Sorry To Keep You Waiting - Caps 4, Hawks 1
Some thoughts from one last meaningless walk-through, this time against a Caps team playing most of its regulars.
- It was an interesting choice for Coach Q to come back with Corey Crawford for tonight's final exhibition tilt with the backup derby between Ray Emery and Alexander Salak still very much open for discussion. As the WGN crew alluded to, it seems that Q has made his mind up with what he's seen so far. Even though Salak has empirically outplayed Emery, for the sake of system depth, it says here that Razor starts the year with the big club. As for Crawford, overall during this preseason he's looked solid and figures to pick up where he left off last year.
- In spite of it not making a whole shitload of sense in the event that Patrick Sharp is healthy by Friday, it appears that Patrick Kane will start the year centering Marian Hossa and Andrew Brunette. The trio has flashes of dominance, but Kane in particular has been prone to taking some bad penalties on the back check, with another hook coming tonight. With Kane learning on the fly, and Andrew Brunette moving about as fast as Paul Konerko going first-to-third while on a fistful of ludes, it's going to be up to Marian Hossa to be the first man back on that unit. We know he's got the ability and the will to do so, but is that really the most efficient use of his energy?
- The first power play unit looked really solid, and contributed the lone Hawks goal. Sami Lepisto has got a pretty good amount of offensive upside and showed it on the advantage, but again got outworked in front on the second Washington goal, and Mathieu Perrault doesn't exactly inspire favorable comparisons to teammate Mike Knuble in terms of net presence. Fellow newcomer Steve Montador has been fighting it a little bit. Hopefully once the pairs get stabilized and the two of them are facing 4th line bums it'll look a little better, but it hasn't been a great camp for either.
- In a related story, Sean O'Donnell is still Sean O'Donnell.
- This was the most noticeable Marcus Kruger has been, but Brandon Pirri was still visibly better. So much for "the plan all along".
- Alex Semin took an embarrassing dive on the collision with Peter Leblanc, which isn't all that surprising. Doesn't stop it from being punkass move.
- Can we please be done with the same fucking techno song in every arena for the power play? This nonsense started with the Blues, the Capitals use it, and now the Hawks are guilty of it at the UC too. No one wants to copy anything that comes out of St. Louis except Waffle House, and even that didn't start there. This, this, or even this would be far more original and exponentially less annoying. That change will never happen, but that's not going to stop me from wanting it.
- Please let this be the last we see of John Scott for a very, very long time.

How many penalties did the Hawks take tonight?
I know it was a mishmash of guys out there, some of whom won’t be on the ice much after next Friday (we hope!) but every time I flipped to the game we were killing a penalty. Even a 5 on 3. It will be nice to see the “regular” crew out there.
So, when are the season prognostications coming from the triumverate?
Thank you Boston for saving us from a dreadful summer! Now, GO HAWKS!!!
I'm not sure about all the other letters you wrote, they all kinda went blurry since I am now focusing on real games,
Except this part which somehow made it to my grey matter, and I am in full agreement with

(not that the write up is bad, just its pre-season, well you know the drill)

Can Pirri be anything more than 4th line this year? Would they consider bumping Bolland up to fill the dreaded 2nd line C position with Pirri on the 3rd line and Smith/Kruger/Mayers on the 4th?

No
Bolland is the shut-down center. He may play on the 2nd line for a bit if injuries hit hard, but he’ll be on the 3rd otherwise. He’s extremely useful there and with his great defense, he can set up his line for some great offensive chances as well.

And especially w/the Kaner at C thing
I give up trying to assign line numbers to our top 9 forwards.
I never got a good look at the leblanc incident..
if the dive was as bad as you say, I hope shanny makes a video and calls his punk-ass out.

the replays were woefully limited
as they were for Bick’s ‘non-goal’.
I'm a pimp, and pimps don't commit suicide.
LeBlanc's hit
is probably worth 5-8 games.

Maybe, just once, someone will call me 'Sir' without adding, 'You're making a scene."
That's a perfect description
Too bad Semin didn’t get called for embellishment.
Maybe, just once, someone will call me 'Sir' without adding, 'You're making a scene."
Isn't it Semin's fault for not looking at Leblanc?
He turned his head to look at the puck instead of the hit.
I am just joking about this. I do not blame the victim here, I just can’t believe I haven’t read that argument yet about this hit.
Respect my Authoritah!..........Eric Cartman
To me
there doesn’t seem to be contact with the head. I’m not saying it isn’t an elbowing penalty, but it appears he elbows him in the shoulder.
no theres head contact
his forarm is across his shoulder, elbow in the head.

found a youtube video of the hit
I didn’t get to watch tonight’s game, visiting the in-laws.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eh5FKHArm0Y
It really doesn’t look like a violent hit. Semin acted it out ad nauseum (pun intended) and drew the major and misconduct. Espn has it as a Match penalty for Deliberate injury. We will see what the Shanahammer does. I think the embellishment should result in a 1gm suspension for Semin. I wish they would get rid of that crap. It’s not Euro Football. Are Euro hockey games this bad? Whenever you see acting (usually bad) it seems to be from a Euro player or a canuck.
I have a FEVER and the only prescription is MOAR DAGGER!
The Enemy's Gate is Down
The Cannots are now looking to pick up Semin based on his acting skills
Watching the youtube vid, it looks like LeBlanc realized he was going to plow into Semin, tried to push off the shoulder with his hand/forearm, and his elbow contacted the head.

