Ouch, but it did not look like a dirty play at all. This is just one of those plays that goes bad IMO and no matter what rules are made, things like this will still happen from time to time, even if all contact was banned. I would be willing to listen to hearing an alternative to touch icing, but do not want to kill the ability of the offending team (icing team) from being able to out hustle the Defense and gain control either.

Preemptive Palomino, lets talk political stuff elsewhere . Is it October 7th yet?

I always wondered if we removed the trapazoid from there

would this continue to happen if the goalies are able to play the puck outside of that fucking zone?

removing the trapazoid wouldn't do much on icings - but no touch icing is an idea whose time has come

I support the no touch icing ...

not only because it’s safer, but also because the refs get the call wrong when a close “icing prevention” play occurs. So often it’s impossible to spot whose stick touched the puck first that I say just make an easy to apply bright-line rule.

I politely withdraw my snarky comment based on lack of knowledge.

by Billy Charlesbois on Oct 3, 2011 1:14 PM CDT up reply actions

Right there with you, I cant evne count how many times the refs get it wrong the way it is now.

No-Touch Icing and a Bigger Rink would prevent a lot of injuries IMO.

I’m for it despite the subtleties of the ref’s decisions. I’ve always liked watching the race to the puck – it’s a pretty exciting moment. I’d hate to see that completely leave the game.

I'm not going to link this Jahns article

because he says that Scott is still really, really needed on the roster, even with all of the recent additions:

“There will be times when he might be needed, so it looks as if the Hawks are content with keeping eight defensemen when training camp breaks.”

Huh? Why, Stanbow, why?

yes, but the underlying point of that article

my takeaway on the preseason

The thing that impressed me the most was our depth coming out of Rockford. Saad-Pirri-Olsen-Salak-Stanton-Hayes-Freddy-Morin, all looked like they could not only fill in in the case of injury, but contribute. Hell, Danault and McNeil weren’t too bad either. Saad is really going to make management make a hard decision.

we’ll miss Campbell, but overall the defense is deeper. Olsen looked very good on the PP yesterday. Although i think Salak won Turco’s spot, I’d like to see him start in Rockford. It would be nice to see the Hogs start the season squealing like a pigs.

Mayers seeems to be a solid pick up – a John Madden type addition to the team.

Not related, but Semin’s dive more resembled a belly flop than Greg Louganis. He really needs to observe some tape of the Sedins. The worst LeBlanc (Great name for a goalie if you put a k where the c is – work with me) should have got was two minutes for interference. And if the NHL was smart, they install camera’s under the ice so we could officially determine whether the puck crosses the goal line when a fat ass like Neurvirth decides to hatch it.

by wardrums on Oct 3, 2011 8:58 AM CDT reply actions   1 recs

100% congree here

Our organizational depth is awesome. We have a few D-men and a lot of forwards looking to make the NHL in the next few years, to the point that I just don’t know what the hell we’ll do with them all.

Leblanc’s hit…. i think the elbow caught his chin, and some supp. disc. is warranted, just to drive the point home. Something will need to be done about the embellishment though.

And Bick’s goal… if the rule were changed such that some logical reasoning was allowed to be used in the ruling, that would help. Last night, it would go something like “After the play was blown dead, the puck was retrieved from inside the net. Ergo, before the play was blown dead, the puck was INSIDE THE FUCKING NET.”

Hockeenight doesn’t like bicks either. I think he’s gonna prove critics wrong this season.

by oregon_hawk on Oct 3, 2011 9:15 AM CDT up reply actions

I’ve liked Bickells play, especially last few games.

The embellishment needs to be adressed. If that was a playoff game, there is no way Semin goes down. That LeBlanc is a big kid it looked like.

So, like Toews and Kaner for example are great skaters, and puck distributors (both spotty); whereas Smith may not be...

The idea is not to have overlapping skill sets on the ice at the same time, should be more complementary (Hossa plays great defense, Kaner does not; Hossa doesn’t pass like Kaner does, etc.)

Mayers and Carcillo are going to play physical and mix it up.

Stals is going to get caught in a lot of battles he wants no part of with those guys. Stals is just a guy I dont see being a Blackhawk by the playoffs.

I dont know how you can say that.I think Carcillo and Mayers looked really good yesterday.

