The saga of Tomas Kopecky
So i feel like I have to get this off my chest. I might get ripped for it but I'm willing to risk that. In the weeks previous, browsing around the fine digital community that is Second City Hockey, I noticed a recurring complaint. The subject of that complaint, as the headline would indicate, was/is #82. Many folks seemed to offer a glib, yet negative assessment of his play this season. Or curtly pass off his overall performance as mediocre at best. Probably folks who can't even tie a pair of skates.
I could be the only one here, but I found myself noticing this and shaking my head quietly to myself. I have to defend Kopecky on this one. I would argue he's been a player recently who is sent out there to spark the whole team.
- He settled a puck between 3 pretadors and roofed it in tight on the 15th of January tilt
-Scored 2 against the scum and carried the team to a comfortable victory on Saturday
-Just came off a good three game point streak going 3, 2 and 5.. (streaks for the whole team coming to a close against our good buddies the flyers on Sunday)
-Plays key minutes with Sharpie and Hoss
-Setting career highs in goals, assists and points at the halfway point of the season.
Even if you do not like his style of play, the aforementioned seems to me some concrete evidence that his game is shaping up enough to give the man some credit. I'm willing to overlook his -6 rating if he continues as such, in which case that will correct itself. Hopefully he does so I can say I told you so. But even if I get to be a little spiteful, everybody wins. So there won't be that much of a downside if I continue to be correct about my pointing out his solid play as of late, and predicting more of the same to follow. He isn't afraid to get to gritty areas and battle for pucks, and to me is a great combination of a crash and bang player with some great scoring touch.
So I said it, I think Kopecky is pulling his weight and I'm willing to verbally joust with those who dont.. ha but we're all Hawks fans here so I assume it will be playful. i expect Leg 2 of the season to be even better and I know the boys do to. Da Hawks.

That a Blackhawks alt-uni
They’re posted on some sites by artists (not sure if PJP made it). That one’s always been my favorite among the PC alt versions, but I hope the Hawks never change the current emblem.

why thank you
And while I think the original can never be replaced (best logo in sports), its an interesting interpretation of the blackhawks logo. It did not create it, but can’t remember exactly where I encountered it. possibly just a google search of blackhawks under images.
"Halak me now.."
The Stallion pt. 5
i have seen that logo featured in a cpoyright issue on
Don't TOEWS Me Bro!! - 2010 Stanley Cup Champions - James M. Fitzgerald is THE MAN!!
I am not a hater of 82 necessarily
but one of the things that just kills me is his tough guy act.
he will not answer any confrontations because his face is broken or something (as “reported” by Jesse rogers) yet he gets nary a c-hair away and in the face of some of the leagues most respected gritty players who would destroy him if given the opportunity. Again, they don’t get that opportunity because he tells them his face is broken and runs skates over to Hoss. That shit bugs me about his game.
since he scored the GWG in GM1SCF, though, he has been receiving a solid “pass” from me.
"...can i have a glass of whiskey and a slice of bread?"
In my opinion,
He is completely a product of the talent he skates with.
If you take any 3rd/4th liner, and give them the heaps of top-6 time that kopecky has gotten this season, they will surpass their previous career-highs. He isn’t a source of offense or worth playing on the 2nd line. He doesn’t hold on to the puck well, or pass well, or forecheck well, finish well, screen well, or skate well. I revile him more now than i did previously because now, playing on the 2nd line, he gets even more opportunities than he used to, and more often than not, flubs on those opportunities. He has done nothing to truthfully merit his time on the 2nd line.
His recent successes are an aberration. I pretty clearly remember one of his detroit goals being completely accidental.
The vast majority of my distaste for all thing #82 stems from his proclivity to fritter away scoring opportunities. He can’t seem to corral pucks, can’t seem to get shots off quite quick enough, can’t quite reach passes, can’t keep his feet in the crease, can’t quite, almost, just misses…. etc etc etc.
He’s fucking frustrating. If we could have two brouwers, we wouldn’t need kopecky.

