Thursday Grab Bag and Season Preview Unveiling

Lots of little things today, and maybe one big thing:

-As McClure posted here last night, the Hawks signed Ryan Potulny, who looks like a straight up Versteeg replacement.  I'm not sure why people such as Sassone are confused by this and the Pisani signing.  The Hawks lost at least two penalty killers in Versteeg and Fraser, as well as Ladd and Burish who took their turns doing so, and Pisani fills that gap.  Potulny is a shifty little player with some wheels who could benefit from being around superior talent.  Or he just got 15 goals in Edmonton because someone had to get them there.  Don't be worried about the -21, look at what was defending and goaltending in northern Alberta last season.  Secondly, this assures that Skille or Beach or Dowell or whoever aren't going to have to hurdle some obstacle to get on the roster.  Handing things to kids rarely works.  Oh, and why is Pittsburgh's signing of 13-goal Mike Comrie genius but our signing of 15-goal Polulny curious, when both are from the same team (granted Comrie played in 20 less games, but it's not like injuries are a rare occurrence for him)?

-Second item, the Hawks have promoted everyone to VP of something, and I don't know what that means other than they get to put out a press release and McDonough gets to flash that smile that basically tells you he just finished blowing himself over what a great job he's doing.

-Right then, so on to the good stuff.  Next week we'll be starting our season previews.  Last year you may remember we posed a question that we would answer about the upcoming season.  That was ok, but asking us to think of a question and an answer led to a lot of blown fuses (both emotionally and physically).  So as always, we're going to shirk some of our responsibility.  This year, you're going to ask the questions.  Use the comments section here, or if someone wants to start a fanpost thread as well, and spend the next couple days collecting questions you might have about the upcoming season.  They can be anything, as serious or as goofy as you want.  Starting Monday, at least one of us will pick one each day to post about.  Pretty simple.  Have at it.

Do you think Kane will have

any ill effects from his summer of sin and will he reach 100 points?

by Katherine215 on Sep 9, 2010 3:42 PM CDT reply actions

Yes. Yes he will.

- Toews will reach the 40-goal plateau as well.
- Turco will record 8 or more shutouts.
- Brian Campbell will have a career year offensively after Kitchen actually uses him on the PP.
- Ladd will be back @ the trade deadline after the Thrashers continue to stink for another season.
- Nothing is fucked dude we’re still the best and will terrorize the rest.

Kane may have more stick handling, but Toews is the definition of a hockey stud.

I don't think Toews could break out much more than last year.

He won everything worth winning including many $ of bonus. Let “the others” (Ovie, creepy twins, etc) collect all the reg season goodies they want. Gold Medal, Best forward of Oly tourney, playoff mvp, “Big silver trophy with lots of names”.

I love the hockey player in Toews, the “fuck you” in Kane, the wicked stick and skates of Keith, the thunder of Seabrook, The Hammer, Campbell, Sharp, Brouwer, the young guys, the new guys, and oh yeah, Marian Hossa.

Hockey is for us.

no problem

I was just curious if you thought Toews would have an offensive explosion over the next couple years while Kane sort of levels off for awhile. My thought was that Toews would always be a little lower than Kane points-wise since he does have the PK time and is just more defensively responsible, but I just wanted to hear why you thought differently.

by Katherine215 on Sep 10, 2010 12:35 PM CDT up reply actions

disagree

Kane doesn’t play on the PK, so he tends to take longer shifts 5 on 5 and PP.

His defensive improvement last year was great, but he doesn’t have near Toews’ defensive responsibility.

Do I know what rhetorical means?

by cliffkoroll on Sep 10, 2010 11:48 AM CDT up reply actions

wow

you think toews will improve by 30 pts before kane will notch an additional 12? I’d give you 3 to 1 odds on that one.

An improved powerplay alone would probably give Kane an additional 7-10 points.

I’m not so sure that Toews will ever produce a 100 point season. I hope I’m wrong, but toews does so many things well that if he were to settle into a 40-40 a year guy, I’d be pretty happy with that ceiling.

I haven't heard much recently about Kane...

But I have been paying most of my sports attention to the Sox.

Anyways I really hope he has put in a little work this summer, the guy needs to put on 20 more pounds (It took me over a year to do this)..

by 815Sox on Sep 10, 2010 1:09 PM CDT up reply actions

there's only so much you can put on that kid's 5'9" frame

Word is that he already put 10-15 pounds on last year, an additional 20 lbs would put him close to Toews weight, and he’s 4 inches shorter.

