Triple Fast Action - Hawks 3, Avs 1
Were this last year's team, that late penalty by Seabrook would have been an absolute death sentence. But this doesn't appear to be your emo, bad hair-cutted, younger brother's Blackhawks. In a back and forth game, the Hawks found a way to gut out a win on the road against the hottest team in the league, with timely goals from the names that matter.
With both Corey Crawford and Semyon Varlamov putting on a clinic, it appeared that Toews' first period marker might end up being enough, but a fluke bounce off Ryan O'Byrne's stick/fist finally solved Crawford to knot it up. In the midst of both teams trading chances, Patrick Sharp picked his corner short side on Varlamov after Andrew Brunette had a Brouwer-esque gaping net whiff job. And during the aforementioned penalty, Marian Hossa iced it with a shorthanded empty netter. Hawks 3, Avs 1.
Observations
- Pat and Edzo couldn't wait to fall all over themselves to praise the Keith and Leddy pairing, and for good reason. Both mobile defenseman regularly denied entry by the Avs into the offensive zone with active sticks and quick feet. But the Avs game plays right into that pairing's hands. As we've seen against a team like the Bruins, that pair will still struggle with teams that want to dump and chase, particularly into Leddy's corner. But if these two game help to get Duncs back on track, I'll certainly take it, even if I still disagree with the fundamental composition of that pairing.
- What better way to gum up the league's best power play than to only give them two opportunities, both on kinda iffy calls. But the Hawks PK is turning out to be nails so far this year, with Crawford anchoring the unit, seeing everything that isn't cut off by the men in front of him. For those keeping score at home, even though it was an empty netter, Hossa's shorty now gives the Hawks 2 short handed goals for and only one power play goal against. And if I'm being offered my choice (and the Hawks braintrust never gives it to me), I'd much rather have a dominant PK over the power play, even if the power play is fucking clown shoes (which it is).
- The Hawks got porked at the dot tonight, 31 to 23. Tighten that up at home, which they should be able to, and that will drastically limit the Avs chances.
- Any time the Hawks walk away with 4 points with Patrick Kane held off the score sheet entirely is two wins everyone will take. And with the way he's playing this year, look for him to come out on Saturday with his dick swinging.
- What a game from both Crawford and Varly. While Varlamov gave up a lot more second chances, he made a few spectacular saves, specifically on Seabrook, Frolik, and most criminal of all on Marcus Kruger. The Plan All Along must think at this point he's never going to dent the twine in the show after that. But Crawford limited rebounds, and made the saves he needed to. So this is what a #1 goalie looks like.
- Best game of the year from 10-19-15 so far. Brunette still can't move at all in transition, but he's still a tremendous asset below the rings shaking d-men and making smart passes. And tonight the Avs were more than happy to concede anything below the goal line, which proved to be their undoing.
- I know he only had an assist, and I shouldn't bash a kid for having a sincerely joyous reaction to a goal, but Matt Duchene's ear to ear grin irritates me. And the unfortunate thing for me and the rest of the western conference is that it's not going anywhere for a long, long time.
- I think Kyle Quincey just got another shot through from the blue line.
Player of the Game
For the first time this year, we're proud to bestow this honor on the Hawks' very own Mouseketeer, Corey Crawford. Thirty-one saves on 32 shots in a one goal game will get you that.

I don't think anyone will disagree with this, though:
most criminal of all on Marcus Kruger
I was actually up off of the couch, hands on the way up, and yelling about the goal, when I realized that I never saw the net move.
Criminal works beautifully for that one. Holy mother of all things that are holy, that save was quite amazing.
When I realized it had been saved, I actually just sat down, but couldn’t curse or be mad, or anything like that. There was nothing all to say but “Varlamov, THAT save was a beauty.”
Smooth. (on rare occasions)
And with all of that said, Bruce Boudreau didn’t think guy could anchor a team to a Stanley Cup last year.

In addition to being frequently injured
Varlamov was very inconsistent for the Caps – he’d have stretches where he played like he has so far this season, and he’d have stretches where the Caps would have been better off with Vesa Toskala in net.

