"Random Hip-Hop Quote" - Hawks Season Preview Continued...
Happy Friday to all. Our season preview rolls along, with some thoughts on tonight's game as well. A bit of a different take today, this one from Chevrier30:
Which of our dearly departed players from last year’s team will have the best year in their new home?
It is kind of sad that there will be so many candidates for this title. Anyway, I'm scratching Byfuglien off of it now. With his switch to defense, even in the Southeast he will have Gagne-St. Louis, Staal, and some Russian dude in DC bearing down on him. Either that, or with Atlanta's underrated defensive corps, Buff might only be a third pairing guy. He's certainly behind Enstrom, Oduya, Bogosian, and possibly even Hainsey. Secondly, the Thrash are counting on a second year goalie in Pavalec, and that doesn't always work out. Ask Columbus. So he's out.
Andrew Ladd is a candidate, because he might be getting Top-6 minutes this year. He's skating with Nik Antropov who was Atlanta's #1 center last year and had quite a year. He's also seen time with Evander Kane, who's going to improve from his rookie year (though how anyone "improves" from KTFO of Matt Cooke, I'm not really sure). Still, it's Atlanta's Top 6, so it's hard to put your money here.
Then there's Niemi in San Jose. There's no question he's going to rack up wins, that's that thing that the Sharks do. And given his slightly advanced age from a normal rookie, and his willingness to adjust his game, I don't see much of a sophomore slide, if one at all. And he'll have another goalie pushing him, which he most certainly didn't have from about February on here. Niittymaki will have a month long stretch where he's lights out, so we'll see how Antti handles that. Steady for sure.
Which brings us to one of our favorites, and someone we may keep writing about even though he's not in town just because the material is so plentiful, Kris Versteeg. I know some have questioned Steeg's linemates in Ontario that should keep his numbers down, but remember for most of the year Steeger was playing with either John Madden, center himself, or a ghost of Dave Bolland that he was in the regular season. He didn't get much help from his pivot. Plus, Kris's game is all about creating for himself anyway. And he still threw up 20 goals. Now he'll be on the #1 power play unit and almost certainly released from all his defensive duties in what is a far more open conference. Sure the media glare is intense, but Steeger hasn't ever exactly shied away from the camera, has he? It'll hurt to watch, and I fully expect him and Kessel to get in a fistfight at center ice over who's hogging the puck more, but this is my pick.

Great post
I’d go with Steeger too. If things do go south with Kessel, Versteeg! could always bust out a Verbeauty of a rap on him.

On a related note, I just met the Governor of New Jersey while walking to lunch on LaSalle Street. The dude was just standing there totally unnoticed. It was pretty cool. Apparently he was on Oprah today.

Well
I have to assume the number of people in Chicago who would recognize the Governor or NY on La Salle St is fairly low. So kudos on being in the elite group!

Pretty remarkable how much his new teammates respect Versteeg for having won the Cup. I figured they would respect him as being a good player, but because of the Cup it seems like they look at him as having an added aura about him. Almost like he is magic.

O'Donnell, or
any Tea Party candidate for that matter, should not be allowed to run. If you don’t have a college education, you shouldn’t be allowed nears polls in the first place. To vote on the law, you must first understand it and the implications of having or not having them. The Tea Party is severely lacking in that department because of how blinded they are by their rage.

For what it's worth,
there really aren’t that many members in the current Congress with Law degrees, Out of the 535 members, 226 have law degrees (38.8% in the House of Rep & 57% of the Senate)
Maybe, just once, someone will call me 'Sir' without adding, 'You're making a scene."
I forgot to add
that it’s a total of 42%. I also think a law degree isn’t as necessary for a member of the House than it is for a Senator.
Maybe, just once, someone will call me 'Sir' without adding, 'You're making a scene."
I need Coffee
The Education stats for the above link begin on page 3. Also something like 95% of the members have some sort of college degree, but not all of which would make them knowledgeable regarding law.
Maybe, just once, someone will call me 'Sir' without adding, 'You're making a scene."

