Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Those Anarcho Punks Are Mysterious...

Yesterday, in the comments of the Huet-to-Switzerland posting, spokeinthebandwagon posed the question to me of if we had ever sought out official media credentials, which came up as a result of some of the developments around the World Hockey summit, specifically the reluctance to credential "new media" types such as us by certain clubs. Here was my response:

We were offered credentials through SBN for the finals, but did not take them.

A lot of thought went into this, but we came to the conclusion that having positioned ourselves how we have as being profane outsiders, that if we were to take the credentials, we would be beholden to the agenda of John McDonough and Jay Blunk. Not only that, but our responsibility is to you, the readers, as you have come to expect a certain type of product on this site. Being that we’re all giant fans first and foremost, at no point would we want to compromise whatever perceived integrity we have with you by in any way giving the appearance of sparing someone from our verbal wrath because they were nice to us in a post-game. On top of that, getting put in the press box means no cheering and having to stay sober during a game, two things I personally cannot abide by.

Additionally, I remarked further down in the discussion that should we choose to take advantage of being credentialed, it would be almost assured that many of the old media types would do everything in their power to make things as difficult as possible for us; a) because many of them don't necessarily respect what we do due to lack of training and think we're completely without accountability, and b) due to that lack of accountability, we've pretty much roasted every member of the mainstream media who covers the Hawks at one time or another. While we have admittedly done the latter, it's not that we do it because we don't have to answer for our actions, nor is it to do it simply to be controversial. I think I can speak for the four of us when I say one of the primary reasons that we started contributing to this outlet was due to the disappointment in local and in-depth media coverage of our beloved Blackhawks- something that hasn't really changed even with the spike in popularity and a Stanley Cup championship.

Now, were any of the four of us actually put into a credentialed situation, I am 103.7% confident that we'd be able to comport ourselves in a professional manner, as well as ask difficult questions when necessary. But, as I stated yesterday, the important thing is preception, particularly after after we've positioned ourselves with the voice that we have already. I'm sure that many of you would feel that us being credentialed would be tantamount to Against Me! signing to Sire. Whether we want it to or not, being credentialed and having that access would change the voice of this blog, something none of us are entirely comfortable with. The important distinction to make is here between a reporter and a columnist. Right now, we're positioned more in a columnist role wherein we can give opinions on the subject (however skewed and wrong they may be), rather than simply reporting unadulterated facts. While that's something that some blogs, both in the SBN family and elsewhere, aspire to, that's not really what we do here. And aside from getting a free seat at the event (again, where cheering and drinking are verboten) and just getting the credential to say we got the credential, we saw it as having very little advantage for us. And though it is better to get an in-person account of a sporting even in certain aspects, we have the advantage of Sam being at every game and me being at the vast majority of them for when that's necessary.

So, while a lot of the hockey blogging community has been all butthurt about the perceived injustice of the regulations for credentialing bloggers apparently coming down the pike, it's important to know where a given blogger is coming from when reading his or her stance on the subject. Whatever is agreed upon for granting us pantsless internet trolls access really isn't going to change what we do one scintilla, because it never really mattered to us to begin with.

If you had press credentials, would you also have player access?

If so, maybe you could just send one of you who doesn’t drink or cheer at games? Oh wait…

I'm not entirely sure

I know with the finals, it was handled more with press conferences rather than scrums or “gang-bangs” ,as they’re called in the industry, in the locker room during the regular season, so that could have had something to do with us getting the offer in the first place.

In all honesty, we never got that far into the discussions with it, so I can’t really say for certain.

It would be scary to think of you guys having access to Kaner

“So Kaner, wanna get a drink after the game? Just one quick drink…”

Remember when Kyle Farnsworth finished the season with an ERA over 7.00? That was literally partly my fault. I used to be a pretty good pool player and occasionally play late night at “Ty’s til 4” at Ashland and Addison. Kyle used to stop in there too. One night the owner introduced him to me because he wanted a good pool partner. The rest is history. Kyle and I used to close the bar most nights he was in town. The guy was literally dumber than a stone, but he was a chick magnet. I don’t think he ever got a single joke I told him, but I’ve been told I’m not funny in person ;)
Sorry fellow Cubs fans, blame me, all my friends still do.

