Candy On The 6-4, Leather Guts and Fish Bowl - Knowledge Gained From Last Night's Hawks/'Ning Exhibition

Alright, I know we told you not to read too much into the empirical results of last night's pre-season opener between the Blackhawks and Lightning, and we're going to try to avoid that pitfall here. But that doesn't mean that there weren't some things to be taken away from last night. Here are some of those things.

  • After all the hype coming into the game, Igor Makarov at least didn't look out of place for the most part. He put himself in a more than a few prime scoring chances during the opening period, and looked like an adult during the first power play. However, from that point after, I have to say I was expecting to notice him a bit more, but the steady stream of Hawk penalties likely kept him from seeing more ice, as it doesn't seem Quenneville is considering him much for PK duty.
  • Speaking of the PK, Jack Skille looks like he might be useful in that role, as he showed some good positioning and even led a short handed rush going the other way against a Tampa power play unit that was stuffed to the tits with regulars.
  • Also related to penalty killing, Fernando Pisani looked solid out there, and he certainly wasn't lacking opportunities both short handed and at even strength, though that may have been a function of consistently seeing the ice with Patrick Sharp, who was the best Hawk last night by a pretty sizeable margin. Coach Q may have found his new blankie now that Sopel is gone.
  • Viktor Stalberg was underwhelming, though admittedly the puck didn't find him much. When it did, he was robbed blind by the suddenly impregnable Cedrick Desjardins. And please for the love of god don't make him take any more draws. Evan Brophey, I'm looking in your direction. Brophey was seemingly tossed from every faceoff he was supposed to participate in.
  • Jeremy Morin was all over the place last night, in a good way. One thing I was impressed by was his ability to create his own shot, which he did deftly on a couple of occasions in the second period- once cutting to the middle of the ice from the left wing on a rush, and the other walking out from the right corner.
  • Nick Boynton is still a meat bag. And while that was an instigator from Blair Jones, Boynton did stick his leg out on that attempted hip check in neutral ice that preceded the fight, which could have been a nasty knee-on-knee hit. Boynton is also apparently going to get a pee-pee slap for his Harry Connick Jr. in Copycat impersonation after the fight.

Nick Boynton hipchecks Chris Durno and Fights Blair Jones (via NHLArchive)

  • It's weird to see Simon Gagne in a Lightning sweater
  • Nick Leddy looked good in the offensive zone, and didn't commit any hate crimes against my hockey sensibilities in the defensive zone, which is about all you can hope for in a 19-year old offensively-inclined defenseman in his first action ever against grown ass men (yes, despite his height, I'm including Martin St. Louis in that set). On the other hand...
  • It's somewhat comforting to know that with all that's happened since we last saw him in a Hawks sweater and all the roster upheaval, Jassen Cullimore hasn't changed a bit.
  • Oh, and Marty Turco looked fine. He got bailed out by a couple of posts, but looked athletic and comfortable out there, particularly moving the puck. And if Brian Connolly can figure out what is possible in getting breakout passes from Turco, imagine the possibilities with Duncan Keith and Brian Campbell

I think a sufficient mountain has been made out of this molehill, and we'll have even more to talk about once we finally get to see the ravenous-timber-wolf-on-angel-dust Kyle Beach against pro competition this weekend.

awww, first toewsface!

Sharp was— he realizes his spot on the roster is pretty much a given, right? Although I’m convinced he, Kaner, and Tazer have some sort of pre-season race for the most goals or something, and he was just trying to get a head start.

Morin + drop passes = love. Even though I’ve only really seen him do them twice so far. Sample size, what?

Honestly, more and more I’m feeling— not confident, really, but comfortable— with the team we’re going to ice this season. I’m not going to be all “REPEAT OR BUST!!!” but I’m definitely comfortable. There’s a little bit of excitement that goes into getting to know new players and seeing what they can do for the team.

Yay, it’s almost October!

I predict another season of dead puppies

based on what I saw of the PP last night. Admittedly, I didn’t tune in ’til the 3rd period (damn responsibilities). But once again a 5-3 — no wait — SIX on three — goes for naught.

The second thing I did notice was that Capt Serious seems to be all about sending a message that the Hawks intend to bring it.