Maybe, just once, someone will call me 'Sir' without adding, 'You're making a scene."
It looked bleak in the second. without some big savesColarado comes out withat least two more goals...
But the third period was decidedly in our favor. What a pleasant turnaround from last years third period meltdowns.
Kruger may have recurring nightmares of Varlamov’s highway robbery – sick.
chances galore for both teams.
Nice wrap Mc.
Third periods have been looking better this season thus far

With the exception of Saturday's game against Boston
the ’Hawks have looked really solid in the 3rd. Unlike this time last year, they come out in the 3rd looking like they actually want to play hockey

our first goal
was a masterclass in sustaining offensive-zone pressure while executing a line change. After a great possession shift by the Kane line, Hossa went off and was replaced by Brunette, who came on and joined the cycle like a replacement cog in a machine. Then Kane went off while Carcillo had control of the puck behind the Avs net, and Toews steamrolled his way to the slot, and the rest was just some happy ink on the scoresheet. Fucking fantastic.

And I believe it was Leddy
who came down low to hold the puck during the line change so the Hawks wouldn’t lose possession.
Just before Toews scored
my wife queried as to whether Q was already using the line generator as she noticed Brunette out with Carcillo & Kane, then she saw Toews flash into the picture. I had barely gotten the words out explaining that it was just a beautiful example of sustaining puck possession and offensive zone pressure while being able to cycle fresh players onto the ice when Johnny puts an exclamation point on it by schooling Varlamov.
It was a thing of beauty!

I don't mind the "tough" reputation at all
what pisses me off is the idea in Hollywood that Chicago architecture is generic enough that they can film in Chicago and then try to pass it off as being another city. Like in the 3rd Transformers movie – in at least 75% of the scenes that were supposed to be set in DC were CLEARLY filmed in Chicago.

That doesn't bother me quite as much
because Gotham, although based on New York, is a fictional city. Same with how I’ve heard they’ll be doing a lot of filming for the new Superman movie in Chicago, and Metropolis is also supposed to be based on New York. I look at that as more of a “ha ha fuck you New York, Chicago’s the place to be” whereas when they try to pass of Chicago as a different REAL city like DC that pisses me off.

Of all the people I've talked with, the women seem most excited by the Carcillo signing.
My sister calls him the Jokim Noah of the Blackhawks. I think he’s awesome. Literally nothing you can complain about him for so far…
I hate you
Don't look now but the Hawks may be playing well.
We all seemed to have our doubts about the line combinations, and it IS still early, but Kane and Hossa look great together and the Bolland line looks like they’ve been playing together since they were Mites. Keith is showing signs of being Keith again, and Crow is, well, playing like a number one goaltender. Throw in Carcillo showing some actual skills and Mayers being solid out there, and this team is looking pretty good.
Now if we could just get rid of the whole Scott-on-the-ice-during-games thing, I’d really feel confident about this team. Whatever, they’re fun to watch again.
Thank you Boston for saving us from a dreadful summer! Now, GO HAWKS!!!
I'd like to throw in the 3rd line d pairing
that has been solid and with them eating up more minutes it really has benefited from overworking Keith. I like this

I had my doubts about that move initially
since I live in DC and have seen Varlamov go from the future of Caps goaltending to an also-ran over the last few years, and I still have some doubts considering how much they gave up to acquire a guy who likely would have been relegated to the KHL this year were it not for that trade, but right now he’s paying massive dividends for that team. If he can stay healthy Colorado has a legitimate starting goalie for the first time since Roy retired.

They pulled the trigger too fast on that one
Craig’ll bounce back. And 71 games in 09/10 with a 91.7 SV% and a 2.63 GAA isnt 1/2 of a good season, that’s a really solid full season. His stats the second part of last year with Ottawa look pretty solid as well.
And don’t even get me started on David Aebischer

Yeah
After he got traded to Ottowa in those 18 games last season he had a .939 SV and a 2.05 GAA in 18 games, that’s not bad. He’s off to a shitty start in the 6 games this year but it’s still Ottowa playing in front of him.
Losing your starting job to Budaj