Back on topic, I personally don’t see what would be so bad with someone affiliated with SCH having a press pass? I don’t think it would change anyone’s perception of this site. Possibly that person could write a bi-weekly column called something like “Inside the Lines” offering a more behind-the-scenes perspective of the season grind. I can’t see any of you doing that, nor would I want to, but just a thought if you ever expanded your staff. I cold also see someone volunteering to do that for free. Hint, hint. The dude was HUGE

I have a funny story about him getting into a fight with his roommate (whose sister he was sleeping with). He threw his roommate on the pool table and started punching him with his right hand. All the remaining balls were on the other side of the table so I just nonchalantly kept shooting and said to him, “Left hand, Kyle. Left hand.” He didn’t get it, but everyone else was laughing.

Then there was one time his phone rang and I answered it. I said “Kyle, it’s Dusty. He wants to make sure you’ll be there for tomorrow’s 7am practice.” Kyle didn’t get that joke either and went on a “Fuck Baker” rant.

That is absolutely awesome.

Kyle Farnsworth was the man, but he just played the wrong sport, it’s not your fault. Usually in baseball teams don’t need an enforcer that can barely play their position; his just happened to be a slightly important position.
He was kind of like having a goalie as an enforcer, like Belfour without the general puck stopping ability.

I have to disagree

I am a little confused on the credentials = having to play nice and tone it down. It is your right to have credentials and continue writing as you are. Jay Mariotti was a poor example of a columnist with credentials, but he had the right idea.

by Spinorama on Aug 27, 2010 9:21 AM CDT reply actions

True, they’re not mutually exclusive, but the instant that we write something that the Blackhawks’ press team doesn’t like, those privileges get revoked, and possibly for not just us.

Like I said above, it’s about the perception. Were we credentialed, the instant we don’t properly filet Viktor Stalberg for not backchecking on a goal to everyone’s liking here, it’s going to be “Oh what McClure, did he sign your program for you so you can’t give him a beat down?”. That’s not something we want to deal with, and honestly, it takes a lot of the fun and joy of being a fan out of it for me.

If I’m credentialed, I don’t get to be tackled in the SRO rafters when Marian Hossa scores in Game 5 against Nashville by Killion and one of my best buddies who I split my season tickets with, I have to remain stoic, and that’s not a sacrifice I’m personally willing to make. I can’t divest my emotional attachment to this team, and nor do I really want to.

It's often been said

that having credentials you do not have complete autonomy. It’s why lot’s of folks bitched – and rightly so – about the local teams owning CSN-Chicago. You can’t really go on those shows and chew out a player, manager or front office guy even if he is a complete dumb-ass and deserves a couple kidney punches.

Ever watch Chicago Tribune Live on CSN? It’s like a gnarly love fest there. Not one single original though and about as scripted as any WWE event. Puke!

I sort of like some of these states that make it so if a supermajority of jurors agree to guilt or innocence like 9-3 or 10-2 or a single holdout that verdict can move forward. Oregon does this I believe.

Now we get to foot the bill again to retry him.

I believe two states. Oregon for sure and I believe a Southern state. A liberal state as well as a conservative one.

I don’t quite know how I feel about it yet. But this is what I love about federalism. Let some of these states experiment. So far the sky hasn’t fallen.

I’m going to avoid posting on politics any further, since these posts are in response to the Mariotti comment above.

However, as a principled liberal, I find the inequities of justice across the states to be quite troublesome. If the process is unjust, then the outcome is unjust. The unanimous verdict requirement is meant to protect defendants, which I think is a good thing – many people wrongly convicted are now being locked up for crimes they didn’t commit. Why should we be more harsh on Blago than any one else?

The bill for a retrial is minimal, BTW

Don’t fall for his attorneys claiming this – every expert opinion on this case has stated that almost all of the costs have already been paid upfront – the extensive research, jury prep, etc. As for the Oregonian law, I felt the same way during the Ryan trial, and he was still convicted, with even less evidence (if memory serves). So it still works for the most part – don’t worry, he’ll get hosed if he’s stupid enough not to negotiate a plea deal (and he is that stupid/delusional, apparently).

Federal prosecution costs

are fixed items. The judge, clerks, prosecutors, etc. are all there regardless of what trial they’re doing. At most, it means we’re paying another jury and shouldering some defense cost if Blago can show he’s indigent. Pennies in the grand scheme of things. That “foot the bill to retry him” is the argument his team is trying to advance to turn public opinion.

