Top 16 Goals of the 2009-10 Year
Ed note: - This was put together by Hackrar and CNS, and their efforts deserve some front page recognition. Enjoy the clips and vote! - McClure
Goals. The 2009-2010 Chicago Blackhawks scored a lot of them, here's a quick look at the numbers:
REGULAR SEASON
- 179 - 5 on 5 goals (2nd in the NHL)
- 50 - 5 on 4 goals (T-12th in the NHL)
- 2 - 5 on 3 goals (T-22nd in the NHL)
- 16 - 4 on 4 goals (1st in the NHL)
- 13 shorthanded goals (1st in the NHL)
- 2 empty net goals (T-29th in the NHL)
- 91 first period goals (2nd in the NHL)
- 84 second period goals (7th in the NHL)
- 81 third period goals (7th in the NHL)
- 6 overtime goals (2nd in the NHL)
- 262 goals in total (2nd in the NHL. NOTE: 271 'goals for' shown on ESPN's standings because they include 1 for each shootout win, 9 in total)
STANLEY CUP CHAMPIONSHIP POSTSEASON
- 49 - 5 on 5 goals (1st of 16)
- 15 - 5 on 4 goals (2nd)
- 3 - 5 on 3 goals (2nd)
- 2 - 4 on 4 goals (1st)
- 4 shorthanded goals (1st)
- 5 empty net goals (1st)
- 21 first period goals (1st)
- 29 second period goals (2nd)
- 25 third period goals (1st)
- 3 overtime goals (T-1st)
- 78 playoff goals in total (1st)
Our Hawks scored 340 goals in 2009-2010, and I went back and reviewed every single one of them. I selected what I believe to be the top 16 goals (including playoffs), basing my choices purely on the skill of the goal scored with little to no regard given to the game situation in which the goal was scored. I thought it'd be fun for SCH to do something similar to NHL.com and have a seeded tournament in which we pit the goals against each other and vote on the match-ups until 1 goal, the Goal of the Year, is left standing. Unfortunately, Fanposts only allow 1 poll per post, which makes my original intent nearly impossible. Instead, I've included a poll with all 16 choices, and only 1 vote will occur to determine the Goal of the Year.
I performed my selection earlier this summer, but then, I procrastinated on the fanpost. Luckily, Katherine unintentionally gave me a swift kick in the ass with her recent (and quite successful I might add) year in review fanposts. (Hawks Best/Worst of the season) (SCH Best/Worst of the season)
In order to make this fanpost a one stop shop, I asked ChicagoNativeSon to help me put together a video of the top goals. I asked merely for help and what I got was a video that doesn't simply make the fanpost, it is the fanpost. As usual, CNS went above and beyond in order to keep his fellow SCH'ers as entertained as possible. Thanks again to CNS, not just for this video, but for all of his outstanding videos and photoshops.
After about as much meaningful fluff as I could muster.......here are the top 16 goals of the year (broken up into 2 parts):
These videos can be found on YouTube, here: PART 1 - PART 2
Keep in mind that based on your votes and your comments, CNS and I might revise the videos with 2 possible edits:
- Swap out goals - if the consensus is that a worthy goal has not been included and should replace 1 of the current 16
- Reorder the goals - if the consensus is that a goal is ranked too high or too low
Thanks,
Hack and CNS

Just noticed that the last goal shown
says “Patrick Sharp” in the Video instead of Kane. We’ll get that fixed.
Ditto for Badgerdano
Fixed (as soon as hackerer updates the FanPost links)
You’ll know you’re seeing the corrected version of Part 2 if Kane “cuts the music” (you’ll know what I mean). Also, the quality of the 2nd video will be bad for about the first 30 minutes that it is posted until YouTube does the final processing of the conversion.
And of course – REC’D! Ha!

I'm cool with all of these choices
Great work! One possible omission that might warrant consideration is Ladd’s curl/drag/top shelf wrister against SJS, in game 1 or 2. You know, the one with the sweet behind the goal camera angle.
Of course, that goal probably looked cooler than it actually was, and Nabby should’ve nabbed it.
Oh, and rec’d for sure.

I actually was deciding between
Sharp’s game 5 goal and Sharp’s game 1 goal. I liked the way Sharpie received Kane’s pass and ripped one blocker side (less room than glove side), plus his celebration of the game 5 goal was awesome. It’s probably because I went to game five, but I love that goal.

