Is That Some Kind Of Eastern Thing? - Hawks 2, Bruins 2 (B's Win Goldeneye Tournament)
This wrap is now happening late enough for everyone to have found out the narrative of the game if you were really that interested in it, so let's just get right to my always brilliant and incisive commentary, shall we?
- Andrew Brunette, Jonathan Toews, Patrick Sharp - not working. On paper it seems like it should, but Brunette can't keep up with these two in transition, and Toews isn't a pure enough passer to make Sharp on a wing matter. On top of it all, Sharp is really starting to fight it, evidenced perfectly by the shorthanded 2-on-1 in the second where he slowed up and changed his angle completely to make a bad pass on his off wing. Were he more confident, he would have strided that out and fired that on Thomas.
- Duncan Keith and Nick Leddy - STOP THAT. Two Keith cock-ups led to both Boston goals, and he was damn lucky that Rich Peverley completely missed the net in over time. How in the fuck does Duncan Keith get beaten on a forecheck by a good stride and a half by Johnny Boychuck? Seriously Joel, you've not only killed your best defensive pairing by seperating them (7-2), but now you're killing your best defenseman individually by saddling him with an inexperienced and ill-fitting partner. If Quenneville wants to get serious about winning hockey games, he should have broken up this pairing in February.
- Speaking of Quenneville - John Scott. I guess it's pretty tough to drown a guy that tall in roster depth, huh? And if you're going to benching Rusty Olesz in favor of Scott, don't you kinda have to waive him if you're Stan? That's pretty indefensible cap and roster management by all involved.
- Wasn't this supposed to be the summer Marian Hossa got healthy for the long haul? Whoops.
- Not all is bleak however, first and foremost, with Patrick Kane. I guess it doesn't matter who is on his line this year, he will be motherfucked if he's going to be denied a point a game. Look out.
- Seeing Dave Bolland and Patrice Bergeron face off against one another all night was like trying to put two like-poled magnets next to one another.
- Nice to see Bryan Bickell got the memo about his coaches wanting him to hit people.
- For being outshot pretty handily (though I don't seem to remember 13 B's shots in the first), the vast majority of the Hawks were in the black on Corsi. Shows you how adept a team the Bruins are at blocking shots, or at least forcing the Hawks to miss the damn net.
- Don't look now, but Steve Montador and Sean O'Donnell are quietly forming a very nice third pairing. EARN YOUR MONEY, MARTANOR!
- For as good as Corey Crawford looked during the game, he seemed to come out a lot further and more aggressively in the shoot out than I remember him doing. The whole thing is a toss up and a farce anyway, but it's something to keep an eye on.
- Joe Corvo is still a woman beater and still a fucking asshole, in case anyone needed a reminder.
- If we're going to break balls for the power play song and dance (and yes, motherfuckers are dancing now), then I have to give credit where it's due. Nice work by the UC staff by using The Walkmen's "The Rat" during some kind of Dave Bolland montage, as well as the now seemingly regular use of Naked Raygun's "Soldier's Requiem" during stoppages. More big ups to Phil Russell, my mom's favorite Hawk from back in the day, who was signing 8x10's during intermissions, and was kind enough to sign something for her, and couldn't have been nicer about it.

He really needs to put 72 back together

and if we're not
we should be putting Seabs with Leddy and Duncs with Hammer. Biscuit’s game is exactly the sort of thing that could make up for the shortcomings in Leddy’s. I’m all for re-uniting Marlbro 72, but if the concern is over Leddy’s d-partner, then I literally don’t understand why Duncs is stuck with the kid rather than Seabs.
all right, this isn't going to be big on dignity
very true
but on the upside, leddy is showing some progress. letting off shots, making some good body/stick plays and showing some hustle.
by putmeinthemadhouse on Oct 16, 2011 2:50 PM CDT up reply actions
seabs and leddy both play right D
i mean one of them could switch, but that’s not exactly ideal either
I’m cool with either Keith or Seabs being paired with Leddy. It’s not like the alternatives are all that appetizing. Hammer has been less than stellar, which narrows the pairing possibilities, IMO.
I understand everyones frustration, but Leddy has exceeded my expectations
I think we will see continuous improvement, and probably will see different pairings because – well, Q is a bit nutty.
Take us to the Silver Chalice!
Agreed.
Leddy has changed my opinion rather fast. I don’t blame him for the defensive lapses as much as I do Keith. It seems like he just makes bad decisions and it has nothing to do with him trying to overcompensate for being paired with Leddy.