Members of Congress should be drawn from the common American, who lives with the Policies of Government
No, measurement of Qualifications [other than those already outlined] should ever preclude or exclude one from running. Let the people decide who is worthy to hold office, not a select few to judge if one is “worthy” or any other “needed source”. Let the voters decide who best serves their values and interest, not those “who think” they know betterthan the people themselves.

we don't agree on much politically, TMFF
but I do agree with you here. I’ve known plenty of dumb-ass people who somehow managed to earn college degrees, and several highly intelligent people who (for one legitimate reason or another) never finished college or got anything above an associates (or less). So what? I agree with Coz that to vote on the law, you must first understand its implications, but the degrees a person has doesn’t guarantee this. Representing other in Congress or any state legislative body should never come with qualifications like minimum education requirements — to do so would be the definition of elitist, especially when considering the price tag that comes with higher education these days.

The Difference being
One being what the overall framework of the system as a whole is, and all must work within. The politics is your desires for personal or political power, these may be more stringent than the framework itself, and some of the desires may be outside of the frame work.
An example would be, can a Convicted Felon run for Office. My philosophy being that all can run, who meet the requirements says yes, he can run for office. My Politics on the other hand would tell him to get fucked, I am not voting for you.
Really one is what IS to be or not be [The setting and operation within the Rule of Written Law, the framework of governance and society], the other is the Desire, the conduct of people or society to be or not be [personal wants for personal gain or power].
I personally may not like something, but that does not mean I wish it to be illegal. The desire to impose that is over the limit of the Philosophy. Example: I do not like Pot, would never, and have never touched it, I have seen what it has done to family members, but to my Philosophy on Governance and Liberty, I can not justify making it illegal. However, I would fully support severe consequences for abuse or misuse which injures and disparages another from its use.
This is actually tougher to explain than I thought it would be.

haha....well i'm sure it'll come up again at some point
I’m actually all about exchange of ideas an discussion on politics, it’s just the opinion editorials that I think can get harsh. One thing i hated about living in the Northeast was the ‘I can’t talk to you if we don’t have the same politics’ attitude — I think that’s just the midwesterner in me. But i’ll agree on the “I personally may not like something, but that does not mean I wish it to be illegal” That’s a huge part of the issues i have with politics on the political right.
At the end of the day, I still prescribe to the “it takes a village” philosophy, it’s a huge part of the culture I was raised in. It’s an odd mix considering everything I’ve made personal life decisions on was in a very “by your bootstraps” kind of way, and do tend to resent people i know great jobs based on who their family knew. that happened a lot in the post-911 job hiring slump when i left college, and made me incredibly bitter about the job searching process.

i think
political exchanges here can be healthy.
the decline of mass media, while not a bad thing, means people are more likely to be exposed to beliefs of like-minded people, which creates unhealthy silos of groupthink.
this blog pushes together people with a common interest, but of diverse opinions. since we’re not here for politics per se, it doesn’t need to get heavy or tedious, but it’s a healthy reminder to everyone that others hold different, valid beliefs, but they’re still human and good Hawk fans.

His writings in the Spirit of Laws, are laid out it more detail, and context, and I think are much easier to translate into our Founding much easier than Locke, though Locke certainly laid the foundation for Montesquieu to build on half a century later.

I know plenty of degreed people who have absolutely no common fucking sense whatsoever. And I know non-degreed people who have all the common sense in the world.
Other than a clear-cut violator of the law, anyone should be allowed to run as long as they’re a true representative of the people they’re supposed to actually represent. But there are too damned many elitists out there fucking telling us what we need.
By virtue of what you said in your last statement I can tell where you get your news. And your last word is indicative of the ideology you most likely represent. The people spoke in Delaware’s primary. If she wins the general election, great. If not, they so be it. Just like the incumbent in AK that lost the primary. The people spoke. You lost, get over it. The sense of entitlement of some folks on both sides of the aisle truly amazes me to no end.
I do NOT need the Gov’t to handle my finances. I do NOT need the Gov’t to get me a house. I do NOT need the Gov’t to provide my health care and I sure as HELL do NOT need the Gov’t to hand out any shit to me. Until Washington gets this, there will be the continued backlash by the people. And the government gave us each a first time buyer’s credit which is getting us new kitchens. But I’m a kitchen slut, I have no problem taking help to get pretty cabinets and shiny new appliances.