I had to go with Steeger's double curl-n-drag
Always thought that was the “Ha! left your strap at the top of the ring!!” type of move.
And when you can do it twice in as many seconds, dats gotta be da bomb.
Just win the next game...!

My favorite was Buff’s OT winner against the Rangers. The UC went nuts. Hossa crazy shot against Tampa Bay was badass too/

I was at the game against the Rangers
So many people have said to me “Wow, that must have been a great game to be at!” They get disappointed when I tell them it was one of the most boring games I’ve been to in the past few years, until Buff’s goal in OT.

I always thought Buff's OT goal (#12) was a bit overrated
it was a great rush, but if it wasn’t Buff suprising us with the burst of speed, and if the goal wasn’t in OT, I don’t think people would be quite as high on it.
Ditto for Badgerdano
I'm not sure I'm allowed to disagree with you now...
Never-the-less, it’s always a thrill to me any time I see a big lumbering galoot rush up the ice and pot one. I don’t think at #12 it’s overrated, but I wouldn’t put it any higher. I am surprised, however, that you placed Barker’s goal in the #2 slot. I’m not even sure it belongs in the top 16 but then I didn’t look at every goal scored as you did.
39 years of pain vaporized by one OT goal. (1971 loss to Habs)
yeah Barker's goal is definitely way overrated
I think it is top ten, but it certainly isn’t better than Toews, Hossa, and Versteeg’s goals. Don’t know what I was thinking about originally on that ranking.
Buff’s goal isn’t overrated at 12, but I meant overrated as in a lot of people love that goal more than some that required more skill, in my opinion.
Ditto for Badgerdano
Whew
Glad we’re on the same page. Btw, it takes skill to get a freight train rolling.
39 years of pain vaporized by one OT goal. (1971 loss to Habs)
And another thing...
I’d place Steeger’s goal ahead of Tazer’s flying leap. I’m somewhat surprised by the number of votes Tazer has, but then again not really since he is o captain, my captain. I’m guessing the women haven’t voted yet since Sharpie still has no votes.

hey, sharpie already won his category in KtG's poll
he is a sexy man (way sexier than Derrick Rose…wtf?), but he doesn’t catch my top three goals of the year:
1. Kane vs. MN
2. Toews vs. Nashville
3. Hossa’s glove hand score

Poor Barker, overrated yet again
No votes, plus the announcer calls him “Dan Barker” at the 6:50 min mark.
It was a nice goal by Barker and I’m assuming the pass to himself along the boards, plus the fact that it was end-to-end played a part in your decision, but the defensivemen for Colorado also did a great job of being completely useless on that whole play. Twas a nice little soft forehand flip finish though by Barker.

The little pass to himself was sweet.
No doubt. The Colorado d-man wasn’t completely useless though; without him acting as a pylon I doubt that goal would have made the top 16.

i feel somewhat responsible for the Barker tihngee
I lobbied hack to include it on a couple of occasions. It was end-to-end, it was an important goal in the game, and it was Ma Barker’s kid, but when you see it up there against some of that sicknes…maybe deserves a spot on the podium, but near the bottom at best.

Okay, so I can't stop watching these
I think the Top 5 are all worthy of “goal of the year”… except Barker’s. Definitely a badass goal, but Versteeg’s double curl and drag, Toews’ acrobatics, Hossa’s hand/eye, and Kaner’s “Belmont Transfer” are in a class all their own.

I wonder if I change the name of Kane's goal
to Belmont transfer, if it’d mess up the poll. I forgot about McClure’s awesome nickname for that one.

Excellent choices and excellent video.
My vote goes to the #1 pick in the video. I was at that game, as was I for most of the home goals. I wasn’t even sure that Kane had scored, the puck went in and out so fast that it looked like it could have pinged off the crossbar. That goal was just filthy, Kane must have sold his soul to the devil for that one or gotten some black magic, I don’t know.
Did I mention that was a filthy goal?