Sometimes you just get that feeling when something’s bound to happen. Unlike last year, it was a good feeling. Sure enough, Shooter comes through.
Wait, we gotta go through this madness again on Saturday?!?!
I know right
but I’m encouraged by a couple things. 1) no mile high air and the Hawks were built to skate all day so if they want to go up and down the ice at the UC I like our chances. 2) Crawford was excellent technically while Varlamov had to be spectacular to keep this close. 3) By the 3rd period it was the Hawks applying all the pressure, they were the team with the staying power. 4) All the advantages that come with home ice, anthem, our fans, last change, face off, etc.
Still, should be a fun game to watch though, like this one was. And the Hawks are going to have to play well to win.
Yeah, it's still early......

Quick Observations through 6 Games
1. The PowerKill is doing great. Any time you have a positive goal difference when on the PK is good, this will not last, but Fuck it is not bad for now!
2. Kaner is in full Lazy Fuck You mode, holding his own at the dot for the most part and just creates all sorts of havak for the opposition D in the Zone by just being in 2-3 places at once.
3. Panda looks like he is good at this Ice Hockey stuff
4. CRAWFORD, If this is how he is, let us now lay to rest any discussions about a “sophomore slump”!
5. New guys to the roster are not a liability, but seem to be doing just about what was asked of them, which is good!
6. The Rat Pack, not really effective last night, but they ARE NOW a third line that teams cannot just go ho-hum about, they will eat you for breakfast (I am not sure if that is literal or not) if teams do not play like they will rip out your soul!
7. Scott has only 9 min Ice time in 6 games (2 played), this is way to high of an average!
8. The top two lines, still not clicking at 100% which must be scary for other teams, since they can dominate the play!
9. Fucking Clown Shoes! How the Fuck with the talent on this team, can they control the flow of the game and zone at EV, but on the advantage not cleanly gain the zone?
10. Did I mention Crawford is fucking awesome!

It was a frequent term used two years ago
when the power play sucked but the PK would generate shorties. This was best personified against Nashville in the playoffs with Hossa in the box, but also in the Sharks game the night before Thanksgiving and really all season long that year.
I remember a Sharks game that year where we scored like three shorties.
The other team was seriously starting to contemplate whether it was possible to decline a penalty in hockey.

This is why I predicted Keith would lead the team in Plus/Minus this year
And I think it’ll be by a fairly wide margin.
2-8 is gonna give up some goals, but they’ll score at a high rate. 4-7 has been beyond awesome, but playing a shutdown role doesn’t help, or often show up in, the Plus/Minus column due to the low rate of goals for/against.

This is interesting
I’ll be interested to see how it plays out. Both Seabs and Hammer do a good job of keeping the puck in at the blue line, so they’ll do their fair share of at least contributing to the offense, even if it doesn’t come from a lot of shots taken from the blue line. Neither of them are going to jump in on the rush the way both Leddy and Keith are capable of but they’re also unlikely to give up odd man rushes the other way.
It really wouldn’t surprise me if Seabrook finished with a better +/- than Keith.
I'm thinking Keith +25-30, Seabs +10