Sign me up for an additional 5-10 lbs, anything more than that probably isn’t feasible.

If you’re looking for someone to put on weight this year, look at Bolland and Hammer, those two need to put on weight like kane did last year.

I think the kids will be alright

Normally you want D-men to develop a little longer anyway, and I’m sure it will be to their benefit in the long run to spend a little longer down in the AHL. Also, they’ll get their chance on the third pairing as time passes. From there, they can be traded to some other team so that new young guys can get their chance. I think that’s how a dynasty works, but I’ve been wrong before.

by warrenjm2006 on Sep 10, 2010 9:29 AM CDT up reply actions

that whole develop while on the third pair thing

didn’t really work for Barker. Maybe that’s just Barker, but if you lock seabs up to anything over 4 years, then you really will make it tough for those young guys to have a significant role on this team. That’s not to say that seabs shouldn’t be signed, but it is an interesting question.

Screw it, go right for the DK-like deal

The way I see it, if they have to do a 27.5-for-5, that’s a $5.5M cap hit. AND it’s something that I can see an OS being come next Summer. It’ll cost a 1st, 2nd & 3rd based on this season’s OS rules. Don’t know if they can handle an add’l $2M cap hit given all the other guys situations they have to cover. So….how’s this shake out? Seab’s B-day is 4/20 so he’d finish the contract just a few days before he turns 40. Fit’s in the new rules too and the cap hit is only $1M more than now.

I disagree with signing seabs to one of these lifetime deals

Organizations need to be careful with these long term deals, and only hand them out when they are warranted. Seabs is not dunc, and I’m very hesitant to signing him to anything longer than 5 years. In an effort to lower cap hits, GM’s are making very risky moves with these long term deals. Any player can get hurt, (not a career ending injury, but a severe one) and then they could come back and be half the player they were. No one knows what the hawks situation will be in 5-6 years; maybe a young dman will have earned a big pay day, but we won’t be able to lock him up because of the long term contracts that we jumped into.

Seabs was great for us in the playoffs, he is a solid stay at home Dman, a physical presence, and he allows dunc to be the player that he is, but he has ups and downs as well. Pre-concussion, seabs had a couple of tough months and wasn’t playing top pair quality hockey. I love seabs’ game next to dunc, but 4 yrs 20 mil or 5 years 22.5 mil seems just about right.

interesting perspective

but I don’t think Nintendo is a sure thing and Soup’s horizon may be just a couple years.

Seebs is still so young, but very experienced. No question he’s way beyond where he’d be without the minutes and responsibility he’s enjoyed, and he ain’t Dunc, but I think he’s the real deal- in some ways, more valuable than Dunc already.

His progression even over the past year, his knack for clutch goals (Vancouver game 2 ginormous), the fact that he made the Canadian Olympic team. Core.

by cliffkoroll on Sep 11, 2010 2:11 PM CDT up reply actions

I certainly agree that he's part of the core

but I believe there is a misconception of “core” with all of these long term deals being thrown around. (not necessarily your misconception)

Kane and Toews are core players, but they are on 5 year deals (granted this was probably more their doing than the organization’s). Love me some low cap hits, but I really do hate these 8-13 year deals and I’m hoping that the new CBA rules will keep GM’s from handing them out. To me, core doesn’t mean 10 year deal, it can be a 5 year deal and a recognition that if that player keeps up his stellar play, then he’ll get a new deal when the time comes.

i agree

with the caution against long-term deals in general, but exceptions can be made for consummate professionals (e.g. Soriano), right?

i was reacting to the idea of keeping the decks clear for a new up-and-comer (maybe even Hammer), a legitimate concern.

but if seebs keeps performing and the D market continues to sizzle in the months ahead, the Hawks may have to do what they have to do here, and i say, if that means a long-term contract, you gotta do it, despite the risks, because there’s a good chance he’ll be a top d-man for the next dozen years.

Do I know what rhetorical means?

more valuable than Dunc?

I don’t know if I can agree with that statement. I feel like it’d be easier to find a stay-at-home, big body defenseman over someone like Keith, but I could be wrong. I don’t pay much attention to the up&comers.

And re: Olympics, I may be the only person of this opinion, but I feel like the Olympics showed that Seabs needs Duncs more than Duncs needs him. After all, it was Seabs who was benched most during the Olympics, and especially in the gold medal game. You could tell Seabrook had made the team solely because of the great chemistry between him and Duncs, and despite that being the reason, the two barely seemed to play together.

respectfully disagree, again
the gap between keith and seebs is smaller than the gap between seebs and nintendo or soup.

