Concentrate And Ask Again - Killion's Attempt At Predicting The Future
It's October now.. which means that baseball has come to a close for the year (baseball ends in September, right?) and that we're mere days away from the puck dropping at the United Center for the first time in months... and now we probably won't have that pesky basketball taking up half the TVs at the bars. If only we could get the circus to have a lockout too. Anyways... here are my answers to questions that no one asked me about...
Leading goal-scorer:
Patrick Sharp. I called him last year and I was correct so I'm not changing horses now. 38 and new career high for Shooter
Leading point-getter:
Patrick Kane - easy choice here. Kaner will have a standout year but still won't break 100 points. 94 (31 goals, 63 assists... that equals 94, right?)
+/- Leader:
Just to be different than Fels, Duncan Keith returns to form but not quite Norris levels. +28
Penalty Minute Leader:
No question, Carbomb
Power Play Rank:
Defying all eyeball tests known to man.. the Clown Shoes will continue but the Hawks will still end up with the 4th best overall PP%
Penalty Kill Rank:
A definite improvement - 10th overall
Corey Crawford's stats:
It's one thing to pick the number of goals or assists a player will accrue... that's pure science with formulas and everything. You can't argue with it. Picking a goalie's stats? That's crazy talk. I assume we're going to see an improved Crawford if only because of a team that gives a shit playing in front of him.. as for the actual numbers - lets go with 62 starts, 42-18-2 - .908 SV% and 2.24 GAA. I have no idea if those numbers make any sense. Someone please remember to remind me of this prediction at the end of the year... try not to laugh while doing so.
Breakout Player:
Is it possible for Patrick Kane to breakout? I'm really hoping for him to go off all year long. I was also hoping to put Ben Smith in this category but he might have come down with a strong case of Crosby-itis (formerly known as Lindros Syndrome).
Biggest Disappointment:
There's a good amount of potential here for disappointment. There's a lot of new blood on the team once again but thankfully I don't think we'll see anything like the let down we experienced last year. As far as individual players... much like Sam, I thought about putting Rostislav Olesz in here but realized that I too never really had any expectations to begin with for him. I guess it'll be a disappointment if I never learn to spell his name without looking it up but that's about it. I worry about Dave Bolland struggling with injuries (again) and ending up in this category through no real fault of his own but lets pray that never happens. Daniel Carcillo could be the energy player that was missing for so much of last year... he could also be a complete and utter disaster.
Oh, and I don't have very high hopes for Ray Emery either. I expect Salak to get more than his fair share of time with the Hawks.
Central Division:
- Blackhawks
- Scum
- Predators
- Jackets
- Blues
It's not going to be an easy year but the Hawks are going to return to the top of the Central Division this year. Unlike Sam, I'm not ready to write off the filth that dwells most of the year in Detroit. There's every reason to think that they'll have a rough go of it this year and Sam wrote them out well... but when has that ever stopped them? You could have made most of those arguments last year and they still were a remarkably solid team. Lidstrom is old but this is almost certain to be his last year and he's not going to go out quietly like Chelios. Lids is going to put everything he can into this year.. and even at his age it's still better than 97% of the league. I don't want to count on Dats or Zetterberg going down with injury either because it almost ensures they will play a full season. And of course, it's not only going to be Scum causing us to fret - the Predators are once again seemingly inexplicably going to push hard and I wouldn't be surprised if the top three spots are all up for grabs really late into the regular season. The games between these three squads are going to be intense this year.. I can't wait.
Do you really care about the Jackets or the Blues? I didn't think so...
Western Conference:
I'm going with Calgary in the final spot just for kicks. I like Iginla too much to wish a third year in a row without the post-season. I think they'll find a way to sneak in there. As much as I'd like to think the central can supply half the playoff teams for the West.. I don't think it'll happen. The top three are a sure thing but the Jackets are just barely going to miss out when the season ends. The Canucks are going to coast on an improved but hardly intimidating division (but they're going to fail again). The Kings are going to be scary but not scary enough to out duel the Sharks. I worry that the Sharks may have finally put together a winner... but I think I've worried about that for the last 3 years or so. The Ducks are the Predators in that they always seem to find a way to be good and annoying... plus Teemu Selanne is going out with a bang.
Finals:
I really hate making this pick. No matter how well I lay out my argument, if I pick the Hawks I'm just a homer. If I don't, I feel like I'm selling out. C'est la vie. So I'll just throw it out there..
Hawks over the Bruins in 6 and we're all drunk the whole summer long... again.

It’ll be a while before Doughty wins a Norris. Weber and Keith are much closer to the East Coast (I also think both of them are better than Doughty, and play on much better teams).

