Atop The Sugar Pile - 10/27

Oh hey... remember when we used to write these on a (semi) weekly basis? Well we've seen 8 hockey games with 3 more coming up quickly and we're too lazy to think of a new idea for a weekly roundup. With Halloween right around the corner, lets all dive head first into a whole pile of high fructose corn syrup and other things that will most certainly kill us all, shall we?
The Terrifying Lows
Rostislav Olesz - This guy has played so little that I'm still not 100% sure how to pronounce his name. Although listening to a half in the bag Foley try and stumble through it might not help me much either. It's not quite far to put him in this category and it's not exactly about his play so much as it is about his place on this team. I don't expect him to crack the line-up any time soon and that $3Million+ cap is pretty painful for a constant healthy scratch.
The Dizzying Highs
He's Marian Hossa... You're Not - We were expecting a strong start from Hoss and he certainly hasn't disappointed us so far. His 5 goals lead the Hawks and he's on pace for a point a game. Beyond that he's playing the strong physical game we've seen in the past and always seems to be right in the thick of things no matter which zone. He's also fourth on the team in hits, did you know that? I doubt he can keep up this pace for a full season but it'll still be pretty damn fun to watch
The Experiment - I was concerned about moving Patrick Kane to center, how could you not be? He's one of the most skilled players in the league, this we know. But would it be a good idea to take one of the most dangerous wingers and put him in an uncomfortable position and give him the extra responsibilities that generally come with playing in the middle? Well, with 2 goals, 6 assists, a +4 and a 56% winning percentage at the draw it certainly seems Q hit the jackpot. Kane has been in "Fuck You" mode all season so far and it doesn't show signs of slowing just yet.
A Whole Lot Else - I didn't want to ramble on in this section but there is a lot to like so far in these 8 games. Carbomb looks to actually have his head on straight and is a great addition to the two players mentioned above, Jonathan Toews is still a monster, Patrick Sharp is back as a sniper and a point per game and Brent Seabrook is destroying worlds with only a stare.
The Creamy Middles
D2K - He caused a little concern at the start of the season but it appears that Duncs is on his way back to the top of his game. Things haven't been perfect but his last few games have been solid performances, even if the pairings don't still make sense. I expect Keith to make to highs section before too long.
Andrew Brunette - Brunette is at the bottom of the pack with a -2 rating but he does have 4 points too. A 40 point season would be nice from many players but it would also be Brunette's lowest production since 1998. The Brunette signing makes sense for many reasons but there are a lot of questions if the slow skater can keep up with the fast pace of the Hawks.

Good stuff
How about a little Nick Leddy love?
I’m starting to have long thoughts about Brunette. He does some nice things, but, he is sooo slow, he’s definitely a defensive liability, unlike Quenneville’s preferred “two way” guys (Toews, Bolland, Hossa, Sharp, Kane, Frolik, Bickell.)
Still rather have Brunette for $2 mildo than Brouwer for $2.5 or, heaven forfend, Kopecky for $3 million, but there appear to be two spots in the top-6 there for the taking still.
Although neither one may need to be a center, on accounta the Devli Child looking to make another huge stride in his game this year (just like two years ago.) I’ve always considered Kaner a full notch below Toews, and it doesn’t hurt having Hossa on your wing (doesn’t hurt Hossa either having Kane as his center), but that little fucker may change my mind this year.
We like our people!
agreed on Kaner
i was wary at the start too but he has shown to be more than capable with room to grow. this will help immensely as we can pick up a top 6 wing if need be at the deadline. if we can move olesz while doing this, phenomenal!