If you’re talking about Dman play in your own zone, I agree, but as far as 2 way Dmen go, I disagree.

Don’t get me wrong here, seabs is a better 2 way Dman than hammer, no doubt about it, but when you consider Dunc’s offensive contribution in addition to his shut down defense, the gap between Dunc and Seabs is huge. There are very few Dmen in the league who can put up 50 + points while being a shut down defenseman, and this is why I think the gap between Seabs and Hammer is smaller than the one between dunc and seabs. If this team lost Dunc, we’d be fucked. If this team lost Seabs, Hammer could step in and play with Dunc on the top pairing; the dropoff would be considerable, and the team would be worse off, but that’d be nothing compared to losing Dunc. Now, you didn’t say that losing dunc would be easier, but I’m just using this example to illustrate my point about Dunc and Seabs relative value to this team.

My last few posts make it seem like I’m not a huge Seabs fan, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. As I’ve said, I’d like to see Seabs get a nice 4 or 5 year deal.

You may like...

4 for 20 or 5 for 22.5 but the market will likely be higher than that and I’m sure Seabs’ agent will know that, even before next summer. Of course no one knows the situation in 5-6 years however in 6 years, Campbell’s $7.1M will have expired, leaving a lot open for the ‘Hawks, assuming he’s still here.

I looked at some other current deals for players with 4-6yr contracts. Seabs is better than most and about as good as others.

Player Team Pos Age #Yrs Salary Cap Hit
Phaneuf TOR D 25 6 $7,000,000 $6,500,000
Bouwmeester CGY D 26 5 $6,600,000 $6,680,000
Komisarek TOR D 28 5 $6,000,000 $4,500,000
Gilbert EDM D 27 6 $5,500,000 $4,000,000
Martin PIT D 29 5 $5,500,000 $5,000,000
Hainsey ATL D 29 5 $5,000,000 $4,500,000

Hamhuis VAN D 27 6 $5,000,000 $4,500,000
Whitney EDM D 27 6 $4,500,000 $4,000,000

It will come down to whether or not the ’Hawks feel they can afford $1M more per year cap hit with a 4-5 year deal. The RFA status certainly will help the ’Hawks though.

Lastly, the ’Hawks may just consider Seabs expendable and will take the draft picks for an OS signing. That of course depends a lot on what guys like Lalonde, Leddy & Vishnevskiy do.

Just win the next game...!

I think the RFA status is a big deal

I’ll be pretty surprised if a team throws 6 mil/yr at Seabs all while forfeiting 4 first round draft picks

I just can’t see it happening, and if it does, Seabs might be playing for a different team next year.

The only issue with Seabs is that he’s arbitration eligible. Will an arbitor award him with something north of 5-5.5 mil? I hope not.

But on the RFA-comp, it’s a 1st, 2nd & 3rd $4.64M-$6.18M, at least that’s for 2010. Don’t know how 2011 will change.

What I’d wonder is if his agent will read the market, see over 50 guys out there for 2010-11 that make more than Seabs and think: The bidding starts at $5.25M a year. Can the ’Hawks manage the cap with Seabs making about $2M more than he is right now and do it for several years? Hmmmm…..

4.64-6.18 mil

Where did you get those numbers? I assume you are correct, but do you have a source?

The 5 mil I quoted came from the CBA (which took affect in 2005-2006). I didn’t read the part of the CBA that said that the numbers go up by the same percentage that the league average salary goes up.

The 1st, 2nd, and 3rd is listed as in the 3-4 million range in the CBA. % increase from 3 mil to your quoted 4.64 mil = 54.7%, and the % increase from 4 mil to your quoted 6.18 mil is 54.5%.

What is your source for the past and current league average salaries?

I guess these numbers mean that the average NHL salary in ’05 has increased by 54.5%.

a 1st, a 2nd, and a 3rd round pick may not be too much for a particular team if they really want Seabs.

Offer sheets are still pretty rare, but then again, maybe when San Jose loses in the playoffs again this year, Wilson will sign Seabs to a 6 mil/yr offer sheet.

I was looking at Payrolls

on Capgeek. Of all of the teams that can both afford and need someone like Seabrook, I think it would be Buffalo. (He’d be great for Tyler Myers) I don’t think the Sabres would offer him the full $6 million but they could offer something in the mid $5 million range. I’m hoping that the Hawks can extend Seabrook’s contract during the season and the number is $5 mil or less. I guess the question for Buffalo would be if Seabrook was worth giving up a late 1st, 2nd and 3rd round draft pick.