I was at that game too. Couldn’t believe that shot. That kid is sick.
19-88-81-2-7-10-36-4-51 : The Hawks
unbelievable shot
there’s so much to that goal that makes it ridiculous. When I watch that clip, I look at Kane’s hands the whole time. The kid is shifting the puck around and stickhandling nearly up until the point where he releases the puck. I would figure that if most players were going to try a turnaround shot like that, they’d have to keep the puck on the forehand side of their blade just to get a shot on net.
Ditto for Badgerdano
Shouldn't we also consider the goalie?
He made a pretty good goalie (Backstrom) look absolutely helpless there.
Whereas with Toews’ goal, he pretty much went right around a flailing Dan Ellis.

Rec'd this post
even though I can’t see the videos at work. I’ll vote tonight at home but I’m pretty sure my top choice will be that turn around shot of Kaner’s from the left faceoff circle into the top left corner of the net. I don’t recall who that was against but it was an awesome shot into a very small target. (Of course I’m assuming that’s in the top 16.)
39 years of pain vaporized by one OT goal. (1971 loss to Habs)
Yep
So many goals and so few votes. Kaner’s goal against MN is my number 1. That was just a work of art. My second most favorite was Brouwer’s goal.
Hack and CNS – This was awesome! Truly excellent work! Thanks!!!

Patrick Kane = The Big Fella?
Eh, Nashville announcer?
Other random highlights/thoughts
-After Eager’s goal, he celebrates with Buff and Sopel.
-Already mentioned, but I find it hilarious that Jason Demers fell flat on his face during both goals #7 and #9
-Kane’s kick to the stick was sick (rhyme time). I think that might be the most underrated goal up there. Almost looks like he kicks it with both of his skates
-We fucking owned the Sharks last year
-David Bolland will be the best 3rd line center in the league next year, and Troy Brouwer will score 30 goals
-We fucking own Luongo

additional notes
- of goals in the top 16
Kane 4, Sharp 3
Barker, Hossa, Toews, Versteeg, Bolland, Brouwer, Byfuglien, Eager, and Hendry at 1 a piece
You’re right though, I think #10 Kane and #11 Kane are both underrated goals. I think I might move them before #8 Kane, but I’m not sure yet.
Also, I might post some youtube game links (with time of goal(s)) for some honorable mentions. There were about 15-20 goals, in addition to the 16, that I shortlisted.
Ditto for Badgerdano
I can't believe no votes for Kane's #10 yet.
I voted for the Belmont Transfer, but it and #10 were 1 and 1A for me.
The skill Kaner exhibits on that Helsinki goal is phenomenal. The off balance stretch to gain control of the puck, then, when he’s practically on top of the goalie, he still manages to sell a forehand fake and then roof a sweet backhander past the lunging netminder.
Tremendously tremendous!

It was good to hear Edzo. He generally drives me nuts but I think I’m so deprived of hockey that even “tremendously tremendous” and “for all you young hockey players” sounds great.

They are all great, thanks for the compilation and stats
One of my favorites is Sir Hoss’ catch and shoot, simply because of the hand eye coordination it takes to accomplish that while on the move, but the one that takes the cake for me is Toews complete undressing of Nashville. You can watch that about a hundred times (and I have) and still be blown away by it. Foley’s “You only get to watch that for about 5 more years” reaction is priceless.
Back off man, I'm a scientist
Bug Chucker Fly Fishing
The thing I love about the Toews goal
is that the D-man he undresses in front of the net is none other than Dan Hamhuis, the guy the ‘Nucks fans are high on as one of the reasons they’re going to totally pwn us this year. Apparently.
Hendry is the man
I really think Hendry’s goal belongs higher up – I remember seeing that goal and almost peeing myself – here’s our little undrafted depth guy, screaming down the ice with Toews and scores BACKHANDED on Luongo. I was proud, almost like a Mom would be.
I know ill get flamed for it.. but...
Yall are dumb :p While the Kane and Toews goals were more “flashy”, from a pure skill point, Hossa’s is by far the “number one”. The Hand eye coordination and hand speed required for that… yeesh. Toews just did a little ballet :p
Hmm, disagree
Hossa’s goal was unreal, but he didn’t really “create” it. I’m not disputing the level of skill and hand/eye coordination, but the puck came right to him.
Toews, Kane, and Versteeg all created their own shots on their goals. I think that has to factor into the equation, especially on Kaner’s Belmont Transfer, where he stripped the puck from a D-man, held it behind the net, then pulled off that ridiculous carousel move.

