Enough Already - More Pre-Season Goings On

Hannu TOIVONEN! LADY! With the shooting and the saving and the scoring...

So, Brandon Pirri has been recalled and goalie Alec Richards has been sent to Rockford. During his brief stint this pre-season, Pirri did little to warrant a serious look, even with the nicely set-up goal he scored late against Scum in the second pre-season tilt last week. Given Pirri's billing as a playmaker, and with the Hawks being all but set at the top three center positions with Toews, Sharp, and Bolland, it seems highly unlikely that Pirri would be vying for the 4th center spot. So what gives?

It's this author's (likely skewed and wrong) opinion, that Pirri was recalled due to the flux at the last remaining winger positions being sought after by Igor Makarov, Viktor Stalberg, Jeremy Morin, and Kyle Beach. With only three practice games left, Coach Q and his staff likely don't want to risk a dumbfuck injury to any of their top three centermen in a meaningless game, but they also need to see more of the above four wingers to make their final determination on who gets to break camp with the grown ups. Some of us saw and most of us heard what a pooch-screwing Ben Smith centering Patrick Kane was, with Kane effectively trying to play center and wing at the same time. Enter Pirri, who is a natural center, and will give the coaches a reasonable look at what the bubble wingers can do without needlessly risking anything happening to Toews, Sharp, or Bolland.

Either way, we'll have to wait until tomorrow when the game wraps start filtering in from those in attendance, as this game will not be televised on either CSN or WGN, and I've yet to find an NHL Network replay being aired in the next day or two. St. Louis' website claims it will be webcast live, but only to residents in the St. Louis area, which leaves everyone except Mike Martin shit outta luck.

Mercifully, we only have 7 days until hockey season begins for real. We're going to have a announcements in the upcoming days as Opening Night in Colorado draws, including *TEASE* some road watch details, and an addition around these parts, so stay tuned.

he does have a ring and more nhl experience than toblerone or however you pronounce it…but this marty has been getting bounced mid-season most of his career…i vote save the scratch for any forward problems that might pop up.

He'll probably never be a starter again

But his cost for his experience = awesome value.

Don’t forget that Toivonen is a sprained ankle, a cold, a sore back away from being called up. This means he’s our no.2 guy at any moment, and I don’t have much faith in him to take over goaltending duties at the NHL. Even back-up duties.

by Legendary on Sep 30, 2010 4:03 PM CDT reply actions

well, there's why Pirri's been recalled

according to Sassone the only regulars in tonight’s lineup are Kopecky and Brouwer and possibly Hjalmarsson:

Hawks coach Joel Quenneville wasn’t kidding when he said he wanted to use tonight’s game in St. Louis against the Blues as a chance – maybe a last chance — to evaluate those players still on the bubble.

[…]

The other 10 forwards are bubble players: Kyle Beach, Ryan Potulny, Jack Skille, Viktor Stalberg, Igor Makarov, Jeremy Morin, Jake Dowell, Bryan Bickell, Ben Smith and Brandon Pirri.

[…]

The Hawks brought seven defensemen to St. Louis: Niklas Hjalmarsson, Jassen Cullimore, Jordan Hendry, Nick Boynton, John Scott, Nick Leddy and Brian Connelly.

Marty Turco will play the full game in goal.

Quenneville said he planned to use the last two exhibition games, Friday against Pittsburgh and Sunday with St. Louis, both at the United Center, as dress rehearsals for the regular season with mostly veteran lineups.

That was my point the other day.

Q is putting him on the ice with a team full of unproven players. I don’t think Turco’s psyche is as fragile as Huet’s but do we really need him out there for a full game with the bubble boys?

Not only see what’s what with the bubble guys, but keep the regs off the ice for the goons in STL that would love to headhunt in a preseason game.

Maybe that’s harsh, but it would totally suck losing one of our best guys to an injury during a preseason game.

Watch Stalberg.

I want to see if he is going to make this team on merit vs potential. Leaf friends offered warnings on his lack of presence. And they have been right in the first two-three weeks of camp. He has everything, but hasn’t shown it thus far. If Skille, Pisani, and Bickell are full timers, then Markarov, Putulny, Beach, Stalberg, and Dowell are fighting for two spots. If you don’t think the top three are full-timers, then the whole thing is up for grabs over the next three games.

Personally, I have been impressed by Markarov (and Morin, but I think he gets a year at Rockford) the most.

I have studied this quite a bit

In our country a finding of guilt is direct correlatable (is that a word?) to the quality of one’s attorney. Actual guilt has very little relevance.

by stanfordron on Sep 30, 2010 6:43 PM CDT up reply actions

I know it is not perfect,

The error should ALWAYS side with the accused, (though the sympathy always for the Victims). But I still feel fairly confident a far vast majority of those found guilty are, as long as the system is designed and executed to make all viable attempts to protect the truly innocent. I know some wrong convictions have occurred, but it is not perfect, just the best we can do.

This isn’t accusatory in tone, but the USA perplexes me at times. It’s such an intensely Christian nation, but then there’s the death penalty. I mean, it’s a commandment. I’m not a religious person myself (I’m still against the death penalty in all situations), but the contradiction never ceases to amaze me in the context of something so serious.

The Commandment say Murder (if you translate it straight from the Hebrew writing)

This is not that. If I felt “killing” was against the Commandments, I would not be in the US Navy today.

I had a tough time with this sometime back, and went and learned what the commandment said, by translating its Hebrew to English.

