Morning Links - (10/14)
After ten minutes of sick wet dog hockey and a judicious time out, things improved mightily down at the United Center last night. There are a couple of concerns about Andrew Brunette's placement and the Leddy-Keith fun time hour, and I can only hope Jonathan Toews had the plague; however, your 2011-2012 Chicago Blackhawks erased a two goal deficit and then maintained a one goal lead for an entire third period. Taking care of business in quotidian games early in the season might be what these guys do.

Was before last nights game. It would be amiss to read too much into one game, but so far Carcillo (not withstanding his attempt on Hossa’s life) looked like a good addition. I’m excited about this squad, him getting a chance with Kane and Hossa included

the third line is pretty much set. If it doesn’t work out on the 2nd line, Carcillo will find a home on the fourth.

I think that's a safe assumption
29-36-67 has great chemistry, I don’t think Q will change that up too much. If Carcillo doesn’t work out on the 2nd line I would expect Stalberg, Olesz, and maybe even Smith or Morin (once both of their brains are de-scrambled, of course) to get a look on the 2nd line before Q gives any serious thought to breaking up Bicks-Bo-Fro

Photoshop of the Day and link to postgame thoughts

My thoughts on Carcillo: He had a “near perfect” intro game. Can he play that well every night? I doubt it. Remember, this was the Jets.
I also believe that when one of your players is taking runs at the opposition all night, it may create opportunities, but it may also influence the other team to take runs at your own players. Not sure i like that trade-off. An instigator does not prevent shit from going down, often he’s the cause.
And “The Wellwhiff” need to be added to the list of Wellwood monikers. That was hilarious, mostly because it was, well, Wellwood.

Taking runs? Do you mean forechecking? We don't want that?
Yeah, we don’t want opponants to hit our guys. They don’t do that now, do they? Like the Canucks didn’t do that last year in the playoffs.
Taking runs infers running out of position or out of control. I didn’t see that happening last night.

Car Bomb
Well, the BHup article was written b4 last nights game, and despite it only being 1 game, i thought Carcillo was great on the Kane/Hoss line. He got plenty of attention from the Wpg D-men and seemed to open up space for Kane n Hoss. He was physical and somewhat disciplined and added an assist. Small sample and it was a against the Threts, but I liked it. Roll on boys!
Waiting for the day when a Hawk 'accidentally' shoots a puck between the player benches and nails Pierre McGuire..
He also had a really nice feed to Hossa in the slot
that very nearly turned into another assist had it not been for a very quick flash out with the right pad from Pavlec. Even though it didn’t actually amount to anything, that feed was one of the most impressive things I saw from Kieth Stone last night – he was behind the net, was being pressured, didn’t have the puck for more than a few moments, and there was traffic in the slot, yet he still managed to thread a perfect pass right to Hossa’s stick and create a great scoring chance.
There are three types of people in this world: those who can count, and those who can't.

Threts is a fabulous nickname for a hockey team. It needs to become a Thing.
Maybe it’ll remind our team to wake up before they’ve played ten minutes of hockey.
Strangely, the “Two Freaks and a Slovak Machine” line really seemed to click, while the “Less Speed in 19-10” line didn’t. Preseason expectations would not have had Carbomb on Kane’s wing at all (or for that matter, anyone on Kane’s wing at all), and would have had Brunette a bit faster and more instrumental on Toews’s wing.
Shows what expectations know about hockey, I guess.

i was disappointed in hammer last night
granted, i didn’t watch the first period and i was trying to work during the game, but when i was paying attention he had turnovers/giveaways and seemed a bit lost. maybe i wasn’t playing close enough attention, but i don’t think i would trust him with leddy yet. probably best that he’s playing with seabs currently
That line needs some time to gel
They will work it out, all played in the NHL long enough and Toews will not expect anything less than perfection

went through it in the other thread...
but here’s a photo of the situation leading up to the Toew’s givaway:

Brunette was hustling back on D, taking away any passing lane that could have led to an easy Blake Wheeler goal. Pretty great hustle, IMO.
In this the shot is alrady in the corner. See the heads?
The puck is on the boards. Look up to my screen shot. #26 managed to get over by Toews. Funny how that works.
Hold My Stones
the difference in where the players end up is that Brunette has to stop and turn around while Wheeler turns into the play. Wheeler never stops and glides to the spot in your photo.

Brunette should be in the slot by that time. He plays in the NHL
What he thinks is that Toews has a lot of time, which he does, but Toews chooses the lame up the boards play, which is why you never stop during the game. Your teammate needs you to be in position. You are his outlet on this play. If you are not there, he either eats it, skates it, or tries to get the puck out off the boards/glass. We know what he tried to do. Sharp was the frontside support, but chooses to drift and stay in the N zone. Neither F2 or F3 is giving proper support. HOWEVAH, If Toews doesn’t make his play, this never even gets talked about.
I’m done talking about it, until it happens again
Hold My Stones
I like the freeze frame photos
But let’s look at the video too. This doesn’t show the setup of the play where Bruno is backchecking, only immediately after Wheeler’s failed scoring attempt. Looked to me like Brunette did the right thing given the situation, while Sharp is fucking around at the blue line with a Jets player between him and Toews.