Leddy is progressing very well - the question is whois he better suited to play with
The Leddy Keith combo is just plain puzzling
Fighting stupidity since 1958 (its a much bigger task than originally envisioned).

Related question: Are Keith's struggles a result of being paired with Leddy or something different entirely?

I'm worried about the D corps
What Q is doing is managing around the problem, which is Leddy and Hammer. These two should be together, but Q obviously doesn’t trust them that way. I’m still stuck on why did we trade Soupy, obtain Olesz and keep Hammer? Olesz and Hammer cost almost as much as Soupy did.
depth. That’s the answer to your question. It frees up quite a bit of salary space elsewhere. Not saying it’ll be the right move, but it seemed logical enough to me.
I really think Leddy is better off playing bigger minutes with Keith in the first half of the year. Towards the latter half, I think it makes more sense to pair him up with Hammer.
Then again, I might be in the minority in not really worrying to much about the quality of defense up to this point. Montador is playing much better, Lepisto looked really good in his only game and while some careless mistakes have been made, the defense has looked much more solid than they did last year at this point.
It freed up about $1 million, and we're still several million below the cap
Soupy cost $7 million and change and Hammer/Olesz cost $6 million and change. I think we could have gotten the same amount of depth by keeping Soupy and losing Hammer. I will admit, however, that Hammer does more dirty work than Soupy did, but Soupy is overall a better player offensively and was underrated defensively.
by maxachium27 on Oct 18, 2011 11:14 AM CDT up reply actions
you’re not getting it.
It freed up $4 million; it’s the difference between Soupy’s and Olesz’s contracts. That’s $4 million to spend on an EXTRA roster spot.
No I get it
I’m saying they should have dumped Hammer ($3.5 mil) and not bothered to sign Olesz ($3 mil) and kept Soupy. This year they are spending $6.5 on Hammer and a doormat, rather than having Campbell.
well his two goals thus far were PP goes. And he's def shown good hands around the net.
Its just all other times that he’s a bit too slow to keep up

Not sure where the fuck you are coming from on this one. How’s Marco Strum working out?
I hate you
It wasn't a slam against the Hawks,
Touchy much. Brunette is a good PP player but he is slow as fuck compared to his linemates. I notice his playing time is low but for $2 million it may be a great deal. As long as he stays healthy.
Sturm was an experiment if you ask me, and it sucks so far.
Kesler > Sturm
Yeah, I think that's why he actually got moved from the 2nd line initially, to the first
because while he’s too slow for Toews and Sharp, he was really waaay too slow for kane and Hossa. When he gets to the net he does really good things though.
Do you think Kesler will be ready to play sometime soon?

Rumor has it that tomorrow Kesler could go
The Nucks are trying to find a second and third line combination that works without him. At least we got to see that Hodgson can actually play and should be a good winger for Kesler.

what are the chances Brunette “stays healthy”?
meh.
Brunette wasn’t brought here for his speed, people. He was brought here to be a force in front of the net, and contribute to the PP. He’s done his job. And I hardly blame him for Toew’s slow start and mental lapses up until now. Toew’s game will continually get better as the season progresses, regardless of who he’s playing with.
He wasn't brought here for his speed, but its helpful if he can keep up and get to the net on a rush
instead of lagging behind.

that’s a physical limitation we just need to accept. Knowing what we know about Brunette’s quickness in relation to our elite players, which line would you put him on?
well that's the problem, isn't it?
I like what he can do on the PP, and his skills around the net when he gets there. But I don’t want him to hinder a line that is built on speed. Guess we’ll just have to see.

easy Hjammer
I can tell you exactly where he’s coming from; Brunette has been bad at even strength so far. It’s only been 4 games, and he definitely isn’t used to skating with his current linemates, so it’s too early to come to a conclusion on what kind of year he’ll have, but I’m not sure what line he fits on right now.