Our Cup.

by 334Rules on Aug 27, 2010 11:12 AM CDT up reply actions

To me the biggest cost is not monetary.

It is the time spent in the courtroom and putting together another case. I don’t know how long it will take to retry Blago on all of these charges. I just think the Justice Department can make better use of their time than retrying this idiot.

Maybe, just once, someone will call me 'Sir' without adding, 'You're making a scene."

by cdz3210 on Aug 27, 2010 12:19 PM CDT up reply actions

i'm talking about the retrial.

If he’d done something more or less heinous or more or less obvious, when is it ok to say, “eh, it’s too expensive and/or time consuming to let you go”?

To me, a jury decides innocence or guilt, not an accountant. 11 people thought he was guilty – how does 1 person’s not guilty vote essentially count for more than those 11 if you let him go free without another trial?

by Katherine215 on Aug 27, 2010 12:26 PM CDT up reply actions

Other saying that it's the law,

I can’t answer why 1 juror’s vote is more important than the other 11. The government tried their case and failed to convince everyone that he was guilty. Apparently, this juror was not the only one to vote not guilty, however she was the only one who couldn’t be persuaded to change her vote.

Personally, I don’t find the types of crimes he has been accused of to be heinous and to retry this case is a waste of good time that could be spent on putting away criminals that are a threat to society.

Maybe, just once, someone will call me 'Sir' without adding, 'You're making a scene."

by cdz3210 on Aug 27, 2010 1:12 PM CDT up reply actions

It not that one vote is more important than others.

The goal was to eliminate Type 1 errors (an innocent person being wrongfully convicted). The requirement of unanimity makes Type 1 errors less likely. However, as you minimize Type 1 errors, you increase the likelihood of Type 2 errors (a guilty person not being convicted). We used to have a saying in this country that it was better for 100 guilty people to go free than for one innocent person to end up in prision. The logic was the the Almighty would take care of the guilty that fall through the cracks. However, for the most part we have gone against that principle in creating our criminal justice rules over the past 25 years. Unfortunately, as we try to minimize Type 2 errors, we create more Type 1 errors.

by stanfordron on Aug 27, 2010 1:38 PM CDT up reply actions

you didn't answer my question.

Who decides what crimes deserve to be retried and which ones don’t? What one person sees as important and worthy of retrial may not be what another person sees as important.

12 people have to make a unanimous decision about one’s innocence or guilt. you’re essentially saying the defense in a case only needs to convince one person to get their client off. Is the defendant then innocent and free to go in a murder if 11 people think the defendant killed him but one person wasn’t sure? It’s a slippery slope you’re going down if Blago isn’t retried, in my opinion

by Katherine215 on Aug 27, 2010 2:04 PM CDT up reply actions

Public Corruption

is one of those crimes which, in theory, should be able to be addressed by the deterrent factor of severe penalties and relentless prosecution.

It’s also a crime where all of us are the victim, as opposed to murder, where there are a handful of victims (the deceased and their friends/family) or drug possession, where there are (in many but not all cases) no victims.

Our Cup.

by 334Rules on Aug 27, 2010 2:18 PM CDT up reply actions

Unfortunately, the way our Justice system works

the defense’s job is considered a success if they get just the one juror to have doubts. The onus is on the prosecution to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. I don’t like it anymore than you.

Maybe, just once, someone will call me 'Sir' without adding, 'You're making a scene."

by cdz3210 on Aug 27, 2010 2:34 PM CDT up reply actions

Hard to not like the system.

Keep in mind that the state has unlimited resources to investigate and prosecute. With that kind of power, they should have a high burden. The system may not be perfect, but it’s better than any other system.

In fact, since humans are inherently imperfect, it will always be impossible to develop a perfect system for resolving human problems.

Our Cup.

by 334Rules on Aug 27, 2010 2:43 PM CDT up reply actions

I agree that our system

is the best and your point about humans being inherently imperfect is spot on. It’s good that the state has unlimited resources but I don’t care for the fact that these resources are being used for this particular retrial.

