Return Of The... - Stars 2, Hawks 1
It's all over. Cancel the rest of the season. There's no point.
While the Hawks certainly weren't lacking energy tonight, they were certainly not in lock step with one another. With Dave Bolland missing the opener with some mystery injury, and Ben Smith out with a skull full of tapioca, the Hawks were forced to dress 7 D and trot out a makeshift bottom 6, and it showed. There were plenty of chances going both ways in the first, as the Hawks and Stars traded chances, mostly as a result from sloppy ass play from both sides, and the netminders at both ends were up to the task.
After getting outshot in the first, the Hawks began to pour it on in the second, but seemingly every shot was either fired wide or right at Kari Lehtonen. The Stars opened the scoring after a blind ring around the boards from Duncan Keith found dick nose Mike Ribeiro, who slid the puck to an uncovered Alex Goligoski who solved Corey Crawford on a shot that likely moved late on Crow. The Hawks were given three straight power plays in the frame, but near the end of the third, Marian Hossa took an offensive zone slash, with a resultant defensive zone draw that OF COURSE ended up in the back of the net.
The Stars pretty well clamped things down through the third, and the Hawks finally only solved Lehtonen with 13 seconds left and an extra attacker when Nick Leddy's shot from the top of the ring went shelf. Stars 2, Hawks 1, panic commence.
Observations
- So can we all just agree that there's zero point to ever speculating what the fuck the line combinations are going to be? What a pig fuck.
- Old Man Pucks, Sean O'Donnell, nearly got blown by 10 seconds into the game. Not a good harbinger for his endurance. And Steve "Money Well Spent" Montador hardly looked like as much of a liability as his 12 shifts would indicate. But look for Dusty Quenneville to keep OD in until he absolutely can't anymore.
- Ahh yes, the minimum one breakaway against while Keith and Leddy are out there. I'll say it every game until it works: STOP THAT.
- And while we're talking about Keith, that was a downright unforgivable turnover that led to the first goal. A 100% blind fire up the boards. No, Hossa can't leave the zone that early, but he had time an 7/8ths of the width of the ice to carry the puck with.
- Jamie Benn: officially a thing.
- Looks like we're definitely getting Fuck You Mode Kaner this year.
- Though the Hawks did take a lot of bad angle shots into Lehtonen's pads, he did stand tall when he had to in the 2nd when it was still a one goal game.
- Can hardly fault Crow for the loss, but both of those goals were preventable. Maybe the Goligoski shot dipped, and Hammer should have had better position on Benn, or Crawford should have caught the Souray shot clean, but if he only lets in 2 on 33 shots against the Stars, that's a game you've still got to win.
- The power play is still fucking clown shoes.
- Yeah, it was frustrating, it was ugly, and it wasn't the fun result, but it was game 1, and there's an immediate opportunity for retribution tomorrow. And maybe Dave Bolland even graces the Hawks with his presence. There's room for optimism. Until they lose tomorrow night. Then the sky is REALLY falling.

great recap
I thought the Hawks looked good, I liked the energy. Started off a little sloppy on both ends. I’m not sure why Monty is behind OD for the D lines, am I missing something? Crow didn’t seem rusty. Rusty was tomokop 1.5 to me as well. Tomorrows another day, let’s get em then. Go Hawks!

I return to my stance about power plays
They aren’t meant to succeed at a clip of 100%.
If that were the case, they would just award goals immediately and not do anything else.
If it’s unfair to judge Monty on his 12 shifts, it’s unfair to judge the PP on its what, 2 shifts?
But they are meant to succeed at a higher clip than 0%

good recap
the ice looked jumpy out there, but regardless, the blind little backhand passes need to stop as well…with how much Q juggles the line you have no idea who’s out there with you, and if they’re even in position…we had more rushes fall apart due to players trying to be too cute…
when did you run into will smith!?
Unless I was imagining things
wasn’t Montador trying to play wing for a few shifts? Hard to blame him for not looking great there.
Rust eze did try to have some net presence, so there’s that at least.

