24 Hour Revenge Therapy - Hawks 5, Jackets 2
Once again, because it's been long enough since the conclusion of the game, if you wanted a narrative recap of what happened, there are plenty of places you could have found that by now. But you know better than that.
As was noted last night, this game was more difficult than it needed to be, in spite of the score looking how it was supposed to when all was said and done. A lethargic start gave way to what rapidly turned into a one-sided affair in the final frame, even with all the disallowed goals. Hawks 5, Jackets 2, and all was well on a Saturday night.
Observations
- Once again, the Hawks had trouble navigating the neutral zone through the first 40 minutes of play, to the point that Mike Kitchen even pointed it out during his pre-3rd period interview from the bench. Well Kitch, there's a real easy way to solve that problem- split up Keith and Leddy. We've been over it a zillion and a half times, but getting trap-busting, shot-gunning D-men on more than one pair will double the amount of time of the game that there's someone capable of providing exactly what the even the coaches are stating that they need. Yes, Leddy is improving, but that doesn't mean the pair works. I'll keep saying it until it actually happens- Split. Them. Up.
- While we're on the subject of things that we've been over a zillion times, even the Hawks beat contingent, specifically Tim Sassone and Adam Jahns were bemoaning the absence of Optimus Grind, Ben Smith, and how he would look good on Toews' wing. Once again, for those of you who have just discovered Q-Tips: If Ben Smith is in your top six, your team sucks. There's a reason Ben Smith is in Rockford, behind John Scott and Rusty Olesz.
With that said, color me quite pleased when the Hawk's prettiest whipping boy Viktor Stalberg went out in the third and stuffed it up everyone's ass by potting 2, and nearly turning the trick on a breakaway. On Stalberg's first goal, we finally got a chance to see what that speed can do when it's under control. He closed on that loose puck, cut to the middle, and fired a wrister past Allan York in the span of about a quarter of a second. - Ray Emery looked very sharp at times, though Vinny Prospal's goal in the first wasn't one of them. If Razor's two appearances right now are indicative of what he'll provide all season in spelling Crow, then the Hawks should be in decent shape in the cage.
- While the Hawks power play will show another big 0-fer in the box score, and the three goals were disallowed for good reason, hopefully the remixed units gain a little bit of momentum from the chances they were able to create, albeit against an absolutely wretched Jackets PK.
- Glad to see the PK is once again back on the plus side of the ledger.
- Other than the one instance in the second where he needlessly vacated his position in front of the net to chase the puck carrier in behind, Sami Lepisto looked fine for having not played in three weeks. His partner, Steve Montador, looked fine as well, but he still sucks, right? EARN YOUR MONEY.
- John Scott had 1:44 of ice time. If that's what you'd rather have than Rusty Olesz out there, it's incredibly irresponsible of Stan Bowman to keep Olesz on the pro roster. While it more than likely is a matter of Rocky Wirtz not wanting to pay even more money for personnel not even on the roster, every day that Rusty is here and is scratched has a multiplicative effect on the additions the Hawks can make down the line from a salary cap standpoint. He's doing more harm than good sitting in the press box to the Hawks' long-term goals.
- Raise your hand if you noticed $5 million dollar man James Wisniewski other than when he was flopping and diving in his own end when receiving minimal contact in an effort to draw calls. A pretty impressive feat for someone who played more than half the game (30:09 TOI)
- With the Preds, their neckless coach, and their snazzy new threads coming to town tomorrow, it's going to to take a lot better effort than in the previous two games to grab those two points.

missed last night's game..

i guess
i’m happy myself, but i guess it’s a tough fanbase. good win, reasonably one-sided, no Crawford, yes John Scott. whatever.
also, it is a bit awkward when the guy the villagers just collared and were tying to the post (Stalberg) ends up being the hero.
We like our people!
yes, saw that
I was happy for him. I’m pleased with any win, especially as we had a nasty tendency to lose games like this last year.. and like you say, Scott always brings the mood down a little.. and it is also good to hear that Emery was apparently solid, too..

Whoa, whoa, whoa
Ben Smith is worse than Scott? Did I just read that? Smith is in Rockford to develop, not because he’s behind Olesz or Scott on the depth chart. Unlike either of the other two, Smith still has potential for growth. That’s why he’s in Rockford. No way would the top line would look worse with Smith in place of Brunette. I get Brunette has “good hands” (though he’s failed to bury some great chances so far) but his lack of speed is a hindrance to what Toews and whatever other winger is slotted can do.
And if you ever need an example of an outlier, Stals game is a prime example of that. When he can play like that on an even semi-consistent basis I’ll be impressed. Until then he’s just another 4th liner with a nice outing every 15 games or so.
Obviously Smith's better
The point I was making was that if he were such a sure-fire top 6 guy that the Hawks were squandering, Scott wouldn’t be taking ice time away from him.