In 2010
I said I hoped Keith would win the Norris that year because I doubted he’d put up those numbers again.
But…
A. with Seabrook’s ever-developing offensive skills which should further increase their effectiveness when paired, and
B. if Keith skates half of his minutes with Leddy – and therefore against weaker competition…
I believe Keith has a really good chance of proving me wrong. Plus, he looked like a monster in the preseason, especially on the PP.
Keith is going to often be referred to as Duncan Fucking Keith quite a bit this season.

So what I learned today is
If a guy has a bad preseason we ignore it but if a guy has a good preseason we should bank on it.
Not aimed at you CNS and don’t take offense, I’m just being a dick because I had a cold Smashburger for dinner and I’m mostly kidding.
I agree Keith looks like he’s off to a great start and I think he’s got something to prove after his comments last Spring. As I’ve previously stated, I’m excited about this season.
Thank you, sir! May I have another?
Eh, you've been a dick for a while
so i don’t even notice much anymore.
The difference for me regarding Keith and Emery (and I believe a number of those defending Emery might feel the same):
This is like when many of us were called “Huet apologists.” We weren’t stating that Huet was better than Crawford, just that it didn’t matter (for a number of reasons). But then of course the Huaters did their victory dance not even realizing that they were arguing a different point.
Same here. I haven’t heard anyone state that Emery is better than Salak, just that it’s a make sense move – and 1.5 preseason games don’t mean much (small sample size). It doesn’t mean Emery is gonna do great, it just means it makes sense for a number of reasons.
So the comparison between Keith and Emery isn’t relevant for my viewpoint. Emery didn’t look good, but I never said he’d be great. Keith did, and I expect he’ll have an awesome season.
Lead writer (and of course, photoshopper) for BlackhawkUp. Follow me on Twitter.

I could actually give two shits about Emery's actual GAA and SV% in pre-season
It was watching to many shots a goalie should stop he did not, that concerns me. The Hawks defense works its best with a goalie that fits their mold (like any team). For the Hawks it has allot of high caliber guys, who can defend very well. They do not always try to stop the shot, but stop the high quality shot, and allow the goalie to make the easy save.
It is that aspect that has me concerned about Emery, he let in too many of those shots, and we saw last season with Turco (big puck handler), when a goalie does not fit in with how the defensemen play, the defenseman will change they way they play and all hell breaks lose.
Goalies are going to give up goals, and soft ones at times, but Emery gave up too many soft ones for my comfort and the way the Hawks D operates. I hope he succeeds, I understand the reasoning behind it, but I saw Salak fitting in much better with the Hawks style for the defensemen that Emery, simply because I do not think the Hawks D-men will have to adjust their play while he is in net. I hope I am dead wrong about this, though and Emery shines.

My Predictions (as if anyone cares :) )
Leading goal-scorer:
Patrick Sharp – 37
Leading point-getter:
Jonathon Toews 88
+/- Leader:
Jonathon Toews +22
Penalty Minute Leader:
No question, Carbomb
Power Play Rank:
8th I have no idea why, I just like the #.
Penalty Kill Rank:
Middle of the Pack (15th)
Corey Crawford’s stats:
40 W’s GAA In the 2.50’s 65 starts
Breakout Player:
Amusingly, I’m going to go with Viktor Stalberg, I think his game takes another step forward .
Biggest Disappointment:
Nick Leddy. I think people expect him to be a 2nd pairing dman, and if you expect that from him, you’re going to be mightily disappointed.
I'm going to buck the trend with Carbomb
and say that Jamal Mayers edges him in PIMs.
heh… I got cable today and am watching the Bruins game 3 thrashing of the ‘Nucks on Versus. B’s up 7-1 now after the Ryder goal.
I have been thinking this when everyone keeps putting carbomb.
yeah those minors for looking at someone wrong are annoying, but it’s the misconducts and fighting majors that get more PIMS. I see Mayers standing up for teammates a lot.

it's something talking alright..
but if they say it on NM it MUST be true.. damn!

Only way that happens
is a complete failure of the defensive system in front of Crawford, which would take an injury to Seabs or Keith for a lengthy period…
Please don't use the word "injury" in the same sentence with "Keith" or "Seabrook"
I’m worried enough about Bolland.
I'd say gutsy is a good way to put it ...
The Hawks only made the playoffs last year because another team lost on the last day of the season (thank goodness Dallas is, has always been, and will always be a team full of gutless wonders). I think the Hawk’s being a domimant team is probably just as likely as them missing the playoffs, which I’d put at 10% for each. My money is them being a streaky above average 4th or 5th in the conference team.
Putting the playoff predictions aside, the best thing the Hawks can do right now is make sure everybody knows they’re tough to play against: burn you on offense and bruise you on defense. I say this team lives and dies with Stalberg … if he plays smash-mouth hockey, scores garbage goals and slams his body, and everybody else plays their role this team will have a reputation. That’s why I make this proclomation: if Stalberg goes from the prettiest Hawk now to the ugliest by April, I will by an authentic, designer Stalberg Jersey!