Otherwise, I don’t put too much stock in pre-season games. They’re really just glorified scrimmages.

See, I thought the power play moved the puck really well when they had their chances, particularly for it being a a garbled mess of personnel. They seemed to be working more of the action from the half-wall/circle and goal line, which is what we’ve been repeatedly calling for.

And while they do need to score on ONE of those chances, keep in mind too that Tampa had far more of their regulars playing, especially at forward.

From what I gather, that’s the starting lineup for this season for Tampa Bay which is really puzzling considering it was their first pre-season game. Then again, Boston left Raask to face 38 shots which I have no idea why in the first game of “practice hockey”.

I totally agree with you on the PP. They looked like they had a “gameplan” and a possible “idea” of what they were trying to do with giving Toews the puck down-low, which was something everyone here was pleading for last season. For me, the SOG where more indicative of the PP last night.

Actually, TB played Dallas Tuesday night, so this was their second preseason game. They played all their no-names against the Stars, and they brought out their regulars against the Hawks. Perhaps an indication of how TB sees the skill level of the two teams.

by TracyJean on Sep 23, 2010 10:17 AM CDT up reply actions

Hmmm…. that’s interesting. 3 games in 3 nights to start the pre-season and they play all their regulars in one game and roster spots in the other 2? Puzzling to say the least, but if that’s the Bolts strategy then good for them I guess.

Speaking of strategy’s, someone needs to remind Stamkos that his one-timer/ slapshot at the top of the dot isn’t going to work with much regularity as it did last season. Everyone has caught onto it with Cullimore blocking one of them, and if he sniff it out ….

Don’t get me wrong, I’ll watch it, and it’ll probably be entertaining as fuck, but when the non-hockey-hardcore public is continually fed the same players over and over again, it’s not any mystery why the game still remains a provincial sport.

That, and the next interesting thing that Crosby says will be the first. But at least we’ll get an even more uncensored look at Max Talbot calling Ovie a douche.

Are they going to remove the choke-collars from around the Capitals necks so that they can talk?

I’m really interested to see a Capitals practice and how Boudreau tries to teach Mike Green how to play defence … or anybody on that team really.

The Talbot and OV thing may be the only interesting thing to document, unless HBO decides to follow up on the Semin comments of 2 years ago. I’d love nothing more than to see Crosby try to explain why he should be as “exciting” as Patrick Kane and see the GWG of Game 6 over and over again.

you don’t think the Crosby vs Ovi hype will draw casual fans? I guess I’ve always figured that’s why the NHL insists on shoving them down our collective throats.

by chiblackhawks on Sep 23, 2010 10:59 AM CDT up reply actions

Oh, I know they will

But it’s just unfortunate that the NHL by and large doesn’t seem to give a fuck about its existing die hard fan base, and only care about courting people that barely care, because they know we aren’t going to go anywhere. It’s like cell phone and cable companies offering new customers sweet introductory offers, while the consistent customers continually get porked by their monthly bill.

I guess I misunderstood the sentiment behind the comment

I thought you meant the casual fans won’t be drawn in by the continuous parade of Crosby and Ovechkin on their TV screens. (in particular, “but when the non-hockey-hardcore public is continually fed the same players … it’s not any mystery why the game still remains a provincial sport.”)

I think I’ve become immune to the Crosby and Ovi show, personally. It’s just better for my blood pressure that way. The Winter Classic’s already going to be between Pens and Caps whether we like it or not, so I don’t see why the NHL shouldn’t take the opportunity to pimp that out for all it’s worth. Might as well, right?

But that's what happens when you have a

complete ass clown of a commish and a league front office that has no fucking clue how to market its product. I guess its what to expect from an NBA reject; who’s former league ALWAYS prioritizes the player over the team. It’s Koby and the Lakers or LeBron and the (was) Cavs.

The NHL was starting to go down the right road with Dead Things @ Blackhawks in 2009. They should have worked with NBC to get Leafs @ Rangers in 2010 in the last game at the old Yankee Stadium, followed by this coming January of Habs @ B’s in Fenway.