on Saad
I honestly didnt expect to really notice Saad last night but he had a couple of good shifts where he was always around the puck in the zone and I didnt really notice him on the other end which is usually a good indication. Im sure its going to take him a little time to adjust to playing against full rosters of NHL caliber talent unlike the preseason teams where over half the team was AHL level and under.

game 1….and ever since Kaner came into the league the Hawks haven’t won a season opener…they either L or OTL…..but I did not like the look of things last night….Steve Montador actually played a solid game, even though he only played 9-10 min…I wonder if we are ever gonna see D2k back to 2008-2009 2009-2010 form…..i’m so depressed

We play Buffalo home and home early last year (remember the Hjammer suspension?)
I’m pretty sure we burned Monty pretty good in those games, and he turned his season around after a shaky start. Maybe it’s a pattern?
Take us to the Silver Chalice!
Yes, only game 1.
But there were a number of disturbing similarities to most of last season. The big guns need to consistently take advantage of opportunities and quit making every goalie they face look like the next Vezina winner. And Keith…
On the positive side, they played with a lot of energy and Kaner looked like a man out there. If/when we get a full complement of starters I’m sure things will look better. However (going negative again) our so-called depth was on display last night and when we lose some starters to injury the backups better gel/jell with the team better than they appeared to last night.
Crow did not appear to be in the start of a sophomore slump so that’s another very good thing.
Thank you, sir! May I have another?
I’d also like to add that it appeared that Bickell was the only forward willing to engage physically, and that was the main reason as to why the ’Hawks lost countless board battles and had very little puck possession – not the ice.
And if Q still intends to have a player in front of the goal during the PP then Bickell might be a better fit there than Frolik.

Frolik in front of the net...
Man, that guy earned a few free passes from me last night.
After he lost his brain bucket, he was in front of the net for 2 or 3 slappers from the point. Sure, old timers did that all the time, but I have to imagine that after playing your entire life with a helmet like Frolik, you’d feel dangerously exposed in that situation.
After the Stars cleared the zone, Frolik had the opportunity to wave for a change – but he didn’t. Hawks re-entered the zone and there was Frolik, sans helmet, right back in front of the net.
Toughness, he has it.

Great recap by McClure as usual and he pulls no punches.
Anyhow..wonderful energy in Period 2 but Lehtonen looked like a Vezina trophy winner in that period. Fro must get over last season’s jinx and hit that open net and we might have had a different game.
This looks like last season … our guys can’t finish the play with a goal and any relaxation and slop in our own end results in a puck in the back of the net.

I dont know about you guys but
I absolutely loved what I saw from Leddy last night! He played the type of game that an offensive minded D-man should be playing. Taking shots from the point, and not being a liability in his own end, he was blocking shots and I was pretty impressed with the play he made at the start of the game on the Stars first slight breakaway! Overall an excellent night for the kid and I hope to see more improvement from him as the season progresses!

As much of a Keith-Leddy pairing apologist I am
and as much as I stated over the summer that we’d see that pairing for half the games – and it would work, I wasn’t impressed by them last night (although Leddy looked fine most of the time).
But it was only 1 game with a fucked up roster and no Bolland – who makes the whole thing work. Without Bolland, I would prefer to see Keith-Seabrook back together and Leddy-Lepisto paired on the 3rd line. (Monty-Hjammer on the 2nd line)
The match-ups were crazy last night and that pairing’s success is more dependent on match-ups than any other.