I don’t think we are using Olesz to his fullest. I dont see him being a bum slayer like Stalz can be.

I think Carcillo, Mayers, and Smith/Stalz will be great. It will open up the ice for any of one of them.

Olesz uses his size well, I like him on top 6, winning board battles and keeping the puck in enemy territory. It gives our top 6 puck possesion.

When I decide to change my personality I will let you know what I become.

You didn't, my point is they just that.

They looked good, and I thought Olesz wasnt that noticeable with them. So put in Stalz with his speed, and I think you have something.

Put in Smith and his nose for the puck, and you have something equally as dangerous for a 4th line.

When I decide to change my personality I will let you know what I become.

Agree.

Related Question. When does Emery get his first action? Winnipeg? Crawford will start the opener and I would assume he would start the home opener as well even though its a back to back.

Winnipeg is second home game of season and 3rd all year but the Hawks have about a 5 day break between games. Or since the first 5 or 6 games are pretty spread out do you wait for Phoenix on the 18th?

I have no clue when Emery gets the first start

Because the schedule early there seems to be a lot of gaps between games. Some of me wants to say not till the 28th or so due to the light schedule and keeping Crow ready. However the realistic part probably thinks about the 15th of the month.

than last year. I counted 11 back to backs — last year I think they had some crazy number like 16. They also ease into the season, again unlike last year which seemed like they played every night for the first 3 months. Only 11 games in October vs 14 for a couple of the other months.

In my opinion thats the best way for Emery to prove himself to the team.

You perform great at an away game, let alone the very first game of the season. If you win, you have the fans support, your teams support, the coach’s trust.

If Niemi had a horrible game that year instead of the shutout. I bet people would have been just as concerned about him as they were Huet.

I don't care about fighting

but I was a little disappointed in the lack of times someone used their body to win the puck/make a play. Then again there’s no point getting hurt in the preseason so I’ve basically decided to put this concern on the back burner.

by Scott13 on Oct 3, 2011 12:30 PM CDT up reply actions

Not a worry at all

the additions by themself will pound other teams at times, count on it – and Bickell is just realizing his physical potential.

by Waylon on Oct 3, 2011 4:00 PM CDT up reply actions

You're hoping Bickell is

“realizing his physical potential.” I don’t think we have seen any evidence yet.

by stanfordron on Oct 3, 2011 4:09 PM CDT up reply actions

Physical play is not

about how many fights one gets into nor how much one stands up for their teammates. It is about taking the defender’s body out of a play rather than trying to poke check a puck away from him. It is about am opposing player with a puck knowing he has to make a quick decision because he is about to get tatooed.

In that respect, it is hard to think Hammer or Bickell are part of that and the jury is certainly still out on Montador. Carcillo, Meyers and O’Donnel are players who will have very limited ice time.

The only continual physical presence (jn the hockey sense of the word – not the WWE definition) is Seabs.

by stanfordron on Oct 3, 2011 12:24 PM CDT reply actions

We need to keep saying it

Hammer can be physical

Remember last year when he got suspended for his hit on Pominville. I think that took a lot out of him, but I saw a couple of decent hits during the preseason and think he will be more physical this season. Montador has never been afraid to use his body along the boards.

People don’t want to lose tens of thousands of dollars, going out for 10 and 20 games for what have been, sometimes, really vicious hits and sometimes questionable calls, in my opinion….”I’m not talking about head shots. I don’t like head shots. I don’t like concussions either. But right now, there’s a lot of pink hats out there. And I don’t wear a pink hat. Just ties."

First, of all, all the suspensions have been for headshots – if that is not what he is talking about, then what the hell is he bringing it up for. Nobody is talking about taking good, clean, hard checks out of the game, so he’s just an asshole with the pink hats comment. And he asked if the Bruins would have won today with the new rules because he liked the way they hit – they didn’t target the head but still played very physically so I don’t see why not. Making headshots illegal in the game does NOT ruin the physicality of the game.

I would give a shit about these comments if they were made by someone who knew something about hockey.

Looks like Ryan Nugent-Hopkins is staying with Oilers

at least for now. Didn’t see him play at all – how ready did he look?

Did anyone do this last season? Did you like it? Dislike it? How was the picture quality?