I suppose I get all this wishing for another top 6 forward
but jeez, folks, these guys don’t grow on trees. Most teams would be thrilled to have 2 top-6 type guys; we have 5 (actually, we have 6, but 3-6 serves our needs so much better where he’s at — he’d be anchoring the 2nd line pretty much anywhere else in the league).
An opinion should be the result of thought, not a substitute for it. (Jef Mallett)
it's also worth mentioning...
that we have a ton of potential replacements on the top 6 in the coming months/year (Pirri, Morin, Saad and even Beach seems to have screwed his brain on semi-straight)
I think Morin's on the way here
as long as he proves he’s not suffering any more aftereffects from his concussion, the kid is going to make an appearance, sooner rather than later (I hope).
well
the cap space is there, unlike last year, when the discussion was moot.
The Hawks are definitely contenders this year, but I’d put several teams ahead of them right now. Overall, I don’t see the current roster as obviously better than last year- deeper and more balanced, but minus Brian Campbell’s skill.
Two years ago, the Hawks were favorites or near-favorites all season long, and rightfully so. I wasn’t around in 1961, but the 2009-10 team, IMO, was pretty clearly the best Hawks team in my lifetime. It was a lot of fun. Remember?
Of course, top-6 forwards don’t grow on trees. If they did, they wouldn’t be so expensive. But it is hardly far-fetched to hope for something like this. The Hawks are an attractive destination for someone who wants to win a Cup, and one more top-6 forward puts them right back in the “near favorite/favorite” camp, IMO.
Considering what the move would mean in terms of expected $ due to higher probability of advancing deep in the playoffs, the move is a financial no-brainer if the Hawks can find the right guy. If they end the season with $2+ million in unused cap space, I would think Hawk management would view this as a financial failure. So, it’s not just “nice to have” daydreaming- Stan has to look at this as prolly his #1 priority.

we were looking at the Free Agents etc and not seeing much but look at the Booth move.. who saw that coming? Picking up someone in that (or above) wage bracket would be a great thing for this team..

I for one don’t think the Booth move makes Vancouver better. They get a bit more grit, but they lose something on the PP and get a guy who is a potential liability on defense. It’s not like they needed more lazy forwards on that roster either. If anything, it increases Kesler’s responsibilities on defense, which hopefully hurts his O game.
All this talk about another forward (which I complete agree is needed)
A couple of thoughts to add:
I have a feeling that if Stan can make a move well in advance of the trade deadline, he will. I doubt having “this much” cap space was part of the plan. $3M in cap space “now” gets you about a $10M player prorated at the deadline. I doubt those players are lying around, and anyways, it would cost a fortune in prospects for that rental. So even for a “realistically high end” player at the deadline, the Hawks only need about half the cap space they currently have.
But if Stan pulls the trigger early, again due to proration, only a mid-range “role player” would likely be in the cards. Though maybe with the right pieces going both ways, it could be something more than just a rental player.
IMO, they should also save some space for another 5-6 d-man. If one of the defensemen went down, even if were someone like OD, they’re only one player away from depending on Scott as the 6th man. Cheap defensemen are usually available at the deadline and it would make sense for the Hawks to grab one. Scott would somehow be gone (trade or waived) at that point and with the expanded playoff roster, carrying 8 d-men wouldn’t be an issue.

I think I would disagree
with your roster isn’t better statement. Soup was great – and I liked his game and what he did inhelping get a cup here – but man for man the defensemen are better than what we put on the ice. I am not sure I like the Leddy/Keith combination but it keeps getting better, Keith is far better so far this year than last. Leddy is a keeper.
The forward lines are improved as well. Frolick is a huge upgrade and Carbomb has been amazingly good – I am shocked to even type that. Brunette is a legitimate concern – I am worried that his speed is too big of a liability. Good guy, plays hard, but speed just is, and he isn’t.
I think the roster overall is both deeper and better witha better goalie combo to boot. They are first in goal differential in the West, and also number one in GPG as well.
As the defense settles in I expect even better numbers there. They are the favorite out of the West IMHO. Of course, one big injury to the wrong guy and forget about that.
I'm Lloyd Pettit's love child!
Of course, one big injury to the wrong guy and forget about that.
This got me to thinking. If, God forbid, one or both of our top guys went down for an extended period (I won’t name names for fear of a jinx but you all know who I mean) I think we all realize that just making the playoffs would probably be a struggle.
Yet I see those damn Penguins sitting atop the league, and still without Crosby and Malkin, and I have to wonder how they’re doing it. Is it coaching, their system, organizational depth, a combination of all three plus other factors? I just can’t figure it out.
I look at their roster and it doesn’t seem that much superior to ours in terms of overall talent. Yet if our top guys suddenly disappeared from the team for a long period I just can’t see us still battling for the top spot in the conference.
Any theories or thoughts out there? Because I just don’t get it.

i get that we are spoiled
by the talent we have in our top 6. with the rise of kane at c, wing is the only obvious position to upgrade. i suppose we could add a D man but we have plenty of those. if injuries hit, i could see a center or D being added.. let’s hope that doesn’t happen. if we are healthy at the trade deadline, it only makes sense to add another winger.