Scott
shouldn’t be taking ice time away form anyone, as long as we are trying this “logical argument” thing.

But then if Smith’s more a bottom-6 guy, and I think he is, and is well-suited to it, don’t you think Smith in for 4 or 5 minutes is better than Scott for 1:44? Scott quite literally did nothing for the team yesterday. I like the man, and I’m sure his presence in the lockerroom is good for a lot, so if Q is only looking for someone to take 2 shifts when some other forward is out, then what the fuck, dress Scott. But that can’t be what he’s after. Can it?
www.mjt.org
I suppose if he's only going to play
against bottom-feeders like CBJ, it’s a bone they can afford to throw — sort of.
Giving the guy only 1:44 puts undue pressure/minutes on the rest of the forwards; not to mention the OMG feeling if one of the other 11 went down with injury. It turns a pretty sure 2 points into more of the maybe category — and we know a spot in the top 4 in the conference is from beating the teams you are supposed to.
All in all, it’s truly the biggest head-scratcher of the year.
It's on, bitches.

I'm almost certain
that just about anyone on this Board who owns a pair of skates could sneak into the game for a 1:44 and not fuck it up too badly for the Hawks.
Q believes he’s a deterrent. For what, I have no answer other than Q likes to do logarithm puzzles before the game with many of his answer coming up 10 to the power of 32 and instantly believes 32 has the power … and then the game starts and asks Kitchen “What happened to the power of 32?”

I'm almost sure that
Ben Smith is in Rockford because A) he got brained and B) he is exempt from waivers. And C) has a two-way contract.
If this were a meritocracy, Olesz and Stalberg would both be below him on the depth chart, but they can’t be sent down for free.
Smith has 4 points in 5 games for Rockford, fwiw.
His pass
to Stals for his 2nd goal is the exact reason why he’s on this team.

Oh okay
I’ll keep waiting for those while he continues to make the top line less effective in the process.
I really wonder
whos kid Scott has kidnapped to keep getting put on the roster.
Reading the multiple stories about Leddy from the beat writers this week,
I’m wondering whether Scott’s still here in part because he and Leddy are close.
Not saying that’s a valid reason for wasting a roster spot but that’s what I’m thinking. Because I can’t really think of much else.
I get the feeling he's really good for the locker room.
And given the importance that has been placed on a healthy locker room after last season, its the only conclusion I can draw to why he’s still here.
"Showin' her my Toews-face!"
Yeah, his teammates do seem to love the guy.
And I can understand why. He’s smart and funny and he’s willing to go to battle for them. Honestly, his teammates probably care much less (i.e., not at all) about carrying him on the roster and double-shifting to take up his ice time than we do as fans.
a Scott/Leddy bromance?

New plan
Rather than going on the PP, someone, say #32, should take a penalty.
Glad to see the PK is once again back on the plus side of the ledger.
This sounds like something we used to kid about in the 09-10 season. Scott in the penalty box might actually help us score.
Thank you, sir! May I have another?
But then
shouldn’t we have a skill player in the box for the inevitable (if we plan for it) end-of-penalty breakaway?
he and Kaner
had a 2 on 1 last December, I think, and Kaner passed it to Scott to shoot, but no luck.
I remember that
Scott was interviewed afterwards, saying he knew all he had to do was just hold onto his stick for a tap-in and he knew Kaner was going to pass it b/c he was staring at him the entire way…then Kaner’s pass bounced. Scott was bemoaning that Kaner always throws these perfect saucer passes, and the one time it’s for him, and the pass bounces.
It was a hilarious interview, honestly.

Hey there
I know last time I was on here I was Q bashing but it is time for me to give the guy a few compliments.
The guy gets big credit for putting frolik on the pk. This penalty kill looks hugely improved and a big reason is frolik.
Frolik had a good game - especially the empty netter
Let’s call it “Pantsing the Weiner-Tucker”..
Take us to the Silver Chalice!
This Nugent-Hopkins kid should get 90+ points if he stays healthy. Then again, how likely is a team that’s so top-heavy continue success through the season?
That is pushing it.
I could see 60 points but 90 is too much. He is not strong enough on the puck to score 90.
Couldn't watch the game on Saturday,
“Darn you WGN, darn you to heck!” But I was happy when I saw that the Hawks won… Then I come on here, and it looks like a Nirvana concert just got over. WTF?
I could understand if the score was the same as Friday night, but sheesh, were you all expecting a football score?