Maybe, just once, someone will call me 'Sir' without adding, 'You're making a scene."

by Hack on Sep 13, 2010 5:19 PM CDT up reply actions

That's my main concern

it takes only 1 team to bring the big OS for Seabs. SJ scares me the most since we all know their real deficiency coming into 10-11 is on defence. But as you guys pointed out above, Buffalo could be in the picture too.

So it comes down to if the ’Hawks think they have a youngster or two waiting in the wings where they know they can replace Seabs impact and use the money elsewhere, or get him inked during the season for a reasonable price.

I too like your other suggestion of 4 yrs for $20M but don’t know if the ‘Hawks could secure him for that price. My guess right now is he’s in line for something North of $5.5 per on a 4-6 year deal.

Just win the next game...!

by blackhawk24 on Sep 14, 2010 6:14 AM CDT up reply actions

I don't think Management

will offer 4 years as this would coincide with Toews & Kane’s contracts ending at that time. My guess is both sides look for 5 years. At the end of that season, Campbell’s contract will be ending. Depending on what kind of contracts Kane & Toews get to stay here, there should be a decent amount of Cap Space available to keep Seabrook.

by AirTrafficAJ on Sep 9, 2010 6:35 PM CDT reply actions

I say 25

Do we want Bolland on the 2nd line? I know that’s what was intended when the contract was signed, but now that Sharp has proven he’s a very capable centre – and with Sharp on the wing we kinda lack depth on C, even with Potulny – I think he stays on the 3rd line for the majority of the season (Q’s tinkerings will place him on the 2nd line eventually, but it won’t last).

by Germware on Sep 9, 2010 6:49 PM CDT up reply actions

Sharpy at center

Sharp has said time and time again that he likes playing wing rather than center, and I definitely think that Bolland has the skill and grit to play at No. 2. Keep Sharpy on wing, keep Sharpy happy. Besides if you are gonna split up Daydream Nation and throw Brouwer on the first line, a line with Fabulous Weapon surrounded by Sharpy and dat Horsa guy sounds pretty good. (Plus still leaves room to shuffle the lines, as Q so loves to do)

I guess this will be our big pre-season debate

I can’t see how the Hawks could afford to move Sharp back to wing after his success at center last year? Why load all the talent on the top 2 lines, especially during the regular season when you need to spread out the minutes? Plus, it would leave us weak down the middle as centering the 3rd and 4th lines would be in the hands of two guys that have never played a full NHL season between them. On more thing, we’d basically go from being one of the best teams in FO% last year to being one of the worst. I believe Bolland and Potsies are both around 47% at the dot for their careers. Does not compute for me.

I think the "time and time again" part is a little unfounded

I’ve heard him say it once, maybe twice that he prefers playing wing, but he said over the the summer that he’s happy with playing center if that’s the role coach Q wants him in. He seemed more or less of proud of his versatility of being a winger/center forward.

by PDiggy on Sep 10, 2010 6:24 AM CDT up reply actions

too early to thrust bolland back into the number 2 center spot

I say give him another season on the third line. See if his back holds up, see if he continues to improve offensively, get him to improve at the dot. Depth down the middle is a big deal, and the hawks have it with sharp at center. If Bollie can prove he’s ready for it, then later this year or next year, the spot will be waiting for him.

Only forward lines

We currently have 15 forwards/potential forwards on the roster (13 if you don’t count Hendry & Scott). According to CapGeek, we have 15 non-roster forwards.

It depends on how rigorously you want to define a “line”, but I’m going to say, for example, Kane-Toews-Sharp is different from Kane-Sharp-Toews. For this, you ask how many permuations of 3 items there are in a set of 30. This gives you 24,360 different forward lines, or enough for 240 games & 2 periods if each line is given one 40-second shift together.

Good enough for you, or you want more number-crunching?

But damn that team is scary. I know that the Canadian harps about them every year but they have always been pretty weak at defense (pretty much their biggest fault) and now they have added Dan Hamhuis and Keith Ballard, two damn good defensemen. Maybe it will take the pressure off of Sami Salo and his oh-so-fragile groin.