Only thing I would complain about would be the PP. That and the fact we haven’t been tested against the elite teams in the league just yet. But we are beating the bad teams this year, that’s something we were next to awful at last season.

While our team last year was certainly less skilled than this year
I definitely noticed a propensity for last year’s team to play down to our opponents…cup hangover, team chemistry, whatever it was, we definitely lacked focus in the games we should have and needed to win.

100% correct
we weren’t knocking over the “easy” ones which made, for instance, that game against the Bruins, when we were knackered from (if I remember rightly) a back-to-back with Scum, so vitally important near the end of last season.. we should have been stomping into those games with “We’re The Fucking Champions… And You’re Not” tattooed on our foreheads.. and, for various reasons we didn’t..

I'd like to point out that a couple of sad "bad teams"
aren’t exactly playing so poorly right now. The Avs and the Stars, against whom the ‘Hawks are 2-1-1, are 2 of the hottest teams in the league to start the season and currently sit atop their respective divisions. Will they finish there? Probably not, but point is right now they’re both playing as well as any other team in the league not based in DC and the ’Hawks have taken 5 of a possible 8 points in those 4 games, only losing in regulation once.

I haven't watched an Dallas games since the 'Hawks started the season with 2 against them

plus they're not getting hosed at the end of games
cannot count the number of times they lost games at the back end of the 3rd period last year, it was an epidemic of break – downs, and it started early and lasted for the duration. Already they’ve been clamping down (except for the Ducks game) well near the end and giving themselves opportunities to win close or tie games in regulation. I think this bodes well as we go into the long marathon still to come.

Not so sure the Elite are Elite anymore
The Stars and Av’s are both at the top pf the heap in the West, and yes, I realize it’s early but though are both playing solid hockey. We have beaten both and obviously lost the opener at Dallas.
The Canucks, and Sharks are off to slow starts, Detroit has stumbled a bit but I giess we all know how those stories usually turn out at the end.
I wouldn't call what Detroit did stumbling
They won 5 in a row then lost 2 starting their backup in both games. From what I heard, Howard had a kid and has been with the wife for the past few days. They win their next game and they move ahead of us.
Avs and Stars won’t keep this up long. Especially the Stars. Lehtonen will fall back down to earth soon. The Avs should make the playoffs but I see them more as a 6-8 seed. San Jose and Vancouver will both be back up there sooner than later.
last season...
Dallas started 16-8-1; Colorado began 19-10-4
Can we add the PP to the Terrifying Lows?
Right now we’re converting at something like 13% per PP opportunity. Even more mind boggling, our 5×5 shot percentage is about 9.7%, while our 5×4 shot percentage is about 8.8%. Right now it would be statistically logical for Q to beg the refs to let him decline PP chances.
Speaking of statistically unsustainable, right now we have exactly 50% as many SH goals as PP goals. Now if we could keep that ratio when the PP stops actively blowing goats, it’s going to be a very good season.

Agreed
Great article, and a sign that Shanahan has legitimacy in the eyes of the players despite some of the grumbling we’ve heard.
It makes sense to me that players would by and large welcome this anyway. It’s like we saw with steroids in baseball. Obviously head shots aren’t directly analogous to steroids, but it makes sense that where player health and the image of the game are an issue, the majority of players will welcome efforts to do something about it.
it _is_ a great article..
and refreshing to see the Pro’s view.. I especially like the way he doesn’t sweat legislating against the “dishonourouble 1-2%”.. and his ideas about players looking out for each other out of mutual respect.

Went to Harvard, specifically called out Kronwall. Moore wouldn’t have pulled that name among the many big hitters, right? He only played for a tiny bit in the Western Conference, while Adams would have a lot of familiarity with Kronwall based on his time with the ’Hawks.

Maybe, just once, someone will call me 'Sir' without adding, 'You're making a scene."
My guess is that it's someone on Scum.
He kind of defends Smith’s hit on Smith. Refers to Shanahan as “Shanny”. Then writes “If I was playing against the Detroit Red Wings,” There’s something about the use of “If I was” in this line. “If I am” would seem more appropriate.
If I was going to guess the player I’d go with Bertuzzi only because he’s the last person that should be talking about head shots.
Maybe, just once, someone will call me 'Sir' without adding, 'You're making a scene."

