoyed saying that.

Guilty as charged
But truthfully this time, I don’t want to say that Kesler’s a coward.
Good lord guys. I never expected to convince a bunch of Hawk fans about Lui.
Every goalie talks to the refs. Niemi too. He may play with less apparent emotion, and Lui is more outwardly emotional ( come on guys, he is Italian. He is just talking with his hands!)
But Niemi, and any other goalies that play it cool…like say…Kipper, they wait until a TV time out, or the ref coming up to them ( and they do )…and the have their chance.
Actually, I only played goal very little in real live ice hockey. Was more an irritating 3rd liner that hit pretty good…or a defensive defenseman that had the best hip check on the team.
But I did fill in enough to stop bitching about goalies bitching.
So what you're saying is
That Lu is just more of a whiny bitch about talking to refs. Gotcha.
There are only two seasons in Chicago; Hockey and Construction.
Niemi didn't talk to the refs
He was afraid they would molest him looking for the puck again.

I nominate Shane Obrien
That guy is awesome – only a real leader takes dumb penalties concurrently in critical playoff games. That guy was in the box so often he should have just started each game there, and left it only for intermittent periods.

Yes. But the Rockford Ice Hogs are going to be the SHIT!
Im just sad its probably too late for Pirri and Leddy to be in NHL 11. I’d probably call Leddy up right away.

Wow.
These points really stood out:
Kris Versteeg, Andrew Ladd and Dustin Byfuglien were all dealt to clear space under the salary cap; Versteeg landed in Toronto, while Ladd and Byfuglien are now Thrashers. Between them, the trio scored 54 regular season goals and missed just three games total.
and
[Hossa] missed the first part of 2009-10 while recovering from shoulder surgery and wound up with 24 goals in 57 games. The season before, in Detroit, he had 40.
Looks to me like getting an additional 20 goals from Hossa, plus what we can expect from Skille and Stalberg, should make up for what we lost.
Our Cup.
I'm sure someone else here has said this
But winning the Stanley Cup enabled the ’hawks to get maximum value for players they would have had to trade anyway. The Capocalypse was going to happen no matter what.
I believe they have a real chance to get back to the finals IF
o they avoid serious/long term injury
o their stars play up to potential
o their young/new players continue to improve throughout the year (requiring patience by the coaches and increased leadership from the stars)
im with you...but for some reason..

Kane wants 100 pts this year
He wants to be in that elite class of point scorers. Can’t wait to watch the kid for another 5 years.
"...can i have a glass of whiskey and a slice of bread?"
there's no way of knowing
until training camp starts, but he’s said in a few different interviews I’ve read that 1) he’s been doing some training, and 2) he’s looking forward to the challenge/pressure and scoring more this season. just my opinion, but while kane will probably never be as responsible or serious as toews, i still don’t think he is one to piss away his hockey career.

The only excuse Kane can have

one of my brother's friends got wind of where kane was going to be with the cup
before the jimmy buffet concert. They went there and said he was super trashy and hammered. I’m hoping that was a special occasion because he had the cup.
Having said that, I’m pretty confident Kane is working pretty hard for the rest of the offseason because he really wants the 100 point barrier. I think he knows he’s a (or maybe even the)key to the offense this season after watching the turnover this summer

The kid needs about 10 more pounds
If not more, so I hope he becomes a little like JR in his prime, although that’s probably not realistic. Watching him get plastered to the boards by Pronger every time he attempted to begin the cycle really made me wince. He’s too shifty to get nailed like that often, but it only takes one to take his shoulders out.
Oh and I forgot one
o their goaltending does not massively reduce their chances of winning games.
If the O can score 4, I’m ok with the D/goalie giving up 3. But I’m not OK with a passel of 6-4 losses. The ’hawks did not have many of those last year.

they included Frank Boucher, who I hadn’t heard of until I read that. I can kind of see his reasoning that “I chose Jagr when I looked at his importance to the franchise AT HIS TIME, I thought he deserved to be there. He brought the Rangers back to respectability, and made them a relevant franchise again” but I still don’t think Jagr deserves to be on it.

I sit in 326, right behind the west net.
Usually, there’s a camera taking up 8 seats in the first two rows.
But, when Vs. does the telecasts, they don’t use the camera. Instead, the spaces are taken up by 8 folding chairs.
The thing is, as far as I can tell, there are no tickets associated with these seats. Last year, they were open for the most part, waiting for someone with the stones to come along and plop him/herself down.
Maybe things will be different this year, but this may be a way to upgrade a SRO ticket, for all you young hocket fans out there. May be worth a shot for the first Vs. game.
Don’t know for sure, but I wouldn’t be surprised if the same thing was happening at the east end.