I agree with your disagreement
Not wanting to be a contrarian, Dranearian, but the Hossa goal was more flashy. Don’t get me wrong, it was a very cool goal, but as Panda pointed out, the other goals included stealing the puck, skating around d-men, and skating into shooting position.
I’m glad to see Brouwer’s goal getting some votes. Obviously this site is not hosted in Chicago since I was allowed only one vote.

obviously you're not thinking creatively enough
you only get 1 vote per username. This is when you act like VerStig and make a bunch of sock-puppets in order to stuff the ballot. ;P
I posted this in another thread
but I think Hossa’s goal involved the most luck of the three. It was great hand eye coordination to whack it out of mid air and get it on net, but the fact that it went in was pretty lucky. I doubt Hoss was aiming at a particular spot. I can’t find a link, but I think that even Hoss said it was lucky in his postgame interview (granted, Hoss is pretty ‘aww shucks’ humble). There was a degree of luck in Kane’s goal as well, but not quite as much.
Ditto for Badgerdano
That's right, I remember him saying it was lucky
Plus, it was against Nittymaki, who’s not exactly the type of goalie you’d pin your Stanley Cup hopes on.

As said earlier in other comments in reply to this
I was talking about this with a friend last night, he said Hossa’s was better than Kane’s, and I disagreed (obviously).
Like the other comments have said, Hossa’s had a true element of luck. But in addition to that I think that there was an element of shock — I don’t think the Lightning goalie could quite believe what he was seeing, and I certainly don’t think he was expecting Hossa to strike the puck dead on into the goal, which takes incredible hand-eye coordination, which Hossa has, but there’s something about that just seems absurd, it almost seems as if the goalie is admiring it before realizing that the puck is heading for his crease. Not only that, the goalie had a wide-open field to be able to catch the puck.
On the flip side, Kaner’s goal came through a clusterfuck of traffic and even within that traffic, Backstrom knew exactly where Kane was with the puck. Hossa pretty much had the entire goal to shoot at, whereas Kaner had a tiny little circle right above Backstrom’s right shoulder that was about the size of a pea, and he Belmont Transfer’d it in and out of the goal, so fast that it looked like it could have pinged off the crossbar, and Preacher (in reply to my other post above) did point out that Kane actually did look to the referee to make sure that it went in.
Like I said earlier, just an absolutely filthy goal by Kane and one that I still wasn’t sure that had gone in… actually I think I might have been more sure that Kane scored the Cup winning goal originally than scoring that one back in October. No discredit to Hossbollah of course, but I think Kane’s for the reasons listed above is the reason why it should be (and according to hackerar) is #1

i don't think hossa's goals tend to be that flashy
sort of like toews…they get some pretty ones, but most of them are grinding it out, and sniping…look at all of toews and hossa’s shootout goals…all of em are just skating up, picking a spot and burying it.
I want to see you guys to the top 16 assists of the year now…probably see more hossa and toews there.

Best assist,
great speed and a bonus Edzo line.

The assist was awesome
but the goal wasn’t much. The play all together was sweet, between toews’ pass and Hossa’s hustle, but I’d categorize that as a great assist.

Remember the shootout game in 08-09 when Hossa beat us in the shootout? He skated right down the ice and just fucking blasted it top shelf against Huet. Wings won 6-5 in one of the funnest hockey games I’ve ever attended even though the Hawks came out with the short end.

Secret ballots?
Is it possible to see who voted for each goal? Not sure why, but I’m curious about who voted for what.
39 years of pain vaporized by one OT goal. (1971 loss to Habs)
I went with Eager
But for all the wrong reasons – it was just that shocking/surprising to me, coming from him in that situation, with so little minutes available to him during that series. BTW, this wouldn’t qualify for the list, but Steeger’s slap shot against Philly in Game 6 still gets to me – something about that shot reminded me just a little of Hull. No way any goalie gets to that one.
Thanks
That was awesome. Since I only get one vote (not very Chicago-like), I am going to have to think about it until this evening (and thanks for that too).
I meant shot, not slapshot
Now I’m wondering why his former teammates haven’t mastered that curl and drag move.
what shot are you talking about?
I don’t remeber this Versteeg game 6 business.