Qvestions

1) What is your best guess at what the forward lines will look like in November (just to give Q some time to get his kinks worked out)? Show your work.
2) Should we look for a sophomore slump from Hjammer after an outstanding first full season?
3) Is the fact that Turco tends to be a rhythm goalie of concern, given that the Hawks don’t allow many shots and Q has a tendency to go switch-happy and kill any rhythm a goalie might have?
4) You are the new PP coach. What do you change from last year, and will this year’s shoes be gigantic and multicolored or smooth blue suede?
5) You are Mike Babcock (I know it’s gross, but bear with me). What would be your game plan for taking down this year’s version of the Hawks? If Babcock is too gross to contemplate, you can be McClellan or Vigneault instead.

Answer/Guesses

1)
Brouwer – Toews – Kane
Sharp – Bolland – Hossa
Stalberg – Potulny – Skille
Bickell – Dowell – Kopecky
Pisani
Keith – Seabrook
Campbell – Hjalmarsson
Boynton – Hendry
Scott
 Turco – Crawford

2) Hell no.
3) I don’t think Turco will Huet on us.
4) Don’t you step on my Blue Suede Shoes.
5) RE: Boob Cock, Mclueless, and Vagisil… good luck guys.

  • With the current roster do you feel that the best place for Sharp/Bolland is 2nd/3rd line center?
  • Although there will obviously be a lot of line juggling, do you think Q will try to spread out the talent on the forward lines or go with a more top-heavy lineup?
  • Will we witness the return of gmh and VerStig or revert back to the eye test, 10 month calendar, Swedish Erotica, and chiseling our comments onto the screen?
  • Aside from a couple of ogres and a few decent-sized players, have the Hawks gone all-in this offseason in the belief that “speed over size wins Cups in the new NHL”?
  • With the Cup in hand, have we outgrown the “little brother” inferiority complex or will nimrods still be chanting “Detroit Sux” and the like before/during non-scum games?

1) If Turco has hot streaks, do they let him play until he cools off a bit, or will management try to stick to the 50-60 game starts for his sake and Crawford’s?
2) What if Crawford doesn’t pan out as a backup? Would they give Toivonen a shot before looking for a trade?
3) Who, of the new guys, will have the best playoff beard?
4) Could Sharp hit 30 goals this year, or is he going to be half-sniper, half-play maker again (i.e. 20-25 goals)?
5) Am I the only one that expects Hendry to improve considerably? I have the feeling he will have an good year, what with all the experience he gained in 2009-2010.

I take Scott. His hair is too high up for Burrows to reach rendering him a nonfactor. The COTC would run away and Kesler would go down immediately. That leaves Scott to kick O’Brian’s ass.

Questions:

1) Kane’s points, over/under 90? I think we all know Toews will never stop wanting to improve and collect Cups, but will Kane possibly let up juuuuuuuuust a bit, considering he shut up a lot of his naysayers already, by winning a Cup and leading US players in scoring? I ask that, because it was mentioned that Kane will use what happened last offseason, and the subsequent trash talk about him, as motivation to get bigger/faster and kick dicks in…which he did. So, will he improve/level off/regress a touch, this season?
2) What’s the expected decible level of a meathead “booo”(s) the first time Turco allows a softy at the UC? Followed by, expected amounts of “We shoulda kept Anttiiiiiiiiiiiiii!” to come spewing forth?
3) A hosptial? What is it?

Dark Knight was great, we know, but holy fuck. I have seen this countless times in the last year on various blogs. This one included.

Tremendously tremendous

Batman Begins > The Dark Knight

Sure does

If you like bad writing and a horribly annoying Rachel Dawes.

It wasn't horrible writing

It wasn’t horrible writing, but the dark knight kicks it’s ass. Batman Begins seems so good because before that movie, the last image we had of Batman was this:

Adam West played a more serious Batman for Christ’s sakes!

Bad writing in Batman Begins?

Why bother seeing The Dark Knight? I liked Batman Begins more because I thought the story of his origin made for a better movie. Also it didn’t jump around like The Dark Knight. Don’t get me wrong, I liked The Dark Knight but I didn’t buy into all of the hype before it was released. I found Maggie Gyllenhaal to be far more annoying than Katie Holmes. For me, there wasn’t enough of Batman in the story and there was too much time wasted on the Bruce Wayne / Rachel Dawes / Harvey Dent relationship.

Batman Begins was a great take on the origins of Batman

No doubt about that. And I thought the movie was great when I first saw it. But after watching Dark Knight and rewatching Batman Begins, it seemed like the writing improved drastically in the sequel. Maybe that’s why Katie Holmes seemed to suck so bad. I’m not a fan of Maggie Gyllenhaal either (bordering on “can’t stand to watch her act”) but I thought she did a better job with the role. I’m actually semi-willing to concede that Begins had a better story, but DK to me had a better villain, better writing, and better action.