Maybe, just once, someone will call me 'Sir' without adding, 'You're making a scene."

by cdz3210 on Aug 27, 2010 3:01 PM CDT up reply actions

“the state has unlimited resources to investigate and prosecute”

That is simply not true – there are limited resources to investigate and to prosecute. Money and other investigations that may take priority limit investigations; case law and other priorities limit prosecution.

by Legendary on Aug 27, 2010 3:14 PM CDT up reply actions

In relative terms

the resources are unlimited.

Yes, there are budgetary constraints, and of course you can’t charge someone without a basis in fact and law. But I think this is a bit of a nit you’re picking.

by Legendary on Aug 27, 2010 3:25 PM CDT up reply actions

Well

if you prefer, I can use the more prevalent formulation: “the vast resources of the state.”

While the latter is more common in discussions of the American Criminal Justice system and its roots, the former is not unheard of. I should think a political scientist would be aware of that usage and not try to use picayune semantics to obscure the underlying point.

But,
“a”

Our Cup.

by 334Rules on Aug 27, 2010 3:33 PM CDT up reply actions

Again, the vast resources of the state simply cannot be committed to a given investigation or prosecution. Simply doesn’t happen in the United States.

Saying “a political scientist should know this” is not very convincing and is kind of insulting.

But the federal government still is unwilling and unable to commit endless resource to this.

by Legendary on Aug 27, 2010 3:39 PM CDT up reply actions

how do you know?

wouldn’t this be a priority for them? They seem to have invested a lot of money into the investigation already; to leave without a conviction seems like an even worse way to have spent the money.

(I am asking not trying to argue – yes, I actually don’t always mean to argue)

by Katherine215 on Aug 27, 2010 3:43 PM CDT up reply actions

The Department of Justice has abandoned several past investigations (Tom DeLay, for example). In terms of abandoning trials, I’m speculating.

I know you don’t mean to argue – your posts are well reasoned, and if I did feel like you were arguing, I simply wouldn’t post. Fortunately, a diverse set of ideas is welcome here.

The smartass in me

would say “well then we’re even”.

But I should point out here that I’m not the one insulting you. No less than Alan Dershowitz has made the exact argument I’m making. And he was merely echoing many who have gone before him. The “vast resources of the state” or “unlimited resources of the state” is the very basis for the panoply of rights afforded defendants in the US criminal justice system.

Here’s a CliffNotes article, which I found with a quick google search after we launched into this debate, which provides a stepping-off point for a more detailed discussion.

I asked her several times to give me some hints on this and not only would she not even play 20-questions, she said she could lose her license if anything ever got out.

Thank you very much. It is outrageous that she would be bullied by members of the jury. If that was the case she should have informed the Judge.

She seems quite sincere so that makes me (slightly) less angry about the situation. I hope the prosecution takes her comments about ranting into consideration when preparing for re-trial.

While a lot of people think he did something wrong,

this should be a much harder case to prove. Politicans get money in exchange for supporting their positions on issues. That is not illegal (even if the issue is who to appoint to the Senate). For this alleged crime, the government has to prove a specific tit for tat. I do not think their evidence is sufficient to do that (probably because they jumped the gun. I think there was going to be a tit for tat but the government prevented.) Unfortuately in our country today jurors are prone to do what prosecutors tell them to do. Bravo to the one juror who actually wanted evidence of a tit for tat. [But the real lesson for all you young hockey players out there is never, never lie to the police. That is what they get you on (it is much easier than proving the underlying crime). Just keep your mouth shut.

Same exact argument heard many times before

Heard it during the Ryan trial – same deal, it always happens, business as usual, blah, blah, blah. This is the type of thinking and MO that has led our state to its present morass. This is not “something that’s just part of politics in IL” unless you want this kind of crap to continue forever, with your tax dollars funding massive political corruption year after year, generation after generation. I’ve lived here for almost 50 years of my entire life, and I’m beyond sick of it.

The corrupt politicos count on this attitude, and it’s part and parcel of why they continue to act this way, and all to often get off. Not anymore, time to end this behavior…now.

I'm happy you guys

were offered the credentials because I think it’s well-deserved, and I think you could have made a good decision either way.

It irritates me that bloggers are held to a different standard than a columnist, in that people believe bloggers supposedly don’t have any accountability and can say what they want, yet a columnist like Rosenbloom can call for the job of any and all managers or coaches in this town and still claim credibility (and access) because he writes for the Tribune.

by Katherine215 on Aug 27, 2010 9:33 AM CDT reply actions

Going to disagree here. He calls for Lovie’s head all the time for the last two years. Frankly, he was a year late in arriving at that conclusion as far as I am concerned. Lou Piniella was a joke and a disgrace and this was apparent as early as the end of last season.