For serious, he's my breakout player of the year ...
Stalberg is one of those players that you can’t wrap your mind around. He’s got size but not grit. Speed but no hands. My theory is that the only way a player as soft and weak-kneed as Pin Cushion (Stalberg) can exist on an NHL team is that they have next to nothing in the way of that hazy concept of “team toughness.” (see hawks last year). Fast forward to this summer, when Bowman brings in the grinders and keeps Softlberg around desipte wanting to get tougher. That’s because Bowman thinks Caricillo and co.’s play will rub off on him (in a good way). On board with idea, Q keeps Stal-Brady on the fourth line, hoping his rooster adapts to the cockfight instead of just getting pecked to death. If everything goes according to plan, Songbirg should be leaving hockey for extreme cage fighting in 5 years (this part is a joke, by the way).

so, right now Q has this list
and is stroking his ‘tache and thinking "Bolland, Mayers, Hossa with Scott and Hjammer…that’ll work against the Bruins top line"…
enough of the niceties: time for the eye-gouging..
Shot at Line Generator
1st: Sharp / Toews / Saad
2nd: Brunette / Kane / Hossa
3rd: Bickell / Bolland / Frolik
4th: Mayers / Smith / Olesz
1st P: Keith / Montador
2nd P: Jelly / Seabrook
3rd P:: O Donnell / Leddy
errr..
don’t see it meself, though Saad on the top line would be interesting.. sadly (or Saadly) he’d likely get killed.
enough of the niceties: time for the eye-gouging..

not that I think the lad isn’t great but we all know what will be sent out against Toews’ line.. is he ready for people trying to get on the Shanahammer Hall Of Fame against him? He’s about 12 years old, right?
enough of the niceties: time for the eye-gouging..
I thought in the preseason him and Toews had a rapport
Also, he’s a big body although doesn’t know quite how to use it yet. An adequate passer, plays decent in traffic.
Nope that was the practice lines
and what they have “stated” would be the starting line
The d pairings dont work, because you know that whole Leddy and keith will be on the same pair and I think Lepisto and Montador will be your 3rd pair

That pair was painful
Keith is handicapped if we do that… on the PP might switch to that but in Even Strength … Do not want.
it's the one line...
where I think the attention the other guys get keeps him alive and well. Hopefully he can be really effective so that other teams can’t put all their efforts in stopping Patrick Toews.
And wow. Beach who?

Considering how thread bare the hawks are down the middle, even with everyone healthy
I unfortunately think that the Hawks’ philosophy on their centerman this season is going to be
Q: “Is he concussed”
A: “Well…”
Q: “Maybe is almost as good as no, moving on… can he stand up”
A: “Yes”
Q: “Can he move his extremities?”
A: “Yes.”
Q: “Does he have at least some sensation in his lower back?”
A “Yes.”
Q: “Good, tape him up, get him in his pads, and clear him to play.”

Although the Cannots play in a shit-show of a division
I can’t help but think that virtually being without a second line for the first month of the season (neither Kesler nor Raymond due back before November) puts a wrench in their campaign to defend their presidents trophy banner. I see a lot of road apples for a stacked Sharks team getting to thump Pheonix and Dallas 12 times over the course of the year.

I have Gamecenter Live
in Central America. It’s great as long as you have the bandwidth.
You think last year's riot was bad, wait and see what happens if my kid doesn't get fed on time.
from the free trial last year,
I believe it was a sliding scale depending on your bandwidth. I have heard there is a free night or whatever opening weekend for DTV, and that usually translates into free trial. Might want to give it a go before you put down the cash. The $$$ is the reason I don’t have it and settle for usually crappy, but sometimes decent free streams.
I have a FEVER and the only prescription is MOAR DAGGER!
The Enemy's Gate is Down
Justin.TV usually works well
until it went down a few times.
Blair Betts
Wish Stan would have seen that comin. That guy can fuckin kill penalties. Would have looked good down on the 4th line. In fact, he’d look great in John Scott’s roster spot
"Sure, I've been called a xenophobe, but the truth is, I'm not. I honestly just feel that America is the best country and the other countries aren't as good. That used to be called patriotism."

Rust eze? Or perhaps Lightning McQueen?