It's a difference in belief
I saved for quite some time and managed as best as I could.
It sometimes can be a fine line. Credits can be OK in moderation. The problem I had with the Gov’t is using this line of thought it was peoples’ “right” to own a home. Frank said it time and time again. He also in 2007 said F&F was just fine; that was right before the housing crisis.
There’s just too many in the Gov’t today who think there are all these “rights” that are just so wrong. We do not have the “right” to a home, or a car, or a plasma TV etc. We have the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
Just win the next game...!
by blackhawk24 on Sep 28, 2010 12:39 PM CDT up reply actions
the problem I have with your line of thinking
is that it’s all about you and what you want/need/believe. You live in a community; it’s NEVER all about your needs and what you want to do.
Once upon a time, someone else who was better off than my family paid a little more in taxes so that I could take student loans and grants (because I had a single mother working two jobs, one of which was as a member of your dreaded teacher’s union) and get a college education. In turn, I’m better off than my parents were, and I will one day reach the point where I have to pay just a little more in taxes so I can turn around and help pull someone else up.
You don’t like paying for Amtrak? Or the USPS? Ok, let’s get rid of them. Now, tell me, what are we using instead of trains, and how am I getting my magazines? And who is now employing the thousands of people you’ve just abruptly laid off by shutting down Amtrak or USPS?
You want to blame teachers for our poor test scores? Sure, they’re definitely part of the blame as we have some really bad teachers out there. You know why? It’s not just unions; the pay is terrible and no one with an education wants to teach and make no money.
We also have a lot of shitty parents who don’t make sure their kids go to school everyday, do their homework every night, and be accountable. Instead, they either don’t care, or believe their child can do no wrong and/or doesn’t need to know what they’re supposed to be learning.
As for FHA loans and tax credits, frankly, I’m glad that my tax dollars go toward something like that. Investing in property that you can afford is good for personal finances and the economy. I turned around and dumped my entire credit plus some back into the economy. I’d say it served its purpose of helping stimulate just a little bit. At least the Home Depot employees and my electrician and plumber think so.
I can’t recall seeing the government encourage a plasma tv as a “right.” That’s more people seeing a want and not being able to say no to themselves. You want to blame the government, fine; i’d rather people looked in the mirror and determined maybe they aren’t so entitled to everything after all. I’d like some more personal accountability, thank you.
To me, it is incredibly easy to criticize what you don’t like or claim not to need, but I don’t ever see a lot of solutions to these same complaints.
by Katherine215 on Sep 28, 2010 1:10 PM CDT up reply actions
How's 2 of 3
Flood for me and tornado for my in-laws (they live in OK). Not once did we have to go to the Gov’t.
But where we perhaps may differ is that I don’t want the Gov’t doing it. Sure, put forth [reasonable] regulations but don’t run it.
I’ve been a GM owner for over 3 decades. But with what’s happened the past year+, no way would I buy a GM vehicle now, after the sneak shots the Gov’t pulled.
Funny you mention a train. Did you know that Amtrak, America’s choo-choo has been in business for 4 decades and has yet to turn a profit? Who do you think is footing the bill?
How ‘bout the good ’ol mail. The US Post Office stands to lose about $8B this year, after $7B in 2009. Funny but I can’t seem to find the financials of FedEx or UPS doing nearly as bad.
On education: Vouchers. I guess I can’t figure out how so many school districts spend so much money per student yet test scores do not reflect the spending. Why? Unions. Teachers are great. Unions? Not so much.
Simply put, I don’t want a nanny state. Watch this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RU3t2c92UK8 It’s a prelude to a warning for America. Guess what? England has pulled back on its budgetary spending. They’re making progress, significantly.
The bottom line is you cannot spend your way out of financial problems. Debt will skyrocket.
Just win the next game...!

I have relatives who work for the Postal Service
They get paid about the same as the UPS and Fed Ex drivers, but they hit EVERY house Every day. Change that and you change the USPS finances. It is also cheaper to mail a letter by mail by a large factor. If the USPS was allowed to charge what UPS and Fed Ex do, there would not be a loss every year. The cost of stamps is ridiculously low, raise it to at least a fraction of the cost of a seat at a Hawks game, (see what I did there? Now it’s a Hockey related comment. lol), and watch it pay for itself…

I’m sure the Blackhawks would have loved to go to Washington. But a certain asshole President never extended the invite.
The Bulls would have been there the next day.
19-88-81-2-7-10-36-4-51 : The Hawks
Don't they usually go during the following season while they are on a road trip to D.C.?
I think we will have to wait to see what happens.
The Penguins made their visit September 2, 2009. I have yet to hear anything on this. I posed the question on a different thread but got no response.
19-88-81-2-7-10-36-4-51 : The Hawks
If they visited when in Washington they would wait until March. This obviously isn’t going to happen. Plus the team is missing like 9 players. Im assuming this is going to happen. Which is a major fucking bummer.
19-88-81-2-7-10-36-4-51 : The Hawks
you don't like the President
but you want the team to meet him.
what am I missing here?