I don’t see anything wrong with saying things that are blatantly obvious. Lovie Smith is only the coach of the Bears because there is going to be a lockout next season and he was right on Lou as far as Im concerned too.

I have never seem him call for Ozzie and he certainly never called on Q or Savard to get the axe.

sorry, I didn't phrase that well, as usual

I meant it’s not fair that a columnist can make these statements and still be considered credible, but when a blog does it, the writer loses credibility. I definitely don’t have a problem with either a columnist or a blogger stating their opinion or calling out someone on a team, I just don’t think it’s right that a columnist can do it and no one bats an eye.

As for Rosenbloom, he beat the Fire-Lovie horse to a bloody pulp, and pretty much did the same with Lou. I don’t disagree with many of his thoughts on them, but I get tired of his fixation on blaming those two for both teams’ failures. Dude is rarely anything other than negative and critical about all teams.

I didn’t say he’d called for the firing Q/Savy or Ozzie, though he has criticized Ozzie, just that he can and still be respected, or at least credible.

Best blogger post was because they had a press pass

As always, you are entitled to your opinion. However, imo, nothing about a press pass would mean you would have to change your approach to how you write.

Personally, I didn’t think much of the Flyer’s bloggers with one exception. And that exception had to do with him having a press pass. Travis wrote an awesome article on his feelings when “watching the Hawks Celebrate winning the Cup on the Flyers home rink.”

He wrote that article from a “blogger’s” fan perspective and not a neutral journalistic point of view. Nothing about it was in any way negatively affected by his having the pass. And the truth was, he probably couldn’t have written it if he hadn’t had the pass to actually be there.

So sorry, but press pass does NOT equal being neutral. And it should have NO effect on anyone’s behavior when they aren’t using it.

I think one of McClure's points is

that even if he wanted to sacrifice cheering and drinking, and even if it didn’t affect his writing, the credentials could and probably would be revoked if they didn’t “play nice.”

I think the point McClure makes is reasonable

But I also understand Dale’s point. Unless you’re so impetuous that you can’t refrain from cursing and getting drunk, I don’t think having a press pass definitively alters how you need to watch the game. This post just seems a bit self-congratulatory to me.

I think being a fan for some people is all about being impetuous

Just look at some of the arguments that arise here.

I’m actually a pretty mellow person in real life and could handle not drinking or cheering passionately at a game for the trade-off, but I don’t think that’s for everyone. If McClure et al feel that being in the press box ruins the experience of acting like fans, which they have positioned themselves as first and foremost, then I understand and completely agree with their decision. Not that it matters what I think – and that’s a point they’ve made in the past. If they bowed to my opinion, or yours, or to what “proper credentialed behavior” dictates, then they’ve already watered down the content and purpose of this site. Just my two cents.

I think I’m just sensitive to this “fan’s perspective” because I used to love reading Bill Simmons. He writes for ESPN and always wrote from a fan’s perspective. Hated the press box, hated the locker room scene.

But, he unfortunately loved reminding people of this too often, and I became disenchanted with his writing. I don’t think the writers here are guilty of this, and I just don’t want to see it become that way

I was hoping the Kings would land Kovie, too. Partly because I feel like the Kings’ story was really slept on last season, and partly because I enjoyed watching their tough, pounding effort against Vancouver. I love their jerseys, too.

The addition of Willie Mitchell instantly makes the Kings less likable; the Canucks, on the other hand, should be more interesting with Dan Hamhuis (and a potentially weaker Nashville, too).

As it presupposes that anyone out there would actually want to take time out to read the thoughts that are falling out of the writer’s skull, so yes, this post is self-congratulatory.

None of us got into this to be journalists or behave like them. To accept a credential drastically alters the dynamic of this site, both at face value and likely in content. I’m a fan, I get emotional during games. Additionally, this is not my livelihood, this is recreation for me. Being able to have a beer or twelve at a game is what keeps me from offing myself at my 9 to 5. A lot of what I write is based on what I feel at the time regarding a game or a situation, specifically in the aftermath. With the game wraps, if I’m forced to be more business-like while viewing the game, I feel that a lot of what fuels the content I produce here would be muted. You might view it as a chicken shit way out, and I can’t help that. There are already enough places for you to read things from people with credentials.