With all the talent on this team,
Bolland has not gotten to play with any of it since Havlat. What Bolland has accomplished so far is really all Bolland. He makes his wingers look better than they really are (and no, I am not just thinking about Bickell). Can you imagine if he has some real talent next to him? I’m thinking BolSaadMor sometime down the line will be an outstanding group.
by stanfordron on Oct 14, 2011 11:37 AM CDT up reply actions
Talent
Bolland played with Hossa. It wasn’t until the playoffs that Sharp went back to center the second line and Bolland took the third. When Bolland was at 2C he was NOT all that.
At the beginning of last year before Bickell was stapled to Bolland’s hip, Bolland also wasn’t all that. Certain players can play on a checking line and just about everyone else can’t. Just because you have a couple of offensive kids in the future doesn’t mean they will be able to play on the third line. And I have seen nothing from Saad or Morin (in particular) that shows me you would even want to try.
Bickell has shown that he can handle the position. Frolik has shown, now on two teams, now that he can play on the checking line. And that he is good at it. Olesz before he was hurt showed he could do it. Hawks are lucky that they have a number of guys capable of playing that role. Don’t think for a moment that the Hawks are looking to upgrade at any position on that line.
Stalberg in the top six, imo, will have a much shorter leash than either Frolik or Bickell on the third.

I find it interesting
In some ways Bicks has taken over Ladd’s role as Bolland’s sidekick. But wasn’t the reason (aside from his scoring touch in juniors) we tried Bollie at 2C because it worked when he played with Havlat?
by VerStig on Oct 14, 2011 2:56 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions
Which time? 2009/10 or 10/11?
When Bolland moved up last season to play with Hossa, Bickell moved up with him. That line took on the other team’s top line.
In 2009/10 Bolland played with Hossa as a second line and Madden took the checking line responsibilities. That did NOT work out so well for Chicago.
Still say Legwand kicking the Hawks’ butt was one of the best things that happened to the Hawks. Q responded with Bolland at 3C and the rest is history. At least so far…

Great to go back to the UC
Some observations:
-I saw one of those weird ‘remove all color’ jerseys
-I saw a girl in a pink Kaner jersey (nooooo)
-There was 1 dumbass in the 300 level near my seat doing what I can only assume was that stupid dance during the PP but thankfully he was the only one I saw
-There were two people (I’m thinking teenagers but they were so far away it was hard to tell) sitting by the glass trying to do a Green Man thing but it was awful and embarrassing and I hope someone kicks them out if they try it again.
-And I don’t know if they showed this on TV, but Kane “checked” Buff and almost knocked himself over, it was hilarious.
I’m very happy that they held onto the lead and didn’t lose it all in the 3rd but the last 10 minutes of the game was pretty stressful.
I like your observations...
Someone needs to physically beat thr Green or Red or whatever lads. Just make sure they’re not on the SCH staff.

It's real easy to talk about folding other people's teams
…but it was only 5 years ago that the ’hawks were the second worst attended team in the league. 2006 and 2007 they drew 13,000 a game, barely more than the Islanders.
Dallas always drew fine, great even for a Southern team, until they literally went bankrupt (due to Tom Hicks being an ass, not because they aren’t successful). Carolina does more than fine for their market. Even in a bad year both teams outdrew that capacity of the damn MTS Centre.
Grumble grumble.
There but for the drafting of Kane and Toews go the Blackhawks...
Didn’t they used to stretch the truth about the attendance back then, too? 13000 was probably the number of eyeballs or something.

