Kovalchuk/CBA Decision Looming

It appears that this goatfuck is finally reaching a conclusion, albeit a not entirely expected one.

Numerous outlets are reporting that an agreement regarding long term deals has finally been reached, and Ilya Kovalchuk's 15 year, $100 mildo deal has been approved/grandfathered into the new stipulations. These stipulations apparently include that the last five years of a deal need to average at least $1 million, and reduced salary past the age of 40 can't be used to soften the cap hit. Marian Hossa's deal will be grandfathered in also, as his contract presently does not meet these conditions, albeit only by one year, the last year of his deal, when he will be 41 at the start of the 2020-2021 season at a rate of $750K. His last five years, though, do indeed average out to $1.5 million.

While it's not entirely equitable, all of the other teams prior to this point had an opportunity to sign players to similar deals, and those parameters can still be worked within to create cap-friendly long-term contracts (Hello, Brent Seabrook). This also allegedly means the players have to pay less into escrow, but all of the specifics of that could probably be explained by someone far more well-versed in the CBA than I am. This is probably about the best the NHL and PA could do with this given the situation of the existing contracts it already approved, because all hell would have broken loose had they not grandfathered these contracts in.

Well at least Hossa is safe, but

i know it will be harder to sign Seabrook now. Especially with the CBA ending in 2012. Since the CBA ends then, do you think thats why the NHLPA gave in?

This is over. You can go ahead and order the autopsy now.

they couldn’t just throw members of the union to the wolves so they did what they had to. i’m also sure that they’ll remember this day when the CBA ends, especially with Fehr running things. his way of running negotiations is the definition of playing hard ball.

Is it just me or is that photo a bit of an optical illusion?

The way the light hits hossa’s arm is different than the way it hits the rest of him. One time I look at it and it looks like it’s his arm and the next time I look at it, it almost looks like there is someone standing next to him that is holding up a phone. Weird.

They were stupid, weren't they?

I think that might have been one of the top things listed on the NHL’s Pro/Con list going in.

Even the sniff of that was probably a scary prop for the Gary meister and his band of brothers.

Speaking of which, is it too “tinfoil hat” to think that this was exactly what they wanted going in, and that it is not too far beyond the pale to think Gary and Lou chatted up this very thing over one of their many intimate dinners?

Ugggh. I felt dirty typing that last bit…

by Coz_Bulls_Fan on Sep 3, 2010 11:57 PM CDT up reply actions

I don't think it's so "tinfoil hat", no.

There’s been quite a bit of speculation that Lou didn’t like the cap-circumventing deals, and may have made the initial Kovalchuk contract so far out, the league would have to take action.

And as it turns out, he gets his man with the last of the ‘loophole’ lifetime contracts, and the league gets a temporary agreement to stop it from happening again.

Until the next CBA negotiation.

With Donald Fehr, representing.

In conclusion, we’re all boned.

by The Deputy Mayor of Rush Street on Sep 3, 2010 9:42 PM CDT up reply actions

Naaah. We’ll be OK.

Really. I think of Fehr as exactly as he is, I think. A very good hired gun. He has the rep AND the ego to step into the ring with one of the biggest egos in our game.

Plus, is it not the NBA and NFL that are both looking at work stoppages? The NHL knows they will/would have a huge opportunity if there is either one of those leagies on the shelf.

The PA won’t get pushed around with Fehr, but I found those articles when it first came out where they spelt his name Fear as stupid and condescending to you and I.

Why? The players in the NHL, maybe more, or at least as much as, the players in the other leagues are cognizant of the success and failure of their league. TV deals help the NFL, and NBA, make gazillions and pay out same. They want the same. They know another work stoppage so close to the last will kill any momentum.

The NHL and NBC made money last year, and I am sure it helps. But a national platform will bring in the big bucks to the betterment of all teams, both big market and small.

I am looking for the Versus/NBC conglom being another sports network as a possible and viable alternative to ESPN. They could go as national, could they not? ( Canadian here….but NBC is a basic cable option with all their various badges…right?)

Or is ESPN a better fit? Either way, the NHL and PA knows there are more piles of cash. They were the league that posted gains throughout the recession hitting right? This is the time for the NHL to finally make some traction in the Lower 50 States ( ;-)

The players are not going to eff that up over a clause that only really affected a very small percentage of the members. That seems to have been fixed pretty fairly.