WGN would fucking ante up and start televising some games. Since I moved to Houston that’s all I get. Looks like I’ll have to get “Center Ice” this year.
II Can Finally Die Happy Now!
I used to always get center ice
I started watching the feeds (feeds…….?) online last year. There is some delay, and the picture is small, but you have direct access to SCH while watching. The picture quality varies, but I have charter and the center ice picture quality is only marginally better. Someone always posts the feed and password before, during, and after the games. It saves you a wad of cash, if you can take a little smaller screen.
WGN does televise home games, but only in the home market. It’s an NHL rule. It says WGN, but it’s not always the same WGN as Chicago. “WGN America”.
The thing I miss the most with WGN is watching “The Cisco Kid” on weekend mornings

You can hook up using a VGA (standard monitor cable), S-Video or HDMI cable. If it’s one of the first two, you should hook up the audio to your television as well.

A question for our alcoholic overloards.
An article on Puck Daddy made me wonder: have you guys ever considered trying to get SCH credentialed as media for the Hawks?
I don’t really have an opinion on whether this would even be a good idea, but I think there’s very little argument that SCH is the premiere Hawks blog on the web - your page views alone would probably support this assertion, let alone comments and community interaction- and the Hawks have in the past shown themselves to be a very new media-friendly team (they really took the NHL’s video, website, and twitter projects and ran with them, to the point that the team has won awards for how they handle their approach to the interwebs). So I wondered if you guys had thought about trying for a credential, or if you decided against it (I could see how that would also be a completely reasonable take on things) and what drove that decision either way.
by spokeinthebandwagon on Aug 26, 2010 12:57 PM CDT reply actions
We were offered credentials through SBN for the finals, but did not take them.
A lot of thought went into this, but we came to the conclusion that having positioned ourselves how we have as being profane outsiders, that if we were to take the credentials, we would be beholden to the agenda of John McDonough and Jay Blunk. Not only that, but our responsibility is to you, the readers, as you have come to expect a certain type of product on this site. Being that we’re all giant fans first and foremost, at no point would we want to compromise whatever perceived integrity we have with you by in any way giving the appearance of sparing someone from our verbal wrath because they were nice to us in a post-game. On top of that, getting put in the press box means no cheering and having to stay sober during a game, two things I personally cannot abide by.
I may expound upon this a little bit more in a post this evening.

I think you could take the credentials without having to suck-up.
But I understand the reluctance about sitting in the press box.
Not to mention all of the old-guard guys from whom we’d likely catch flak. At one point or another, we’ve pretty well lambasted pretty much everyone in print media who has ever written anything about the Hawks.
Chicago Blackhawks - 2010 Stanley Cup Champions
Things have changed forever, we're the Ramblin' Boys of Pleasure
You seem like guys
with pretty tough skin. I bet you could take the flack.
If you do take the passes
You could end up face to face with asshats like McNeil and Morrissey so you could punch them in the dick for everyone.
There are only two seasons in Chicago; Hockey and Construction.
The problem with being with these guys in the press box on a regular basis is
that once you interact with them on a personal basis your view of them is changed. Most people are decent enough sorts once you get to know them a bit (and I’m going to assume this is true of most of the regular media guys & gals that cover the Hawks).
Once that relationship is established it’s almost impossible to retain the pure objectivity necessary to do what you do on this blog (even if you still think they don’t know shit about hockey).
If becoming part of the press box establishment would make any of you pause, for even one second, while creating any of the content of this site because you thought it might offend or be hurtful to the subject of your writing because of personal feelings toward them, then taking a pass on those credentials to preserve the essence of what this blog is was the right move in my opinion.
"Life is a long lesson in humility."
- James M. Barrie
I respect that stance. And I love you guys (and girl)!
You’ve built an amazing site, and if I were in your shoes, I like to think that I’d have made the same decision.
I certainly didn’t mean to intimate or imply that SCH needed credentials to be relevant or responsive, because frankly you guys-and-girl have been more incisive than most of the credentialed media over the past season (as far as concerns the Hawks). I was just curious as to whether you’d taken steps in that direction, and whether/how the team had responded. Had they been open to bloggers, since many NHL teams seem not to be? Had they been receptive, but cautious? I’m interested in how the Hawks intend to handle things.
If you would/could detail their response in a future post, I for one would be sincerely interested. This is fantastic stuff, when it comes to the cutting edge of NHL fan relations.
I know our Hawks are very in-tune with new media. Hell, I for one have emailed regularly with one of the teams’ new media pioneers, because I follow his movie podcast. (Imagine my surprise two years ago when my favorite movie critic AKA Adam Kempanaar also became my favorite hockey team interviewer!).
I’m actually very impressed that they offered you credentials for the Finals, and I’d love to hear the story of how you decided not to take them. I know it must have been difficult. So please, tell us about your reasoning on this stuff. I know a lot of other blogs would kill to be offered credentials, but you guys have always been a classy presence on the blog scene, and I really admire your decision to remain independent.
Good for you all, and thank you for replying to my query!