Carolina isn't an NBA area
they’re a college basketball area. They won’t see a corresponding spike in attendance if the lockout continues.
all right, this isn't going to be big on dignity
Seconded.
Generalizing here, but NC cares about Duke, not about the NBA. The Canes won’t see as much of a boost as more basketball-oriented areas like Florida, where they’ll be missing the Magic and the Heat.
by Steeg of their own on Oct 15, 2011 12:49 PM CDT up reply actions
NC cares about the Duke-UNC rivalry
like, NC State is there, but there’s a reason all the Canes players are coached to say they support the Wolfpack and that reason because it isn’t divisive to half their fanbase. The real give-a-shit is in Tar Heels and Blue Devils ball. It sucks Raleigh isn’t going to get helped out at all by the NBA lockout, but them’s the breaks
all right, this isn't going to be big on dignity
considering how many people live in the Greater Chicagoland area
and were an O6 team, it’s surprising we couldn’t muster 18,000 hockey fans in the UC for so many years. Hawks fans are the last people that should be getting on teams for not drawing.
all right, this isn't going to be big on dignity
I'd also add that
the Wolves were a cheaper (and more competitive) alternative during those years. They were probably drawing around 9000 people a game during the dark days of the Hawks franchise.
Maybe, just once, someone will call me 'Sir' without adding, 'You're making a scene."
Because Dallas, Phoenix and Florida (and hell, Atlanta)
were run by stunning management and ownership that’s super committed to putting superior product on the ice and encouraging fans to embrace the game? Really? You are incorrect as hell
I used to go to the old Stadium for years when they had a middling squad out there, except for Bannerman and the RPM line (1970’s era). Place was sold out for decades, despite the product out there. Not to mention you took your life in your hands if you stayed too long after the game was over. But Wirtz never kept any of his stars for long – we used to joke with the other fans how long before guys like Laarmer, Wilson, Roenick and so many others would eventually all be run out of town on a rail, and Dollar Bill never failed to disappoint. And ask yourself what other NHL club kept it’s own home games off TV for almost the entirety of the franchise’s existence, even though every other team had figured out the logical value of having this kind of valuable exposure for their product. Simply put, Dollar Bill never failed to poke a giant stick in the eye of all of the loyal fans who supported his club, no matter how mediocre they were at the time – he ultimately paid the price when far too many annual season ticket hikes caught up with a complete joke of a AHL – level hockey team he fielded out there.
This
nothing disappointed me more in this team than blacking out the product. It really turned me off to wanting to support the team, even though it was and continued to be my favorite Chicago sports franchise.
My first Hawks game was in ‘85 as a 10 year old. My dad gave me the choice between watching the Bears championship game vs. the Rams or watching a regular season game between the Hawks and Blues. The choice wasn’t even difficult for me despite the Hawks collapsing in spectacular fashion and the Bears moving on to the Superbowl.
that's what I said
bad ownership and management catches up to a club, no matter what.

Hey, about Hossa’s stick. It didn’t look unusually long to me in last night’s game. Did it to you?
Let's Go Hawks!
Long enough to score.
I think it’s fine, but he holds it with his hands close together so it looks long. That guy is unreal with the puck. How about another picture? (you are the person that gave me the photo skills remember?)

Hold My Stones
that is funny
And I don’t think the Hossa/Alien idea is too far fetched. I swear I saw a flash of a tentacle-like thing come out from his belly and protect the puck. But it was translucent like the Predator, so you really couldn’t see it.
LOL – yes I remember helping you post pictures way back when. But now, you’ve evolved into doing screen-caps and adding text to photos. You’re way above my skill level now.

Patrick Kane and Marian Hossa are kind of turning into Yeats on ice.

Oh, now you've invoked the poets.
With deepest apologies to Yeats:
Spin-o-ramas in their widening gyre
The hawker cannot hear the hawk he throws;
Things fall apart; but Cs and centers hold;
And anarchy they loose upon the world.
The red-black tide is loosed, and everywhere
The celebration of resurgence yet is crowned;
The worst lack all conviction, while the best
Are full of passionate intensity.
Surely some revelation is at hand;
Surely the Second City is renowned.
The Second City! Scarce those words are out
When a vast image out of Hockey Gods
Troubles my sight: a waste of desert ice;
A shape with feathered body, head of man,
A gaze as blank and pitiless as sun,
Is moving massive thighs, while all about it
Wind shadows of deserted buildings, scum.
The madness drops again but now I know
That half a century of stony sleep
Transformed from nightmare by a core from cradle,
Became a beast, its hour come round at last,
To slouch towards silver chalice to be borne.

What's the deal with Salak?
Hasn’t played yet and is not even the backup tonight.
I came here to ask the same question...
Richards getting beat up tonight.
Hogs just coughed up the lead
Had a 3-1 lead; Heat goals in the last minute of the second and two more in the first 1:45 of the third.
What I heard was that Salak was NOT happy.
Didn’t think he got beat out for the backup job and the hogs were giving him some time off. And those that think this was a good move because he would get more games in Rockford than as a backup forgot that Richards was there, too.
but wouldn't Salak get more games
as the starter in the A? I didn’t think Richards was better than Salak…or does the A have a different goalie rotation?
SCH Narc - check yo'self before you wreck yo'self.
How many more do you need to make it worthwhile?
I could see him getting as many as 45 AHL games. That is compared to what 27-30 NHL ones? Salak wasn’t going to get 55 games in the A with Richards there already. Not even sure he would get 45.
do all the goalies in the A switch back and forth for every other game?
I don’t pay much attention to the AHL; wouldn’t Salak play the majority of the games (same as Crow?)
SCH Narc - check yo'self before you wreck yo'self.
It's not like the NHL
Teams rotate their goalies in the AHL if there are multiple prospects. Crawford got 45 games in the A in 2009/10 and that was with Toivonen. Richards got 45 last year sharing with Toivonen.
With Richards there, don’t expect Salak to get more than 45. And 45 is pushing it.
ahhh I see.
I didn’t know that’s how the A did it.