Enjoy it
Just find a way to enjoy the goddamn game. Be critical when/where warranted, ask for more, expect more but still enjoy it. The offseason lasts seemingly forever. The playoffs are always too brief and by no means guaranteed. This is Chicago Blackhawks NHL hockey and it ended with a decided edge for the good guys. Smile like you mean it.
All this angry-when-they-lose, angrier-when-they-win stuff is exhausting.
Yup, second in the conference, fifth in the league, I'll take it...

If your name wasn't scott I would take you seriously.
Playoffs are great whether or not the hawks are in it.
But yes they are too brief, and yes the offseason lasts to long.
That said that game was not very good despite the win.
ha!
but I am entitled to turn up my nose at this crap- I have high standards and lofty expectations.

CHI (3) - NSH (5)
CHI (2) - DET (5)

We like our people!
I bet that 3 goal win over SJS
just pissed people off to no end. Scarier, the 2005 roster. Scarier than that – the 2005 goalie stats where no Hawks goalie broke .900 SV% or 3.00 GAA, even scarier the goalies on the top team in the central and the top team in the northwest were part of that 2005 goalie group.
It did in SJ and then they traded for Joe Thornton and then destroyed the league for the rest of the regular season.

It's called "Not resting on your Laurels",
The win against CBJ was not a pretty win, it was an ugly win. Even when you win, you need to be self critical on how to improve and stay one of the best and to become the best. Look at the Washington Capital and Vancoufire Cannots. The Caps were and still are not on overly critical team on their performance, they have huge seasons but flounder in the post-season because they do not strive to improve. The ’Nucks blammed everybody but them selves when they lost AND got big headed when they won.
Even when you win you still have to seek out what you can improve on, not just think you have it all figured out already. Example, look at the Green Bay Packers (disclosure I am a Packers fan AND this is not meant as a slight at any other NFL team just an example). The Pack is 7-0 best in the NFL, yet for every single play every player is graded pass-fail. Even if that player scores a TD or makes another big play, if they blew their assignment-route-coverage etc… they get a minus, because the play was broken and that player did NOT do what was expected. Though they have not lost, their goal is to get better and not just sit back on what they have done so far. This is a mark of a good team.
The Hawks won the game which is good, but they can do much better. Usually an ugly win is better than a pretty loss but that is ONLY if you do not walk away from that win thinking you are set and do not need to change anything.
McClure was simply doing this, pointing the win is good, but it was not pretty, MUCH can be improved on and an effort like against CBJ is not going to win against most teams. Be hapy about the win for sure, but that does not mean being oblivious or not pointing out what is broken, and for the Hawks, they do have broken aspects to their game, even though they are 6-2-2 and first in the Central.

New hawks strategy. Decline the penalty and opt to give the other team the man advantage. Put Kane Hoss, Keith Seabs out there. Bathe in awesomeness.

O.K. there McClure, I know you don’t like the guy for certain reasons (some obvious, some not) but Wisniewski did have a very good game and just added a pair of assists tonight in a Jackets win.
Look, we all know that he was overpaid in the summer but if you want to start bashing guys that are overpaid defencemen that are doing nothing all I ask is “is Brian Campbell still alive?” You know that guy that was defended all the time and was deemed an “offensive genius” despite having about the same point totals last year as Steve Montador and has been replaced by a 21-year old Leddy, who you constantly bash once again for no reason totally forgetting that his aggressive play rushing up the ice on the 4-on-4 and the chip-in that resulted in Vikberg getting in the clear and sniping the go-ahead goal. There was a reason Campbell never got time on the PP, and that’s the same reason I guess as to why Ben Smith isn’t up here. If Brian Campbell is QB your PP your team sucks!
And speaking of overpaid July 1st ,2011 recipients, how’s Ville Leino doing these days?

I'm with you on overpaidness not being an excuse to bash somebody
but I don’t get how you go ahead and do the same with Brian Campbell. I don’t think his point total or lack of 1st unit PP time really tells the story on what the guy brought to this team.
And seriously, so far it’s not that Leddy is replacing him. Soupy didn’t play with Keith terribly often, did he? In fact our inability to move the puck up the past two years is the reason why I haven’t jumped on CNS’s (or the BHUp staff’s?) defend-the-2-8 pairing-against-the-masses bandwagon just yet. I’m totally with McClure on needing puck movers on both your shutdown line and your more offensively-minded line. And Brian Campbell was one of the best at it.
It wasn’t meant to bash Campbell (who has 9 points in 10 games with the Panthers) but used as a comparison to illustrate that if you’re going to bash someone that’s overpaid that’s fine, but then don’t defend someone that was equally, and in this case, more overpaid and even less effective.
And you’re right to an extent, Brian Campbell was one of the best at it … it just happened very infrequently for the ’Hawks.

we were constantly in the league top 3 last year when Havi was running it. Then they switched Kitch to PP and Havi to PK. Hijinx ensued.