Yeah but
Toews and Kane “split” playing against the Stars first line. Toews then played against the Third and Kane against the second line. Anyone thinking Q could “hide” Kane against the other teams checking lines needs to watch last nights matchups.
The Hawks didn’t play a traditional checking line. Although Pirri played some against the Stars second and third lines, he spent a good portion of his shifts against the Stars fourth line.
So I don’t know about your d-pairs CNS. With those, Leddy is playing with the non scoring forward lines. And you have Monty and Hjammer with Kane and Hossa. Personally, I think the Kane at center thing might be short lived but…
I wouldnt mind
seeing these D pairings to see how they work.
Keith and Seabs <— Solid D with good offensive upside
Montador and Leddy <—- Montador with the solid D and that gives Leddy a tad more freedom to play his game like Soupy
Hjammer and Lepisto <— shut down D pairing
I just feel that Keith and Leddy’s offensive strengths end up offsetting one another with them paired up like that.
What do you guys think?
Drink it up!

Re; Keith
I was willing to give him a mulligan for last season but, last night, it seems like he was taking up right where he left off. That giveaway was completely unforgivable and, in a tight game, cannot happen with teh guy who’s supposed to be our best D-man.
I know it’s way too early too panic but if last year turns out to be the new normal, the Hawks are going to have big problems.
My main question though is, how does a guy who should be in the prime of his career suddenly fall off the tracks? It’s not like he’s had any significant injuries.
Or is it my fault for putting the whammy on him when I selected #2 for last season’s annual jersey purchase?
If you take away Keith’s few mistakes, I thought he was solid. I’m not worried about him at all at this point.
The problem is...
his one glaring mistake was SO preventable.
As soon as the puck left his stick on his blind ring-around I said “SHIT…” That simply cannot happen from your #1 D.
by ToewsFatherInLaw on Oct 8, 2011 12:05 PM CDT up reply actions
I'm not sure how anyone watching that play blame can blame Keith
He was boxed by two forwards. Odds are that the other Dallas forward therefore isn’t going to be along the boards and Keith’s own forwards will have the inside position on the defenders.
Hossa vacated his position early, maybe expecting that Keith was going to make the pass prior to spinning away from Dvorak (which left him boxed in behind the goal).
Shit happens. Sometimes a defender doesn’t have the time to order a latte and survey the ice to decide what the best option is.

Return of the raggin on Keith.
Seriously you want to blame that game on Leddy playing with Keith?
Hawks have no clue what to do when Bolland is injured. And it is NOT like there weren’t any hints given last year of the Problem. Hawks had all kinds of choices to bring in a 4th line center that can fillin on the third when Bolland is hurt.
And seriously I think very highly of Q and don’t think the Hawks would have won their cup without him. However, needing a fighter on your team in 2012? Seriously?
Hawks played that game with Patrick Kane as a center against the other teams number one and two lines. Seriously? You lose Bolland and Patrick Kane is your second best defensive center?
If the Hawks are NOT going to use Kruger then let Pirri be the stop gap second line center between Hossa and Sharp. At least until the Hawks can add another center. And unfortunately they need two.
I agree, I think last night was a loss because of our Center situation.
I love the Idea of Kane at C, but don’t know if its as practical as a natural 2nd L C.
It shows we need a 4th L C that can step up to 3rd L when Bolland is out. (Bolland will always be out, the man is a walking wound.)
When I decide to change my personality I will let you know what I become.
by Blackhawks Transplant on Oct 8, 2011 9:56 AM CDT up reply actions
If that's true...
and we fold up like a house of cards whenever Bolland, inevitably, misses time with injuries, then we have bigger problems than I thought.
Exactly
Where’s the depth? We know Bolly is going to miss his 20 games and we can’t fall apart when he does.
Thank you, sir! May I have another?
Here's another idea
Sharpie playing center?
I’d almost go so far as to say he could even fill in as “3rd line” center, especially if we want to get him interested in covering his own zone (which I’ve never knocked him for, but some have). It’s not like we’re really going with a traditional 1st/2nd/3rd line scheme anyway, and he may be a better option facing tougher competition than some of our other C’s.
Sharp at third line center just seems like...
…an incredibly bad idea to me. At the same time, whetever we were doing last night sure wasn’t working so something is going to have to be done.
As much as I love Bolland, it’s becoming pretty clear to anybody who’s been paying attention the last few years (obviously not our GM) that the guy is too much of a china doll to really be depended on.
by bluekoolaide on Oct 8, 2011 10:19 AM CDT up reply actions
I think Q gets a "F" for last night
- Leaving Montador rusting on the bench
- Line panic
- Messing with a PP that did not look bad in the preseason with 2-7 on the points; Sharp comes back and he immediately goes back to what DIDN’T work last year.
The Blackhawks had the fourth best PP% in the NHL last year
And Sharp was tied for 6th in the league with 12 PP goals.
Sharp
is really only on the point for faceoffs. Once the Hawks possess the puck he essentially plays the right half boards and sneaks down low backdoor. I’d rather have him in the high slot but he really isn’t at the blue line in the traditional sense.
I haven't been paying enough attention maybe
Who covers the point when Sharpie vacates it?
Also, I noticed Hossa was taking some one-timers from the top of the circles on the PP. Don’t remember him doing that before.
The line panic is what bugged me the most.