Brunette has been okay at even strength. I’m willing to give him a few more games to see if that line will develop into something worth salvaging. He’s been beastly on the PP though.
I too have no clue which line he fits into. He may be an okay option on Kaner’s line. While he can’t keep up with Kane, #88 is so shifty that it allows an offense to develop and get slower players like Brunette to their spot on the ice.
he started out on Kaner's line, and I didn't think it worked really well

I thought Brunette with Kane and Hossa played fine in the preseason. Seriously though, where do you think Brunette fits in best?
Preseason is preseason, right?
I don’t think he was horrendous in the first actual game but I did think the difference in speed was noticeable, and was/can be a hinderence to 88-81. I don’t have a solution to where he best fits though.

What are your pairings if you put 72 back together?
I don’t understand why you’re so opposed to the 82 pairing. Leddy cannot be put with Hammer (imagine the turnover orgy that would occur in the defensive zone) or on the third line. Montador is not good enough to be on the second line and he wouldn’t match well with Hammer anyways. The pairings are fine; the problem is that our forwards are out of whack because of injuries. Carcillo-Kane-Stalberg as our second line? And you think that Keith and Leddy are the problem?
yes, keith and leddy are a problem.
when they consistently do stupid shit that leads to goals. i mean, that’s a problem, right?

by Coz_Bulls_Fan on Oct 16, 2011 2:56 PM CDT up reply actions
82 is an even plus minus for the year.
And that is with Brunette being a -3.
And the shorty that Keith was on the ice for, well, Seabrook was on the ice then too.
In a word
Yes. 13-88-25 is a perfectly serviceable line because of Fuck You Kaner. Not saying that Stals should be anywhere near that line if Hossa is healthy, but I think Kane’s pretty much proved that he’s going to propel whatever dead weight skating with him into competence. 8-2 gives up goals and generally does not make sense. Not sure a 7-2 pairing is the solution, but throwing 8 with 2 is clearly not working. I wouldn’t be opposed to a 7-8 pairing if we’re going to play D-man slot machines. Would leave 2-4, which might not be a terrible idea given Hammer’s famous offensive struggles.
I don't understand the forward line injuries thing
The only line that was really impacted was 2nd and they didn’t seem, to me, to be an issue last night (though obviously Hossa needs to come back pronto). Injuries didn’t cause Toews two giveaways last two games and a goal. Injuries didn’t cause the D,at least twice, to just leave the puck sitting there instead of picking it up and leading to Bruins possession and a goal.

Um, yeah. 82 pairing is a problem.
When I feel better about my 3rd line D pairing being out there than the first line pairing, that’s a problem.
The problem is Leddy and Hammer
They should be together and Q doesn’t trust them. We should have traded Hammer and keep Campbell. Hammer and Olesz, who we got in the Campbell deal, cost almost as much as Soupy did.
you keep saying that Hammer + Olesz cost almost the same as Campbell but you fail to acknowledge that it allowed the team to fill one more roster spot for the same $$$. We should also keep in mind what the long-term effects of the Campbell contract were.
I'd agree if Olesz was playing quality minutes
. . . but he’s not. So basically we’re getting Hammer instead of Campbell for almost the same amount of money. Yes, you’re right about the long-term effects of Campbell’s contract.
by maxachium27 on Oct 18, 2011 11:16 AM CDT up reply actions
no.
What we’re basically getting is Montador + Olesz for ~$5.8 mil (savings of over $1mil) and an extra roster spot taken. Plus we get rid of a potential long-term financial liability.
It has nothing to do with Hammer as you keep alluding to.
Not to mention...
that Lepisto and O’Donnell come in at $1.5 million total. We basically replaced Soups with Olesz, Montador, Lepisto and O’Donnell. Four players at just $300k more than Campbell’s salary. That does wonders in terms of what we can afford elsewhere, being able to resign Sharp and bringing in a high quality guy at the trade deadline…
No
You keep forgetting that I’m factoring in the loss of Hammer rather than Campbell.
The D corps could look like this: Keith, Seabs, Campbell, Leddy, Montador, O’Donnell, Lepisto, etc.
And Olesz would not be on the roster
That’s a savings of $6.5 million, rather than the $7 mil+ per year we’re saving without Campbell
you also don’t have the money to resign Sharp or make improvements at midseason. You would be handicapped moving into next season and what exactly would you be trading Hammer for?
There's only a $1 million difference in my scenario. . .
. . . and the Hawks are several million under the cap.
All I’m saying is the Hawks COULD HAVE kept Soupy, not obtained Olesz and traded Hjalmarsson for picks. This would have saved $6.5 million rather than $7 million and change and allowed them to do everything else they did with adding depth and keeping Sharpie.
I think McD and Bowman are doing a bit of smoke and mirrors with the salary budget. They got rid of one “bad” contract in re: to Soupy but I think the Hammer and Olesz contracts are just as “bad” over the short term.