Also, holy shit I don’t remember Batman/Robin’s costumes looking like that in Batman & Robin.

by Ban on Sep 10, 2010 10:14 PM CDT up reply actions

That Batman & Robin movie was horrible.

It might be the worst movie made in the 90s. I would have walked out of the theater but my kids didn’t want to leave.

Anyway, I’ll stick with Batman Begins with it having a better story and writing. You’re right about the villain and there was more action in The Dark Knight.

who ...

of the new men in town will have the hottest new nickname in 2010-11?

I bet Stalberg will get the "hottest" nickname.

JUST A SEC'!! HEY!!!

Who will be the most realistic Blackhawk player to reach 30Gs FIRST in the 2010-11 season? Kane? Toews? Hossa? Sharp? Someone else?

Which Blackhawk will have a “career year” and who will have a “breakout year”?

Will Joel Quenneville be up for the Jack Adams Award this season as a serious candidate or will Barry Trotz finally win it after years and years?

Which Blackhawk “rookie” will have more playing time with the big club between them this 2010-11 season? Jack Skille, “The Edmonton Transplants”, or Corey Crawford?

Have you seen Turco’s mask? Isn’t it bad-ass!?

WHOS READY FOR SOME DEFENDING STANLEY CUP CHAMPIONSHIP HOCKEY!?!?

LETS GO HAWKS!!!

Questions

1) 3rd pair defense, if the trio of Boynton, Hendry, Scott should falter… who is most qualified/likely to jump in from Rockford?
2) Who will our 4 centers be?
3) Who will “shine” brightest in the Rookie Tournament starting tonight at 6:00PM?
4) Will Jack Skille make the opening night roster?
5) How many wins will Turco get this year?

I have only one question at this time

The Hawks are in Atlanta on November 6th. I just received an invitation for a Family Reunion for the same day.
My question is how do I get out of going to the Family Reunion without being cut out of anyone"s will?

What a great idea

It would only put me back about $50k and I’d have spend even more time with my relatives. Thanks but no thanks.

Questions
  • Who will be the first rookie to get the call up from Rockford?
  • Which departed Hawk will have the best season for his new team?
  • Gut feeling— who misses time for injuries this season?
  • What will be the single most divisive issue among Hawk fans this season?
  • How many All Star selections do the Hawks get?
  • Who takes the blame if the Hawks get off to a slow start?

he’s just too immature at this point, which he’s already displayed multiple times this off season.

My massive reply-fail Qs

From the other thread:

- Which of the new players (via trade) makes the most impact? Which is most disappointing?
- Which of the guys that were in Rockford last year makes the most impact? Which is most disappointing?
- Will any of these players make us forget about Ladd, Versteeg, Buff, Madden, Soepl et al? Which one of those players will we miss the most?
- Which of the core players will have a crazy good season? Which one will we want to expel from the core?
- What’s the over/under on another 100 point season?
- What kind of champagne should I buy now to prepare for another cup win in June?
- Will Sharp win the sexiest Chicago athlete? Will any other ’hawk challenge for the crown?

Yet another question

Does the NHL have a problem? Currently the Caps play in the SE division, which practically guarantees them winning the President’s Trophy again, purely by virtue of the fact that every other team in their division sucks. While the cap has helped parity, it hasn’t solved the problem that some teams play very easy seasons and some teams play difficult (specifically, the Central and Pacific look to be close). Other than retooling the division structures, is there a solution to the problem of certain teams coasting to a playoff berth while others fight against a much more difficult schedule?

by spokeinthebandwagon on Sep 14, 2010 12:15 PM CDT reply actions

is this an advantage?

seems to me team that are battle-tested are better off come playoff time. I always thought this was part of the Bears’ problem in the late ’80s.

btw- how about that dismantling of the Lions?

Do I know what rhetorical means?

by cliffkoroll on Sep 14, 2010 1:22 PM CDT up reply actions

you mean that wasn't a bad dream?

the Bears really did deserve to lose to the Lions?

by Katherine215 on Sep 14, 2010 2:04 PM CDT up reply actions

Most important question:

Which factor contributes to the overall improved attractiveness of the team: the addition of Viktor Stalberg or the departure of Brent Sopel?

Bonus question: Who should Patrick Sharp select as his new roommate/partner-in-crime given the departure of his previous hetero-lifemate Adam Burish?