Come on guys
Hawks rolled 4 lines at the end of the game after going most of the game double shifting their stars. Sometimes you have to give your top players a breather, especially at the end of the game. Hawks makeshift 4th line had two short shifts and only really one normal shift the entire night. All at the end of the game.
Sometimes you have to give your top players a breather

Loading up lines
Hawks were loading up their lines at the end trying to score. If there are stoppages in play, the fourth line probably doesn’t have to play at all. So I have NO problems with how Q managed the end game shifts.
Now keeping Scott and putting them in a 1 forward short situation to begin with, well, that is all on him.
"C’mon Q. Patience."
This does not compute.

"immediately goes back to what DIDN’T work last year"
4th in the league = didn’t work?
But I’m with you on Sharp at the point last night. As much as I was OK with Sharp at point last season, 2-7 looked great during the pre-season. And Q throws Sharp out there on his first game back.
IMO, during the first couple weeks of the season where there is still a lot of chemistry to be built, you HAVE to start with the things/players that did have chemistry during the pre-season.
And the line juggling was probably inevitable since they started the game double-shifting due to the roster.

Quick/early recap
I assume a precedent set that is not.
If we get 81 more games of that Bickell I will be a very happy camper. He was everything we’ve ever asked out of him last night. I’m getting very optimistic about that 3rd line.
Brunette has a good 3rd period, thank god. After the first two periods I was ready to decide that I hated him. Hopefully he just got off to a slow start with first game jitters.
Our depth on D doesn’t seem like much of a strength (admittedly small sample size). O’Donnell got beat bad right off the bat, Lepisto shot one on his own goalie and our big free agent signing was playing wing because he couldn’t crack the top 6 after a lackluster preseason. This won’t be a big issue if our top 4 can get it together so let’s hope for that.
Tonight: our first shoot the puck girl of the regular season. Let’s start the season off right.
O'Donnell has looked John Scott slow
Maybe, just once, someone will call me 'Sir' without adding, 'You're making a scene."
Twice is a trend........
It’s only one game, but it looks like Dunc is in 2010-2011 midseason form already.
Coaching Coaching Coaching
The crappy defensive zone coverage is supposed to be solved in the preseason—-by coaching.
The “we only have two powerplay options” a shot from the point and a jam shot from the goal line, is coaching.
OK the lineup was screwed with absences BUT welcome to the NHL…adapt your coaching or lose.
I am beginning to think Q won the Cup despite his coaching. I know it is early BUT this does not look good.
I think the two people I miss the most from 2010-11 are Torch, and Ladd.