I agree with all this...but
if he continues to produce while I sit there muttering about all the things that drive me insane about him (things that oregon_hawk has stated quite well) then I’ll take it.
Probably folks who can’t even tie a pair of skates.
I can tie my skates just fine, thank you :P
I think the fact is, while Kop isn’t ideal 2nd line material, he’s a more known quantity than any other option. Q doesn’t have patience to put Stals or Skills up there, and those two are the only ones I think could possibly be any good up there, given that we don’t want to fuck around with the 3-6 Mafia. Otherwise, I’d be willing to see what Bicks could do up with Sharp & Hossa, although all observations would be done while peeking through my fingers.
Indeed
He’s just not up to snuff playing at that level.
Most other guys on the the team would produce just as well – or better – if left there long term to play.
Now, to his credit, he does appear to be giving his absolute full effort all of the time.
Confusion will be my epitaph.
The Cup is ours until someone takes it from us.
It needs more cowbell.
Kopecky HAS worked his butt off to get to the net
at times when few other people seemed to. My frustration has essentially been oregon hawk’s last one. That finishing touch. There were plenty of times at the start of the season where he was in position to pot a goal off a great feed, and couldn’t do it. He couldn’t finish. And at the end of the day, he’s busting his butt to GET those shot opportunities, but they won’t mean anything without the goals. Now, you could say the same about Stals, Skillz, etc.. BUT, they’re young ’uns and you expect them to be 50/50. As you point out, Kop is a veteran on multiple Cup squads, so yes, I expect better finishing skills.
I guess all this comes down to me admitting that he CAN be great, and be that spark we nee, but i expect him to do so more consistently, and that’s where i get disappointed. That being said, he has looked much better lately on those finishes (just look at his goals against the Wings), and if he shows us that it’s him settling down for the rest of the season — as opposed to just being streaky — I wouldn’t mind it at all.

Hopefully he keeps putting up points
1) because someone needs to on this damn team it helps the team
2) some GM may want to trade for him then
Be respectful to those you meet but have a plan to kill everyone
Here we go
He settled a puck between 3 pretadors and roofed it in tight on the 15th of January tilt
A nice play for sure, but one that we certainly don’t see very often from him. Did I mention that the puck was on edge and that the goalie was reaching to poke the puck away (leaving a ton of space up top)? Nice goal, wouldn’t think it would change anyone’s opinion of him.
Scored 2 against the scum
Ok, good game against detroit. Players are capable of a good game once and a while.
Just came off a good three game point streak going 3, 2 and 5
A solid three game point streak (3G, 2A, = 5P, (I was confused with what you meant at first)). He also had a streak of 14 games this year, and in those 14 games he totaled 1 point. Not 1 point/game, 1 total point.
Plays key minutes with Sharpie and Hoss
Ok…. he’s the best option we’ve got there right now, does that mean that Sharp and Hoss wouldn’t be better off with an upgrade?
Setting career highs in goals, assists and points at the halfway point of the season.
True, but oversimplified. His ATOI is up over 5 minutes per game from last year (a 75% increase), I would certainly hope he’s on pace to have a career year, especially considering he was getting 1st unit PP time for a good chunk of the year.
I would argue he’s been a player recently who is sent out there to spark the whole team.
Well as long as we’re going with the eye test, I’d argue that he’s weak on his skates, plays with his head down, rarely has the right amount of touch on his passes, and doesn’t win nearly enough board battles for his role (to open up space for Sharp and Hossa).
Before yesterday’s game TomoKop’s penalties taken/ 60 minutes was 1.5, which is the worst on the team, and he’s a forward! Well maybe he’s drawn a lot of penalties?……….meh, his penalies drawn/60 – p taken/60 = -0.6, which is second worst on the team and certainly the worst for a forward on the team.
I’m kind of known as a Kopecky hater, but I’m certainly not going to root against him. He’s a hawk and he might be the best option we’ve got to put with Sharp and Hoss, but he certainly isn’t some irreplacable unsung hero.

who is worst in terms of Pd/60-Pt/60...
could it be boynton?
it is boynton
(again, taken before last night’s game)
Keith = -0.6
Kopecky = -0.6
Boynton = -0.8
On the other side of things
Hendry = + 1.1 (small sample size)
Kane = + 0.9
Toews = +0.9
Brouwer = + 0.9
Leddy = +0.8 (small sample size)

Although, I don’t think I would categorize either of us as Kopecky haters, but simply Kopecky realists. (I do believe Krome falls into this category as well.) None of us wish the guy anything but success. He just simply does not have the talent. Your point by point rebuttal was perfect.