Well articulated and reasonable

Just wanted to say I support the writers on this issue. Thought McClure’s post made a lot of sense. Never want to damage a good thing.

Maybe Chicago doesn’t need a mainstream, intelligent Blackhawks writer. I check my favorite hockey blogs on SB Nation, read The Hockey News, TSN, ESPN, and Puck Prospectus/Corey Pronman – and feel fairly well informed. I enjoy hockey having an outsider status here – to a certain extent – because it takes a true, passionate fan to understand what’s going on.

My friends – and Chicago sports media – can stick with the NBA and NFL, and that’s quite alright with me. I’d hate for anything to jeopardize the passion the people of this blog have for the 2010 Champion Hawks.

But I completely understand their concern about the perception that some might have if they did take the credentials. It’s the perception of impropriety that you want to avoid. (And of course the reality of remaining sober at a hockey game that you really want to avoid!)

As the media barons are learning all too slowly, these days all kinds of sources for information and commentary are flourishing, and they can’t stop it anymore, no matter how hard they try. There was a time when the Blue Line was the only real entertainment there

That’s how bad it was – I read it cover to cover (such as it was) during most of the games. They bottomed out amazing quickly after the Finals in ’92.

by Waylon on Aug 27, 2010 7:35 PM CDT up reply actions

The Blue Line was shut down because Mark Weinberg (the creator) fought the Hawks tooth and nail for media access. He wanted it and Wirtz refused to give it. He took them to court but it was an uphill battle as Wirtz could just keep throwing money into the case while Weinberg couldn’t.

So the CI won’t get shut down unless Sam and co. decide they can’t operate anymore without access to the players which we all see clearly isn’t the case.

I hate it when someone uses the phrase “PIN Number” or “ATM Machine” (bank machine/hole-in-the-wall, I think you call it something different in the U.S.) because it highlights that someone is using an acronym without fully understanding what it actually means.

However, online & in texts, I think it’s acceptable because a) you’re trying to save space/type less and b) the full meaning is literally 10 seconds away if you just Google it or whatever.

Actually, Bourne has mentioned on several occasions that Yotes office

was pissed at him because he made a couple of sarcastic “what, you think the Yotes have a chance?” or “wow, empty building much?” comments toward the beginning of the season. It’s actually a pretty good example of what the SCH guys are talking about; Bourne was never credentialed, but he knows people in hockey because of his pedigree and apparently there was a bit of friction when he didn’t toe the team’s party line on the blog. Relations between Coyotes PR and bloggers have apparently been frosty on several fronts.

Not that anyone cares

but I’m in a fortunate position in that I am both a season ticket holder and a credentialed member of the media, so I have the ability to turn it on and off as necessary. I like having the best of both worlds…some games I can watch with a more studious eye, while the others I can let loose and cheer and scream.

But I’m glad that McClure is self-aware to know the rules of being up there and how it’s not for him. I’ve seen too many people in other pressboxes (not so much the Hawks) not fully grasp that concept, and it really makes for an awkward situation.

I still unabashedly love Against Me!

I never got all bent out of shape when they signed to Sire, but that has more to do with the fact I was a bit late to the party with them. I started with Searching For A Former Clarity, so the more produced sound of New Wave didn’t bother me as much as the hardcore fans from the Crime As Forgiven By days.

I’m a sucker for the Springsteen-inspired sound, so I fucking love White Crosses. I’ve been rotating this and the new Gaslight in my car for the commute.

I thought they broke up a long time ago, but your link says they reunited in ’02 and came out with another album – I’ll check that out. “Crawl Space” is one of my favorite 80’s punk songs.

I never really got into the politics of the anarchy scene like a good number of my friends but I did like a good deal of music from that time, like Aus-Rotten/Behind Enemy Lines and Tragedy. However, I never gave up on personal hygiene like some of the crust punx.

I’d trust her to be able to maintain proper behavior over our 3 alcoholics leaders.