Am I alone in thinking the Hawks have been playing really well?
No team is ever going to play a perfect game. Yes, they’ve had a few flat periods, but overall I think they’ve been clicking wonderfully, and its only going to get better as the season progresses. There have been hiccups, sure, and some of Q’s decisions are questionable, but I’m thrilled overall. If you told me over the summer we would start 2-1-1. I wouldn’t complain.

It's amazing how up and down we get after every win and loss
It’s part of being a rabid sports fan, I guess.
Honestly though, you can count me among those who need to increase my kool-aid dosage. This is the second game in a row, after our widely publicized woes last year (there were some appalling stats to back this up, I believe), where we struggled to hold a 3rd period lead. Whether it’s coaching, conditioning, in-game depth, or just individual effort, something does need to be fixed.
I think in some ways the ‘Hawks aren’t pacing themselves very well. Q still having issues managing Keith’s minutes, Kaner going into fuck you mode too early, and I’m starting think that big Hoss really needs to learn that he’s not in his 20s anymore and doesn’t need to manhandle everybody off the puck on every play. Pace yourself so you can last a whole season…
it is disappointing to see Keiths numbers creep up so early in the season
and Hossa out so soon. But if Kane wasn’t in fuck you mode so early, there’d probably be a lot of complaints about that too, though i agree in the sense that I don’t want him to get burnt out.

I agree 100% ... but (heh)
Does anyone else think we let one go there? I was so pissed about some of the mental errors in that game. I mean, they happen, even to the best teams, but that short-handed goal was laziness in the o-zone (before the awkward carom), and the Boychuk rush made me sick. I was livid at how we managed to lose, not at the loss. And our power play needs a serious kick to the face; that is pure dog feces.
My problems so far through 4 games:
- Brunette, my god, seems to have become slower, and it scares the bejesus out of me
- I think Leddy has actually played well, all things considered, but Keith has to grow a head. I don’t want to ask too much of him, but he’s a Norris calibre d-man. Skating with Leddy and asking for Norris-quality play is asking too much, but I don’t care who he’s skating with, we can ask that he not leave his brain in the dressing room.
- I echo McClure on the third-pairing
- I echo everyone on wondering how the fuck it is that John Scott gets chances to be on the ice as a forward
- although still early, I am ready to admit my mistake re Carcillo
www.mjt.org
I think we all feel we let one go.
The Hawks of the first 35 minutes were pretty impressive. I actually started thinking the only thing that could beat us this season was ourselves…which we promptly proved. If they can stretch that 35 minute effort into 60 consistently, June 2012 should be pretty interesting.
I'm a pimp, and pimps don't commit suicide.
They are not looking like wire-to-wire and that concerns some people who don't want any drama given the shitty state of affairs last season...
But Tazer and Sharpie will be fine and quite soon…
Defense shuffling will happen soon enough, Q ain’t afraid to do that…
And I love the Koolaid, and I really like the overall direction of the team, BUT WTF is with Scott as forward/ any position??? This one issue makes me and a lot of others have no faith that management has any clue and therefore makes us feel like jumping at any sign of adversity…I think that’s the deal

I know last year sucked so we’re kind of paranoid on this issue, and it is a serious one, but I personally don’t count the WPG game; first because we came back from being down two to begin with, and we pulled out the win pretty handily I thought despite giving one up. last year was a frustrating haul. They couldn’t even complete two consecutive passes at this point last year. It was a total clusterfuck. The only thing we had going for us was Skille crashing into opposing nets at a record clip.
He was a master at that
And I loved every second of it. He may not have been the most effective scorer around but his bull dog attempts were always hilarious
Afroman likes tall cans... of Daisy Cutter Pale Ale
My thoughts:
I put both goals against on Sharp, not Keith. Keith may have made physical errors but Sharp being out of position (looking for a fast break) is what made good scoring opportunities.
Yes about 72. Leddy needs to be a three. He is a leader, not a trailer. Who can he be paired with? Is lefty/righty more important than having your best players on the ice?
If Bickell got a memo from the coaches, it was about defensive mental lapses. Last night was easily his best game in that regard. No brain farts. No Alice-in-Wonderlnd plays. There is certainly no problem with his offensive game.
If they are going to play against third lines, I’d like to see Sharp play with 81-88. But then who would play with 19-15?
I think Olesz sat because of his mental lapse in the D zone against Winnipeg. That is Q’s biggest peevy.
but hasn't the 88-81 line not really been playing against other teams 3rd lines?
Granted I don’t know the lines for all the other teams though.
I’d also like 10-19 and whoever their third person is to remain. Doesn’t seem like 81-88 need him to do well, but I’d like Toews to have talent, speed, and an offensive threat to play with.