Vancouver currently out of a playoff spot despite more games played than anyone else in the West. Still early of course, but as we saw last year, those early holes can be a bitch to crawl out of when your GP column is higher than everyone else.

On the list of things to get bothered about, Olesz rusting (see what I did there?) away in the press box is very low. So they’re paying him a lot not to play – big deal. It’s the price we pay for cap flexibility.
There are few things less obviously fallacious than the idea that the guy with the big paycheck “has to play.” Not that you’re saying that here, of course, but it’s a popular canard and it only leads to trouble.

Think of it this way
I’m sure El Duque will correct me if my Cap math is wack, but due to the way salaries pro-rate in trades and how salary cap room is banked daily, every day that Rusty is here and not contributing, the dent in the overall salary that the Hawks can take on at or near the deadline to help them in what we all hope is a deep playoff run is multiplicative.
The deadline occurs with 40 days left of the 185 that the NHL designates for the season. Rusty makes just a hair under $17K daily. We are 22 days deep in the season. So if he were waived/demoted today, that would be 123 days of banking $17K a day, or an additional $2.09 million in cap space. So that becomes $52K a day more the Hawks can spend from the deadline on, or about $9.6 million in full 185 day contract annual salary. That number decreases and has Rusty doing more harm than good to the long term goals and potential of this team every day he’s here and not dressed.

They had to take on his bad deal
to get campbell’s cap hit off the books.
There was some talk around the hawks blogosphere that Bowman “targeted” Olesz, and thought he could be a piece here, but I’m not sure how anyone could still hold that opinion based on how the situation has played out.

purely speculation here
but I’m guessing that this was the thought process, from bowman’s point of view.
Alright, I’ll take on Olesz. He has first round pedigree, and maybe if he can stay healthy, a change of scenery might turn things around for him. We’ll give him a look during camp and see what he does with the playing time Q gives him.
Now that we’ve passed all that, he shouldn’t be here if he’s not going to play. This is why we’re all confused.

teams are pretty much familiar with who’s who. Frankly, with the Hawks sitting him, it telegraphs the signal that he’s available. There’s probably a GM or two out there who thinks Olesz would be a good deal at $3M (and I wouldn’t be surprised if Stan knew who that hypothetical GM is). Certainly there’s some risk here, but I’m willing to give Stan the benefit of the doubt for a bit. He’s earned a little slack for his off-season work.

I thought it was just re-entry waivers where if a player was claimed his original team was still responsible for half of his cap hit and salary? Or is it both waivers and re-entry waivers? Someone with better knowledge of the CBA needs to weigh in on this

while I agree with you...
exactly how much salary space do we actually want or need at the trade deadline? If our roster stays as is, the Hawks will have enough to bring in $10+ million in contracts at the deadline.
but
if the benefit of keeping Rusty is close to zero, the benefit of additional cap space, even if modest, would be worthwhile.

yeah, i don’t know what’s going on with him but I see very few scenarios where sending him down actually makes a lot of sense. Perhaps if you bring up a guy you know doesn’t have a long-term future on Hawks it makes sense (Klink?). the 9.6 mil
is a total that assumes rusty is waived today
Based on McClure’s numbers, that figure is 7.5 mil if Rusty stays on the roster.
Second City Hockey
I'm Abe Froman, and I approve this message.
It's actually $13.8 million if they hang onto Rusty
Cap Geek on 2/27, 145 days into the year, and the roster stays as is (for the most part)
Banked cap space to date (on 2/27, on day 145)
$2,994,294
2,994,294 / 40=$74,857 per day extra to spend in daily salary from the deadline on.
$74,857 * 185 (full season)= $13,848,609 full season equivalent in salary the Hawks can take on.
Second City Hockey
It's a bird, it's a plane, it's a goddamn shame
Therefore no need to waive Rusty
In no universe are the Hawks going to move so little salary out and bring that much salary in. Even if it’s for rentals, the cost in prospects/players to bring in anything over about half of that is way too high. We’re tilting at windmills here IMO.
Whether Rusty stays or goes isn’t an issue as far as the salary cap goes. Now whether or not waiving him makes room for someone who can break the lineup is a different question…