I have to say most of you make me laugh, and all of you make me feel not bad for drinking as much as I do. I hope to get to know you all a little(or alot) better over this coming season.

I think the fact that you replaced “Ditto for CNS” with “Ditto for Badgerdano” – and that’s the first thing that got struck out – is very telling!

I chose Hossa.
It was a toss up between Hossa’s and Toews’s goals. Only reason I chose Hossa was the difficulty of the hand eye coordination. I can see the luck side of it but the skill it takes to catch, drop, and hit before it touches the ground on the move…add in hitting it towards an open spot in goal…just made it tremendously tremendous!
OT: who brokes teh interwebz again? strike through ftl.

This was my favorite
First of all, awesome collection. But I was waiting to see this one:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ljgHyqA42SQ
I had to hunt around for it, ripped it and posted it on Youtube.
This was my favorite goal this year. I watched it so many times when I saw it, rewinding my DVR over and over. Sure, it was a power play, but there was so much skill from multiple players. It happened so fast and they just dismantled to the Flames on this play. Soupy started the action. Keith with a wicked little behind-the-back. Kane with a nasty, quick, perfect pass threading the needle across the ice. Versteeg rips the one-timer into a wide open net. The Flames looked like a pee-wee team on tape delay.
You even hear the Calgary crowd respond in awe, and even though I hate Calgary, they know their hockey and they involuntarily showed their respect for this play.
Maybe it’s not the best goal of the season, but it belongs in the top 10 for my money.
I'm without a home.
that's another goal that doesn't really fit what I was trying to look for
much like the toews-hossa short handed goal.
It’s an awesome sequence, but the goal itself (what the goal scorer does) is nothing overly special. Maybe Kane’s assist would fall into a top assists of the year category. My philosophy was similar to that of the NHL.com link that I posted, I really just looked at the goal scorer’s individual skill.
Another example of a great sequence of passing is the game 5 powerplay goal against philly, where all 5 players touched the puck in a matter of seconds. I wouldn’t include a play like that in goal of the year either.
Ditto for Badgerdano
fair enough, it's your list
but this play was far superior to the game 5 goal in my humble, yet overly proud opinion.
I'm without a home.
and the goal on this was better
Versteeg on a one-timer is much more difficult a shot than Buff on a tap in (basically just keeping his stick on the ice).
I'm without a home.
when you said better than the game 5 goal
I thought you were saying versteeg’s one timer against calgary was better than Sharp’s game 5 snipe, that’s what I was disagreeing with.

Gee I thought you really really really liked CNS
How would you like a job where, every time you make a mistake, a big red light goes on and 18,000 people boo?
gah, that was so hard to decide!
we have some rather talented guys on our hockey club. I was torn between the Toews goal and Kane’s Belmont Transfer, but I eventually went with Kaner.
CNS – excellent work on the videos!! I never got a chance to watch it when you sent me the first one, so this was my first viewing. Well worth the wait!
My personal preference
1) Hossa
2) Toews (Nashville)
3) Kane (turnaround)
4) Buff
The one goal that I thought was missing was the one where Versteeg blew up the left side and then cut across to the slot like he was shot out of a cannon and ripped a wrister from the high slot. It was very similar to the Brouwer goal that made the cut, just more dynamic. Also, I would have rated the Barker goal a little lower, I thought the finish wasn’t any more impressive than the Hendry goal or the Kane against Florida goal, and I thought in terms of rush up the ice the Buff rush was better.
which versteeg goal
he did that twice, once against vancouver (in the same game as hendry’s goal) and beat luongo high glove side, and he also did it in game 5 of the SC finals and beat leighton on the stick side. Which one of the two were you thinking of?
Also, which goal do you propose that it should replace?
Ditto for Badgerdano
Why only 16?
Did you explain that somewhere and I missed it? For 16 playoff victories? I would have enjoyed a top 100 goals. I can watch those videos over and over and over and over and over and over…
39 years of pain vaporized by one OT goal. (1971 loss to Habs)
sort of explained
I thought it’d be fun for SCH to do something similar to NHL.com and have a seeded tournament in which we pit the goals against each other and vote on the match-ups until 1 goal, the Goal of the Year, is left standing. Unfortunately, Fanposts only allow 1 poll per post, which makes my original intent nearly impossible. Instead, I’ve included a poll with all 16 choices, and only 1 vote will occur to determine the Goal of the Year
I wanted to do a head to head tournament with the goals, so I needed a good even tournament number, such as 16. I ended up not being able to do the fanpost the way I wanted to, but I still have the number at 16 because of it.
Ditto for Badgerdano
I don't like the direction the votes are trending.
So I feel compelled to do as Ahnfire suggested and create a couple hundred SCH accounts to make sure Kaner’s Belmont Transfer wins, as it should. Baderdano1, Badgerdano2, Badgerdano3… Badgerdano200. I feel like I’m creating an army or orcs!