Lines
The Toews and Kane lines have been interchangeable on line match-ups. Chara played them about evenly. They played the second and third Bruins lines evenly. I was NOT expecting Q to treat Kane’s line that way. And that is WITHOUT Hossa.
And this is the second game in a row where the other team was in full Random Line Generation mode more than Q.
Random Line Generation
as in shuffling line matchups? Or as in shuffling the lines themselves? I’ll admit I’m not very good at picking up other teams doing their own line shuffle, unless it’s a well-known top line like the Sharks’ or ‘Nucks’.
I think Foley/Edzo mentioned that
the B’s weren’t happy with the matchups that Q was able to get, and so they kept doing some rapid line changes (when they could) to try to get more favorable matchups.

That's what I thought, I noticed them both playing the Seguin line in particular for example, and with Chara on D.
It is interesting, everyone thought Q would try to protect Kane but that has turned out not to be the case, even with a line of Carcillo and Stalberg.

Right on about Scott. The only thing I remember him doing is being off side to ruin a 3 on 2 break. Yes, Kieth is skating with an inexperienced partner, but he has been since new years day and he should know better. Both goals a result of defensive (not defense man) breakdowns. Come on, Sharpie.
And at the risk of having things hurled my way, I’ll repeat myself from the other day: This business of packing it in and trying to hold on for dear life in the third must stop. It’s a 60 minute game. Play hard for 60 and you’ll win 7 out of 10 games.
I plan to live forever, or die trying.

I hope people got names and license plate numbers
Of the people in 333 who attempted to start the wave on multiple occasions during the third period. They should never be allowed to get within five miles of the UC ever again.

Week 1
What we learned: the Winnipeg Jets can make your team look very good. The defending Cup champs can make your team look bad. Doubting Kane can make you (read: me) look stupid.
Eh, I feel like the hawks loss in momentum had more to do with the Hawks then the B's
But its just 1 game in 4 (and I’d rather they get the kins out now then later) – I’m confident they’ll come out firing next game.

Agreed. It looked like a decided lack of giddy up on the ’Hawks behalf in the third. Or as my wife put it (she loves hockey, but is still learning about blue lines) “They took their foot off the gas.”

Kane is absolutley destroying anything I've ever had against him
and it feels so good to be proven wrong. For some reason I’ve always been slightly against the idea of getting a Kane jersey but he is being one heck of salesman with the way he’s been playing
Thoughts after the Bs
- Could someone please tell Patrick Sharp that the season has begun and he’s not just playing shinny anymore? His floating high cost the team at least one goal last night, possibly two. Agreed with McClure that it looks like he’s really fighting it, and it’s hurting both his numbers and the Captain’s.
- Carbomb and Kaner: a thing. I’m surprisingly okay with this.
- Don’t know where the Bickell we saw last night came from, but can we keep him? He was good in both zones, and didn’t do anything egregiously dumb as we’ve seen in the past from him. If he keeps this up, Dave Bolland will throw him a party before November starts.
- The coaching staff, on the other hand, didn’t get the ’don’t make mental errors’ memo. Scott? Not pulling out DDN in OT until the last :30? The desperate line shuffling that went on in the third? The godawful, hideous, put-down-the-Gorgon-we’re-turning-to-stone PP? Shape it up, fellas.
by Steeg of their own on Oct 16, 2011 5:29 PM CDT reply actions
do you mean line shuffling of which line was playing who's line against the B's
or the line shuffling in terms of who was playing on each of our own lines?
Our PP was absolute pants last night, and there’s no reason, in that situation to NOT get DDN as much time on ice as possible. I hope Sharp can pot another goal, maybe that’ll get him back in the groove of things. Bickell was damn good last night, as was Kaner.

