Keep Their Heads Ringin' - Continuing Our Preview of the 2010-2011 Chicago Blackhawks
As we're getting closer and closer to the season and at least pretend hockey games are being played, the outlook for the upcoming season is becoming ever clearer. One player that has put his best foot forward to this point has apparently been Igor Makarov, about whose chances of a roster spot Kelly Reardon wonders:
I’m completely on the Igor Makarov bandwagon after seeing him at camp. What are the odds he actually makes the big club?
Well, unfortunately, Kelly, I can't totally share your sentiment, as I didn't attend any of the weekend's festivities. But from all outward reports, Makarov has seriously impressed with both his skating ability and nose for the net. Of course, this has all been against rookie competition (Makarov just turned 23 Sunday), as well as only scrimmages against his fellow teammates. His performance against other teams during the preseason will dictate where he'll end up come October 7, but even to this point, he's at least merited serious playing time during those games to find out, which I think he'll certainly be given the opportunity to. Makarov's skill set is obviously more top-6 than elsewhere, but the Hawks are somewhat unique in how skilled their third line is, so if Makarov can crack the top-9, he'll more than likely stay with the big club. I know I sound like a broken record regarding some of these prospects, but having him play fourth line minutes doesn't serve him or the team much good. His speed, shiftyness, and scoring touch are far better suited either flanking Sharp or Bolland. Furthermore, Stan Bowman has positioned his team to have a fairly high number of modular parts to round out the bottom of the roster, both in role and in salary, so if Makarov continues to play at a level that forces Bowman and Quenneville to keep him here, they'll be able to do so, rather than the ridiculous Jack Skille and Cam Barker Rockford shuffles of years past. So, if you were looking for a quantifiable answer for this question, I'd say probably a little bit better than a coinflip at 55-60%, but there can't be any let-up in Makarov's game.
HawkVision has yet another solid question regarding Marty Turco:
How quickly will Turco’s puck-handling skillz (yeah, with a "z") paired with Dunc and Soupy’s breakout ability, become "a thing"?
While we definitely emphasized this as being a clear advantage Turco had over Antti Niemi when Turco was signed based on the style of game the Hawks played, I tried then and will continue to emphasize now that it won't be the series of 90-foot home run passes on every line change that it's being made out to be. Yes, Marty Turco is arguably the best puck-handling goalie in the league right now (and maybe ever, despite not having a goal to his credit), and that will certainly allow for smoother transitions on breakouts, and not to mention save the Hawks defensemen from the physical toll that can be exacted on them from having to retrieve pucks all game long from their own end boards. In the playoffs, the most effective counter to the Hawks' transition was free-beer-and-pussy-behind-the-Hawks-net forecheck from the opposition, employed most effectively by Nashville and Philly. Having Turco back there certainly dulls that down, as the defensemen will less frequently have to put themselves in a position to be pummeled. But perhaps thing we'll see most as a result of Turco's puck handling abilities as they contribute to this team will be how they act as a deterrent. Opposing forwards entering the zone will be far more reluctant to just dump the puck in deep, as Turco will be awaiting it to fire a pass back up ice with those forwards caught deep. This will lead to those same forwards attempting to carry the puck over the Hawk blue line, which due to the quality of the Hawks' top 4 defensemen, will frequently lead to the puck being knifed away, or the play resulting in an offside call due to an extra move or the forward being forced to slow up. The only consistent way I've seen to avoid the perils of a puck-moving goalie, especially after the lockout due to the trapezoid, is the cross-ice dump in, as Turco will not be able to retrieve it from the corner, and nor will he have the opportunity to stop it as it's wrung around. However, that takes quite a bit of hockey awareness on the puck carrier's part, as well as even a split second's worth of time longer than a standard chip in, as well as his far-side winger to be on the same page and busting his ass to get to that puck first before a Hawk defenseman does. If having Turco back there turns every dump in into a 50/50 puck at the very worst, the Hawks will be in fantastic shape. So, after all that bloviating, the answer to your question is "very quickly, but not in as direct a way as it's being portrayed, even though those types of opportunities will be there".
If there's a topic out there that we haven't exhausted yet, let us know and we'll try to address it, but as the season draws ever nearer, we'll also need more questions should you have them. But the most important part of all of this? There will be an actual hockey game (whose results are admittedly 165% arbitrary) to discuss tomorrow.

Thanks for answering the question guys. Pretty much matches my thoughts. I certainly don’t want him playing fourth line minutes, but I hope he can crack the team. He was a lot of fun to watch.