How would you like a job where, every time you make a mistake, a big red light goes on and 18,000 people boo?
Eager
The fact that he was on the list meant that I had to vote for him
Right handed people live, on average, nine years longer than left handed people.
Before watchin the videos.
I thought I was going to be voting for Hossa’s mid-air attack. Then I remember Toews’ sick goal against Nashville. Then the Versteeg double drag was soooo pretty. But alas, my vote went to Kaner’s Belmont transfer. The degree of difficulty is so high on that, and he had an opening the size of a peanut to fit the puck through. I was at that game sitting behind the goal and was stunned it went in. Even on the replays I didn’t believe it. Best goal of the season
Hossa’s mid-air attack
Thing about the mid-air attack is that Hossa later admitted that the puck hit the ice. Still a nice goal but he didn’t bat it out of the air.
uhm, I think your interpretation is little off.
The puck, AFTER being batted in mid-air, proceeds to hit the ice and bounce in 5-hole. So yes, the puck does hit the ice, like Hossa admits. But it was still batted in mid-air; it just didn’t stay in flight all the way into the goal.
uh no
Hossa admitted that he hit the puck after it hit the ice first. He (at least originally) corrected people when they said he hit the puck out of the air…
quote?
the quality above isn’t optimal, but between the time he dropped the puck and the time he hit it, and given an assumed rate of acceleration of 9.8 m/s2, I don’t believe the puck had time to reach the ice.

All I can tell you...
is when he was asked after the game, he said on the video, if he hit it in the air it was after the bounce…
well until you find that video
I’m going to assume you misheard/misremembered. I tried to find what you were talking about but found this instead.
“I tried to do it, but I wasn’t expecting it,” Hossa said. “I hit it right on the money. I think I hit it straight out of the air.”
I saw that which is why...
I commented on it in the first place.
That goal has turned into a fish story. I’m sure by the time Hossa writes his autobiography he’ll describe that goal as being hit out of the air at waist level…
However, when he was first asked the question he admitted he didn’t hit the puck in the air and admitted it hit the ice first. Personally, I just wanted to set the record straight but at this point I don’t really care any more…
I think I heard him say
the same thing when he was first asked (maybe in the postgame?). But i think he said he thought it hit the ice first, rather than it being an admission of anything. I took it as more an, “aw, shucks, I’m not THAT good, it must’ve hit the ice first” kind of response.
by Katherine215 on Aug 30, 2010 2:44 PM CDT up reply actions
you can clearly see on the replay (the last replay)
that the puck was whacked out of mid air. You don’t agree?

Far from me to question but ...
- I wouldn’t have included Eager’s goal in here. Luv the big dumb goof but a simple slapshot that surprised Leighton (and all of us) was average…not quality.
- for those of you who love the Kaner goal…while it’s a great goal, not sure I would call this skill. Kaner threw it to the net with a ton of traffic in front. As chisox and preacher noted, Kaner looked to the ref to see if it even went in.
My vote went to Versteeg’s double drag…sick move across the crease. I would say Sharpie’s goal (#19) is underrated – great stickwork on the deke.
Finally – CNS and hackerar – well done!!
I had to go with Toews’ “new contract” goal as he nearly goes in 1 on 3 and scores.

Was Bolland’s shorty against vancouver, where he is basically abused the entire length of the ice

for lack of skill, leights should not have let that one in. maybe replaced with hossas SHG vs STL, it was a great assist by toews but hed have no one to assist to if hossa didn’t get up there, which I’m not too sure that he was skating forward he very well could have been pushing the earth backwards. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sfr8fAKLJgY