They only got the B’s in Fenway part right. This league has to sell its heritage first and what better way than the Original Six. I don’t really think it’s that hard to sell Canadian teams to the US. We can’t be ignorant all the time. The league could have a 2nd game that day but they fuck that up too by having an isolated Canadian-only game a month+ later. There won’t be big US coverage of that game. Why? Because the league offices are full of a bunch of dumb-asses.

The reason the league is looked at as a provincial sport is because the league markets itself that way. As long as they continue this silo mentality with the public, media outlets and communities the NHL will be looked at as only a niche product. Morons, fucking morons…

Just win the next game...!

Excellent write-up

in that it confirmed my own impressions.

The D is gonna have to work with Marty on positioning etc. after dump-ins.

Between the time Tampa took a 2-1 lead and the Hawks tied it, Toews was a force of nature. Ominous sight for non-Blackhawk fans.

I agree

However, I did think, and could be very very wrong, that Leddy isn’t quite ready yet. Also, I thought Skille was taking some faceoffs for Brophey. Then again, the massive influx of new numbers and names had me terribly confused for quite a while, so I may have missed quite a bit regarding speciific players.

by Trixietrx on Sep 23, 2010 3:47 PM CDT up reply actions

My retarded thoughts on last night:

Eventhough it was just a “practice game” there are a lot of things to cover still.

- He might be useful on the PK but that won’t win Skille a spot on this team as he was virtually invisible other than taking stupid penalties. Not a good start for him.

- Also finding themselves in the “hawks61 doghouse” are Toivenen and Cullimore. I don’t think I need to add why for both.

- Love the competitive spirit by Boynton, just not the throat-slash. This is the NHL, not WWE.

- Jeremy Morin was extremely impressive last night and played with a lot of jam. His hit in the 2nd was very reminiscent of the guy who used to wear the number 27 awhile back. Lots of offensive flair and might be one of the “suprises” to make the team if he continues.

- Goaltending problems? Turco was more than solid and looked very good last night as opposed to Halak the other night and Carey Price last night. Not suprising that Luongo got beat on 2 rebound goals last night either.

- D2K had more than a few turnovers. Get that shit out of your system now before the season starts Duncs.

- Toews, the hometown boy, nets one in his hometown rink. That in itself made the night special and at that point I didn’t care what the outcome was. That’s what the people in Winnipeg came to see and he didn’t disappoint. But has the 2010 Playoff MVP ever disappointed?

favorite sequence of the night...end of the 2nd prd

Toews is getting abused along the boards by some slapdick named Gudas – elbows Toews and has been cross checking him for about 5-10 seconds repeadetley – so the Captain knocks him back in the face after the dry hump he had just received – all the while looking down on the mere mortal and basically laughing at him – and gets sent to the box for the second time on the night. Thunderous boo’s ensue.
Later Duncs go’s on a killing spree to end the period and is barreling around the offensive zone his whole shift just to take a piece out of someone. He absolutely layed someone out and took a good piece of a couple others to finish the second period. He just looked angry. it was awesome. He almost swore (i think he only said damn but he WANTED to say fuck) during the interview with Eddie. Just was fucking great to see the guys back out there. This team is just fucking awesome to watch. sometimes even in preseason.

I didn't think Boynton's hit was so bad - he was upright and the main point of the collision looks like the hip

I was watching with my son, and he saw it the same way.

It would have been easy to miss and get a real knee to knee on that, but I didn’t think Boynton caught him that way

after watching the vid, Boynton got his ass royally kicked in that fight. And no doubt he stuck his leg out. I’m all for showing toughness, but he got it wrong on both ends. A) a dirty shot that could have caused a serious injury and B) getting whupped as a result. Neither helps your team.

A Couple Things from Last Night

Every time they showed Turco on the bench he looked like he was having a blast. I’m thinking this guy REALLY likes being on the Hawks. And I’m guessing the locker room will love him (in a non-sexual way…)

The nifty passing play that led to Tazer’s goal was pretty cool. But for a good chunk of the game I thought the Hawks looked like a lot of guys who hadn’t played together much.

It seemed as if Keith and Tazer looked like a Norris Trophy winner and the MVP of the Stanley Cup playoffs in how they played—that is, they just seemed totally relaxed and confident out there. Can’t wait to see the rest of the “veterans” play. Is it October yet?