You can still sign…say…Doughty to a 12 year deal and still be below 35!! Or, say a Stamkos…

well......

not being harsh or judgmental but you obviously never experienced the MLB version of Ferh. i only say this with respect to Vancouver not having an allegiance to a baseball team, unless you consider Seatle as your own. Ferh destroyed the innocence of the MLB the moment he forced them to cancel the WS. i consider him the anti-Christ of sports. and seeing him involved with the NHLPA makes me sick to my stomach. that man has balls as big as the largest rubber band ball, except they are made from solid brass. that man will not give an inch in negotiations. his tactics are the definition of playing hard ball.

just wait and see. i’m not trying to be negative. i’m just giving you fair warning of what is to come. what happens with the NBA and NFL does not matter to Fehr. he only cares about who he works for, and getting them the money he thinks they deserve. and trust me, he will get it, just as he did in the work stoppage of 94-95.

by Coz_Bulls_Fan on Sep 4, 2010 12:13 AM CDT up reply actions

Dude. Not for nothing but I was a big Expo fan in ‘94. When it looked like we might have an all Canadian WS and the best team of it’s generation forming in Montreal.

The work stoppage forever fucked that up in the eyes of my Quebecois brethren. So, yeah, I get what you are saying.

It doesn’t really apply to hockey though. Baseball doesn’t have a Cap of any kind. Regardless of whatever innocence you or I attach to the game then and/or now, the truth is there is not much fairness in that innocence. The Yankees and Red Sox can spend 200 mil and the Pirates field a team for what the Yanks pay one player. Baseball sold out…Fehr was just around at the time, helping steer them over the cliff.

He’s in a Cap world now. With a players rep system that makes for some pretty strong personalities being in control. I see him more as a kindler, gentler Rambo. Less the cold stone killer in First Blood…more the still effective but gentler “warrior with a cause”.

At least I sure the hell hope so.

I'm in 'fehr' as well on the upcoming negotiations

I’m with Coz on this one. Your two negotiation heads (Bettman and assuming Fehr is the NHLPA agent) have danced this dance before and have shown their willingness to temporarily destroy a sport. IMO both of these guys have huge egos and when egos come into play during negotiations, the negotiations can become more about supposed principle than $$.

My only hope is that Fehr is a wiser man after the MLB strike and has pondered different tactics that he and the union committee could have used to avoid the strike. I have no hope in Bettman.

Versus/ NBC will never be national

Primarily because NBC is a solid 3rd – place network in a severely declining market share for network television in general, and Versus is a 3rd – tier (i.e additional fee on top of the ones you pay for ESPN and other cable networks) cable option on most US cable systems (most importantly, they’re 3rd – tier on Comcast, the largest cable operator in the country). The NHL may not have been happy with ESPN’s coverage back then, but they severely screwed the pooch on jumping to such a joke of a “sports network.” You either dance with The Borg or die from it, and Versus has no effective 2nd and 3rd channels in which to view other NHL playoff games, like ESPN does with their multiple channel options. Until they get off of Versus and back to something remotely resembling a national cable outlet, the NHL will never reach anything approaching national coverage here.

so I can’t comment on Hawk. Ron though, well, everyone has summed it up already. He’s a nice guy, I feel he should be in the HOF, but he’s a terrible color guy. He doesn’t add anything to the broadcast of the game. This thread seems like deja vu.

With Ronnie there must be an assumption

one must take serious before ever listening:

He’s not a color guy, he’s just a cheerleader. Don’t get me wrong, I love Ronnie. He’s there simply because he has got to be the #1 former player that truly bleeds for his team as a broadcaster.

Harrelson on the other hand simply sucks. When I compare the TV PbP guys on each side of town I realize just how lucky the Cubs are to have Len. Sox broadcasting took a HUGE hit when Rooney left after 2005. But how lucky was he to call the Sox WS in ’05 only to follow it up with the Red Birds WS in ’06…

Just win the next game...!

Santo’s bad, but yeah, that cornpone – schtick loser is epic – level bad. Mel Allen used to be one of the worst homer announcers – Hawk blows him away. Never heard an announcer question every single umpire call that goes against his team, not to mention holding grudges for entire seasons based on…a ball or a strike call? Complete embarrassment.

I think the Kovy decision broke SBN; I keep getting 503s

PD article currently has ages over 41 instead of 40 exempt from being used to soften cap hits. If that’s the case, it looks to me like they may have used the Hossa contract as the line in the sand: this far but no further.

by spokeinthebandwagon on Sep 3, 2010 5:13 PM CDT reply actions

From the beginning

I thought it was possible that a player might play out a contract like Hossa’s through its end. That could be why they drew the line there. Meanwhile, nobody would sign that Kovy contract with an expectation of playing all the way through it.

Reminded me of a clip someone posted before the SCF of a Flyers-Sentators game where so many people got tossed that each bench only had 2-3 players left on it (including Sharp for the Flyers, who took a face-off — kind of. He really just got there, dropped the gloves, and got tossed).

1982 playoffs, Hawks down 7-1 to the Stars at the old barn. The Hawks are just headhunting in the 3rd period (it was often not a good idea to get a huge lead back then, especially in the Norris). Multiple fights break out in the crowd. After the first minutes or so of the clip, all you see are Andy Frain ushers and Chicago cops beating the shit out of the “perpetrators” i.e., the Stars fans. Apparently the cops and ushers weren’t taking the loss to the Stars very well and needed a release.