For the record, Sassone is usually pretty good in reporting, Rosenbloom is often good because he’s brutally honest (and gives hilarious cheap shots), but this site is the best place to get the best hockey analysis and the most honest appraisal of player performances. Other than the occasional irrational player hate (Sam and Buff, for example) this blog is simply the most intelligent Blackhawks coverage there is.

Sorry, that should read “Stanley Cup Champion Blackhawks coverage.”

And the press people can’t cheer or celebrate? It’s sucks to be them.

As a member of media......

(but not one that covers professional sports too often anymore in Chicago)

Watching a game as a fan vs watching the game as a photographer (like I do) is two different worlds. You have a job to do and nothing should get in the way of that job. I was on the street for the Hawks rally and biggest memory is not seeing the cup or the jubilation of the crowd. I remember watching the people jump the barriers and the CPD failing at crowd containment which made me miss pictures that my paper wanted (and i damn near got trampled because of a few mouth breathers).

I still made great pictures and had fun, but it’s different being a fan when you have to produce something.

If bloggers want to be credentialed, fine, go ahead. The big issue will be perception, so any fuck-up is going to get blown out of proportion. It’s a very fine line the bloggers will have to walk the first year or so. It will be hard and I hope whoever takes it remembers that with great credentials comes great responsibility (and mediocre food in the press box.)

I can't figure out your most important reason for declining the pass

Is it because you want to act like a fan and can’t do that in the press box?
Is it because you’re afraid of the shunning and dissing by traditional media types?
Is it the “perception” problem among readers?
Is it that you’re worried about having it revoked if you don’t produce content approved by the team?

I wish you’d do it. Your readers give you feedback constantly so you’ll know if they think you’re selling out. If the Blackhawks revoke your pass because you say something they don’t like that makes them look idiots, not you. And spending time with peers who don’t like or respect you isn’t fun but on the other hand it is fun to see them all red-faced and spitting about how bloggers aren’t journalists.

I’m appealing to your sense of duty and suggesting it’s a challenge. You built something and people have shown up. Elevate. Break rules, or better yet create a new game. Look at what Hunter Thompson did for sports journalism. He was a renegade and completely irresponsible but look at what he contributed. Newspapers are sclerotic and new models are being worked out. Be part of what’s next.

Oh, and from someone who worked in newsrooms for 16 years and started off as a sports clerk, I can assure you that most sports journalists are fans with a press pass. They are the most compromised of journalists, who work out their jock issues by alternately praising and trashing players just like fans do. In my experience about one in five of them don’t fall into this trap. Why do you think the baseball steroids thing got out of control? You expect athletes to do everything to win and for the leagues to be complicit as long as they don’t get nailed themselves. The press didn’t do its job because they’re hero worshipers.

I also think the idea that blogs are essentially “self-congratulatory” is an incomplete truth and, in the case of this blog it’s crap. A blog is self-congratulatory and nothing else only if nobody wants to read it. This blog apparently serves an important purpose for many people, and beyond the regular flow of excellent content – comradeship, consolation, enabling of substance abuse, approbation of sexual deviance, etc.
Do you think newspapers aren’t self-congratulatory for the egos of the people who think they are qualified to determine what entire urban populations should know and believe? Isn’t this comment self-congratulatory?

If you want to be a fan at the rink that’s cool. If you don’t want to worry about a player taking a swing at you because you called him a cocksucker in a post I suppose that makes sense too. But otherwise it feels like you’re buying into received definitions and boundaries, and that sucks. I want you to take the pass and figure out how to make this site even better without losing its angle.

by flyersfaninchicago on Sep 1, 2010 9:42 AM CDT reply actions

Maybe this is it?

It’s always after hitting the “Post” button that I realize I took half a page to miss the whole point:

It’s the “fan” that’s pure, not the “journalist.” Taking a press pass means giving up being a fan. You can’t work around that. You’re just not going to call a player an idiot if you talk to him after every game, and that’s just one example. The boundary between “blogger” and “journalist” is crap but between “fan” and “journalist” is not.

So there are a few of you here, right? (I don’t give a shit about the Blackhawks so I don’t really read the posts much except for that lunatic who does statistical analysis that inspire awe – I’m here to read the comments because I think your audience is a riot and full of smart people and the women are sexy). Anyway, have one of you be the “reporter.” Or bring someone else on. The rest of you can keep being fans and there’s distance between what the “journalist” does and says, and the rest of you.