For the love of Jah guys, Keith was beneath the goal line with the puck and a Dallas man on him on either side. He threw the puck exactly where a D-Man is supposed to throw it in that situation, and Hossa WAS NOWHERE TO BE FOUND. He had vacated the zone.
I understand a lot of you like banging on Keith. It comes naturally, and sometime he deserves it. But maybe knowing just a whiff of something about positioning would bolster your credibility when it comes to finding culprits or whipping boys.
If you are outraged about the first goal, YOU ARE MAD AT HOSSA, NOT KEITH.
It looks like they've exorcized their dragons.
Awesome, I would love to hear your opinion on the Emery/Cooke goal from preseason.

Tough to have opinions on the preseason
I’m not sure what that means . . . sarcasm?
Didn’t see it . . .
If you have a link, I’d be happy to watch it and opine.
It looks like they've exorcized their dragons.
No man, just have a similar opinion is all.
Im seriously concerned that this is what our D men will look like this season though. I agree with you on Keith not being at fault in this particular case. Just wondering if you feel thats All on Emery, or D looked slow….

Hah!
Heh . . . I hadn’t seen that. What fun.
Uh, just a textbook bank pass there from Emery to Cook. I’d fault the goalie on that for putting the puck on Cooke’s tape.
Crazy knuckling shot. Both Emery and Seabrook did their best, but they could not . . .
That one is on Emery, IMHO.
It looks like they've exorcized their dragons.
Unfortunatly not being in the moment doesnt do it justice.
They looked slow to get there before that play happened. I feel it was Emery’s fault, but I think the D just didn’t know what the hell was going on.

I'm mad at Hossa
for that Dumbass penalty he took during the Power Play. The Hawks had to send Pirri out to take the defensive draw (which he lost) and it resulted in the 2nd goal.
Maybe, just once, someone will call me 'Sir' without adding, 'You're making a scene."
Hoss
That, too. Great player. Dominant at times in the first. But what a dumb penalty and why, exactly, was he flying the zone with Keith beside the goal and underneath the goal line with the puck and a Dallas forechecker on either side of him??
Doesn’t quite add up, does it?
It looks like they've exorcized their dragons.
Can you begin to question what is in that mans mind? One of his best friends just died...
He’s playing for 2 players now.

Agree 100%
I thought the most egregious error on that play was Hossa’s.

First time posting here...
Been following the board since the 08/09 season, decided I would finally jump into the fray after three seasons of just watching from the bushes.
I really hope Bolland gets back in the lineup at full strength soon; I also share the sentiment that last night’s loss was caused by our lack of center depth. After Q went insane with the lines in the third it seemed like we only had Toews and Pirri playing center, and you simply will not win a lot of games when that is the case. The lines will probably always be fluid with Q at the reins, but (I hope) we can roll four lines that don’t change every period with him centering Frolik and Bickell. Hopefully he comes back tonight.
As for Keith, I feel that he will right the ship (heard that one before…) soon. I just wish that Q would put Marlboro 72 back together, I feel that splitting them up does more harm than good. I wouldn’t be opposed to seeing how Montador and Hammer work together, although I see how that can lead to a weird Leddy/Lepisto/Odonell situation for the third pairing that I don’t see working out.
At least Crawford looked great…
And finally, I am no less excited to go to the home opener tonight. I am hoping that they come back strong, and that we see just how good this team can really be.
welcome to the fray!
Turco was good, but Crawford has a force field...

Thanks guys (and gal)
The bushes were the only place I felt safe, I was afraid I would hurt out here.
Almost time to head into the city, I wish it was 7:30 already haha. I’m hoping for a good bounce-back performance tonight!
If people really want to point a finger at someone for last night's loss . . .
. . . look no further than your head coach – the Q Stache guy who went apeshit with his lines one period into the OPENING GAME OF THE SEASON.
This, to me, seemed to say: “I am in control. Do not question or attempt to understand. Just know that I am in control.”
It looks like they've exorcized their dragons.
He had 12 forward positions to fill
with 11 forwards to play. Not all of that can be blamed on trademark Q line shuffling.
Cant he call up Hayes or another black ace?

by Blackhawks Transplant on Oct 8, 2011 11:08 AM CDT up reply actions
Not without putting Bolland on IR
Carcillo is still suspended and you are at 23 with Scott. So Bolland needs to be on IR or you live with 11 forwards. Carcillo is off suspension after this next game so I think they are going to live with 11.