Calgary @ Vancouver is being streamed on the Canucks website.
Other feeds will probably pop up sooner to game time. I know that Sportsnet One is showing the Vancouver @ Calgary game (yes, Cal and Van are playing two games at the same time, one in Van and one in Cal), so there’s a good chance that one will be available too. If you live in Leafs region, their official site is streaming the Sens@Leafs game.

Dumb question
what is a cross-ice dump in? When you dump it to the opposite corner of the side you’re coming up?
Correct
Often times as more of a hoist or lob dump in for this particular purpose, to get the puck to die in that corner while not allowing the goalie to play it.

I’m still curious about our triumvirate’s thoughts on Bolland’s spot this year. Do you see him playing full-time at 3rd line center? Is the 2nd line really an option? I know quite a few commenters would like to see Bolly on the 2nd line, but do we really have guys to fill in the bottom lines then? Aside from Dowell (who I assume will hold down the 4th line), I know Beach and Kop have played at center in the past. Is Potulny a legitimate 3rd or 4th line center option if he makes the team?

Potulny isn’t really an option, because you lose a lot of the defensive awareness that Bolland and Sharp bring at the pivot. If Bolland is moved to the 2nd line, he’s going to be asked to score more, and Sharp will be expected to do the same, and it will be at the expense of their defensive responsibilities. Potulny hasn’t shown enough by way of 2-way play to be entrusted with that role yet, if at all, particularly because he has historically been BRUTAL at the dot.
Second City Hockey

I think it also remains to be seen
whether Q will continue to try to line up our third line against the other team’s top line or whether he chooses to match-up ones v. ones, twos v. twos, etc. If he goes with our third line defending against the other team’s first line (like he did two years ago with Bolly, Havlat and Ladd and in the playoffs this past season), then Bolland has to be the third line center. If we are going for the straight 1/1, 2/2 match-up. then Bolland should probably be on the second line.

As much as many of us want Sharp on wing -
It looks like Toews, Sharp – Bolland as 1-2-3 centers, with I-don’t-know on 4.
Is Makarov playing left or right wing? Just curious.
I cannot wait until tomorrow night! Versteeg is coming back on, brb…
My Father's name is Jack, and my Mother's name is Daniels...
Look for Dowell in the middle on 4
And according to Kucs he’s a lefty, which means he’ll line up at right wing.

FYI, that is only a general rule and typically doesn't apply to Russian players
Igor is actually a righty, but yes, he plays right wing.

Huh.
I knew that some players play on the off side, but I didn’t know that lack of correlation for handedness was a Russian thing. Product of different ice and more European-style systems, or just different social conditioning w/r/t handedness and stick selection? I wonder.
by spokeinthebandwagon on Sep 21, 2010 8:46 PM CDT up reply actions
Supposedly it’s a product of the system/style. Personally I prefer playing the off wing, but each style has its advantages/disadvantages.
And apparently you were correct regarding Igor. My bad. I should’ve remembered the golden rule: Believe half of what you see and none of what you hear read.

North American players are typically L on LW, R on RW - Europeans are more often playing the off-wing
I am not sure quite why, but I suspect come of it is the wider ice surfaces in Europe and differing training emphasis there.

remind me again:
a left handed shot is someone who’s right hand is at the top of the stick right? Even after that whole handedness conversation in the spring, I still get confused. And it may have nothing to do with which hand they write with, right?

to your first questin: yes
in my experience, it’s more likely for a righty to play hockey lefty (my son) and vice versa (my brother).

by cliffkoroll on Sep 22, 2010 11:51 AM CDT up reply actions
That's strange
It seems to me (admittedly, I’ve never picked up a hockey stick in my life) like if you’re naturally right-handed, you’d be able to generate more power with your right hand in the middle of the shaft, & hence would play righty.
yes, this blew my mind
when gmh’s Right-Catching goalies fanpost generated the conversation about handedness. I think krome had a good explanation of the “why” this is done in the comments.
by Katherine215 on Sep 22, 2010 12:27 PM CDT up reply actions
power difference is negligible
but the top hand is the “fine control of the stick” hand
Confusion will be my epitaph.
It's a question of preference.
I am right-handed, and shoot right as well. I was always told that right-handers should shoot left and vice versa, but that’s all BS.
Rightys who shoot right enjoy more power with their hand lower on the stick, but with arguably less accuracy, because your weaker hand is at the top, where most of your control/guidance is. There’s a trade-off no matter how you shoot.
I'm right handed and shoot lefty as well
Like most righties I have more strength on the right side. My left side isn’t as strong and is more limber and faster. I find have more accuracy and control shooting left handed. It’s like a right handed boxer leading with their left or how a right handed guitar player uses their left hand on a fret board
Maybe, just once, someone will call me 'Sir' without adding, 'You're making a scene."
if you're shooting correctly, most power comes from the flex of the stick
if the swing of the lower hand is your power, then you’re doing it wrong
Confusion will be my epitaph.
I shoot lefty
but prefer the right side.