I appreciate your guys’ input. Being a Kopecky realist is surely the most sensible way to approach it. He certainly isn’t the perfect human like Lindstrom (that’s actually his nickname) but I suppose in the previous weeks I noticed more slander than usual, obviously finding some of it unfounded. Cheers

Kopecky plays hard, you can tell
especially behind Sharp and Hossa.
(harhar)
In all seriousness, he seems to put out every night. (OK, OK, I’ll stop)
He’s probably one of the least talented players on the team, but I seldom see him slacking off. I can respect that. And I can respect that a lot more than someone much more talented who takes off shifts or doesn’t play up to his ability. It doesn’t mean I want Kopecky on my team, but while he is here I’ll root for him to succeed – while also being the first to make fun of him (tough love).
In regards to Kopecky’s current place on team. Last season I preached that he was miscast on the 4th line and that he had a 2nd line skill set, but he wasn’t talented enough to play there on a contending team. I still feel the same way. There’s really no place for him. He’s the weak link on the 2nd line, the 3rd line seems pretty set, and I don’t see Q putting him on the 4th line.
If you look at the current lines, they’re very similar to last year’s again. 5 of the 6 players on the top 2 lines are the same:
BROUWER-TOEWS-KANE (3/3 same as last year)
KOPECKY-SHARP-HOSSA (2/3 same) Now everyone sing “One of these things is not like the others…”
BICKELL-BOLLAND-PISANI (1/3 same) Difficult to believe, but this line is close to last year’s in many categories
SKILLE-DOWELL-STALBERG (0/3 same) I like Skille and Dowell, but Stalberg is this year’s Kopecky with more talent, but less drive (for lack of a better word). He’s miscast on the 4th line and couldn’t cut it on the higher lines.
(Quick note: I like how Q has gone to the 3-2-1-0 configuration, whether on accident or partial design. Earlier in the season I was an advocate of spreading out the talent and experience with 2-2-2 on the top 3 lines. Q tried something close to that and it didn’t work at the time. This appears to be an effective line-up when the team gives a shit.)
Personally, I feel if the Hawks could shore up the 2nd line on offense and get someone to play consistently with Leddy on defense, then they’re looking like a very strong team. BIG IF, but that’s why you’re seeing people strike out at Kop. Most commenters didn’t like him last season and now he’s in an even higher profile position on a team that is in a dogfight to make the playoffs.
Scrub, scrub, scrub, right down to the nub.
by ChicagoNativeSon on Jan 28, 2011 9:40 AM CST up reply actions
I think you're in the Kop "realist" camp now.
Kop (and Stalz) are tough to fit in on this team. Either of them could perhaps be a top 6 wing on a team like Edmonton or NYI. (Of course, so perhaps could I and just about anyone on this blog.) However, they don’t fit in with the guys the Hawks have. Agree completely about Skilz and Dowell. If Kane, Toews, and Hossa ever start to score, this team will be fine even with Marlboro 72 having their, ahem, unusual games. But for whatever reason, those three in particular have not been living up to our expectations.
39 years of pain (1971 loss to Habs) vaporized by one OT goal.
Considering I have no idea
what the benefit of having kopy on the second line is, I keep hoping I’ll see johnson get a tour on the 4th line in stalberg’s place, stalberg on the 2nd line in kopy’s place, and kopy scratched.
Clearly, the management doesn’t like johnson much. I don’t know enough about the little things in hockey to know why.
But it all does boil down to Kane/Toews/Hossa, and Keith/Seabs. They need to play like the players they are, or the hawks will go nowhere.
Ryan Johnson
He’s not a very good hockey player. I think we are always enamored with the “unknown”… the unknown player, the unknown line combos, etc. because the “known” becomes boring and/or ineffective at times. But more Ryan Johnson? No thanks.

Same here
Outside from being better at the dot than Kopecky, I’d much, much rather have Kopecky on the 4th line, but it will never happen for multiple reasons:
1. There’s no one currently to replace Kop on the 2nd line. Maybe Bickell, but Bickell hasn’t shown much net presence (although I assume he’s capable of it) and that would mean breaking up a productive 3rd line.
2. Kop has actually been the most productive fill-in on the 2nd line.
3. IMO Stalberg will not be moving back up to the 2nd line. That line needs someone to do the dirty work and that certainly isn’t Stalberg. Aside from speed, he hasn’t shown much else.
If you look at Johnson’s numbers for the 8 games he’s played, they’re not good. I didn’t notice him being so bad from the eye test, but his stats say otherwise. -4 already and 0 pts. He’s good at the dot, but not sure what else he brings, and how many draws does a 4th line winger take?. If he’s got PK skills, then maybe. I think he’s just insurance in case of injury to one of the centers. He’ll probably get to play a game once every couple of weeks unless he has a couple of good games.

He's been known throughout his career as a really good shot blocker
But he’s had some foot injuries in the last couple of years I think, and he doesn’t look fast enough to even scramble back into the shooting lanes to block shots.