Did anyone notice Patrick Sharp last night?
I didn’t. I’ll get to Keith in a second, but I was surprised how few times I noticed the puck being fired from or on the end of Patrick Sharp’s stick. I don’t think I saw him lose a draw at least, so there’s that.
Everything about Keith’s turnover has been covered ad nauseum so I’ll just add one more thing about Duncs… Those 100 foot passes from your own end through the neutral zone… KNOCK IT OFF. Liked what I saw from his defensive partner like most people have already commented.
How often were Kane and Hossa double shifting last night? I swear I seemed to see one of them out there every other shift.
by JesusMarianHossa on Oct 8, 2011 11:14 AM CDT reply actions
The Hawks played that game...
…like they had two top lines and Prri was their 4th line. Then Pirri jumped up occasionally to play a third line matchup. Crazy matchup game.
Away games,
they need more practice together. I Perhaps Q is still working out kinks. Yeah we want to start off good, and we should at home. Lets give it some time, I am starting to think its D Chemistry and thats it.

Kaner Fuck You Mode
Pissed off. He haz it. That move through the zone where he beat what looked like 3 guys by himself was very impressive. Even managed to get a shot on net. Patrick Kane was very fun to watch last night. Only one game and I’m sober now, so I won’t jump to any conclusions. I will say I didn’t like how Kane fit with Brunette. Man that guy is slow.
I think I still woke up this morning and said, “FUCK!” because Frolik missed an open net by going too high. He was really good otherwise.

Unless you take it to the next level and say that it falls off after he whiffs, loses his helmet and during his un-caused tumble to the ice.

question:
When you say
mostly as a result from sloppy ass play from both sides
was that meant to be read as “Sloppy ass-play” or “Sloppy-ass play” ? … ’cus, ya know, either one is plausible :-)

While not thrilled with the overall outcome
I thought the hawks looked OK last night overall. Energy was good. If anything, they suffered from overplaying everything rather than underplaying everything so the intangible “flow” suffered. Kane/Hossa looks to be a good combo once they get in the groove.
Negatives: Cap’n needs to have a beasting October, and he was nearly unnoticable along with the rest for the first line in general. I wish Brunette was about 3 years younger though; feels like he is stuggling to keep up so far.
It was my first time at the Bottom Lounge, so it was fun meeting 1/2 the ToS and a pretty large contingent of the Grrrlz posse :) Not to mention Hjammertime and BillyCh. Hope to see you all again!

They just beat the ever loving shit out of us every game
And I’m really getting sick of it. I’m not a meathead fan by really any measurement, but I was really expecting a more physical game out of the Hawks last night. Really thought Mayers would try to drop the gloves with someone in the 3rd period.

Is Mayers even allowed to “start stuff” when Hossa is being double shifted on his line? Let alone Kane? Sounds like you aren’t going to see that stuff until at least Carbomb shows up…

question becomes who is going to give it to him
Nashville? considering they will have to shell out for Suter and Weber next year, one of the 3 is moving on. between the 3 of them they could probably get to the cap floor.

In my opinion
Weber is actually the more important of the 2. It’s amazing what a defensive system (read TRAP) and good defensemen can do for a Goalie.

I was looking around to see if the hogs had played yet (first game is tonight)
and found the package for the AHL. I thought GameCenter Live was overpriced. AHL Live is $349.99 for their early bird special; normally $399.99. For just one team home and away games it’s $149.99 down from $199.99. WOW. Do people actually buy that? For minor league hockey?

closest I have is a WHA team in Escondido. That’s a lot of money to spill for minor league hockey.