What we all must remember is the head shot rule is defined by one word.
“Principle” point of contact, so Shanny may only give the kid a game or two. Plus Semin does put himself in a vulnerable positon prior to the hit.
Its a bad hit none the less because the contact to the head.
When I decide to change my personality I will let you know what I become.

5-8?
No chance in hell. 4 regular season games, and that’s tops. My guess is 3. Semin dives like a Sedin.
You're probably closer than me
The NHL better address this embellishment bullshit. I don’t know if you saw this flop by Justin Abdelkader on Friday. I’d like to see Shanahan start calling out any player that’s guilty of this during his reviews.
Maybe, just once, someone will call me 'Sir' without adding, 'You're making a scene."
Haha
Yeah, I saw that. It’s sad. As much as I like what Shanny’s doing, I do fear that players will take advantage of it. It should benefit the NHL overall, but you know there’ll be players that abuse the rulings.
I doubt we’ll see him calling out dives though.

One of the first things I read after the Smith on Smith hit
was someone saying that from now on all players were just going to drop and lay on the ice after a hit to get the call. And while that pissed me off a LOT given Ben Smith was clearly knocked out, it did make me think that we may seem more of that, which sucks. Dives definitely also need to be called out and penalized more.

Those are Detroits announcers, right?
They sure make it pretty obvious and point out that Abdelkader was trying to sell it.
its a tough call
the head was not the initial point of contact. his elbow actually landed closer to the base of the neck. the head contact came after but I wont argue with final ruling. it was reckless.

Yeah that was my first reaction
In the game thread I said it looked like a “neck hit” more than a “head hit”
It seemed like it,
and I say suspension for being an idiot.

I think the following song would be great:
THIS! Has a really good repetitive riff (keep it in line like Sandstorm) heavy as all hell. And the song is called “Bleed” so it all works perfectly…

I was trying to think of a family friendly metal song.
This has always been a song that I’ve used to get pumped up a bit. Nice little chug riff that I’m sure would work well along the lines of getting the fans pumped too. I know I heard Dimmu Borgir while watching a Penguins game one time; I couldn’t believe it.
The beginning of this song sounds like
so much white noise to me

To keep in line with your suggestion
Can THIS be our PK music? Or can we switch them around based on mood and prior performance? No one will get it of course.

You're being kind to Montador
He’s been pretty awful in the limited time on the ice I’ve been able to see him. Hands of stone and biting on simple fakes. He better clean that shit right up.
Chicagoan in the Lou.
It may be due to switching partners a lot
but he’s also shown nearly zero anticipation for his partner to reverse the puck and seems constantly out of position to accept such a pass.
Then again, John Scott is a big uncoordinated ape, so there’s that to consider.

Finally
Some honesty.
He’s been choking hard in the preseason. Imagine how much harder of a time he’ll have come regular season. He screws up more often than not. To those that equate him to Sopel…Soaps is ten times better.
Can we really judge him on these few games though?

Maybe
But during my fantasy draft today, I talked to a Buffalo fan. He said more often than not, Monty will make you regret having him on your team. He’s a decent player, but he tends to have a lot of defensive lapses. I don’t have much confidence in him after the conversation we had.
GVT numbers
Montador’s GVT number last year was 8.0.
Sopel’s GVT number last year was 1.4.
Keith’s GVT was 8.0. Chara’s was 7.8. Montador had a REALLY nice season last year and you are going to blow that all up on a couple of preseason games? Seriously?
That’s a lot of hyperbole crammed into such succinct comment.

No thank you
If I wanted to hear bad music, I’d hang out with my Red Wings fan/friend. Don’t need to bring that to Chicago.
about as fast as Paul Konerko going first-to-third while on a fistful of ludes...
Good one!
Take us to the Silver Chalice!
Now finally that the preseason is over...
We can focus on doing the real thing this week! I can’t wait. How will the lines workout? Will Smith be for sure good to go? How long is Kane going to be at Center? How will the D pairings be, will you do Keith and Leddy Still on same pairing? (even though leddy has been better on D)
Lots of Questions but hopefully we can get some answers with the games about to matter.
October 7th, can't get here soon enough...

We reached the end of a poor preseason for the Hawks. At least Kruger has been sent to Rockford..but Pirri also !! This is shocking since he was often our best player on the ice. Our new D-men continue to be unimpressive and unless Crow stands on his head in net like last season we aren’t making the playoffs.
I am not as enthused about this team’s chances as I was a couple weeks ago .. slag ..
we aren’t making the playoffs.
This is extreme pessimism. Even if Montador sucks as much shit as everyone thinks and Lepisto is a hazard in our own end, our team is still really really fucking good.

I hope you’re right. I see plenty of potential but lots to be concerned with and the lack of a decent backup for Crow may hurt us down the road.
Hopefully once the games count this weekend, things look better.
I still am stressed about sending Pirri to Rockford, but am glad to see Saad get his chance.
.. slag ..
Not sure if it showed up on TV
but Olesz had a truly Kopeckian shift in this game. I was at the game, and in one shift he:
-had a nice turn around shot after a linemate stole the puck on the forecheck
-tripped over the Caps’ net while skating behind it
-took about 10 seconds to get up
-lollygagged back to the ’hawks end, allowing the Caps to set up the cycle easily
-blocked a shot, and then took a hooking penalty in the resulting cycle
I thought Lepisto continued to look horrible defensively, and Olsen is clearly not ready.
Hossa was Hossing people all game long. Pirri and surprisingly Carcillo looked good. Big Hayes knows exactly what he wants to do, but I’m not sure he can do it at the NHL level yet.