If the Hawks can keep up to that level of playing, a 100-point season, along with a top-seed playoff position, becomes a realistic prospect. Yes, there are a few glitches, but everything finally comes into place. Seriously, I haven’t felt this good about the Hawks in a long time.
Is it possible that
Olesz is any worse than Stalberg? I like Vik and want him to put it all together but since he’s been here, he’s been a whole lot of meh. At this point we know what we have in Vik, I wouldn’t mind seeing Q give Olesz a few starts in his place.
Stals has more upside than Olesz at this point.
I get that Olesz hasn’t had many opportunities, but he hasn’t made the most of what he has had. Stals has shown some fire this year and Q is rewarding him for that. Olesz is more of a wait and see at this point. No reason for Q to change what isn’t broken.

I'm worried that we are too reliant on Crawford.
In the championship year it seemed like the Blackhawks always had the puck, leading to questions about whether Niemi was really that good. I haven’t heard those questions about Crawford, because he has had to stop more shots per game than Niemi did. If he falters, could the team go through a slump?
They are still playing like a top team, but in the championship year they played like the clear favorite. It’s still much, much better than last year, though.

so they chose to go with the DiPietro. I don’t have stats to back it up but I feel like DiPietro actually does really well in shootouts. Let the Malkin one in tonight (only one) but he almost had it – maybe if he had time to actually stretch prior

So for real
How in the shit will Edmonton keep all these young players?
Hall, Eberle, Nugent-Hopkins, Paajarvi, Gagner…
By staying crappy and replacing them with future top-5 picks?

Pretty easily I believe
Smyth and Hemsky are UFA’s after this season. Trade Smyth at the deadline for a prospect and low/mid priced player. Try to get a bag of eggshells for Hemsky since it’s possible he’ll never be the same, or sign him for a big discount if possible. Trade Cam Barker too or just don’t give him a QO.
Those moves alone free up $12.6M gross.
The $3M on the books this season for the buyouts of Nilsson and Souray drops to $1.5M next year. That’s another $1.5M freed up.
So that’s over $14M available to resign some of their RFA’s and sign 3 new players.
Plus, most of the guys you mentioned are Edmonton’s property until 2015 or 2016. Not too much to worry about yet. They have their share of RFA’s but not all of them are due huge raises either. A couple of big contracts will be expiring then too. And Nugent-Hopkins and Hall are both already making almost $4M/yr. It’s not like they’re gonna resign for THAT much more unless league salaries go through the roof.
But if it does’t work out, I won’t lose any sleep over it.

I absolutely cannot believe they're making that kind of coin
Is that normal for top picks entering the NHL? Seems a bit high but I admit I don’t know what the standard is.
So we're all a little confused about Olesz, right?
How come none of the beat writers/reporters have asked Q about Olesz constantly being a scratch? If they have, what did Q have to say about him?

12 goals in the second period
but that was the time of hyperinflation. it wasn’t bad defense then. it was no defense. tonight was a farce. goofy too. pinball hockey, most of the goals.

I feel bad for him. It’s obvious now that Philly is just a terrible place for goalies. With fans like those, who wouldn’t have mental and emotional damage?
fans haven’t been giving him grief yet. it’s just a lot of pressure with the contract and the Goalie Problem storyline, which has some truth but is also overblown. Defense has not played well, Pronger’s out and the forwards are considerably poorer defensively this year as a result of the roster turnover. And he had a bad game as well, in relief of Bobrovsky.
But he hasn’t gotten the Philly Fan treatment yet. God help him if they turn on him. It will be another soap opera.

weirdest off - season ever for that team
I still have no idea what their master plan was, and their GM’s explanations left me wondering quite a bit more. Sure seemed like “let’s keep Pronger happy even if we have to get rid of some of our best players.”
One view is that it all started with Snider clamoring for the big-name goalie. That forced Holmgren’s hand and drove the price up so he had to get rid of some big names. If you believe the story to that point, he could have done a lot worse with his return for the Richards and Carter trades. But then the whole “leadership/character problem” story comes in and then Speculation becomes the primary occupation in Flyerland. It would be fun to do a Scarlet Letter with Carter and Richards as Hester Prynne twins (maybe wearing Sedin jerseys) and the fanbase as Reverend Dimmesdale.
So the GM’s explanations may have seemed odd because the real one was “The Old Guy made me do it.”