it will have more impact on developing play or style of opposing team play than it will on long breakout passes from goalie to forward for a beakaway (there may be a couple of those, but it will still be rather uncommon)

Bolly and Kopy staying home?
Interesting. I hope Bolly’s back is okay. I’m fine if Q is leaving him home because he knows where Bolly will fit in the lineup, but seeing him not on the list makes me worry for his health. (Especially since he’s a center who will need to be auditioning new wingers. If we don’t see them together in the preseason, then… what? They figure out the line by telepathy? Oh wait, it’s Q. If it doesn’t work, he can shuffle. Right.)

Relax, bud. Its the 1st game of the Pre-Season
Nothing to get too worried about if he isn’t playing tomorrow since there are a LOT of new faces wanting to show off for the brass so they can stick around a little while longer.
I understand your concern about Bolly’s back, but I trust what ZLionHawk was trying to do and be as objectionable as possible in analyzing all Blackhawk Camp Members (even tho it was only one-day’s evaluation).
That being said, it seemed as if Bolland was playing fairly well from what was reported… that or ZLionHawk is simply exaggerating just so as to keep you from clawing at the walls ;)
Personally, I wouldn’t worry if I were you and would rather just be stoked off my ass that Chicago Blackhawk Hockey is about to start in a matter of hours!!!

Question:
Will you guys have the CI available for Saturday night’s preseason home opener against the fuckwads from Detroit?
Also FUCK DETROIT

when I posted it
I sent Killion an email as a heads up (didn’t want SCH to get in any trouble). Once he saw the email, he responded that they do get in trouble sometimes with that kind of content, so he took it down.
The ESPN insider stuff requires a subscription, whereas the regular stuff obviously doesn’t.

Yes, stupid legal stuff, but relevant.
This isn’t necessarily ESPN. There’s a good chance that the Alcoholics or the SBNation staff made this choice on their own, which they had every right to do. The fanpost quoted an article that was restricted to subscribing members in its entirety. It had issues.
I actually would be shocked if ESPN had time enough to know anything about this. They get intellectual property violations every day. I’m guessing that this was one of those things corrected in advance of needing an actual legal injunction to figure out.
And god knows I’m a fan of this team, but whoever took the article down did the legally right thing.

I didn't actually think that
ESPN asked for the article to be taken down. I understood the legal ramifications of posting it when Hack put it up, I just don’t like that ESPN makes some of its articles restricted to subscribing members.

right
like they don’t make enough money. I refuse to sign up for their Insider stuff just on principle.
And why the hell am I paying for cable (or satellite) when there are commercials still? This ain’t the 50’s when that shit could be picked up by antenna for free!

I refused to pay for it at first
but then I decided to split it with another guy and we both use the account (multiple people can be logged on at once, shhhh). It ended up being like $30 for the year, which is well worth it for the amount of insider stuff I read about hockey. You get a subscription to the magazine with it, and I have the electronic version sent to me; the size (dimensions) of ESPN’s print magazine is just obnoxious. There’s really no reason they can’t scale their magazine down to the size of an SI, I think they do it just to be different.

There are now companies
that specialize in enforcing copyrights. Several cases going on with the LV Review Journal right now. For all you lawyers out there, it looks like the Court is going to allow the alleged infringers to use an implied consent defense.

implied consent defense
implied consent to redistribute publications? or to re-package/re-word the contents and republish?

I'll take that...
The Langstrom wrench works wonders on a broken kanuten valve. In fact, almost like it’s made for it.

I am not sure of all the facts.
The most watched of all the cases is Sharon Angle (the Republican/Tea Party candidate for Senate) used part of one of their articles on her website. Her lawyers are claiming that by placing the article on a free website, the RJ consented to it being freely copied and used. The obvious problem is the website the RJ placed it on for “free” contained advertising (from which they derived revenue).