"Straight" being as clear as I could get it

I had to be 100% it did not say kill. If I was not I would not do what I do. I do not speak Hebrew, and had to use the aid of translation books, but walked away completely sure it said Murder, not Kill. Their is a huge difference between the two.

I did not mean wishes and dreams by you

But I do speak some Hebrew and have looked into the subject and that translation tidbit was probably more the perspective of the person who wrote your translation than anything real.

by stanfordron on Sep 30, 2010 8:11 PM CDT up reply actions

It was computer programs

did both words in various context both ways, and murder was consistent to the meaning, in addition to the few I knew who spoke Hebrew [very few], whom concurred with the translation.

I’m not going to argue with you here, TMFF, I respect your opinion and the resulting decision. For me, netiher the death penalty nor murder/killing is a right and wrong issue; but I personally don’t believe there’s a substantive difference. Intent to kill, for me, is synonymous with murder. But it’s a divisive argument; I really do respect others’ opinions, I just strongly disagree.

He’d keep coming back to where we sat whenever he remembered something new. no, Bengie got traded to the Rangers

so Buster Mother Fucking Posey could finally get some playing time. and he’s been AMAZING. He has as many HR as Jason Heyward, in 120? few plate appearances. and has been an awesome catcher and he can hit the ball and moves faster than Molina and basically he’s the best thing to happen to the Giants since Tim Lincecum.

and today he hit a two run home run that totally locked up the game for us and the cubs beat the padres so we’re guaranteed not to have a worse record than them at the end of 162 games and I’M REALLY REALLY EXCITED.

Dont blame attendance on anything except the fact that, noone has any money in florida, and the stadium is a BITCH to get to. It takes almost an hour from tampa to get across the bridge if there is any traffic at all.

by Dranearian on Sep 30, 2010 8:49 PM CDT up reply actions

Never knew that. That could really damper the attendance severely.

Just suprising to see a small crowd for a game that they could clinch a playoff berth.

ITs really an absolute hassle to get to the stadium from Tampa. Its awful… And the fact that the majority of florida residents are not exactly well off atm hurts too. Lot of unemployment down here.

Because of the idiots of the past everyone is skeptical of Jose Bautista, but he really seems legit and the Jays are a little more active than most teams in the steriod testing after the whole Clemens fiasco.

I think it was all due to the whole team hitting around him and getting in a groove.

I will not freak out over a slow start

I predict that they will not come out of the gates like lightening. I expect them to be something like 4-6 in their first 10 games (though they MUST win the banner raising game vs SCUM). However, by January, they will start to click on all cylinders and we’ll all be resting a little easier.

by hawkeytalk on Oct 1, 2010 8:46 AM CDT up reply actions

That makes sense

Just gotta wonder about all the worrying going on if they do have a bad spell; like the post-Olympic problems.

January is a good time-frame; about the half-way marker, lot’s of learning by the kids. Lot’s of molding of linemates.

Weren’t the ’Hawks pretty crappy too in the 2009 pre-season?

Just win the next game...!

by blackhawk24 on Oct 1, 2010 10:34 AM CDT up reply actions

They had a poor PS record in '09 too

But I really couldn’t give a rats ass about the PS record. I think the team has a considerable amount of gelling to do in the first 3 months of the season.

I care that they are a top 8 team in the conference (as home ice seems to matter less to them) and that they are consistently improving as the season wears on. And no injuries!!

by hawkeytalk on Oct 1, 2010 12:09 PM CDT up reply actions

You can't put any stock

into won/loss in the pre-season. When a team is on the road, the roster usually consists of prospects and minor leaguers playing against a home team stacked with starters

by whiskeydick on Sep 30, 2010 10:02 PM CDT up reply actions

Doesn't matter much

The system has good depth. Quite a good mix of promising talents. I’ve given up on Beach. In fact, I suspect Bowman and Q have too and won’t be surprised to see him moved by the trade deadline.

on a guy who has no more than 15 AHL games under his belt?

I’ll give him until at least mid-season before I give up on this kid. I am glad he got his ass beaten in. If that plus looking like a child on the ice doesn’t refocus his attention, nothing will.

by aeroplane on Oct 1, 2010 11:56 AM CDT up reply actions

Worse. Beach actually only has about 10 AHL games under his belt

at the end of the season/playoffs the past couple of years in Rockford. He’s been playing with kids in the WHL which is a junior league.

I have been disappointed in Bick-el too

Liked his game last year, but this year he just looks slow. Maybe it will be back to 5 gear if he is with one of our top 3 centers. BTW, who do people think has the 4th line center position Potulny or Dowell?

by NiemiNation on Sep 30, 2010 10:08 PM CDT up reply actions

Agreed on Bickell

I’m guilty too of getting carried away with what Bickell might be able to offer. The more I see him the more I’m unimpressed. Again, left wing looms as a concern for this team. I believe Brouwer takes the next step this season. Kopecky is strictly serviceable. Beyond that? It’s a little bit of a clusterfuck, at least to start the season.

by whiskeydick on Sep 30, 2010 10:19 PM CDT up reply actions

Howdy

Great site. Look forward to participating. Like Morin a lot, but he needs incubator time in Rockford. The Ruskie Makorov should make this team and be a reasonable contributor. Skille? We been there, done that. But he’s adequate enough to be Bolland’s bitch on the 3rd line. What concerns me most is depth at left winger. But hey, you can’t have everything in the land of the salary cap. This team needs to stay healthy. If they can do that, then they can fight Vancouver for Western supremacy that will lead to a date with the Devils in the Finals.