I meant who was playing on our lines
as some of the ‘whose line was playing whose’ shuffle can be attributed to adjustments by the Bs (who were doing their best impression of Q with the quick changes for matchups).
I actually don’t care about Sharpie scoring goals, I have faith enough in his talent to think that eventually the points will start going in. I just want him to be one iota of defensively responsible, even when he’s not scoring goals.
by Steeg of their own on Oct 16, 2011 5:51 PM CDT up reply actions
I actually didn't notice much of that last night, even in the third, but I may have missed it
And yeah he does have to stop with the floating, but do wonder if he’s just really struggling to get going offensively and that’s part of the problem.

I miss two-way Sharpie...
And yeah, as per my confusion over DH’s “line generator” comment I only apply that label to Q’s line jumbling, and I feel like I saw a lot of it. Maybe it was just me being hypersensitive to lines after special teams play…
by VerStig on Oct 16, 2011 7:19 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions
Agreed.
The Q line-generator was in full swing in the third, and it irked me, because I’m increasingly getting the feeling that it hobbles our guys instead of enabling them. But yeah, the PP play may have something to do with that feeling.

Third period faceoff's
Outside of Kruger occasionally subbing for Stalberg who was coming off an injury. Where is there a line generator? 5o5 Faceoffs in the third? I mean not counting special teams, or coming out of them?

Good news so far: the Ducks are beating the Bluesers.
Hiller owes a debt to MVP, but so far so good for the guys who are not in our division.

That is actually important info about Joe Corvo.
I wish Foley and Edzo would have mentioned that last night instead of stressing that he’s from Chicago. (I know they probably can’t but whatever.)
I never knew about it
Same with Ziggy Palffy. So much for the “hockey players are generally more respectable than most pro athletes” smugness I so enjoyed.

I wish Pay and Eddie
would pull their heads out of Leddy’s ass. I swear to god, they make a huge production out of him lacing his skates properly and how amazing it is for a 20 year old to do this. I’ve thought Leddy’s done well, but having every little thing he does be made to sound like it’s the cure for cancer is a bit much. It seems like their homerism has been much more evident this season so far (not just on Leddy either).

Perhaps OT and yesterdays news...(I was out of town all weekend)
Thrilled to see Jeremy Morin returned and scored for the Icehogs Friday. I hope he makes a full recovery.
I gotta get to the Vancouver Wolves game Friday
Take us to the Silver Chalice!
Yeah such great news
after being out for such a long time, so great to see him come out and score a goal first game in. Hope he’s fully healthy now.

and a fight.
So, not well.

To be fair to Beach, the team only managed 13 shots on net. Froese and Fahey combined for 7 of those shots.
Hard to tell what kind of night Beach had.
Hasn't the word been that Beach was playing pretty well this season for them?

yup
Only had 2 PIMs, three goals and an assist through his first 3 games. His first fight of the year game in game 4. Color me impressed.
Like Carcillo, some people are going to shit on that kid just because...

Well CarBomb is not good at hockey
and is taking up a top six spot and has rock hard hands. It is what it is.
He is out there to deter someone from doing something stoopit to Kane at which he has been successful thus far.
Clearly Kaner can do everything by himself so having 1 or 2 glorified body guards isn’t really hurting anyone so I deem shitting on unnecessary at this point in time.
by TurdFurgeson on Oct 17, 2011 10:44 AM CDT up reply actions
I don’t like Carcillo, but I’m not sure I buy into your premise. While CarBomb is not a top 6 guy, him being there while Hossa is out isn’t a terrible solution.
I also don’t think Carbomb is a lousy hockey player. His speed is an asset. So is his energy when it’s not out of control, which unfortunately can be an issue (not only in terms of causing penalties, but putting himself out of position).
And I’m not sure Carcillo will be a guy who deters anything. If anything, he’s the kind of guy that can infuse a game with an added level of physicality and punishment against our own guys.
for a guy with rock hard hands, he did a damn good job helping out at the wall
leading to Kaner’s first goal.

Total third period breakdown
I was there and you could feel the lack of energy- maybe because our guys sensed that the lines were so so mercurial.