I really liked turco. Yeah, the post was there, but the only goal he let in really was a miscommunication between him and a teammate. Once the team and him get the positioning and passing sorted out, its gonna be all sexy-times with the stickhandling.

Hannu will be renewing his lease in rockford, for sure – when does crawford play?

Markarov and Morin are full of win.

Stalberg looks so fast even he doesn’t know what to do with it.

.. it all made me want the entire roster together in a real game. As my fiance said “who the fuck is gilbert?”

by oregon_hawk on Sep 23, 2010 12:01 PM CDT reply actions

Stalberg

How was he in the 3rd? I didn’t notice him much in the 1st 2 periods but maybe as stated the puck just wasn’t finding him. I’m still excited to see him play with some of the starters and wonder if Panda can work with him. Since he slows the game down and you can’t fuck w/ that. I can sense a little “shake and bake”

by Jrs23 on Sep 23, 2010 12:11 PM CDT up reply actions

Fast but....

Stalberg and Skille are pretty interchangeable I think aside from Skille actually being able to lay someone out. It’s only one game but not overly impressed. Either should be able to eat minutes though. Bickell better than them both.

Morin looks like he belongs on the ice, yes like someone mentioned earlier very “27ish” moments which was good to see. Makarov looked decent enough and had some moments as well.

Boynton is striking me as somewhat of a goon but on a team of what seems like nice dudes there has to be room for a total prick who cares nothing about the well being of the other team. Sweet leg sweep for a pre-season game btw.

Tazer, Sharp and Duncs still awesome at hockey not surprising.

by TurdFurgeson on Sep 23, 2010 1:11 PM CDT up reply actions

You think Bickell is better

at his job than both of them or better at hockey in general than both of them?

I dont’ see Boynton as a goon at all. Somewhat of a questionable hit and fight, but he’s a #5-7 Dman. He does it every game, we have something to worry about. But for right now, who knows what Jones said or did that set him off. It’s the first preseason game, let’s see how they do.

by Katherine215 on Sep 23, 2010 1:20 PM CDT up reply actions

Agreed about the goon-age

You cannot measure goonery when someone else starts the fight.

by stanfordron on Sep 23, 2010 2:10 PM CDT up reply actions

Word skippage

I meant to put “Bickell looked better”. I would assume all 3 make the team to start unless someone else goes on a massive tear.

Boynton is, well I guess its what you define as goon. I’m pretty loose with the term. Kind of like “dude”. I would define Rat as a goon, and hes one of my favorite players. Burish Id throw into that category. Alex Song, Mark Van Bommel for anyone who follows soccer, I refer to as goons even though they’re really not.

They just beat ass. Maybe not start the fight but defiantly finish it. Which is Bonytons job as far as I can tell I just don’t have a good word to describe it yet.

Why I'm happy with what I saw

First, Cullimore, I can’t believe he was that bad. On D, he was skating around like he was looking for change on the ice. Pisani is going to be a fantastic addition to the hawks if he stays healthy. He played with great awareness and a lot of creativity. I knew Stalberg was fast, but WOW, serious wheels. When he gets in the right place at the right time, that’s going to be impressive. Markov really got my attention early on, and I really looked forward to him getting the puck through the game.

Marty Turco looks like a THREAT on the ice, and did anyone else notice Dunk skating with some serious swagger? His play has elevated to “Fuck off, I’m Dunkin Keith and you’re not.”

Looking at all this offensive talent, and with some of our stars not on the ice last night, this should be an amazing season. I know Q’s line up roulette wheel has lots of options with what we saw.

“How long will it take before Beach gets into his first scrap?”

Depends on who pisses him off more initially – one of his own teammates or one of the opposing players. Could be a toss – up.

I thought Boynton’s hit was classless, no way was he going for a hip check and then inadverdently got his legs tied up. He swung that thing around deliberately – I hate that kind of play, since the Hawks get that kind of crap a lot from players who can’t skate with them.

Well it comes as no suprise that the NHL Head Office wasn’t at all amused (and why should they be) by Nick Boynton’s throat-slash gesture at Blair Jones last night and has suspended him for the first game of the regular season against Colorado according to TSN.