The President is still the President

I always wanted to see the Blackhawks at the White House regardless. It has nothing to do with the actual President.
I always saw the Wings teams there and wanted it to be us. I dont care if its Clinton-Bush or Obama. There is absolutely no contradiction there. I want the country to get another reminder that were the Champs. Nothing more.
19-88-81-2-7-10-36-4-51 : The Hawks
Ok, I get that
it was just odd that you were cursing him one minute then mad the team wasn’t going.

According to this article
the President looked forward to welcoming the team at the White House.
Obama Quenneville Call
Maybe, just once, someone will call me 'Sir' without adding, 'You're making a scene."
OK, yeah, I just watched the clips
The first clip with him (2nd on the page) was pretty funny, but it was essentially pointless; the second clip showed why he went on, & it was to make his case and bring attention to the problem. But I agree with you that I could’ve done without the jokey part at the start.

Go to the MAPLE LEAFS site (Pension Puppetts I think it is)— they love our boy
I can not wait till he goes on the 10 game West Coast and shows the LEAFS how to party in the limo in Canuckland………………..
I said Ladd and Versteeg
I am still not sure which will have the better season, but I’m fairly confident both will have good seasons. Both should be Top 6 on their respective teams, and both contribute well in their own way (Though I think Versteeg’s Country Stupid side will show up at a much higher rate).
Buff on D, I do not think that will last. He will go back and be a 2nd – 3rd Line Forward (knowing Notlanta probably Center) by New Years.

Now that's a porn reference... or a cluster...
My Father's name is Jack, and my Mother's name is Daniels...
Ladd will likely be the better all around player ... but Versteeg will get all the attention
Ladd is solid two way help the team reliably win night in and night out.
Versteeg is really flashy.
Versteeg wins the attention wars – while Ladd is the guy more coaches would pick to have on their team
Confusion will be my epitaph.
im not sure what youre saying here
that crosby is more flashy and toews is the better all around player? because thats not even remotely true
because off all the pretty goals?
Just look at the past Olympics. Toews was selected to the All-Tourney team, even selected as Best Forward.
What did Crosby get? Nothing, except his picture all over everywhere because he scored the last goal.

mostly
I do think Toews has better leadership qualities and a greater drive to constantly improve himself, so I would prefer him of Crosby if I was a coach

It's on NHL network.
I think that Scum’s site is also streaming it live.

It's on CSN tonight, WGN tomorrow night.
You can find it streaming. Channelsurfing and atdhe both have it.
Someone we haven't talked about much but is worth watching
Brian Connelly played with Keith in the last preseason game. With Keith out tonight (per Kuc), Connelly may get some ice time where he’s expected to carry a man’s load. He was rookie of the year in the AHL a while back, so I’m intrigued about what people think of him out there on big league ice.

He was Rockford’s rookie of the year last year, not the AHL’s rookie of the year.

I'm curious to see how Connelly does too
but
he’s expected to carry a man’s load
is this some kind of hazing ritual the rookies go through?
‽ ⅋ ‽
He looked "steady' againest Tampa
actually he might the “sleeper” of the camp

d'awww, Steeger
I’m glad they’re loving him over there in Toronto. Was following a mostly Flyers chat at last night’s preseason game between the Leafs and the Flyers, and even a couple of the people there seemed impressed by him. Tonight he’ll be playing on a line with Kessel so I’ll be interested in seeing how that turns out. Of all the dearly departed Hawks, he’s the player who I hope does really well/fits in his new team. (But if you know me, you probably knew that already. :|)

Favorite Kris Versteeg quote of all time.....
Did you hear Tazer hates dogs, children, and old people?
"Make the bastard chase you, he will follow."
OT But where the Fuck did VerStig go?
Is he completely off the grid?
I’m patiently [well yes, or no, maybe, perhaps, IDK] waiting on some of his cross-mutual interference-goal time off the ice, double helix triad, to the square of infinity / 0 stats.
Oh, and I know he is a NYC guy that would be great to get to MSG on Nov 1.

Versteeg!!!
Too much effort from Versteeg-Ladd would disappear during the season—unless he was playin Canucks—Versteeg gave 100% -110% of the time