I just needed to say
here that I think Hammer has been outstanding so far this season (at least relative to last year). He looks a whole lot more like the D-man that played in the Stanley Cup finals two years ago that the one that regressed last season.
"Every player should be accorded the privilege of at least one season with the Chicago Cubs. That's baseball as it should be played - in God's own sunshine. And that's really living." -- Alvin Dark
I can't argue with this.
He had some HUGE plays last night.
Absolutely huge… Least of which was the “gonna be a” goal that he kicked out, away from the empty side of the net, late in the game.
Smooth. (on rare occasions)
I'd really have to look into this more
But I seem to remember that Toews and Bolland have similar +/- when you balance it for games played. I would think if that continued to be true, that Keith and Seabrook would probably end up with more similar +/- with the difference being opportunities with the 2nd line and 4th line balance.
I guess in my head +/- always seems to normalize along lines. So Keith might be higher than Toews, but to significantly distance himself would require some odd circumstances. Similar for Seabrook/Bolland.
It’ll be interesting to see.
Normalized for PDO, Toews' would be much higher than Bolland's
but on the other hand, Bolland’s line should have a higher Sh% since many of their goals are of the opportunistic/break away variety.
My reason is based on 1) Toews will have games where he’s matched against higher than normal competition, especially if Bolland ever goes down (knock on wood) , so that won’t help his Plus/Minus. Kinda like what happened against VAN in the playoffs.
That won’t happen to Keith unless Q puts the band (2-7) back together. And I think we have a higher chance of seeing Keith paired with Monty or Lepisto than Q breaking up 4-7. With Campbell gone, Q HAS to free up Keith to play against weaker competition.
2) With Kane on the 2nd line, Toews’ scoring might take a small hit 5on5 this year. Plus, that 2nd line is going to get the bum slayer zone starts and competition.
3) And it’s also just a numbers game. An offensive lineup is going to score and give up goals at a higher rate than a defensive one. So even if 4-7 are on the ice for 35 goals but only give up 25, they’re a +10. If 2-8 are out there for a similar percentage but higher rate (for example 70 goals for – 50 goals against), they’re a +20. It’ll be tough for Seabs to compete. But that’s part of why I’m not a fan of Plus/Minus.

Too soon?
The Hawks have an 80.4% chance to make the playoffs. Let the scoreboard watching begin again.
hey laaarmer
the Hawks are on track for a 123 point season. Oh man, wouldn’t the President’s Trophy be sweeeeeet!

Did I hear Konroyd say that our Toews line has...
…been our best line this year in the post-game show?
Did anyone else hear this?

I didn't hear it
If he did say, I don’t think its true to be honest

I don't think it's true either
Konroyd has to know more hockey than I do, being an ex-player, but I didn’t know where he was going with that.

McClure!! I know that wasn't easy. Baby steps...
I was totally expecting the “but” though. Heh.
You are correct. I also think that pairing will struggle against some teams and that’s why I’ve stated I’d like to see something like 2-7, 4-5, 6-8 or even 6-20 against those types of teams, especially on the road.
Q loves to stick with the hot lineup, so he’ll have to see a meltdown to make that change.

I was actually feeling bad for McClure there.
Just breathe Matt, you can do it. It will get better.
Also was thinking we should make a courtesy call for John FF. Just in case he had a seizure or something…

Carcillo is so awesome
that Kane and Hossa refuse to pass to him and he gave the puck to the other team under most circumstances with the exception of the Toews goal (which was a dirty finish).
The one shift where literally every player on the Hawks had the puck twice with the exception of CarBomb further illustrates that point.
If they put a real hockey player on that line it would be the best in the NHL with out a doubt instead of just being real kick ass like it is now.
Would not mind seeing Smith/Morin/Sharp/Bickell/Frolik/Stals maybe in no particular order on that line just to see what happens.
Fuck the power play. In the face. It is so bad. So so so so very bad. I don’t even know how that is possible with Kane Keith Toews and Sharp all on the ice at the same time. At least the PK is in order.
This seems like gratuitous Carcillo bashing.
I personally am glad they trust Carcillo up there. This allows the Hawks to keep their dominant 3rd line in place, which you would blow up.
Smith isn’t here and neither is Morin. Frolik and Bickell are off limits and Stalberg has been given chances and never failed to disappoint.

Carbomb
has been pleasant surprise so far. Can’t remember who said it but I heard someone say we might have to adjust the moniker to SmartBomb if he keeps playing the way he has started.

I've said since day 1 of the Carcillo era,
and I will continue to say it, until he proves me wrong.
Dan Carcillo has a legitimate amount of NHL caliber hockey skill.
He was asked (especially/primarily in Philadelphia) to simply go out there, kill guys, and rack up PIMs, and not to worry about playing hockey.
He’s a great team kinda guy, and has shown plenty of flash around the net (particularly while in PHX) and ability to cycle in the zone, and decent vision on the ice. He’s shown to be responsible enough in both ends of the ice.
The biggest problem with Dan Carcillo is that his reputation precedes him. His reputation was essentially built in Philadelphia. A city in which it is “cool” to throw batteries at Santa Claus.
Keith Stone.
